PROFUMO, the new intensity
A flybridge of exceptional size, the new flagship model of the fiberglass fleet, and a wonderful open, are getting ready to write another glorious chapter of the unique Riva history.
thE rIva 110’ and Riva 56’ projects were officially presented during the 2017 edition of Boot Düsseldorf, the major Winter boat show in Europe.
Great interest and enthusiasm have been registered amongst operators, ship owners and boat lovers for these two masterpieces that combine the Riva style with an unprecedented mix of innovation, design and comfort.
Created in collaboration with Officina Italia Design, the studio founded by Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta, the Strategic Product Committee and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department, the Riva 110’ and Riva 56’ are two anticipated models that will enrich a fleet which already includes world class yachting icons.
Riva 110’ promises to be a flybridge of boundless beauty and unprecedented elegance. The design of the hull has been fully refreshed and is now almost 109.1 feet (34 metres) in length, and a width of over 22 feet (7 metres).
Distinguished by her sporty profile and a design characterised by moulded glass and chrome inserts, Riva 110’ is going to be the new flagship of the fibreglass fleet. Expected launch: Autumn 2017.
Riva 56’ is already in build at the Sarnico yard. The yacht has a completely new hull form, and a sleek look which inherits and expands the stylistic traits that characterised the latest generation of opens and coupés by Riva.
Riva 56’ is a stylish combination of the most prestigious materials and attention to detail that has always been the hallmark of the Riva world; from the high gloss mahogany of the interiors to the natural teak of the exteriors, the lacquered finishes and stainless steel, mirrors, glass and leather. Expected launch: late Spring.
Stay tuned for these stunning water vessels – we’ll have a closer look coming up over the next few issues!

Major waterfront projects in Dubai turning the UAE into the next global leisure marine destination can drive super yacht and boat sales in the Middle East, organisers of the region’s leading marine industry event have said.
Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), organisers of the Dubai International Boat Show, are confident that the 25th edition of the event has helped stimulate further growth within a thriving regional boating community. The event takes place at Dubai International Marine Club, which is set to be an integral part of Dubai Harbour, the spectacular new waterfront development which will reinforce the Emirate’s status as a global marine industry destination and a regional hub for yachting, boating and water sports.
The 20 million-sqft Dubai Harbour project features a 135-metre-high tower, Dubai Lighthouse, housing a luxury hotel and an observation deck. It will also have a 150,000sqft cruise liner terminal capable of handling 6,000 passengers, as well as entertainment and retail space, a yacht club, shopping mall, hotels and residences.
Integrating the current DIMC, Skydive Dubai and Logo Island sites into a single community through a new road network and monorail, it will be developed in phases and take four years to complete once work starts.
In honor of its historic links to the sea, Panerai, the Florentine haute horlogerie sports watch brand proudly announced its participation at the 25th Dubai International Boat Show 2017 as the Supporting Partner for the eighth consecutive year. Panerai will be sponsoring the VIP registration lounge designed in a maritime like atmosphere inspired by the Panerai classic yacht challenge, the international route of regattas reserved for classic and vintage sailing boats. The Dubai Boat Show, taking place from February 28 until March 4, is the ideal regional platform for Panerai to display its latest novelties launched at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in Geneva. Embrace yourself for an innovative range of timepieces with new high-tech solutions and materials that are nothing less than spectacular!
The world’s superyacht manufacturers are sailing towards a major disruption of their traditional business model, with the CEO of Emirates-based shipyard Gulf Craft predicting the rise of an Uber-like pattern of shared ownership and complex charters among the world’s ultra-wealthy millennials. Erwin Bamps believes the next generation of UHNWIs (ultra high net worth individuals) will increasingly prioritise experience over possession. They will still want the use of superyachts, but will be far less interested in owning the asset. In fact, they will see ownership as a restriction.
Another thrilling chapter for Riva opens in the maxi yacht sector in the pursuit of style, sophistication and raw performance with the new fiberglass flagship, Riva 110’.
ne of the most renowned shipyards in the world officially presents the Riva 110’, the flagship of the fibreglass fleet, succeeding the Riva 100’ Corsaro as the next-generation model in the restyled flybridge range.
A collaboration between Officina Italiana Design, the studio founded by Mauro Micheli in collaboration with Sergio Beretta, the Strategic Product Committee and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department, the Riva 110’ promises to be a flybridge of boundless beauty and unprecedented elegance. The design of the hull has been fully refreshed and is now almost 109.1 feet (34 metres) in length, and a width of over 22 feet (seven metres).
The Riva 110’ sports twin MTU 16V series 2000 M94 engines, each outputting 2638 mhp. With this engine setup, the yacht will reach a cruising speed of 23 knots and a maximum speed of 26 knots (preliminary data). The maxi yacht also benefits from zero speed and underway fins, to which a gyroscopic stabiliser may be fitted to maximise comfort, even when anchored.
