Retour en Principauté de Monaco Le Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo, manche inaugurale du Championnat du Monde FIA des Rallyes 2022 (WRC) quitte provisoirement Gap – Ville étape Haut-Alpine depuis 2014 – pour prendre exceptionnellement ses quartiers d’hiver à Monaco. Un recentrage en Principauté brigué par le Comité d’Organisation de l’Automobile Club de Monaco afin de pouvoir notamment orchestrer les festivités de cette 90e édition. Modifié à plus de 95% par rapport à l’année dernière, le parcours se conjugue plus encore entre conservatisme et originalité, avec des épreuves chronométrées très relevées, tracées pour l’occasion dans les départements des Alpes-Maritimes et des Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Après trois journées consacrées aux reconnaissances, du lundi 17 janvier au mercredi 19 janvier, le coup d’envoi officiel du 90e Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo est programmé jeudi 20 janvier à partir de 18h45 depuis la toute nouvelle et majestueuse Place du Casino. Au programme de cette première étape nocturne, deux épreuves spéciales bien connues de l’arrière-pays, totalisant 38,45 kilomètres chronométrés. Ainsi “Lucéram / Lantosque” (ES 1 – 15,20 km – 20h18) et “La Bollène-Vésubie / Moulinet” (ES 2 – 23,25 km – 21h31) feront d’entrée office de “Nuit du Turini 2022». Vendredi 21 janvier, cap au Nord du département des Alpes-Maritimes , pour le deuxième jour de course qui totalise 97,86 kilomètres contre le chronomètre. Avec une boucle de trois épreuves spéciales à parcourir à deux reprises au pied du Parc National du Mercantour – avec une halte intermédiaire pour un changement de pneumatiques et un regroupement à Puget-Théniers – cette journée est sans aucun doute la plus difficile à négocier. Avec au programme, les épreuves de “Roure / Beuil” (ES 3/6 – 18,33 km – 09h14 / 14h16), “Guillaumes / Péone / Valberg” (ES 4/7 – 13,49 km – 10h17 / 15h19), et “Valde-Chalvagne / Entrevaux” (ES 5/8 – 17,11 km – 11h35 / 16h37), autant dire que cette 2e étape est un véritable concentré de difficultés !

Direction les Alpes-de-Haute-Provence pour le troisième jour de course samedi 22 janvier, qui totalise 92,46 kilomètres chronométrés. La journée commence par “Le Fugeret / Thorame-Haute” (ES 9 – 16,80 km – 08h17), surnommée “ES de la Colle Saint-Michel” par les spécialistes. Place ensuite à une boucle à disputer à deux reprises, entrecoupée d’un arrêt “pneumatiques” et d’un regroupement obligatoire àDigne-les-Bains. Avec l’inédite “Saint-Jeannet / Malijai” (ES 10/12 – 17,04 km – 10h08 / 14h08) et le juge de paix “Saint-Geniez / Thoard” (ES 11/13 – 20,79 km – 11h16 / 15h16) via Authon et son redouté Col de Fontbelle, cette nouvelle journée sans assistance n’est pas de tout repos pour les concurrents. En conclusion de l’épreuve, dimanche 23 janvier, quatre chronos totalisant 67,26 kilomètres sont à disputer, sans assistance encore, dans l’arrière-pays au Nord-Ouest des Alpes-Maritimes, à proximité du département des Alpesde-Haute-Provence. Deux épreuves à parcourir deux fois, avec notamment le tout nouveau secteur chronométré de “La Penne / Collongues” (ES 14/16 – 19,37 km – 08h45 / 10h53) et celui introduit l’an dernier “Briançonnet / Entrevaux” (ES 15/17 – 14,26 km – 10h08 / 12h18) via le Col du Buis et le Val-de-Chalvagne, qui fera office de Power Stage lors du second passage. Retour prévu à Monaco vers 14h00 pour l’arrivée finale, suivi de la traditionnelle Cérémonie de Remise des Prix Place du Casino…

