Cinema Fantástico

Márta Bényei (Hungria) • Nascida na Hungria. Perita com mais de 35 anos de experiência na indústria cinematográfica. Começou como especialista de mercados e compradora de direitos. Responsável pelo Departamento de Festivais do National Film Institute da Hungria desde 2004, representante-substituta da Hungria no Programa Eurimages e colaboradora do Fantasporto há décadas. Participante nas MOVIE TALKS deste ano.

Lawrence Trott (Reino Unido) • Crítico de cinema, escritor e cineasta britânico, foi director do Serviço de Audiovisual da polícia britânica durante muitos anos. Membro do júri de Cinema Fantástico. Apresenta o seu romance “Escape”, sobre a fuga de uma família curda para a Inglaterra. Participa também nas MOVIE TALKS falando sobre “Movie potential and writing movies”.

Sandra Henriques (Portugal) • Jornalista e actual editora e directora de “Fábrica do Terror”.

Luís Miguel Rosales (Espanha) • Jornalista e director do mais antigo festival de cinema da Galiza, Curtas Festival do Imaxinario, especializado em Cinema Fantástico, fundado em 1973 em Vilagarcía de Arousa (Ponte Vedra).

Secções Oficiais Semana dos Realizadores / Orient Express

Anthony Waller (Reino Unido) • Realizador e produtor de, entre várias outras produções de “An American Werewolf in Paris”, filme vencedor do Grande Prémio e Prémio do Público do festival de Gérardmer em 1998 e do filme de culto do horror, este ano exibido no Fantasporto na sua cópia restaurada 4K, “Mute Witness”.

Pedro Farate (Portugal) • Director de fotografia e realizador, foi responsável pela fotografia de vários êxitos do cinema português, nomeadamente “A Sublime Life” (2018) e “Já nada Sei”, Prémio Melhor Fotografia no Treasure Coast Festival (E.U.A.), apresentado fora de concurso no Fantasporto. Participa no programa MOVIE TALKS, no debate “Do ensino de cinema à concretização”.

Marina Anna Eich (Alemanha) • Actriz e produtora alemã, nascida em 1976, conhecida por “Break” (2009), “The Truth of Lie” (2011), exibido no Fantasporto, “Illusion” (2013), “Taste of Life” (2017) ou “Roland Reber’s Cabareth of Death” (2019).

Isabel Pina (Portugal) • Realizadora e produtora. “40 Anos do Fantasporto” é a primeira longa-metragem da realizadora que anteriormente dirigiu as curtas “Motorphobia (2014) e (In)Sanidade (2011). Membro do Júri da Semana dos Realizadores. Participa nas MOVIE TALKS no debate “Depois do filme – a encruzilhada do cinema português”.

Luís Moya (Portugal) • Realizador vencedor do Prémio do Público do Fantasporto 2022 com “Por Detrás da Moeda” e do Prémio de Cinema Português em 2013 com “Mia Mia Sudan Tamam Tamam" (2013). Participa nas MOVIE TALKS, nos debates “Do ensino de cinema à concretização” e “Depois do filme - a encruzilhada do cinema português”. Danyel Guerra (Portugal/Brasil) • Jornalista, escritor e historiador nascido no Brasil. Enquanto jornalista, trabalhou nos diários Notícias da Tarde, Jornal de Notícias e Correio da Manhã. Entre os livros publicados contam-se “Oito e Demy” (2014) e “O Português do Cinemoda” (2015).

Regina Machado (Portugal) • Regina Machado, 1988. Licenciada pela Faculdade de Belas Artes. Trabalha em produção, comunicação e programação de cinema. Faz parte da direcção do Cineclube do Porto. Em 2014 entra na Casa da Animação e, em 2018, assume a sua direcção.

A cel ebrar os 25 anos da estreia de “Darklands” de Julian Richards, filme que foi Prémio da Crítica do Fantasporto antes de receber uma série de prémios internacionais e de lançar mundialmente o seu realizador e produtor, já homenageado no Fantasporto. “Darklands” será exibido uma cópia restaurada 4K. Também com este tipo de restauro, o filme de culto “Mute Witness” de Anthony Waller, (1995) que foi Prémio Especial do Júri no Festival de Gerardmer. Waller é o realizador, entre outros, do conhecido “American Werewolf in Paris”.

