Evil Keanevil’s work is a dynamic and bold exploration of reality and entropy. Pop culture icons, as well as original characters, deconstructed to reveal the core components of which they’re composed of by liquefying, or melting the subject. Maybe the face is melting onto the skull instead of off it, to be worn like a mask? There are still plenty of themes hidden in Evil Keanevil’s work, yet to be revealed. Which is why he needs to keep melting people and things... to find them. Check out his other works on the links below: Website - shannonkeane.com Instagram - @evilkeanevil

Nina Maskiell’s soft scultpure pastel images caught our eye so we contacted her to speak to her about her art & her process. How and when did you start creating art? Tell us your origin story: Art has always been something I do. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t drawing or painting or creating in some capacity. I absolutely love it and it really comes naturally to me. I need to make art as much as I need to eat and sleep. When I was young I loved coming home after school and drawing in my bedroom. I felt like a magical fairy sitting at my desk living in another world. I don’t think I have ever grown out of this feeling. I remember feeling so at home making art and it gave me a sense of identity and purpose. How has your art evolved over time? In epic proportions and it’s only just begun! My art practice expanded a lot while doing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at RMIT. Before that I was mainly doing black and white illustrations. But I went to university to explore and I had access to so many resources so I tried a lot of different mediums. I started playing with fabric and got obsessed with making soft sculptures and wearable art. I also dabbled in video art and making soundscapes. Each medium I explore informs the other. Making soft sculptures has helped develop my new style of drawing and my soundscapes are like a sonic interpretation of my visuals. What themes do you pursue? Ever since I was young I was always drawn to the natural world for inspiration and loved botanical illustration. This affinity with nature is always present in my work. I love exploring imagery that connects the human body to the natural world by creating hybrid forms in states of transformation. Feminine and fluffy also comes to mind, if that’s even a theme. All my current work stems from a sci-fi/ fantasy story I am creating and is a small part of a much larger world that is only just beginning. Can you explain your creative process: I’m constantly collecting all kinds of images for inspiration and I am always writing down ideas. The best ones can come at the most random moments. When it comes to a new work, it’s very intuitive and I start freestyle and just see what happens. I then might copy parts of other images to help with the detail. I have been doing this approach for a while now so I’m starting to shift my process to more thoughtful planning and decision making before I put pen to paper. Looking through your work up on your website, you have been working in many different mediums from pen to material to music, what to date is your favourite? I think I would have to say painting is my all time favourite. I sort of treat everything as though I am painting. I also love experimenting with sounds and making music because it’s so foreign to me which makes it really exciting. That’s why I don’t paint much at the moment because it’s too familiar to me. I have too much energy for trying new things! Which medium do you see you next collection of work being created from? I have two new goals with my work. One is an illustrated story book which I have been slowly working on and the other is a matter of bringing all my work together to create a live sound and visual performance piece so I can bring people into my world and create an experience. How do you know when a work is finished? It’s a feeling. I stare at my work for ages and often put it away for a couple of days and look at it with fresh eyes to see if anything needs the final touch. I find being aware of composition is also really helpful. There can be a wholeness that you see in the work if the composition is done well.
Describe art in one sentence. “Art is to remind us why we exist”.