Welcome Back to the Principality of Monaco The Monte-Carlo Rally will open the 2022 edition of the World Rally Championship (WRC) from its homebase in Monaco, instead of the usual host-city of Gap since 2014 in the Alps. This was a wish of the Organizing Committee at Automobile Club de Monaco (ACM) in order to orchestrate the multiple celebrations of the 90th edition of the most glamourous rally in the world. As 95% of the route has been modified, compared to last year, it will be, more than ever, a perfect mix between conservatism and originality, thanks to a set of very demanding special stages selected in the AlpesMaritimes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. After three days allowed for recce, from Monday January 17 to Wednesday January 19, the official start of the 90th Monte-Carlo Rally is scheduled Thursday January 20 at 06:45pm on the fully renovated and still majestic Casino Square. This first nightly leg will be made of two very well-known stages adding up to 38.45 kilometers: “Lucéram / Lantosque” (SS1 – 15.20km – 08:18pm) and “La Bollène-Vésubie / Moulinet” (SS2 – 23.25km – 09:31pm) will make this an opening “Turini Night 2022». On Friday January 21, the crews will head for the northern part of Alpes-Maritimes for a second day of racing against the clock totalling 97.86 km of stages, in two loops of three stages next to the Mercantour National Park. There will be a mid-day pause for regrouping and changing tyres in Puget-Théniers in the middle of the toughest day of the rally. The stages on the menu will be “Roure / Beuil” (SS3/6 – 18.33km – 9:14am / 2:16pm), “Guillaumes / Péone / Valberg” (SS4/7 – 13.49km – 10:17am / 3:19pm), and “Val-de-Chalvagne / Entrevaux” (SS5/8 – 17.11km – 11:35am/4:37pm) in order to make sure that this 2nd Leg will be a tough nut to crack! Day 3 will be set in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence on Saturday January 22 for 92.46 kilometers of stages starting with “Le Fugeret / Thorame-Haute” (SS9 – 16.80km – 8:17am) nicknamed “La Colle Saint-Michel” by specialists. Then a double loop will follow, before and after a mid-day pause in Digne-les-Bains for regrouping and changing tyres. A brand new stage “Saint-Jeannet / Malijai” (SS10/12 – 17.04km – 10:08am / 2:08pm) will be paired with the ominous “Saint-Geniez / Thoard” (SS11/13 – 20.79km – 11:16am / 3:16pm) through Authon and the very demanding Col de Fontbelle, all of this without any possibility of service during the day, which will surely prove exhausting for the remaining crews. In order to conclude this 90th edition in style, on Sunday January 23, four stages totalling 67.26 kilometers will be set, without any service allowed, in the north-west of Alpes-Maritimes, close to the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Each stage will be run twice, starting with a new sector “La Penne / Collongues” (SS14/16 – 19.37km – 8:45am / 10:53am) and continuing with “Briançonnet / Entrevaux” (SS15/17 – 14.26km – 10:08am / 12:18pm) through Col du Buis and Valde-Chalvagne, where the second run will be the Power Stage. Remaining crews will then be able to rejoin Monaco around 02:00pm to cross the finish line before attending the traditional Prize Ceremony on Casino Square…

Une nouvelle ère commence !

WRC hybrid

On les attendait depuis longtemps, elles sont prêtes à bondir sur les routes du 90e Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo dont l’édition 2022 (17-23 janvier) sera donc historique à plus d’un titre : une nouvelle génération de voitures de rallye, les WRC1 hybrides, qui utiliseront exclusivement des carburants synthétiques ou écologiques, va permettre au Championnat du Monde des Rallyes (WRC) de montrer l’exemple de ce qu’il est possible de faire aujourd’hui, grâce notamment aux investissements des grands constructeurs... et au talent des ingénieurs. Trois ans d’engagement par Toyota, Hyundai et M-Sport Ford Les trois constructeurs et équipes engagés officiellement en WRC ont signé un engagement de trois ans pour développer et engager des voitures hybrides, ce qui est une belle manière de fêter le 50e anniversaire de la création du Mondial des rallyes, en 1973, à l’époque glorieuse d’Alpine-Renault et de Lancia, entre autres constructeurs mythiques. Les essais des nouvelles voitures ont continué en décembre, dans le nord de l’Europe et le sud de la France, et les pilotes ont été très favorablement impressionnés par les nouvelles machines, pour lesquelles les coûts de développement de toutes les nouvelles technologies mises en œuvre ont été partagés équitablement entre les constructeurs et la FIA, avec trois priorités évidentes: la sécurité, la gestion des coûts et le développement durable.