The exterior design builds on the untamed lines of the 100’ Corsaro: distinguished by her sporty profile, the hull of the Riva 110’ boasts an impressive glass wall and integrated portholes. On deck, a stretched glass roof extends over the length of the entire living area, constructed with panes nestled in a stainless steel frame. A second window surrounds the wide body master suite as far as the nose of the bow, complementing the sleek design.

The Riva 110’ promises to be a flybridge of boundless beauty and unprecedented elegance.
The master suite has a double bed, bathroom and walk-in wardrobe... pure luxury!
In addition, the raised bridge enjoys expansive front and side windshields. Two lateral fibreglass structures, finished with glass, reinforce the flybridge in the stern, further accentuating the aerodynamic profile. A streamlined hardtop with an innovative asymmetrical design, moulded glass and chrome inserts, completes the yacht and exemplifies the obsessive attention to the finest details.
The stern garage door opens and tilts down creating a generous beach club area at water level. The platform may also be submerged to offer maximum enjoyment from the stern area. Once beneath the water, a lift opens the garage for practical and straightforward launches; choose to store a Williams 505 or a jet-ski with independent launches, or enjoy staggered launches for larger tenders such as the Williams 565 and a jet-ski.
The cockpit on the main deck features a C-shaped sofa, table and chairs and leads into the main salon. An extensive open-plan space enhances the convivial atmosphere and includes both a living and formal dining area. The deck features yet another elegant innovation: a polished stainless steel frame supporting the superstructure and glass from top to bottom. This allows natural light to flood the threedimensional space, creating a luxury loft open to the ocean on all sides.
As on the larger yachts, the central zone serves to regulate the flow of crew and guests by keeping their circulation routes separate.
The master suite has a double bed, bathroom and walk-in wardrobe facing the stern to enhance separation from the service areas, particularly the galley. The suite is finished on the right with an armchair and coffee table, and on the left with a spacious walk-in wardrobe and a desk with panoramic sea views.

Guest accommodation is comprised of four VIP cabins with vanity tables and en-suite bathrooms. The starboard VIP cabin forward has twin beds and may accommodate, on request, an additional Pullman bed.
The crew area in the bow consists of a captain’s cabin with en-suite bathroom, and two additional single crew cabins each equipped with bunk beds and private bathrooms. Crew amenities also include a dinette complete with laundry facilities and a fully-equipped galley.
The sundeck of the Riva 110’ is striking in its sporty and innovative design. In the stern, the furnished open air sundeck is enclosed by a mahogany handrail finished with stainless steel and polished carbon fibre. There is also a cocktail bar with two stools and an informal dining area with C-shaped sofa, all naturally illuminated thanks to a glass skylight in the hardtop roof. The helm station is situated on the right side, with co-pilot seats on the left.
The flybridge is not only accessible from deck through a sliding glass and steel hatch, but it also linked to the foredeck through a side door on the left. This permits easy access to the facilities and offers practical crew access to on-board services.
The space is dominated by a C-shaped sofa opposite a centrepiece sunpad, all designed to promote sociability. On request, it is possible to substitute the sunpad with a garage. Alternatively, the owner may opt for a Jacuzzi with sliding integrated sun-pad covers. On this model, the area is equipped with a practical stowage compartment.
With so much flexibility offered through beautiful yet practical design, when the Riva 110’ makes its debut in Fall 2017, the yacht world better be prepared for this magnificent vessel to take over.

Having made its debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival, the Pershing 5X will now be presented to the general public at the most important autumn yacht shows, starting with the 57th Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.
he Pershing 5X is the result of a collaboration between Ferretti Group’s Engineering Department, Product Strategy Committee, and Fulvio De Simoni Design Studio, founded by the architect of the eponymous studio. The coupé represents a new, astonishing chapter in the 30-year history of Pershing.
With a length of 54.2’ (16.51 meters) and a maximum beam of 14.4’ (4.38 meters), the Pershing 5X is a yacht with super sporty lines. The aerodynamic design of the superstructure is further enhanced by distinct stylistic features, like the side wings protecting the cockpit, that have become a signature element of the brand. Four windows on each side of the hull, each with elliptical portholes, complete the design of this “fighter jet” on the water.
The transom can be moved by means of an electro-hydraulic system that allows it into the water at various heights, up to approximately 60cm, simplifying the launching and hauling of the tender.
The garage can be accessed from the beach area when the door is open, while the cockpit can be reached via a few steps starboard of the garage door, or through a concealable gangway.
The cockpit is fitted with a large sundeck, headrest and a second sofa. The area can be separated or joined to the salon thanks to a special opening and closing system for the glass door and glazed surface that divides these two areas.
With a length of 54.2’ (16.51 meters) and a maximum beam of 14.4’ (4.38 meters), the Pershing 5X is a yacht with super sporty lines.
A blend of essential design elements, lacquered frames and fabrics in soft grey shades, are interspersed with darker and contrasting details...
