RIVA'S LATEST MARVEL SETS SAIL

Riva proudly launched the third unit of the Riva 50Metri, its latest marvel, at the Riva Superyachts Division in Ancona, Italy. This stunning megayacht showcases the finest craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology and a dynamic look. Created through a collaboration between Officina Italiana Design, Ferretti Group’s Strategic Product Committee led by Piero Ferrari and the Group’s engineering department, the Riva 50Metri is a true testament to Italian design and innovation. Featuring a steel displacement hull and an aluminium superstructure, the yacht spans across five decks, boasts a maximum beam of nine metres and can accommodate 10 guests and nine crew members. Offering luxurious living spaces and exceptional comfort, her sleek profile is characterised by three horizontal bands running from stern to bow, complemented by a striking metallic silver exterior.

Every aspect of the superyacht has been carefully designed to enhance the owner's experience and maximise enjoyment of the outdoor areas. The indoor-outdoor integration creates spacious environments for relaxation and entertainment, apparent in the main

lounge. The expansive 120sq/m sundeck provides a variety of options for ultimate leisure, including a sunbathing area, a dining table with barbecue, a relaxation area with sofas and pop-up TV and a luxurious hydromassage pool.

Delivered to its proud owner early this year, this magnificent vessel sets new standards of elegance and sophistication.

ENTOURAGE, the second superyacht in the esteemed Amels 60 range, boasts an awe-inspiring exterior design by the renowned Monaco-based Espen Øino International, complemented by naval architecture from Damen Yachting. However, it is the exquisite interior that truly steals the show. Each Amels 60 superyacht offers a unique interior design, and ENTOURAGE's experienced owner entrusted the Canadian design studio, Burdifilek, to craft a haven of luxury and serenity.

Having previously conceived exceptional commercial environments such as New York's Club Monaco and the W Hotel Atlanta, the Burdifilek team embarked on their first superyacht project with ENTOURAGE. Working closely with the owner, they transformed his clear vision into a sanctuary at sea, where every design aspect exudes the highest level of thoughtfulness and refinement. "The owner knew exactly how he wanted to entertain and how he wanted the flow through the spaces to be,” explains Diego Burdi, Cofounder of Burdifilek. “When the sun sets, the yacht transforms, shifting from day to night, evoking a completely different feeling." The result is a floating oasis of timeless elegance, ultimate comfort and a sense of peace conveyed through a monochromatic palette.

guests and crew. The main deck offers the owner a spacious extra-large suite, featuring a fold-down balcony, a comfortable lounge area, two bathrooms and a neighbouring twinbed guest suite. The lower deck boasts four additional suites, accommodating up to 12 guests in total. For the 13 crew members, a modified crew area offers enhanced amenities, including a larger laundry room and dry store. A testament to the focus on the onboard experience, the design team at Burdifilek even reversed the structure of the staircase to create a more visually stunning and spacious passage. "I think the staircase is beautiful and very innovative," says Arie Midavaine, Project Manager at Damen Yachting. The innovative design choice provides ample space to move around by tucking away the structure on the outside, a departure from previous models. The absence of domes in the ceilings, a feature inspired by the owner's real estate experience, further adds to the yacht's allure.

ENTOURAGE is designed to maximise the sense of freedom, especially on the expansive sun deck, which has been extended in the aft by 1.5m and boasts a Jacuzzi pool surrounded by sunpads, a large bar and barbecue, an al fresco dining area and a shaded L-shaped lounge. The sun awning poles have been cleverly repositioned on the outside of the railing, allowing for an even more spacious environment.

Throughout the yacht, guests can indulge in a variety of dining and lounging options, including the swim platform, main deck aft, bridge deck saloon and a casual dining set-up in the main saloon.

“At the request of the owner, we extended the bridge and sun deck aft, which has impacted the use of these decks in such a positive way that we decided to implement this change for all future builds,” says Jan van Hogerwou, Damen Yachting's Commercial Executive North America.

Collaborating closely with Amels and build supervisors Moran Yacht & Ship, the owner has customised every aspect of the project, leveraging the builder's well-balanced Limited Editions technical platform and fast build time. Notable exterior modifications include the seamless stream of windows, a departure from the signature angular windows, adding a sleek and uninterrupted flow to the vessel's design. The foredeck provides room for two tenders and two WaveRunners, while the Beach Club aft holds extra recreational items, such as SEABOBs, wakeboards and diving gear. The Beach Club area also includes a sauna, day head and fitness equipment.

"We are very proud of the many customisations we were able to implement into this platform, which is a testament to the Damen Yachting engineering and production team," says Sean Moran, Managing Director at Moran Yacht & Ship. As the owner has appointed Moran as the charter central agent for ENTOURAGE, their expertise and contribution have undoubtedly elevated the yacht to new heights.

A LUXURIOUS SUPER SUV

Embodying the essence of the M badge, the all-new BMW XM seamlessly integrates exceptional power and technology designed to enhance the driver's experience.

MW M GmbH have released their much anticipated, all-new BMW XM. This is the brand's first BMW M original since the BMW M1, unveiled in the late '70s, and their first ever highperformance car with an electrified drive system.

Hadag spent an unforgettable day in this novel creation, thanks to the helpful team at Euro Motors.

