And, in the blink of an eye, half of 2023 has passed, and what have you done? I know I have done much less than my plans at the beginning of the year (maybe in the next half of the year? Fingers crossed!). However, a new home has been one of my goals, and this is finally happening this month. Talking about homes, we bring some exciting highlights from Salone del Mobile.Milano 2023, one of the biggest design trade fairs in the field, and the travel section showcases a selection of luxurious villas in the world where you find a home away from home.

Our beauty pages are filled with new products, from CHANEL's LES BEIGES summer line to Givenchy eye care and Gucci’s latest foundation. We had two pampering sessions this month, a Hammam at Mondrian Doha and a full-body massage at The Westin Doha Hotel & Spa. Both treatments were a delight – get inspired by them to choose your next spa therapy.

We nourished our bodies with beautiful food at LPM at Al Maha Island with a French spread and tried Hispanic dishes at El Faro in the surroundings of Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl – Doha. The dining experiences were memorable and best to be shared with loved ones.

Motoring Meets Interior Design

During Milan Design Week 2023, Bentley Home launched a collection in collaboration with three world-renowned designers and architects: Federico Peri, Riccardo Cavaciocchi and Carlo Colombo. The capsule reaffirms the substance and elegance of Bentley Home Design in partnership with leading creatives engaged for their talent and innovative use of sustainable materials, organic forms, expert craftsmanship and cutting-edge production technology. Federico Peri created a table series, including a dining table, a side table and a coffee table, which is available in a new Paper Marble finish by Paper Factor. Architect Riccardo Cavaciocchi, the founder of Paper Factor, has created a tabletop finish similar in look and feel to marble but created using ‘raw paper’ and natural pigments. And architect Carlo Colombo designed a sofa and armchair, inspired by a Bentley car with a fine wooden frame and beautifully proportioned curves, and a bed.

Custom Made

Celine has launched its La Collection De Saint-Tropez capsule inspired by the French Riviera. The brand’s designer Hedi Slimane moved to the region when she joined Celine in 2018 and for the past five years, she has been exploring Saint-Tropez, reflecting the sophisticated nostalgia of the area in parallel with the brand’s Parisian codes. La Collection De Saint-Tropez campaign was shot along the French Riviera coastline and to make it extra special, Celine customised a vintage Mini Moke vehicle. The small summer beach convertible car was initially designed for military purposes. It first appeared in 1964 but quickly became a symbol of freedom and leisure in many seaside towns, especially in Saint-Tropez, where French actress Brigitte Bardot famously drove it. The automobile has been personalised with a Triomphe wooden steering wheel, a Triomphe canvas hood and a dashboard featuring tan leather elements, wicker seats and spare wheel protection. A golden Triomphe signature appears on the wheels and gear shift – a cute element added to the campaign.

Tory Burch has launched its Tory Sport line for the first time in the Middle East. The collection debuts with an assortment of pieces for golf, tennis and other active pursuits, including the brand’s beloved Chevron leggings and tracksuits. Tory Sport will be accessible in the Middle East exclusively on regional websites. Launched in September 2015, Tory Sport develops performance activewear that celebrates the elegance of sport. Inspired by the grace and strength of athletes, it balances high-tech fabrics with classic designs. The collection is crafted to reflect the beauty of the game and the empowering role that sports play in all aspects of a woman’s life. Founded in 2004 in New York City, Tory Burch is an American luxury brand known for timeless pieces and rich storytelling that evokes optimism and joy. The collections include ready-to-wear, handbags, footwear, accessories, jewellery, home and beauty.

A Shared Spirit of Style

The watchmaking brand Jaeger-LeCoultre has announced Lenny Kravitz as a new Ambassador for the maison. The multifaceted musician, singer, songwriter, producer, multiinstrumentalist, actor, designer and photographer is the archetype of the modern man. Since the beginning of his career, Lenny Kravitz has been defiantly original, always following his own path, steadfast in his artistic vision. With a strong parallel between his creative philosophy and that of Jaeger-LeCoultre, the relationship with the maison has come very naturally. A watch enthusiast since childhood, when the musician became fascinated by his father’s chronographs, he says: “I feel very drawn to Jaeger-LeCoultre. The way they combine such a high level of craftsmanship, design and function in their watches – that really resonates with me.” One of his favourite watches is the Reverso, which he paired with a black silk jumpsuit and layered jewellery when he performed at the 2023 Oscars ceremony.

The Milanese brand Pomellato are honouring their heritage with these colourful additions to the Iconica collection.

