anish’s collection is inspired by the princely states of India in the 1930s, an era celebrating opulence. The silhouettes and embroidery echo the splendour of Indian - European architecture. By striking a unique balance between traditional Indian craftsmanship and the classic minimalism of the west, Manish lends elegance and charm to this collection. The cross-cultural ties created a very unique genre of fashion and culture - an old-world mix of traditional Indian motifs, and the influences of British culture on the affluent Indian Lifestyle. French shoe designer Christian Louboutin worked closely with Manish Malhotra for his Couture show, using existing shoe designs which were specially fabricated to complement the collection. The models walked the ramp in these stunning creations, which were a striking mélange of Manish Malhotra’s craftsmanship and Louboutin’s designs. Everyone in attendance was on their feet with applause as Deepika Padukone walked the ramp in a beautiful blue lehenga, along with Shahrukh Khan to support Manish. The front row of the completely packed show included Sunanda Tharoor, Shashi Tharoor, JJValaya, Amaan & Ayaan, Rohit Shetty, Sheetal Mafatlal, amongst several others.
Speaking about his inspiration for the Couture collection, Manish said, “In the 1930s, India was a country trying to find her voice. It was the age of opulence, and of affluence. Even as
viceroys conducted matters of state, kings, queens, princes and princesses ruled over their own domains. The cross-cultural ties created a very unique genre of fashion and culture, which I am very inspired by. Whether in the fabrics, royalty and the ruling class favoured, and the silhouettes they wore, or in the architecture, and the art, there was cross-pollination at work. While designing this collection, I could imagine a Maharani, dressed in a layered lehenga ensemble, embellished with antique gold, walking down a corridor with her entourage, to meet the Viceroy in his regalia. Their conversations, conducted through a screen, echoed in my mind.” The collection includes all of his signature styles, crafted using rich textiles like velvet and old textured silks. Sculpted silhouettes of the ensembles are further accentuated by the use of flowing and feminine fabrics, adorned with antique gold embroidery and dull silver thread work by craftsmen. Manish has also beautifully incorporated Chantilly lace, which is reminiscent of that time, and reflects the old-world charm of opulent India. The palette of this 1930s-inspired couture collection is coloured with saturated, jewel like shades and tints of red, royal blue, mustard, olive, beige and ochre, which adds to the vintage appeal of the outfits. umbai: ‘Reflections’, the Festive collection by Manish Malhotra, was showcased at the opening of Lakmé FashionWeek Fall/Winter 2013, on 22nd August at the Grand Hyatt. The front row of a completely packed show included Karishma Kapoor, Kajol, Karan Johar, Shabana Azmi, Neha Dhupia, Ayushman Khurana, Farah Khan, Jacqueline Fernandes, Urmila Matondkar, Sanjay Kapoor, Maheep Kapoor, Ayan Mukherjee, Marc Robinson, Tanisha Mukherjee, Sheetal Mafatlal, Farah Ali Khan, Zarine Khan and Devita Saraf amongst several others. Speaking about his collection, Manish said, “‘Reflections’, my festive collection for this season, is high on colour and on new silhouettes, while it plays with the concept of lightness of being with celebration in mind. To me, a festive occasion is a wonderful blend of tradition, culture, rituals, colours, and intensity of emotions. Time-honoured practices come together with special occasions and new traditions to create happy times. It is this melding of the old and the new that has inspired ‘Reflections’.”

colours, saturated hues, and Manish’s signature thread-work and custom-created Zari work from Kashmir. ‘Reflections’, therefore, marries the best of India’s sartorial heritage, with youth, and sparkle. Manish Malhotra has created a trendsetting new silhouette - the Ghagra Pant, which is a fusion of the Sharara and the classic pant. This new creation is a fun and very stylish alternative to the Lehenga. Manish has also reinterpreted the traditional Rajasthani
koti silhouette to create a Koti top, which can be worn with Saris, or Ghagras. This inventive and vivacious collection by Manish Malhotra offers several options for a bride and her entourage to choose from, for pre-wedding ceremonies and festivities. ‘Reflections’ by Manish Malhotra, along with his diffusion line for men and women, will be available at his new store in Mumbai.

