T

oday after 22 years I still love my work and enjoy fashion immensely. I have always been supported and backed by my parents and my passion for design has helped me achieve whatever I have achieved till now. For a successful career one should be self motivated and have full confidence in themselves even if it means breaking the norms. I have learned a lot and evolved tremendously as a designer and even more as a person. Today I have come a full circle and know what I should do and more specifically what not to do.” Ritu Beri’s name is synonymous with the explosive globalization of India’s fashion industry. A pioneer in her field, Ritu has been often called India’s Fashion Queen. More than two decades ago, she was the first designer to storm the catwalks of Paris with her unique label that combined the exquisite sensibilities of Indian design with global fashion trends. She was eminently equipped being the protégé of the French embroidery maestro, Francois Lesage.

PASSIONATE ABOUT LIFE AND PEOPLE WHO “AREI AMCLOSE TO ME AND OFCOURSE MY WORK WHICH ACCOMPANIES ME WHEREVER I GO AND WHATEVER I

DO. THERE IS NEVER A DULL MOMENT! Time magazine declared that, “Ritu is the First lady of fashion in her country.” Beri was the First Asian to head a French fashion house, Jean Louis Scherrer. BBC said that, “Indian fashion takes a hold in the form of Ritu Beri.” Her creations were soon hailed by fashion connoisseurs across the world. Lesage believed that, “Ritu’s contemporary expression has given to an Indian tradition of clothes a mood of the Yves Saint Laurent collection of the eighties.” Her clothes have been worn by worldwide celebrities like Bill Clinton, Nicole Kidman, Prince Charles and Ivana Trump to name a few. In recognition of her path breaking contribution to fashion and design, she was awarded the prestigious French honour, Chevaliere des art et des Lettres. Ritu Beri’s persona emblazes the aesthetic flamboyance and beauty of her creations.

She is amongst the most photographed and recognizable faces in India. She has been listed amongst the 50 most important people in India; she was listed as one of the Top 15 Indian Women; she was voted several times as the most popular Indian designer; she was a nominee for the Economic Times Business Woman of the year Award in India; she is noted to be amongst the 20 Best Dressed Celebrity Icons in India; she was voted “Delhi’s Most Stylish’ in a nationwide poll conducted by Hindustan Times; and she was declared by Tag Heuer as their ‘Link Lady of India’. The prime minister, Dr Manmohan Singh said that,” Ritu Beri truly represents resurgent India.” At the peak of her creative abilities, Ritu Beri is all set to further revolutionize the horizons of India’s remarkable interface with global fashion. einvention of classics with new silhouettes illustrates Manish Malhotra’s first collection of 2014. With a feminine feel and softness as base; the one – of- kind concept diversifies this range from his former collection of royalty and bridal. Compilation of contemporary looks with abstract embroideries and innovative outline sketches out the modern chic concept of Manish’s new collection. The year begins with a lot of sheer and lace; the translucent look with floral thread embroideries and modern-day silhouettes that flow into long soft skirts and floor length anarkalis. Well-tailored lines are enhanced with sensuous summer lace and elaborate thread work paired with signature flowy georgette flared pants. The colour palette ranges from shades of soft pastels to conceptual embroideries on deeper hues of browns, blues, greens and burgundy to classic neutrals and blush tone of pinks. The saris are romanticized into flared skirts with the trailing pallus adding softness along with drama. A blend of summery tunics, lehenga skirts and long jackets in the collection make an absolute assortment of elegance to the diffusion line as evening wear. Double breasted Bandhgalas, in deeper hues is the predominant look of 2014 for men. Interesting elements with minute detailing add a new dimension to the menswear. A subtle touch of lace, velvet collars and antique gold buttons enhances neutral poise in few looks for men. Embroidered patchwork on bandhgalas and interesting colours like salmon pink assure the classics are ready to have fun. The flair and style in each piece recites a story of utter panache and modern day chic.