The Iconica collection is composed of utterly refined designs. In the new pieces, its sculptural silhouette, synonymous with traditional goldsmithing techniques, meets with the opulence of the Byzantine era, reminiscent of Pomellato’s early lines. They also add another dimension by including extra colours to the range with three rings, earrings and necklaces.

The luxury house is known for exploring novel ways of incorporating hues into jewellery and is focused on refining both the cut of the stones and setting techniques. The artisans work closely with the design team to create jewels celebrating traditional handmade skills while adding modern twists. The result is a stunning contrast between the geometry of the colour-saturated gemstones and the voluptuous and smooth curves of Iconica.

The chosen gems are red garnet, London blue topaz and green peridot. These three gemstone colours are dear to Pomellato and, over the years, have appeared in many precious collections. Pomellato have revived and refined the historical English flush-setting technique to achieve a clean, timeless look. Excess gold is removed to create a perfectly sized hollow into which the custom-cut, baguette-shaped stones are embedded. The gold is then firmly pushed against the gem to hold it in place.

The open chain of the lariat-style necklace is held together with an adjustable gold slider covered in tinted gems. This innovative sliding system has a versatile all-gold mechanism that glides over the delicate chain allowing different ways to wear the necklace. The earrings hug the lobes, and six gemstones are set around the entire sweep of gold.

Iconica presents exciting ways to wear the jewels with elegant informality. Worn on their own, the new items bring an injection of colour to an outfit but are equally appealing in a stack of classic gold Iconica rings or mixed and matched with diamond pavé versions.

Empire is MARLI New York’s new fine jewellery collection inspired by one of the city’s most famous landmarks: the Empire State Building.

Empire is the brand’s new addition to their fine jewellery collection. It explores the Empire State of Mind (also a well-known song by Alicia Keys and Jay-Z) by combining Old New York glamour with a modern aesthetic, marvellous shine with magnificent hues, and delicate details with bold designs.

A Rose-Coloured RENEWAL

Parmigiani Fleurier launches Tonda PF Split Seconds Chronograph timepieces in 18-carat rose gold.

Swiss luxury watchmaker Parmigiani Fleurier has unveiled its latest Tonda PF Chronographe Rattrapante collection, which has been tastefully reinterpreted in 18-carat rose gold.

Dedicated to short-time measurement, the Tonda PF Chronographe Rattrapante (Split Seconds Chronograph) with its two-column wheels is an exceptional watchmaking instrument.

The newest interpretation of the timepiece is presented with an 18-carat rose gold case and bracelet. It also features a sandblasted platinum dial complemented aesthetically by rose gold hands and applied rose gold hour markers.

The watch’s sapphire crystal case-back allows the wearer to admire its elegant 18-carat rose gold movement, which features open-worked bridges and a barrel bearing the signature of Michel Parmigiani, founder of the brand, who created the calibre to mark the maison’s 20th anniversary.

Using Parmigiani Fleurier’s most distinctive complications, the watch is powered by Calibre PF361, a manually wound movement that beats at a rate of 5Hz or 36,000Vph, allowing the chronograph time intervals to one-tenth-of-a-second precision. The split-seconds chronographs have been skilfully designed to measure intermediate (split) times and are equipped with two superimposed chronograph hands – one is dedicated to the chronograph and the other to operate the split-seconds function via the pusher integrated into the crown.

Moreover, the timepiece’s balance wheel is held in place by a cross-through bridge in 18-carat rose gold – a material used to form the entire structure (baseplate and bridges) holding the moving parts. The architecture of the calibre has been designed to ensure its longevity and enable it to withstand shocks.

The case and bracelet are integrated into an overall fluid design, framed by the maison’s signature knurled bezel and featuring teardrop-shaped chronograph pushers.

The collection’s movement components are adorned with finishes that are a signature of Parmigiani Fleurier, including hand-bevelled edges on all of the bridges. The Calibre PF361 component comprises 309 parts, including 35 jewels, and offers a 65-hour power reserve.

The simplistic aesthetic of the dial is designed to enhance the readability of the hours and minutes as well as the chronograph indications, which are complemented by a small-seconds indicator at six o’clock. The tachymeter and pulsometer scales encircle the dial, while the central split-seconds hands are distinguished from each other by different colours. Complementing the 18-carat rose gold applied hour-markers are the skeletonised hour and minute hands also in the same material. The new rose gold Tonda PF Split Seconds Chronograph is offered in a limited and numbered edition of 30 pieces. An additional alligator leather strap is also provided with the timepiece.

