Vergnet incorporates RotaBolt tension control Vergnet is now fitting Rotabolt® tension control technology on its unique GEV HP wind turbines. The company is using RotaBolt fasteners on the main structural joint where the two halves of the turbine nacelle are joined.

V

ergnet’s design allows the main turbine to be quickly disassembled into two halves so that the upwind nacelle section, complete with rotors, can be lowered to the ground and easily secured. This can be either as a protective measure in extreme weather conditions, or for much quicker service and maintenance. Each turbine uses thirty M90 RotaBolts on the main nacelle structural joint. The fasteners assure the integrity of this critical joint because they achieve and accurately maintain the correct joint tension through the precise measurement technology built into each bolt.

Big price increases for industrial adhesives Henkel has announced it is applying price increases ranging from 10 to 25 percent on in its industrial adhesives, which includes brands such as Loctite, Terosen, Technomelt and Hysol.

T

he increase is attributed to “ongoing escalation of raw material costs over the last 15 months, especially affecting oil and natural gas based products.” Henkel goes on to say: “Continual spikes in global demand, coupled with capacity constraints in primary chemical,

rosin, and resin feed stocks, have further tightened supply and driven raw material prices upward.” Henkel expects to have to apply further price increases in the following product categories: hotmelts, polyurethane, water based adhesives and surface treatment products.

Nord-Lock secures Ginaf trucks in Dakar Ginaf Rally Power recently competed with two trucks in the 2011 edition of Dakar, which took place in South America. Almost every component on the vehicles was especially built or reinforced, meaning that not many standard parts could match the requirements.

N

ord-Lock Benelux B.V. offered Ginaf improvements in bolted connections on its trucks, with applications including the chassis where Nord-Lock secured the steering mounting, engine mountings, bearing blocks, differential box front and rear chassis mounting, drive shaft bracket and cross chassis beam. Ginaf also used Nord-Lock washers to secure the bolted connections on its drive shafts, and used Nord-Lock wheel nuts - which are reusable, quick to mount, and even under stress the wedge-locking function is ensured and prevents the nut from rotating loose.

Huntsman helps build urban electric car Huntsman Advanced Materials has announced its technical involvement in an innovative project that showcases the possibilities of building a concept electric car – the ‘U-Box’ – using environmentally sustainable components.

T

he ‘U-Box’ has been designed and produced by French design company D3. While using advanced materials from its Araldite branded portfolio, Huntsman also researched and developed innovative, sustainable products for each stage of the car’s construction. This included the preparation of moulds using seamless modelling pastes and boards. It also involved new concepts for developing different automotive components using stereolithography and rapid manufacturing resins as well as the use of encapsulation solutions for the car’s electronic components. As a production model, the ‘U-Box’ could be used as an industrial site vehicle or for park and ride hospitality services at events. Böllhoff offers blind fastener solution High speed blind fastening technology has been adapted to meet the critical strength and contamination-free assembly requirements of an innovative lightweight solar panel.

C

onstruction of the solar collector frame requires the secure fixing of an outer frame from one side only, without pre-punching or drilling to avoid compromising the structural integrity of the main frame. Additionally the fastening technique has to work in combination with a silicone adhesive sealant and avoid any risk of contamination. Working in partnership with energy efficient water heating systems manufacturer Clage GmbH, of Lüneburg, Germany, international fastening and assembly technology specialist Böllhoff, tailored its RIVTAC ® joining system to meet these specific production requirements. The flat plate solar energy collector delivers very high energy yields - in excess of 80% - and weighs only 32.5kg due to its light weight geometry and materials. An aluminium frame is added as a final step in the manufacturing process to optimise strength and protect the solar cells and service connections. This is securely fastened at each corner with two RIVTAC ® fasteners.

Fastener + Fixing Technology

Focusing on where the impact is greatest Fasteners may not be everything, but almost nothing works without fasteners: electric razors, lawn mowers, tractors, trains, computers and printers – all of them products which are taken for granted in everyday lives, but they only work as well as their fasteners allow them to. Fasteners usually work in the background which means they are hardly noticed – and yet, despite that, they are a key product. One might almost say that they are a natural resource like electric power or water. If they flow erratically production slows down, if they don’t flow at all production breaks down. The most expensive fastener is the one that’s missing.

O

nly a steady flow of high quality fasteners that never dries up guarantees efficient production and maintenance. Thus it is not only a question of the product’s quality, logistics and engineering are also imperative for success. High-quality fasteners ensure that products last longer. Bossard, founded in the small town of Zug, Switzerland, is a fastening technology and logistics company which has some 1,500 employees in more than 50 locations worldwide. It has a customer base comprising of both local and multinational industrial companies, making it one of the market leaders in fastening technology. Bossard’s sophisticated logistics systems allow efficient, reliable supply and lowers warehousing costs. Also its solution-oriented engineering means that its customers can already count on cost savings during the planning, design, and development phases. Here the company describes how its worldwide business model which comprises of Products, Logistics and Engineering, allows efficient and reliable supply to its customers.

