POINT OF VIEW

MARTIN DE GRAAFF

FIM Europe President

It’s strange for me to write the last Point of View in our FIM Europe Magazine, after four years as President and eight years as Deputy President. A beautiful period with good experiences and during the last few years with all troubles around the pandemic and the last months with the terrible war in Ukraine.

this shows the real idea of the possibilities inside our FIM Family. Thank you to the FRM – the Romanian Federation – for the commitment and the efforts. Many Federations will show up at this occasion to meet each other and to elect the President and the Management Council for the next period of four years.

After two years with a lot of restrictions in the sporting calendars, this season activities are well-planned. A busy program for all involved people and federations, full calendars, many participants in most events and beautiful races. Occasionally, a new start for many riders and organizers. Motorcycling in general seems to be more popular than ever.

I can look back to a very positive time with many friends in this family. Thanks to all commissions’ members, organizers and Federations, promoters and stakeholders, colleagues from FIM and FIM Europe. Thanks to the staff of FIM Europe in Fiumicino: the Management Council was able to be in good contact with all involved partners and riders. You have done a great job. I’m sure that the work will go on with the new Management Council and my successor.

The FIM Europe Congress in Bucharest will be important after two years without delegates from Federations. Luckily, we could organize two General Assemblies within FIM Congresses:

Good luck to all of you! Thank you!

EDITORIAL DALILA AGRATI FIM Europe Press Officer

Dear readers,

6

Here we are at the second issue of the brand new FIM Europe Magazine. These months have been very intense. After two tough years, this racing season finally took off and the all the European Championships and Cups were back in action on track with riders and fans, ready to live this 2022 with excitement. We were ready to live again our ordinary life, the one we all so much missed and we were waiting for. But, after the difficulties of Covid, another battle started: it’s a real war, that of Russia against Ukraina.

cycle Federation of Russia (MFR) and the Belarusian Federation of Motorcycle Sport (BFMS), the issuance of FIM Europe licences and the ones already distributed, the functions of persons as Officials and as Commissions members. As a result, no Russian and Belarusian riders, teams and officials can take part in any events and activities. A clear and correct sign of closeness towards Ukraine. Sport took a position, a path, and with determination follows it, stronger than anything, with the aim of bringing some serenity and hope in this difficult time.

An absurd and senseless war, which can only leave pain behind. The FIM Europe, together with the FIM, condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine with some decisions. First of all, to cancel any activities in Russia, Bielorussia and Ukraine. Therefore, to suspend, for the Motor-

This FIM Europe Magazine has a special supplement: a few days ago, the FIM Europe Congress was held in Bucharest. After a two-year break, it was exciting to meet you again, colleagues but above all FRIENDS. The Congress marked the end of the 2018-2022

mandate: my first four years with you. I would like to sincerely thank Alessandro Sambuco and Martin de Graaff, who will forever be my first “Mr President”. I learned a lot with him and I will keep this experience in my heart. Now another new adventure begins, with a new President with whom I share many passions (Enduro above all!) and from whom I know I can learn a lot more. Congratulations to Michal Sikora, my new President! In the end, I would like to thank the Romanian Federation for their enormous efforts and dedication in preparing the Congress. A real organizational machine, that planned and prepared every day in detail: you have done an amazing job with an outstanding result! The baton passes to the Spanish Federation and I’m already looking forward to seeing again the great FIM Europe family!

INTERNAL AUDIT AND MANAGEMENT COUNCIL MEETING IN SORRENTO

The splendid Sorrento Peninsula hosted the Internal Audit on April 6th and the FIM Europe Management Council Meeting on April 7th. The particular location celebrated these last two official appointments before the elective Congress in Bucharest which will mark the end of this 2018-2022 mandate. The evocative views, however, did not distract the Internal Auditors, the Financial Department and the Members of the Management Council from completing these important moments of FIM Europe with the usual professionalism and attention.

8

MARTIN DE GRAAFF

“On Thursday the Management Council had the last meeting of the mandate of four years, the day prior to this meeting the Internal Auditors controlled the Financial situation of 2021. In this special meeting of the MC all reports were discussed: the report of the President, the first Deputy President Michal Sikora (Sporting issues), the second Deputy President Silvio Manicardi (Beyond Sport issues), the Treasurer Juhani Halme and the Internal Auditors. In a very good atmosphere we could look back at the last four years, difficult years, caused by the pandemic and this year with the terrible war, destroying many activities and the bad situation in Ukraine. For that reason, Internal Auditor Vadym Kopilov could not take part in our meetings. Important was the information concerning the coming very important FIM Europe Congress, with elections and appointment of Commission Chairmen and Members, in July in Bucharest. The information will be sent very soon to all Federations”.