The sensitive eye contour needs extra care and Givenchy has launched the Firming and Smoothing Eye Care to help you fight signs of ageing in this area.

Our complexion is exposed to many different sources of strain: stress, urban pollution, screen light and sleep deprivation, to list some of them. The delicate skin around the eye ends up being most affected. To protect this area, Givenchy has added a new product in its Skin Perfecto range, the Firming and Smoothing Eye Care. CLEANSING FOR THE BODY AND SOUL

Hammam is an exfoliation therapy very popular in the Middle East. Hannah Nesbitt headed to Mondrian Doha to try ESPA’s take on this traditional treatment.

The perfect self-indulgent treat was provided courtesy of ESPA at Mondrian Doha. With views over the Lusail cityscape, this elegant and luxurious day spa offers the highest quality products and services to match.

Highly professional and well-trained staff provide treatments in separate male and female spa facilities, each offering equally spectacular and tranquil relaxation spaces. From the moment you arrive at the spa, the care and consideration given to guests is of five-star standard. A spacious, open-plan reception area allowed for an initial consultation and a delicately presented, gently scented, warming face cloth and floral tea drink. Rabina, my therapist for the day, greeted me and led the way to the incredibly appointed ladies’ spa section. First impressions of the adequately sized changing areas, with numerous vanity counters, were soon overwhelmed by the beautifully detailed, intricately patterned, pink mosaic tiling

adorning the floors and curved walls. The first of the relaxation areas was truly breathtaking, with its cascading crystal chandeliers and waterfall showers exuding grandeur and opulence. The spectacular tiling continued through to the second relaxation area, which included different seating options, to sit and take in the great views of the water and the reflections of the setting sun. The third and final relaxation area was fully enclosed to allow guests to switch off from the outside world and indulge in the whole experience. The wonderfully fluffy bath robes and slippers enable guests to move around the different spa areas with complete comfort and modesty.

As part of the appropriately named Love Yourself spa package, I was taken to the private Hammam area, featuring traditional Middle Eastern patterns and designs in relaxing white and grey tones. Calming low-level music gently floated through all areas, accompanied by the sounds of running water.

The different elements of the multi-step process of the Hammam experience were explained in detail. A Hammam is a traditional Middle Eastern cleansing ritual to purify the body, involving an assortment of steam, water, exfoliating scrubs and massage treatments.

The treatment began with an initial cleanse; warm water was poured over the body from traditionally designed, ornate silver bowls. Second, a refreshing green and black olive soap was applied to my skin before moving to the steam room for a short period. The process continued in the privacy of the individual treatment room, where a heated Hammam table was the focal point. The next steps involved floral-scented body scrubs to invigorate and exfoliate the skin, using gentle pressure to massage the body in the process. A hair mask was applied and massaged into the scalp to encourage shine in the hair and help with any issues of dryness or hair fall. A final rinse left my hair and skin feeling soft and wonderfully smooth. Throughout the whole Hammam experience, chilled water was available and encouraged, in order to maintain maximum hydration.

Following the Hammam, I was led to the equally tranquil massage treatment room, where ESPA products were carefully displayed in the dimly lit space. Once again, Rabina showed her

skill and attention to providing a truly relaxing environment. Any problem areas were discussed, ensuring a specifically tailored experience.

Rabina maintained my privacy through her professionalism, ensuring the correct pressure was applied and I was suitably comfortable. And a final briefing was given, outlining any key recommendations for future treatments for any problem areas. Following my massage, the relaxation areas provided space to continue the peaceful experience; a haven of tranquillity following the extraordinary treatments. The day bed overlooking the twinkling night lights of Lusail city and passing boats in the nearby ocean offered the perfect place to enjoy a rejuvenating ginger tea, accompanied by a small dish of dried almonds and nuts to add to the authenticity of the Middle Eastern Hammam.

In addition to this package, there is a wide variety of other options to suit one’s personal needs, including their famous

Ladies Wednesday package. An extensive range of products is available to purchase at the reception area to continue with the luxurious treatments at home. The staff were knowledgeable and able to explain which were suitable for different requirements. Attention to detail throughout was evident and added to the overall decadent experience. I left with an overwhelming feeling of inner peace and tranquillity and would highly recommend it for anyone conscious of their overall physical and mental well-being.

From the moment you step inside, you are transported into a realm of bliss; the air is filled with sweet notes of jasmine, enveloping you in a comforting embrace, while the soothing sounds of a gentle waterfall cascading down a backdrop of smooth rocks lull you into a state of deep relaxation.