Annoncée en 2019, l’introduction de la technologie hybride, au plus haut niveau du rallye mondial, a abouti au feu vert définitif donné par le Conseil mondial de la FIA, autorité suprême du sport automobile. Et c’est donc dans le rallye le plus prestigieux du calendrier, le “Monte-Carlo”, que cette nouvelle ère va commencer.

“Une étape importante» pour le 50e anniversaire de la création du Mondial des rallyes... L’introduction de la technologie hybride dans la catégorie-reine du WRC est l’une des étapes les plus importantes dans toute l’histoire du rallye, et c’est une belle manière d’entamer la 50e saison du WRC. En liaison avec la FIA, les constructeurs et le promoteur, le WRC est aujourd’hui totalement engagé dans l’introduction de voitures plus respectueuses de l’environnement. La propulsion hybride fait désormais partie intégrante de l’industrie automobile. Le rallye peut servir de plateforme idéale pour la Recherche et le Développement de solutions durables, dans un championnat qui est de loin le plus exigeant au monde pour les voitures issues de la série. Parmi les initiatives qui ont été validées ces derniers mois, des carburants propres (bio-fuels) et synthétiques (e-fuels), donc non-fossiles, seront fournis aux concurrents de toutes les catégories, ainsi que des bornes de recharge clairement identifiées dans les parcs d’assistance qui pourront aussi, dans certains cas, être alimentés par des énergies alternatives.

Batterie de 3,9 kWh, puissance de 100 kW (180 Nm) Chaque nouvelle voiture de la catégorie WRC1 est équipée d’un bloc hybride doté d’une batterie de 3,9 kWh et capable de produire 100 kW (136 ch) de puissance supplémentaire, pour un couple de 180 Nm. Il est installé à l’arrière de la voiture, au niveau du train arrière, et protégé par une enveloppe en carbone ultrarésistante. Il pourra être utilisé pour procurer un surcroît de puissance pendant une épreuve spéciale ou pour rouler tranquillement, en respectant les limitations de vitesse, sur les parcours de liaison entre les spéciales. Attention spectateurs : attendez le feu vert pour aider les pilotes ! En cas de sortie de route, et si les spectateurs veulent aider l’équipage à remettre la voiture sur le parcours, ils devront attendre qu’une lumière verte soit allumée en haut du pare-brise. Si cette lumière est rouge, ou éteinte, ils ne devront pas s’approcher, car cela voudra dire que la voiture est dangereuse et qu’ils risquent de s’électrocuter en la manipulant. Cette consigne sera rappelée à tous les spectateurs pendant tout le rallye !

WRC Hybrids: a new era begins! We have waited for a long time, now they are ready to pounce on the roads of Rally Monte-Carlo. The 2022 edition, from January 20 to 23, will be historic in more than one way: a new generation of rally cars, the brand new hybrid WRC1s, using exclusively synthetic or ecological fuels, will allow the World Rally Championship (WRC) to show a good example of what is possible today, thanks to the investments of major manufacturers ... and the talent of engineers. Three years of commitment by Toyota, Hyundai and M-Sport Ford The three manufacturers and teams officially entered in WRC have signed a three-year commitment to develop and enter hybrid cars, which is a great way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the creation of the World Rally Championship in 1973 at the he glorious time of Alpine-Renault and Lancia, among other legendary manufacturers. Testing of the new cars continued in December, in northern Europe and southern France, and drivers were very favorably impressed with the new machines, for which the development costs of all the new technologies put in place were shared equally between the manufacturers and the FIA, with three obvious priorities: safety, cost management and sustainability. Announced in 2019, the introduction of hybrid technology, at the highest level of world rallying, has resulted in the final green light given by the World Council of the FIA, the supreme authority in motorsport. And it is therefore in the most prestigious rally on the calendar, the “Monte-Carlo”, that this new era will begin. “A milestone in the sport’s history” for the 50th anniversary season The introduction of sustainable hybrid technology for the WRC’s headline category marks one of the biggest milestones in the sport’s history. It’s fitting such a major progression will be welcomed in the championship’s 50th anniversary season. Along with the FIA, the manufacturers and Promoter, WRC is fully committed to the introduction of greener cars. The hybrid powertrain forms an integral part of the automotive industry as the world moves towards a more sustainable future, and it’s essential the WRC is aligned with this evolution. This is rallying with

