J.JValaya

‘Czar of Indian Couture’. 14 JAN. / FEB. 2014

JJ Valaya is a part of the pioneering group of Indian fashion designers; the ones who started it all for modern India. He is a founding member on the Board of Governors of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), and was the first official brand ambassador for Crystal giant, Swarovski. The ‘House of Valaya’ was founded in 1992 by brothers TJ Singh and JJ Valaya with the launch of its couture label, JJ Valaya. The brand today encompasses Couture, Ready-to-wear and Home. A larger than life approach to Luxury, Fashion & Lifestyle has been a hallmark of this maverick Maharaja; it is indeed the marriage of the uniqueness of craft with the energy and the ever-changing nature of fashion that sets the pace at Valaya. JJ Valaya believes that true style is meant for those capable of embracing both, the bold and the elegant. It is this edgy classicism and sophistication that eventually defines the distinct Valaya signature. Today, he continues his tirade as one of India’s leading fashion gurus and as co-founder of one of its most respected luxury fashion and lifestyle houses, a journey that has earned him the title of the ‘Czar of Indian Couture’. The ‘House of Valaya’ has now introduced a luxury lifestyle and home décor brand ‘The Home of the Traveler’ and will soon introduce ‘Valaya Home’.

Collection

J Valaya Couture collection depicts a grand conglomeration of royals at a reception to welcome the Maharaja and his daughter, the princess, from their adventures in Spain. The Maharaja, in turn, a devoted believer of India and its wonders, and now also fascinated by all things Spanish is keen to showcase his newfound inspirations. In an endeavor to take the audience through his exalted experiences, this collection projects a medley of Spanish and Indian influences, both visually as well as through a specially created soundtrack by Gaurav Raina of Medieval Pundits. However, rather than dwell upon the rather obvious visual connects of Spain, the collection delves into seemingly contradictory juxtapositions

to come out with a unique collection of the some of the finest couture statements of the season. Section 1. Spanish frescoes (with an almost renaissance like resonance) combined with the unrivalled beauty of Indian Miniature art are the inspiration for a collection in blues. Section 2. Imbued with the soul of Spain, Huge fringed shawls, known as “Mantón de Manila” remain a Spanish tradition and almost always depict flowers in varied hues and sizes. In harmony with the beauty of the Indian Jamawar, a unique collection takes birth in deep aubergines, reds and Turquoises in rich silks and jacquards. Section 3. Inspired by the laces found in Spanish fans and headgears, and

combined with the elegant grandeur of Indian jewels, this collection in corals showcases a sinuous blend of the tailored with the flow. Section 4. A collection inspired by battle…by the armors of Spain and India, a collection that plays with modern shapes and forms using metallic transfers and fine metal embroideries. Velvets, Tulles and georgettes hold court in lush burgundies and Reds. Section 5. The final collection stands inspired by perhaps what Spain is best associated with; the bullfighters, also known as the Toreros, and commonly as matadors. Their flamboyant costumes find an unusual representation in the unique forms of embroidered skirts worn with metallic appliquéd jackets. JAN. / FEB. 2014 15

inesh Ramsay has made a name for himself by establishing himself as the only Bollywood Fashion Designer available in Toronto who can custom design for his clients. Born in Mumbai to a designer mother and director/producer father, Dinesh Ramsay grew up in the Bollywood starlight. He started off in 1998 helping his mom Mrs. Kavita Ramsay, not realizing that in doing so he started enjoying the work so much that he was asked to comment on each and every ladies outfits tried by his mom’s clients. Being the only man around, the ladies enjoyed hearing what Dinesh thought about the designs. Slowly Dinesh tried his hands on designing by himself and before he knew it, he had become a designer in his own right after studying fashion at the Clares Fashion College in Mumbai. Overtime, Dinesh has become a sought after designer in international markets. He has worked with many film stars and various Bollywood movies. His collection has been showcased at shows like Tyra Banks and was currently assigned to design the awards dress for the wife of the Oscar winner Mychael Danna. JAN / FEB. 2014 25

Historically, henna was used for cosmetic purposes in the Roman Empire, Convivencia-period Iberia and Ancient Egypt, as well as other parts of North Africa, the Horn of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, the Near East and South Asia. It was also popular among women in 19th-century Europe. Today, bridal henna nights remain an important tradition in many of these areas. A South Asian bride is not complete without henna. It is said that the darker henna color represents a groom’s love for his bride. Euphoria offers a huge variety of henna designs and styles. Choose the design that you love and let the experts customize it for you. Book their henna services for any event be it big or small and you won’t be disappointed.