FIM Europe President

“As usual, the work of the Beyond Sporting Commissions has been presented in details to the Management Council. In between the others, worth of attention is the decision to restart the Tour Assistant Training that will be held in Spain the first week of October. Details will be published in the next days. Also worth of note is the progress of the study on the potential integration of ePTWs in future touring events, study performed together with the University of Florence. Regarding environment the new Environmental Check list is fully operational. This will allow a better understanding of our environmental performance on the different circuits. I hope that the actual health and political situation will allow us to perform our duties in the best manner as possible”.

FIM Europe 1st Deputy President

“Together with my colleague Tapio Nevala and with the participation of the Treasurer Juhani Halme and Silvia Monatti and Andrea Diamantini for the Financial Department, we carried out our job as Auditors. We regret the absence of the Auditor Vadym Kopylov because of the war in his Country. Thanks to the Financial Department all the bookkeeping operations are correct. It was not easy to close the 2021 accounts with a positive result being in a COVID period”.

LAURENT DELBROEK Chairman of the Auditors

10

ALESSANDRO SAMBUCO FIM Europe Secretary General

“It should be emphasized that the 2021 account result, with a positive sign, obtained despite the economic difficulties linked to the COVID-19 epidemic, is a team result. It is in fact necessary to thank all the members of our organization, from the Management Council to the General Secretariat, from the Chairmen of the Commissions to the Presidents of the Jury, for having implemented the restrictions and recommendations and then applied them in practice. Only this unanimous behaviour meant that the expenses that could be contained were contained and that the result of the 2021 budget had a positive sign. Special thanks go to the Financial Department for its discipline and consistency in applying all possible attention to keep the accounts under control.

HUNGARY TO HOST ROUND 2 #02 ROUND

02ND - 03RD APRIL

In Tamasi, Belgian Erik Willems won again ahead of Englishman Daniel Mundell and thus extended his lead in the European Championship. His toughest rival was Daniel Mundel, but he could not keep up the Belgian's pace in the cross test. In the end, after 12 special test, his gap added up to 30 seconds, just half a minute. In the E1 class, reigning champion Maurizio Micheluz switched from the Husqvarna two-stroke to the fourstroke. Once more the Italian won the class and rode to sixth place in the overall standings.

Overjoyed, day's winner Dietger Damiaens from Belgium received the victory trophy in Hungary. Frenchman David Abgrall proved to be his fiercest adversariy this time: without any mistakes, he repeatedly steered his Sherco almost to Damiaens' times, but in the end he was just 18 seconds off. On the second day of the 2022 Borilli Enduro European Championship, the riders initially fought more against the weather than against the times: snow had fallen overnight in Hungary, making the track particularly slippery. In the end, almost a quarter of riders did not finish. Previous day's winner Erik Willems had a dragging front brake, which sometimes blocked at the most inopportune moment. But there was not much time to change the brake system: he finished sixth overall, defending his lead in the championship. Right behind Maurizio Micheluz, the reigning champion of the two-stroke class. This time he started with a four-stroke bike, but even if he was not so happy with the choice, he admitted that the conditions had also been particularly difficult. In the seniors, the Italian Alessandro Rizzo proved to be uncatchable even with the 125cc: at the halfway point of the season he has won all days. In the women's category former motocross rider Nieve Holmes rode so strongly in the enduro test that she could compensate over one-minute of delay.

Erik Willems I also crashed in the first enduro test, which cost me a lot of time. The distance was shortened today, so there weren't enough special tests to recover

Day 1 The 100 km long prologue kept its promises and delivered some amazing moments high in adrenaline and tension. The rocky terrain was an extra challenge for both men and bikes. An accident occurred in the SSV category caused some delays, but soon the race continued. Day 2 The race took off in the beautiful village of Clementi, located on the green slopes of Mount Ziria at an altitude of 960 meters. Participants raced across 340 km passing near the beautiful Dassiou Lake. The beautiful sunny weather gave a magical image to the vast spruce forest. Day 3 Day 3 has been cancelled from the organizers due to safety reasons. All participants had the occasion to rest and enjoy sun and sea at beautiful Loutraki. Day 4 Probably the longest and warmest day for all riders. Hundreds of screaming engines blasted through one of the most unique locations Greece has to offer, on their way to Itea, where the temporary bivouac was located. The Special Test of the day was 330 km long and all participants had to try their best as there would no mechanical support in Itea. Day 5 Toughest day: many participants didn’t reach the finish line of the rocky route.