EXTERIOR

The moment we laid eyes on the new XM, we were taken by its bold shape and unique design elements. At the front, the large kidney grille features horizontal slats surrounded by an ambient lighting feature and gold trim. This visually expressive front end houses two headlight units, typical of BMW's luxury segment models. Hinting at the sporty prowess of the vehicle are large air intakes located at each side of the front bumper.

The distinctive lines of the XM continue at the flanks, underscored by the gold trim running from bonnet to boot, a feature that pays tribute to the original M1. We loved the shape of the competition-style side-view mirrors, along with the M-specific wheels that come complete with weighted centrepieces. This ensures the BMW logos remain the right way up, even when the car is in motion.

At the rear, the vertically stacked dual exhaust system is neatly integrated into the rear apron. The LED taillights include a three-gill lighting feature and flicker like a fire when on. Finishing off the exterior in style are the prominent diffuser, adaptive dampers, limited-slip rear differential and the now familiar gold trimming.

INTERIOR

Entering the XM, we were welcomed by comfortable and supportive, multi-adjustable sports seats with illuminated XM-embossed logos on the headrests. The interior's exceptional blend of luxury and sportiness is combined with a solid build quality and houses a driver-orientated cockpit.

The interior roof features a prism-style design that lights up when the car is opened, as do the ambient lighting located under the interior door handles, the various air vents and the front speakers of the Harman Kardon surround sound system. All lighting turns red when the Sport mode is engaged. A sports steering wheel with carbon fibre panels, aluminium pedals and M-trim seat belts are all included in the cabin. The rear offers plenty of head, shoulder and leg room for three adults to travel comfortably, with plenty of storage options, numerous USB ports and dual-zone climate control.

The 527-litre storage capacity of the luggage compartment can be greatly increased with the rear seats folded down, making the XM practical for everyday family usage. This area also features a 12V socket, along with a designer bag holding the hybrid charging cables.

INFOTAINMENT & TECHNOLOGY

The BMW XM is equipped with BMW Live Cockpit Professional, delivering the M-specific multi-sensory vehicle experience, iDrive. This system operates through a large BMW Curved Display consisting of a 12.3-inch information display (diagonal) and a 14.9-inch control display. We found this easy-to-navigate operating system very responsive and exceptionally helpful in negotiating the numerous options. A state-ofthe-art Head-Up display, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are also fitted as standard.

PERFORMANCE & SAFETY

Press the start button on the new XM, and a distinct sound composed by the critically acclaimed Hans Zimmer (composer and music producer) is what you'll hear. He had a hand in creating the soundtrack for this outstanding SUV. The XM's engine is a classically high-revving 4.4-litre V8 with cutting-edge M TwinPower Turbo technology. Combined with an electric motor and an eight-speed automatic

gearbox with torque convertor, this effective combination offers three operating modes and a full-time, four-wheel drive experience.

The M HYBRID drive system of the XM delivers an overall combined output of 653hp. The SUV accelerates from 0-100km/h in a mere 4.3 seconds and has an electronically capped top speed of 250km/h.

We found the drive quality and responsiveness of the vehicle to be nothing less than exceptional, especially in Sport mode. Fortunately, the designers have included a highperformance braking system capable of taming the abundance of power.

The M Hybrid button on the centre console is used to select one of three operating modes: HYBRID, ELECTRIC and eCONTROL. The eco-friendly ELECTRIC setting allows cruising with zero local emissions at speeds up to 140km/h and over a maximum distance of 82 to 88km.

BMW have fitted a full suite of driver assistance features as standard including Front Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Evasion Assistant, Alertness Assist and a Speed Limit Info System. Additional advanced features are available as optional extras.

REVOLUTIONISING THE SUPERCAR MARKET

Hadag had the opportunity to experience the exceptional performance of the recently launched Lotus Emira, acclaimed as the most accomplished supercar ever crafted by Lotus.

This month, thanks to the team at Adamas Motors, Hadag got behind the wheel of Lotus’s all-new, midengine sports car, the Emira. As this was to be our first Lotus test-drive experience, we were intrigued to discover what this iconic British sports car manufacturer is producing in 2023.

EXTERIOR

Instantly demanding our attention were the sculptured surfaces and technical detailing of this exotic-looking supercar. The Emira is the first sports car to carry the new design language originally showcased by the award-winning Lotus Evija hypercar.

The inspiration provided by the Evija is obvious at the front end of the Emira, where the prominent leading edge of the bonnet draws the eye like a magnet to the current iteration of the iconic Lotus roundel – making its first appearance on a new Lotus sports car. The unique-in-class exit vents integrated into the bonnet are further evidence of the Evija’s influence, effortlessly guiding airflow over the body and optimising the aerodynamic nature of the vehicle. The standard wing-inspired vertical LED headlamps are yet another tip of the cap to the brand’s hypercar.

As we moved to the flanks, the influence of the Evija’s striking exterior design became even more apparent. Crisp feature lines and fluid surfaces complement the shrink-wrapped cabin that tapers toward the rear end. The sculptured sections cut into the doors hint at the car’s performance capabilities and lead the airflow towards the intake ahead of the rear wheel. Vents cut into the muscular rear haunches, along with 20-inch wheels – specially developed for the Emira – further highlight its athletic prowess. At the back end, the integrated bumper is dominated by the Lotus wordmark that sits above an Evija inspired, body-coloured panel. On each side, a flat C-shaped LED light cluster linked by a slimline high-level brake light adds a further touch of class to an already exceptional exterior design. As a final flourish, Lotus have included a black section housing twin exhaust pipes on either side of the number plate, along with an air diffuser situated underneath to assist downforce.

long-distance journeys, we found the car’s two standard four-way electric adjustable seats to be nothing less than sublime.

