What's up, madlang pipol?! Winnipeg was once again on a wild ride last Tuesday, April 18, when the Unkabogable Vice Ganda brought the house down with her VGful Canada and USA Concert 2023. Presented by Pinoy Tribe Entertainment, the concert brought the audience on the edge of their seats with the powerful song and dance performances and hilarious stand up comedy of Vice Ganda. Despite a controversial show in Edmonton where her hair was pulled by unruly audience members, Vice shook it off and brought her signature brand of humor to Winnipeg, leaving the 1800-strong crowd in stitches. Joined by Asia's Pop Heartthrob, Darren Espanto, and fellow comedians MC and Lassy, Vice proved once again why she is the reigning queen of comedy in the Philippines and beyond.

These services are critical for helping newcomers transition into their new communities and build a sense of security and stability.

The Filipino community in Winnipeg has really been ready again for gigs after almost three years of pandemic blues. On April 29, 2023, two Philippine bands--Mayonnaise and Nobita--will visit to grace the stage of Exchange Event Centre (291 Bannatyne Ave.).

Immigration is a hallmark of a thriving society. It strengthens our social fabric and supports economic growth and prosperity. As a government, we have undertaken a number of initiatives to increase economic immigration, including forming the Manitoba Immigration Advisory Council (IAC), securing more nominations for the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (MPNP) and supporting the extension of work permits by the federal government for former international student graduates and skilled workers.

We formed the IAC to serve as an expert panel to recommend improvements to Manitoba’s immigration policies and programs. The IAC met with Manitobans to hear their experiences and held 14 town hall meetings with residents and business owners across the province. It also gathered valuable feedback through a public survey, which emphasized the MPNP should prioritize candidates with skills most in demand in the provincial economy.

As co-chair of the IAC, along with Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, we worked with 20 experts to develop recommendations to help attract more immigrants and business investors to Manitoba, align programs with regional labour market and community economic needs, and improve settlement, integration and foreign credential recognition services for newcomers.

The IAC report contains a number of valuable recommendations. These include increasing the number of immigrants nominated by the MPNP, conducting targeted outreach to specific labour markets, establishing regional hubs to address community labour market needs, recruiting skilled immigrants from other countries, and increasing Manitoba’s capacity to process applications from French-speaking countries.

The recommendations are instrumental to our efforts to advance Manitoba’s economic prosperity and improve our immigration programs and policies.

I am pleased to note, as a result of our government’s advocacy, Manitoba has been successful in securing more MPNP nominations than ever before. In 2023, the province plans to issue up to 9,500 nominations – a 50 per cent increase over 2022, and I expect nomination numbers to increase again in years to come. My team continues to work constructively with our federal partners to ensure Manitoba receives the nomination allocation it requires to support businesses, regional economic needs and the growing labour market.

We also support the federal government’s measures to extend work permits for former international student graduates and skilled workers who are invaluable to Manitoba’s growing labour market needs. I meet regularly with my federal counterpart to advocate for international student graduates working in Manitoba on a temporary status. Through my advocacy, they now have the opportunity for an 18 months extension on Post Graduate Work Permits, should they decide

Manitoba needs skilled workers and I will continue to be a strong advocate for the growth of the MPNP. We have a proud history in Manitoba of welcoming newcomers from around the world and as minister, I am proud to champion this great province as a wonderful place to live, work, build a business and raise a family.

Yet to release a full-length record, Nobita has nevertheless come up with several singles that included "Yákap," "Ikáw Lang," "Únang Sayáw," and "Kalangítan."

QPAM RAISES FUNDS FOR ANOTHER SCHOLAR

The Quezon Province Association of Manitoba (QPAM), headed by its president, Maggie Chan-Urbano, knows how to throw a fundraising event, and they proved it once again with their "Tara Na't Mag-AlmuTang with QPAM" shindig at Max's Restaurant last April 16. The event was sold out and packed to the brim with QPAM officers, families, friends, and supporters all there to raise some serious cash

for QPAM's Scholarship Program.

The event was a total blast, with attendees enjoying the mouthwatering brunch while mingling and having a great time.

Since 2013, QPAM's Scholarship Program has helped four scholars pursue their college education. That's four people who now have a brighter future, all thanks to the hard work and dedication of the QPAM officers and their supporters.

Celebrate Asian Heritage Month at the FascinAsian Film Festival in Winnipeg

The FascinAsian Film Festival (F3) is set to light up screens in Winnipeg and Calgary this May, as part of Asian Heritage Month celebrations.

Movie enthusiasts are encouraged to attend this unique event, which showcases films and stories from the Asian diaspora. Manitoba's only Asian-centric film festival will take place from Friday, May 5 to Sunday, May 7, 2023, at various venues in Winnipeg's Exchange District.

This year's festival features some exceptional highlights, including a talk by Ins Choi, the creator of the popular Canadian television show Kim's Convenience.

The Christian community in Winnipeg has been actively participating in various Lenten activities, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic. From the Public Way of the Cross to the Washing of the Feet, the community has come together to commemorate the season of Lent in a meaningful way. The Easter Vigil and Easter Salubong are also significant events that are eagerly awaited by the faithful. Vice Ganda just finished her Canada concert tour as part of VGful Canada and USA Tour 2023 and boy, did she bring the house down in Winnipeg last April 18th, a night to remember, filled with singing, dancing, and stand-up comedy that everyone missed since the unkabogable star's last visit in 2018.

Presented by StarMedia Entertainment and brought to Manitobans by Pinoy Tribe Entertainment headed by Marby Aguilar, the event was held at the RBC Convention Centre, and

attended by 1800 people, making the venue packed with excitement.

