I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 3:14

I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

– PHILIPPIANS 3:14

ompetitive sports have likely been around since the beginning. The Olympic games are believed to have started in Greece over 2,700 years ago and evidence of sports competitions have been found in virtually every culture on the planet. The biblical authors made frequent analogies between sports and the Christian life in their writings. This was likely due to their audience’s familiarity with, and fondness for, sports. In Philippians 3:14, Paul emphasizes progress in Christian living and how we are to press forward daily with our eyes on the finish line of heaven. In 1 Corinthians, he stresses that unlike athletes who discipline their bodies and compete zealously for a perishable prize, we run our race for an eternal one. We at Faith Radio want to help you as you run your race. Through our Biblesaturated programming and Christ-focused worship music, we aim to be a source of encouragement and growth and to help you stay focused on Christ, the author and perfecter of our faith.

CHIPLEY, FLORIDA I love listening to the various programs. Our job as a Christian is to spread the word of God. Faith Radio is doing this. ANDALUSIA, ALABAMA I thank the Father for each one of you because you cause me to draw close to Jesus and hear the Holy Spirit! DOTHAN, ALABAMA I am 72 and for the past 8 months, I am recovering from a major back surgery and spinal damage and not able to go anywhere. Your radio programs have been my only fellowship.

MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA We want to thank you for your faithfulness in bringing your inspiring devotionals each month. We appreciate you for bringing joy to our hearts here at our assisted living facility! ENTERPRISE, ALABAMA Thank you for what you do for the faith based community and for the outstanding programs you broadcast.

PROGRAMMER “QUOTES” “Don’t worry about the score, the medal, the prize; don’t worry about the other guy; just concentrate on doing your best. Just focus on running the race before you, looking unto the best Life-Coach in the world, the Lord Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith.” - David Jeremiah “The best leaders are following Christ. That’s the best leader you can follow.” - Tony Dungy “Freedom does not mean there are no rules. Without sidelines and foul lines, a football game or tennis match or baseball game would be nothing but chaos. The only thing that makes the game work is that there are restrictions. Freedom never means you are free to do whatever you want. That’s license. Freedom means that God has liberated us to fulfill the purposes for which He saved us. He has freed us up to become what He redeemed us to become.” - Tony Evans

As we embark upon our 20th year of the Faith Radio Golf Tournament, we give God the glory for the many exciting benefits we have seen from this event for our ministry. Where will the 20th Annual Golf Tournament be held? We have enjoyed many venues throughout the River Region, and this year our tournament returns to Wynlakes Golf and Country Club in Montgomery. The golf course had some major renovations last year with brand new bunkers and better quality sand to make their course tour material. How many participants are involved? Nearly 200 people with our players and volunteers! Many of our golfers travel from beyond the River Region and represent our coverage areas of Dothan, Andalusia, and Auburn to enjoy the competition. Can novice golfers take part? Our format of a 4-man scramble allows many of our golfers who play once or twice a year to surround themselves with experienced golfers and have a competitive team. What can golfers expect? In addition to a great day of golf, each golfer receives a shirt and bag of valuable goodies. We put together bags that are filled with spiritual tools that help grow their faith, life and family. We have a delicious continental breakfast, lunch, and end of the day snack meal. Throughout the day, we have Conecuh sausage cooking out on the course, and our beverage carts are loaded down with Blue Bell ice cream! During the awards ceremony, we have many door prizes to give away, including 6 vacation trips. It is a great day of fun, food, and fellowship! What can sponsors expect to receive? Sponsors greatly appreciate our tee box signage, website and on-air recognition. Our corporate sponsors have shared with us how they receive accolades from their customers and clients as they hear Faith Radio share about how their business is supporting our ministry. What does the Golf Tournament provide for Faith Radio? It costs over $2,300 per day to operate our network of stations. This event usually nets around 20 days of financial fuel for our ministry and allows us to continue our 24/7 broadcast of God’s love and messages of truth.

Faith Radio was heavily involved in numerous events involving our National Day of Prayer. In Montgomery, Billy Irvin emceed the prayer breakfast and is backstage with Baxter Morris, Ken Austin, Twinkle Cavanaugh, and Todd Strange. For many months, our ministry has helped lead the way with encouraging our listeners to participate in praying for our communities. In Montgomery, monthly walks are held as citizens, pastors, and community leaders walk and pray for God’s blessings and protection.