Products Top quality fasteners at a fair price Bossard not only fulfils the quality criteria of the ISO9000 standard worldwide; Bossard also meets country-specific certification criteria. This releases Bossard’s customers from costintensive testing and controls. Our global quality management ensures that multinational corporations in particular can rely on Bossard to deliver the quality they expect at a time they specify – around the globe.

Up to the minute information – around the clock Our customers know where they stand at anytime and anywhere in the world. We continually update our product documentation and make it available in various languages on the Internet. Additionally, brochures and product information are revised regularly, so that customers and other interested parties are always kept up to date.

Guaranteed supply – a promise we know we can keep We can draw on a team of more than 2,600 reliable suppliers. They are selected according to stringent quality criteria. There are several sources of supply for each and every fastener. The high quality of our global procurement network ensures guaranteed supply – so that production can keep rolling. On average the fastener itself only accounts for 15 percent of the customer’s total fastening costs. The remaining 85 percent of the costs come from development, procurement, testing, inventories, and assembly logistics. This shows that cost efficiency is not primarily a question of the fastener, but of a much larger cost factor: perfect logistics and innovative engineering.

10 Issue 1 A pril 2011 • www.fastfixtechnology.com

Logistics Guaranteed supply also guarantees fewer worries Modern logistics solutions automatically trigger orders for the customer at the right time in the required quantity. Smart Bin is just such a solution, and Bossard customers throughout the world rely on it.

Smart Bin This fully automatic inventory and ordering system guarantees minimal inventory costs, perfect timing for placing orders and avoids bottlenecks due to orders that were forgotten or delayed. Smart Bin allows savings of up to 50 percent of the process costs.

Bossard Inventory Management (BIM) Bossard’s smart logistics system for all management intensive C-parts – high volume and low value products (not just fasteners) helps to cut procurement costs to a minimum.

Engineering Smart solutions for sophisticated requirements While Bossard’s logistics systems save time, cut costs, and reduce inventories, Bossard’s highly professional engineering ensures that during the planning and design stage all requirements and conditions have been taken into account in order to identify the best possible solution. Our engineering specialists are experts in all matters pertaining to the development, design, production, and assembly of innovative, productive, and high quality fastening solutions – together with the necessary processes. Our specialists support customers in their search for efficient fasteners and processes. Multifunctional fasteners can simplify production and assembly, enhance fastening and corrosion protection, improve assembly conditions and even entire manufacturing processes. High-performance corrosion protection With increasing requirements of quality, zinc lamella systems are also enjoying greater significance on the Indian market. Dr Gerhard Reusmann, managing director, Dörken MKS-Systeme GmbH & Co. KG, Herdecke, Germany

India is… the next China!” With these words Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG, described the prospects for one of the most interesting future global economic areas in November 2010. The fact that India has moved from being merely a sales market to a production location can be witnessed with a brief glance at two key industries: the automobile industry and the wind energy industry. At first glance they appear to have little in common. However, for the developer and manufacturer of a micro-layer corrosion protection system there are positive parallels. When India is mentioned as an economic location, thoughts still currently turn to motorcycles and affordable cars. This image has been enhanced in recent years in particular by the Tata Nano, which caused a stir a few years back as “cheapest car in the world”. The number of cars produced in India is set to quadruple in the next ten years, according to the estimates of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. In 2009 the figure stood at 2.2 million, with this expected to reach 8.7 to 9.7 million by 2020. And yet it is not only the production volumes that are rising, quality standards, too, are on the up. More and more Western car manufacturers are setting up their own operations in India and producing high-quality models. The necessary subcontracted parts are still imported at this time, but this can change rapidly, as the example of China shows. Global players such as the automobile industry are accustomed to purchasing locally and just in time - and the subcontracting industry will respond to this pressure. Local manufacturers such as Tata and Maruti-Suzuki already have local sources; but further Western subcontracting companies will follow and set up operations in the vicinity of the production plants. This also applies to suppliers in the field of fastening and joining and - where these manufacturers do not have their own in-house coating operations - the coaters of these parts. One system for protecting the surface of connecting elements approved by all well-known automobile manufacturers worldwide is zinc lamella technology which, as has been the case in China, will have to be available locally in India in order to supply the OEMs on site.

