‘The Regal

Threads’ A Celebration of Couture Heritage

A

fter celebrating a momentous 2015 marking 10 Years of his eponymous label, Manish Malhotra celebrated yet another milestone with his new collection - ‘THE REGAL THREADS’. An ode to ‘Make in India’, THE REGAL THREADS is the first collection of 2016 from Manish Malhotra that saw the use of Indian heritage weaves for the very first time by the couturier. The collection was showcased over a gala event hosted by the Sahachari Foundation at The Trident Nariman Point, Mumbai. The design-story of THE REGAL THREADS has been inspired by Manish’s consummate passion for reviving Indian craftsmanship. Manish’s journey with Kashmiri craft has been well-known. From starting work with 50 Kashmiri artisans four years ago, this effort now employs over 200 artisans. In this spirit of inclusion and India pride, this year, the label has continued the effort of giving back with craftsmen of Benaras and Gujarat. Every yard of fabric used in THE REGAL THREADS has been personally curated by Manish and specially sourced from local weavers and crafts

clusters in Varanasi and across Gujarat. THE REGAL THREADS charts a new direction for a label with the use of handcrafted fabric – including Benarasi silk, fine cottons, decadent brocades and Bandhini. Following the label’s endeavor to translate the craftsmen’s works of beauty to evening-wear for the modern Indian woman, THE REGAL THREADS showcased elegant saris in bold checks, voluminous lehengas and feminine blouses with mirror-work, high-waisted skirts and flowy kalidars. The vibrant colour palette ranged from bright pink and orange to lime green and deep blue, signifying the many moods of a strong, confident woman. Speaking about his new collection Manish Malhotra says, “The new year brings with it a new, exciting chapter for my label. This is the first time I have worked with Benarasi weaves and the creative process of putting together the collection has been immensely gratifying. The Regal Threads is my tribute to our weavers and craftsmen who have upheld centuries-old crafts traditions. It is a celebration of couture heritage, colours and the glamour of India in our style.”

y means of a specific sensation, every single colour stimulates the aspiration for totality in the eye”: this is what Goethe wrote in his Theory of Colours. A work which is published in 1810 or, rather, twenty years after his famous Italian journey. It was precisely during his visit to our country, with its distinct landscape and unforgettable shades, that his interest and passion in the study of colour was aroused. The magnificent shades of Tuscan nature and the elegant colours of the pictorial art of Florence are what today inspire the new summer collection by designer Stefano Ricci: a personal “theory of colour” which is in line with the vital imagination of the Maison, with its radiant vision of a male elegance which is both personal and eclectic. The eclecticism of the shape, the marvel of the colour and the unique quality of the STEFANO RICCI style develop an authentically creative dialogue with the stunning decorative elements of Castello di Sammezzano, a remarkable set in which to produce the lookbook. Usually closed to public viewing, the Castle is a gem of Moorish architecture, a 19th century folie filled with intricate symbolisms. It is perched on the hills just outside Florence, with its staggering and kaleidoscopic oriental inventions, as if to remind us that colour and light find a home in the heart of man. As Goethe wrote, “when we are exposed to the influence of an external colour, we create harmony and balance creating a complementary internal colour”: the harmony and balance which Stefano Ricci researches, designs and creates season after season make colour

46 MARCH / APRIL 2016

the natural exaltation of a quality which starts with the fibers, the fabrics, the materials, from the heart itself of the collections, to become a stylistic and personal choice of those who choose, day after day, to express themselves through the best that art and craftsmanship are able to achieve. Tasteful tailored constructions which conceal the manual work behind an extraordinary lightness; proportions researched according to perfect canons; personal combinations which enhance the patterns, the fine, long-staple fibers, the beloved contrasts which exalt a view of ever dynamic style; chromatically evolved accessories, handmade not only to complete the wardrobe but to enhance the colours of the jackets, the finishes and details; precious buckles and jewel-cufflinks. The collection which Stefano Ricci has designed for summer 2016 is sculpted in pristine Tuscan air: precious and rigorously tasteful, it is also fully Italian in its “fuggir l’affettazione”, as Baldassare Castiglioni would have said or, rather, in concealing the art and showing how “what one does and says is done without effort and almost without thinking.” But the intimate lightness, the hidden sense of this beautiful simplicity is in truth the fruit of the art, the craft and the innovative view which Stefano Ricci imprints on his world: a world where the eagle, a symbol and chrysalis which transforms into a tasteful ornament, brings to mind a nobility which is impressed in every detail. EXPLORERS OF BEAUTY - The three-button Safari jacket made of silk, linen and cotton has a precious artisanal material

