Warm Weather and long days make Summer the best time to enjoy all the festivities happening around town. With the wedding season in full bloom many of us dream of dressing in fashions that command admiration. Most of us have good fashion sense when we see it on others, but take a back seat when it comes to ourselves. It tends to be low self-esteem and self confidence that keeps us from looking the best. In this case, why not visit Dream Couture Fashion Studio, where designer Shabana Ashfaq doubles as your stylist and fashion guide to get you through the hurdles. With all the events happening around town - International Fashion Festival 2012 being one of them, Desi Fashion gives you a special feature highlighting one of their Star Performers, Hamza Farouqi and one of their fashion designers Sarita Jain showcasing her Ethnic Line Paridhaan. Many more strong artists and talents including International Pop Star Farahri are featured in this issue, so go ahead and check their features out. Tomatoes are in season and we love to plant at least one tomato plant in our backyard or balcony every summer. This summer Priya Kothari, our food expert, gives us a few delicious and easy to make dishes with this fresh main ingredient. Finally for this special summer issue Desi Fashion team has brought in several summer stories to get you going from fun accessories to travel destinations like Montreal.

Enjoy and have a good long Summer. I

always had a passion for fashion and designing. After studying fashion designing from South Delhi Fashion Institute, I now have 16 years of experience in the retail industry, where I have worked with the top fashion catalogues of Europe and North America, but my passion was still in designing ethnic Indian wear and to pursue my dreams. With my husband’s support, we started manufacturing our designer collection in New Delhi / India and after successfully catering to the Indian market for few years, we launched our collection in North America under our label called Paridhaan…” “At Paridhaan, we don’t just design clothes, we design your dreams. We strongly believe that clothes should be the extension of one’s intellect and to portray that we create an exclusive collection of traditional Indian wear, casual wear, evening wear, bridal wear and formal evening gowns, specially designed to bring out the eternal

beauty of today’s women. We create glamorous ensembles which are a blend of contemporary sensibilities and traditions of excellence. We blend bold colours and prints with sheer laces, embroideries, pearls and beads to accentuate the modern and ethnic charm. We take pride in our endeavor to strike a balance by creating chic styles that not only accentuate the desires of modern women but also signify their traditional image.

This collection is a fusion of simplicity, royalty, richness and charisma. It is a representation of modern day woman who is proud of her culture and tradition and loves to wear Indian ensembles in her own contemporary style. It is a mixture of bold and bright colours like – red, orange, yellow, fuchsia and green in form of solids and prints blended with rich embroideries in gold, silver and pearls to add the most required bling… Sarita Jain will be showcasing her collection in the International Fashion Festival 2012, Toronto, Canada on July 7th 2012 at the International Center, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. ajé Shwari asks the world if they are ready to join her on her quest to bring South Asian culture to the mainstream forefront with the long-awaited release of her single, cleverly titled “Ready For Me,” on BollyHood Records. Known as the self-proclaimed Queen of BollyHood, Rajé is previously recognized for her work with Timbaland as featured on the record “Indian Flute,” along with collaborations with the likes of Jay-Z (The Blueprint 2, ‘The Bounce’) and Pharell (Charlie’s Angels, ‘The Flyest’). Now, Rajé is taking her music to the next level and beginning this new chapter by releasing “Ready For Me” as a free download encouraging everyone to join the BollyHood Records movement and follow her to where no South Asian artist has gone before. Rajé Shwari has been absent on the scene working on her music, her look, her brand meanwhile enriching her vision; she is sure to be worth the wait. She and her Atlanta production team seamlessly combine elements of Urban and Bhangra music and package them for a broader audience. Just as the record label’s name suggests, BollyHood Records is a platform for Rajé to bring the best of the cultural East over to the modern day West. “It’s taken me almost five years not only to build my sound and create the kind of music that I really wanted to make, but in the process I became passionate about launching my own record label, which I hadn’t anticipated. The attention to detail and devising a longterm plan really became my priority, so I took my time and thought things through. It’s funny because what mattered to me most after the ups & downs and successes & failures, was when I had the audience’s attention again, I wanted to deliver beyond their expectations, and even my own.” Rajé says that this single is just the beginning! She plans on releasing at least two more singles for free. Not one to harp on getting 99 cents for a download, Rajé