Tarun Tahiliani’s

Spring Summer Collection 2014

T

he Spring Summer Collection 2014 sets out to recreate the same sense of wonder. Using myriad ideas – from sorbet colours to arcane techniques, this box transforms into that of Pandora’s. Full of mystery and revelation; of languorous resort wear, each version surprising and unique in its entirety and yet part of this assorted collection. With emphasis on prêt a porter, it focuses on exquisite separates that can be paired up to create various permutations and combinations that never get old. It takes you from the delicate land of European chintz to indigenous Bidri work to Jamawaar and abstract art. The multiple influences are translated into everything from a T-shirt and pencil skirt to a lehenga, kaftan or a sari because despite being Ready -To -Wear one style does not fit all. Moving towards a more relaxed glamour it effectively uses summer cottons and sushi voile, fine thread work and chikankari that belie comfort in fashion. An understated elegance that brings to the fore the importance of dressing up in the day – be it ombre chiffon saris or kimkhab kurtas in sheer gossamer silk. A cornucopia of colour teeming with vitality is an essential for our tropical summer. Indigo mustard and fuchsia frolic creating shades of the sunset. Bombarded by colours that personify the joie de vivre of an Indian festival; almost as a corollary there is the brahmanical restraint of black and white, ivory and beige.

24 MARCH / APRIL 2014

Paisley is reincarnated in a desi avatar making its presence felt in kaftans that flow with the wind and yet mould themselves to the body. Like an efficient paradox, bold flamboyant borders give body to garments and provide poetic contrast to pieces of otherwise stoic reserve. The architectural wonder that is this collection comes through with the extensive use of levels, panels and layering. Creating sundry optical illusion it can be used to give an impression of height. The structured panels in flowing fabric allow a trompel’oeil effect. Adding a bottom cowl to a skirt or a layered cape kurta that sits elegantly on one’s shoulder, the masters of drape have gone back to their roots and reintroduced custom draping in every day wear. Le Kurta Nouveau Traditional clothing with the ease of every day wear. Debuting in this collection - the kurta comes with the twist of an attached dupatta. Modern in silhouette and draped like slouched luxury, it forms different levels in the same piece of clothing and moulds itself to the body. The concept kurtas go beyond imagination – asymmetrical, floral, abstract, draped, high slit, cut out, lace work; one is spoilt for choice.

Photos: Tarun Tahiliani

Gilet A separate that stands out – it’s a trend in the making. Versatile enough to move across continents, the gilet looks perfectly at home over bidri pants, a dhoti sari or a traditional kurta. The lame cutwork gilet is an engineering feat that smooth’s over the torso without breaking even flow. This multipurpose garment brings together fashion and function as kasab gilet, with filigree like intricacy keeps the flaming orange dhoti sari in place. Launching Help Our Heritage – a Tarun Tahiliani sub label Championing Indian handloom and textiles in saris and dupattas that form an integral part of the Indian heritage. The focus is on quality and novel handloom weaves and saris made with traditional technique with design value addition at very competitive pricesaimed to help in the revival of not only the industry but the practice of donning these precious heirlooms as a fashion statement. the heart of the fragrance’s strong olfactory signature and original yet universal character. It opens brightly with a hint of bergamot to pique curiosity, softened by a peach so perfectly tangy it makes your mouth water. We may imagine it as fleeting as fashion,as immediate as pleasure, but this is only the beginning, just the preface. After the fresh top notes the composition moves into a delicate floral heart, a voluptuous, luxurious bouquet of mimosa-violet, rose and lily-ofthe-valley, sustained by a deep sillage of patchouli, white musk and vanilla.

More than a luxury brand, Mercedes-Benz is a name that signifies belonging. Belonging to a certain world. The world of creation and design, the world of beauty, rarity and exception. Sharing a lifestyle. A life dedicated to style. Sharing habits, outlooks and preferences.

HAIRCARE

Revealed!!!

