PROFILE

Sushma Kilachand “I was surrounded by beauty, so it was hard not to be inspired.”

36 JAN. / FEB. 2013

PROFILE

The collaboration between jewellery and fashion is a glorious celebration, and the Dagmar label bears proof of such a successful partnership.

She left Mumbai in 2003 and kept in touch with the fashion scene through her production team. Operating from a small studio in Toronto, Kilachand designed her collection, teaming Indian embroidery and fabrics - silk, chiffon, linen and georgette in bright shades of pink, orange, purple and turquoise - with western styling to produce a versatile line of tunics, ponchos and Indian suits that she describes as Indo-western. She brought her sense of esthetics and clothing line to Toronto in 2004 and has a successful business of clothing, handbags, bridalwear and Dagmar jewellery.

38 JAN. / FEB. 2013

The House of Dagmar - Jewellery Couture Dagmar Jewellery is an exclusive collection of semi-precious designer jewellery including custom design and bridal, at affordable prices. Designed in Mumbai with a contemporary yet vintage-infused flare, each piece is handcrafted using 22K gold plating and stones such as rubies, sapphires, turquoise, fresh water pearls and onyx. Dagmar jewellery is adorned by celebrities around the world and is available at independent and fashion forward retailers throughout Canada and the U.S. Dagmar’s showroom is located in Toronto, Canada at 183 Parkmount Road, Toronto, Ontario. The jewellery is also widely sold through other store fronts and shopping channels. Kilachand heads a network of independent sales agents for Dagmar Jewelry in North America. These representatives sell the jewellery through fund raisers, launch parties for celebrities, parties at home etc. “Everything is one of a

kind, and there is always something for everybody,” Kilachand wears a lot of the creations herself. “Indians grow up with jewellery. It is in our blood”, Kilachand says points out. In fact, the country has the highest consumption of gold in the world. Fashionable & Affordable Dagmar is marketed mainly to the upper middle class. She describes the Dagmar woman as one who is fashionable enjoys dressing well, appreciates interesting conversations, is not obsessed about the way she looks but at the same time wants that one special piece to make her feel like a million bucks. Kilachand states that she has always wanted to target this kind of woman because she is the one who does not have enough variety in selecting jewellery within her price range. “We offer the look of Bulgari and Tiffany’s, but at affordable pricing, and with Indian workmanship,” Kilachand explains. “I’ve always wanted a woman to

give back to countries and people that need it. Not to do so is shameful.” Dagmar donates 15 per cent of all its proceeds to charity. Many of its beneficiaries are charities that work in South Asia, primarily with children. “These are charities that I believe in and have an emotional connection to”, Kilachand says. They include Children’s Hope, the Trillium Health Care Community Hospital, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of North America, the Children’s Aid Society, Mount Sinai Children’s Hospital and Seva, a charity that effectively works with homeless women in Indian villages. They also organise fund raisers throughout the year. She is now committed to bringing contemporary Indian art to Canada. She is currently working closely with Waddington’s, Canada’s only auction house, and their new gallery space, Concrete Contemporary.

Social Consciousness “There has to be some level of social consciousness in everything you do, or you shouldn’t be doing anything to begin with,” Kilachand says, “You need to

be so enamoured of a piece that she has chosen that she is compelled to ask where it is from. It makes me really proud to say it is from India.” Using cheaper materials, like semiprecious stones instead of diamonds and rubies, helps bring down the price of a piece. Her favourite is their recent Nizam of Hyderabad Collection. “We took images of his personal collections and made them into affordable pieces that everyone can wear. We used crystals or naturally-occurring stones, which keeps the prices down.”