SPUNKY BRUISER is a sustainble, eco friendly clothing label that takes pre-loved clothing, strips it down & creates bold, contrasting fashion into pieces that you will want to keep in your wardrobe forever. We jumped at the chance to ask designers Christian & Bex a few questions. When & where did Spunky Bruiser come into existence? What is your origin story? Spunky Bruiser came to light around 10 years ago in Sydney, where we met. We were both trading at markets individually as well as working full time jobs. Although our approach was different we realised our goals and drive and influences were similarly aligned. Both of us craved the independence and challenge of self-employment and making a living creatively and sustainably. Trading at the markets selling second hand clothing and screen printed tees amongst other items we were very quick to realise that the products at the markets were becoming saturated and to alleviate the problem of competition we could see that if elements of completely unique design were incorporated into or offerings we would no longer be battling with competition from other traders. Our shared skill set allowed us to implement this strategy quite quickly and effectively. How did the environmental impact of fashion become the main focus of Spunky Bruiser? In our minds, it just makes sense! If you can be sustainable and ethical about production why wouldn’t you. For us it’s like deciding to throw your rubbish on the ground or in a bin? Like choosing to buy a plastic bottle of water and throw it in a bin five minutes later or taking a refillable water bottle with you? It’s a lifestyle choice about making responsible decisions that are within our control that carries through into our business. It also doesn’t make any sense to us for another person to be paid unfairly so that we are better off- hence we are personally responsible for our own production between the three of us (Bex, Christian and Jill – Bex’s Mum ) What is your main influence when you are designing styles? There is a definite Spunky Bruiser aesthetic that walks a line creates an edge of contrasting ideas – the use of unexpected textiles, contrasting textures, clashing print styles. We are always treating the design work in a way where we attempt to make things somehow familiar but not quite like anything else. Second hand materials have an air of familiarity and nostalgia but the style will be quite unique. When creating the pieces, what is the main focus: style, longevity or functionality? Our design process is to take a scope of what materials
are being discarded at a rapid rate, and then applying design to those type of materials – rather than designing a garment and then deciding what type of materials it will be made from. We are also not designing for trend but more for timeless appeal- intending for each garment to be in someones wardrobe forever. Many of our styles are everyday shapes and super practical despite often also being quite conversational. By using second hand clothing as your fabrics, what percentage from those pieces do you class as waste? We make use of almost all the materials down to using smaller pieces in 6” square patchwork along with collar linings also. All denim off-cuts are re-worked into larger panels to be used in jackets and pants too. Scraps of tee shirt materials and leather are turned into hand cut tassels on scarves and smaller pieces of leather, denim and tapestry are used in caps. So we have a system that materials move through for use as they get smaller. The amount that we actually throw out is very minimal. How has Spunky Bruiser developed from the start until now? Where do you see the label heading in the future? We have grown our business from nothing, starting from the absolute ground up. To have survived 10 years is amazing given the current climate for retail, particularly clothing. I attribute this to offering something truly unique that people can’t get anywhere else and that our customers really believe there is value in our process from the environmental side through to the care taken making each piece to the creativity we bring to making the garments along with the connectivity and excitement of meeting the person that made your clothes. Spunky Bruiser will continue to grow slow and steady, as is the way when you are holding tight to your integrity, one garment at a time. Our style of making has started to gain more traction in more recent years, so we hope that we can continue to influence the way in which Australia shops as well as takes responsibility in innovation of clothing manufacture .
Define Sustainable fashion is one sentence. Clothing that is made with the intent to service the owner with a lifetime of functional wear, self expression over trend and is made with a minimum impact to both the planet and its’ inhabitants.