T

he luxurious M. Asam® VINOLIFT® skin care range gives new luster to mature and dry skin. The rich formulations with an innovative complex from grape stem cells (G-Cell) transport the precious antioxidants from the grape directly into the skin and act as an effective guard against all sorts of free radicals. The OPC comes from Swiss Pinot Noir grape seeds and is stabilized into a liposomal emulsion. Additionally the VINOLIFT® products contain Resveratrol, an ingredient that activates sirtuin, the so-called “power of youth”. By means of a high-tech encapsulation method the active ingredients

are made available to the skin over a longer period of time and thereby nurture and nourish the skin. The innovative VINOLIFT® complex contains grapestem cells, encapsulated resveratrol and encapsulated OPC. The grape stem cells are cultivated in a time-consuming procedure in the lab. Grape stem cells act as highly effective antioxidants due to their high amount of polyphenols. Since the stem cells are preserved as a whole, they are an ideal carrier system to better penetrate the skin. Resveratrol is a powerful, natural antioxidant and is known for its “power of youth”. The encapsulated technology supports better absorption into the skin. Cold-pressed grape seed oil is produced in a time-consuming and gentle process by means of the family owned technology. The VINOLIFT® line combines numerous plant extracts, lipids, peptides and vitamins that intensely care for your skin.

nited by a common commitment to innovation and excellence, Swarovski and Marcolin present their new Spring/ Summer 2014 Eyewear Sun Collection. Infused with a strong fashion sense, this new collection offers a wide array of shapes and colors to perfectly complete any look. “Eyewear really became more fashionable lately and it was exciting to conceive a collection in line with our jewelry collection, exploring shades which are unusual for sunglasses and elements of design which exemplify Swarovski’s codes.” said Swarovski’s Creative Director Nathalie Colin. Swarovski’s brand DNA shines through each and every design. Crystal subtly brings its sparkling touch to the collection, be it through refined pavé, graphic baguettes or expert faceting. The Spring/Summer 2014 collection features elements of the 1960’s spirit with thick temple shapes and a cat eye silhouette. “Diva” plays on a two-toned design available in eye-catching black and gold, or soft nude pink and black. With a similar shape and two-toned style, “Divine” features Swarovski’s iconic crystal faceting, and “Davina” dares with a lacquered red and lace-like temple embellishment. “Da-Yu” goes for a sharper and edgier interpretation of the cat eye silhouette in stunning turquoise - a shade which also stars in Swarovski’s Spring/Summer 2014 jewelry collection. More roundish but still playing with two color tones, “Demi” features a true splash of summer shades with purple and fuchsia.

Glamorous round-shaped styles flatter the multi-faceted woman and are perfect for any occasion. Super elegant “Dolce” has a retro feel with a joyful yellow frame beautified by triangular crystal stones on marbled Havana temples. The oval and animal-print “Darling” design features a leopard motif with crystal application, giving it a feline twist and echoes the tribal influence to be seen in the Spring/ Summer 2014 jewelry collection. “Destiny” has a more classic tortoise shell print. With oversized and eye-catching crystal studs illuminating both the frame and temples, “Dana” and “Dalia” evoke true Hollywood glamour. Elegant and flattering rectangle shapes are also part of the collection. Using Swarovski’s Pointiage® technique, “Delight” is adorned with crystal application to create a rich caviarlike textured effect. A delicate Swarovski pearl nicely contrasts the frame for a sophisticated and classy look. The oversized, “Dasha” clearly references Swarovski’s jewelry with faceted crystals bringing additional light to its white frame. With its wide frame and crystal pavé embellished temples, “Djulia” and “Donna” both exude softness and femininity. In black and gold, “Djulia”’ echoes Art Deco chic, whereas the red color option is more daring. The striking metal frame of “Donna” is softened by luxurious gold tones. The Spring/Summer 2014 Eyewear Sun Collection re-interprets highly recognizable Swarovski’s designs, extends the color palette with more both classic and fashionable shades, and injects newness into the entire range.

