HORSEPOWER OF A DIFFERENT KIND COMES TO ASCOT

THE DETAILS

The evocative world of classic car collecting is proving to be as popular as ever amongst those with a fascination for cars of yesteryear. Emphatically proving the point is Historics Auctioneers, whose coming sale at Ascot Racecourse on Saturday, 27th May features some 170 hugely varied classics, superbly represented by a wealth of different marques, eras and values.

Speaking in the build-up to the auction, Historics CEO Mark Perkins commented: “More and more people are discovering the joy of classic car ownership. At the root of it is a wonderfully friendly community of like-minded enthusiasts.

He continued: “We are always delighted to see over 1,000 visitors attending our major auctions in the spectacular setting of Ascot Racecourse and the sale on May 27 most certainly won’t disappoint, full to bursting with a huge variety of classics to suit all tastes and pockets.”

Historics’ Ascot offering is most certainly cosmopolitan. On the one hand, there’s a charming and hugely iconic polished aluminium 1961 Airstream Bambi motorhome - on the other, a magnificent bevy of wonderful Italian sports classics from such venerable marques as De Tomaso, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati, spanning four decades from the 70s.

‘Commanding’ is a great way of describing a fabulous 1953 Rolls-Royce Wraith by coachbuilder Hoopers that comes to sale in impeccable

condition after no less than £200,000 lavished on it, whilst some 30 years its junior a 1980 RollsRoyce Silver Shadow is also sure to be the focus for collectors, having travelled just 5,600 miles since new with just one family...that’s an average of just 10 miles per month during its 43-year life. American classics continue to have a strong following across all eras and at Ascot, Historics is bringing to market two cars reflecting 1930s US motoring by way of a 1935 Auburn Phaeton Cabriolet whilst from fellow US maker Nash is an 881 Convertible, believed to be one of just five remaining worldwide. A counterpoint is a spectacular 1964 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible, measuring some 5.7 metres stem to stern. Meanwhile, a wide selection of ever-popular classic British sports cars from the likes of Aston Martin, Austin Healey, Jaguar, MG and Triumph also grace the auction hall and spectacular Ascot Racecourse surroundings, adding flavour to an occasion which is not to be missed.

The auction commences at 9.30 am on Saturday 27th May, preceded by three full viewings days from Wednesday 24th when all entries can be thoroughly inspected at close quarters. Entry is by auction catalogue on the day at £30, admitting two. The catalogue can be purchased in advance via the Historics’ website and at the entrance to the auction at Ascot Racecourse

Westminster Security

Personal security is a tax-deductible expense

employment, there is no necessity for any direct or impending danger. And the expenditure must be in connection with the use or provision of an asset or service which improves personal security.

CEOs, Directors, and other business executives could invest in a wide range of personal security services and assets, such as close protection, security chauffeurs, residential security guards, security doors and windows, and even a secure panic room if required.

Most company owners and directors are unaware that security expenses are tax-deductible for businesses.

While some companies see security as an unnecessary expense, it is essential to protect assets and employees. Investing in security can increase productivity, prevent theft, and protect owners and employees in the event of a robbery or targeted attack. Not only is security a wise investment, but it can also reduce tax liability.

This little-known fact is not widely discussed or published online. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) allows companies to offset their security expenses on services and assets that improve property and personal security against their corporation tax liability. However, some requirements must be met to be eligible for a tax deduction.

The perceived threat and risks must be established from the particular trade or

Similarly, a company could invest in office or retail store security, such as CCTV and alarms, security guards, security shutters, etc. even bodyguards for employees in the event of a special threat. Sole traders or limited company directors working from a home-based office could also invest in tax-deductible services and assets to protect themselves from potential threats.

The interpretation of “special threat” is not necessarily prescriptive and introduces a grey area open to interpretation. Therefore, documenting the reasoning for the allowance is essential in case of a subsequent dispute. Businesses can benefit from increased security, improved morale, retention and reputation, productivity, and profits, whilst saving tax by investing in security.

PRÊT-À-PORTEA RETURNS FOR SPRING / SUMMER 2023

ABOUT THE BERKELEY

Nestled between bustling Knightsbridge and leafy Belgravia, The Berkeley is the essence of contemporary chic and innovative luxury. Stunning rooms and suites are accompanied by Michelin-starred cuisine from Marcus Wareing, a fashion favourite afternoon tea at Prêt-àPortea and Cedric Grolet at The Berkeley, courtesy of one of the world’s most famous pastry chefs. Complete with the Blue Bar and The Berkeley Bar & Terrace for drinks, the Bamford Wellness Spa and a rooftop pool with jaw dropping Hyde Park views, The Berkeley continues to surprise and enchant.