a purpose – providing a perfect R&D platform for the automotive industry to communicate its new technology. WRC remains motorsport’s toughest championship for productionbased cars and the leadership from these teams sends a positive message about its future to other manufacturers considering joining the series. The hybrid announcement followed confirmation of the WRC’s plans for more sustainable fuel for competing cars and greener energy sources in the service park. Sustainable fuel (synthetic or biofuel) will be provided to competitors across the different championship classes, and plug-in hybrid charging stations will be available in service parks, with sustainable energy covering the needs for World Rally Cars and general service park power requirements. A 3.9 kWh battery for 100 kW of power (180 Nm) Each new car in the WRC1 category is equipped with a hybrid unit and a 3.9 kWh battery able to produce 100 kW (136 hp) of supplementary power, for a torque of 180 Nm. It is installed at the rear of the car, next to the rear axle, and protected by an ultra-resistant carbon envelope. It can be used to provide additional power during a special stage or to drive quietly, while respecting the speed limits, on normal roads between the stages. Spectators will have to wait for the green light to help the drivers ! In the event of a car crash, and if spectators want to help the crew to put the car back on the road, they will have to wait for a green light to appear at the top of the windshield. If this light is red, or off, they should not approach, because it will mean that the car is dangerous and that they risk being electrocuted by handling it. Le stationnement de tout véhicule est interdit sur la route des épreuves spéciales ainsi que de part et d’autre de l’axe privatisé. Les spectateurs ne peuvent plus pénétrer dans les épreuves spéciales ni se déplacer dans celles-ci, sur la route ou sur les accotements, 30 mn avant le départ du 1er concurrent et jusqu’à la fin de l’épreuve. Les spectateurs ne sont autorisés que dans les seules zones réservées au public et balisées par du filet vert ou de la rubalise verte. Ces zones sont toujours en surplomb d’au minimum 1,50 m et hors de la trajectoire des concurrents. En dehors de ces zones, les spectateurs sont interdits. Le non-respect de ces règles de sécurité entrainera l’annulation de l’épreuve spéciale. Dispensez-vous de faire sur le terrain d’autrui, ce que vous ne tolèreriez pas chez vous (feux, coupes de bois, dépôts d’ordure…). SPECTATEURS VIGILANTS, REUSSITE DE L’EVENEMENT. Spectators’ vehicles are strictly forbidden to enter and to be parked by the sides of the roads of the Special Stages. Spectators are strictly forbidden to enter or to walk along the roads of the Special Stages, from 30minutes before the start of the first Competitor’s car until the completion of the Stage. Spectators are only authorized to stand in the designated Public spectating zones, which are marked with green tape or green ribbon. These zones are always elevated to a minimum of 1.50 meters high and outside the trajectory of the rally cars. All other spectating positions are strictly forbidden. If Spectators fail to respect these Security regulations, then the Organizer shall be obliged to cancel the Special Stage. Follow the Countryside Code: Respect the land and the properties of others as if they were your own. Do not harvest wood; do not make fires; do not leave rubbish … RESPONSIBLE SPECTATORS CONTRIBUTE TO THE SUCCESS OF THE EVENT. Watch the Rally from an authorized and safe position and with the correct behavior of Spectators.

