New Delhi/Mumbai:

Soon after Income Tax officials reached the BBC offices in Delhi and Mumbai for a “survey”, weeks after a huge controversy over the UK national broadcaster’s documentary series on PM Narendra Modi and allegations linked to the 2002 Gujarat riots, Opposition took potshots at the Centre, and called the action ‘predictable’, ‘a sign of panic’, and a hint that ‘their end is near’.

However, the BJP came down heavily on the British broadcaster, calling it “the most corrupt organisation in the world”. The ruling party also attacked Congress, saying it supports ‘anti-India’ narratives.

“If any company or organisation is working in India, they have to comply with the Indian law. Why are you scared if you are adhering to the law? The IT department should be allowed to do their work. BBC is the most corrupt organisation in the world. BBC propaganda matches with Congress agenda,” BJP’s national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said at a presser.

WHO IS PRATIMA BHOUMIK

Shah said the BJP is seeking a mandate to make the state prosperous in the next five years, building on the development initiatives of the party-led government.

While Nagaland and Meghalaya will go to polls on February 27, all eyes are on Tripura which goes to polls on February 16. However, on March 2, the outcome will be known.

In all three states, the saffron party is in power. BJP is the ruling party in Tripura and it is also part of the ruling coalition in Nagaland and Meghalaya.

WHAT DOES

BJP FEEL

The Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, said the BJP-led alliance in Tripura will increase its seats and also vote share in the upcoming Assembly elections in the state. He said adding that the saffron party would have attained a majority in polls before noon on the counting day to form the government in the state.

In an interview given to ANI, Shah took a dig at the Opposition in Tripura and said the Congress and Left parties have formed an alliance in the state as they have accepted that they can’t defeat BJP alone.

“We will increase our seats and also our vote share in Tripura. Congress and the Communist party have come together as they have accepted that they can’t defeat BJP alone. We will form a government with full majority in the state,” Shah.

Expressing confidence,

“We eliminated violence in Tripura and also took strict action against drug business from across the border in the state,” he said.

WILL CROSS MAJORITY

MARK BY NOON?

Asked about the possibility of a hung Assembly in Tripura, Shah said the constituencies in Tripura are small and “you will see that before 12 pm on counting day, the BJP would have crossed the majority mark.”

CHALO PALTAI

SLOGAN…

“‘Chalo Paltai’ slogan was given to change the situation in Tripura, and today we’ve done that. Earlier when the Left was in power in the state, government employees were paid under the 5th Pay Commission, but we implemented the 7th Pay commission without increasing fiscal deficit,” he added.

The BJP created a record in 2018 by ousting the Left Front government which ruled Tripura for 35 years from way back in 1978. The state will go to the polls on February 16 for its 60-member Assembly.

The BJP is contesting in 55 seats while its ally Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) is contesting in the remaining five seats.

WHAT ANALYSTS FEEL?

Analysts, however, believe that it will be a three-cornered election, with the Left-Congress alliance re-emerging in

India has valid reason to be excited about its defence production and exports. At the Aero India 2023, in which over 80 countries and 800 defence companies are taking part, Prime Minister Narendra Modi explained why India should be proud of its defence sector’s growth. From the present $1.5 billion defence exports to 75 countries, the country aims to touch $5 billion in another two years from now. That’s a quantum jump for a country which was among the largest importers of defence equipment.

HRANGKHAWL SPEAK

In case of a deadlock with no alliance or party able to gain majority in the ensuing threecornered elections to the Tripura assembly, the Tipra Motha may stake claim to form government, its president Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl said.

The regional party, which has been attracting large numbers of adherents in the state’s tribal areas, is also willing to give outside support to any party or alliance (either the BJP or the Congress-Left combine) that manages to form government,

The focus is on Pratima Bhoumik, 53, the Union minister of state for social justice and empowerment, who has been fielded in the Tripura Assembly elections by BJP. Pratima, a sitting member of the Lok Sabha, became the first minister from Tripura in the Union ministry. The state had remained unrepresented in the Union council of ministers until her induction. Sources said she has been fielded to give a message to the people of the state that she could be a candidate for the post of chief ministership.

WHAT ABOUT MANIK SAHA?