The glazed surface above the cockpit can be electrically lifted, while the two sections of the glass door can be opened or closed separately: the upper one can be manually tilted toward the outdoor ceiling panel; the lower one opens into the interiors, creating a partition between the salon and the cockpit and ensuring maximum safety when children are on board. This solution also allows for the deck to be transformed into an open area from bow to stern, or to separate the interior from the outside depending on the weather conditions.
The Pershing 5X is available in two engine configurations which also involve a different engine room arrangement. The owner can choose from twin VOLVO IPS950 D11 with 725hp with Z-drives and counter-rotating propellers (cruising speed of 30 knots, maximum speed of 36 knots - preliminary data). Alternatively, the owner may opt for twin CAT 12.9 engines, with 1,000 HP each, and Top System 75X surface drives (cruising speed 41 knots, maximum speed 45 knots - preliminary data), to which you can add the EASYJET system, that is usually reserved for larger vessels. A blend of essential design elements, lacquered frames and fabrics in soft grey shades, are interspersed with darker and contrasting details, characterising the design of the living area.
The flooring is finished in a similar grey-tone oak and further incorporates the colors of the other materials used on board. It is present in all settings, except for the cabins. A warm and soothing atmosphere is created by the use of these colors, which is further enhanced by an abundance of natural light coming through the large windows on all four sides. Or by the additional, indirect LED lighting installed in the ceiling, that can fully aluminate the interior, even at night. Beyond the dining and living area lies the plank, with a modern, sporty look designed by Besenzoni.
Over the helm station is a large sliding glass roof. On the portside is another smaller sofa and chaise longue. The 5X is the first Pershing below 60 feet where the owner can enjoy a fullbeam master suite with an ensuite bathroom and a dinette in front of the galley. A possible alternative is that the VIP cabin, equipped with bathroom that can be used as day head - and a dinette facing the galley.
All these stylistic solutions, designed by Fulvio de Simoni and Ferretti Group’s Engineering Department, give the 5X its unique style. Lacquered elements, essentials, and pristine white Vescom wallpaper are used to decorate the sleeping suites. The bathrooms, with ceramic top and basin, can be further equipped with decorative mosaics on the shower walls.
The Pershing 5X is all about customisation as many features can be tailored or adjusted to meet the owner’s personal tastes and requirements.
The recently-unveiled Lexus Sport Yacht 42 is a collaboration between the renowned car manufacturer and Marquis Yachts – the result is a bold and sophisticated yacht that will take your breath away.
IF soMEBoDy asked you to picture the perfect weekend yacht to wow your fellow yachtsmen, your friends and that special someone, all whilst putting on a great spectacle, the chances are that you’d want something completely out of the box. Well, how about something that looks straight out of a sci-fi film? Enter the Lexus Sport Yacht 42 and you might have found the answer. Luxury automakers designing yachts is no longer a novel idea. Hot on the heels of Aston Martin-Quintessence Yachts and Mercedes Benz-Silver Arrows Marine, Lexus has partnered with Marquis Yachts for its debut into the maritime world. Say hello to the bespoke 42-foot long, open Sport Yacht 42.
The innovative space-age style yacht boasts a modern rose gold exterior and weighs around 2000 pounds less than similar fibre-glass yachts (per the International Business Times), powered by twin 5-litre V8 engines with the capability of reaching a top speed of 43knots – not bad for a yacht of this size which can accommodate up to eight people.
At the helm of this imagination-pushing yacht, the captain will use two touch screens, a small one in the wheel and a much larger one beside it, both of which will help to navigate the open waters. Down below, the forward cabin comes complete with a comfortable sofa for six people as well as air conditioning for the hot days out at sea. There’s even a table where you can set down those chilled drinks, snacks and other belongings. The leather and wood details will have you in awe. In fact, the entire yacht and its revolutionary result is the work of Diesel Centre Frabetti Design of Italy and Toyota Marine engineers.

The Lexus Sport Yacht 42 isn’t for everyone. It’s likely that those who enjoy the need for speed and are well-versed in the performance side of yachts will not favour this futuristic vessel. Instead, those willing to gain the Lexus nametag and stand out from the crowd will certainly appreciate the sport-inspired design and forward-thinking functionality of this beauty.
And though traditional yacht lovers might feel that this creative energy is for the more flashy crowd, Lexus once again provides boat owners the chance to expand their lifestyle possibilities. At the same time, we can’t dispute that a rising tide of car makers shuffling out of the automotive realm and dipping their toes into the marine industry is a shake up that we’re excited to see continue through 2017.

Podium Finish
thE oManI tEaMs aim high at this year’s EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour (EFG SATT) as former newcomers Team Al Mouj and all-star veterans Team Renaissance returned to the sailing competition.
