last minute walk into a museum leads to a fortuitous event. Staring at a painting and instantly there is a spark. A bond is formed over common interests and a relationship develops. This is not a love story; it’s the story of how the 2015 Spring/Summer line came to be. Works by The Singh Twins play muse to this collection. In the unique genre of Past Modern, as opposed to Post Modern, The Singh Twins are two artists, twin sisters working as one, in tandem. Reviving the technique of miniature painting and juxtaposing it with modern iconography, they create vibrant and detailed work that questions the conventional notion of the arts. Their work is a mÊlange of many things; their Indian and British identities, eastern and western aesthetics, the personal and the political, social commentary with tongue in cheek humour. The highly decorated artists have been awarded the MBE (Member of the British Empire) and shown in the Smithsonian, the MusÊe Des Beaux Arts, the NGMA, and the National Portrait Gallery, London among others. The miniature style of painting translates beautifully to digitally printed clothing. The illustrative style of the padhsahnama makes them look like they belong in the gilded age of the past but you will find the modern, social commentary if you look for it. Selectively chosen elements from different paintings ensure that the wit is not lost in translation.

Tarun Tahiliani SS15 – With the Singh Twins Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week The Mughal sensibilities, the marriage of the old and the new fall neatly in the wheelhouse of the design oeuvre; of using age old techniques to forward a fun, playful idea that does not take itself too seriously. The saris shake up the status quo and transcend from being classic garb into a buzz of colour and shocking LED like borders. And there are various versions to choose from – the concept sari, the dhoti sari or the traditional one but rife with colours that spell riot. The borders, carrying Persian motifs can form up to ten concentric layers of framing. Used effectively in saris, these borders incorporate layer upon layer of colour, merging into one magnificent canvas from afar because of the delicate nature of the ombré. Used separately, the intricate borders themselves take centre stage on leggings and dresses. The vast

canvas of flowing silk kaftans allows the magic of the paintings to come through and the hyper-modern, sleekly cut gilets add eccentricity and style. The colour inspirations are so unexpected that it could only exist in nature. The blue orange hue of a macaw, the reds and yellows of the rising sun – the palette pays homage to the Indian identity that celebrates colour with gusto, in a bohemian or a sophisticated setting. Not restricted to a pre-designed ensemble, the separates enable experimentation. The dhoti skirts and the lungi skirts are one-of-a-kind pieces in light fabric that fit effortlessly for the day. Jewel Tees can be transformative for the evening with jewel tones combining hand painted goldkalis giving it the grandeur and aplomb of a Klimt painting. Loyalist, be not afraid, there are the usual trappings of a TarunTahiliani collection. The

sombre Whites, sophisticated in the summer sun and the sensual Blacks. Kalidarkurtas, kedeo tops in sedate, muted tones against the harsh weather break the monochrome monotony. Mughal influences in resham, classic chikankari and craftsmanship prove that the time intensive, labour intensive, regal sensibilities of the brand are not being left behind. The identity is being reshaped to reflect the zeitgeist as fashion and art collide. Dinaz Madhukar Senior Vice-President DLF Emporio says, “Tarun’s work exhibits best of both the worlds, old iconic heritage mixed with modern day aesthetic. As India’s first and finest luxury destination, it gives us immense pride to partner once again in showcasing his Spring Summer’15 collection at The Pavilion, DLF Emporio as its exclusivity, space and sublime ambience makes it the perfect venue for a grand show.” MARCH / APRIL 2015 11

Their companies are under seven flourishing sectors namely 5-Star hotels, construction, man-power, entertainment, FMCG, land & water developments. Being the eldest daughter of three, Hema took it upon herself to embrace her obligations of taking charge of their family’s business but deep inside, she never stopped nurturing the dream of becoming a fashion designer. She divided her time between running her part of the group while designing couture

pieces, which she sold privately Travelling the world to attend various fashion shows and purchasing materials that she could tinker with to come up with her little masterpieces with inspiration from her favourite designers like Alexander McQueen and Coco Chanel. In 2013 Hema seized the opportunity to showcase her designs on a global platform, it was no ordinary debut, however, unveiling her first complete International Collection at LONDON FASHION WEEK of Spring Summer 2014.