There is no denying the fact that the current Chief Minister, Manik Saha, enjoys popularity but the matter of fact is the Biplab-Pratima combination that continues to be the dominant force in the state BJP. The party leadership has “played” its trump card deftly by fielding Pratima as this will perhaps give the Biplab faction a certain amount of good stature. Meanwhile, even as the BJP is locked in a tough three-cornered fight in the state and if it manages to pull through, will Tripura see the first woman Chief Minister?

Stay tuned till March 2.

(LCA) Tejas, artillery guns, missiles like Akash and Astra, battle tanks, anti-tank mines and explosives. Besides these there are several other items on the export list in India’s fabulous journey. The list of items meant for export would get significantly longer once the DRDO is able to sort out delays affecting some of its programmes which will also cut down India’s defence import budget.

Tejas Mark2 LCA and its naval version, unmanned aerial vehicles, light machine guns and advanced towed artillery gun systems. According to MoS for Defence Ajay Bhatt, out of 55 high priority projects with DRDO, 23 have been delayed. Though a significant number, the delays can surely be overcome.

It was an oral observation made by Justice DY Chandrachud but it must have warmed the cockles of Arvind Kejriwal’s heart. On the eligibility of nominated members to vote in the Delhi’s mayoral election Justice Chandrachud told Sanjay Jain, the Additional Solicitor General representing Delhi Lieutenant Governor, “Nominated members should not vote. That’s very well settled. It is very clear Mr Jain.” The court was hearing a petition filed by the Aam Aadmi Party leader Shelly Oberoi seeking early elections for the post of mayor. The BJP which was trounced by AAP in the Delhi Municipal Corporation elections was insisting that its Aldermen be allowed to vote for mayor. The AAP blamed L-G for throwing his weight behind the BJP.

As the Supreme Court was busy, the hearing has been postponed for a date after February 17. But the oral observation sent AAP into cheer. Party MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj tweeted, “Today the Supreme Court has made it clear—Nominated Councillors cannot vote…”

New Delhi (Agencies): India is observing the fourth anniversary of the ghastly Pulwama terror attacks on Tuesday in which 40 of our brave CRPF jawans were martyred triggering a nationwide outrage and despair.

In Pulwama district, a suicide bomber attacked a group of vehicles carrying security personnel on the Jammu Srina-

gar National Highway.

As a result of the attack, 40 jawans of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were killed.

To commemorate the memory of these soldiers, a memorial was set up inside a CRPF camp adjacent to the place where Jaish-eMohammad terrorist Adeel Ahmed Dar, drove an explosive-laden car and blew himself next to a CRPF convoy.

In response to Pakistan, the Indian Airforce on Feb 26, 2019, attacked a terrorist camp in the Balakot region in which several terrorists were killed in the attack.

BBC’s bureaus raided in New Delhi and Mumbai on Tuesday

New Delhi: Income Tax officials searched the BBC’s Delhi and Mumbai offices today and seized phones and laptops, weeks after a massive controversy over the UK national broadcaster’s documentary on PM Narendra Modi and the deadly sectarian riots in Gujarat in 2002. The taxmen sealed off the offices for a “survey” linked to alleged diversion of profits and irregularities in transfer pricing involving the BBC. The survey will continue at least till tomorrow and the officials are expected to search all night at the offices. Sources say, the Income Tax authorities are checking account details dating as far back as 2012.

“The Income Tax Authorities are currently at the BBC offices in New Delhi and Mumbai and we are fully cooperating. We hope to have this situation resolved as soon as possible,” the BBC tweeted. The officials used the keyword “tax” to search for information on the desktops after asking employees to log in, a BBC journalist told sources.

ALL INDIA BAR ASSO WELCOMES TAX SURVEY OF BBC OFFICES

New Delhi (ANI): The All India Bar Association (AIBA) on Tuesday congratulated the Income Tax Department for conducting surveys of BBC’s documents to check irregularities relating to international taxation and Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) transactions. Senior Advocate and Chairman of AIBA, Dr Adish C Aggarwala, in a statement, has welcomed the action of the Income Tax Department as earlier the AIBA has requested Union Home Minister Amit Shah to order a 360-degree probe into the “international conspiracy” angle in BBC’s documentary on PM Narendra Modi. On January 22, amidst the row over British national broadcaster, BBC’s documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the AIBA demanded Home Ministry initiate a special investigation into the “international conspiracy” angle.