consistency; worn with the ultra-light cashmere scarf, it has large curved pockets and is worn ton-sur-ton on cotton and cashmere trousers embellished by leather details, straight, perfect above the matted crocodile leather espadrilles which are rigorously handmade. The cotton and silk casual jackets are worn with a driver hat, perfect also for the short, zipped blousons made from wool, silk and linen. SKILL AND EVOLUTION - The jacket remains long and fitted, but the structure has been greatly lightened. Here again, the fruitful contaminations of casualwear introduce a variation on the theme of elegance, taking the most classic and structured garment to a new shape, to a unique balance between lightness and performance. Crocodile, reference material for the leather products by STEFANO RICCI, is present in six different styles: nabuk, smooth-matted, matted, shiny, semi-shiny, antique-finish, all skilfully handmade to bring out the preciousness of the crocodile at its best. COLOURS - Intense gold, delicate peach, reflective mallow, iconic Ricci Blue, turquoise, deep water green; but also white, grey, ice. Shades of the land and countryside alternate with reds that turn brown, never dazzling but always intense. Precious and bright variations of a range based on the colour palettes of the great renaissance painters, the colours chosen by Stefano Ricci for summer 2016 are always intense, refined, enhanced by the three-dimensional craftsmanship of the fabrics, knitwear and leathers. ‹

MENSWEAR

Spring/Summer 2016 Collection DAY - Sportiness, relaxation, discreet elegance. Casual jackets made from silk and cashmere or lightweight down jackets with tasteful details brought to shirts made from cotton and silk, with exclusive patterns by Stefano Ricci and with a contrasting collar. The trousers are always casual and the cotton is finished with leather details. The denim effect makes the blue crocodile blouson stunning, just like the baseball cap: because jeans should also be adorned with prestigious accessories, and they are worn with cotton shirts having an immediately recognizable consistency. The contemporary style of the tricot effect jacket, volumetrically evolved, is enhanced by the jogging pants and by the crocodile leather sneakers, in the shades of ice and iron, of cream, of intense ultramarine green. Nappa leather and micro-perforated suede make an exceptionally tasteful material for the short blouson worn over casual linen and cotton trousers, like the blouson made from crocodile and nappa leather. 48 MARCH / APRIL 2016

BUSINESS - Show personality through impeccable combinations: not only perfectly cut three-piece suits in exclusive Super 180’s wool fabric, but also two-button suit jackets made from exclusive tartans worn with cotton trousers which match its main colour, echoed also by the extra light cashmere scarf. Under the suit jackets made from exclusive blends are shirts in silk/cotton, linen/cotton (exclusive blends by STEFANO RICCI) or four-button silk polo shirts. The squares, the tartans, the micro-squares make each suit jacket highly personal, worn both with jeans or ton-sur-ton trousers. The skilful artisan techniques allow to achieve the same shade on materials which differ one from the other: the formal suit can also be composed of a two-button cotton suit jacket and casual linen and cotton trousers without minimally upsetting the harmony of the silhouette. The double-breasted suit jackets with Tiepolo-like colours, echoed by the crocodile leather loafers, are worn over crisp white cotton trousers. Naturally,

the tailored cut enhances the three-piece suits made from Super 150’s wool and cashmere, in intense precious colours, worn with hand-printed silk ties. COCKTAIL - The impeccable tuxedo has peak lapels and is made from an exclusive Super 160’s or Super 180’s wool fabric; it is worn with a handmade silk bow tie, which is classic and perfectly proportioned, while the immaculate tuxedo shirt is embellished by gold and diamond cufflinks, also made in STEFANO RICCI’s atelier. More than just black: the tuxedo also comes in an intense dark blue, like darkness just mingled with the light and worn over luxurious velvet shoes. In the version with silk covered lapels, the shoe is made from patent leather and the cufflinks are set with the precious graphics of onyx. Naturally, the Antico Setificio Fiorentino silk, unique in the world, used to make suits and shoes, have a tasteful threedimensional quality. It comes in shades of blue, green and white, to wear with ties made with a rich silk finish.

