Once the home of King Charles II and his famous mistress Nell Gwynn, Avington was known as, and remains, Hampshire’s historic party palace. Offering magnificent state rooms for entertaining, luxury accommodation for up to 86 guests, and acres of land for activities, the love of hospitality continues some centuries later!

Quintessentially Hampshire grounds surround the beautiful estate, with two immaculate lawns, styled hedge rows and an abundance of woodland, there is much to explore beyond the house. Set along the banks of the River Itchen, within easy reach of Winchester

and London, this Hampshire estate has it all; with no shortage of incredible spaces and landscapes to enjoy an endless list of activities in. From clay pigeon shooting and archery, to fly fishing, wild swimming or yoga.

Despite its impressive grandeur, every detail has been considered to offer a relaxed and lived-in feel. There are elegant furnishings, hand painted wallpapers, White Company aromatics in the bathrooms and fresh flowers throughout.

Avington Park dates back as far as the year 961, when it was originally a priory for the Monks of Saint Swithun, as recorded in the Domesday Book, until King Henry VIII took the estate for the Tudors and his court. In the mid seventeenth century King Charles II

lived here with his mistress Nell Gwynn, when it became known as his Party Palace. For over 500 years, Avington has been a privatelyowned family estate and remains so.

The crown jewel of Avington is the gleaming Versailles Ballroom, with its ornate gilded ceiling the rooms is flooded with natural light and offers extensive views across rolling parkland and the lake. The largest state room at Avington, it can seat up to 110 guests or up to 100 for a sit-down feast. The ballroom is an exact replica, commissioned by King Charles II, of his quarters in the Palace of Versailles whilst he was in exile.

Surrounded by centuries-old book-lined walls, the stately home’s Library makes for a wonderfully intimate dining and dancing experience, holding up to 180 standing, or 70 guests seated. The early Victorian conservatories are great spaces for dining, surrounded by living walls bursting with jasmine, lemons and lime trees bringing the outside in. With the manicured South Lawn as the backdrop, each can seat 30 for a dinner party or the conservatories can be joined with the sun-drenched orangery to accommodate 200 seated guests.

An unforgettable place for your guests to stay, Avington can accommodate up to 86 guests across the estate. Each individually styled room has been beautifully designed to complement all the

original features with modern amenities – the perfect retreat pre or post party!

With a farm-to-table ethos, private dining and function spaces, it’s the perfect stylish spot to meet and socialise with colleagues, family and friends. Four luxury en-suite bedrooms are also available, in addition to the accommodation on the Avington Estate.

Finally, there’s the estate’s Trout fishery - the oldest and finest in England. Situated on and fed by the gin clear waters of the River Itchin, the fishery was created by the great Sam Holland, a pioneer in the world of still water trout fishing and is renowned for offering some of the best fishing in the country.

The lakes offer an idyllic and tranquil setting for a corporate away day where guests can try their hand at fly-fishing – then end the day with a ‘catch and cook’ style dinner or BBQ. With its sevenbedroom Glass House - Still Waters - and four lakeside cabins. ARTIST JULIJA SALER

Julija Saler is a self-taught artist based in Austria who focuses on the flow of life and on capturing the simplicity that is, on canvas. All the dogmas and imprints that created our thought patterns throughout the years, will be transported and transformed. Who are we, if we let go of all these schemes and get out of the matrix, we created for ourselves throughout many years?

Julijas artwork is somewhat mystical, as it speaks to the viewer in terms of energy and frequency. What we think we are, is what we see and everything that appears and shows up to us, is part of our story. Watching Julijas artwork is like watching clouds – suddenly there will be something that attracts our attention!

Every single piece of Julijas art is a statement that wants to push the viewer into change and healing from within. She is also very keen in bringing materialistic energy into a redistribution.

The shown art pieces are a fusion between Julija and a photographer, working for the artemed foundation, who is providing medical sources to people in Bolivia, Myanmar, and Tanzania. The paintings reveal truth and want to open our senses and hearts. For more information on this project and paintings (the proceeds are, for the most part, contributed to the foundation) contact the artist through her webpage. CROWN TO COUTURE

Kensington Palace, until October 29
26 MAY 2023 OUT & ABOUT

Outfits once worn by Beyonce, Blake Lively, Billy Porter, Nicola Coughlan and Katy Perry populate the rooms of Kensington Palace, as part of a blockbuster new fashion exhibition.

Crown To Couture explores the similarities between fashion and celebrity in the 18th-century court and the red carpet today.

Nearly four years in the making, it’s the biggest exhibition ever put on at Kensington Palace. It brings together over 200 items –ranging from gowns to handbags and jewellery – many of which are instantly recognisable.

There’s the intricate gold embellished outfit and matching headdress by Peter Dundas that pregnant Beyonce wore to perform at the 2017 Grammys; the bright green Christopher John Rogers gown Lady Gaga donned – complete with a face mask – at the 2020 VMAs; and the intricate gold dress actor Billy Porter wore to the 2020 Oscars. Designed by Giles Deacon, the pattern of Porter’s dress was actually inspired by one of the rooms in Kensington Palace.