Shwari is initially hoping to gain the love and respect of music listeners as she ushers in this movement with BollyHood Records. It is your turn to get involved: download “Ready For Me” for free here.

subject and follow it. Without a clear path to follow, you may find yourself filling the room with clashing colors and designs, ending up with a disastrous motley room.

ennifer Agus is the principal and creative energy behind Agus Interiors. The design firm handles mainly residential projects, overseeing the plans from start to finish. The inherent appreciation and understanding of design, style and space can be seen in all of her designs. For nearly seven years, Jennifer Agus has dressed residences and vacation homes in New York City, Long Island, The Hamptons, Connecticut, and New Jersey. In 2010, Jennifer was invited to display her original designs at a Showhouse in New York City, teaming up with some of the world’s most prominent fashion designers and interior designers. In Long Island, she created a Chanukah room for the Holiday Showhouse at the historic Orchard Hill mansion.

1. Find a starting point and an inspiration! Most people think of this as only a magazine clipping of a room you like, but it can be as basic as your child's favorite color, an outfit your child loves to wear, or a room from a TV show (i.e. iCarly). Choose an inspirational

3. Make it easy by shopping online. Major retailers like Pottery Barn Kids and PB Teen Jonathan Adler, and Restoration Hardware’s Mother and Child have great websites at fair prices. Rare and funky items can be found on websites such as UrbanOutfitters.com. Online shopping is

Tips on designing a Child’s Room Jennifer Agus besides being an interior designer in New York City is a mom of a picky 4-year old herself, she offers up these five tips when designing your child’s room:

2. Stay away from themes. Do it with accents. If your kid adores Hello Kitty or is a Spiderman fan, get the character pillow, a frame, poster, or bedding. Parents know better than anyone that kids grow up incredibly fast, and their taste changes almost as frequently as their height. Use accents that can easily be eliminated or replaced, this prevents having to redecorate every year once his taste changes from cartoons to cars, or she goes from animation to animal prints.

not only convenient, but also economically beneficial. Comparing prices is quick and easy online. Google Shopping find exactly what you want and organizes the results from lowest to highest prices and vice versa. 4. Allow the child to have a voice. Keep the child involved throughout the process by asking if they like a particular set-up and involve them in the shopping. This will allow them to take pride in their room and want to keep it nice, It’s a win for both parent and child. If your kid’s opinion is annexed out, you run the risk of creating an atmosphere they don’t like. 5. Lastly, allow for storage, storage and more storage! Parents are generally so consumed by the aesthetic that they don’t take into consideration how much storage space children need, especially as they get older and their clothes get bigger. Purchase items that can grow with them such as a bench at the foot of the bed. Also, build lots of cubbies in the closet. Instead of a media unit, consider a dresser with many drawers that surface can double as a TV stand. JULY / AUGUST 2012 75

figured it would just be a Parisian New York or vice versa. Naïve as I was, I didn’t realize that I was in for a spirited, bold and complex mix of contrasts that completely defies comparison. Sure, Montréal’s renowned duality of Old World charm infused with North American energy lies at its very heart; however, I discovered that it is the plurality of cultures that really makes this metropolis tick. A shutterbug’s dream, you could snap away at warp speed and capture a new story with every click. It doesn’t matter where you go on the island; every neighbourhood is different and everyone stars in their own Oscar-worthy screenplay. Montréal is as romantically traditional as it is cutting-edge innovative, as cosmopolitan dynamic as it is small-town friendly. Yet despite this diversity, an underlying

Montréal homogeneity exists in this vibrant population who collectively and confidently “live and let live”– and do it well. Take Saint-Denis Street for example. On the first warm day of spring, Montréalers flock to the outdoor terraces en masse to celebrate winter’s departure and lift their

Or downtown during the holidays, where rosy-cheeked shoppers stop to listen to Cyrille the Spoonman as he merrily click-clacks away in front of Ogilvy’s department store. Life is just one, big festival. Jazz, comedy, fireworks, film, tango, fringe theatre, fine cuisine... Montréal has a festival for almost anything you can think of. There’s always something going on and the party is open to all.