At the 2015 edition, Team Al Mouj Muscat were the newcomers on the block with ambitious plans to spring a surprise, which they duly did when they finished on the podium in the opening round of the epic two-week quest for honours. With backing from the Sultanate of Oman’s ultimate leisure and lifestyle destination in Muscat, they proved to be masters of ‘round the buoys’ racing at the three in-port events and clinched an overall second place finish behind winners EFG Bank Monaco. With multiple years of the SATT course and their own sailing records, Team Renaissance plan to keep competition high with Al Mouj and the wider race line-up. Since Fahad Al Hasni first competed in the inaugural EFG Sailing Arabia - The Tour (EFG SATT) back in 2011, he has dreamt of standing at the top of the podium, having won fair and square with a team made up of Omani sailors. The team came close in last year’s SATT with a near miss at the podium spot by just one agonising point behind Team Averda during a spirited offshore leg.

The Omani teams have welcomed the new, challenging route for 2017, announced earlier this year by organisers Oman Sail.
Comprising of 90 per cent Omani talent, Team Renaissance also has French navigator Guillaume Berenger aboard, who has to brush up on his Arabic to offer directions.
Fahad Al Hasni said: “We have consistently finished in the top half of the fleet, with a fourth last year. So it would be great to be on the podium this time.” He has become Oman’s most accomplished offshore sailor with the Round Ireland world speed record among his many accolades. “I have always found EFG Sailing Arabia - The Tour challenging and with a 90 per cent Omani crew, it will be even more of a test of our skills,” Fahad explained. For its part, Team Al Mouj brings a new skipper to the 2017 edition, with Frenchman Christian Ponthieu stepping into Nico Lunven’s shoes after being part of the successful campaign in 2016. As with last year, the team will comprise two Omani sailors, Sultan Al Balushi and Nawaf Al Ghadani as well as some familiar faces. Gilles Favennec returns as trimmer while Erwan Le Roux takes on the role of navigator with another French sailor Gregory Gendron and Will Harris from Britain ready to turn up the heat at the front of the fleet.
Christian Ponthieu commented on the thrilling route of EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour, which continues to draw the top-class sailors back to the Gulf sea-race track: “With the changes to the Tour de France a la Voile, EFG Sailing Arabia - The Tour has become one of the only events in the calendar where we can test our offshore skills in the long legs and our match racing skills in the in-port races. “This is a very interesting and varied regatta which rewards the best all round crew. We scored a lot of points in the in-port racing last year and felt we could have done better offshore so we will work hard at improving our performances on the long legs to get more points,” he admitted. “Plus, the sunny weather in the Gulf also means we can keep up our racing and training through the winter months, which is a real bonus. We get to visit places in this race that sailors don’t often see and we really enjoy that aspect of the event.”
The all-Omani crew comprising Team Renaissance features some familiar faces including three teammates from Oman Sail’s MOD70 MusandamOman Sail Sami Al Shukaili, Ali Al Balushi and Yasir Al Rahbi, all of them experienced EFG SATT campaigners. Abdul Al Mashari, a member of Team Renaissance last year and Akram Al Wahaibi will also be on board.
“I like pushing the guys to the limit since I know we are good as a team and we can get the most out of each race, whether we are inshore or offshore,” Fahad said. “We train very hard to be ready to face any challenge but the main reason for doing EFG Sailing Arabia – The Tour is to improve our overall sailing skills and get to be on the podium.
“It would be great to win but with our knowledge and experience, we are aiming to go one better than last year and finish on the podium in third place. Most of all we intend to enjoy the sailing, represent Oman with pride and have some fun,” he smiled. The Omani teams have welcomed the new, challenging route for 2017, announced earlier this
year by organisers Oman Sail. The fleet of identical Farr 30s will start at Al Mouj in Muscat with an inport race, then head north on the first leg to Sohar, a relatively short sprint of 105 nautical miles.
The second leg (140nm) will take them to Khasab, the capital of the Musandam Peninsula before the fleet heads to Abu Dhabi on a 153nm leg. It will be back to sea for a 160nm dash to Doha in Qatar where more points will be up for grabs in the second round of in-port races before the last and longest leg (205nm) to Dubai for a final round of in-port racing.
The 2017 EFG Sailing Arabia - The Tour is the seventh edition of the race, which combines long offshore legs with high action in-port racing at venues along the 763nm course.

Dr. Mohamed Mubarak Bin Daina, Chief Executive of the Supreme Council for Environment (SCE), to learn more about the important role of the SCE in protecting the natural and human environments in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
The SCE role is to “ To protect the environment and conserve its natural resources and develop and sustain it for future generations”. The legal mandate according to the Environmental law states the development of plans and policies to avoid harmful effects of activities that leads to damaging human health, agricultural crops, marine wildlife, and other natural resources and climate, and the implementation of these plans and policies, taking all appropriate actions and measures to stop the deterioration of the environment, and prevent environmental pollution and reduce it in all its forms, for the benefit of present and future generations through the achievement of sustainable development goals (Legislative Decree no. 21, 1996, Article #1).