These are side-by-side with similarly extravagant outfits from the Georgian era – including the gown worn by Lady Helen Robertson in around 1760, which has a nearly three-metre wide skirt.

“We wanted to examine the 18th-century court through the lens of contemporary fashion – because there are so many similarities across the centuries,” Carol Swords, said creative programming and interpretation manager at Historic Royal Palaces.

“As we dug deeper, we realised the Georgian era and the contemporary 21st-century – in terms of spectacle, in terms of

life, in terms of how things are perceived – the red carpet and the Georgian court, there are so many connections.”

Each room is dedicated to a different aspect of attending a big event – from getting ready, to attending court or the red carpet, through to the after-party.

The similarities between the two eras are stark. In the room dedicated to getting ready, Georgian beauty products sit next to a table of modern make-up.

In the 18th-century, upperclass women would invite others to watch them get ready – which could take five or six hours –similar to the way ‘get ready with me’ videos have exploded in popularity on social media.

The King’s Gallery was the place where you wanted to look your best and be seen by others in the 1700s, and now it’s home to some of the most extraordinary outfits of the exhibition.

Many come from the Met Gala. Known as fashion’s biggest night, it’s one of the most important events for celebrities to be seen at every year.

Singer Billie Eilish’s romantic pink Oscar de la Renta gown – inspired by Marilyn Monroe

and worn to the 2021 event – is the first thing you see walking into the room, and is followed by a stream of recognisable looks.

These include singer Lizzo’s structural Thom Browne ensemble (worn to the 2022 Met Gala), model Iris Law’s Moschino gown (2022) and actor Blake Lively’s jaw-dropping Versace homage to New York architecture – worn when she was co-chair of the event in 2022.

Throughout the modern aspects of the exhibition, there’s an emphasis on diversity and inclusion.

Swords explained the curators were keen to make it feel “as relevant as we possibly can”.

She said: “Those questions about diversity, gender, race, everything – we’ve

embodied them, we’ve taken them on and we’ve taken that challenge – but we’ve tried to do it in a really sensitive way.”

Swords points to Beyonce’s Grammys outfit, displayed in the King’s Presence Chamber, flanked by Yeoman Warders either side.

Westminster Security

PERSONAL SECURITY IS A TAX-DEDUCTIBLE EXPENSE

Similarly, a company could invest in office or retail store security, such as CCTV and alarms, security guards, security shutters, etc. even bodyguards for employees in the event of a special threat. Sole traders or limited company directors working from a home-based office could also invest in tax-deductible services and assets to protect themselves from potential threats.

The interpretation of “special threat” is not necessarily prescriptive and introduces a grey area open to interpretation. Therefore, documenting the reasoning for the allowance is essential in case of a subsequent dispute. Businesses can benefit from increased security, improved morale, retention and reputation, productivity, and profits, whilst saving tax by investing in security.

Most company owners and directors are unaware that security expenses are tax-deductible for businesses. While some companies see security as an unnecessary expense, it is essential to protect assets and employees. Investing in security can increase productivity, prevent theft, and protect owners and employees in the event of a robbery or targeted attack. Not only is security a wise investment, but it can also reduce tax liability.

This little-known fact is not widely discussed or published online. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) allows companies to offset their security expenses on services and assets that improve property and personal security against their corporation tax liability. However, some requirements must be met to be eligible for a tax deduction.

The perceived threat and risks must be established from the particular trade or employment, there is no necessity for any direct or impending danger. And the expenditure must be in connection with the use or provision of an asset or service which improves personal security.

CEOs, Directors, and other business executives could invest in a wide range of personal security services and assets, such as close protection, security chauffeurs, residential security guards, security doors and windows, and even a secure panic room if required.

Westminster Security are experts in threat and risk mitigation providing property and personal security in the UK and internationally for high-threat and high-risk business leaders and their families.

EIGHT LANDS ORGANIC VODKA AND GIN

It’s coming up for four years since Eight Lands launched its multi-award-winning vodka and gin. Having spent half that time battling with Covid restrictions along with the rest of us, the team are rightly excited about what lies ahead of them. Alongside a recent a trip to meet customers in California and plans for Japan and Hong Kong in September, the brand is ramping up in its home market with more and more bars and restaurants stocking across the UK.

Alex Christou – who co-founded the brand alongside his stepfather Alasdair Locke –established Eight Lands with the aim of creating a peerless vodka and the perfect London Dry gin. To achieve this, 16 vodka recipes and 16 gin recipes were assessed by industry professionals, bartenders and the Founders’ family and friends over the course of 12 months. Only then were the distillery plans finalised, ensuring it is truly fit-for-purpose. Today, every batch is still signed-off by Alex prior to bottling.

“I genuinely believe that we have created something special with our vodka and gin. Our

commitment to high quality ingredients and processes contributes to the quality of our liquid. What this means is that we can offer a superior vodka and gin to our customers.” says Alex Christou, Co-Founder of Eight Lands.