6 HairMyths What’s best for your Hair.

“Frequent trims makes your hair grow faster.” We have heard this myth so many times from our hairdressers who are scissor happy. Think about it, if you are trying to grow out your hair, why would you cut your hair so often; you’re just cutting off any new growth. Truth is, hair grows about half-inch per month whether its cut or not. That doesn’t mean stop cutting your hair altogether, adding an occasional trim (when needed) will take care of any split ends and prevent them from traveling higher up the hair- so you wouldn’t have to cut more later on. “If you pluck out one gray hair, more will sprout in its place.” We all have had that feeling when we see our first gray hair, tempted to pull it but are afraid of this common myth. It's been proven that pulling out one gray hair will not cause many more to sprout out, but it can eventually damage that root which causes infections and scarring. “You can mend split ends with the right products.” As much as this pains us to say (and believe) there is no magical product that will mend split ends. There are many products that will make them appear temporarily smoother, but the only way to get rid of split ends is to chop them off. “You have to constantly switch up your products because your hair will get used to it.” 58 MARCH / APRIL 2014

We ourselves used to believe this myth. Truth is, hair cannot tell a difference between brands or build up a tolerance to any product. If you find that your shampoo/ conditioner isn't working its magic like usual try swamping once a week to a clarifying shampoo to remove any excess build-up. “Natural shampoos are the only kind that are gentle enough for hair.” This is definitely not true. The hair industry has certainly excelled and companies have noted that consumers want gentle options too. There are many shampoos on today's market that are sulfate free, contain natural oils, and are proven to be gentle enough not to weaken the hair.

“If your hair is falling out, you should be concerned.” This is 100% normal, up to 100 hair sheds a day because your hair is constantly going through a hair cycle. The hair that is shed will be replaced. If you find that you are losing more hair than normal, then visiting your dermatologist will be best to help you further.

TIMEPIECES

T

he G-Chrono collection of timepieces is one of the most iconic ranges within the Gucci Timepieces portfolio. With its bold G-shaped bezel, the timepiece pays homage to one of Gucci’s strongest motifs and has been updated to include more of Gucci’s iconic detailing. Gucci Timepieces & Jewelry is pleased to announce a new addition to the G-Chrono family in ceramic. In contrast to the existing extra large (44mm) timepiece, this latest model presents a smaller (38mm) size, with a case crafted in ceramic and stainless steel, and the addition of Gucci’s recognizable diamante pattern on the dial. The gloss of the polished black or white ceramic provides a luxurious touch and lends the timepiece a dressier feel. Dials are coordinated accordingly: the black version shows a black sun-brushed dial, whilst the white variant comes with a silver sun-brushed dial. Additional details on the watch include the Gucci ‘G’ on the crown and Gucci logo at 12 o’clock. The Swiss Made seal is seen at 6 o’clock. The new size, together with the introduction of Arabic numerals, two generous push buttons and two sub counters on the dial combine to create a neat, stylish timepiece that will transition from work to play. This restyling of the dial design results in a timepiece that retains the bold aesthetic of the G-Chrono, whilst creating a distinct identity for this smaller model.

REVISITING A CLASSIC: INTRODUCING THE LARGE G-CHRONO IN CERAMIC

60 MARCH / APRIL 2014

The Interlocking model is a relative newcomer to Gucci Timepieces’ portfolio of watches, yet seamlessly blends into the portfolio through its inimitable Gucci style and use of strong Gucci icons. The watch features the interlocking GG motif, an interpretation of founder Guccio Gucci’s initials, made famous by Gucci in the 1960s. Now, Gucci Timepieces & Jewelry is pleased to add a new variant to the collection in a smart anthracite color, distinguished by an interplay of glossy and matt materials. The extra-large size (42mm) of this bold watch shows off the detail of the interlocking GG motif, which is worked in contrasting polished and brushed matt PVD. The bezel of the Interlocking timepiece is the perfect canvas for this recognizable Gucci symbol. In keeping with the streamlined look of this extension, the dial is kept beautifully simple, displaying only the Gucci logo at 12 o’clock and the ‘Swiss Made’ seal at 6 o’clock, on a slate grey sun-brushed background. The stainless steel bracelet, finished with an anthracite polished PVD treatment, introduces a dressy touch to the overall modern, masculine aesthetic.