The SCE regularly monitors water quality in the waters surrounding the Kingdom of Bahrain and takes necessary actions if the quality does not meet the national standards. The SCE is responsible for two marine protected areas in the Kingdom of Bahrain, Hawar Islands and Ras Sanad in Tubli Bay, which are listed as Ramsar Sites (totaling 5,200 and 1,610 hectares respectively) since 1997 under The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance. Wetlands are indispensable for the countless benefits that they provide humanity, ranging from freshwater supply, biodiversity, groundwater recharge, and climate change mitigation.
Tell us more about the work at Hawar and Tubli Bay…
Hawar is part of an arid archipelago of islands with marked diversity in marine habitats with mud flats, sandy beaches, rocky marshes and
salt marshes. The islands are characterised by colonies of breeding seabirds of regional and global importance such as the Socotra Comorant. Sea grass beds surrounding the islands provide important feeding grounds for dugongs and sea turtles, and serve as a pasture for shrimp and finfish. Tubli Bay features quiet ocean currents and low water salinity with a number of notable coastal and marine diversity habitats. Of the 80+ species of mangroves found around the world, the Kingdom of Bahrain is exclusively home to one, the Black Mangrove Avicennia marina. The largest mangrove forest in Bahrain is found in Ras Sanad Nature Reserve within Tubli Bay, and has long been revered by the public as a site of environmental sensitivity and importance.
Tubli Bay is also important nursery ground for Shrimp. Thousands of water birds utilise the abundant food resources available in the bay. Over 45 species of birds, mainly herons, shorebirds, gulls and terns, regularly visit the area during the migration periods and in winter. The Supreme Council for Environment has launched an ongoing mangrove plantation programme with the aim to cultivate and plant mangrove seedlings across Tubli Bay and Dohat Arad.
Share with us some of your hobbies
I’ve got many hobbies but because of work I’ve given up some of them. I love the sea and I love fishing. I don’t dive and I love horse riding. But, most of all, I love to read; because I can do it whenever I want to and wherever I want to, for example, even by the beach.
What are some of your favourite places to visit for waterfront relaxation?
In Bahrain, Jarada Island is a cool place for boating trips and to admire the sand and surrounding water. I feel like it’s a piece of heaven in Bahrain. People go there to have a great time, they stop and swim, grill food and just enjoy life. Outside of Bahrain, I love Monaco. It’s a place I have visit frequently. In the GCC, Dubai is fabulous because it has everything from relaxation to good shopping.
Tell us some of the environmental factors that make Bahrain special?
In Bahrain there’s a lot that makes the island’s environment special, even in relation to the world. We have the highest numbered colony for the Loha birds, with up to 250,000 of them. We’re working closely with Saudi Arabia and Qatar on a conservation project to save the dugongs (marine mammals). Also, we have a big project supported by the Crown Prince, where we will organise special diving trips for people to go and find oysters and revive the tradition of pearl diving.
Do you have a message for the young generation in Bahrain about the environment?
Today, the new generation is aware and well educated and aware of the environmental challenges. We expect the young generation to look after their surroundings and help to keep the country clean. In fact, we had some very good young people come out and take part in volunteer projects to clean up the smaller Bahrain islands – we get up to 50 volunteers at a time. We have to continue with this and I hope in the future, more people will join us in these efforts.

Hadag caught up with Samir Khemici, Founder of Paris-based Objectif Horlogerie ahead of the Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition to learn more about the art of watchmaking and the mysteries of his world-renowned workshop which is both a temple of high technology and a magical world of horology at your fingertips.
Hi Samir! Give us a snap shot of your career, how did you get started and what sparked your interest in watchmaking?
Since my earliest childhood, I have been attracted to watches. First by the aesthetic of the watch and second by the technicality and quality of the movements. Over the years, my interest in watchmaking increased gradually. After a Bachelor of Science and a short period working in finance, I reoriented myself and validated several diplomas allowing me to consolidate my achievements and progress in the world of watchmaking. The desire to transmit this knowledge developed into a passion, especially the technical side. I quickly found that the functioning of a mechanical calibre remains an enigma for both collectors and experienced enthusiasts thus the beginning of Objectif Horlogerie.
What’s the best thing and what’s the most challenging thing about watchmaking?
I think that the most difficult and yet
necessary thing is to be properly informed about the techniques of the past and about the profession and the broader sector of today. We make it our best practice to not dazzle and confuse our participants but to enlighten and nurture their passion! It is my greatest satisfaction to see a group of amateurs happy and satisfied at the end of a course.
Take us through the process of watchmaking, what are some of the most important tools of the trade and how difficult was it to master this craft?
To list the material present in a workshop would not be useful as the list is almost infinite! In all modesty and surely in all frankness the best watchmakers in the world say it, the work and the learning never stops. Especially with the evolution of technologies, reliability and the use of new materials within the sector. My goal is to share my knowledge and experience in this field. It is an exciting
universe, my curiosity and my desire make that I am constantly learning every day!
Tell us about your involvement at Doha Jewellery and Watches Exhibition (DJWE) and what visitors will experience?