Singer-songwriter, Josh Gilbert, blessed many with a great concert at Family Faith Night and also enjoyed a moment with the team mascot during the baseball game!

We always enjoy bringing coverage of student athletes that exemplify Christ in our High Schools. Bob interviewed Isabelle Cochran and Trey Lindsey, this year’s winners of the YMCA Jimmy Hitchcock Award.

We are privileged to have many opportunities throughout the year to minister with Pastor Ken Austin and recently had a few extra minutes to check out the basketball court at his ministry, Mercy House!

Impacting Our Community for Christ Through Sports By Billy Irvin, Director of Ministry Relations

T

here is little in American life that excites, energizes, and unites people like sports. Whether it’s the youngest t-baller, the multi-million dollar professional, or the couch-sitting fan, people pursue sports with a passion and zeal that is almost unmatched. But sports can be more than just an idle pastime – it can be strategically used as a platform for ministry and as a bridge that builds relationships and breaks down barriers to provide gospel opportunities. Faith Radio has partnered with numerous individuals and groups who are ministering through sports both on-air and in our communities. Centered around the excitement of a new football season, our support of

Gridiron Kick-off is an annual tradition in Montgomery. Each year, fans of different teams gather in a wonderful church setting and enjoy barbeque and testimonies of famous football leaders who strongly rely

on their faith in Jesus and encourage others to do the same. The FCA does an outstanding job of helping students to form and lead small huddle groups in their schools. Each October, they bring these small huddle groups from across town to worship together and share their faith. Our involvement in the Upward Basketball program provides our staff an opportunity to share the love of Christ with the parents and grandparents of the children playing basketball. At half-time, the players leave the court, and we are given time to share from the Bible a word of encouragement, pray with parents, and invite them to tune in to Faith Radio. 8

Faith Radio’s Ministry Magazine - August-October 2019

A great national sporting event in our state is the NASCAR race in Talladega, which occurs twice each year. We are greatly amazed at the many different levels of ministry providing the love of Christ to over 100,000 people during the weekend. From the race car drivers and crews to the race fans and track

Summertime baseball provides a great opportunity for our ministry to sponsor Family Faith Night, which includes a concert, baseball game, and fireworks. We invest in providing the baseball fans with an uplifting concert from a Faith Radio artist who encourages attendees to worship. We have opportunities during the event to share about our ministry work with new listeners and church groups that attend the game. personnel, we have seen and shared about Alabama Raceway Ministries and other organizations who invest their resources for the Kingdom building opportunities from this sport. Additionally, we participated in offering the invocation over national television that reaches millions of fans watching and praying with us. These are just some of the ways Faith Radio is partnering with others to minister in our communities through sports. Countless lives have been touched as the gospel has been shared and biblical encouragement has been spread through these interactions. Look for ways you can minister through sports in your community!

PROGRAMMER SPOTLIGHT FAITH RADIO PROGRAMMERS CONNECT THROUGH SPORTS Throughout the broadcast week, Faith Radio presents a number of programs that illustrate the connection of sports to faith, and quite a few of our programmers have a personal connection to sports. Each Saturday morning at 11:00 on Faith Radio, you can hear Unpackin’ It, featuring host Bryce Johnson. The program features interviews from sports figures, as well as Bryce’s insightful commentary. Unpackin’ It Ministries, which Bryce co-founded, features the radio program, as well as podcasts and weekday devotionals. Earlier on Saturdays, at 8:00 a.m., Gerry Caillouet explores the connection between outdoor activities, such as hunting and fishing, with the Christian faith on God’s Great Outdoors. The show features testimonials from people involved in outdoor ministry. Caillouet’s ministry helps to encourage Christians to use sporting activities as a means to share about Christ. A well-known voice from the world of sports heard regularly on Faith Radio is Tony Dungy, former Super Bowl-winning coach with the Indianapolis Colts and current studio commentator for NBC Sports. He and his wife Lauren are heard on Uncommon Moments, and they share personal stories and inspiring comments on the daily feature, heard during FaithSongs, weekday mornings around 10:10. There are numerous other programmers who are connected to sports. For years, Tony Evans was chaplain for the Dallas Cowboys and Mavericks; his son Jonathan now serves with both teams in a chaplain role. FamilyLife Today co-host Dave Wilson is a former chaplain for the Detroit Lions, and his wife, Ann, has ministered to wives of professional athletes (Dave is a Ball State University Hall of Fame Quarterback). These are just a few examples of how some Faith Radio programmers are using sports as a platform for ministry. Whether leveraging through their notoriety as an athlete or coach, or through a sportfocused ministry, they are able to connect with people who might not otherwise be open to hearing the gospel. 10