European charm meets North American vibe. Think Europe without the Euro! Montréal offers Old-World flair mixed with New-World energy, 17th century colonial architecture sharing the same skyline with sleek high-rises, plus an eclectic blend of cultural influences from all over the world.

And don't forget the 5 a.m. breakfast to keep you going!

4 7 2 5 8 3 6 9 Diet is a four-letter word. When it comes to food, Montréal is the city of indulgence. With more restaurants per capita than anywhere else in North America - everything from gourmet fast food to culinary feasts - resisting temptation simply futile...and foolish! We were green before green was cool. With 620 miles of bike paths, a great water playground called the St. Lawrence River, 1,000 parks, 12 golf courses within 20 minutes of downtown and a mountain right in the middle of the city, Montréal is the ideal city to enjoy the great outdoors.

I’s a beautiful day in our neighbourhoods. From historic Old Montreal to the trendy Plateau to family-friendly HoMa, charming Little Italy and a safe, always happening downtown core, there's lots to explore and lots of ways to get up close and personal with the locals, all within safe walking distance.

We never close. Happy hour at 5? Concert at 8? Dinner at 11? Follow it up with casino night, or maybe a live music venue, cool lounge, hot club, trendy after-hours party - or all of the above.

Creative shopping. From famous upscale brands to trendy local designers, Montréal is a treasure trove of fashion, antiques, home décor, jewellery, trinkets and original gifts. From downtown chic to neighbourhood niche, you'll find it all.

Lingering is encouraged. Grab a seat on an outdoor terrace or a trendy wine bar. Order a café au lait or Sauvignon Blanc. Watch the beautiful people go by. Chat up your neighbour. Order desert. Chat up your other neighbour. Repeat as desired. We know how to entertain. Anytime is showtime in Montréal. On any given night, you can have your pick of modern or classical dance, opera, symphony, theatre, circus, rock concerts, cabaret, jazz...

The Marwari or Malani is a rare breed of horse from the Marwar (or Jodhpur) region of India. Known for its inwardturning ear tips, it comes in all equine colours, although pinto patterns tend to be the most popular with buyers and breeders. It is known for its hardiness, and is quite similar to the Kathiawari, another Indian breed from the Kathiawar region southwest of Marwar. Many breed members exhibit a natural ambling gait. The Marwari are descended from native Indian ponies crossed with Arabian horses, possibly with some Mongolian influence. The Rathores, traditional rulers of the Marwar region of western India, were the first to breed the Marwari. Beginning in the 12th century, they espoused strict breeding that promoted purity and hardiness. Used throughout history as a cavalry horse by the people of the Marwar region, the Marwari

was noted for its loyalty and bravery in battle. The breed deteriorated in the 1930s, when poor management practices resulted in a reduction of the breeding stock, but today has regained some of its popularity. The Marwari averages between 15 and 16 hands (60 and 64 inches, 152 and 163 cm) high. Horses originating in different parts of India tend to be of different heights, with the breed having an outside range of 14 to 17 hands (56 to 68 inches, 142 to 173 cm) high. They can be bay, grey, chestnut, palomino, piebald, or skewbald. Although white horses are bred specifically for religious

use in India, they are generally not accepted into Marwari stud books. Gray horses are considered auspicious, and tend to be the most valuable, with piebald and skewbald horses the secondmost favoured. Black horses are considered unlucky, as the colour is a symbol of death and darkness. Horses that have the white markings of a blaze and four white socks are considered lucky. The head and neck of a dark brown horse. The horse‘s ears curve in toward each others, and the tips meet. Inward-curving ears are a characteristic breed trait The facial profile is straight, and the ears are pointed with inward turning tips. The neck is slender, running into pronounced withers, a deep chest, and fairly straight shoulders. Marwaris generally have a long back and sloping croup. The legs tend to be slender and the hooves small but well-formed.