Arriving at the reception desk, I was warmly greeted by the spa director, Ilga, who offered refreshments and took a moment to introduce me to the treatment of the month, which is also the one that I will try: the Body and Mind Relaxing Ritual. Always looking to add a personal touch, she explained that she would often take a moment to check in with guests after their treatment to discuss their experience. Before long, I was welcomed by my lovely therapist, Luisita.

Venturing further into the corridor, the contemporary décor continues seamlessly; grey marble glints with golden hues, radiating elegance, and preparing you for what can only be described as a rapturous hypnotic experience. Entering the changing room, the fresh scent of green tea relaxes me whilst slippers and a robe have been prepared ahead. Each changing cubicle also contains a shower consisting of a rainfall shower head (which I have the pleasure of using midway through my treatment).

The Body and Mind Relaxing Ritual is an intensive full-body treatment that removes toxins, helps reconnect with inner healing powers, and ultimately immerses you into a calm state. The entire treatment lasts for two hours: an intense fullbody scrub to leave the skin deeply cleansed and stimulated; a bathing ritual to soothe; and a 60-minute full-body massage with a green tea aromatherapy oil to release tension (not to get ahead of myself, but indeed it does).

Entering the spa room, I am immediately drawn to the centrepiece: a large bathtub already prepared with warm water, foamy bubbles and velvety maroon rose petals. It is difficult not to get too excited at this point! I begin the spa experience face down on a bed with a warm towel placed on my back to lull me into a state of calm. Guided to take deep breaths, I inhale the subtle scent of mixed flowers clustered in potpourri form just beneath the base of the bed – what a sweet and soothing start! Beginning with the body scrub, Luisita uses a blend of sea salt and green tea oil to deeply exfoliate my skin. I’m told that this blend can improve skin texture, help with circulation and reduce inflammation (each of which I am in desperate need of). Throughout the entirety of the treatment, sounds of gentle rain and waterfalls fill the room, maintaining a heavenly and peaceful environment. I carefully turn over (Luisita covering me at all times and guiding me through each and every step), and we reconvene. She is mindful of using a firmer hand on drier areas of the body, such as the knees, elbows and soles of the feet, whilst using a gentle circular motion around the abdomen and thighs. Once all my skin is baby smooth, I am ready for the pinnacle of relaxation – taking a soak in the bathtub. To relax entirely, I am offered hot tea from a choice of calming chamomile, floral Earl Grey and green tea, the pot arriving with some decadent pieces of dark chocolate to truly immerse myself into the luxurious experience.

And then, the final event – the massage. This was a full-body massage using green tea aromatherapy oils, with other options also available. The fluidity of Luisita’s movement allowed her palms to work harmoniously to relieve any aches and pains, with specific attention paid to pressure point muscles. This massage was unlike any other. My mind quickly unravelled and I had pretty much fallen into a gentle slumber midway through. To finish off the experience that can only be described as heavenly (apt considering it is the Heavenly Spa), the therapist offered a firm scalp massage followed by a gentle facial massage that rounded off the entire treat harmoniously.

I departed this beauty haven with every sense awakened and every muscle rejuvenated. It is safe to say that the perfect sleep was had that night after a visit to this sanctuary.

Artistic Blooms

Jonathan Cohen’s Spring 2023 collection is an ode to flowers with a strong feminine influence.

Isn’t it great to find something you thought you had lost? Jonathan Cohen found a box filled with books he had collected over the years, many of which he assumed he didn’t have anymore. As he sat to sift through them, he realised that there were various books of women artists that he loved – this discovery became the inspiration for this collection.

The books were by Frida Kahlo, Lee Krasner and Judit Reigl, women who somehow were overshadowed by their male partners for a period or had subverted ideas around gender and were driving forces within their respective artistic movements. Jonathan envisioned them in their studios or homes, seeking refuge in their work while gaining strength and freedom. This driving force created an impact on the process of creation of this collection. The prints are centred on Jonathan’s favourite flowers: Matilija poppies, snapdragons, hydrangeas and ranunculus. Additionally, the looks are painted in polka dots and rainbow stripes with a psychedelic twist giving the impression that they are melting. The paintings were then transferred into jacquard knits and embroideries, enhancing the craft and the story of these empowered artistic women.

The work with leather is a partnership with Evolved by Nature (a biotech company) and offers a contrast to the colour-rich prints, bringing toughness and fearlessness to the capsule. Much like the women Jonathan drew inspiration from, the Spring 2023 collection is layered and nuanced, offering his unique perspective on them.