orn in Mumbai, India, Dilshad Burman was surrounded by its glamour and energy and grew up with a passion for music, film, television and the performing arts. While studying for her degree in English Literature at Mumbai University, Dilshad joined 93.5 RED FM at just 19 years old! Producing a 4 hour talk radio show introduced her to the world of media production, writing and editing. She was heavily involved in theatre throughout her university years. Clubbing her love for a visual medium with her passion for broadcast media, she went on to study Television Broadcasting at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario in 2005. Thereafter, having completed her diploma in Broadcasting, Dilshad moved to the bright lights of Toronto for a news editing internship with Omni Television in 2007. Even though she left a lasting impression on the editing and production teams, Omni was not quite ready for her. Dilshad went on to secure a Video Technician position at Westbury National Show Systems in Scarborough, thereby attaining her postgraduation work permit and taking the first steps to setting up life in Canada. As a Video Technician, Dilshad worked on all the video related aspects of LIVE events. This included prepping equipment at the company’s warehouse and loading heavy cases onto trucks, setting up the gear and operating cameras, projectors and switchers. For close to three years Dilshad did everything from run cable to liaise with clients,
with a steady goal of establishing herself in the country and attaining her Permanent Residency. On July 1st 2010, she did exactly that, attaining landed immigrant status on Canada Day, which also happens to be her birthday! Slowly but surely, Dilshad worked her way back to Omni Television. Training after hours at the channel , she updated her editing skills and joined the team as a freelance news editor. Although she thoroughly enjoyed the fast paced newsroom environment, behind the scenes was not where she was meant to be. Her passion for performance and natural charisma in front of the camera impressed the producers at Omni and transported her to the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards red carpet in 2011- her first ever LIVE television experience.
Amid frenzied fans and Bollywood big wigs, Dilshad got her first taste of hosting and reporting. Needless to say her performance at the IIFA’s made a huge impression! The ease with which she interacted with the likes of Cuba Gooding Jr. and Shah Rukh Khan brought her numerous accolades and as she says herself “proved my mettle in a trial by fire!” A few months later Omni Television launched V-Mix; Canada’s first national TV show covering contemporary South Asian artists, while also providing indie Canadian musicians and amateur performers a platform to showcase their talent. They didn’t look too far for the host of this new show, as they already had an inhouse powerhouse! Dilshad took the reigns as host of V-Mix when it officially launched in October 2011. Since then the show has amassed a huge fan base and was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award in 2012. Dilshad has received rave reviews in the press and has graced the covers of several magazines including Canadian Immigrant, Desi News and South Asian Generation Next. She has also been featured in the London Free Press, Fusia Magazine & South Asian Woman Magazine among several others. V-Mix is currently in its third season and airs every Sunday at 4:00pm (ET) on Omni2. Dilshad brings you the latest on the multicultural music, arts and culture scene with her own unique flair, stellar fashion sense and quirky personality! SEPT. / OCT. 2013 25