Rich Indian Culture Kilachand travels to India regularly to procure South Asian art and market it in Canada. “It is important to market Indian culture that is not part of Bollywood”, she says. “There is so much richness in our country that I feel that it is my moral obligation to educate my fellow Canadians about India.” Kilachand believes that the South Asian immigrant population is much more mature than it used to be, “The previous generation was stuck in a time warp believing that India today was the same India that they had left behind. People like us, the younger generation of Canada, have traveled back enough to know that India is more than just Bollywood. We are confident that Canadians will be receptive to the variety it has to offer.” JAN. / FEB. 2013 39

t 21 years of age, Kiran is an excellent example of a dedicated, creative and an upcoming artist. She is a self-taught Henna Artist, who at the age of 12 was already undertaking close family bridals. She is a gifted Illustrator besides being a law student at The University of Sheffield. Academically she has always excelled and achieved straight A’s at school and college. Furthermore, she worked as an Illustrator for the S1 Magazine, of which various drawings done by Kiran were published, “ I am inspired by almost anything and everything, I like to be creative.” “The walls in every room of my home are plastered with my hand painted canvases.” My greatest achievement I would say would be my own Henna business which I started from the age of 12. Working alongside bridal clients and for big events, I have developed an extensive portfolio of my work. I have worked alongside renowned photographers, makeup artists and models. I decided to extend my business further by selling personalised henna and art ornaments. I am currently in the process of starting my own clothing T shirt line.

Farah Mrs. Pakistan World 2012

54 JAN. / FEB. 2013

D

o not accept the status quo, and, wherever you are and whatever your circumstances, do not give up the fight…” Farah Mahmood, Mrs. Pakistan World 2012 Despite having had a very privileged upbringing and a pampered life, Farah Mahmood stayed grounded, and always was ready to learn and excel, both personally and professionally. In Dubai, she got into health, fitness, nutrition and self-improvement in a big way. She worked as an interior designer, and managed some major hotel design projects for local companies in Dubai. Mother of two boys and two girls, Farah decided to move to Canada with her husband, to focus more on her children’s education. In Toronto, Farah went on to become a certified personal trainer and a qualified image consultant. She also became an expert in anti-ageing and nutrition. She is in the planning stages of opening an image and fitness studio for women in Toronto. After winning the title of Mrs. Pakistan World 2012 Farah says, “ I feel it is an

the step of empowering women to great effect, and Pakistan loses out while women’s literacy and education rates are so low – in effect, the Pakistani women are only half as successful as they could do if half of the people are not contributing positively to our development. So my advice would be, do not accept the status quo, and, wherever you are and whatever your circumstances, do not give up the fight for improvement. If every woman improves her situation by a little, that is collectively a whole lot of improving!” “I am not arrogant enough to say that I or a pageant can single-handedly change the plight of Pakistani women. However, any publicity that goes to create a sense of empowerment and a sense of ambition in women is positive as far as I am concerned.” “At the same time, I believe it is challenge to not be seen as someone who flies in the face of our values - I have some ideas as to how I can try to shift perceptions in my own way. There is an element of anxiety as it means a lot to me to be able to achieve my goal in that area. I would like to give Pakistan its own “pageant identity” through my representation of our country.” Whenever she is asked about her ideal role model, Farah says, “Being an advocate of individuality, I don’t have any individual role model. I believe there are many people who have admirable qualities that one should seek to replicate. For instance, I admire Benazir for her determination, Malala for her courage and Maria B for her love of Pakistan and her charitable endeavours – and her artistic ability of course! I also take inspiration from Pakistani women in Pakistan, who fight on a daily basis against poverty, starvation, oppression and narrow-mindedness, and yet still manage to educate their children, provide support to their families and progress in their own lives – their husbands would be nowhere without them, and they are my true heroes.”

Mahmood honor, and it gives me a wonderful opportunity to communicate what I feel defines the mature Pakistani woman of today, whilst trying my best to remove some of the stigma attached to such titles.” Farah says, “My whole family has been extremely supportive. From my husband, who has always encouraged me to follow my dreams, through my kids and my siblings, everyone feels this is something that I should do and do to a high standard. There is a sense that I was always destined to do something like this, as I have always enjoyed the opportunity to get exposure and communicate myself to the outside world. “I have an image in mind that I would like to project, and at the same time, I hope to be a positive role model for other Pakistani women. I want to show that you can be in this kind of business, and yet be a thinking person who is modest, decent and hardworking, behaves in a dignified fashion and does not compromise many of the traditions that makes our country what it is.” Farah stresses that women can be a collective force to be reckoned with in the world. “Many Islamic countries have taken