The Meeting House A Source of Music and Conversation with a Higher Purpose by Bob Crittenden, host of The Meeting House The Meeting House is a program that explores the connection of our Christian faith to a variety of areas of life. Sports is certainly an arena (pun intended) in which the Christian message can be expressed. Looking back at the guest list for the program, you will see how faith impacts the world of sports. This includes interviews from special events, such as the International Christian Retail Show (ICRS) and the National Religious Broadcasters Convention (NRB). ICRS guests have included: former major league baseball star Darryl At the International Christian Retail Strawberry, who is now in ministry work, NFL Hall of Show in Atlanta, Major League Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, and Olympic gold medalist Baseball great Darryl Strawberry gymnast Shawn Johnson. There were also NRB and and wife, Tracy, discussed God’s work UNITE conversations with Tom Thompson, the oldest in their lives and marriage. player (at age 61) to play in and to score a point in a college football game. Miles McPherson, former NFL football player and pastor of The Rock Church and Academy in San Diego, stopped by at NRB. He discussed his book on race relations, The Third Option. Members of the Faith Radio team have “checked in” to The Meeting House with various sports figures, including two-time national championship football coach Dabo Swinney from Clemson, who has been a featured speaker for Landmark Former NFL player, now pastor, Church’s Gridiron Miles McPherson. Kick-off. We have also spoken with Super Bowl-winning quarterback Trent Dilfer and former college greats Bobby Humphrey (Alabama) and Ronnie Brown (Auburn). The Meeting House has also featured coverage of events sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, including Clemson Head Football Coach Dabo the annual Christmas prayer breakfast and Fields of Faith. Content from The Meeting House is available not only Swinney visited with Faith Radio’s Jeremy Smith and Russell Dean at through the Faith Radio website and app, but through other apps as well, including Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, the Gridiron Kick-off at Montgomery’s Landmark Church. iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, and TuneIn.

October is Pastor Appreciation Month -

Does Your Pastor Need Time for a Getaway? Pastors and their families experience many blessings through life in ministry, but there are challenges that are present, as well. The tremendous responsibilities of ministry, including delivering God’s Word and being “on call” 24/7, can weigh on the mental, emotional, physical, and relational well-being of a pastor and his family. While we should pray and care for our pastors year-round, October has been set aside as a special month to focus on expressing appreciation for pastors and staff. Perhaps it’s time for a congregation to consider sending a pastor or staff member on a refreshing getaway. October, when we celebrate Pastor and Staff Appreciation Month, can be a time to schedule some much-needed R&R. During OctobeR&R, Energize Ministries can assist in providing such an opportunity. At the website, EnergizeMinistries.com, you can find information about scheduling a retreat for a pastor or perhaps a church staff at the Energize Lodge and Retreat Center, located in southern Virginia. The Energize website also has a map of other ministries that offer accommodations for retreats or vacations for those in ministry. It is a great resource to bless those who sacrifice much to bless us.

by Billy Irvin, Director of Ministry Relations

It takes a remarkable investment for the owners of sporting venues to keep their technology and playing fields in tip top shape for competitive and safe play. When fans come to the game, they expect to experience an exciting game and a well kept venue. People invest a lot of time and money in sports, yet often, we can’t remember who won a championship just 5 years ago! At Faith Radio, we are teaching and sharing the everlasting truths of God’s Word. His love endures forever! Making a Kingdom investment now is like storing up treasures in heaven. We are reminded in Psalm 90:12, “Teach us to realize the brevity of life, so that we may grow in wisdom.” Thank you for making a wise investment in Kingdom purposes that will long outlive the best sporting moments you can remember. An investment in Faith Radio helps share the truth of God’s Word to a culture looking for an answer to the ultimate crown.