Salone del Mobile.Milano is one of the most anticipated home fairs in the world. The event happened recently in Milan, Italy, and we’ve rounded up some exciting showcases. Check them out!

OHLALA Homes

Last year, OHLALA headed to Milan to attend the event; this year, we watched from afar. However, we have our favourite highlights.

Every two years, the Salone alternates a dedicated section to kitchens and bathrooms with EuroLuce, an exhibit dedicated to lighting. For 2023, EuroLuce was back and highly anticipated since the last one had to be cancelled due to the pandemic. More than ever, the interior design ideas presented at Salone are inspired by everyday life. A common narrative observed is that the brands based their concepts on family memories and habits, but also praising comfort with an elegant atmosphere banishing worry and anxiety from home spaces. There was an air of softness and gracefulness from lighting, sofas, storage units and bookcases. Surprising materials found a way of looking cohesive, such as leather and steel, and wood proved once again to be one of the prime materials. We noticed a tendency to use curved structures, supporting the concept of cleanliness and comfort. Ergonomic designs and eclectic usage were some of the characteristics also on display.

As seen lately, the concept of minimalism is giving space to homes with more character, and to support this trend, colour is one of the key elements. The use of different shades promotes a perception of positivity and a sense of well-being while also creating a difference between environments. Bold hues are used to add accents, but a well-coordinated mix of soft palettes helps to give dimension. These are some of the brands with exciting concepts:

MILLA & MILLI

The furniture company celebrate design through their love for craftsmanship and mother nature references with a passion for architecture and wood. They also embrace environmental responsibility by planting a new tree for every piece of furniture sold, embodying their commitment to protect and respect our natural world.

Milla & Milli use fine Croatian wood, allowing them to create exclusively with solid material, pushing the boundaries of what can be done in the world of designer furniture. A mix of solid ash wood and simple yet strong steel compose their Eternel bookcase, Bloom coffee tables and Bloom ICON cabinet.

For this brand, design is about shaping matter with ideas. Guided by the values of simplicity, lightness, challenge and wonder, MDF Italia creates furniture capable of coming alive and fitting in diverse environments. With the idea of being essential, functional and flexible, the products have no intention of stealing the aesthetics of the surrounding area but rather respect the spirit of every space they inhabit.

Their contemporary designs can be seen in indoor furniture such as sofas, bookcases, dining tables and chairs and various outdoor pieces. They also have a whole section of their work dedicated to the office world, catering to reception areas, conference rooms, open spaces, outdoor settings and more.

MILLA & MILLI

BLÅ STATION

The company is a family business located on the southeast coast of Sweden. They are driven by curiosity and continuously search for the unexpected, yet to be discovered. For a product to be considered new, it must demonstrate a different attitude towards shape, function, material or the industrial production process. In their view, a new piece of furniture should be better at something and offer an alternative to what is already available.

OM and Max are some of the latest characters in their line. OM is a chair with a generously slender seat supported by minimal construction. A moulded piece of plywood turns the hind legs into an accommodating backrest. At only 4.5kg, OM is a lightweight chair both for hand and eye. Max is a dressed-up variation of the Maximus chair presented in 2021. It offers soft comfort with moulded foam and an array of colours and textures.

AT EUROLUCE

Artemide showcased a customisable light line and Foscarini presented their innovative solutions. However, our favourite project is from Slamp with the Aria Infinita designed by Zaha Hadid Studio. Slamp have been at the forefront of creating original, eclectic and contemporary lamps since 1994, taking current inspiration from the natural world, architectural and sartorial genius and artistic trends. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Slamp’s collaboration with Hadid Design Studio, the iconic Aria takes on a new form in a modular version. The illuminated system undulates throughout a space with diverse polycarbonate layers that create fluidity. Aria Infinita is a dynamic sculpture that translates Zaha’s signature, composed of sinuous lines and fluid shapes. It is a floating, luminous element that allows light to flow in space, continuously changing shapes. Since the light can be replicated indefinitely, it enables designers and architects to customise the pendant.

The Salone trade fair happens at Fiera Milano Rho grounds, but the whole city of Milan embraces design and happenings around the theme occur around town. Even brands not related to homes embark on this journey with inspiring projects. These are the ones we want to share with you:

LA MANUFACTURE AT CASA MANZONI

La Manufacture is a luxury design brand, and this year, they showcased their contemporary creations at Casa Manzoni – a historical and prestigious residence where the Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni once lived. Immersed in a dream-like and frozen-in-time atmosphere, three new collections by Sebastian Herkner were presented, along with pieces by Neri&Hu, Nendo, Luca Nichetto, Patrick Norguet, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance, Front, Ana Moussinet, and others.