Due to the dramatic supercar-like low stance of the Emira, you sit mere inches from the road surface. This unique driving position instantly imbues the driver with the feeling of being on the starting grid of a racetrack. This sense of speed and sportiness has been achieved while managing to match the best-in-class ingress/ egress and headroom.

Every design detail of the contemporary cockpit environment places the driver at the forefront of the Emira experience. We highly appreciated the pure ergonomic design, perfectly placed instruments and premium materials used throughout.

Further notable interior features include a flat-bottomed sports steering wheel with metallic spoke detail and integrated controls, a wraparound dashboard that blends into the door trim, a raised gear shifter and ambient wraparound interior lighting.

Aside from the surprising number of storage spaces throughout the cabin, luggage can be stowed behind the two seats (208 litres) or in the 151-litre capacity boot to the rear of the engine.

INFOTAINMENT & TECH

The new Emira’s infotainment system is accessed through a 10.25-inch centrally mounted touchscreen and a 12.3-inch TFT (Thin Film Transistor) driver’s display behind the steering wheel. We found this responsive display, with its clear images and graphics, to be user-friendly and extremely useful. Additionally, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are both integrated as standard.

The Emira also marks the first-ever automotive partnership between the highly respected British brand KEF and Lotus. KEF has supplied an exceptional 10-channel premium sound system featuring its signature Uni-Q technology.

Producing 400hp and 317Nm of torque, this mechanical monster can surge from 0-100km/h in a mere 4.2 seconds and deliver a top speed of around 290km/h!

PERFORMANCE & SAFETY

The Emira has two engine options, a Lotusengineered 2.0-litre, four-cylinder unit from technical partner AMG and the beloved 3.5-litre V6 of our test model. Originally fitted in the Lotus Exige and Evora, this V6 is calibrated by Lotus. Coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission, it delivered what we can only refer to as a vastly superior driving experience. Producing 400hp and 317Nm of torque, this mechanical monster can surge from 0-100km/h in a mere 4.2 seconds and deliver a top speed of around 290km/h! Besides the high-performance braking system of the Emira, the car boasts an extensive range of driver assistance and safety features. These include adaptive cruise control, launch control, rear parking sensors, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), an anti-collision system, fatigue alert, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane change assist, road sign information and a vehicle speed limiter.

ontblanc's latest Star Legacy Grey Capsule collection is a testament to the majestic mountain’s south-facing rocky side, where snow struggles to settle on the vertical face. Building on the triumph of the Montblanc Star Legacy Blue Capsule, which showcased an enchanting blue glacier pattern on the dial, the watchmaker introduces a novel outlook with its newest addition. This line draws inspiration from the mesmerising textures of the rock formations, presenting a sophisticated grey glacier pattern dial design that captures the essence of this awe-inspiring landscape. The colour palette draws inspiration from the exposed cold rock on the south side of Mont Blanc, presenting a new face of elegance that reflects the mountain's unique charm. Composed predominantly of granite, the Mont Blanc massif showcases myriad shades of grey and flecks of gold within its internal structure. The formation of this magnificent mountain dates back over 100 million years, resulting from the collision between the African and European tectonic plates. As time passed, successive periods of glaciation moulded Mont Blanc into the natural wonder we see today.

The Montblanc Star Legacy Collection is characterised by an array of exquisite design elements. Drawing inspiration from Minerva pocket watches of the early 20th century, these timepieces feature pebble-shaped cases, domed sapphire crystals, onion crowns, railway minute track and leaf-shaped hands. Additionally, the iconic Montblanc emblem is present on the crown and seconds hand, creating a distinct signature style.

TO PARADISE

Liz O’Reilly was delighted to be among the first group of GCC-based writers invited to take a sneak peek at the new Avani+ Fares Maldives Resort and found a little piece of paradise waiting to be discovered.

oarding a direct flight, the few hours to Male literally flew by (excuse the pun) as myself and my colleague discussed the adventure in store.

The Maldives is an archipelago of 26 natural ring-like atolls and, on arrival at Velana International Airport, we were to board a seaplane out to this newest offering from Minor Hotels. A first for me, I was excited for the 35-minute seaplane journey which was a little bumpy, a lot noisy but absolutely enchanting in that it offered us endless views of the azure blue Indian Ocean and its sprinkling of small island atolls, some home to resorts and others the uninhabited desert islands we all dream of.

Avani is a well-established hospitality brand with properties in more than 15 countries and now it is adding the plus to its brand – offering everything Avani is known for, plus a little more.

From the handpicked staff – ebullient GM Riaan Drever personally interviewed all the team members, ensuring we encountered a crew who imparted a seriously high-quality yet family feel of ‘service with love’ – to the oh-so-telling little extras, such as the softest of pillows (yes there’s a choice) and abundant drinking water supplied in re-useable glass bottles, stamped with the legend ‘Liquid Therapy’ and printed with information on water saving and recycling (the whole resort has a zero-plastic-waste policy), we could truly feel the ‘plus’ factor.