Made with only organic ingredients and Scottish spring water, Eight Lands vodka and gin are distilled and bottled at the family-owned Glenrinnes Distillery in Speyside. The area, renowned for its pristine Scottish spring water, is home to famous single malt distilleries such as Macallan, Balvenie and Glenfarclas, and considered to be the world’s leading region for luxury spirit production.

“We set out to make vodka and gin of undisputed quality, really thinking about what we wanted to enjoy with our friends,” continues Alex. “Today I am incredibly proud that many more people are discovering Eight Lands vodka and gin in some amazing bars or looking to us to upgrade their cocktails at home.” Eight Lands is served in the likes of Roka, Isabel, Hide, Rules, Sessions Arts Club, Harvey Nichols, and many others, and is available to buy online through all good stockists.

KINGS MAGNA A UNIQUE MIDDLE SCHOOL

“AYear 6 curriculum focused on delivering skills crucial for future success, with no formal SAT testing, fosters curiosity for the important journey into Key Stage 3 and beyond”, says Head of King’s Magna Middle School at Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate (QE), Joseph Birchall.

At QE, our mission is for all members of our community to aspire to the Hill Standard ‘To be the best that I can with the gifts that I have’. As Head of King’s Magna, the middle school of QE’s unique four-school model, we harness this individuality through an innovative curriculum, one which supports the transition between the Collegiate’s primary education at our Preparatory school, Chapter House, and the demands of GCSEs and beyond in our two senior schools.

THE DETAILS

in King’s Magna. At QE, we are committed to equipping our students with the skills and knowledge they need to move seamlessly to our College or Faculty at the end of Year 9, growing and maturing into their teenage years with confidence.

Contrary to the traditional school model where children stay in primary education until the end of Year 6, here at QE students join King’s Magna in Year 6 and stay with us until Year 9. We find many students are ready for a new challenge at the end of Year 5, so we made it our focus to develop a unique curriculum for this transitional year, with content designed in partnership between secondary school subject specialists and highly experienced primary age teachers.

Book a private tour of their North Yorkshire campus, with one of the friendly admissions team. Contact admissions@qe.org or call 01423 333330. Visit qe.org

Importantly, we have made a crucial decision not to assess our Year 6 students using SATS testing. Students are instead assessed formally at three points during the year using standardised and moderated “common evaluation tasks” that are used to track progress and identify what each student can do and what they could do to improve further. This decision allows us to truly focus on delivering what the students need to be successful in Key Stage 3 and beyond.

Our all-encompassing, holistic approach to developing the whole student, creates a supportive, vibrant and caring school environment

Rosemead’s Chair of Governors, Nick Crawford added: ‘This is a wonderful opportunity for both schools. Rosemead and St Dunstan’s have always shared a very similar ethos and this will allow the schools to work closely together to further that. Whilst we will preserve the autonomy of Rosemead, we look forward to sharing best practice, and the many benefits and enhancements this will bring the school.’

The merger comes at an exciting time for the two schools. Last year, St Dunstan’s won Independent Senior School of the Year at the TES Awards, which are known as the Oscars of education, and the College was shortlisted for eight awards at the Independent Schools of the Year Awards, including Pre-Prep and Prep School of the Year. TES Awards’ judge, David James, praised St Dunstan’s, explaining: ‘There’s a very clear and coherent vision of what they want to do, both with the curriculum and the local community.

‘The merger will be a wonderful opportunity for our two schools, one set in the heart of Catford, and the second in the heart of Dulwich, to work closer together, learning from one another and enhancing our students’ educational journeys. THE CASE FOR GOLD COINS

Gold has been a valuable commodity for thousands of years. For Rosland customers, there are many reasons why they continue to put their trust in gold. One of the best ways to build a gold collection is by purchasing gold coins, which offer a range of advantages over other forms of portfolio diversification.

Coins v’s Bars

Coins offer some distinct advantages over bars. They are typically easier to sell due to their smaller size and standardised denominations. They also come with an added level of security, as each coin is individually minted and marked with its denomination and year of issue.

VAT & CGT Free

Gold coins of a certain purity have the unique advantage of being VAT free. Additionally, British legal tender coins are exempt from Capital Gains Tax, meaning you can sell them or pass them on safe in the knowledge that you won’t have to pay a single penny in tax.

Tips for Buying Coins

If you’re interested in purchasing gold coins, here are Rosland’s top tips to help you make an informed decision...

1. Research, Research, Research

Before making any purchase, it’s important to research the types of coins you are interested in buying. Consider the historical significance, the rarity, the minting year,

and the condition of the coins. This will give you a better understanding of the potential value of the coins over time.

2. Buy from a Reputable Dealer

One of the most important things to keep in mind when purchasing gold coins is to buy from a reputable dealer. This ensures that you are getting authentic gold coins that are not counterfeit. Look for a dealer who is wellestablished and has a good reputation.