fter holding multi-titles, Miss Priyanka Gianchandani currently models with various companies. She freelances from time-to-time, but she is presently represented by Wilhelmina Models. Priyanka loves to model, dance and act. She started dancing at the age of 3 and has been trained in various dance forms. Currently she is an Assitant Dance Teacher at AUM Dance Creations. Priyanka has been acting since the age of 10, and she was formly trained by Barbizon School of Acting and has performed as an extra in many movies, short films and music videos. Later, in the aspiration of becoming a Bollywood Actress, her parents enrolled her into Barbizon School of Modeling, due to her lack of confidence during her puberty years. Within two weeks, she was hired to work with Barbizon Modeling Agency and she was represented as a petite runway and print model for 7 years until October 2011. In 2008, Priyanka was awarded Miss Barbizon, as she is a successful petite runway and print model in her industry. She started freelancing for six months, until April 2012, when she was offered to be represented by MMG-Model Management Group and Wilhelmina Models. Since April she is represented by Wilhelmina. Priyanka also enjoys pagentry.

She started participating in pageants at the age of 20, because since the age of 14, she wanted to participate in pageants, but because of her braces, she felt restricted. Thus, at the age of 20, she started pageantry and she won two titles: Miss India International 2011 First Runner-up and Miss Beautiful Eyes 2011. She currently still holds the Miss Beautiful Eyes title and is always willing to make any appearances as a judge, host, VIP Guest/Cheif Guest, interviewee, motivational

speaker, etc. In February 2012, she went back to Barbizon School and had a 6-month training in Model and Pagent Coaching. She graduated in August 2012, and currently freelances as a Model and Pageant Coach. Although, these are her hobbies, Priyanka has a part-time work as an Exercise Scientist, conducts research with professors, volunteers at the hospital, works in the Emergency Room with several physicians, and is training to become an Emergency Medical Technician (while volunteering at the First Aid and Rescue Squad), in order to gain clinical experience for Medical School, because Priyanka aspires to become a future Physician. Originally she wanted to become an actress, but she fell in love with the Medical field and wanted to focus on bettering healthcare. However, she believes that a person should not forget their dreams and should always strive to achieve them. She currently gives motivational talks to the community, both South Asian and Multi-culutral and especially to young girls, so that families understand that modeling (including pageantry), acting and dancing are not to be frowned upon, so if their daughters or other girls aspire to get involved in these fields, they should encourage them. Priyanka loves meeting people and would love to give advice to anyone who needs it. Priyanka wishes that each and every person see the inner beauty in everyone.

MALLA MALL Vikas Kohli has written the music for the feature documentary MallaMall, by award-winning director Lalita Krishna. The film tackles how the affluent middle-class in India have created demand for superstores that threaten the small entrepreneurs of traditional bazaars and corner stores. “We used the music in MallaMall to reflect where we are chronologically and geographically in the film. Perceptive viewers will hear South Indian flavours in shots of the Bangalore farmers market and Punjabi flavours in shots of Dehli; And the music evolves with the influx of western corporations,” comments Kohli who also points out “Unusual for documentaries, I wrote the background score as well as several songs. This included an original Bollywood song, a song created from an ancient Sanskrit prayer, and creating a modern arrangement of a devotional Bhajan.” MallaMall has so far screened at the Calgary International Film Festival, Vancouver South Asian Film Festival, and FILMI Toronto's South Asian Film Festival. Mashed Coconut Yams with Cardamom “This is one of my favorite holiday side dishes. My mom always made candied yams for the holidays, which were loaded with sugar and butter and oh so good, but this dish is much healthier and just as tasty. I love the creaminess of yams when you mash them up. It’s like eating candy!” 4 SERVINGS Ingredients: 3 large garnet yams 1 cup full-fat canned coconut milk ½ teaspoon cardamom ½ teaspoon salt

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Scrub the skins of the yams and dry. Poke multiple holes in the yams with a fork and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for about 30 minutes or until they are soft all the way through. Remove from the oven. Let them cool slightly and then carefully remove the skin and scoop the flesh out into a bowl. Add the coconut milk, cardamom, and salt, and mash them together using a fork or spoon. Serve immediately.