Following a swift boat transfer from the seaplane to the resort’s jetty, we were greeted by numerous staff forming the heart sign with their hands to welcome us (did I mention that here, everything is done with love?!) and proffering refreshing cold towels and fruity drinks. What a delightful welcome!

My Island Home Blissfully, the island has no cars, so we hopped onto a golf buggy and headed along a pristine sand track to our accommodation. My Sea View Studio Villa was so calming, surrounded by lush green foliage, which offered both privacy as well as a heavenly fresh scent, particularly during the monsoon cloudbursts – much loved by this desert-dwelling girl.

The big comfy bed with its abundant fluffy pillows looked directly out of floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors to my own private infinity pool. And between the aforementioned verdant greenery, a gentle, almost secret, path led to the beach, a glimpse of the aquamarine waves just visible from my private deck. Imagine getting up to this, a truly magical awakening.

The villa offered everything you could possibly need for a comfortable stay, from a kettle and coffee machine to day robes, an iron and flatscreen TV. Again, going that little bit further and demonstrating the resort’s eco credentials, I was greeted by a plate of fresh fruit and a small pot containing delicious, candied orange peel dipped in dark chocolate – a note explaining that rather than wasting fruit peels, the chefs come up with innovative ways to use them.

The villa’s décor, similarly to all those we visited

across the island’s multiple accommodation options, was muted and comfortable. Pale woods and high-quality materials belying the serious amount of thought that had gone into every detail from the pre-set air conditioning, which automatically switches off if a door is left open, to the generously sized sofa that could easily convert to a bed. A tasteful wall mural in shades of blues for the sea and pale, creamy yellows, evoking the sand and sunshine, was a gentle reminder of the paradise that lay beyond my door. And the bathroom. Oh, the bathroom! Of course, there were the usual amenities – gorgeously soft, fluffy robes and towels so huge I could literally wrap myself from neck to toes, a wide-headed rain shower that must have been at least 50cm across and a range of lotions and potions from Malin + Goetz, held in refillable stoneware containers, each smelling more fabulous than the last and leaving my skin and hair feeling incredibly soft and nourished.

But, the absolute star of the show for me was the outside wet room, accessed both from within the villa and a separate external door allowing you to rinse off without traipsing salt and sand through the living area. Equipped with both a rain shower and a huge, deep bathtub, I thought my little heart would burst with gratitude at the sight! And trust me, if you visit, as you really should, there are few experiences quite like luxuriating in such a tub beneath the star-filled Maldivian sky, especially during a warm rainstorm, should you be so lucky.

Time To Relax

Let’s talk about spa treatments. When you’ve had a full day of work followed by an overnight flight (or, to be honest, just because you’re on holiday and you feel like it) what better way to relax than with a trip to the spa. Described as offering ‘spirit, space and sense, all in perfect harmony’, I couldn’t agree more. Shortly after arrival, a massage was in order. Sipping on a refreshing, fruity drink, I filled in a tablet with my health details and then settled onto one of the most comfortable massage beds I’ve ever encountered for an hour of blissful kneading with perfect pressure and warmly scented, aromatic oil. The AvaniSpa has a medispa room, treatment villas, steam and sauna, with options including pain management and IV drips alongside the more conventional spa offerings. Whether you choose one or many, you certainly won’t be disappointed.

I also tried an evening relaxation session with singing bowl sound therapy on the beach. I have to admit I was a bit sceptical but with the breathing techniques imparted by expert instructor Shalin, who also conducts sunrise yoga, coupled with the resonant vibration from the bowls, I found myself completely calmed and tranquil. A pretty amazing experience that I would highly recommend. The resort also has a fully equipped gym but, I have to admit, that’s not my idea of relaxation!

Wana Mola – A grinding stone and rolling pin used to blend fresh spices and leaves into pastes for marinating, grilling and curries. A fusion of flavours that is the inspiration for the island’s cuisine.

On our first day, and several times thereafter, we ate lunch at The Skipjack Bar, a gorgeous space which sits beside the infinity pool and looks directly out onto ocean waves putting on a show of every shade of cerulean you can imagine. At night, the wooden decking glows with myriad pinprick lights, mirroring the star-filled sky above. For the friendly staff, nothing is too much trouble. On one of our visits, we asked to go off-menu to try some genuine Maldivian fare and were almost immediately presented with two delicious curry dishes, one featuring lush chunks of tender local tuna (low-impact fishing, for the record), the other a deeply flavoursome concoction redolent of coconut and gentle spices.

A truly sociable spot, we had a wonderful evening of dining and dancing to the tunes of a DJ who, wonder of wonders, actually accepted requests and took great delight in getting a diverse group of guests throwing some shapes and mingling on the dance floor. Another night there was karaoke! This really is a place to let loose and make memories. The menu at Skipjack is diverse and I would challenge anyone not to find something to enjoy. My personal recommendation, however, would be the tuna tataki with its light citrus/soy dressing. Don’t miss out on the cheesy truffle potato wedges, which are every bit as good as they sound. And the chocolate cake, deeply indulgent and fully satisfying, I had this more than once and would definitely go back for more!