3. Buy Graded

When buying gold coins, it is important to consider buying graded coins. These coins are evaluated, authenticated, and graded by independent third-party grading services – at Rosland they use PCGS and NGC to grade all their coins.

4. Consider the Rarity

The rarity of the coins can have a significant impact on their value. The rarity of a coin can be determined by factors such as its mintage, its condition, and its historical significance.

5. Store Your Coins Securely

Finally, it is important to store your coins securely to protect your collection. Rosland offer all their clients the option of a storage solution – fully secure and insured all year round.

ARAMONO: THE BEAUTY OF EVERYDAY LIFE

Although you might ordinarily head to Kensington to see world-renowned treasures at one of its many cultural venues, at Japan House London, until 30 June 2023, you can also delight in the beauty and ingenuity of the everyday.

Guests can get a glimpse into daily life in Japan over the last few hundred years through a display of aramono, a term which refers to household goods such as brooms, brushes, dustpans and baskets which are functional, ordinary and well-loved. This free display shows these objects piled high on a full-scale cart as they would have been in the 19th century by a trader selling his wares on the cart, he pulled along himself.

The display also invites guests to learn about the history of aramano. In Japan’s Muromachi period (1336-1573 CE), larger, cheaper daily commodities necessary for daily life became known

as aramono because they were considered to be ‘rough,’ which is the meaning of the word arai. Rooted in a time before plastic and electricity, aramono were made from natural materials, carefully chosen to ensure longevity. There are few differences between the aramono of then and now, and the functionality and durability of these wellmade items carries lessons in design and sustainability that still apply today.

After admiring the everyday beauty of the items on display, you are invited to browse a select range of aramono for sale in the Shop at Japan House London. Whether you’re in need of a broom, brush, dustpan, basket or similar, the simple elegance of these everyday treasures, produced on a small-scale using centuries-old processes, is sure to be a talking point in any home.

WATERHOUSE YOUNG “THE SKIN WIZARDS”

Tucked away in the tranquil heart of London’s medical district, award-winning Waterhouse Young has gained a reputation as one of London’s leading skin clinics. Established in 2012 (so one of the first medical aesthetic clinics), they specialise in bespoke, clinically proven treatments and science-backed skincare to rejuvenate and restore radiance, whilst maintaining your natural beauty.

The clinic is reassuringly professional although you might mistake the peaceful ambiance and subtle décor as being in a high-end spa. What’s more, the welcome from the team instantly puts you at ease and relaxes you from the moment you walk in.

My journey started with a consultation with the lovely Dr YouJin to understand my skin and hopes for treatment. I explained I’d like to refresh my tired, winter-dry and sallow complexion so she created a personalised plan of treatments and skincare to achieve the results I was looking for.

Dr You-Jin recommended I start with a course of the red-carpet favourite, HydraFacial - a non-invasive, skin resurfacing and rejuvenating treatment which combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration and antioxidant protection.

As Rosie worked her magic on me, she explained each process of the HydraFacial and what I could expect to feel, plus the initial results I would instantly see. She also discussed the next steps of my treatment plan and gave me advice for the following days and weeks to optimise the results I’d see. I wasn’t expecting a miracle from the first treatment, but couldn’t have been more wrong: I left the clinic with gorgeous glowing, hydrated skin, noticeably more radiant than when I arrived.

With hundreds of patient reviews and recommendations, the team also feature regularly in the media and I can attest that they are highly skilled and knowledgeable. It’s no mean feat to earn their reputation in a competitive field but their passion and genuine care for you and your skin speaks volumes. I, for one, can’t wait to return.

PINKpower:

EMBRACE YOUR INNER BARBIE GIRL THIS SEASON, SAYS KATIE WRIGHT

How to wear spring’s biggest beauty trend

Pink was popping all over the spring/ summer catwalks, with make-up artists at the big four fashion weeks jumping on the #Barbiecore bandwagon that has swept through the worlds of fashion and beauty.

“With the much-anticipated Barbie film starring Margot Robbie due for release in July and Pantone announcing Viva Magenta as 2023’s Colour of the Year, it’s clear that hot pink is in,” says Grace Vernon, head of global trends and cultural insights at Boots and No7 Beauty Company.

“Look out for the iconic ‘Barbie ponytail’ alongside bright pink eyeshadow, blush and lipstick, and hot pink nails.”

Here’s how to try the rose-tinted trend from lids to lips…

EYES

Fierce fuchsia was the shade of choice at Paul & Joe in London, and Alice + Olivia in New York, where lids were daubed with matte cream shadow, but you don’t have to choose such a bright pink for your peepers.

“For a truly on-trend way to wear pink on the eyes, opt for a bluetoned shade with a subtle satin finish, giving it more of a grown-up look,” says Jasmine de Souza, education manager at 3INA.

“By patting this shade all over the lid with your ring finger, you’ll get a seamless finish without the need for blending.”

CHEEKS

“Blush is already having a moment, with sales of blush palettes at Boots increasing by 113% last year,” says Vernon.