Day 6 The sixth day of the Hellas Rally Raid was the chance for most of the participants to sign a better performance and ameliorate their ranking. Again, riders raced through amazing mountainous landscapes and vast forests but had to face very high temperatures of almost 36 degrees. RUIZ AND BERGAMINI SHARED HONOURS IN OPENING ROUND #02 ROUND

08TH - 10TH APRIL

Yeray Ruiz and Denis Bergamini were the first winners of the 2022 Yamaha R3 bLU cRU European Cup at MotorLand Aragón, with the Italian and Spaniard both sharing the championship lead, having also scored third-place finishes. Having qualified on pole position in Superpole session, Spanish youngster Ruiz maintained his lead by the end of the first lap, before Brazil’s Enzo Valentim hit the front on the second tour. Seven riders were involved in the lead battle for the opening five laps, but as they headed onto the sixth, Ruiz and Valentim pulled clear. The two constantly swapped places through the closing stages, but it was 18-year-old Ruiz who would eventually take victory, beating his 17-year-old rival by 0.273s across the line to win on debut. Bergamini won the titanic battle for third, with Brazil’s Kevin Fontainha and Spain’s Marc Vich less than a tenth behind. Italian rider Andrea Pizzoli headed Slovakia’s Maxim Repak for sixth, while Indonesian youngster Wahyu Nugroho in eighth. French rider Clément Rougé and Free Practice pace-setter Eduardo Burr of Brazil rounded out the top 10.

ARAGON, SPAIN

In Race 2 of the Yamaha R3 bLU cRU Eropean Cup, a mammoth battle for victory saw 12 riders in the fight throughout the nine-lap contest. Ruiz and Valentim looked to have the pace again early on, but Repak, Bergamini, Fontainha, Nugroho, Gustavo Manso and Pizzoli were all able to force their way to the front of the pack. Heading onto the back straight on the final lap, Bergamini made his move, with Fontainha and Pizzoli chasing him right to the line. The three were split by thousandths of a second, but the 19-year-old Italian held on for victory. Fontainha was second, with Pizzoli handed a penalty for track limits on the final lap, seeing Ruiz promoted to third. Nugroho just missed out on a podium in fourth, ahead of Repak and Valentim. Vich was seventh, with Pizzoli classified in eighth after the penalty, ahead of fellow countryman Diego Palladino and Brazil’s Manso. The top 10 were separated by just 0.469s at the finish, showing just how competitive the Yamaha R3 bLU cRU European Cup will be in 2022.

#02 ROUND It was a perfect weekend for Brazilian youngster Enzo Valentim, who doubled up in the second round of the 2022 Yamaha R3 bLU cRU European Cup at the TT Circuit Assen, picking up the maximum 50 points and leaving the Dutch venue on top of the standings. In Race 1, France’s Gregory Carbonnel and fellow Brazilian Kevin Fontainha joined Valentim on the podium, with his compatriot finishing runner-up in Race 2, in which Italy’s Andrea Pizzoli rounded out the top three. Having gone fastest in the Free Practice session, Valentim took pole position by 1.1s, with Brazilian Gustavo Manso and Pizzoli joining him on the front row for both of Saturday’s races, while Thai rider Krittapat Keankum also enjoyed his best qualifying performance in fourth. As Valentim took the victory, several riders went wide at the final chicane, with Carbonnel classified in second, ahead of 15-year-old Fontainha. In the final laps, the top nine riders were all in contention for victory, but it was 2021 bLU cRU Masterclass winner Pizzoli who timed it perfectly, crossing the line for his maiden win in front of his home crowd. Manso came close to his first victory, finishing just 0.025s behind in second; his best result in the Cup so far. Bergamini made it two Italians on the podium in third, with Emanuele Cazzaniga impressing on his wildcard debut in fourth. Czech rider Filip Juranek scored what was his best result of the season in fifth, ahead of wildcard entrant Emiliano Ercolani. Valentim dropped to eighth on the final lap, finishing behind Spain’s Marc Vich, with Indonesia’s Wahyu Nugroho and Poland’s Jurand Kusmierczyk rounding out the top 10. With the grid reset for Race 2, Pizzoli once again led the other 27 riders away, this time holding onto his lead as they completed the opening

Pizzoli had regained the lead on the final lap and looked to breakaway, but as they headed into the final sector, Valentim muscled his way to the front. The Brazilian held his nerve through the final corner, but compatriot Kevin Fontainha and Juranek were able to pull alongside as they approached the finish line. Just 0.032s separated the top three finishers, with Valentim narrowly ahead of Fontainha and Juranek, the latter besting his Race 1 result for his maiden podium. 26TH - 29TH MAY

“After two years without the European Championship all fans looked forward to watch the exciting races again on the beautiful Santa Pod race track. The number of fans showed us how they missed it. Together with the 1st Deputy President Michal Sikora I enjoyed the spectacular races with small differences in the running times and high speed at the finish of the quarter mile (about 400 m). Drag Racing Commission Chairman Mr Job Heezen renewed his contacts with the riders and was happy with the technical development in this sport. Important for the Federations is the promotion of Dragrace, encouraging riders to take part in this Championship. All riders have done a lot to make their bike faster. Many new bikes are developed by top technicians to reach a faster run than the last years. The CEO of Santa Pod, Mr Keith Bartlett, did what was important to entertain all fans of motorsport and both races of cars and motorbikes were a great success”.