DENTIST

Its not all about the By Dr. Ramit Joshi

A

common complain patients come to their dentist with is their subjective assessment that they suffer from bad breath. This is also called Halitosis, it can cause a lot of embarrassment and is especially nerve wrecking to the people around who can smell the foul odor. Patients think their bad breath maybe a sign that they have cavities only and some people may not even be aware of this condition affecting them until they are told by their dentist. How does this transpire? Once food is eaten it is digested and absorbed into the blood stream this is carried to the lungs which then expels the air, the odor is usually from the food contents expelled during expiration. Frequent and infrequent eating both can also contribute to odor from the oral cavity. The teeth also form part of the process as they contain grooves, fissures, pits which can accumulate food remnants including in-between the contacts of the teeth, The trapped food particles attract bacteria and cause rotting away of the food remnants, the whitish thin layer of plaque that sticks to the teeth within minutes after eating can all be contributory factors. There can be more reasons for bad breath from the mouth and we will briefly touch on them as well in this article. Strong foods that are containing onions, garlic and tobacco products are very well known causes of strong unique odor. We also cannot rule out underlying medical conditions which a person can suffer from such as chronic sinusitis, respiratory problems, chronic bronchitis, diabetes, gastrointestinal, liver or kidney diseases. Diabetes and kidney or liver failure can lead to a fishy smell.

92 JULY / AUGUST 2012

Uncontrolled diabetes can also cause a fruity breath odor from chemicals called ketones. Chronic reflux of stomach acids (gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD) has been associated with bad breath, if a patient suffers from continuous foul odor and they are following the regime advised by their dentist a visit to their general physician may be necessary to rule out other potential possibilities. Some medications can also cause bad breath especially in patients with existing dry mouth (xerostomia), when the flow of saliva is affected and there is not adequate cleansing of the teeth and the mouth, this dryness will result in an odor. Dry mouth may be caused by various medications as well, salivary gland problems or due to mouth breathing, Mouth breathers also cause the mouth to constantly dry up which limits the protection that salivary offers and promotes bacterial growth in plaque and tartar build up, one should talk to their doctor about their medications and possible causes of dryness if you feel you suffer daily. The 6 month checkups will allow your dentist to detect early problems before they spread such as periodontal (gum) disease as the bacteria produce toxins in the mouth, which irritate the gums. If gum disease continues untreated, it can damage the bone and gums, Patients who wear retainers or dentures are especially more susceptible to the effects of bacterial accumulation and they will need to make sure their appliance is also cleaned daily to prevent it from holding remnants of food and the brushing of dentures daily is also advised. Ways to manage this condition is by doing the basic dental care which

includes daily flossing, brushing, tongue cleaning with a tooth brush or a tongue cleaner and using an antimicrobial mouthwash which will provide a healthy fresh oral environment. Using sugar-free gum or sugar-free breath mints can help you keep breath fresh and drinking plenty of water will keep the mouth moist and cleansed. The outlook for fresh breath is usually excellent if you stick to your dentist’s or physician’s treatment plan.

Mini Kato Ingredients:

Versatile Tomato Chutney Ingredients: Tomatoes – 10 -15 or more Red chilli powder as per taste Salt as per taste Oil 2 tbsp Rye or Rai – 1 - 2 tsp Methi seeds – 1 tsp Kari leaves – a few Hing – a pinch Directions:

Purée the Tomatoes well in a blender. No need to strain anything, everything is edible. Heat oil in a tall, thick bottom vessel. I use an indalium cooker which is similar in looks

to aluminum. Add Rye, Hing, Kari leaves, Methi and let the aroma’s infuse. Then pour the purée. Be careful as the purée might splash a little bit. Mix it and let it boil well for about 20 -30 minutes on a medium flame. Just make sure to mix it from time to time and not to burn it. You will see that the puree starts to thicken and thicken. The images below show how it started to thicken after 15 minutes and then later on after 25 ~ 30 minutes. Once it has thickened a good amount, add salt, chili powder to taste. Let it cook further until you see oil separating. That’s it, it’s that simple. Let it cool and store it in the refrigerator and use it on everything.