Hema Kaul’s collection encourages women to embrace their figures, and her collection has emphasised this through the use of full skirts, fitted shapes and peplums, with a strong vintage influence. Her dresses speak to women who like her are confident to fulfil their responsibilities but never stop seizing opportunities to better pursue what they are truly passionate about. JEWELRY

Celebrate

Beauty Luminance by Nirav Modi

rawing inspiration from the different intensities of light that create beautiful depths and patterns, jewels in the Luminance Collection aim to generate brilliance through different diamond cuts, sizes and shapes. Integrating this melody of light and luminosity with human emotions, the collection symbolizes the different stages of life spanning youth through maturity. Composed of carefully selected white diamonds, each jewel in the Luminance Collection is an inspired piece de resistance as it takes a great deal of patience and time to select exactly the right kind of diamonds that will complement each other to bring a piece to life. The diamonds are chosen to be perfectly proportionate and modulated to create visual movement. 28 MARCH / APRIL 2015

Pear and marquise shaped diamonds in cuts ranging from full cut, old mine cut, refaceted rose cut and rose cuts are arranged in gracefully flowing floral or cluster arrangements. Each diamond is set with fine melee tips adding another dimension of light further accentuating the negative space between design elements. In keeping with the brand’s philosophy of minimum metal and maximum brilliance, the diamonds are ingeniously linked by handcrafted knife edge connectors. A scintillating play of light coupled with visual movement, is the distinctive features of this collection comprising bracelets, necklaces, earrings, rings and pendants. MARCH / APRIL 2015 29

Prep for Your First Kiss

36 MARCH / APRIL 2015

Y

our Makeup isn’t complete without the essential accessory - a perfect pout! Below, Skinn Cosmetics’ CEO and founder Dimitri James provides his tips on creating a gorgeous bold lipped-look. The necessities: skin primer, foundation or CC cream, false eye lashes, waterproof mascara and eyeliner, and lipstick in a shade you love.

Make it happen: Step 1: Prime Start by applying a primer all over the face. Try Skinn’s Orchid Gel Mattifying Primer, complete with Orchid Extract that will neutralize orange and green tones in the skin so the contrast between skin tone, hair color and a vibrant lip won’t look hard or conflicting. Step 2: Coverage Next, apply a quality satin finish foundation or CC cream. Skinn’s Collagenesis Intellitint CC Cream is perfect because it recreates the color, texture and tone so skin appears smooth and flawless…..even if it’s not! Step 3: Lash Out Attach a band of lashes to each upper lash line. I recommend using a false lash set

that has longer lashes at the end of the strip. It will lift small eyes to make them appear larger and look more natural on larger eyes. Step 4: Blend Follow up the false lash application by sweeping a waterproof liner across the upper lash line and blending it in with a blending tool. Finish the eyes by applying a heavy coat of your favorite mascara. Step 4: Exfoliate This step is important! Velvet or matte finish lipsticks require a smooth surface as they accentuate any dryness. Use a good sugar scrub for lips like Skinn’s Sugar Lips Polishing Scrub to remove any dry flakes. Step 5:The Final Touch Finally, apply a matte velvet color to lips in a blue-based red or pink-red shade. Our Plasma Fusion Nourishing Lipsticks combine pure pigmented color with a rejuvenating balm for smooth, kissable lips! Or try Skinn’s Hollywood Berry Hot Lip Palette, debuting in January, featuring an array of shades to blend for the perfect color! And voila! It’s quick and easy, but you will look polished, perfect and prepped for your first kiss. MARCH / APRIL 2015 37

Bold Designs Ximon Lee – The First Ever Menswear Designer to Win the H&M Design Award.

48 MARCH / APRIL 2015

“It’s very street, its very art inspired, it’s very architectural, it’s very individual but at the same time it is approachable because you can see the story and history behind everything that he does. There is a lot of promise in him, we all saw that and we felt unanimously he was the front runner,” says Tommy Ton. Ximon, originally from Hong Kong, China, but now based in New York, was selected by an international jury in London. His innovative collection creates layers of organic and synthetic textures, including materials such as plastic and cardboard, to build exaggerated forms which sit away from the body. These new silhouettes are still identifiably garments, but which push menswear forward in their cut and shape. Key inspiration was the documentary Children of Leningradsky, with Ximon travelling to Russia to create his own personal moodboards for the collection.