LEFT PARTIES SLAM CENTRE OVER RAIDS

New Delhi (PTI): CPI(M) hit out at the Centre over IT “raids” on BBC offices in Delhi and Mumbai, questioning if India remains the “mother of democracy”.

CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury also slammed the government for not accepting the opposition demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee probe into the Adani Group issue. CPI MP Binoy Viswam, on the other hand, said the “IT survey” was the attempt of a “frightened government” to “strangle” the voice of truth.

New Delhi (PTI): The BJP on Tuesday accused the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) of unleashing “venomous” reporting against India and alleged that its propaganda and the Congress’ agenda go together. Hitting out at the London-headquartered public broadcaster, he said the BBC is the “most corrupt” organisation in the world and the Congress should remember that former prime minister Indira Gandhi had also banned the broadcaster. The BJP leader further claimed that the BBC has a “tainted and black history of working with malice against India”. “BBC propaganda and Congress agenda go together. Congress should remember that its own leader and former prime minister Indira Gandhi had imposed a ban on the BBC,” he said.

‘UNDECLARED EMERGENCY’: OPPOSITION CRITICISES CENTRE AFTER TAX SURVEY

New Delhi (Agencies): Opposition parties on Tuesday said that India was in a state of “undeclared emergency” after Income Tax Department officials conducted a “survey operation” at the Mumbai and Delhi offices of British broadcaster BBC. Tax officials told PTI that the operation was being carried out as part of a tax evasion investigation. In a survey, the Income Tax Department only searches the business premises of a company and not the homes and other locations of its promoters or directors. The government has used emergency powers available under the Information Technology Rules, 2021to issue directions to YouTube and Twitter to block clips of the documentary from being shared. The foreign ministry has described the documentary as “a propaganda piece designed to push a particular discredited narrative”. On Tuesday, the Congress said on its Twitter handle that an “undeclared emergency” prevailed in the country as the documentary has been banned in India, and now the Income Tax Department has taken action against the BBC.

Next gen polls behind appointment of 5 governors

Mahesh Sharma

New Delhi: President Draupadi Murmu has appointed new governors in 13 states. Some new governors have been appointed and some governors have been transferred. Now except for a few Union Territories, governors have been appointed eve-

rywhere. So, as per new list now, eastern Uttar Pradesh has dominance among the governors.

A total of five governors or deputy governors have been appointed from the eastern part of Uttar Pradesh. This is a sign of a greater imbalance. There is no governor from many states, while there are

one or two governors from many big states. But five governors from one part of Uttar Pradesh are in different

states or union territories of the country.

Among the new governors, two names are from Uttar Pradesh and

both are from Eastern Uttar Pradesh. Veteran BJP leader and former Union Minister of State for Finance Shiv Pratap Shukla, who hails from Gorakhpur, has been made the Governor of Himachal Pradesh.

Apart from him, Laxman Prasad Acharya of Varanasi, the constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been made the governor of Sikkim. Prior to this, three people from Eastern Uttar Pradesh are

already Governor or Deputy Governor. Manoj Sinha is the Deputy Governor of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Kalraj Mishra, a veteran BJP leader, is the Governor of Rajasthan. Both Manoj Sinha and Kalraj Mishra are residents of Ghazipur. Fagu Chauhan, a resident of Azamgarh, who was the Governor of Bihar, has been removed from there and made the Governor of Meghalaya.

Top party functionaries came from Jaipur and eventually expelled her and her corporator husband, Rakesh Bhati, from the BJP.

Why Samit couldn’t ‘sum-it’ in WCD Department?

First India Bureau

Jaipur: A young IAS officer of 2004 batch, Samit Sharma, Secretary Social Justice Department, is once again in the ‘limelight’ as the DoP has taken back the reins of the Women and Child Development Department (WCD) from him within a month. The additional charge of the department was handed to Samit on the retirement of Dinesh Yadav, the department’s former secretary and now this responsibility has been given to Principal Secretary, Cooperatives, Sreya Guha.

On the surface, this move is believed to be DoP’s routine administrative action, however, there is more to this than meets the eye.