“And with inspiration from TV shows such as Netflix’s Bridgerton, with its highly anticipated third series [hopefully] landing later this year, we predict this trend will be blowing up this

spring.”

At Chet Lo SS23, MAC make-up artist Terry Barber placed acid pink blush high up on the temples in an Eighties homage.

“Use a sheer, buildable product that lets you gradually add intensity, without the fear of over-applying,” de Souza advises. “You can add layers of pink to reach your desired look.”

LIPS

Pink lips on the catwalks ran the gamut, from glossy bubblegum (at Vivienne Westwood) to fuchsia (Paul Costelloe) and matte magenta (Carolina Herrera).

During awards season, actors such as Florence Pugh and Kate Hudson have been opting for softer shades and satin finishes to match their pink ensembles. So, it’s your choice on intensity, just make sure it’s pink.

EFFORTLESS BESPOKE TAILORING TO IMPRESS

Lockdowns and technology have changed the way we work, interact, dress and go about our days. Today we talk how Covid impacted menswear with Tatyana Kozhevnikova, Founder and Creative Director at Artefact London. Artefact London is a boutique bespoke tailoring business in Mayfair. In 2018 Tatyana was recognised by Forbes 30 Under 30 for modernising Savile Row traditions. Are suits in or out? What are some of the trends in menswear?

Is the suit dead post pandemic?

I certainly don’t feel that in my bespoke tailoring business. You see the type of gentlemen that have come to me to get their suits made prior to COVID restrictions are NOT the ones that HAVE to wear a suit, rather the ones that WANT to wear tailoring. It still holds true post lockdowns. Many found new appreciation for being able to dress up and show up in style in the outside world.

Whilst a lot of people are embracing a more relaxed dress code my customers seize an easy opportunity to stand out.

I say this on behalf of many women: us ladies aren’t turned on by comfy sweaters! Ask any woman if she prefers a man wears athleisure or a well fitting casual jacket to the first date? A jacket with correct proportions defines a man’s shoulders and chest like no cardigan or sweater ever will. First impressions matter. Well made tailoring is a short cut to a woman’s heart, elevating an impression & your confidence. Use the shortcut!

What are some of the trends you see in tailoring?

I see and encourage a trend where a classic suit is worn with lightweight knits or a well fitting t-shirt. There is something effortless yet classy about this combination, add dark brown suede shoes to the equation and you are dressed for a day at work that can transition into a date night without the need for a change of clothes. Another request I am getting more of is for work suits to feel & look less office like - more relaxed. My suggestion is making the suits using flannel. When I suggest flannel people often think of a fluffy old fashioned winter cloth. Until I demonstrate the 300gr flannel that gives the suit the perfect drape and can easily be used as separates, dressed up or down. I build capsule wardrobes for my customers using flannel suits (think light

grey, dark navy, sage, oatmeal) that can then be mixed & matched to create timeless casual combinations.

Did your business have to adapt post pandemic?

We expanded the bespoke casual wear to offer field jackets, trousers with an elastic waistband that became a hit for working from home. Yet, it is still a small proportion of the requests. Classic tailoring remains the heart of the business.

Navy wedding suit - how to make it look less office like and more special occasion?

Dark navy suits are a very popular colour choice as they complement virtually every skin tone. Since it is the go to colour for weddings and work alike, it is a good idea to differentiate the wedding look.

The simplest way to make a navy suit look special is by adding a waistcoat to it. Want more panachemake it a double-breasted waistcoat. Want to stand out even more? Add colour to the waistcoat and make it a contrasting one.

And then of course accessories: white pocket square or perhaps play with colour. Add a boutonnière for the festive mood.

Ties: In or out?

A tie is a must for a wedding or a very formal meeting.

When it comes to day to day work - skip it. At the same time, I believe fashion is a cycle. Clothes & accessories go out of fashion to subsequently make a return a few years down the line. Don’t rush to give your ties away to charity. Hide them under bed for 4-5 years, bring them out in 2028.

Do you find yourself wearing suits & jackets all the time?

Personally, I am a big fan of athleisure myself when I take my kids to the park or go to the local pizzeria. For a night out I wear my Artefact blazers with leather leggings and high heels. I do love to dress all out for work. If you see a woman wearing a three piece suit with a contrasting waistcoat in Mayfair - there is a good chance it is me. theartefact.com

FLORIS LONDON THE LILY COLLECTION

Delicately adorned in soft white lace amidst a bloom of Lily of the Valley, the Summer Queen beckons Beltane, the welcoming of the new season and sun kissed days. Dancers weave around ribbon adorned maypoles to celebrate the lengthening of days and to ensure that the season’s bounty will be plentiful.

Floris London returns this summer with a new take on a quintessentially classic floral scent. Lily takes inspiration from the history and rich folklore of Lily of the Valley, cultivated for over 400 years and a symbol of rebirth, purity, love, and happiness.