We cannot wait to meet new watch enthusiasts during DJWE which is one of the largest Business to Consumer exhibitions in our industry. We will be running initiation workshops to watchmaking for about an hour at a time; the aim is to demonstrate an initial approach to watchmaking.
For the vast majority of amateurs or collectors, the practice of watchmaking is a mystery, we wish to open a door in this area and facilitate access to them through this discovery and experience run by our watchmakers.
Learn how a mechanical watch works in practice! An original idea that seduces more and more enthusiasts, everyday.

The launch of the award-winning 488 GTB, and its counterpart, the 488 Spider mark a formidable return to the classic Ferrari model designation with the 488 in its moniker indicating the engine’s unitary displacement. Designed by Ferrari Style Center, the 488’s sculptural forms are completely new, accentuating the car’s sportiness yet retaining the calssically clean, pure lines typical of Ferrari’s legendary styling.
Despite a number of exciting innovations, a nod to the past is clear, witnessed to the connoisseur through the 308 GTB styling of the 488’s flanks and the unparalleled Ferrari sound, and evident track DNA. The 488 had a task to live up to not only its predecessor, 458 Italia, but a bloodline that takes in over four decades-worth of award-winning V8-powered, mid-engined Ferraris. Since 1975, Maranello has been cranking up the power outputs and squeezing in ever more technical expertise into its V8, mid-engined range, creating a beautiful, fast and powerful stable. Here we take a ride through the cars that represent the 488 family tree.
Ferrari’s first mid-engined V8 product was introduced in 1975. The 308 is where the modern Ferrari Berlinetta bloodline truly begins. The product boasts Pininfarina styling, a 255bhp 2.5-litre V8, and originally, a Lotus-style glassfibre body, (only later did Ferrari switch to metal panels). Ferrari fans could select between the Coupe (GTB) or Targa (GTS) models.
Just as the 488 GTB is based, under the skin, on the 458, the 328 was a revised 308. Maranello enhanced the ‘Tipo’ V8 to 3.2 litres, liberating another 15bhp, and added what was then a cutting edge ABS. 7,400 Ferrari 328s were produced by the time the model was replaced by the new 348 in 1989, bringing the total for the 308/328 generation to nearly 20,000.
The 348 owes its name to its powerful 3.4-litre V8 engine, offering 300bhp, to comfortably outdo the competition of the era. Its Testarossainspired design was a tribute to the vibrant design tastes of the time, indeed technically, the 348 was more closely related to its big brother Testarossa than the 328. The V8 engine had been turned 90 degrees to be mounted longitudinally and set lower in the chassis. The sweet V8 had been expanded to 3.4-litres and now boasted an additional 30bhp. And this, coupled with the much improved aerodynamics, meant that the baby Ferrari was now capable of 170mph.
Upon the passing of Enzo Ferrari, the new President, Luca di Montezmolo, was keen to demonstrate Ferrari’s ongoing dominance in the supercar market. Hence the F355, a beautifully development of the 348 with 375bhp, Ferrari’s first paddleshift system, and superlative handling. With 109bhp per liter, the F355 engine had the highest specific output per liter of all normally aspirated production cars when it was first manufactured. With a full 8,500 revs available, the market was responsive to its speed and responsiveness. It shared many of the dimensions of the 348, but the body and sculpting was all new. It is still revered today as one of the great Prancing Horse products of all time.
Ferrari partnered with Alcoa to produce an entirely new all aluminium space-frame chassis that was 40% stiffer than the F355 which had utilized steel. Along with a lightweight frame the new Pininfarina body styling deviated from traditions of the previous decade’s sharp angles and flip-up headlights. The new V8 engine, common to all versions, utilizes a 3.6 litre capacity and generates 395 bhp. According to Ferrari weight was reduced by 60 kg and the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration performance improved from 4.7 to 4.5 seconds. Media noted that the 360 Modena press car was “ludicrously quick and sounded more like Schumacher’s weekend wheels than a street car.”
Literally ‘Challenge Street’ in honour of Ferrari’s one-make race series, the 360CS was the car that set a trend for a new lightweight Ferrari. The 420bhp makes this model the father of the Scuderia and Speciale models.
The F430 features a few Enzo Ferrari hypercar influences. The brand’s F1 inspiration was also starting to become evident, with faster gearshift times, optional ceramic brakes, a greater focus on aerodynamics and an electronically controlled E-differential. The 480bhp F430 was the first Ferrari to be fitted with the now familiar Manettino switch.
Shedding 100kg, and gaining 20bhp on the F430, the Scuderia was capable of 0-60 in 3.6 seconds, introduced as a faster, lighter version of the F430. Fitted with the ‘Superfast2’ semi-automatic transmission, Ferrari claimed it was as quick as an Enzo round the Fiorano test track. This car was introduced at a time when the brand was experiencing up to two year waiting lists for the F430, and demonstrates Maranello’s unbridled enthusiasm for introducing new cars out of passion, not necessity.
