anaa Tariq was born and raised in Tehran, the capital of Iran, in a traditional Pakistani Family. Growing up, Sanaa was blessed to not only be able to travel to all sorts of exotic destinations such as Mashhad, Shiraz and Isfahan with her family, she unknowingly began developing her fashion sense at a very early age. “The hospitality and culture I would get to see are life time memories for me,” Sanaa reminisces. “Playing dressing up games with my sisters was [also] a favourite hobby for me. Though I was really young, I can still remember the vibrant colors and prints my mom would wear to the diplomat parties in Iran. Visiting Pakistan on an annual basis in the heat of the summer holidays, I would see the yearly changing trends in Fashion and became increasingly closer to realizing my passion for colors and clothing.” Eventually, Sanaa’s travels brought her to Canada where she became a Finance student at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology

where she enjoyed taking part in non-profit events and has volunteered in charitable events like Project 500 for Pakistan Flood relief victims and the Edmonton Purple Hijab day. Husn-e-Afza (Divine Beauty) Combining her education with her passion, Sanaa now owns and operates an online boutique that offers clients the highest quality collections of Pakistani and Indian Bridal, Groom, Formal and Causal designer wear. “We live in a world full of wonderful electrical gadgets and technological advancements. There is not a single day that passes by where we don’t see someone walking down the streets without something electrical in their hand. Who wouldn’t pay to wear designer clothing just by doing what they already do, browse and click and have it delivered at their door steps within weeks?”

COVER STORY
Pakistani culture and fashion is praised and in demand. With over six different ethnic groups, Pakistan’s fashion industry has managed to keep up the trends each year despite their national matters. Husn-e-Afza also offers designer jewellery for a project dedicated to Children Cancer Foundation Pakistan Trust. All proceeds go towards building the New Children Cancer Hospital where treatment will be provided regardless of monetary ability, and will also serve as a center for human resource development, clinical trials and research to bring about a real change in pediatric oncology in Pakistan. And Sanaa does not want to stop there, “My plan is to be able to open some boutiques and retailers across the globe and possibly make this a Franchise with the same high end of quality and affordability for our clients. “

ABOUT THE DESIGNER: ARMOIRE’s designer, Evon Tan, moved back from Melbourne, Australia, after her studies in Chemical Engineering. Her travels to fashion capital cities such as London, Paris and Milan, ignited a strong desire in her to engineer the perfect dress. am a woman of renaissance... love anything that has to do with art. I am fascinated by Nature, Felines, Egyptology, exploring diffrerent styles culturesgenres...and most of my creativity is inspired by the wonderful diverse city of London itself... Fantasy, Asian, Arabic and theatrical influences...I was born in the 80’s so working with and combining conflicting styles and making a bold statement comes naturally. I do tend to initiate my own shoots... Creative/Art Directing, hairstyling, fashion styling, themed base conceptual ideas, demonstrated in my portfolio are mine...so I am always happy to work with clothing designer, wardrobe stylist and funky creative photographers...and love to calibrate with like minded passionate individuals who strive to differ from the rest. Majority of my clientèle is bridal, I enjoy playing a big part in the brides big day, sharing the responsibility of making sure the client experiences the best service as possible not only in terms of make-up services but also being a emotional support to the bride as it will be a memory that the bride will look back at and cherish, so I have been fortunate to have been part of many brides lives from various background as well as predominately South Asian Brides. I also have been fortunate to have worked closely with leading couture bridal wear designers both western and eastern designers, and leading fashion events where I have had to explore the fashion sector beyond make-up artistry and successfully offering services as a art director and stylist and now currently working towards photography. I am not afraid of experimenting and fusing different cultures and art, residing in London I am part of a very diverse community I am always willing to take on new challenges and gaining new experiences and additions to my portfolio...I can cater my services to suit anybody wether its traditional to contemporary or for those that are daring to be different.

ALIAS Film World Premiere at Hot Docs
Photos: FatLabs
Composer Vikas Kohli of FatLabs works with award-winning director Michelle Latimer The film ALIAS had it’s world premier at the prestigious Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival On Friday, Apr 26th 2013. ALIAS, the feature documentary by Michelle Latimer, looks directly at the lives of Toronto rappers, who’ve sprung from hoods that have turned into angry “territories.” There she found stories that belied the stereotypes, young rappers using the form as an alternative to gang life, and as a possible escape. And their expression - while a stark and realistic portrait of Canada’s growing underclass is anything but an endorsement of thug life. “Scoring for ALIAS was different than any other project I worked on. From the outset, director Michelle Latimer and I discussed how what I composed needed to be subtle, nuanced and weave through the hip-hop that permeates the film. In the end, the musical contrast is striking and the honesty of the people followed is powerful,” comments composer Vikas Kohli of FatLabs.
Vikas Kohli of FatLabs is the first composer to receive the Trailblazer Award from the ReelWorld Film Festival, the first composer to receive a Voice Achievers Award and he also received a MARTY award from the Mississauga Arts Council. He has composed and produced music for award-winning Canadian recording artists, award-winning Indian recording artists, awardwinning Canadian and American films, and major motion Bollywood films. Kohli sits on the advisory board of the Blackwood Art Gallery, the Board of Directors of the Art Gallery of Mississauga and has been profiled on ET Canada, CBC The National, The Globe & Mail, The Toronto Star, The Hindustan Times, MSN, AOL, Yahoo, and Zee News. Born in Nepean (Ottawa), Kohli began playing guitar and painting at fine arts school before receiving his Honors Degree in Mathematics & Philosophy from the University of Toronto, his MBA from the Schulich School of Business and his CFA. Kohli now lives in Mississauga, Canada. MAY / JUNE 2013 57