A balanced floral fragrance, both uplifting and warm, leaving a soft yet lingering trail. Inspired by the lily of the valley flower, the perfumer sought to preserve its natural state. The dewy freshness of the blooms is enhanced with a flourish of Egyptian jasmine and Bulgarian rose. The sparkling white tea notes give a clean effect while the reassuring woody musky dry-down leaves a soft warmth on skin.

Notes From the Perfumer

“Lily embodies the joy and exuberance of this timeless English tradition with its floral note evoking the images of springtime blossom, verdant meadows and the sounds of birds singing in harmony. The scent of Lily is both innocent and alluring with a quality that transports you to a place of pure beauty and simplicity, evoking memories of sunshine, warmth, and the joys of nature. In celebration of our unique heritage, Lily is a modern interpretation of what was traditionally one of Floris’s earliest floral perfumes.” –

Not only is this exuberant fragrance available in an Eau de Toilette, but the scent is also surrounded by a luxurious Bath & Body Collection, to fully immerse oneself in this truly British bloom.

The Lily Collection is available to pre-order online at florislondon.com now and will be available instore and online from Thursday 18th May.

CHAPLINS SPRING TREND REPORT

The spring that has sprung in the home this year is rather different from the blossomy florals and gentle pastels you might expect to see as the seasons start switching. This year, we want our rooms to be filled with wonder, to open doors to the unexpected and to show us a different perspective on that which we thought we knew.

Our living spaces should be statements, elicit quiet ‘wows’ and challenge the predictable. The 2023 palette is still based around the natural, but with a twist – some tones are bolder, brighter and brazen, while some blend into the backdrop like they’ve been there all along. Shapes and patterns experiment with minimalism which is impactful as well as elegantly pared back. Here’s the Chaplins edit of the very best.

VIVID SKIES

From energetic blazes of ochre to flashes of fiery orange and bursts of intense magenta, 2023 hues are a force of nature, looking to the skies for inspiration and coming back with something surprising. A celebration of the colours that dance across the skies on the most bewitching of nights and beguiling

of mornings, these exuberant shades enliven us, exuding energy and oomph.

The perky early morning/eveningis-coming golden tone of B&B Italia’s Metropolitan ME100 armchair by Jeffrey Bernett adds a whimsical, welcoming feel to the seat’s

sculptural shape, a dazzling-yet-mellow flash of vitality which gives the whole room a glow.

Glas Italia’s XX Console Table by Johanna Grawunder is an exploration of light and colour made three dimensional. Harnessing the characteristics of a reflective glass prism, its intense pink and sizzling orange shades capture the hues of the most brilliantly-toned sky. COR’s Drop Pouf by Pauline Deltour joyfully deposits a bold burst of could-be-red-could-beorange into a room, a shade from a sunset in its glorious final throws.

ANGULAR EXPLORATION

Unleash your wild side with the vogue for adventurous angles, courageous corners and liberated lines. A revolt against the rounded forms we’ve been drawn to until recently, these designs are experimental but approachable, their visual sharpness toned down by soft angles, natural materials, neutral shades and an abundance of creativity. It’s expect-theunexpected with these objects, which flip reverse our go-to smooth shapes and care not for what came before.

Its surface decorated with minimalist modern marquetry, Gallotti&Radice’s Zen Desk by Massimo Castagna intersects angular segments of ash and rosewood for a simple yet striking asymmetric arrangement.

Merging the rounded with wide, open angles, Cattelan Italia’s Sautern Wall Mirror by Tosca Design is a geometric droplet, the area between the pointed steel frame and curved glass highlighted with cut-out negative space.

An explosion of criss-crossing shapes, the Big Bang Pendant Light by Enrico Franzolini and Vicente Gracia Jimenez for Foscarini is a jagged exploration of angular slices, shadows and diffused light.

SERENE SCENERY

If you listen carefully, you might hear the entire design world calling out ‘green is the new grey!’. Transformed into a background colour that’s snuck into our lives, the innately calming character of forest-y, fir-tinted, leafy green has wrapped around us with zero fuss and without anyone really noticing. It’s soothing, brings nature inside, goes with every colour in the spectrum, and makes us exhale almost

involuntarily.

Evoking images of sprawling Nordic firs, Muuto’s Cover Dining Chair by Thomas Bentzen feels like it’s just wandered in from the woodland, the timber’s grain remaining delightfully visible under its greenness.

Merging with the natural yet standing out for its industrial material, the green Outdoor Aplomb Pendant Light by Paolo Lucidi & Luca Pevere is crafted from concrete tinted in a soothing sage shade, ready to blend in with al fresco backdrops.

The textured, under-the-radar olive tone of Flexform’s Vulcano Outdoor Sofa by Antonio Citterio gives it an au-natural sense of tactility quietly dedicated to the beauty of nature.

OPEN STRUCTURES

Honour the craft skills that go into product design and embrace open structures, pieces that show off their frames, joints and supports and make them a beautiful part of their aesthetic. Honest, function-fused design is on the rise, pieces which don’t seek to hide their origins but are proud of them and harness them as decorative features. This new minimalism adds nothing which doesn’t need to be there, making the most of the building materials and methods which its construction relies upon.