Disputée à maintes reprises en sens inverse depuis le début des années 1980 et ce jusqu’en 2013, cette spéciale n’a finalement été parcourue qu’une seule fois dans cette version, en 2008. Elle débute par l’ascension du Col Saint-Roch (990 m), dont les nombreux lacets offrent un spectacle de tous les instants. Changement ensuite de versant - exposé Nord - en direction du Col de la Porte (1057 m), avec des portions toujours à l’ombre en janvier. La fin de la spéciale est ensuite beaucoup plus étroite, en descente d’abord, parsemée de pierres éparses, puis en montée rapide sur la fin, jusqu’au bas du hameau de Loda qui surplombe la vallée de la Vésubie… Often contested the other way round between Lantosque (or Loda) and Lucéram from the beginning of the 80s until 2013, this stage was only run once in this direction, in 2008. It starts going uphill to Col Saint-Roch (990m), with lots of hairpins providing a permanent show for the spectators. Then there is a change of side - facing North - towards Col de la Porte (1057m), with portions always in the shade in January. The end of the stage is then much narrower, first downhill, with scattered stones, then uphill and very fast at the end, up to the bottom of the Loda hamlet which overlooks the Vésubie valley ... Un monument du Rallye Monte-Carlo qui n’a pas été emprunté dans cette version depuis 2014, et qui forcément bouleverse les habitudes, avec des difficultés qui ne sont pas au même endroit. La montée depuis La Bollène-Vésubie vers le col de Turini (1607 m) ne pose aucun problème majeur vu son orientation géographique et sa topographie. Les difficultés sont à l’approche du col et dans les 5 premiers kilomètres de la descente, beaucoup plus délicate car côté Nord, là où la neige et la glace font partie intégrante du décor à cette période de l’année. Le rythme est ensuite plus régulier jusqu’à Moulinet avec notamment des portions de route très rapides… This is a classic stage at Monte-Carlo Rally but it has not been run in this direction since 2014, so that drivers habits will be completely disrupted, with difficulties appearing in different spots. Climbing from La Bollène-Vésubie towards Col de Turini (1,607m) offers no major issue thanks to the geographic orientation and the topography. It gets tougher when approaching the pass and in the first five kilometers of the downhill portion, and much more critical as it is exposed to the North, where snow and ice are an integral part of the scenery at this time of year. Grande classique disputée pour la toute première fois en 1965 et très souvent courue jusqu’en 2006 depuis Saint-Sauveur-sur-Tinée, c’est désormais au tour de la commune de Roure d’accueillir le départ de ce chrono légendaire du Col de la Couillole (1678 m). Après une longue ascension vers le point culminant de cette 90e édition du Rallye Monte-Carlo, sur une route étroite au départ, plus rapide ensuite et entrecoupée d’épingles très souvent verglacées, les concurrents doivent ensuite conjuguer avec une descente sur Beuil beaucoup plus large et très rapide, sensations fortes garanties… This is another classic stage, first contested in 1965 and very often run until 2006 from SaintSauveur-sur-Tinée. Parcourue à deux reprises en 2006, cette spéciale démarre à Guillaumes, village du Haut Pays des Alpes-Maritimes, situé au cœur des Gorges Rouges de Daluis, communément appelées “le petit Colorado Niçois”, à l’entrée de la Haute Vallée du Var. La montée très rapide est très bien exposée pendant 6 km jusqu’au charmant village médiéval de Péone, situé à la limite du Parc National du Mercantour, au pied de pittoresques pics rocheux surnommés les «Demoiselles». Arrivent ensuite les réelles difficultés, jusqu’à la station de ski de Valberg où la route, plus étroite et entrecoupée d’épingles, serpente en versant Nord au milieu de la forêt, sur une chaussée fréquemment recouverte de neige et/ou de glace à cette époque de l’année… Run twice in 2006, this stage starts in Guillaumes, a village in the higher part of the Alpes-Maritimes, in the heart of the Daluis Red Gorges, most commonly called «the Nice Colorado» at the entry to the Upper Var Valley. La seconde partie reprend la fin de l’ES 15-17 du dernier jour, avec la remontée vers le Col de Félines (930 m). La descente ensuite en direction d’Entrevaux est tout simplement majestueuse avec une succession d’épingles… The initial portion takes up the first seven kilometers of Stage 1 in 2017, with a strong probability of ice, going uphill towards the Champ hamlet as well as downhill on the narrow and winding road to Val-de-Chalvagne. The second part takes up the end portion of SS 15-17 on the last day, heading up to Col de Félines (930m), before heading down for Entrevaux in a majestic scenery, jumping from one hairpin to the other…