“Divine” – Frame adorned by faceted injected material which is a the material worked to reproduce the facets of the crystal structure. Shiny black front and white temples, graduated light smoke lenses, crystal.

An Eye-opening Experience.

54 JAN. / FEB. 2014

aughter of a journalist and engineer, Atlanta native Shilpa Narayan has never shied away from a challenge. Daily balancing her full-time finance job and her music has not deterred this 24-year-old songstress from pursuing her passion and baring her soul in her music. Her passion and interest in music started at a young age, however she never pursued singing until about 5 years ago when she bought a guitar. She then started posting youtube videos, and after receiving hundreds of thousands of hits, began working on her original music. Releasing her 1st album “Stand Alone in the Summer of 2012, the album depicts her personal struggle with romantic relationships as well as the inner turmoil of identifying her true self. In just a

literally break free of their colourless world and into a world of color after overthrowing a repressive sheriff. Shilpa sings, “So call me a deserter, discard me like a traitor, I don’t follow convention but isn’t that the point now, I am my own dictator.” As a way of empowering women, Shilpa leads this revolution of pursuing personal truths. She is excited to put out more music and get back to the writing and recording process. She’s been lucky enough to receive strong support from her friends and family, and says this has really helped her to continue pursuing her passion, regardless of the adversities she faces in the industry. Even with her initial success, Shilpa realizes she still has a long road ahead. “I don’t think I knew going in, how difficult it would be and how eye-opening of an experience it would be,” recalls Shilpa about her first experiences with the music industry. “It really forces you to grow up and also become comfortable with who you are and the life decisions you make. This album and my music in generalreflects a lot about that inner struggle I’ve had, and I’m hoping others will relate to it.”

short two-year period, Shilpa has progressed quickly on her road to self-discovery through pursuing her true passion: music. While studying business and marketing at Georgia Tech, Shilpa picked up the guitar in her spare time and taught herself to strum chords to accompany herself singing cover songs by Rihanna, Beyonce, and various other R&B artists she revered. She began posting videos of herself singing on YouTube, and gradually, her views increased to well over 500,000. After moving to New York City to work as a business analyst, Shilpa continued to quietly practice her music and post more videos on YouTube. She competed and won an open mic contest at Don Hills, which landed her a small management deal who then introduced her to various producers and musicians in NYC

Shilpa so far has opened up for several rappers including Waka Flaka, Wale, Culture Shock and also performed at the Apollo, Times Square Diwali, NY Fashion Week, clubs around NYC/ Atlanta and more. She’s been featured by The Voice's Carson Daly, Vibe Magazine (Artist to Watch), AOL Music, ArtistDirect, Urban Asian, All Voices, Channel One News, and many more and has almost 1 million hits on her youtube channel and associated videos to date. Her new music video for her single, “Renegade” was premiered on 12/10 exclusively by MySpace and is the first single off of her new album that she plans to release in early 2014. Set in the Mojave Desert with breathtaking views, the upbeat and progressive song channels an innate rebellion that lives in all of us. In the video, Shilpa and her cohorts

Pour remaining warm semisweet chocolate fudge mixture over white fudge, smooth with spatula and immediately sprinkle 1/4 cup white morsels over this fudge mixture, refrigerate for at least 3 hours before removing from foil and cutting into squares. If the remaining warm semisweet chocolate fudge mixture is thick, just microwave it for a few seconds to make it smooth. Enjoy it with hot tea.