Gucci Timepieces & Jewelry is pleased to introduce three additions to the G-Timeless Slim collection. Retaining its streamlined allure, the new G-Timeless Slim comprises a Swiss Made ETA 2895 automatic movement, and has been updated with a new leaner dial and a gently curved bezel, which adds a delicate accent to the watch. New features on the dial include a broader diamante pattern, which has been extended to the very edges of the dial to create a strong, contemporary aesthetic. The addition of a minute counter, together with a small second at 6 o’clock, adds dynamism to the piece. Finally, applied indexes have been made narrower, in keeping with the more minimalist look. The G-Timeless Slim Automatic is available in three variants: two in stainless steel with a choice of black or silver dials, and one version with pink gold accents. The first model comes with a stainless steel bracelet and displays a black dial accented with pink gold colored indexes and hands. A second variant has been worked with a black leather strap and shows a silver-colored dial with a contrasting black minute counter. Completing the trio is an exclusive model in pink gold and steel, adorned with an 18kt pink gold capped bezel. This is set off by a light pink colored dial and contrasting white minute counter. A matching brown crocodile strap adds a final special touch. Each timepiece is offered in a large size (40mm) and features a transparent glass case back, which showcases the oscillating weight, decorated with Gucci’s iconic diamante pattern echoing the design on the dial. The G-Timeless Slim Automatic timepieces all display the Swiss Made seal at 6 o’clock and date at 3 o’clock, accompanied by the Gucci logo and automatic mention at 12 o’clock.

Strong & Soulful

64 MARCH / APRIL 2014

Austrian mother and Indian father drove her to gigs as she strummed folk-pop at local clubs. She credits her first band, Supernal, for years of touring Canada and releasing four independent rock albums; experiences that augmented her natural vocal ability and refined her songwriting skills. Relocating to Toronto, her most recent band Drive Faster was featured on the AUX TV show “Master Tracks” filmed in Metal Works studios with producers Moe Berg and Laurence Currie. Berg described the process as a “homerun” and said Angela “is just so outstanding. You almost get a rush when you are recording someone like that.” Frequently gigging as an acoustic solo artist, Angela decided to take her songs electric and got the attention of Johnny Fay, drummer for The Tragically Hip. Demo sessions became pre-production for her debut “Cake and Callouses” and a year later, Angela is taking her next Leap. Her strong and soulful voice is carrying her wherever she decides to go next. F

resh off a Dutch tour and three crossCanada tours in the last year, Angela Saini recently released her second EP “Leap.” Her first effort “Cake and Callouses” garnered a Toronto Independent Music Award Nomination as well as a “Best Female Artist” nomination in the International Acoustic Music Awards: noteworthy accomplishments for an artist that stepped away from her rock band and started a solo career less than 3 years ago. "Leap" is aptly named as she committed to the recording process without knowing how she was going to finance it. A successful fan-funding campaign last year proved her message that anything is possible when you have passion and a little courage. The resulting EP showcases songs about self-renewal, empowerment, love and life. Her willingness and courage to make life changes, and optimism of the human condition, are clearly coherent in her songs. An illness and hospital stay in India instigated her journey of evolving into a solo artist, and since then she has developed her own spiritual and optimistic artistry. Angela delves into humanistic and honest themes in her songwriting. A self-admitted “dreamchaser”, her strong and soulful voice is car-

rying her wherever she decides to go next, with a guitar strapped to her back. Angela broke into the local music scene in her hometown of Calgary, AB before she had finished her first year of high school. Teaching herself to play guitar at 14, her