Firstly, it is a rare and bizarre development that some Secretary is given an additional charge in haste and then it is rolled back and handed over to another Secretary. The stubbornness to better the existing system and the corresponding ‘tussle’ with the minister proved to be costly to Sharma. The WCD provides free nutritious food across the State to about 28 lakh children to im-

prove their immunity.

For this, a budget of Rs 1,000 crore has been set aside, which has some part paid by the Government of India as well. This herculean task of feeding the children is done through 62,000 centres spread across the

State and more than 3000 female supervisors and project officers have been appointed for it.

Last month, Dholpur Collector Anil Agrawal brought to Samit Sharma’s notice, a corruption issue in WCD. It was told, with evidence,

STORY SO FAR...

S amit Sharma sent the file to Minister Mamta Bhupesh with the recommendation to suspend the concerned female supervisor and the Minister returned the file with the remark that the investigation should be conducted again. But Samit Sharma again wrote that the Collector has already conducted an investigation and there is no need or logic in re-investigating the matter.

that out of the approved quantity, only 25-30 percent goods have reached the centres, while the receipts show the complete quantity. The Collector, after conducting an investigation at his level and being satisfied with the findings, wrote

about the corruption and the State employees involved in it with a recommendation to take action against them. Samit Sharma sent the file to Minister Mamta Bhupesh with the recommendation to suspend the concerned

female supervisor and the Minister returned the file with the remark that the investigation should be conducted again. But Samit Sharma again wrote that the Collector has already conducted an investigation and there is no need or logic in re-investigating the matter.

However, the second time, the file did not even return from the Minister, rather the additional charge was taken from Samit Sharma.

Word in the bureaucracy is that even before this, there has been a tussle between Minister Mamta Bhupesh and

Samit Sharma on transparency in the procurement of goods and about streamlining the system. The Secretary wanted that the purchase and distribution of goods from NAFED should be done online. Sharma had received corruption-related complaints from half a dozen districts and hence, Sharma wanted to add new conditions in new supply orders.

However, now that Samit Sharma is no more at the helm, all responsibility falls on Sreya Guha who in the past, from April 2021 to 2022 has handled the reins of WCD.

DEALING WITH IN-LAWS

good relationship with my in-laws.”

At times, the in-laws constantly interfere giving unsolicited advice.

Conflict with inlaws may be an interesting topic for comedians, but in real life, it is not a laughing matter. “For years, my mother-in-law interfered in our marriage,” says a wife. “Often, I vented my anger on my husband because I could not do that to his mother. It seemed as if he constantly had to choose between being a good husband and being a good son.”

Why do some in-laws interfere in the lives of their married children? It may be difficult for them to see someone young and inexperienced become responsible for taking care of their son or daughter. Another reason could be, parents who have sacrificed for and nurtured their children may feel that they are being sidelined. Also, they could be genuinely worried that their son or daughter lacks the wisdom to make marriage a success.

Sometimes, the in-laws are invited to interfere.

One husband says, “my wife came from a closeknit family where everyone discussed things openly. So, after we got married, she would consult her father on deci-

sions that were ours to make. I was hurt that she would go to him instead of discussing with me.” Issues with in-laws can put much strain. It is a challenge if one partner is overly attached to his or her parents. “My wife felt that if we didn’t live near her parents, she would be disloyal to them, and when our son was born, my parents came to visit every day, which made my wife stressed. This caused a number of conflicts between us,” says a husband. Marriage implies more

than merely living together. It means that a husband and wife form a new family — one that takes priority over their families of origin. Both husband and wife still need to honour their parents. What if the way one handles that responsibility leaves the other partner feeling ignored or neglected?

Looking at the situation objectively helps. For example, it helps to ask oneself, “Is my partner really too attached or could it be that I simply do not have the same type of re-

lationship with my parents? What bearing does my family background have on my view of the situation? Is it jealousy?”

An honest self-examination of these questions will show if there really is an in-laws problem or a marriage problem.

In-laws’ issues are a constant source of contention between the marriage partners. Many problems arise because partners do not share the same view of a matter. Can one try to see things from his/her partner’s perspective?

That is what a husband did. “My wife was raised in a negative family environment, so I refused to have any association with my in-laws. This caused conflict between us because my wife still wanted to be close to her family.”