12 Issue 1 A pril 2011 • www.fastfixtechnology.com

Change of scene The Indian market for wind energy plants is already booming and has therefore long been an attractive environment for Western companies with the corresponding know-how. In the ranking of ten largest worldwide markets for wind energy India already occupies fifth place, behind the USA, Germany, China and Spain. As it is one of the countries with the fastest economic growth in the Asian region, this trend is likely to grow even more strongly, as the demand for energy on the subcontinent is enormous. The expansion of wind energy plants is supported by the Indian government, which specified in its most recent five-year plan that energy generation in the country should increase by a further 61GW by 2012. 14GW of this should come from renewable energies, of which 10GW alone from wind energy. However, in order to achieve these

goals, the share of wind energy needs to actually double to up to 20GW - due also to the fact that the alternative regenerative energies are not yet sufficiently technologically advanced. 70 percent of wind energy plant construction in India is dominated by local providers, including Suzlon Energy, which has a market share of 47 percent. The company exports worldwide and is one of the Top 5 wind energy plant manufacturers. Zinc lamella technology has long been used here, particularly in the fastening elements for rotor blade mounting. The company is supplied by firms including the German specialist bolt manufacturer Randack, which has set up a subsidiary near Pune specifically for the purpose, producing fastening and connecting elements for wind energy plants and coating them with zinc lamella systems.

Fastener + Fixing Technology Key technology for the highest demands Zinc lamella systems, then, have long arrived on the Indian market and are the key technology for increasing requirements of quality in surface technology. Technological leader in this field is Dörken MKS-Systeme GmbH & Co. KG of Germany, which has been involved with micro-layer corrosion protection systems for over 30 years. As a rule, protective coatings are applied in coat thicknesses of between 6µm and 25µm, enabling very high corrosion durability in salt spray tests. The product portfolio of the company includes both zinc lamella basecoats and organic and inorganic sealing systems. From the very beginning these products have been free from known carcinogenic substances such as chrome (VI). They thereby fulfil the requirements of the EU Directive on End-of-Life Vehicles, which has practically forbidden the use of heavy metals in vehicle construction since 2007. Worldwide, there are currently numerous components such as fastening elements, pressed parts, clamps, springs, side-impact protection units, and brake discs that are coated by licensees using MKS systems.

coating medium in baskets and then spun to remove excess material. This process takes place in enclosed coating facilities. The necessary coating parameters such as dipping time, spinning time and tilt angle of the unit are controlled with the aid of computers. Coating and annealing typically occur several times in order to achieve adequate coverage of the material. Heavy, nonpourable parts can be coated using either the spin-coating procedure or via spraying. The spraying procedure involves both hand spraying and automated robot technology.

Tribology Thanks to its versatility, zinc lamella systems can fulfil most requirements of fastener elements. In the foreground there are high corrosion protection requirements and defined friction factors with low spreads. Maintaining the friction factor and minimising the friction factor spread on a bolt connection are indispensable in automated assembly in the field of automobile construction. But this factor is also

The coating systems Generally speaking, the coating systems comprise a basecoat and an organic or inorganic topcoat. Depending on requirements, a basecoat may also be applied without a topcoat. Both basecoat and topcoat are annealing systems, chemically combined at temperatures of below 250°C. The DELTA® -TONE 9000 and DELTA-PROTEKT® KL 100 zinc lamella systems are largely inorganic, micro-layer-forming basecoats, on the basis of zinc and aluminium flakes. The metallic nature of these enables cathodic corrosion protection. The scale-like arrangement of the flake layers creates a barrier effect that significantly retards the onslaught of corrosive media (moisture and oxygen). A subsequent organic topcoat with DELTA® -SEAL or the silicate, water-based products of the DELTA-PROTEKT® VH 300 range serve to further enhance corrosion protection considerably. In contrast to the basecoat, the topcoat is not electrically conductive. Corrosion protection can be further enhanced with the aid of the topcoat. Depending on the choice of topcoat, further requirements regarding colour, temperature resistance, chemical resistance and defined glide and friction characteristics can also be fulfilled. However, optimal corrosion protection can only be provided with very good adhesion of the coating to the object. Prerequisite for good adhesion of the coating is therefore the pre-treatment specified for the part. Common treatments here are hot alkaline degreasing, blasting and fine-crystal zinc phosphating.