Tostito’s scoops Any kind of legume you may like. I used sprouted Hara Chana Sprouted Mung Bean (optional) Tomatoes Chopped into small pieces. Onion finely chopped Aloo (Potato) boiled and cut into small pieces Red Chili Powder as per taste Salt per taste Dhania (Cilantro) finely chopped Finely Chopped Green Chili (optional) Chaat Masala. Cherry Tomatoes with Herbs Ingredients: Approx. 25 Cherry Tomatoes 2 -3 cloves of Garlic finely crushed 1 small Onion finely chopped 1 tsp of dry Basil 1 tsp Oregano 1 tsp Dill 1 tsp Parsley 1 tsp Red Chili Powder or per taste (optional) 1 tsp freshly Ground Black Pepper 1 tbsp Olive Oil Salt to taste Directions:

the Tomato. Remove from water and run cool water over the Tomatoes. In the meantime, heat Olive Oil in a skillet, add the Garlic and Onion and sauté. Add Red Chili powder, Herbs, Salt and Pepper. I used all dry herbs, make sure to crush the herbs to release it’s aroma. Add about 1/4 cup water to the mixture, turn of the stove. This makes the sauce. When the Tomatoes are cool, gently peel the skin of each Tomato. The juices might run out a little but don’t worry, you can collect it & use it in the herb mixture. Place the peeled Tomatoes in a clean plate and pour the herb mixture on top and you are done. Garnish with fresh Basil if needed.

ri Chaat Pav Bhaji Ingredients: 6 medium size Potatoes 1 large & 1 medium size Onion chopped 3 – 4 cloves of Garlic minced 1/4 – 1/2 head of Cabbage 1/4 – 1/2 head of Cauliflower 1 medium size Green Bell Pepper (capsicum) chopped 1/4 – 1/2 cup Peas 2 Carrots 2 – 3 Tomatoes chopped A couple of Lime or Lemon wedges Salt to taste Pav Bhaji Masala (I prefer Badshah Brand’s taste). You can also get it from Amazon or Indian stores. 1/2 stick Butter (Unsalted preferred) or 2 tbsp ghee 1 Packet of Pav or Bread Cilantro for garnish Directions:

one of the three is a must as it makes the chaat not feel dry while eating. Enjoy your chaat. NOTE: Please adjust the number of Onions, Tomatoes and other ingredients to as many number of people. It’s hard to measure how many pieces each person might like to eat since it is a bite size food.

Wash the vegetables. Cut the Potatoes, Cauliflower, Cabbage and Carrots into large pieces and pressure cook them until they are soft enough to be mashed. In the large vessel, add some oil (or Butter or Ghee if you prefer). Add the Garlic and Onions and saute. Now add the Tomatoes and saute well. Add the Pav Bhaji Masala

and saute for just a few more seconds before adding the mashed vegetables. Add Salt and mix well. Taste it and adjust it by adding more Pav Bhaji Masala. In the end add the chopped Bell Pepper and Peas. If you are adding fresh Peas, add it right after the Onions. Squeeze some Lime Juice. You can also top it with off some Butter or Ghee. Heat a pan, add Butter or Ghee and toast the pav for a few seconds until they turn golden brown. Flip and do the same. Serve the Bhaji hot with chopped Onions, Cilantro and a squeeze of Lime Juice on top of the Bhaji with the Pav.

365 Days of Pure Vegetarian Cooking with Compassion Priya Kothari, a food lover has been blogging for a while now on her favorite subject Food. She says ‘ I must admit that my real inspiration for cooking came from none other than the queen of Everyday Italian, Giada De Laurentiis. Thanks to her enthusiasm for cooking that has dug my hidden passion into something worthwhile. I will also add that my husband has a passion for food which merely goes to his upbringing; yes, my Mother-in-Law is an amazing cook and hence he has an inclination towards food cooked in a way which makes his taste buds jump in triumph! And last but not least, how can I forget my dear Mom who has always been a source of inspiration in creating simple yet very satisfying meals day in and day out. I hope to carry on the simplicity of preparing food from her and pass it on to my family and friends!’