In time, this husband took a balanced position on the matter. He said, “I knew that too much contact with her parents had a negative effect on my wife emotionally, no contact at all, could also lead to problems. I have tried to restore and maintain a

“The first ten years of our marriage were spent with my husband’s family. Conflicts arose continually over how children should be raised as well as over my cooking and cleaning. I talked to my husband and my mother-in-law about it, but this only led to more conflict,” says a wife.

Some couples establish appropriate boundaries with their parents. Also, in a spirit of empathy, one can try to discern the motive behind the seeming intrusion. Often, it is just a matter of making it clear by one’s actions that one’s partner comes first in one’s life. One husband says, “even if parents express their views, don’t just agree right away, since you are building a new family unit. So first find out how your partner feels about the advice.”

“My mother-in-law often says, ‘I miss my boy so much!’ She talks about how close they were, which makes me feel guilty for marrying him and causing her heartache,” says a wife.

One of the basic tasks of marriage is creating or renewing a sense of solidarity with one’s partner. It also involves developing a sense of ‘we-ness’.

A husband and a wife, in a spirit of teamwork, together can brainstorm ways to address each other’s concerns. Having inlaws is like having two new friends, whether one likes it or not, they are family!

The day of love is here and we all are looking at ways to dedicate and wish our love this Valentine’s Day. Through City First, I want to convey this message to my wife “In your smile, I see something more beautiful than the stars. I want you. All of you. Your flaws. Your mistakes. Your imperfections. I want you, and only you. Happy Valentine’s day my love.” —YOGESH AND POOJA

This year’s Valentine’s day is the most special one for us. Yesterday we both got engaged and now we are celebrating our first Valentine day as soon-to-be husband and wife. What makes it more special is the presence of our parents by our side and their blessings on us, we are starting this new phase of our lives with one another side by side. Happy Valentine’s day to each and every one celebrating. —SHIFTA ALIM AND SHAH RUKH

Valentine’s day this year is a working one for me as I’m doing a show in Soho House. There is nothing like having your wife in the Audience cheering you on. I love my better half and it can not be put into words. Even tho I am busy I still some time off and planned a dinner and a celebration of each other with a trip to Dubai..

We have had to spend the last two valentines away from each other due to some unavoidable circumstances. So this year when we are together on valentines we will be celebrating the day at our favorite place ever i.e. our home watching our favorite web series along with a glass of wine.

—ANKEETA & ADITYA

I have spent this year’s Valentine’s day with my special one and I can not be happier than this. We went on a lunch date. My dear hubby surprised me with the most romantic gift ever, he reserved my favourite cafeteria and bought me my favourite things. I love him to the moon and back and I pray to god that our love will last forever. I believe on this day, one may memorize the good old days and fantasize about brighter days to come by remaining with each other.

—KAMAL&

I and Nikhil generally do not believe in celebrating love for only one particular day if it’s the love we celebrate it every day but if there’s a day defined as Valentine’s then why not! We plan to coordinate our outfits, we do things that make us both feel that we matter the most to each other. Of course, a candlelight dinner is the best idea.

—HARSHITA & NIKHIL

On February 14, people celebrated the day of love throughout the world. On this day, lovers celebrate and rediscover their love for one another via intimate acts of kindness and more extravagant romantic gestures. However, preparations begin on February 7 and Valentine’s Week is observed over the entire week. Meanwhile, Cupid, the angel of love, is a well-known emblem on Valentine’s Day. The arrow and bow of Cupid symbolize penetrating a heart and casting the spell of love, and he is said to be the son of Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, in Roman mythology. Therefore, the main focus of this celebration is to honour the emotion of love.

For this day, several locations are decorated in red and white. Make your significant other feel special on Valentine’s Day with these special messages. With your loved one, every day is beautiful, and every moment is special.

Every day is Valentines Day with my wife, as she’s the one who has indeed filled my life with positivity and prosperity. Due to work commitments today I won’t be able to spend the day with her but I am going to make sure I make her feel special as soon As I hope. Especially by helping her with house hold chores. A happy wife ensures a happy life!

—TUSHAR

Valentine’s day is a special day for both of us, every year we celebrate our power and love in different ways. This year we decided to cook because we both love food, and to make this day more memorable we cooked our favourite food together to add a touch of romance to it, I decorated our room a bit and enjoyed our candlelight dinner together.