Since we were there for a soft opening ‘first look’, Skipjack was also where we got to sample the menu for Charcoal, which was still to open. A fabulous concept which will involve dining around a large charcoal grill on which foods are cooked over coals made from the island’s plentiful coconuts – Fares island, on which Avani+ Fares sits, is an ancient coconut plantation. We were treated to a veritable

feast, which included one of the best tuna tartares I have ever tasted – and that includes fresh off the docks in Tokyo. The concoction in which the fish was cured was absolutely sublime, delicately citrusy with hints of ginger and, I think, sesame. I could quite honestly have eaten only this and retired happy. Being Charcoal, there was also a lush selection of steaks and other meats and, true to that ethos of inclusive service, my veggie companion was delighted with pumpkin soup and risotto. Ocean Terrace is the resort’s main restaurant where we breakfasted royally each day. From eggs cooked every way you can think of to smoked salmon or a mini-Wagyu steak and from homemade granola and overnight chia pudding to Maldivian specials such as Mashuni – tuna and coconut sambal – and pancakes with local coconut honey, everything was superbly fresh and tasty. You could choose to sit inside the bright and airy dining room or head out to the deck and eat facing the beach. A perfect way to start the day. This venue was also where we got to sample the menu of the still-to-open Tribe. Another great concept, a space where ‘tribes from all over the world meet, bringing their food and drinks to share with each other’. Staged around a stunning, outdoor, wigwam-style pavilion bar, Tribe offers a selection of sharing-style plates from Thai to Japanese, from the plains food of Colorado, the tribal dishes of the Amazon River and the valley

foods of the Basque country to Middle Eastern favourites. I would particularly recommend the Charcoal Grilled Leeks with chimichurri and smoked almonds from the Amazon section, a first for me since I don’t usually like leeks and was amazed to find these so tender and tasty. And, even better, each section of the menu comes with its own suggested beverage pairings to perfectly complement the regional flavours.

On our last night, we were thoroughly spoiled with a truly exceptional Adrift dinner on the beach. I’ve mentioned the amazing skies several times, but you really need to experience the stars in a place where there is no light pollution to appreciate their utterly breathtaking beauty. A table was laid for us on the sands and we were serenaded by a talented guitarist as the waves rippled gently on the shore. A simple salad followed by tuna steak and meringue dessert have never tasted so good!

Avani+ Fares has various other outlets too, including Petit Bistro, the first kids-only restaurant in the Maldives catering to young guests, with healthy and universally loved dishes. This is alongside an extensive dedicated area where young visitors will be fully entertained at AvaniKids and Teens Club.

The Land of The Reef

Of course, no visit to the Maldives would be complete without some maritime adventure. And, with Avani+ Fares situated on the Baa Atoll, which is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with countless marine protected areas, we were more than eager to explore under the watchful eyes of dive master Jean and his professional team. We headed out by boat to snorkel in the warm waters, hoping to spot the plentiful manta rays which call this spot home. Though they evaded us on this visit, we did encounter sea turtles and several species of colourful fish which seemed completely unbothered by our presence among them. A quick on-board visual briefing from Jean allowed us to identify the likes of blue and yellow striped fusiliers and beautiful butterfly fish. Harmless sharks and dolphins also inhabit these waters and, on a later sunset cruise complete with drinks and canapes, we were lucky enough to spot dolphins at play. Watching the sunset over our paradise island as monsoon storm clouds built behind us was a truly magical experience. I must confess that, coming from our scorching temperatures, I later danced in the rain!

We snorkelled but Avani+ Fares has full dive facilities and will also offer PADI diving courses for anyone who wants to qualify to make the most of these wonderful, life-filled waters. And, for those who prefer their adventures above the waves, there is a fully equipped water sports centre offering the likes of stand-up paddle boarding, kayaks and windsurfing, as well as a range of fishing options.

And So, Farewell

As you can probably tell, I was thoroughly impressed by this new and highly thoughtful property. The weather was perfect, mostly sunny with gentle breezes and the occasional monsoon cloudburst. Vienna, the enchanting capital of Austria, is a treasure trove of art and culture, boasting a myriad of world-class museums. Within close proximity to The Leo Grand Hotel, visitors have the opportunity to explore the rich artistic heritage of the city. While strolling from the hotel to these museums, one can also enjoy delightful dining experiences and indulge in some retail therapy, enhancing the overall Viennese experience.

The Belvedere is a magnificent palace complex that houses two prominent museums: the Upper Belvedere and the Lower Belvedere. The upper is renowned for its impressive collection of Austrian art, including the iconic masterpiece ‘The Kiss’ by Gustav Klimt, my favourite painting of all time. This museum showcases a wide range of artworks ranging from the Middle Ages to the present day. Just a short walk from the Leo Grand, visitors can enjoy the picturesque views of the palace gardens. Along the way, you will pass charming cafés and restaurants, offering the ideal opportunity to savour the world-famous Viennese delicacies or enjoy a cup of coffee.

A stone's throw away from the Belvedere is the Albertina Museum, home to one of the most important graphic art collections in the world. Visitors can immerse themselves in the works of renowned artists, such as Dürer, Monet, Picasso and many more. Easily accessible on foot from the hotel, as you traverse the streets, you can explore fashionable boutiques, upscale shopping malls and traditional Viennese markets – yes, I added a touch of retail therapy to my cultural excursion.