The Berkeley has unveiled its Spring/ Summer 2023 Prêt-à-Portea collection – a playful and stylish selection of couture cakes inspired by designers from Kenzo to Moschino. A firm favourite with fashionistas with a sweet tooth, Prêt-à-Portea gives a contemporary twist to afternoon tea with a collection of bold catwalk-inspired creations.

This season’s collection opens with Loewe’s viral Anthurium dress, reimagined with Sacher sponge, espresso caramel and Valrhona 70% chocolate mousse, set on a croustillant base and topped with a chocolate flower. The Berkeley pastry team pays a heartfelt homage to the late and great Vivienne Westwood with a Madagascar vanilla biscuit portrait intricately iced, complete with iconic red hair.

Hermès’ tasselled bucket bag is crafted out of Victoria sponge sandwiched with apricot jam, wrapped in chocolate and finished with a chocolate feather plume. Moschino’s vibrant ensemble is made with tropical mousse with a banana and passion fruit centre, set on Sablé Breton biscuit and finished with a meringue flamingo.

Two designers appear in Prêt-à-Portea this

season for the very first time: Zimmermann’s playful striped co-ord is a cylinder of joconde sponge, filled with blueberry bavarois. This is topped with a chocolate skirt and wafer thin biscuit legs, akimbo. US label Thom Browne’s avant-garde look is a fraise des bois tart with strawberry crémeux, topped with a lime and mint truffle and red chocolate hat.

Finally, the season’s showstopper takes inspiration from Kenzo with a cake designed to share – a velvety citrus cream with lemon confit and coconut gel, set on a Sablé biscuit base and topped with sugar flowers.

The Spring/Summer season of Prêt-à-Portea is served from 1pm - 5.30pm every day, priced from £80 per person.

ARAMONO: The Beauty of Everyday Life

Although you might ordinarily head to Kensington to see world-renowned treasures at one of its many cultural venues, at Japan House London, until 30 June 2023, you can also delight in the beauty and ingenuity of the everyday.

Guests can get a glimpse into daily life in Japan over the last few hundred years through a display of aramono, a term which refers to household goods such as brooms, brushes, dustpans and baskets which are functional, ordinary and wellloved. This free display shows these objects piled high on a full-scale cart as they would have been in the 19th century by a trader selling his wares on the cart, he pulled along himself.

The display also invites guests to learn about the history of aramano. In Japan’s Muromachi period (1336-1573 CE), larger, cheaper daily commodities

The tasting menu at 1890 by Gordon Ramsay at THE SAVOY

I’m sat on a stool at the American Bar in The Savoy Hotel, in awe of their head bartender, Chelsie Bailey. Rewriting the stereotype for who you might imagine has the most famous bar job in the world, Chelsie brings a fresh explosion of youth and coolness to the delectable drinking space.

Imparting a plethora of cocktail tips (drink a non-alcoholic beer on the side of your cocktails if you want to reduce your alcohol intake; never buy sugar syrup – it’s so easy to make, with a 1:1 ratio of sugar and boiling water, and stir) her enthusiasm is infectious. After discussing my favourite flavour profiles, she serves me an Old Cuban and I have to say, it’s the most delicious cocktail I’ve ever tasted.

Chelsie continues the history making at The Savoy, only the second female to hold the iconic role here since Ada ‘Coley’ Coleman in the early1900s, her knowledge fizzing about women in the industry.

The Savoy, of course, is renowned the world over. Its 267 rooms and suites offer up elegant Edwardian or art deco style, as well as a bed for the night.

The tasting menu at 1890 by Gordon Ramsay is up there with some of the best. Open only for dinner, t’s the tiniest restaurant I’ve ever eaten in, seating just 26 guests, and overlooks the glorious art deco entrance – ask for the table by the window and you can while away the evening people watching and spotting fancy cars.

Everything about the experience feels special, from my handbag being given its very own stool, to the first taste of Libertine – an English sparkling rosè that is only available to Gordon Ramsay, and the way you’re told what you’re eating

as they bring it to the table – there are no menus to peruse and ruin the surprise.

Geometric designs stand out on lit up wall tiles and the copper ceiling is mesmerising, as spirographic patterns twist and turn in the dark, atmospheric lighting.

Named 1890 – the year the legendary French chef Georges Auguste Escoffier joined The Savoy and began creating his culinary legacy, the nine courses delight the senses in every way.