Seven distinct rooms and an outdoor patio were the settings for the three new collections by German designer Sebastian Herkner called: Moss, Gem and Breeze, each united by a reference to nature and its elements. Every product features rounded lines that look as though they are composed of superimposed gems or stones. They support a large dining table or smaller coffee and side tables – the Gem series plays with shapes, sizes and colours, allowing the user to create infinite variations.

MAISON MATISSE

Maison Matisse invited the British designer Faye Toogood to interpret the black ink on white paper drawings from the book Dessins: Thèmes et Variations (1943) by Henri Matisse. The French visual artist shaped many art movements with a joyful optimism, a will to experiment and a quest to balance colour and form. With Maison Matisse, his universe continues to inspire and find new expression in design objects – collaborating with up-and-coming and renowned talents to interpret Matisse’s explorations. The result of the collaboration with Faye Toogood is a collection of furniture for the living room or bedroom that reveals a less wellknown universe of the master and which Maison Matisse wants to bring out, a different perspective from the colourful work we are used to seeing – his black and white drawings. The results are sophisticated pieces with an artsy twist.

The influential fashion house also offers a luxurious home collection. According to the brand, the aesthetics of HERMÈS’ creations are inspired by the authenticity of their shapes and the innate strength of their minimalism.

This year, the stage for the collection displayed a framework composed of iron rods and concrete. Grids and lines created a robust structure for the pieces consisting of unique elements such as blown glass for minimalist lamps, traditional upholstery for a simple, refined chair and virtuoso hand embroidery for rugs with highly graphic motifs. Bronze, glass, wood and leather were showcased in their most primitive manifestations or juxtaposed, highlighting organic materials. The muted colours support the expression of figures central to the house’s heritage. Equestrian celebrations adorn a porcelain breakfast service with cheerful lines, as well as rugs and blankets that burst with an imaginative glamour.

Danish designer Cecilie Manz conceived the Ancelle d’Hermès armchair made with a robust frame in solid wood with a sheet of leather that creates a soft and elegant seat. Heir to a Scandinavian tradition that merges robustness with minimalism, this armchair surprises with the perfection of its sleek design.

Still mesmerised by the scenery, Kato (our friendly waiter for the evening) arrived to explain that the menu is a celebration of the finest ingredients from the French Riviera and an à la minute cooking approach is utilised: each dish is cooked to order and instantly brought to your table to ensure ultimate freshness with the option to share and savour amongst your dining party.

The extensive hors d’oeuvres menu offers a tantalising variety of symbolic dishes perfect for sharing. The first dish to appear was a French classic – Terrine De Foie Gras. The smooth texture ensured it was satisfyingly easy to spread across the accompanying sweet, perfectly toasted brioche. The addition of salt, pepper and balsamic provided a wonderful harmony to the rich, buttery taste of the pâte. Bringing a touch of freshness to the table was a Salade De Chou-Fleur, a delightful concoction of al dente cauliflower varying in colours and textures. The salad was lightly dressed with a flavoursome almond and caraway sauce that left a distinctive aftertaste on the palate and a sprinkling of sweet golden raisins and salty capers added further depth of flavour. The menu boasts an assortment of carpaccio for diners to choose from and Carpaccio De Sériole Du Japon did not disappoint. Delicate slices of yellowtail engulfed by a punchy citrus sauce with sweet undertones sat gracefully on a bed of silky guacamole. The star of the hors d’oeuvres was a dish synonymous with the finest French cuisine: Escargots De Bourgogne. Now, some readers may be slightly cautious about tasting snails, but I encourage you to try something new; there’s a reason snails are considered a delicacy! An alluring aroma signified the arrival of this exquisitely presented dish, and the use of steel tongs makes for an even more memorable experience. Each morsel of snail was surprisingly meaty in texture and smothered in a rich garlic butter that elevated the taste to unforgettable heights. LPM’s desire to source and serve only the highest quality ingredients is evident and the skilful chefs meticulously prepare each course with subtle enhancements to showcase the excellent produce. Two signature dishes that prove this point and are a definite must-try during your visit are the Coquelet Au Citron Confît and Côtelettes D’Agneau Vivienne.

Extremely tender, the juicy fibres of the chicken were flawlessly matched with a flavourful layer of crispy skin. A touch of sweetness and zest along with a delectable depth of flavour are gifted by marinade that coats the spatchcocked chicken.