The spider version of the Scuderia was created to celebrate Ferrari’s 16th Formula 1 Constructors title. The Spider boasted all of the F430’s stunning technology, itself the product of a close working relationship with Ferrari’s Gestione Sportiva F1 racing division. The F430 Spider’s all-aluminium bodywork was also carefully strengthened to guarantee both occupant safety and the structural rigidity demanded by a high performing car. The fully automatic hood and folds away under its own flush-fitting tonneau cover, allowing Ferrari’s engineers to carefully hone the aerodynamics of the car with the hood down.
Launched in 2009 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the 458 was the all-new successor to the F430. The 4.5-litre engine produces 562bhp, propelling the 458 to 60mph in 3.2 seconds. Faster than the Scuderia around a circuit, the wondrous 458, complete with that aero-elastic winglet, is considered one of Ferrari’s greatest achievements.
Somehow, the Speciale tops with 458 Italia with an output of 597bhp, an extraordinary achievement that it manages with ease. Thanks to shedding 100kg and with the addition of yet more active aerodynamics, the car is able to pull 1.3G under acceleration. The 458 Speciale allowed Ferrari to win in two categories at the prestigious International Engine of the Year Awards for the fifth consecutive year.
Forty years on from the unveiling of Ferrari’s first ever mid-rear-engined v8 berlinetta, the 308 GTB, the prancing horse opens a new chapter in its 8-cylinder history. Delivering unparalelled performance, the 488 GTB makes the extreme power exploitable and controllable to an unprecedented level. An exceptional engine and sophisticated aerodynamics combined with refined vehicle dynamic controls radically improve the already razor-sharp responsiveness of Ferrari’s road cars to near-track level.
The Ferrari 488 GTB’s all-new 3902 cc V8 turbo is at the top of its class in terms of power output, torque and response times. It delivers 670 cv at 8,000 rpm and a response time to the accelerator of just 0.8 seconds (at 2,000 rpm in third gear), making it the new benchmark for this kind of architecture, thanks in part to innovative work carried out on the turbine to reduce friction and inertia. Ferrari’s engineers dedicated great attention and resources to perfecting the car’s sound too, creating a new soundtrack that is full, clear, progressive and totally distinctive, as expected from any Prancing Horse engine.
Coninuting a bloodline that began in the 1970’s, 488 Spider places the driver perfectly at the heart of the machine. Launched at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, the 488 Spider is a variant of the 488 GTB with a folding hardtop, like the 458 Spider it replaces.
The Ferrari 488 Spider is the first RHT (Retractable Hard Top) introduced from Maranello on a car of this particular architecture. This solution ensures lower weight (-25 kg) and better cockpit comfort compared to the classic fabric softtop. Just like all previous spider versions of Ferrari’s models, this is a car that is aimed squarely at clients seeking open-air motoring pleasure in a high-performance sports car with an unmistakable Ferrari engine sound.
This 2-seater roadster is only 50 kg heavier than its coupe sibling whilst matching the 0-62 mph sprint at 3 seconds. Beneath the engine cover throbs the 3902 cc turbo-charged V8 that debuted on the 488 GTB. Its performance levels are nothing short of extraordinary: a maximum power output of 670 CV combined with maximum torque of 760 Nm at 3000 rpm send the 488 Spider sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in 3 seconds flat and from 0 to 200 km/h in 8.7 seconds. This is also an exceptionally efficient engine as it is not only 100 CV more powerful than the previous naturally-aspirated V8 but also has lower CO2 emissions.
The Spider’s dynamic behaviour is effortless on even the most challenging routes. It is remarkably easy to drive on the limit thanks to flawless handling even on the most demanding of roads.
Watch this space for the legacy of the 488 GTB and the 488 Spider. The story continues…

For all of you car enthusiasts looking for the perfect mix of performance and style, Bentley’s most successful models, the Continental GT is ready to impress with a whole new suite of contemporary design updates and exquisite features. Hadag gets behind the wheel to test it out…
The revisions to the exterior aesthetic are completed with the addition of new wheels to the range of 20” and 21”
the Bentley Continental Gt is a car of spontaneity; it gives drivers the freedom to take to the open road on their own terms, exemplifying a spirit of life and the independence of exploring like no other car in its category. So, when a machine is as pristine as this model, how do you improve it? The answer: exterior evolution and modern refinements.
Set to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in early March, with deliveries starting this summer, the updated Continental GT has been refreshed with a complement of new exterior design features, aimed at sharpening the on-road presence of the iconic Grand Tourer. A new front bumper combines with a smaller radiator shell and new, more pronounced fenders to lend a more assertive and confident stance to the front of the car. The fenders now feature a new vent, complete with a graceful metallic “B” adornment, which serve to emphasise and enhance the renowned Bentley “power line” that flows rearwards from the front arches. New bright chrome fender badges for the V8 S and W12 models now match those applied to the GT Speed.