“I was stunned when they announced I was the winner. The H&M Design Award means so much to me at the beginning of my career – I cannot imagine how I’d start my own label without it. My collection was designed as menswear but I’m excited to see it also worn by women,” says Ximon Lee. This year’s jury included: Luella Bartley, Design Director of Marc by Marc Jacobs Lucinda Chambers, Fashion Director of British Vogue Paula Goldstein di Principe, Creative Director Tommy Ton, Visual Journalist Angelo Flaccavento, Freelance Fashion Critic Justin O’Shea, Buying Director for Mytheresa.com Lily Allen, Singer/Songwriter Ann-Sofie Johansson, Head of Design, New Development, H&M Margareta van den Bosch, Creative Advisor, H&M

T

he winner of the H&M Design Award 2015 is Ximon Lee, a 24 year-old graduate from Parsons in New York. He is the first menswear designer to receive the award, and today he presented his winning collection at a fashion show during Fashion Week Stockholm. In addition to the show, Ximon has won €50,000 and the chance to develop pieces from his collection to be sold at selected H&M stores and online later this autumn. “Ximon’s collection captivated the jury with its contemporary yet poetic mood, with a strong feeling for fabric and an incredible attention to detail,” says Ann-Sofie Johansson, H&M’s head of design for New Development. “I think he is an incredible accomplished designer. He had everything; his research was beautiful, the fabric development was really accomplished and his design was good,” says Luella Bartley, Design Director of Marc by Marc Jacobs and member of the jury.

plays there once a month for a Bollywood night which has never happened in the history of Buddha Bar. He is also the only Indian DJ who features in Pacha’s summer 2014 compilation DJ and the first In dian DJ to compose a song for an IPL team Delhi Darevils. However, entertainment is his adrenaline, and he makes sure that he pumps yours too if he’s around at any party. In the recent past, he has rocked events hosted by the likes of Farooq Abdullah, Lakshmi Mittal, Anil Ambani, Sanjay & Ajay Chandra (unitech), Sameer Thapar, Burmans (Dabur family), Jaipurias (Pepsi), Goenkas, Ansals, Nishant and Khushali Kumar Arora, Anshuman Singhania, Lakhanis, Shalini Modi, Meera Nair and Miss Universe Organisation and the Morani brothers (Cineyug), among others. But not satisfied with simply dishing out popular tracks night after night, he has always striven to take up new challenges,

and has recently collaborated with global artists for his first international release ‘Unleashed’ which hit the Beatport charts at No 4 amongst names like Afrojack, Kylie Minogue & Nicky Romerio. The resident DJ at Pacha Ibiza, Peter Brown has collaborated with DJ Khushi for a track called “Party All Night” which was later signed on for House Session Records. Very recently he was the official DJ who opened for Tiesto and LMFAO at their India tours. Learning new skills everyday is not just an option, but a habit for him. While people spread happiness, Khushi spreads the love for music through his work. A complete foodie DJ Khusi owns Fat Ninja which is a Pan Asian restaurant at Hauz Khas Village , New Delhi and is spread over 5500 sq. feet with a beautiful view. Being benevolent by nature, Khushi also is an active founder of NGO SWAPN based in New Delhi.