THE MELCHIOR TRILOGY, THE PHILIPINE CINEMA OR THE TRIBUTES

THE FESTIVAL IS PROUD TO BRING IN ITS LINE–UP THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUES OF MODERN TIMES, NOW CREATIVELY TRANSFORMED.

From the consequences of war to the individual struggle with mental health or poverty. From the ethics in science to the difficulties of the artists and writers. From the condition of the women in the world to human trafficking. From the exploitation of old people to child abuse. From the gentrification of modern cities to the perennity of the differences in societies. These important subjects are present both in the features and shorts of the competitions and in the Retrospectives of this 43rd edition, dedicated to the Filipino Cinema of producer Ferdinand Lapuz and to the Spanish distribution Freak Agency.

Other highlight is the screening of the Estonian medieval saga “Melchior”, by stage and film director Elmo Nüganen, three extraordinary features that will please the lovers of History and “The Name of the Rose”, and fine examples of the film production capacity of Estonia. Two Tributes, both coming from the UK: the celebration of the 25 years of the release of the awarded feature “Darklands” by Julian Richards, and “Mute Witness”, a thriller by Anthony Waller.

Russell Owen, 104’ (G.B.) – v.o. leg. port. Um dos melhores exemplos recentes do horror britânico. Perdido de dor pela morte da sua mulher que estava grávida, Erik Black volta à remota terra natal, aceitando um trabalho como pastor. A paisagem agreste irá curá-lo. Mas o seu esconderijo perfeito cedo se torna um pesadelo a que não pode fugir quando um espírito vingativo o segue e o vai confrontar com a sua própria sanidade. Com Tom Hughes, actor da série de televisão “Victoria” (Prince Albert), e Greta Scacchi de “Brideshead Revisited”, actriz em cerca de 100 filmes. “Shepherd” estreou no BFI London Film festival. Considerado pela crítica inglesa um dos 5 melhores filmes do ano.

The harsh, bleak environment will heal him. But his perfect hideaway soon becomes as inescapable nightmare when a vengeful spirit forces him to confront his own sanity. With Tom Hughes who played Prince Albert in the TV series “Victoria”) and Greta Scacchi (“Brideshead Revisited” and almost 100 film performances). Owen's latest feature, “Shepherd” premiered at the 2021 BFI London Film festival. Considered by the British Critics as one of the best features of the year.

Jesse Thomas Cook, 105’ (Can) – v.o. leg. port. Uma mulher empresária com a mania do controle pede ajuda a um pseudo-detective perito em cultos em declínio, para libertar o marido das garras de um grupo de “bem-estar”. Mas o marido sente-se tão bem que não quer voltar para ela. O cinema de comédia com horror à mistura, com grande sentido de humor e belas interpretações.

A manager-summoning control freak Kallie attempts to rescue her husband from the grip of the people in a “wellness centre” with the help of a washed-up cult buster. But her husband is feeling so good that he does not want to return to her. Comedy and horror meet with a great sense of humour and fine acting.

Quando uma mulher que desconhece lhe bate à porta, força a entrada como se o conhecesse e não se quer ir embora, a sua sanidade vai ser posta em causa ao decidir plagiar um livro do pai. Com um belo argumento do realizador Paul Wilkins e de Guy Free, com Luke Mably, o actor de “28 Days Later” de Danny Boyle, e Andrea Deck de “Homeland” e “The Crown”. Selecção do FrightFest (Londres).

A writer in a creative crisis returns to his family house in the country only to find his childhood traumas, especially related to his deceased father. When a woman knocks at his door, acts as if he knows her well and seems never to leave, his sanity is going to be put to the test as he decides to usurp his father’s writings. With a fine screenplay by director Paul Wilkins and Guy Free, the films counts with Luke Mably, the actor of “28 Days Later” by Danny Boyle, and Andrea Deck from “Homeland” and “The Crown” reputation. Alyson returns with her husband and baby to her childhood home. Soon they become prey of several phenomena and the memories of her abusive and violent parents. One of the best horror films of 2022, in the tradition of Argento or Fulci.