Chocolate Nut Squares

1 store bought sugar cookie dough (Pillsbury) Some semi-sweet chocolate chips Some white chocolate chips Some chopped nuts. I used almonds and walnuts.

Spread the dough in a cookie sheet and bake at 350F degree oven for about 25 minutes. Meanwhile, microwave the nuts until you get the aroma, make sure not to burn them. It would hardly take a minute. Add a spoonful of milk over the semi-sweet chocolate and microwave it until it melts. If you do not want to do this, you can always buy bottled chocolate sauce/syrup and spread it. When the cookie is baked, remove and spread the chocolate sauce on top, sprinkle some nuts. Similarly melt the white chocolate also and drizzle it using a whisk over these nuts. Cut into squares, let it cool. Enjoy these easy chocolaty, nutty bars. Seek your little one’s help in spreading the chocolate or sprinkling the nuts. They will have fun. TIP: If you are allergic to nuts, use coconut or any other sprinkle on top of the chocolate. NOTE: 1. If you don’t find cookie dough in your local stores, just google search for “Eggless cookie dough” and you get tons of easy recipes. 2. Another conventional way of melting chocolate is to boil water in a saucepan, keep another bowl on top, pour semi-sweet chocolate and let it melt. Make sure that water does not touch the bowl but only the steam is needed to melt the chocolate.

“If you are in a mood for something sweet yet don’t want elaborate recipes to follow, here are some easy recipes for you. When I think of the most sinful thing to eat in this world it’s none other than Chocolate that comes to my mind. The pleasure of eating chocolate cannot be replaced by any other dessert. Of course, one needs to watch out for the content of chocolate as it not only contains cocoa solids but also cocoa butter and sugar so as to make it melt in our mouth. It is produced from the seeds of the cacao tree which after roasting and several other processing becomes chocolate or cocoa. This final product is so additive that we are it’s slaves in some form or the other. I have tried to use the most optimal balance of flavor and texture of chocolate so that we all do not feel too guilty or break those New Year resolutions.” – Priya Kothari

Chocolate Cups Makes 8 – 10 chocolate cups 1 dark chocolate/regular bar or chips 1 white chocolate bar or chips Paper or Aluminum muffin cups

Easy

Tiramisu 1/4 espresso, strongly brewed or you can use regular coffee 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream Sugar as per taste 1 tsp vanilla extract 8 oz mascarpone cheese at room temperature 1 pack ladyfingers Cocoa powder for garnish

Whip cream with sugar and vanilla until soft peaks form. Gently fold cream with mascarpone. Dip a ladyfinger in the espresso and layer the bottom of any dish. I used aspringform pan for easy removal of tiramisu. Spread with some filling. Repeat with remaining ladyfingers by dipping in espresso & spreading with filling.Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for a good 8 -10 hours before serving. Just before serving dust some cocoa powder by passing it through a fine mesh sieve.

Boil water in a saucepan. Place a vessel on top of the pan such that the vessel sits well. Pour in some white chocolate chips and stir until it melts. Now use a brush and apply a thick coating of white melted chocolate to the inside of the muffin cup in some random fashion. In the meanwhile, melt the regular chocolate. This could either be done in a microwave or the same method as white chocolate. Apply thick coating of this chocolate to the inside of the same muffin cup in which the white chocolate is applied. Place it in a muffin tray or some small vessel and refrigerate it for at least 2- 3 hours. After that, slowly peel off the muffin paper and your designer white and dark chocolate cups are ready. Scoop some chocolate ice-cream, shave some more chocolate on top.You can also add a couple of chocolate wafer rolls for more chocolate.

Marie Biscuit Magic 1 Marie Biscuit packet (12 nos) 4 – 5 tbsp of unsalted butter 1 tbsp Cocoa powder Sugar as per taste 1 tbsp Instant coffee powder A couple of tbsp of milk

Mix the coffee powder and a little sugar in the milk to make a slightly loose paste. Dip each biscuit into this mixture so that each biscuit has a

decent coating and stack one on top of the other. Blend butter, some sugar as per taste for sweetness and cocoa powder. Apply this mixture evenly on all four sides of the stacked biscuits. Cover it with an aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Then cut in an angle so that the coffee mixture lines in between the biscuits are seen as shown in the image. Serve as is or with a scoop of Vanilla ice-cream. I bet this will be a crowd pleaser in your next party. Enjoy.