Being the best
58 MAY / JUNE 2012
rom a tender age of eight Nick Pandya was deeply surrounded by music. His Passion for music grew day by day with constant support from his family and friends, and has now bought him to this stage, where he is recognized by several for his musical talent. Nick Pandya started of his musical journey by learning the tabla. He learnt tabla for 12 years, and eventually started getting vocal training. The graph of his musical career started growing exponentially when he entered a singing contest in Toronto called the Swar Sadhana Vocal contest, which was judged by the Indian classical Legend Sri. Pandit Jasraj. Winning 2nd place not only made Nick work harder, but it also showed him that with proper support and great mentoring he could achieve the highest stages in music. After this contest Nick, was well known in his community as well as nationally. Nick has performed on various stages such as Desifest, Masla Mehndi Masti. Nick has also performed with several Bollywood Playback singers one of them being Chinmayi, along with that Nick has sung on one of the biggest stages known as IIFA Awards (International Indian Film Academy Awards) where he opened up for Bipasha Basu. Nick categorizes his career as a dream and believes it has just begun. He is ever so great full to his family and friends for the on-going support and love they provide him day in and day out. One of the most important things that Nick believes in is coming second, Why? because he believes that if he is always second he would always want to work harder and harder to achieve his prime goal of being the best at what he does.

obert Couturier made design history in 1987 when the billionaire financier Sir James Goldsmith, who could have engaged any architect and decorator in the known world to do his bidding, followed his legendary instincts and entrusted the 32-year-old Couturier with what would amount to the single greatest private commission of modern times: the re-conception, execution, and continuous embellishment – down to the last gilded detail – of Goldsmith’s 20,000-acre kingdom on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. Two decades later, the New York-based Couturier maintains his place at the top of his profession, continuing to execute grand-scale commissions in the U.S., Europe, South America, and Russia. His

name, included in Architectural Digest’s prestigious annual list of the best decorators and architects in the world, has become synonymous with continental and international style. Décor, Couturier believes above all else, must be appropriate to the architecture, to the clients, and to the setting. The last thing he sees his interiors as are stage sets – rather, they are spaces for living people to move through and function in. And, in fact, they work superbly. Couturier has contributed to major architecture and design books. He lectures widely at galleries and at arts and antique fairs, and participates in charitable and design-industry events. His work has been featured in such publications as Architectural Digest, Vogue, Vanity Fair,

All in all, Robert Couturier can be said to lend a sense of connoisseurship, imagination, and even experimentation to the traditional design landscape. As he likes to say himself, recalling the rich interiors in which he spent his childhood and youth, “It is to both grander and greater ends that one invents when one can start with one’s own past.” MAY / JUNE 2013 63

& Rainbow Chard Curry I wanted a new recipe for the fresh Swiss chard growing on my balcony, so I came up with this quick and easy dish that my guests really enjoyed.
“Rainbow” chard is Swiss chard with yellow, white, and red stems. Makes 4-6 servings. 1 tbsp good oil 1 tsp whole cumin seeds 4 cups (1L) cauliflower florets ½ tsp ground turmeric chard ¼ tsp cayenne, to taste 1 tsp good salt to taste ½ tsp ground black pepper 4 cups (1L) chopped Swiss or rainbow chard • To reduce Pitta: use 2 cups (500 ml) 1 tbsp lemon juice
In a large pot on medium-high, heat oil. Drop 1 cumin seed into the oil to test; if it sizzles and turns white, add rest of cumin seeds and let sizzle for 30 seconds. Then add cauliflower, turmeric, cayenne, salt, and pepper. Toss to coat well with spices. Add 1 tbsp water. Reduce heat to medium, cover pot with tightly fitting lid, and cook for 3–4 minutes. Add chard and cook for another 3–4 minutes, covered, so vegetables can cook in their own steam. When cauliflower is tender, remove from heat. Stir in lemon juice and serve. MARCH / APRIL 2013 65

For a tridoshic variation that reduces Kapha, Pitta and Vatta: Omit cocoa and add ¼ tsp ground cardamom and 2–4 drops of rosewater.

This is as tasty as it is nourishing and uses only one bowl. Make it about 11hours before serving so the chia seeds have time to expand.

In this all-vegetarian cookbook,
Amrita Sondhi, author of The Modern Ayurvedic Cookbook , provides new twists on traditional Ayurvedic recipes that are also inspired by the growing popularity of whole grains (quinoa, spelt, and barley) and raw foods. Recipes include modern interpretations of Indian cuisine (spicy paneer zucchini kabobs and mango & coconut kulfi), and Ayurvedic spins on vegetarian fare
(barley rainbow pilaf and raw zucchini hummus). The book also includes yoga and breathing exercises easily done at home or at work, full-colour recipe photos, and information on sprouting/ fermenting techniques and backyard gardening. The Tastes of Ayurveda offers simple and delicious ways to achieve a more healthful, energetic, and serene life. MAY / JUNE 2013 67

Montréal
F
or the person looking to travel with an environmentally responsible conscience, Montréal is not only a logical choice, but also a dynamic and out of the ordinary metropolitan area. Urban and eco-friendly? That’s right. When it comes to green initiatives, Montréal is a trailblazer. First and foremost, Montréal is the first urban centre and seventh global destination to sign the National Geographic Geotourism Charter, underlying its commitment to the preservation, conservation and stewardship of its historic, cultural and natural assets. It has become increasingly easy to visit Montréal in an eco-responsible manner. The 560 km (350 miles) of cycling paths throughout the city are the pride of Montrealers and the reason why so many citizens have adopted the bicycle as a mode of transport both to work and to play. With plans to further expand its bike path network, the city has been hailed at the “best cycling city in North America” by the American magazine Bicycling.

Whether it’s through simple gestures or through major projects, businesses are implicated in protecting the environment and respecting the values of community, a sentiment that can be appreciated across the island.