SPORT - STEFANO RICCI blends his tasteful luxury with the most dynamic moments of the day, between training and relaxation moments: the research on fabrics and finishes ensures that the performance is never in contrast with preciousness. Walks or hunts in the countryside require hyper-performing silk jackets and casual wool/silk trousers, worn over handmade sneakers. The tracksuit is made from a cotton/silk blend or entirely from exclusive STEFANO RICCI silk, with details in matted crocodile leather with colours designed and perfectly matched; it is worn with a casual jacket made from nappa leather with hood and perforated details, perfect to encourage transpiration. The more technical garments have a hidden button-down closure: the attention to detail, the skill on all the elements is a distinguishing feature for STEFANO RICCI. Like in the “Olympia” sneakers, made from high-tech silk and with details in crocodile leather: presented for the first time in the previous season, it is already a best-seller.

ACCESSORIES - All the belts are handmade in calfskin or crocodile leather; the eagle head, emblem of the Maison, is joined by the elephant with its trunk up, chiselled by hand. The weekend duffle bag, made from silk, linen and cotton, has matted crocodile leather details which highlight the colours of blue, tobacco and ice. The espadrilles are handmade using the exclusive matted crocodile leather by STEFANO RICCI, available in seasonal colours, which naturally include Ricci Blue. The iconic calfskin leather briefcase presents super neat lines, while the messenger bag has tasteful details in crocodile leather; always in calfskin leather – but artfully polished – are the sneakers while the car shoes are made from tasteful denim effect crocodile leather. The driver hat made from matted crocodile leather or from silk with leather details. The tasteful elongated backpack is made from finely engraved leather and bears the STEFANO RICCI logo. The buttons of the suit jackets and casual

ather than look at one destination, this season I decided to look at travelling the world,” says Kim Jones, the Men’s Artistic Director of Louis Vuitton. “Now the world traveller picks things up wherever he goes and makes them his own. In this collection we are using many ideas and techniques from South East Asia, from Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. At the same time, we wanted to look at how those styles share so much globally; say how the traditional dress of the Lahu tribe in Thailand looks so much like contemporary sportswear. Fashion is a language that reflects different cultures and tribes globally from New York, Tokyo, Bangkok and Paris – and Louis Vuitton is really a part of that.” This season, the Louis Vuitton Men’s collection is a celebration of the similarities in global style rather than its differences. Both transposing and transforming traditional and contemporary dress codes from Thailand’s Lahu tribe to America’s Ivy League, the Louis Vuitton collection playfully stakes its place as part of that pantheon, of the global language of fashion.

Looking at how people identify themselves the world over, from the wearing of the humble tourist souvenir jacket to being clothed in timeless, luxurious icons of menswear, the Louis Vuitton collection works as a form of extended clothing remix, with the codes of the House at its heart. Here, traditional, intricate striped Thai embroidery echoes contemporary sportswear as well as the personalised stripes of the LV Monogram; the silhouettes of South East Asian national dress reflect the large volumes of the American baseball top or track pant in embroidered silk; new forms of light, organza bonded leathers with taped seams, luxuriously echo traditional utilitarian waterproofs of the past and are made fully reversible; while timeless indigo features as a global, unifying colour from the lavish, hand dyed and sun dried Japanese Kobe leathers in traditional American flight jacket shapes, via new silk mixed denims, to discharge printed silk parkas in their new, ‘brush stroke’ camouflage patterns. Even pearl accessories are lavishly treated with indigo while the pearl is still forming in the shell.

The Louis Vuitton Monogram, Epi and Taïga are the unifying fabrications that unite the collection through footwear and bags. A new ultra-supple canvas makes the Monogram more lightweight and packable than ever in high-luxury utilitarian bags; the textured Epi leather also finds form in footwear this season as well as in its more traditional, structured maroquinerie; while the Taïga is reintroduced both for footwear and bag-making, adding another layer of texture to the playful leather goods. Today’s show music is by the inimitable performer and producer Nile Rodgers. “Of course Nile is a hero of mine,” says Kim Jones. “And he was perfect to work with this season as he is somebody that has crossed all boundaries with the many different artists he has collaborated with the world over. Taking those global influences, mixing them together and making a new sound – Nile’s music is a metaphor for the collection.” MARCH / APRIL 2016 51