They send clients to a number of hidden and overlooked destinations where wildlife, history, culture and opportunities for multi-sport activities abound – without the usual crowds. Mike Nesbitt, a native of South Africa, and daughter Julia bring an intimate knowledge of wildlife migrations, climate variables and cultural opportunities to the African Safari Company that he founded in 1998. vast, open space with star-filled skies, a quiet so loud it thrums with life, and unexpected adventures with horseback and cycling safaris, walks in the wild and visits to archaeological and San rock art sites. There are just two camps to choose from in this open wilderness: the luxury of Mashatu Main Camp or the rustic appeal of Mashatu Tent Camp. This destination is easily included in South African and Northern Botswana safari itineraries. For an example of a Botswana safari see: www.africansafarico.com/safari/conservation- safari. South Africa’s Tswalu Kalahari Private Game Reserve on the semi-arid Northern Cape is the country’s largest private game reserve and it’s also the most exclusive, with only 30 guests at a time to discover what may well be South Africa’s last great wilderness. This region has diverse cultures of frontier history and brave missionaries and boasts countless challenges for adrenaline junkies, hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders and 4x4 adventurers. Explosive displays of wild flowers occur from late July to November and are fantastic when viewed by hot air balloon. Walks to ancient archaeological sites reveal rock carvings created by the Bushmen up to 380,000 years ago. The diversity of habitat (and climate) has resulted in an extremely diverse animal population – a surprise to many given the

perception of the desolate Kalahari. The Motse is the only lodge on the reserve with just eight suites; however small groups have the opportunity to stay at the Oppenheimer family’s personal home, Tarkuni. Tswalu combines perfectly with any other luxury destination in Southern Africa and is accessed by private place from Johannesburg or Cape Town. Western Tanzania’s Katavi National Park is the heart of a large and rich wildlife area so remote that only about 300 foreign visitors experience it annually. The immense floodplains are host to wide variety of mammals and birds while the crisscrossing seasonal rivers become crammed with hippos and crocodiles as the water recedes in the dry season. This is perfect walking territory and is best explored on a safari which includes fly camping under the African stars. ASC’s favorite camp is Chada Katavi with just six

East African safari tents on the edge of the Chada Plain. Katavi is accessed by light air on twice weekly scheduled flights and is best combined with other East African destinations. For Tanzania safari ideas visit www.africansafarico.com/ destination/tanzania-safari/ Tanzania’s Sadaani National Park combines bush with beach and then some at this little-known park in the center of the historic triangle of Bagamoyo, Pangani and Zanzibar. Besides many species of fish, Green turtles, Humpback whales (nyangumi) and dolphins (pomboo) also occur in the ocean, just steps from Saadani Safari Lodge. Activities include game drives, river safaris, walking, beach picnics, birding, snorkeling and visits to the local villages. Saadani is accessed by light air from Dares Salaam and combines well with any East Africa safari. It has 13 clear spring-fed rivers lined with palms and riverine forest and home to basking hippo. This is lion and elephant country, but also Meru has many rare species including caracal, the beautiful Lesser Kudu, aardwolf, and over 400 species of birds. The park also has an 84-square-mile rhino sanctuary housing over 60 black and white rhino. The area is so large that finding the rhino can still be a game driving challenge. The park is best accessed by light aircraft. Elsa’s Kopje is the place to stay, nestled into the hillside and overlooking vast plains. n absolute concentration of power and urban chic, this latest addition to the Clifton collection by Baume & Mercier, is a self-winding chronograph, and reveals its full potential when confronted with the trials of everyday life. Its understated, dynamic design is an expression of the strength of character of the person wearing it. Baume & Mercier, founded in 1830, has always strived for perfection. Throughout its long history, the company has forged an image of timeless elegance, of refinement underlying consistent balance. CLIFTON 10129 This chronograph has an undeniably traditional character, featuring a sun satinfinished silver dial to contrast with its golden hands and golden digits. The effect is further accentuated by a full grain brown alligator skin strap with large square scales, fastened by a triple folding buckle with safety catch. The most precious and undoubtedly the most «vintage» of the collection, this 43 mm steel watch contains a self-winding caliber known for its sturdiness. It will be the obvious choice for aficionados in search of a precise timepiece that age cannot alter.