Its body poised within a frame made up of solid Canaletta

walnut legs, Porada’s Regent Chest of Drawers by Marelli & Molteni hovers separately from its supporting structure, highlighting its elegant construction as well as the piece’s main body.

Turning joints into decorative accents, the Nimbus Mirror by Kroyer Saetter Lassen for Menu suspends its glazing within a ring of brass, while screws act as attractive accent detailing.

A grid-like skeletal structure of horizonal and vertical lines, the Coordinates C4 Ceiling Light by Michael Anastassiades for Flos illuminates and celebrates its simple scaffold-like form.

BATHROOM TILE GUIDE

The last few years have definitely taught us all the importance of making sure our homes are also a sanctuary. Therefore, it is not surprising that bathroom tiles that can help us feel that we have escaped to a spa and provide a feeling of luxury are set to be a sought-after tile choice for 2023. One way of creating this is through the use of Onyx tiles which have become particularly popular for their elegance, calming colour pallets and luxurious feel. This has led Floors of Stone to recently introduce their Caverna Pearl Porcelain tiles which replicate the appearance of real Onyx without being such an expensive option. Our Onyx-Effect tiles still provide a translucent feel with their highly polished surface that reflects the light beautifully.

Statements shapes are another way of creating visual interest across our floors and walls, particularly in bathroom spaces. Floors of Stone have recently introduced their Saluzzo Pink Porcelain which is a hexagon shaped, terrazzo-effect tile, which is the perfect option if you are looking to create a space with a little personality and depth.

THE DETAILS

These are just some of the many creative options when renovation a bathroom space. For further information or advice, you can contact Floors of Stone either by telephone on, 01509 234000, or via email at enquiries@floorsofstone.com.

The luxurious feel that you can create in a bathroom is timeless and one which will never get old. A classical chequerboard marble is always a desired look when customers are searching for the perfect bathroom tile. The Parisian Chequer Marble by Floors of Stone would be the ideal fit as it is created by giving a mix of black and white tumbled Marble tiles to create that timeless chequerboard floor.

SEVENOAKS HOUSE

and encourage quieter moments surrounded by nature.

The bottom floor of the building is a partial basement. To reduce the footprint of the construction and ensure that this new abode doesn’t break the natural shape of the surrounding land, we designed the bottom floor in such a way that it is built into the landscape itself. To add, the roof was also designed to be flat, to ensure that the silhouette of the house is as inoffensive as possible.

Situated in the idyllic and highly desirable town of Sevenoaks, this fivebed replacement dwelling provided our design studio with a unique canvas on which to build.

Our replacement dwelling, designed closely with our client’s needs and preferences in mind, is a continuation of the local country home design philosophy, but with a distinctive, modern approach.

The proposal

The metropolitan greenbelt is a cherished location and a welcome break from the claustrophobia of London’s urban landscape. When designing this house, we wanted the architecture to complement the greenery around it, rather than overpower and dominate the land. Working within the rules and regulations of the greenbelt, we proposed a home that adds value to the local area, whilst affecting the local environment as little as possible.

In our build proposal, the building is described as a ‘contemporary replacement dwelling providing a very high-quality design, suitable for modern living standards as well as capitalizing on the nature of the site.’

To achieve our proposed goals, we first changed the orientation of the home. This change has compounding benefits; not only does this rotation allow the home owners to enjoy the natural beauty of the local woodland, but also the economic and comfort benefits of passive solar heating. Further to this, a sky lounge and external roof terrace was added to the third storey of the construction to enable

A unique character and a perfect stage for unforgettable moments. This latest project from our architectural design studio has been an exercise in reinterpreting traditional architecture and bringing it to the new millennium. The material palette chosen for this project is one made primarily of marble and limestone. These natural materials echo the stately homes dotted nearby in style and longevity.

The building in its entirety is filled with character and provides the perfect backdrop for our client’s day-to-day lives. The openplan layout accompanied by the skybox, infinity pool and frequent placement of windows immerses the building into nature as one continuous, unobtrusive structure, without sacrificing the privacy of its inhabitants. Many of the rooms were tailored with privacy as a focus. The bedrooms, en-suites, cinema and music room allow for total privacy from the outside world if wanted.

Our design studio worked hard to produce an end result that is both versatile and breathtakingly beautiful. This new home is a wonderful addition to Sevenoaks and will accompany the silhouette of this picturesque landscape for many years to come.

SPACE SAVING SOLUTIONS for outdoor living

Cox & Cox offers a wide range of furniture designed to maximise your outside space. By using the space more productively and choosing the right products, no place is too small to become the perfect outdoor oasis.