DENTIST

Bone Disease and its effects on the Jaw Dr. Neha Sood MD in collaboration with Dr. Ramit Joshi DDS

O

steonecrosis of the jaw is a severe and rare bone disease that is another tie that brings medicine and dentistry together and is a relatively new disease to both medical and dental literature. As the population is aging, more and more people are developing osteoporosis and take bisphosphonates for treatment which is prescribed by their physician. Osteoporosis is a disease of the bone which is characterized by low bone mass and causes deterioration in architecture of the bone tissue and causing increase in bone fragility. The disease itself has no symptoms. But it leads to increased risk of bone fractures which is the most dangerous reality of the disease. The fractures can happen in the vertebral column, hip, rib and wrist. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry DEXA scan is considered the gold standard for diagnosis of osteoporosis. At age 65, routine screening for osteonecrosis by bone mineral density measurements via DEXA scan is recommended in all female patients. Currently in men, screening is only recommended for those who are at an increased risk of developing osteoporosis. Approximately 8 million women and 2 million men in the US have osteoporosis. Even though there are slight variations in treatment recommendations, most of the treatment with bisphosphonates is recommended for 3-5 years. Bisphosphonates related osteonecrosis of the jaw is a condition in which bones of the maxillofacial skeleton become necrotic, die and are exposed to the oral cavity. Bisphosphonates affect the turnover of the

90 JAN. / FEB. 2013

bone and also inhibit how the bone repairs. They can be given orally and intravenously to the patients. Usually patients are taking them for 4-5 years before they develop osteonecrosis. The necrosis happens exclusively in the jaw as it’s an area of high bone turnover because of daily bone remodeling around the periodontal ligaments. Even though the risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw is small with bisphosphonates, physicians should advise their patients of this small risk and also should advise them to have a dental exam either prior to or shortly after starting treatment. Risk factors for the disease include long-term steroid treatment, alcohol abuse, joint injuries and having certain diseases such as arthritis and cancer.

Head and Neck Cancer, as challenging of a disease it is, the treatment is not any easier either and often requires radiation therapy or chemotherapy. The initial effects of such therapy can be dryness to the oral mucosa called Xerostomia but osteoradionecrosis is also another complication of the radiation

Dental Medicine Post Doctoral Program therapy. Osteoradionecrosis which in layman terms is radiation damage to the bone that result in death of the bone. The upper and lower jaw bone has end arterial blood supply which is only oxygenated blood hence the importance; if these arteries are occluded the blood supply is completely cut off. Usually due to radiation exposure at the local site other factors such as periodontal gum disease, tooth infections, biopsy, dental extractions, denture irritations can cause delayed healing and may develop into osteoradionecrosis. Symptoms are similar for both of these conditions and majority of patients usually present with pain, swelling, cellulitis etc. Physical exam findings include jaw bone exposure, fistula formation and signs of clinical infection. However, in osteoradionecrosis, due to the radiation exposure there is missing hair follicles, surface texture changes, and color changes that assist clinicians in assessment of the area of radiation injury. In both cases, most patients respond well, though slowly, to conservative treatments for both the control of pain and long-term oral antibiotic therapy. In cases that do not respond well to antibiotic therapy, local debridement, or the removal of the infected bone, is an option in more severe cases. Hyperbaric treatments raise tissue oxygen levels which can affect the healing process and give greater infection control. More advanced cases usually require surgical intervention. Generally patients will not require alterations in routine dental treatment, it is important as always to visit your dentist every 6 months for an exam and cleaning especially if undergoing treatment with bisphosphonates and to prevent dental infections due to tooth decay or periodontal disease.
