LETTER FROM THE EDITOR: 1 YEAR! What a year and we made it! It's been such an amazing whirlwind of new things: new experiences, new friends, new collaborations, new ventures, all of them fantastic! So here is my inspirational message for you for 2019: Life is short, too short to be scared of failure, to doubt yourself, to not dream big. Dream as big as you can and follow that dream with the determination and perseverance to make your dream a reality. Nothing worth doing is easy, life is hard and you have to work at it to make it what you want it to be. Be as out there and as unapologetically creative as you can be right now! I hope you enjoy this very large double issue, I've spent many hours (and a few sleepless nights) compiling these amazing creatives for you to be inspired by. From necklaces made of teeth, to a collection inspired by the romance of Italian culture, Doodad + Fandango’s colour-pop statement pieces are made to stand out and shout "FASHUN!" from the highest peak. Designer Nikita Margarita has a knack for designing pieces that you can’t help but want to in your accessories drawer. Nikita took the plunge in creating her own line, which is the plastique fantastique wearable art signature style that you see today. Read on as Nikita shed’s some light on her career as a jewellery designer. Your resume is coloured in careers in fashion design, shoe making and costume styling, when did you first realise you wanted to leave these other careers behind to pursue a career as a jewellery designer? I had a burning desire to design and make accessories for a really, really long time, but had no idea how to go about it. That sounds a bit silly now, but 15 or so years ago it was a different landscape, there was no instagram of course and starting a label seemed huge, daunting, impossible! Eventually (in 2005) I heard about the Jewellery and Object Design Adv. Dip. course offered at the Enmore Design College. I signed up immediately and it literally changed my life, I ended up studying there for 5 years learning conceptual design and silver smithing. My materials and style have changed a lot since then and even though it’s pretty much always been a struggle working in this field, I love it so much and it’s a more natural fit for me than fashion design or other disciplines. I realised somewhere along the way that while I am obsessed with fashion, I don’t care to produce it or care too much about what other people wear. However I want to smother people in my accessories! You pay homage to the bakelite and celluloid costume jewellery of the 1930’s & 50’s with the boldness of your pieces tying all of your collections together with a common thread. Can you tell us how you keep your ideas and inspiration fresh without losing your signature style? After I graduated from jewellery school I got a part-time job at Harlequin Market, which was a boutique that specialised in vintage costume jewellery. I learnt so much about the different plastics that have been used in accessories over the last 100 years and it gave me a new respect for these materials as well as an appreciation for the fun you can have in this medium. School had made me a bit of a contemporary design snob, so it was eye opening and freeing to recognise the value and beauty in these ‘non-precious’ pieces. My very first Perspex designs were inspired by a retrospective I saw of Yayoi Kusama (2009 MCA, Sydney) and my love of vintage Bakelite designs. I take originality very seriously and try my hardest not to be too influenced by other people’s designs, though at the same time I am strongly influenced by pop art and I think everyone has a right to have a bash at anything, we all have our own versions of similar ideas in us! I try not to get too caught up worrying about other people copying me, and I try to be the best designer I can, always seeking to be original and unique and true to my voice. I don’t take my inspiration from other jewellery designers, but from fashion, art history and travel.
Collaborating with other artists is a fantastic way to keep new ideas coming in, and at the end of the day I can’t help who I essentially am, a fashion addict, with a dash of tacky in me but with an unending obsession with adornment. What has been the biggest hurdle and greatest asset in getting your label up and running to the business that it is today? To be honest it can be a gruelling and an isolated life operating a small business on your own! I am constantly exhausted trying to do everything by myself. It has been a struggle every day but I am so grateful for the little successes I have had along the way that give me the motivation to keep going. I’ve never run a business before so I’m usually feeling along in the dark and often wonder if I am my own worst enemy with some of the decisions I’ve made ie. choosing to manufacture myself and not off shore. The biggest asset to my enterprise has undoubtedly been Instagram, when you don’t have money for PR social media is crucial, but my relationship with it is tenuous! Instagram are always changing things around and my business is so dependant on it now that the way they mess around with the algorithm can have a negative impact on everything. Undoubtedly a huge asset to my business are the people who seem to love what I do and not just buy my work but give me motivation with their nice comments on social media and IRL when I meet them. Without that I would fall apart from the worries and isolation. I know that’s dramatic, but working on your own is a particular type of pressure and I appreciate the positive feedback so much. D+F is stated to be a sustainable, eco-friendly label. Can you tell us a bit more about your stance on being a label that supports looking after the planet and the steps you take to ensure that your carbon footprint is minimal. I think the most significant step I have taken in my label to be low impact is to be self producing and made to order. This way I can control how the pieces are manufactured, how the waste is disposed, where all of the bits and pieces are sourced and who is making it all (me!). I don’t overproduce, I only make what people order and no one is getting exploited making it (oh, except me!). All of my acrylic waste is collected and sent for recycling, and as much as possible I try to buy my materials from local suppliers so I am supporting local businesses and most importantly I am always looking to make my pieces to a high quality so that they last. I encourage people to get in touch if anything breaks, I am SO HAPPY to repair their doodads and have never charged anyone to repair anything. I certainly have quite a bit of guilt seeing as how I do work in plastic, so to balance this out I treat these materials with the highest respect and use them in a way so that they last for a very long time, not just one silly season of fashion.