Bistro and lounge sets are perfectly versatile for myriad uses and offer solutions for every space. You can tuck one of these sets almost anywhere or keep them centre stage on a patio or raised decking. For dining al fresco with friends, a corner set could be the answer for the compact urban garden or small terrace, as they offer an immediate solution to space saving and create a neat area especially for the purpose of entertaining. A hanging chair makes a statement wherever it’s placed but is particularly perfect for making the most of a secluded corner. New this season – the ingenious addition of a clip-on side table allows you to keep a book and a glass of something chilled reassuringly close to hand.

Offering versatility to suit all spaces, an extendable day bed transforms easily from a neat bench seat into a relaxed daybed for more serious lounging as the mood and occasion takes you. Compact outdoor furniture pieces aren’t limited to just small spaces. In larger outdoor areas both bistro and corner sets are also perfect for zoning or creating cosy little nooks for when there’s nothing better than curling up in the shade with a book.

CAYMAN ISLAND VILLA DESIGN CONCEPT BY INTERIOR DESIGN HOUSE, SAINT & NOIRE

Saint and Noire have been appointed to project manage, design, and procure another luxurious villa; working closely and collaboratively with the client to create a minimal and striking family home, for work, leisure, and pure relaxation in an exquisite coastal marina of the Cayman Islands.

Inspired by the Bauhaus* avant-garde of the 20th century modernism, influential - from the iconic Mies Van Der Rohe classic armchairs, low lounge chairs and stripped soft furnishings to contemporary spotlighting, the design concept offers a truly compelling futuristic residential abode.

Industrial textures of wood, steel, metal and marble with clean lines, paintings, sculptures, elevate the muted grey, black, brown, and white accent colour palettewhilst a pop of colourful sheers and chrome trimmings, contrasts elegantly well with geometric shapes and modern aesthetics.

Bespoke elements from an exquisite piano and pool table - which transcends into a dining table and staple furniture from master craft makers Knoll and Minotti, wonderfully reflect the luxury innovative living vision, desired by the client.

Abundant natural light with endless large open windows, floods the open floor space, bringing warmth and clarity. Wooden panels divide the living, dining, and kitchen area with a spacious ebb & flow.

The bedroom designs are the epitome of lightweight comfortluxurious textiles for the throws and pillows and a concealed walk-in wardrobes. The bathroom with its industrial walk-in shower, fitted with sparkly glass doors and surrounded by concrete cast walls - is a modern classic sanctuary.

Saint and Noire - Luxury boutique interior design house based in London & Hertfordshire, founded by Interior Designer Lenka Marsh. Saint & Noire’s clients include luxury residential, commercial and developer projects. Lenka started her design career as a kitchen

designer for the prestigious kitchen design brandher unique designs have adorned the homes of A-List footballers and since she started her company she has gone global - with projects in the Cayman Islands, Lake Como and Monaco, to find out more visit saintandnoire.com. DISCOVER THE 1860 BATH SPA COLLECTION FROM THE BAKED TILE CO

Want to inject some sunshine into the home this summer? Discover the 1860 Bath Spa Collection from The Baked Tile Co.

The 1860 Bath Spa tile collection is steeped in history – with its mosaic-effect surface giving off traditional encaustic vibes. However, this porcelain beauty has been manufactured in the 21st century, so while it might look timeless it is actually perfect for busy, contemporary homes.

So not only does this statement tile – which can be used on both walls and floors – look amazing, it will stand up to anything homeowners can throw at it (well, almost). It’s perfect for fireplaces, wet rooms and can even be used outside thanks to its frostproof, anti-slip finish. It also works with underfloor heating.

What’s more, the collection comes in two finishes – the Mosaic Bud Décor and Spa Leaf Décor – which gives homeowners a

plethora of design options.

Lesley Taylor, Managing Director of The Baked Tile Co, said: “1860 Bath Spa is a stunning collection which is exclusive to The Baked Tile Co. With its bright yellow hues and mosaic finish, it’s a collection that commands attention.

“And because it is available in two different designs – the Leaf and the Bud – it opens up considerable design options giving homeowners a bespoke finish.”

The Baked Tile Co design team also offer a design service for the 1860 Bath Collection. Their experts are on hand to help customers get the most out of their tiles by creating a visual and layout guide for installers.

The 1860 Bath Collection is available now from bakedtiles.co.uk priced at £86.66 per m2.

Bold colour + big pattern = HAPPY DECORS

said:

“If there is one thing you can guarantee about the Great British summer, it’s that sometimes we must make our own sunshine and dopamine décor is the perfect way to do so.

“Dopamine décor is about creating an interior scheme that boosts positive moods and while there are no hard and fast rules, bright colours and big, bold patterns are often associated with it.

“Our homes should be full of positivity and great wallpaper can definitely make that happen.”

Independent wallpaper design house Ohpopsi has the perfect formula for those who want to inject some happiness into the home this summer: dopamine décor.

Like dopamine dressing is to the fashion world, dopamine décor is the art of using strong patterns and bright hues to bring a little joy to interior schemes.

Ohpopsi’s wallpapers are packed with pattern and colour and their designs take inspiration from everywhere, anywhere and everything in between. For stockists: ohpopsi.com