At the rear of the car, the boot lid is now more sculpted, with a pronounced aerodynamic profile to the trailing edge. The rear bumper has been reshaped and widened for an added sense of power, and now features full-width brightware. The V8 S and GT Speed also gain a new rear diffuser design to further differentiate the performance-focused members of the Continental family.
The revisions to the exterior aesthetic are completed with the addition of new wheels to the range of 20” and 21” designs available. Enhancing the GT’s iconic silhouette further, three new paint colours are available: Marlin (a rich metallic blue), Camel (a soft golden tone) and Jetstream (a light, bright metallic blue). Basically, if you’re all about physical appeal with internal beauty to match – this car is going to be on your NEED IT list! The visual upgrades continue inside the luxury cabin of the Continental range. A new and contemporary straight-fluting pattern adorns the four generous seats; while the Mulliner Driving Specification (standard on GT Speed) gains a tightened, “small-diamond” quilting pattern reminiscent of a tailored British jacket. Driver controls are all new, with an optional, more ergonomic and sports-orientated steering wheel and larger gear-shift paddles incorporating tactile knurled metal embellishers.
Brightware elements across the console are updated, the driver’s instrument panel receives new dials and graphics for a refreshed, more modern look, and the beauty of the new interior is now illuminated by LEDs. The centre console also features a new black gear lever surround, unifying the style of all driver controls. For V8 and V8 S coupe models, a new hidden storage compartment is fitted between the rear seats, capable of accommodating and charging electronic devices including iPads.
Discerning, successful individuals will appreciate the new modern and tactile features that help maintain Bentley’s reputation for interior style and usability. This is one car that you’ve got to drive for yourself to believe it!

118 luxury rooMs including 31 suites. Great amenities, exceptional comfort, and outstanding service... qualities that can only be described as a Four Seasons standard. And if the city of Alexandria is the jewel of the Mediterranean sea, Four Seasons San-Stefano is the pearl of this great city.
We reached the hotel at night, and despite the darkness of the cold winter season, we sensed the beauty of the city touching our hearts through the sounds of the waves breaking the bustling noise of the sleepless streets.
We walked through the prestigious doors to the classy lobby to be welcomed with the festive season’s decoration. The colours of beige and cream are calm and graceful and match perfectly with the golden frames of the huge paintings scattered on every wall. A quick check in with a warm greeting from the gentle lady at the front desk and up to our room we go.
We were ecstatic upon entering the room; the powerful presence of the yellow (one of our three favourite colours) and flawless decor,
had us at ease. The high ceiling gives a feel of grandeur, a large closet in the wall, an elegant desk with two chairs, and a bed that defines the meaning of true comfort are all the things that we loved about the room. One comfy lazy chair with foot rest, TV, internet, mini bar and thoughtful amenities add to the immaculate hospitality. The bathroom is quite large and well equipped with luxury L’Occitane bath products - perfect!
On a floor dedicated to the gastric art, you find most of the 10 food destinations offered by the hotel. At Kala the main restaurant that holds a Greek name meaning “good”, the atmosphere is extra fresh with bamboo and white wood furnishing and white and blue fabric that extends to the curtains, to blend so artistically with the large window overlooking the gorgeous private beach.
We regret not having enough time to visit the Lebanese restaurant Biblos, but we definitely enjoyed an intimate night at Stefano, the Italian restaurant offering southern Italian cuisine with seafood specialties. The restaurant is basically a cosy circle centered with a huge pole and decorated so simply with four, large vases recessed in the walls all around.
If you’re a dedicated or passionate swimmer, the icy cold days will not stop you from visiting the indoor heated swimming pool that lays under a glass dome and lets in

the warm rays of the shy winter sun. In summer time, we bet the hotel guests would probably ask to sleep on that beautiful sandy beach 24/7! The cool thing is, guests access the private beach through an exclusive underground tunnel.
Shisha smokers have the share of the lion inside the hotel as many outlets offer shisha such as Blue Bar and Fresca Cafe & Gelateria
Kids are not to be forgotten as well. A kids club offers many options for child care and entertainment throughout the day. The presence of a commercial shopping mall attached and easily accessed from inside the hotel gives the option of a lively play area for the kids and a great shopping experience for mothers at the same time.
Ladies and gents can both enjoy fitness and exercise in separate gyms, located in the individual SPA areas. For us, a brilliant, luxurious stay at the Four Seasons must end with a lavish visit to the SPA! And, of course, the treatment must be inspired by the ancient methods of pampering royalty. We were lucky to try Cleopatra; we started with a bath in warm milk followed by 50 minutes of deep massaging with the silky almond oil. What a great way to end a long day touring the historically-charged city.
We would actually highly recommend booking a half day or full day tour with the hotel’s experienced guides especially for those who are visiting the captivating city for the first time. Don’t forget to end the tour with a plate of “rez bel haleeb” which is similar to rice pudding. A great snack especially when smothered with milk ice-cream and covered in nuts!
All in all, the Four Seasons strikes again and this gtime in one of Egypt’s most stunning cities; Alexandria, giving a sense of place indeed.