Local Winnipeg bands, On the Que, Soundcheck Music with Sher Policarpio, and Quarter 2 Band with Keesa Arguill ,kicked off the show with their amazing performances, setting the mood for the audience that even went wild when Vice Ganda came out in her flamboyant outfit .Vice invited guests on stage and was thrilled with the love and energy of the audience, saying that they upstaged her horsepower level!

Manitoba Government Extends Application Deadline for $100-Million Arts, Culture, and Sport Fund

The Manitoba government has announced an extension of the application deadline for the Arts, Culture and Sport in Community Fund. Sport, Culture and Heritage Minister Obby Khan made the announcement, stating that the fund supports Manitoba's arts, culture, and sport sectors by investing up to $100 million in local organizations to develop innovative community projects. The Small Capital Grants and Special Initiatives Program application

deadline has been extended to April 24, while the Large Capital Grants Program deadline has been pushed back to May 1.

Organizations applying for the Small Capital Grants and Special Initiatives Program can receive between 50% and 100% of eligible expenses, depending on the overall project cost. The grant aims to improve volunteer and equipment development, training, organizational development opportunities, and increase participation and engagement

in arts, culture, or sport programming. Groups applying for the Large Capital Projects can receive up to 50% of eligible expenses over $300,000 to $5 million to enhance the quality, accessibility, and availability of local facilities that support arts, culture, and amateur sport activities and programs. All applicants will receive a confirmation email within a week of submission. If they do not receive it, they should contact the ACSC program team at ACSC@ gov.mb.ca or 1-866-626-4862.

House Speaker Romualdez Calls for Increased Bilateral Talks with US on Economic Issues

counterpart, US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, in the US Capitol on Wednesday night, accompanied by other Philippine lawmakers and the Philippine Ambassador to the US, Jose Manuel Romualdez.

SWS survey reveals growing number of OFWs

Around 7% of adult Filipinos are looking for work abroad, according to a recent survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations (SWS). The survey asked 1,200 Filipinos aged 18 and above in person from December 10 to 14, 2022, if they or their family members were currently working overseas.

In December 2022, the Philippine Statistics Authority said that there were 1.83 million OFWs around the world in the April to September period of 2021. Around 800,000 more were deployed in 2022 as reported by the Department of

Migrant Workers. The SWS also found that 75% of households with Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) received remittances.

Remittances are crucial to the Philippine economy, totaling $5.33 billion since the start of the year, with record remittances of $32.14 billion collected in 2022. In February, migrant workers sent back $2.57 billion to their families.

Meanwhile, two out of 10 Filipinos (17%) said they were hoping to live abroad.

Perceived deficiencies in basic education have led colleges and universities in the Philippines to continue offering general education classes, even though these subjects are already taught in senior high school, according to lawmakers during a joint House hearing with members of EDCOM 2. The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) initially removed 38 to 48 units of required general education classes when the K to 12 program began, but colleges and universities added back courses as "remediation for the deficiencies of basic education," resulting in most degree programs still lasting four years. CHED Chairperson Popoy De Vera stated that CHED faced pushback from industry professionals and other groups when attempting to trim down the curriculum of various degree programs.

The joint House hearing, led by the basic and higher education committees, aimed to align the priorities of CHED and the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2), which

is conducting a comprehensive review of the education system three decades after the first EDCOM was created. The Department of Education has been conducting an ongoing review of senior high and has found a curriculum that is overstuffed with content but lacking in several prerequisites for essential learning competencies, according to Vice President Sara Duterte, who concurrently serves as the education chief.

During the discussion, EDCOM 2 members asked CHED Chairperson De Vera to explain why several college degree programs still require four years of study despite the reduced number of general education classes in senior high. He stated that technical panels for other degree programs are still evaluating whether to reduce the number of required units. However, De Vera also noted that CHED has faced pushback from professional associations that want to maintain the integrity of the curriculum, and he personally supports downsizing college curriculums.

During the press launch of a beauty brand that she endorses, Beauty talked about her experience at Sundance and hinted at her upcoming project. She mentioned that she will be working abroad and that the movie she worked on was already bought

by Amazon, with a release date in July or June.

What makes her project even more special for her is that it will be shot in the same house that was featured in the classic Filipino World War II movie "Oro Plata Mata." Beauty is a collector of Philippine antiques and contemporary arts and loves being the caretaker of her country's history.

Mayor Bullet Jalosjos of Dapitan, who is also the Chief Finance Officer of TAPE Inc., the production company behind the Philippines' longestrunning noontime variety show, "Eat Bulaga," confirmed that the show's mainstays Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon (TVJ) will continue to host the program despite undergoing a "rebonding" process. In an interview with Boy Abunda, Jalosjos addressed the rumors about the Jalosjos family's takeover of the production company.

Jalosjos clarified that there was no takeover, and the Jalosjos family had always been the major stockholder of the company. He explained that Tony Tuviera, the show's producer, had retired last March. Jalosjos's

father, Romeo Jalosjos, had asked Tuviera to stay longer, but Tuviera decided to step down, which Romeo agreed to. Jalosjos further noted that he and his sister Soraya had been on the board of directors for around four years but did not actively participate in the company's affairs until now. Jalosjos emphasized that the show's "rebonding" involves the family's involvement in the show and the company, immersing themselves in the show's operations. He admitted that they had a difficult time building relationships and earning the production's trust at first. However, TVJ and Tuviera guided and assisted them in their journey as the board of the company.