Anne Sofie Madsen SS16

52 MARCH / APRIL 2016

Showing for the second time at Paris fashion week official calendar, Danish designer Anne Sofie Madsen, explores the struggle between the confessed desire to dress and the un-confessed desire to undress in her Spring/Summer 2016 collection. Having graduated from the Roya Danish academy of Fine Arts, Madsen's career has gone from strength to strength. Previous roles include training under John Galliano, and later working for Alexander McQueen. The label Anne Sofie Madsen was founded in 2011 and since her collections have been presented at London, Milan and Copenhagen fashion weeks. Her most recent project has been her footwear collaboration with Farewell. This collection undoubtedly embodies the contrast between something extremely vulnerable and private but at the same time exposed and powerfully seductive. These feelings are evoked by the fusion of reinterpreted corsetry and soft layering of organza, presented alongside strict shapes of draped denim and light wool. Flasher coats open up to reveal floating lace and tenderly crafted smocks. Rigid gridded structures and latex combined with delicate floral embroideries; a fluidity between desire and detachment.

The Only Limit is Your Imagination The vocabulary of virtual worlds beckons us to initiate a quest, a maiden voyage, a heroic journey in which the protagonist gains strength, wisdom and character every step of the way. “Heroic Fantasy” is the perfect term to define these fabulous journeys. Fashion also participates in this same voyage of self-knowledge, freedom and discovering one’s own personalities. This spring-summer 2016 collection is about stylistic role-playing, where the heroine passes through various sartorial levels and explores a universe of multiple atmospheres. In passing through these aesthetic levels, the entire evolution of a classic, urban wardrobe is gradually remastered, rooted in the illusion of materials that are, in fact, very real: linen, silk, leather, python and shagreen are “re-loaded” by the celebrated Maison’s “savoir-faire”. With every world that our heroine experiences, the silhouette, constantly evolving, seeks to answer a question. Gender fluidity? Modern romance? The power of the body? Absolute femininity? Louis Vuitton sets off to conquer the fascinating territory that is today’s woman, a complement of strength and fragility. And it offers up an exhilarating challenge: “The adventure depends on you.”

74 MARCH / APRIL 2016

80° A slant line marks the card pocket. Placed at an 80° angle, this contributes to the understated yet elegant design and positions the cards to fit in at an upward angle, which consequently keeps them tightly secure and in place. We’ve designed the iPhone 6s wallet case as slim as possible. In line with our vision, the wallet case is contemporary and still remarkably simple. It doesn’t shout, ‘look at me,’ but rather calmly hints craftsmanship through its understated appearance, which is due in considerable part to the premium quality of our signature vegetable-tanned leather. Openings of the case expose the volume rockers, headphone-jack, and lighting connector; enabling users to listen to their favorite music and charge their iPhone 6s while the device is protected. While it’s not easy to keep things simple, it does pay off to create a product that is perfect in a sense of simplicity to that extent that you cannot leave anything away without compromising its intention. Introducing Moulded Edge Technology Made from a durable, polished polycarbonate, Moulded Edge Technology strengthens the durability of our leather

at the most fragile points. The Moulded Edge Technology is a major step-up that toughens the edges of the case and enables it to withstand the damaging wear and tear caused by friction against rough materials such as jeans pockets. Crafted from our Signature Leather The Leather Wallet Case is crafted from premium quality vegetable-tanned leather. Our highly acclaimed leather adds character to the case and is predominantly responsible for the achievements of our collections. The high quality and attention to detail has become a hallmark for both Mujjo’s products and brand. Manufactured with care and waxed to extend durability, and carefully treated with aniline oil to enrich ‘color tones’.