Grabbing our attention with their stylish plating, the lamb cutlets were generous in size and exceptional in both taste and texture. The expertly rendered, smoky exterior offers a delightfully crispy and salty element to match the succulent lamb flesh marinated in a palate-pleasing blend of honey, lemon zest and thyme. A flavoursome aubergine and pine nut caviar brought a luxurious, silky spread to enhance each delectable cutlet. Partnering with the exceptional main courses, we opted for fresh and crunchy stems of broccolini lightly brushed in olive oil and chilli alongside a creamy potato gratin with a joyously crisp top layer and the subtle sweetness of nutmeg. Bringing our delightful dining experience to an end, we were served two enticing, well-known desserts. First, the quintessentially French Crème Brûlée À La Vanille. Plunging my fork through the thin, caramelised shell resulted in the symbolic and highly satisfying ‘snap’ and revealed a creamy yet refreshingly light vanilla custard. To follow was a refined wedge of vanilla cheesecake with a delicate, crumbly base, partnered with a berry compote that brought a pleasurable sharpness to complement the velvety, rich taste of the cream cheese.

Throughout the evening, an attentive sommelier suggested the ideal accompanying beverages for each course and was yet another example of LPM’s attention to detail.

El Faro, located in the prestige surroundings of Marsa Malaz Kempinski, The Pearl - Doha, offers an immersive experience, taking you on a journey through the vibrant flavours of Hispanic cuisine. This renowned tapas bar is the perfect destination to indulge in an array of tantalising treats meticulously designed to showcase the rich and diverse flavours of the region.

The delicatessen counter is the newest addition to the restaurant, where diners are able to select their own cuts of thinly sliced cured meats and traditional Spanish cheeses to be consumed at one’s own leisure within the restaurant or to take away, this concept captures the essence of authentic Spanish cuisine.

There are options for both indoor and outdoor seating, with the outdoor terrace offering views across the turquoise sea whilst the warm sun gently sets, allowing you to transport your senses and imagine you are dining at an Argentinian seaside resort. And the indoor seating enjoys bright and colourful sights and sounds, reflecting the vibrant culture and spirit of Latin America. The lighting and Spanish music set the scene for the food to follow.

CHIC Eats

The first dish made its entrance in a traditional terracotta pot; inside, a Latin American favourite, ceviche. A small, delicate stack of fresh, white snapper marinated in citrus flavours and crowned with avocado and a sprig of aromatic coriander. A side of crispy plantain chips provided the combination of crunch with the smooth, tasty fish, which made for a light and refreshing starter.

The tapas culture has long been regarded as a communal, family-style way of eating, with small dishes of meats, fish and cheeses shared by friends. Whilst sitting at the oversized carved tree trunk table, we were surprised when the vast spread of tapas offerings took over the space. With each dish that was laid out and the detailed description of the ingredients used, the eyes and taste buds alike were eager to begin enjoying the flavourful savouries. Bowls, baskets and boards adorning the table were filled with so much food, suitable for sharing, dipping and savouring each bite. Two of the standout favourites from the tapas spread were the calamari, with a light, yet crispy batter, coating the tender rings of seafood, and the grilled shishito peppers and raspberry vinaigrette. The surprisingly sweet peppers gave off a mild heat and combined well with the fruitiness of the vinaigrette. The yellow Peruvian chilli dip was a great accompanying dipping sauce for many of the dishes, such as the croquettes. With three varieties available (cheese, short rib and mushroom), there is sure to be one to suit your palate.

For those who favour meat dishes, we tried two tantalising options: the chicken Pintxo and beef Anticuchos, delicious skewers, best enjoyed sizzling hot, with flame-grilled flavours and charred edges, topped with fiery red chillies. The chicken thigh had been selected specifically for this dish as it is regarded to be the most tender cut and was further enhanced by its 24-hour marinating process.

A tapas bar favourite was the true show-stopper, the culinary cousin of the traditional Spanish Paella, the striking Arroz Negro. The black squid ink contrasting with the white of fragrant garlic aioli was further enhanced by the dramatic langoustine, juicy king prawns and shell-on mussels. Desserts were a showcase of Latin American classics, served as a trio of cheesecake, churros and Tres Leche cake, each with its own varied flavours and textures. No Latin feast would be complete without the sugary, cinnamon goodness of a bowl of churros. The bitesize doughnutshaped treats were cooked to perfection, with a golden crispy exterior and a light, fluffy interior, just the right size for dunking into a velvety bowl of rich chocolate sauce. The Tres Leche or ‘three milk cake’ was both rich and creamy, topped with a fluffy, swirled meringue. Giving the baked cheesecake an elevated, Spanish twist was the freshly grated Manchego cheese (straight from the deli counter), lovingly sprinkled on top. This gave a great combination of sweet and savoury.