The Leopold Museum, another notable institution, is situated in the MuseumsQuartier, a short distance from The Leo Grand Hotel. Dedicated to Austrian modern art, it showcases an extensive collection of works by Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt. The neighbourhood is known for its trendy cafés, vibrant bars and boutique

shops, offering a delightful blend of cultural immersion and urban exploration.

I also made my way to the Kunsthistorisches Museum, located near the famous Ringstrasse, which is a true gem for art lovers. This magnificent museum, and I have to emphasise the word MAGNIFICENT, houses an extraordinary collection of fine art, including works by Vermeer, Rembrandt and Titian. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll from the Leo Grand Hotel, marvelling at the stunning architecture and grandeur of Vienna's Ringstrasse. Along the way, I discovered many elegant restaurants serving traditional Viennese cuisine and returned to savour the city's culinary delights while enjoying the splendid surroundings. The Leo Grand Hotel is surrounded by high-end shops, including designer boutiques and luxury department stores, where you can find the latest fashion trends and unique souvenirs. For foodies, Vienna is a paradise, with a wide range of restaurants serving traditional Austrian cuisine, as well as international dishes. Some of the must-try dishes include Wiener Schnitzel, Tafelspitz and Sachertorte, a chocolate cake that is a Viennese speciality. In terms of things to do, Vienna has something for everyone, from visiting historic landmarks like St. Stephen's Cathedral, Schönbrunn Palace and the state opera house to exploring the city's museums and art galleries. The hotel is also close to the famous Naschmarkt, a bustling market where you can find fresh produce, spices and souvenirs.

For travellers from the Middle East, summer is an amazing time to visit Vienna offering a welcome respite from our own scorching temperatures. This month, Hadag spent four days and three nights in the multi-award winning, five-star Mandarin Oriental, Doha, to experience it in all its splendour.

Our Arrival

We had an opportunity to play tourist in our own backyard when we were invited by the prestigious Mandarin Oriental, Doha to spend a few days in this exquisite hotel.

As soon as our feet touched the tarmac outside the Mandarin Oriental, Doha, we were greeted by friendly and attentive staff ready to assist us in any way possible. After a swift and hasslefree check-in, I soon found myself in my exclusive Club Studio Suite, appreciating what was to be my home base for the next few days. The Mandarin Oriental, Doha is a five-star hotel in the centre of Msheireb Downtown Doha. We found the architecture and décor a masterful blend of chic and contemporary design with subtle touches of Qatari heritage. The hotel contains 117 rooms, 41 suites, 91 serviced apartments, 10 exceptional dining spots, meeting facilities, event venues and an award-winning spa.

The Rooms

With four categories of rooms to select from: Superior, Deluxe, Premier and Club Deluxe, along with eight suite categories comprised of: Club Studio, Studio, Junior, Deluxe, Premier, Panoramic, Baraha View Suite and the Royal Suite, there is accommodation to suit all guests’ needs and desires.

My Club Studio Suite housed many beautiful features and decorative elements. These included the design incorporated into the curved gilt ceiling relief, the Qatari heritagethemed carpets, the eye-catching mosaic tiling and many other captivating details. Staying in this room also granted me access to the MO Club Lounge, an experience exclusive to Club Deluxe Room and Club Studio Suite patrons that comes with many benefits, including personalised service, privileged dining and private amenities.

Fortunate enough to be given a tour of the two-bedroom Royal Suite on the top floor, we saw how the rich and famous experience the Mandarin Oriental, Doha. This exclusive accommodation features a private entrance, an open-air courtyard with reflecting pools and a private plunge pool. From this unique vantage point, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the city and a bird’s-eye view of Barahat Msheireb town square.

Fine Dining

Throughout our stay, we had the privilege of dining at some of the outstanding culinary locations within the hotel.

Mosaic

Breakfast at Mosaic proved to be a delightful culinary occasion. This venue provides a Silk Route dining experience incorporating flavours and cuisines from Asia, the Middle East and Europe, all prepared at its nine live cooking

stations. We sampled an array of sumptuous dishes throughout the meal, all freshly prepared in front of us. We particularly enjoyed the variety of Asian-style, wok-fried dishes.

IZU

We were cordially invited for lunch at IZU to experience its recently launched menu. Showcasing all the flavours of French Mediterranean cuisine, along with dishes inspired by the chef’s travels to England, Spain and the Middle East, we felt truly spoilt by the time the dining was done. With indoor and outdoor seating areas, along with the mezzanine floor offering an even more refined experience, this venue is sure to satisfy even the most discerning of restaurant connoisseurs.

Liang

Lunchtime at Liang proved to be another appetising affair at the hotel, this time with a distinct Chinese flavour. The venue offers superb service and an authentic Oriental dining experience. Along with the relaxed yet upmarket atmosphere, the meals on offer were nothing less than delicious. We so enjoyed the classically prepared dim sum, with its fresh ingredients, that we had to order several helpings.

Mandarin Cake Shop

One of our favourite spaces in the hotel proved to be the Mandarin Cake Shop. This quaint venue specialises in all things sweet, producing a range of cakes, artisan chocolates and delicious pastries. Perfect for a quick refreshment and bite to eat, we can honestly say we have never tasted better macaroons anywhere.