Convenience Story

Satoshi Miki, 95’ (Jap) – v.o. leg. port. Um argumentista em crise, abandona o cão da namorada num campo para não ter de tratar dele. Arrependido, volta ao sítio onde o deixou, mas o cão desapareceu. Entra então numa loja de conveniência de uma estação de serviço que fica perto. Uma realidade paralela o espera, assim como uma mulher casada que vai desbloquear a sua criatividade. Uma história da imaginação muito original e inesperada.

A screenwriter in a creative block abandons his girlfriend’s dog in a field far away so that he doesn’t have to take care of it. Soon repenting, he goes back to the place where he left it but the dog is no longer there. Nearby is a convenience store in a gas station. A parallel reality awaits him. Meeting a married woman is going to set his creativity free again. A story of the imagination presented in a very original and unexpected form.

Narcosis

Martijn de Jong, 118’ (Hol) – v.o. leg. port. Filme candidato a nomeação aos Óscares pela Holanda, vencedor do International Panorama no Festival de Cairo, Melhor Filme no Netherlands Film Festival e Prémio do Público no festival de Thessaloniki. Uma mulher perde o marido e tem de lidar com o facto de o corpo nunca ter sido encontrado. Lidar com os dois filhos e as dificuldades económicas levam-na a reatar a sua actividade como vidente mas as escolhas não são fáceis. Com um olhar seguro sobre a perda e uma excelente interpretação de Thekla Reuten, a actriz de “Marionette”, apresentado no Fantasporto de 2021 onde venceu o Prémio de Melhor Actriz, “Narcosis” é a primeira longa-metragem do realizador.

This is the Dutch candidate to the Oscars, the winner of the Cairo International Festival, the Netherlands Film Festival Best Film Award and the Audience Award of the Thessaloniki Film Festival. A woman loses her husband prematurely and has to deal with her and her children’s grief as his body has not been found. Coping with her children’s questions and a lot of economic difficulties take her to resume her job as a medium. But her choices are not easy. An absolutely top performance by actress Thekla Reuten, the actress of “Marionette” presented in Fantasporto 2021 and for which she was the winner of the Best Actress Award. First feature by this director.

Life of Mariko in Kabukicho

Eiji Uchida, Shinzô Katayama, 117’ (Jap) – v.o. leg. port. Filme vencedor do White Raven do Festival de Cinema Fantástico de Bruxelas, é também uma deliciosa rede de histórias que fazem lembrar clássicos do cinema como “ET” ou “Basket Case”. Em tom de comédia, seguimos as vidas dos clientes de um café em Kabuchiko. Extra-terrestres, uma investigação do FBI, amores estranhos, e alguns assassinatos são os temas. O elo de todas estas histórias é Mariko, a dona do café que também é detective.

Winner of the White Raven Award at the Brussels Film Festival, this film is a network of stories, reminding us of cult classics such as “ET” or Basket Case”. In a comedic tone, we follow the customers of a cafe in Kabuchiko and we get to watch stories of each individual. Aliens, FBI investigation, strange love and murders are some of the themes revealed by this film. The link to all of these characters is Mariko, who owns the bar, but also works as a detective.

Karim Ouelhaj, 100’ (Bel) Cenas eventualmente chocantes – v.o. leg. port. Os irmãos Martha e Felix vivem numa casa grande e velha que lhes foi deixada pelo pai, o notório Carniceiro de Mons. Além desta herança, Martha tenta proteger o irmão que é, como o pai, um serial killer. Abusada no trabalho, Martha tem de encontrar o equilíbrio entre a violência de Felix e os traumas na sua própria vida. Filme vencedor do importante Prémio Cheval Noir no Festival Fantasia (Canadá) é mais um bom exemplo do moderno cinema belga de horror. Excelente interpretação de Eline Schumacher, no seu primeiro papel no cinema.

Brother and sister, Martha and Felix, live in a big old house which was left to them by their father, the notorious Mons Butcher. Apart from this inheritance, Martha feels she has to protect her brother who, like their father, is a serial killer. Abused at work, Martha tries to find the balance between Felix’ violence, his madness and the traumas of her very own life. This film won the important Cheval Noir Award in the Fantasia Festival (Canada) and is another fine example of modern Belgian horror cinema. Great acting by Eline Schumacher in her first role on film.