f clichés be used, music is DJ Khushi Soni’s raison d’être. But, if truth be told, it’s the first, and till now, the only love of Khushi’s life. Even though he’s just 30 years old, Khushi’s musical repertoire is quite rich, courtesy the early age at which he began his rendezvous with sounds. And over a period of 9 years, he has simply expanded his soundscape, experimenting with every possible genre of music. Famed for his Bollywood, retro, hip hop, house and international dance music, DJ Khushi is the man behind Sound Station. Besides being SRK’s official DJ, Khushi also modestly enjoys the title of ‘The Bollywood Remix King’. It’s his Bollywood remixes for movies like Tamanchey, Ra One, Desi Boyz, Tume Mile, Main Aur Mrs Khanna, Kaminey, De Dana Dan, Agneepath, Housefull 2, Boss, Student Of The Year, Matru Ki Bajli Ka Mandola, Aashiqui 2 that have made him a household name in the Indian music fraternity. He’s the only DJ who was had the pleasure of working with Grammy winning artist Mr. A.R. Rahman. The ease with which he can dabble in sounds has taken him to the console at various top nightspots in the world and has played at most of the leading watering holes in India. He’s also matched his skills with stalwarts like Salman Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Shahid Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor, Malaika Arora Khan, Sophie Chowdhary amongst the film fraternity. And even though his ability lies in spinning sounds as varied as retro, hip hop as well as house, it’s Bollywood and EDM sounds that he enjoys immensely. Having played at Bollyland, TOIFA, Zee Cine Awards, Filmfare Awards, Stardust Awards and a horde of others, he is famously known for his live gigs for the crème de la crème. He’s worked alongside DJ’s like Suketu, Rishi Rich, Juggy D and Nikhil Chinapa, apart from working with music directors like Indian Ocean, Daler Mehndi, Mika, Pritam, Raju Singh, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, Mithoon Sharma, Shaan, Amit Trivedi, Vishal-Shekhar, Ajay-Atul. AUTHOR About The Author: Shunali Khullar Shroff has worked variously as a journalist, a freelance writer and the owner of a successful PR firm by the name of Spindoctors. That, however, was in another incarnation. As soon as the storks visited her, she plunged into motherhood with the trepidation of a reluctant air diver about to take her first leap of faith. An eternal optimist, she mistakenly assumed that she could retire to being a lady of leisure once the kids were out of their diapers. But soon she realized that happy challenges of motherhood last a lifetime. Ergo she took to writing a now widely read blog in order to hear herself think. Shunali is an inveterate traveler and apart from writing about parenting and social trends she blogs extensively about travel. Shunali lives in Mumbai with her husband, two daughters, a geriatric dog, and his juvenile companion.

Khullar Shroff Battle Hymn of a Bewildered Mother

A

s much with life, parenting in the new millennium does not come with an instruction manual. If you happen to be a girl about town, a super successful career woman, a must-live-each-dayas-it-comes kind of person, impending motherhood can be as imposing as a trip to outer space without an oxygen mask. Battle Hymn Of A Bewildered Mother isn’t just another run-of-the-mill parenting book, in fact it is opposite of everything you know. Shunali Khullar Shroff in Battle Hymn of a Bewildered Mother begins her journey as someone chronically devoid of what is naturally termed as the maternal instinct.

52 MARCH / APRIL 2015

But in spite of her misgivings, she eventually realizes there is nothing else she’d rather be doing than burping her babies while avoiding all traces of tranquilizers. This brilliant, whimsical, bumpy tale of everyday madness has a voice of a mother both honest and hilarious. From exchanging her corporate suits for mess-retardant mommy wear, from balancing work clients to battling two girls’ questions and demands, this book is a journey of a mother constantly walking on thin ice over the Bermuda Triangle. Based on the principles of lunacy and humour, Shunali Khullar Shroff reveals the realities of a parent in today’s ultramodern, supersonic, and chaotic world.

téphanie Coutas is first and foremost a devotee to craftsmanship and savoir-faire, who also designs plush, elegant and warm spaces. She subtly fuses her love of beautiful workmanship and romanticism to create neoclassical and contemporary interiors imbued with modern magic. She was brought up in Asia and spent most of her childhood abroad in stylish locations which sparked her passion for beautiful homes and interiors. She began her professional life in fashion before opening her interior design agency, 1001 maisons, in 2005 where she worked with a team of architects, decorators and designers on private homes, hotels and yachts in France and abroad. All her designs feature clean lines combined with spectacular decor, nude tones with precious wood, dévoré velvet, Murano glass and shagreen. Design is also one of her passions and at last year’s Designer’s Days, she presented

the Salamander Chair, made in collaboration with furniture maker Henryot & Cie. With its neoclassical shape, padded white leather seat adorned with a pair of wire salamanders, the chair embodies the haute couture furniture that the designer has always loved.

Avenue de New York Avenue de New York is a stylish project designed by Stephanie Coutas for a Spanish family based in Madrid who were looking for a genuine Parisian apartment close to Avenue Montaigne. Situated in the heart of Paris, the main focus when designing the apartment was to prioritise the stunning views over the Seine and the Eiffel Tower as the family wanted a Parisian feel to their home. The living room and open plan kitchen with a dining room were therefore designed to take advantage of the amazing views of Paris’ skyline. The centrally located three-bedroom apartment has a very striking entrance with a floor pattern in marble as well as a cosy living room with a fireplace and comfortable sofas. Throughout the apartment, the colour palette ranges from dark grey to blue to light green to beige and is true to Stephanie’s signature style of creating a plush, elegant and warm space. BTW, the purple specs you see in the stuffing is purple potatoes. TIP: 1. Microwave the peanuts for about a minute making sure they don’t burn out. Let it cool and roasted peanut is ready. 2.You can use any color pepper you like – red, green, yellow.