Matt Chromatic is the Creative & Technical Director behind some of the most mind blowing festival stages in the world. We had a chance to ask him a few quick questions. You have been in this industry for over 20 years, when was the light bulb moment you realised there were bigger things to come. The light globe moments are sparks, you can smother your sparks by not letting anyone know about it or you can let sparks fly and let it have an intensity of a cataclysmic supernova. Currently we are in inner Mongolia, in the heart of the Tenggar desert with 2 million people gathering around one of these sparks. With living off the grid; no television or other mainstream influences, what inspires you? Yes, my dwelling is completely off the grid, it doesn’t have an address. I literally live in a glass box overlooking the valleys and mountains that I technically own, but only the caretaker of. Inspiration is having a direct connection to Akashic records, you can dip your toe in or bask in it’s glory. What is your creative process when coming up with concepts? There is no process, if the answer is not clear then it’s not the answer. If there is a blockage in the workflow, return when there isn’t. How long does it take from the initial concept to completion? It varies from project to project, if it’s a full immersive experience of freestanding nature, it will clearly be a more intense process than a POV (point of view). It can take days to months depending on the execution. What makes your creations stand out from the rest? How do you describe your signature in your designs? I’m not considered eccentric in design which I think gives me a point of difference, it’s heavy duty, industrial and intentional, meaning that the understanding of the process through to execution doesn’t get lost in translation. I make it very clear to be what, how and why. Have you ever had a concept knocked back that you really wanted to build? If so have you ever revisited the idea & created it for another event (& have it be mind blowing)? No, because that was an idea for then and this is for now. Favourite set you’ve created to date. It’s the taste of each experience. There have been so many amazing moments that I cannot compare one to the other, like, travelling through Peru to slay a dragon with my crew to the intensity of Vegas with a series of razor sharp cubes, living in hope that the favourite is yet to come. What is the one thing you couldn’t have done without while creating & building your business? Belief in the outcome & not questioning the process. My lady and team who have fought alongside me as we have headed into battles. My build team are also great at understanding my final creations, without them this could not come to fruition. Any hints on what projects you are working on this coming year? Some major projects in the works here in Australia and overseas (including several EDC additions throughout various locations on planet earth) Our team will be reaching new frontiers across the globe. You can find us somewhere in between inner Mongolia, Mexico, Japan, America, China and Europe.
Advice for emerging creatives? It’s to realise you are not an emerging creative, more you have made a conscious decision to embrace your creativity and it’s up to you to make the decision on what level you want that to sit on.

“Bad Romance explored my attraction to individuals and places with whom romance never works. Allowing myself to be inspired by attitude and emotion, Bad Romance gives a massive finger to the fashion industries shady inner workings. Aware of all its flaws, but desired to be a part of fashion more than anything else. Shape shifting, and constantly toying with proportions at both ends of the spectrum, High and low art or the mix of Haute Couture and Pret a Porter wasn’t the only mergence featured in Bad Romance, but as styling is evolving it is merging business casual and sportswear into one. Women today want durability of sportswear and the versatility of business casual. Consumers want less maintenance of their clothes. Technology is such a pervasive part of our lives, its only natural to want it in our clothes. Athleisure wear is an evolution as opposed to a trend or fad. While athletic wear was created for a specific use — sports or athletics, obviously — athleisure clothing isn’t. And it’s this versatility that’s attracted me...” bec boyle 2017
Jodee’s work is heavily based on the human condition and the emotional state of mind that makes or breaks a happy existence. Her portraits are a reflection of ones memories and expectations, in which the concept of an intoxicating other is celebrated or hated. The characters attempt to awaken forgotten memoires
and desired longings. By thematically dealing with the feeling of being torn between addiction and satisfaction, between excess and boredom, she attempt’s to confuse the public’s senses and breach space, time and feeling.