Spa & Wellness

During our stay at Mandarin Oriental, Doha, we felt privileged to experience the hotel’s award-winning, five-star spa. Spread over 3,030sq/m, this high-end facility includes nine spacious treatment rooms, two VIP suites, an exclusive couples' suite, extensive heat and water facilities and the hotel’s first-class Fitness and Wellness Centre.

I was delighted to try the hotel’s signature Inner Strength massage. This nurturing treatment uses a blend of aromatherapy and healing massage techniques to ease physical tension and emotional anxiety. Whatever the intention, the result was a truly relaxing and energising experience.

Homeward Bound

All too soon, it was time to return home, but not before we had the chance to explore the ever-expanding city of Doha.

Taking in the spectacular skyline and visiting the mesmerising museums, a vibrant food festival, world-renowned restaurants, bustling souqs and beautiful beaches, we were spoilt for choice. By the time we found ourselves seated on the return flight, we felt that despite previous visits to the Qatari capital, we were only now properly introduced to this fascinating city.

Embarking on an exquisite gastronomic journey, Luke Bennett uncovers LPM, the French Riviera's culinary paradise at Al Maha Island.

Bright, white walls depicting colourful images of a Mediterranean lifestyle greet you on arrival at LPM, an elegant, fine-dining restaurant harmonising food, drink and atmosphere to create a unique and unforgettable experience. Walk through the large, glassed doors and you’ll instantly be swept off to the French Riviera: every detail immerses you further into the illusion that you’re dining along the Côte d'Azur from the opulent décor to the refined menu to the stylish, well-dressed hosts who welcome you with a smile and an air of sophistication.

LPM’s charismatic interior offers an insight into the Belle Époque period of history when France experienced a wealth of artistic and cultural development. An eye-catching, polished welcome bar sits at one end of the restaurant opposed by an open serving area where chefs weave their culinary magic, centred by an imposing yet charming grape section. The stylish ambience is elevated further with the addition of contemporary, vibrant street art that offers an intriguing juxtaposition to the 19th century theme that radiates throughout the restaurant. Given LPM’s idyllic location along Al Maha boulevard, we chose to seat ourselves on the spacious decking that gifts you impressive, sweeping views across Lusail Marina, adding another memorable detail to your visit. Still mesmerised by the scenery, Kato (our friendly waiter for the evening) arrived to explain that the menu is a celebration of the finest ingredients from the French Riviera and an à la minute cooking approach is utilised: each dish is cooked to order and instantly brought to your table to ensure ultimate freshness with the option to share and savour amongst your dining party. The extensive hors d’oeuvres menu offers up a tantalising variety of symbolic dishes perfect for sharing. The first dish to appear was a French classic – Terrine De Foie Gras. The smooth texture ensured it was satisfyingly easy to spread across the accompanying sweet, perfectly toasted brioche. The addition of salt, pepper and balsamic provided a wonderful harmony to the rich, buttery taste of the pâte. Bringing a touch of freshness to the table was a Salade De Chou-Fleur, a delightful concoction of al dente cauliflower varying in colours and textures. The salad was lightly dressed with a flavoursome almond and caraway sauce that left a distinctive aftertaste on the palate and a sprinkling of sweet golden raisins and salty capers added further depth of flavour.

The menu boasts an assortment of carpaccio for diners to choose from and Carpaccio De Sériole Du Japon did not disappoint. Delicate slices of yellowtail engulfed by a punchy citrus sauce with sweet undertones sat gracefully on a bed of silky guacamole. The star of the hors d’oeuvres was a dish synonymous with the finest French cuisine: Escargots De Bourgogne. Now, some readers may be slightly cautious about tasting snails, but I’d encourage you

to try something new; there’s a reason snails are considered a delicacy! An alluring aroma signified the arrival of this exquisitely presented dish, and the use of steel tongs makes for an even more memorable experience. Each morsel of snail was surprisingly meaty in texture and smothered in a rich garlic butter that elevated the taste to unforgettable heights.

LPM’s desire to source and serve only the highest quality ingredients is evident and the skilful chefs meticulously prepare each course with subtle enhancements to showcase the excellent produce. Two signature dishes that prove this point and are a definite ‘must-try’ during your visit were the Coquelet Au Citron Confît and Côtelettes D’Agneau Vivienne. Extremely tender, the juicy fibres of the chicken were flawlessly matched with a flavourful layer of crispy skin. A touch of sweetness and zest along with a delectable depth of flavour are gifted by marinade that coats the spatchcocked chicken. Grabbing our attention with their stylish plating, the lamb cutlets were generous in size and exceptional in both taste and texture. The expertly rendered, smoky exterior offers a delightfully crispy and salty element to match the succulent lamb flesh marinated in a palate-pleasing blend of honey, lemon zest and thyme. A flavoursome aubergine and pine nut caviar brought a luxurious, silky spread to enhance each delectable cutlet. Partnering the exceptional main courses, we opted for fresh and crunchy stems of broccolini lightly brushed in olive oil and chilli alongside a creamy potato gratin with a joyously crisp top layer and the subtle sweetness of nutmeg. Bringing our delightful dining experience to an end, we were served two enticing, well-known desserts. First, the quintessentially French Créme Brûlée À La Vanille. Plunging my fork through the thin, caramelised shell resulted in the symbolic and highly satisfying ‘snap’ and revealed a creamy yet refreshingly light vanilla custard. To follow was a refined wedge of vanilla cheesecake with a delicate, crumbly base, partnered with a berry compote that brought a pleasurable sharpness to complement the velvety, rich taste of the cream cheese. Throughout the evening, an attentive sommelier suggested the ideal accompanying beverages for each course and was yet another example of LPM’s attention to detail. Romantic setting. Classy ambience. Outstanding service. Exceptional food. LPM certainly has all the ingredients to ensure diners have the finest, authentic experience of French cuisine.