ntil a few years ago Myanmar (Burma) was off limits to most of us because of political sanctions. Nat Hab now joins a select set of companies introducing travelers to Myanmar, yet with a fresh angle. Its nature-focused itinerary pioneers eco-travel here by providing access to little-visited national parks and wildlife reserves such as Popa Mountain National Park, home to rare langurs (leaf monkeys), and the Mergui Archipelago where Burmese macaques, one of the world’s few tool-using primates, live and breed. The adventure begins in Myanmar’s capital, Yangon (Rangoon) where vestiges of British colonial life mingle with markets and commerce. Providing succor to monks (good karma for those on the path to enlightenment) and helping to feed and wash elephants at Green Hills Elephant Camp set the tone in the first days for a trip that mixes nature with spirit along the way. 60 MARCH / APRIL 2015

At Inle Lake, the hub of a rural region centered on farming and local markets, guests witness age-old floating agricultural techniques passed down through the generations and visit Inle Lake Wetland Sanctuary, home to more than 350 different bird species. Then, along the Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady) River travelers explore Bagan (Pagan) that harbors the world’s most prolific collection of ancient Buddhist temples, pagodas, stupas and shrines, some dating to the 11th and 12th centuries. Back in Yangon are opportunities to delve further into Buddhist culture by circumambulating the gilded Shwedagon Pagoda, a pilgrimage for the devout. After this introduction to the spirit of this land where time has stood still, guests fly south to board a private luxury catamaran to cruise the Andaman Sea along southern Myanmar and a sliver of the west coast of Thailand. The voyage passes through the Mergui Archipelago comprised of more than 800 islands, 770 of which are uninhab-

Transiting the marine border into southern Thailand brings guests to Khao Sok National Park, a karst landscape of vertical limestone mountains draped in the world's oldest virgin rainforest and littered with caves, deep valleys and jade-green lakes. Accommodation here is in a floating “raft lodge” on Cheow Lan Lake, one of the best wildlife-viewing regions in mainland Southeast Asia. Boasting innovative M TwinPower Turbo technology with a pair of TwinScroll turbochargers, cross-bank exhaust manifolds, VALVETRONIC and High Precision Direct Injection, the 4.4liter V8 produces maximum output of 567 hp

between 6,000 and 6,500 rpm. That represents a 3 percent increase over the predecessor models. The step up is even clearer when it comes to the power development of the new engine. Peak torque has been boosted by 53 lb-ft which equates to a rise of 10 percent. Its 553 lb-ft can be enjoyed across a broad rev range between 2,200 and 5,000 rpm. The two models accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds through the standard eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic and deliver Canadian fuel economy figures of 12.1 L/100 km Highway and 16.6 L/100 km City.

The new 2015 BMW

Powerful Looks and Exclusive Equipment. With their striking use of forms, the looks of the new BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M foretell their performance potential. With their exteriors painted fully in body color, both models cut a low-slung figure on the road, while mixed tires showcase their sporty track width. Additional exterior design modifications, moreover, elevate the M models even further than before from the standard BMW X5 and BMW X6. Large air intakes at the front end, side gills with a model badge and Air Breathers, signature M exterior mirrors in twin-stalk

style, a typically M four-tailpipe exhaust system and a rear spoiler (for the BMW X6 M) give them a standalone look M fans will immediately recognize. Setting the seal on this exclusive range of features are standard M-specific, forged 21-inch M light-alloy wheels. The high-quality interior impresses with its well-thought-through combination of sporty features, exclusive materials and flawless workmanship. The M instrument cluster, M leather steering wheel with aluminum gearshift paddles and M gearshift lever – which works in the same way as the familiar M Double Clutch Transmission

gearshift lever – are complemented by electrically operated M multi-function seats for the driver and front passenger, an M driver’s footrest and Head-Up Display which, in addition to the standard information, also includes an M-specific display with gear indicator, rev band and shift lights. New BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M customers also have the choice between various options exclusive to the M models, such as Merino full-leather trim. And there’s also a choice of two new and exclusive M paint finishes – Long Beach Blue Metallic and Donington Grey Metallic. MARCH / APRIL 2015 63