Our Vegetable-tanned leather wears in with every use and acquires a beautiful patina and polish over time. MARCH / APRIL 2016 75

PolarBears North Tips of an Iceberg on an Arctic Circle Cruises he Arctic is on many bucket lists thanks to polar bears and Northern Lights. But what else may travelers anticipate on a cruise in the Arctic Circle? And what questions should they ask when booking a cruise on the Arctic Ocean, the world’s smallest and shallowest ocean that is fringed by eight countries? Todd Smith, small ship cruise expert and founder of AdventureSmith Explorations, discusses the variables of itineraries and small ships plying this region, home to four million people living in the shadow of Viking conquests and explorers. His sage advice, “How to Choose Your Arctic Cruise”, shares what he calls “an incredible range of conditions” in the May through September Arctic summer. These conditions help to determine itineraries and therefore passenger experiences. For example, early season (late May through early July) polar bears on ice floes are prevalent. In July and August ice is more disbursed, allowing land access and explorations of nutrient-rich waters favored by whales. September nights bring the magnificent aurora borealis. Arctic expeditions generally operate during the summer in North America and Europe. Cruises begin in May and continue through September. During this short arctic summer there is an incredible range of conditions and the best time to travel to the Arctic should be based on what one wishes to experience. Seasonal highlights can vary each year, roughly following the patterns below. 86 MARCH / APRIL 2016

Late May-Early July During the early-season months, sea ice is prevalent, and the possibility of seeing more polar bears is a bonus during this time as they’re easier to spot out on the polar ice. A full circumnavigation of Spitsbergen is likely not possible at this time. Early-season voyages often provide the greatest opportunity to see large ice floes in the Arctic pack ice, which usually means excellent wildlife viewing. July-August Svalbard and Spitsbergen expeditions sail at this time as the sea ice is more broken up, offering the chance of circumnavigation, more wildlife spotting, more landings and land access in general. Polar bear spotting takes a keener eye at times as they can be a bit harder to spot on land vs. the sea ice. As you’ll cover more territory this time of year, ships can explore more of the Svalbard archipelago, which can lead into the less explored regions of Nordaustlandet and Kvitøya, or the continental edges where large whales are attracted by nutrient-rich upwellings. September Fall comes early in the Arctic, and by September nights are dark enough to witness the Aurora borealis, Northern Lights. Time at sea is perfect for witnessing this

phenomenon, while days are still spent exploring sites up close and searching for wildlife.

hern Lights The experiences guests seek may also determine the ship they choose. AdventureSmith Explorations’ fleet of expedition ships cruising to the Arctic carry 78 to 148 guests and are specially outfitted to travel in polar waters. They are all fairly similar in terms of ice class and amenities. For more intimate explorations, this company also recommends a fleet of vessels carrying just 16 to 20 guests that offer the same close-up exploration

as larger expedition ships but also provide access to shallow harbors and small islands. The length of a cruise and the price also come into play, said Smith. Following is a handful of specials for 2016 Arctic cruises. The 11-day Home of Vikings cruise is aboard the 116-guest Sea Spirit. This specific tour through fjords in the High Arctic begins in Iceland and explores South and West Greenland in search of whales and other arctic wildlife. Guests explore the town of Nanortalik at the mouth of beautiful Tasermiut Fjord surrounded by steep mountains that flank an intricate fjord system. They soak in geothermal waters watching the icebergs pass by in Uunartoq. And they visit the enchanting West Greenlandic tiny settlements of Qaqortoq, Hvalsey Qassiarsuk. Paamiut, Nuuk, Itteliq and Sisimiut to discover Viking history and witness urban arctic living amongst the colorful homes. Sea kayaking along this rugged coastline is a favorite pastime on this adventure. Polar guests will save up to 25 percent with an Early Booking

Discount for designated Arctic cruises in 2016. Guests save 15 percent on AdventureSmith’s Realm of the Polar Bear on departures between June 13 and Aug. 10, 2016 if booked by March 1, 2016. During the 8-day Realm of the Polar Bear cruise, experience an Arctic expedition to the remote island of Spitsbergen and into the land of the polar bear. High in the Arctic, Spitsbergen is an island within the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago that is ensnared in ice during much of the year. However, as summer approaches, the ice gives way to scenic fjords and stunning scenery frequented by the world’s largest land carnivore - the polar bear! Birders and nature enthusiasts will enjoy what seems like endless hours of wildlife spotting opportunities, while history buffs will be intrigued by the numerous research bases and the history of the island’s capital, Longyearbyen. Above the Arctic Circle, these cruises are pure expeditions, where weather and wildlife dictate the route for the coming day. With the possibility of circumnavigating Spitsbergen and reaching 80 degrees north latitude, you’ll experience parts of the world seen by only a select group of people.