FRAGRANCE CHOICE
Hayari A Singular Perfume Collection from Paris Brings its Couture Scentsation to the States.
P
aris, the city of romance and fashionable women, will share the newest collection of fragrances with women in the United States. The fragrances come from the couture house of Nabil Hayari. Designed by one of the most distinctive Parisian fashion designers, the collection of three singular fragrant perfumes has been created for women who are drawn to the allure of elegant scents and who appreciate the concept of exclusivity. Luxury defines Hayari Couture Creations. In his collections Hayari blends chic and
elegance that celebrity patrons have sought out for their red carpet entrances. Nabil Hayari is regarded as the quintessential designer and now he links this glamour with the creation of breathtaking perfumes that capture the essence of his luxury brand. The collection of Hayari perfumes has already become a favored scent of European women. Now, just in time for the holiday gift giving season, three distinctive and exclusive Hayari fragrances have landed in the United States. Each of the three scents “Goldy,” “Only For Her,” and “Broderie,” has its own unique personality. Each scent is numbered and bottled in faceted flacons, capped with glass dome toppers. Etched on the front of each flacon is the distinctive gold “H” ribbon logo. The fragrances are cradled in specially designed flip open boxes that emulate a blossoming flower. To expand his prestigious fashion label, Nabil Hayari made an entrance into the world of perfumes in 2010. His first inaugurated perfume is “Only For Her.” It is seductive, dynamic and sparkling. An ultra feminine scent this original fragrance has been created by Robertet’s Sidonie Lancesseur (the nose behind 3 of By Killian’s perfumes). Its elegant scent releases a generous sun-kissed grapefruit fragrance. It is enhanced by a blend of Egyptian jasmine, peony and
magnolia. Beneath these fresh notes, there are hints of the warm and sensual fragrances of sandalwood, patchouli and vanilla. “Goldy Perfume” reflects a warm powdery and woody glow. Robertet’s Dorothee Piot is the nose behind this scent. It is a special blend of white jasmine and orange blossom with base notes of sandalwood, musk and cedar. “Goldy” has a hither-to power drawing immediate attention to the woman wearing it. “Broderie,” from Hayari Paris, has been inspired by embroidery and lace, which Mr. Hayari incorporates into his fashion collections. The perfume exudes a lovely fragility. The fragrance is feminine and elegant which is expressed through an element of lily and gardenia extract. These delicate fragrances are completed by the powerful and sensual fragrances of sandalwood, amber and patchouli resulting in an unforgettably fragrant experience. It has been created by Sidonie Lancesseur of Robertet. Today women have a wardrobe of perfumes they wear for each time of day, occasion or activity. Much like a collection of fine jewelry that adorns a fashion look, the Hayari trio of perfumes will be a must-have accessory to add to an elegant woman’s style. Hayari Perfumes are available exclusively at C. O. Bigelow in NewYork City, NY.

BODY & SOUL
You’ll find a different world on the other side of the golden doors.
TheGolden Door Spa
Escondido, California
O
n Sunday, January 4, 1959, a group of 12 women arrived at a converted, Spanish adobe-style motel, stepped through a pair of jeweled ‘golden’ doors, and into history. They paid approximately $250 $300 for a weeklong spa experience and were the first guests to visit what is known today as the acclaimed Golden Door. Tens of thousands of guests would follow these women, eager to experience the first week-long spa program to combine fitness and beauty.
44 SEPT. / OCT. 2013
The vision of Deborah Szekely – now widely acknowledged as the founder of the modern spa movement – the Golden Door was originally conceived as an intimate and luxurious sister spa to the Rancho La Puerto fitness resort in Mexico (founded by Szekely with her late husband, Professor Edmond Szekely in 1940). Early Golden Door guests included Hollywood stars such as Debby Reynolds, Gloria Swanson, Zsa Zsa and Eva Gabor, movie director Stanley Kramer, author and philosopher Alduous Huxley and fashion designer Bill Blass.
In 1975 the Golden Door moved to its current location just one mile west of the original site; about 40 minutes north of San Diego. Built in the style of traditional Japanese Honjin Inns - designed to offer welcome and relaxation - the new facility was the first-ever purpose-built destination spa. Now welcoming up to 40 guests per week, the spa is dedicated to fostering a balance of mind, body and spirit through a complete, personalized well-being program that incorporates the latest therapies and technologies with proven techniques and concepts.

GOLDEN DOOR VITAMIN K AND GINKGO BILOBA PROTEIN EYE MASQUE Golden Door’s Eye Gel with Vitamin K is applied around the eyes which are then covered with eye pads made from Ginkgo Biloba. While these go to work a pressure point facial and scalp massage lulls you to deep relaxation.