The works portray Jodee’s own existence, where extreme experiences, fear and obsession collide. Website: www.jodeeknowles.tumblr.com Instagram: @jodee_knowles

Chloe Mung is one talented girl. She graduated from Whitehouse School in Sydney in 2016 with a collection so fresh & fun that you couldn’t help but smile. Not only can she design but she can also sing, with her quirky style & melodic voice you can not help but think this girl is going places. She had grabbed our attention and we couldn’t help but wonder where she was headed next so we sat down with her for a chat to find out. You came onto our radar with your brightly printed designs from your 2016 final year collection “Sugar Spice Not Everything Nice” while at the Whitehouse School in Sydney. What drew you to Fashion Design? I ventured into design because I wanted to be creative in a new, even more accessible way, to challenge myself to be inventive and crazy but in the form of making clothes for everyone and my friend just reinforced that as she reminded me that I do love expressing myself through clothes so hey, why not give it a shot?! Can you describe your design signature? I have the biggest heart eyes for colour-blocking and prints!! I would say I fit into the hub of folks in Harajuku because I am totally about the cute aesthetic but with a magnificently subtle edge. You are also a talented musician with wicked vocals. Which is your greater love? Fashion or Music? Can you choose? Well, this is the biggest cliche ever, but whatever - Music has always been with me and will forever be my greatest love. It’s my most straight forward, raw outlet; I feel a certain way, I pen it down, put some nice chords to it and boom, we have a song. I love how spontaneous and instantaneous that process can be most times. Now, fashion is a baby to me. I’m finding my way and I’m slowly but surely falling in love with it everyday. My fashion project, YELLOWGIRL is definitely tied with a pretty pink bow to my music project, MUNGMUNG. What style of music do you identify with most? Is this also your musical style? If not, how do you describe yours? I would have to say, Hip hop, RnB, Future Bass probably take top 3. As for my music, it would be a sweet batter of Hip Hop, RnB, Alternative and sprinkles of Pop. So I’m definitely influenced by what I listen to. Who and what are your musical influences and do they also influence you when it comes to designing your pieces? My main squeeze is Tyler, the Creator. He does it all - musician, producer, director and designer, and he is only a few years older than me. I appreciate his aesthetics and his love for art. He has such a vibrant, out-of-the-box music style.
My current music obsessions also consist of Kehlani, SZA and Bryson Tiller. Now, relating this back to YELLOWGIRL, I would say the main thing that links my music tastes back to my design is how I like to create cool daywear/streetwear type silhouettes. What was the first song you learnt to sing and the first piece of clothing you made? According to my mum, the first official song I learnt to sing was this theme song from one of the Chinese dramas my mum watched & the first garment I made was an asymmetrical stripe print-on-print wrap skirt that featured an umbrella holder, from first semester at the Whitehouse School. Best fashion & musical experiences One of the best fashion experiences was watching Tyler, the Creator’s GOLF Fashion Show 2016 on Youtube. Tyler curated this show that was so different to what I know of fashion. It was dynamic, accessible and all models just looked like they were having a blast. Best music experience so far is songwriting. There is no better feeling in the world than to create original music and of course, performing them to a happy, energetic crowd. In your eyes what part does fashion play in musical performance? I believe everything under the creative umbrella is tied together. With music, there is never just the sounds. There’s always visuals that accompany it. I think fashion is one of the greatest partners to music. It helps musicians tell a story and create a vibe & enforce the visuals which definitely makes the “other” world more real. Favourite song & Designer. This question will have an answer that will forever be changing, haha! Currently, I am abusing the repeat button for “In My Feelings” by Kehlani and “Somethin Tells Me” by Bryson Tiller. I’m in my “no chill” vibes lately. A lot of my favourite designers are my peers - the emerging designers. Ewol, Zhou, Bec Boyle, JRAA Code, to name a few. I love the fresh point of view. I love to look at streetwear labels too; Lazy Oaf and Mini Cream are my favourites. My classic go-to Inspos are of course, Miuccia Prada, Karl Lagerfeld, Jeremy Scott, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli of Valentino. What can we see from you in 2018? Oh, this is a secret. I love surprises, so I guess you’ll just have to hang on tight and enjoy the ride with me! But definitely know that I am always doing something, so you will be hearing and seeing more and more exciting things! I think most of us here will agree - MORE IS MORE! Define Music in one sentence. Music speaks to you when no one else can and it gives you a voice when you feel like you’re choking.

Leah is completing her Diploma of Illustration at Melbourne Polytechnic, She enjoys exploring themes of feminism, flora and fauna, delving into the ways we view our physical selves while exploring an array of mediums. Through her work she deconstructs the ideas of beauty, perceptions, and image while exploring the theme of feminism. She loves illustrating animals, plants & people, but is especially obsessed with illustrating faces and the way in which we perceive ourselves and the world around us. Through her art she portrays what she feels is beautiful or intriguing – whether illustrating people, plants, animals or anything else she feels drawn to.