Offering a tranquil retreat for all ages and preferences, Jumeirah Gulf of Bahrain Resort & Spa is nothing short of a palace from the Arabian Nights. Ideally located on the south-west coast of the Kingdom, it is the perfect spot for a family staycation, a weekend with friends or loved ones or even an exquisite dining experience. That’s what I discovered at Zahrat Al Fayrouz, a restaurant serving up a selection of Levantine dishes, located on Basement 2. Moderately lit, it beckoned to us with soothing Arabic instrumental music. The décor, traditional yet exhibiting modern touches, is impressive to say the least. It’s in keeping with the opulence of the rest of the hotel; Oriental rugs draping the reception desk, dark wood furniture upholstered in crimson and Levantine turquoise, pottery displays, paintings, mesh partitions and archways. The restaurant is spacious with private dining sections and an extensive outdoor area – perfect to unwind with a hookah – Zahrat Al Fayrouz has a selection of flavours you can enjoy.

Our generous host guided us to a table of our choice and soon after, the feast commenced. First came the mezze. It’s typically served with a bread basket of what we were told is Turkish bread – airy and topped with sesame seeds. You can order other varieties separately; we went for Pita. Among the cold appetisers, we had hummus, baba ghanouj, moutabel and muhammara. I thoroughly enjoyed the smoky flavours of the grilled eggplant in the baba ghanouj and moutabel. The muhammara, made from chilli paste, garnished with buttery chopped walnuts and infused with a tangy pomegranate sauce and fruity olive oil, was silken and delicious.

Our hot appetisers included Batata Harra, cheese rakakat, spinach fatayer, meat sambousek and fried kibbeh. I dived into the Batata Harra, fried and spiced potato cubes. Zahrat Al Fayrouz’s version has a good kick to it, which appealed to my Indian palate. Next in the line of favourites for me were the beef kibbeh. Crispy on the outside, they encased an exceedingly flavourful minced meat filling, cooked in intense, earthy spices that provided a gentle heat. We also tried Lahmeh Bel Ajeen Manakish, a pizza-like dish topped with aromatic minced lamb and toasted pine seeds for crunch.

Before our main course arrived, my companions and I cleansed our palates with some refreshing salads. While you can never go wrong with fattoush and tabbouleh, the jarjeer stood out for me. A bed of pungent green rocket leaves and juicy sliced tomatoes and onions, all brought together with premium quality olive oil, vinegar and pomegranate sauce. What I love about pomegranate sauce is that it’s tangy but with a hint of sweetness, which is quite different when compared to the citrusy zing of limes and lemons.

The first main course to arrive was the Vegetarian Thareed. A traditional Middle Eastern stew, thareed usually also has meat.

However, this version was an absolute delight. The broth had so many levels of flavour with the spices and aromatics. It complemented the light, saffron-infused long-grain rice topped with fried onions. The dish is also served with Arabic bread that you can dunk in this rich curry, topped with raisins and blackcurrants. This was followed by the mixed grill platter, which featured Bahraini tikka – zinged up with the local black lime spice – meat and chicken skewers and a lamb chop. We constructed our own bitesized wraps around this juicy, meaty goodness and topped them with the accompanying grilled onion, chilli and tomato. Our cold mezze came in handy here, serving as sauces. That’s the beauty of Levantine dining – you can go back to previously served courses as you please. Next came a hearty plate of Mansaf, which we were told by our generous host is a Jordanian dish, popular in Palestine too. Zahrat Al Fayrouz offers a variety, from Lebanese and Iranian to Greek-inspired creations. The Mansaf comprised of a lamb shank sat royally on a bed of yellow stout-grained Oriental rice. The meat was braised and exceedingly tender to cut and eat. It complemented the rice, which was topped with toasted almonds for crunch. The lamb is coated in laban jameed – yoghurt made from goat’s milk, which offers a slight tartness to every bite and works supremely well with the robust flavours of the flesh.

If there’s one dish you try at Zahrat Al Fayrouz, let it be the spinach and cheese baklava. I never knew baklava could be prepared as a savoury creation. A splendid medley of eggs, spinach, potatoes and salty Akawi cheese layered with filo pastry and drizzled with a buttery chickpea relish, it blew my mind. And the Kuku Sabzi, an airy Levantine egg muffin, was served with a yoghurt dip and utterly moreish.

We washed down this rich feast with a fizzy concoction of hibiscus, oranges, lemons and mint laced with star anise, which was refreshing. For dessert, we kept it simple – or so we thought – with a selection of ice creams. The flavours were exotic and I personally have never had them anywhere else in Bahrain –hibiscus sorbet, date mascarpone and orange blossom. The scoops sat on a crumble that complemented each particular flavour. A sweet and pleasantly surprising ending that will surely make us return for more.