CLIFTON 10130 With its 43 mm steel case liberally inspired by a 1950s model, this chronograph plays on a tastefully sporty note, with a flexible steel strap made up of fine steel links. It will fulfill urbanites in search of a distinctly masculine timepiece or those living in humid regions. Water-resistant in five atmospheres, this efficient watch contains a Swiss-made, selfwinding mechanical movement (ETA 7750) known for its durability. CAMEL BLAZER: “It’s great when you can take a traditional piece and give it a twist. Wear it together with a denim shirt and a pair of casual slacks, playing with formality and informality.”

Men’swear Pick of the Season

PIN-STRIPED SUIT: “Pin-stripes look so fresh right now, especially when adding something new. We put red in the stripes of the dark navy bottoms to shake up the style. The suit is so bold, it’s best worn with a crisp white poplin shirt.”

The new season means a wardrobe update for men. Head menswear designer Andreas Löwenstam tells us how to wear them for great personal style.

BIKER JACKET: “The biker jacket is one of the season’s must-haves, especially when it’s in new fabrics. This biker is in boiled wool, and has the most amazing texture. Wear it together with a classic white T-shirt and jeans, or with a textured sweater and flannel trousers.”

CROPPED JACKET: “The neat shape of this jacket makes it so easy to wear. It gives a smart look with a whole new attitude, and can be worn with a shirt, sweater, trousers and a patterned scarf.”

UTILITY JACKET: “Functionality is always key in menswear, which is why the utility jacket is so strong this autumn. This one has a coated surface, multiple pockets and a detachable inner jacket, and looks just right worn with a striped sweater and cord slacks.”

he launch of the new BMW M3 Sedan and new BMW M4 Coupe sees BMW M GmbH revealing a new interpretation of the high-performance sports car – and carrying the BMW M philosophy over into the fifth generation of the M3. More than 40,000 examples of the fourth-generation BMW M3 Coupe were built, and now the BMW M4 Coupe is poised to continue this success story. The “M4” badge is a reference to the model series that provides the basis for the new M model – and, for the first time, the Coupe will be introduced at the same time as the four-door variant. Logic dictates the latter will be christened the BMW M3 Sedan. “Four generations of the BMW M3 have blended motor sport genes and uncompromised everyday usability within an emotionally rich overall concept,” explains Dr Friedrich Nitschke, President BMW M GmbH. “The BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe represent an ongoing commitment to this

the engine also achieves a reduction in fuel consumption and emissions of around 25 per cent. Both the BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe cover the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h / 62 mph in 4.1 seconds

(with the optional seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission). In the interests of maximising dynamic ability and ensuring excellent efficiency, weight savings of around 80 kilograms have been achieved over a comparably equipped predecessor model. The BMW M4 Coupe, for example, has a DIN kerb weight of 1,497 kilograms, thanks to the rigorous application of intelligent lightweight design measures. These include the increased use of lightweight materials such as carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and aluminium for a number of chassis and body components. Indeed, both models feature a carbon roof.

One of the primary objectives in the development of the BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe was to ensure the new cars offered impressive race track capability. Hence the presence of a track-specification cooling system, which ensures that the optimum temperature balance for the engine, turbochargers and transmission is maintained at all times. In order to accentuate the racing character of the two models in terms of both their technical composition and the fine-tuning of the cars, the engineers worked closely with BMW Motorsport’s professional racing drivers during the development phase. For example, DTM drivers Bruno Spengler and Timo Glock took part in the extensive testing and set-up work carried out at the NuĚˆrburgringNordschleife circuit.