LOCATIONS In addition to the original destination spa, Golden Door resort spas can be found at the following properties within the Waldorf Astoria Collection: Park City, Utah; The Boulders Resort, Carefree, Arizona; the Naples Grande Beach Resort, Naples, Florida; and the El Conquistador in Las Croabas, Puerto Rico.
The spa’s 4:1 staff-to-guest ratio ensures an incomparable level of service and attention to detail, encouraging most guests – more than 60 percent – to return time-and-time again; any guests have visited 10, 20, even 50 times. Each day of the week-long stay is customized to meet each guests specific goals; hiking, fitness classes, mind/body pursuits, educational lectures, a healthy sprinkling of fun, and soothing and reviving spa therapies are carefully scheduled to ensure each individual the perfect spa visit; enabling them to attain balance within their own lives that is at the heart of the Golden Door’s philosophy. Boot Camp provides fun and exercise in the fresh air.

ily Collins exudes elegance in Elahn Jewels while making an appearance at ITV Studios’ “Daybreak” on August 19th, 2013 in London. Prita’s “Aaja” video reflects a softer side of the Montreal born, Orlando based recording artist, pairing the beauty of Florida’s sun and shores to capture the
love song’s R&B and Hindi fusion. Prita’s “Aaja” song was produced by multi-platinum Montreal fusion artists JoSH. Prita met her “Aaja” video’s director, Omar Shaikh, at the 2011 Tampa India International Film Festival, when Prita was being featured at the festival alongside Canadian comedy superstar Russell Peters. Shaikh, based in Tampa, has worked with the likes of American rap stars Gucci Mane and Yo Gotti on his past music videos. Prita’s next Canadian performance will be in Fall 2013 as part of the cast of “Land of the Eternals”, pairing the recording artist with renowned figure skaters Elvis Stojko and Roselle Doyle at the Richmond Hill Centre For the Performing Arts, for Prita’s first foray into the world of theatre.

Aged Peppercorn Cheeze This soft cheese will impress even dairy lovers. If you’re in a rush, skip the fermentation process. Serve with dehydrated crackers, grapes, and olives. Yes, miracles do exist! Makes about 2 cups (500 mL) 2 cups (500 mL) cashews, soaked for 30 minutes or more ¼ cup (60 mL) lemon juice ½ – ¾ cup (125–185 mL) purified water, or as needed ½ tsp probiotic powder (approximately 3 plant-based probiotic capsules) ¾ tsp Himalayan salt 2–3 tsp coarsely ground peppercorns 1–2 tbsp whole peppercorn, for garnish (optional)
66 SEPT. / OCT. 2013
In a blender, blend cashews with lemon juice, water, and probiotics until smooth. Add salt and blend again. Add more water if needed to attain a smooth consistency. Note: If you don’t have a blender, in a food processor process cashews, lemon juice, and probiotics with about ½ cup [125 mL] water to make a creamy mixture. Stop processing occasionally and scrape down sides with a spatula. Texture should be thick and smooth. Pour mixture into a nut mylk bag or cheesecloth-lined colander over a bowl. Wrap cloth to cover and place a weight of about 5 lbs (2.25 kg) on top. (I use a large Mason jar filled with water.) Place in a warm location and allow to ferment for 24 hours.
The longer it ferments, the stronger and tangier the cheeze will taste. (If you want to speed up the process, place in dehydrator or infra-red sauna.) Once fermented, remove cheeze from cloth and transfer to a bowl, adding coarsely ground peppercorn, mixing until well incorporated. Place cheeze into a small ring mould and garnish with whole peppercorns and refrigerate; it will firm up as it chills. Stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator, cheeze will last up to 10 days. Variation: To develop a rind on the cheeze, place it in a mold lined with plastic wrap and dehydrate (105˚F [41˚C]) for an additional 12–24 hours.