The bright and vibrant flavours of the dishes, paired with the friendliness of the staff, made for a truly adventurous journey through a range of classics.

WORTH THE WAIT: THE ALL-NEW BMW XM

AFTER FOUR-AND-A-HALF DECADES, BMW HAS FINALLY RELEASED A NEW BMW M ORIGINAL IN THE FORM OF THE LATEST XM.

BMW M GmbH have released their much anticipated, allnew BMW XM. This is the brand's first BMW M original since the BMW M1, unveiled in the late '70s, and their first ever high-performance car with an electrified drive system. OHLALA spent an unforgettable day in this novel creation for a regional test drive.

EXTERIOR

The moment we laid eyes on the new XM, we were taken by its bold shape and unique design elements.

At the front, the large kidney grille features horizontal slats surrounded by an ambient lighting feature and gold trim. This visually expressive front end houses two headlight units, typical of BMW's luxury segment models. Hinting at the sporty prowess of the vehicle are large air intakes located at each side of the front bumper.

The distinctive lines of the XM continue at the flanks, underscored by the gold trim running from bonnet to boot, a feature that pays tribute to the original M1. We loved the shape of the competition-style sideview mirrors, along with the M-specific wheels that come complete with weighted centrepieces. This ensures the BMW logos remain the right way up, even when the car is in motion.

DIVA Drives

At the rear, the vertically stacked dual exhaust system is neatly integrated into the rear apron. The LED taillights include a three-gill lighting feature and flicker like a fire when on. Finishing off the exterior in style are the prominent diffuser, adaptive dampers, limited-slip rear differential and the now familiar gold trimming.

INTERIOR

Entering the XM, we were welcomed by comfortable and supportive multi-adjustable sports seats with illuminated XM embossed logos on the headrests. The interior's exceptional blend of luxury and sportiness is combined with a solid build quality and houses a driverorientated cockpit.

The interior roof features a prism-style design that lights up when the car is opened, as does the ambient lighting located under the interior door handles, the various air vents and the front speakers of the Harman Kardon surround sound system. All lighting turns red when the Sport mode is engaged. A sports steering wheel with carbon fibre panels, aluminium pedals and M-trim seat belts are all included in the cabin. The rear offers plenty of head, shoulder and leg room for three adults to travel comfortably, with plenty of storage options, numerous USB ports and dual-zone climate control.

DIVA Drives

The 527-litre storage capacity of the luggage compartment can be greatly increased with the rear seats folded down, making the XM practical for everyday family usage. This area also features a 12V socket, along with a designer bag holding the hybrid charging cables.

INFOTAINMENT & TECHNOLOGY

The BMW XM is equipped with BMW Live Cockpit Professional, delivering the M-specific multi-sensory vehicle experience, iDrive. This system operates through a large BMW Curved Display consisting of a 12.3-inch information display (diagonal) and a 14.9-inch control display. We found this easy-to-navigate operating system very responsive and exceptionally helpful in negotiating the numerous options. A state-ofthe-art Head-Up display, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are also fitted as standard.

PERFORMANCE & SAFETY

Press the start button on the new XM, and a distinct sound composed by the critically acclaimed Hans Zimmer (composer and music producer) is what you'll hear. He had a hand in creating the soundtrack for this outstanding SUV.

The XM's engine is a classically high-revving 4.4-litre V8 with cuttingedge M TwinPower Turbo technology. Combined with an electric motor and an eight-speed automatic gearbox with torque convertor, this effective combination offers three operating modes and a full-time, four-wheel drive experience.

A few years ago, the furniture store IKEA released its Life at Home Report showing that the traditional housing concept had evolved. The study came up with five core emotional needs to create the feeling of home: privacy, comfort, ownership, security and belonging. Meaning that you might need all five to transform your bricks-and-mortar construction into a loving, livable space. However, the latest report from 2022 showed that two new emotional needs had been added to the five core ones: enjoyment

and accomplishment. According to them, the first one comes with the sense that our refuges should give us mental and physical space to enjoy fun activities and follow our passions. In terms of accomplishment, during the pandemic, a lot of activities were done in our nests. We embraced successful activities such as work and study but also hosted unforgettable dinner parties and finished complex jigsaws. Our homes became something even more relevant in our lives. They became spaces with a greater sense of purpose.