There is no denying that I love D+F and that I get excited with every new piece I see. Can you tell us what part of the design process gets you excited and motivated to keep on designing and making these wearable art marvels? I’m impatient and get easily bored but am powered by a never ending desire to create new designs. Sometimes I can despair thinking there is nothing left I can possibly turn into a doodad, and then I wake up, it’s a new day, and I have a 100 new ideas tapping on my brain! I find that hours of sitting behind a computer designing are not that rewarding, I prefer being in the studio and using my hands to create and the final step of peeling off the protective paper on a new piece to see the bright colours and crisp designs is the best moment! I also love creating images and photo shoots to showcase my work, I often have an image in my head of the final shot, I can see who’s wearing the item and how it’s been styled before it’s even a sketch. When I was a teenager in the 80’s I was o-b-s-e-s-s-e-d with fashion magazines so getting to work with other creatives to make beautiful images featuring my doodads is such a dream come true… I sometimes can’t believe it is really happening. To be a part of the visual global conversation is so exciting. What is the next step for D+F? Where would you like to see D+F head in the next year? I want to still be doing what I’m doing, and I’d love to be making enough money to employ more people in the manufacturing process. I’d love to see Doodads being sold in Japan where I know people would like my work, but it can be very hard to break into this market.
I’d like to be making the accessories for Moschino, I find the accessories they use in their runway shows soooo blah and not nearly as amazing as their clothing. I know I could do a better job, come on Jeremy Scott, hit me up!

Lauren Azar
Soulful pop Singer and Keyboardist Lauren Azar is one super talented woman. We first heard Lauren sing with the Reubens on the 2018 P!nk tour, and with the discovery of a mutual friend we were able to get the chance to chat with her to find out a little more about what makes her tick when it comes to making music. You have been writing songs since the age of 12 and you are also self taught in Piano, how did it all start? Can you remember that first moment or first thought you had when it all began? It all started with a little plastic Casio keyboard my parents bought me. I was completely disinterested with learning the “How to’s” from the beginners book they gifted along with it. It was all about emulating the music I was exposed to at the time. The poppy, rocky, souly chord progressions I was obsessed with. I wanted to recreate that magic but also come up with my own little ditties that, I thought were super deep back then but are complete popcorn in comparison to now haha! It felt completely euphoric when I’d belt out something that I had made and it hasn’t stopped from there. I’ve read that you have a love of 90’s alternative rock, (I know that I can never get enough of Jeff Buckley) who are your biggest influences from this time period and genre of music? Love and true obsession. (Jeff Buckley is one at the for-front for me too. ‘Vancouver’ is truly mind blowing!). The list is honestly endless! Smashing Pumpkins, Incubus, No Doubt, Alanis Morrisette, Garbage, Paula Cole, PJ Harvey, Filter, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, The Cranberries, Hole, Sublime, Radiohead...I’m missing some too. These musicians were burned into my subconscious in my youth. Like most of my age group, our excitement would be waking up on a Saturday and Sunday morning to watch Rage and Video Hits and it was such an exciting time for music. I felt like there were no rules. They were all proud of their influences too and weren’t afraid to say “Fuck You!” and the world needed that. Also, sonically, everything was perfect. They can do no wrong in terms of song craft and production and that timelessness I want to achieve. All I ever want to do is get together with my friends, listen to these songs and analyse them. It’s the best. Up until this moment, can you describe your musical trials and tribulations in short? Wowzer. Well, it’s been wavy. I think as I’ve gotten older my eyes widen more and more to the fact that I was a kid when I started this music thing and I haven’t stopped since then. It’s been my identity forever. Sometimes it’s scary to think I have nothing else.