Coating technique The selection of coating technique depends on the respective component. Zinc lamella coating is applied using the standard application procedures of coating technology, followed by annealing in a tunnel furnace after each coating stage. The risk of application-related hydrogen embrittlement of highstrength components does not exist, as no hydrogen is present in the coating process. The focus is upon dip-spin applications for small mass-produced parts and the spraying method for larger components. Free-flowing components are dipped in the

14 Issue 1 A pril 2011 • www.fastfixtechnology.com

decisive in wind turbine assembly, where corrosion protection requirements are joined by the need for optimal connectability of the fastening elements on the construction site. Torque is the control element in screwed assembly. A bolted connection is defined as secure when a specified pretension has been applied. The pretension of the bolted connection depends on the geometry, the strength class, the friction factors and, naturally, the tightening torque. Depending on bolt type and coating, up to 80 percent of the tightening torque is required to overcome the friction, with just 20 percent converted into pretension. The friction factor therefore secures the correct ratio of tightening torque to pretension. Excessively high friction factors reduce pretension, if the friction factors are too low, pretension is increased - with the risk that the bolt may break as a result of the permissible tension in the bolt being exceeded or by becoming loose. The setting of friction factors in connecting elements was typically achieved via subsequent greasing in the past. This is still the case with regard to trucks. In the field of cars the users employ coating systems where lubricant is already integrated into the topcoats.

Global presence The success of the zinc lamella system and its high degree of acceptance in the automobile industry have also helped to make Dörken MKS-Systeme into a global player. In order to be able to offer technical advice and support to customers worldwide on site the company has established local subsidiaries and an extensive technical network in the relevant markets. In addition to the large technology centre at company headquarters in Herdecke there are also tech centres in the USA, Brazil, South Korea and China. India is set to be a further link in this chain.

Weighing up the options Weighpack International, a manufacturer of inspection, weigh and packing systems for hardware products, was founded in 1974 and established in the Hague, the Netherlands.

T

hrough its own engineering and production facility Weighpack can offer a wide variety of equipment for the inspection, dosing and packing of technical products. Weighpack supplies advanced and reliable packing systems to suppliers of fastener products and other hardware suppliers to industry. These suppliers and manufacturers of bolts, screws and nuts supply packaged fasteners to their customers in the installation, construction and automotive sectors, amongst many other applications. Weighpack has developed a high speed packing system, especially for handling of difficult, low volume, high weight products. The heart of the system consists of a multihead combination weigher, which can be combined with an extensive range of possible ancillary equipment. Fasteners are fed from heavy duty vibratory hoppers, along a magnetic upfeed belt, into the combination weigher. Nails, screws, bolts, etc, in portions up to 2.5kg (5lbs) can be discharged with a weighing speed of up to 35 portions per minute at an extremely high accuracy. The orientation magnet is capable of paralleling product into four boxes at the same time. A double head box erector, using hotmelt adhesive, puts together the boxes at high speed. After height detection and check weighing the boxes are closed by a Weighpack hotmelt carton closer. A fully PC controlled thermo transfer labelling device assures flexible and high quality, text, logo and barcode identification. Combined with pick-in-place unit, palletiser or other ancillary equipment, a fully automatic packing line is formed. All Weighpack equipment is of modular set-up, which together forms a highly efficient packing line, controlled through a well-considered synchronisation with statistical back-up and unique code setting from product parameters allowing for a very fast changeover to another product reference.

Ruling out the buzz TR Fastenings has over 15 years experience of manufacturing and supplying tuning screws to the major global telecommunication companies and their sub-contact base.

T

uning screws are used in microwave filters and power amplifiers and are part of base station and antenna systems predominately for the mobile telecommunications network. As networks expand and data rates increase these units play a very important role. The tuning screws are generally brass with a silver plated finish and have a fine pitch thread plus a matching brass locking nut. Stainless steel is also used in certain applications. Sizes vary in both diameter, thread size, thread pitch and length depending on the application and space constraints. Different drive types such as Slot or Torx ® are most common and the ‘nose’ design of the tuning screw is also a very important feature for ensuring precise tuning capability and stable signal/power performance. New developments for faster and easier tuning functionality have led to self-locking possibilities being implemented in certain applications. TR also specialises in other fastenings associated with this industry sector such as high performance thread forming screws that clamp the lid of the aluminium filter housing to eliminate any RF leakage.

New generation of stud welding equipment Heinz Soyer Bolzenschweißtechnik GmbH has recently launched its innovative BMS-9 stud welder incorporating the PS-9 stud welding gun with innovative user guidance.

T

he BMS-9 stud welder is a small, lightweight and portable stud welding system that Heinz Soyer believes represents a new generation of stud welding equipment, which will completely revolutionise stud welding technology. Heinz Soyer points out that the BMS-9 stud welder offers many interesting technical features. For instance, for the first time it is possible for operators to view all important operating conditions with the help of an LED display using the traffic light principle on the PS-9 welding gun. The green LED display on the welding gun tells the operator when the stud welding device is ready and can be operated. Faults are signalled by means of the red LED display. The circular LED display shows the current operating status from any angle. This makes the operator’s job far easier and also considerably contributes to increasing the quality of the welded joints. “The BMS-9 stud welding equipment provides maximum portability and functionality in a compact design.”