Demigod: the Legend Begins

Quando ignora o conselho do seu mestre Eight-Toed Qilin, o novato das artes marciais Su Huan-Jen é apanhado no meio de uma perigosa luta pelo poder. Metido numa conspiração que mesmo o seu mestre não consegue resolver, Su HuanJen tem de reverter a maré e fazer parar o maléfico senhor de uma vez por todas. A excelência da animação num filme feito de beleza e artes marciais. Seleccionado para o Festival de Neuchatel onde ganhou o Prémio do Público e no Festival de Bucheon e mais 6 festivais. Foi ainda um dos mais premiados filmes no festival de Taipé.

Ensnared in a conspiracy that even his own master cannot escape from, Su Huan-jen must turn back the tide and stop the evil mastermind once and for all. The excellence of animation in a film of beauty and martial arts. Selection of the Neuchatel Festival where it wins the Audience Award, and also in Bucheon and 6 other festivals. It was also one of the most awarded features at the Taiwan Film Festival.

17:00 RETRO Freak Agency Retrospectiva

A Freak é uma agência espanhola de distribuição de filmes para festivais fundada em 2000. Durante todos estes anos, colaborámos com os criadores cinematográficos e produtores para impulsionar a exposição dos seus filmes no mercado internacional. A colaboração do Fantasporto com a Freak data de há muito. No festival já passaram várias das suas curtas-metragens na competição de cinema fantástico. Vindo da Agência Freak passa no Fantasporto 2023 na competição Cinema Fantástico a curta-metragem “El Umbral”. O Fantasporto agradece a excelência desta selecção, é de visão obrigatória para todos os amantes do fantástico.

Freak is a Spanish festival distribution agency founded in 2000. During all these years we have collaborated with film creators and producers to boost the exposure of their films in the international market. The cooperation between Freak Agency and Fantasporto comes from a long way back. Some of its shorts have been competing here. And this year we have “El Umbral” in the Fantasy short competition. Fantasporto thanks Freak for the excellency of this selection, a must for all lovers of fantasy.

Hotel • José Luis Alemán, 11’ 24’’ (2011) Exausto depois da travessia do deserto, um homem entra num hotel vazio onde pode comer e beber à vontade. O horror espera-o.

Exhausted after crossing the desert, a man enters an empty hotel where he can eat and drink as he pleases. Horror waits for them.

El Cuento/Bedtime Story

Lucas Paulino, Ángel Torres, 9’ 41’’ (2019) Uma mãe com dois filhos pequenos no limite. Do outro lado da rua, uma bruxa vigia-os. O conto para adormecer que a mulher lhes conta quando se deitam explica tudo. A woman with two small children on the verge of a breakdown. From the other side of the street, a witch observes. The tale the mother tells them says it all.

A Little Taste • Victor Catalá, 5’12’’ (2019) Uma menina corre na floresta quando encontra outra menina. “Há uma bruxa na floresta”, diz-lhe, “que come crianças. Porque não foges?”

A girl runs in the forest and she finds another girl. “There is a witch in the forest” she says “who eats children. Why don’t you run?”

Llengua amb tàperes / Tongue with Capers

Uma mulher cozinha mas faltam-lhe as alcaparras. Sai à rua mas os perigos são muitos. 90% da população está transformada em zombies.

A woman is cooking but she has no capers. She goes out to get them but the dangers in the street are many – 90% of the inhabitants are zombies.

Um homem lambe a cola de centenas de envelopes, fecha-os e coloca-os de lado. Todos os bons trabalhadores serão recompensados, dizem-lhe. Mas como explicar as transformações do seu corpo?

A man licks the glue of hundreds of envelopes, closes and puts them aside. All good workers will be rewarded, he is told. But how to explain the changes in his body?

La Noria • Carlos Baena, 12’ 54’ (2018)

Um rapazinho monta uma roda de parque de diversões de brincar mas não consegue. Tudo desmorona. Uma das peças vai para debaixo da cama, quadros da família caem e horrendas criaturas perseguem-no. O que querem? Uma história de medo e ternura. Uma das melhores curtasmetragens fantásticas de sempre.