I’ve won, I’ve lost, I’ve been told I’m shit, I’ve been told I’m the best thing since sliced bread. The biggest triumph is cutting my teeth in performance and persisting for this long. The biggest hurtles have been, coming to the point of walking away due to what people might think of me.
I have to ask, how excited were you when you found out that you would be singing with The Rubens as part of the opening act for P!nk? What did you take from that experience that you’ll never forget? After being asked to perform at their LO LA RU album launch (which was in our hometown Camden), it was that electric, we all kinda knew we’d play together again. When they asked me about the P!nk shows I honestly was beside myself. I just wanted to soak up everything. I learnt how amazingly smart, kind and talented each and every one of those boys (and their team and family) are. Also, how rad P!nk is. Like, ridiculously down to earth and insanely motivated to sustain her career. We are all just people doing what we love. What is your all time favourite piece of music that you’ll never be tired of hearing? Well that’s super hard. I guess a song that I love to listen to pretty much everyday at the moment is Try, Try, Try by Smashing Pumpkins. That song is helping me through a lot at the moment. My favourite album of all time though is Return Of Saturn by No Doubt and that to me, in its entirety, is a masterpiece. You are currently in the studio recording new music with producer Ash Maklad, can you tell us what is the inspiration behind this latest venture and when it will be released for us to hear? Trying to not overthink what is the inspiration and objective is. I want to let things roll out. No blueprint. No predisposition. No agenda. Ash is super easy to bounce off. If I’m not feeling it, he’ll pull it. If I’m vibing, he’ll amp it up. I’m looking to have music out early next year. Ok, last question : What is your favourite song to belt out at the bar/in the car/for karaoke? Anything Alanis Morrisette is my go to. I also love to belt out “What’s Up” 4 Non Blondes. It’s a crowd pleaser (and a guilty pleasure of mine). Isn’t music just the best?

"What we wear should not define what gender or race we are. Freedom is the philospohy here, free to be who we are, where we go and what we wear. Fashion is a form of self-expression". Tamie Anthas studied Fashion Design at Sydney's Fashion Design Studio in Ultimo up until this year and has been noticed by local stylist's and photographer's since her first year of study. Her label, DigitalKittn, is not provactive nor does it have shock value and although Tamie is aware of the current trends, both in Australia and internationally, she does not follow them. Her label has its own unique and distinctive voice that Tamie curates with style, ingenuity and with an environmental conscience. Tamie designs a kaleidoscope of unique pieces from contemporary denim street wear and luxurious kiminos, to elegant evening wear. With a strong focus on transforming old garments into new, unique re-threads, she believes up-cycling more economical and sustainble, and one of the many directions fashion should be taking. Most of the fabric for Tamie's first collection that will be shown in 2019, have come from sourcing off-cuts and end-of-roll materials from various local fashion companies, second hand stores, remnant stores and recycling centres. She wanted to have a minimal footprint in creating this collection but also show other designers what can be done with other people's trash. That discarded fabrics can be turned into modern, contemporary fashion: from trash to couture. Tamie's first collection ATOMIC SUSHI embodies modernism with curves and structure, heavily influenced with serious tailoring and technique and with the hand screen prints also injecting the playful tones of Japanese Anime. The collection is bold in colour, accented with black and white monochromes and hints of the 1990's throughout. Each piece of the collection has been created like a work of art with many points of interest in full 360 degrees. With Tamie's drive and dedication to her chosen art form, she is one designer to watch!

Brooklyn Marok Brooklyn Marok is 25 years young, and is an artist from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. These are her words: “Every day I feel the need to paint what I see and how I feel. I enjoy painting these faces because they take on my emotions. For any bad feelings I need to get off my chest, or good feelings that I want to capture, these babes are happy to embody them. Creating these colourful, emotional and surreal portraits (which in some sense are all self-portraits) helps me express myself; it allows me to process and understand my own feelings and thoughts. I never know where I am going when I start a painting; I like to let my intuition, subconscious, and my brush, guide me. Sometimes I even forget I am the one in control of making decisions. While painting a piece I simply keep adding paint and layering until the piece feels complete. I work with acrylic as my medium, and use wood as my canvas for those reasons; wood can hold multiple layers, and acrylic paint dries quickly. This way I can continue layering the paint all in one sitting, with one feeling. ‘She’ has become a replica in which, when I paint her, the colours I will use, my brushworks, the elements included in the piece, will vary depending on my mood. I hope each piece speaks to a different individual, because they are all telling a different story.”