As we tuck into a smoked Cheddar gougère, which disappears the second it enters my mouth, the following contemporary fine dining courses do not disappoint. The Jerusalem artichoke royale with crisp artichoke skin and black truffle arrives in the most beautiful golden egg, and the winter flavours in the bean cassoulet consommé are to die for.

The Royal Windsor Park fallow deer is perfectly pink and paired divinely with a Torres Mas Plana Penedes juicy red wine, from Spain. The elevation of every dish is exquisite, and by the time the pre-dessert and dessert are gobbled up, you might just forget everything you’ve eaten before. The titles of Yorkshire rhubarb melba and hazelnut soufflè don’t come close to describing the heavenly flavours that make silence fall to our table, as we spoon up every last scraping.

NATIONAL TRUST GEMS

Oakhurst Cottage and The Homewood two unique gems of the National Trust open to the public.

Two unique houses in Surrey, Oakhurst Cottage, and The Homewood, will be opening their doors to visitors this spring. Only open from April – October for guided tours, this is a rare opportunity to see examples of 18th century rustic charm and 20th century modern design which are cared for by the National Trust.

Nestled in the village of Hambledon near Godalming, Oakhurst cottage has remained practically unchanged for over 100 years and provides a glimpse into a rural way of life that you might only read about in books or see in paintings. As you walk through the doors to the front living room with its large fireplace, visitors can get a sense of a bygone era with the hearth being the centre of cottage homelife. Humble furnishings and homewares, further reflect what life was like for inhabitants of the time. Outside, the garden has been planted with vegetables which would provide food for the kitchen table with floral borders.

Due to the fragile condition of the cottage, it is open for guided tours only on Thursday and Saturday from 13 April to 28 October.

By contrast, The Homewood, offers visitors a chance to witness an extraordinary early 20th

century country villa which is a masterpiece of modernist design and icon of contemporary architecture. Built in 1938 by architect, Patrick Gwynne, as his family home, the house is elevated on stilts with white walls and expansive glazing. The exceptional living spaces remain unchanged from Gwynne’s original design and includes his furniture collection which again comprises unique design classics. Visitors can also explore the 6-acre garden designed by Gwynne which includes a number of special gardens within the main structure each with their own unique colour and seasonal interest.

Under the terms of its bequest to the National Trust, the Homewood remains a private home. However, it is open to visitors for guided tours from 1 April to 29 October on the first Saturday of each month and subsequent Fridays.

ITALIAN CITY BREAK: GENOA

Often overshadowed by more scenic Italian cities, Liguria’s capital is an under-the-radar delight, says Sarah Marshall

WHERE TO DRINK

Les Rouges, 1st floor of the Piazza Campetto

Staring up at faded frescoes and the chipped busts of classical philosophers, it’s hard not to feel inspired by the surroundings of this sultry, intimate salon - and that’s even before the cocktails have kicked in. Part of Palazzo Imperiale, one of Genoa’s magnificent Rolli palaces which were built in the 16th century and now have Unesco status, the bar honours its past with a signature drink inspired by the city. The Spritz Genovese (€7/£6) features locally-produced vermouth Asinello Corochinato, topped up with basil soda. Visit lesrouges.it

WHERE TO EAT

Il Marin Restaurant, Millo Building Ancient

Port Calata Cattaneo

Despite Genoa’s proximity to the water, when it comes to local delicacies, seafood dishes are overshadowed by sturdier carbs like focaccia. But this sleek, dashingly modern restaurant, which overlooks the Porto Antico, serves a great selection of local catch. Crossing through the Eataly food emporium to get here, you’ll need to bypass deliciously-dressed products flirting for attention. But abstinence is definitely worth it. Sitting at long

wooden tables encourages diners to share dishes, which include scallops served with turnip greens, rhubarb and hemp seeds (€19/£16), and lobster prepared with grapes and porcini mushrooms (€26/£22). A set lunch menu costs from E34 (£29). Visit genova.eataly.it.

WHERE TO SAMPLE LOCAL FOODS

Mercato Orientale

A rainbow of delicate amber courgette flowers, crisp ruby-red radicchio and bushy forest-green cavolo nero leaves, the vegetables on display at this market are pert and fresh, indicating it’s probably only been a few hours since they were plucked from the ground. Other delights include homemade pesto sauces, best served with thick spirals of pasta known as trofie, and a walnut sauce designed specifically for panzotti, filled parcels similar to ravioli. Operating in former church cloisters since the 19th century, the cherished market is soon to get a revamp, with a new street food wing due to open in May. Ivano Ricchebono, the chef at Genoa’s only Michelinstarred restaurant The Cook, plans to have a stall selling gourmet panini, and there will also be an area upstairs for cooking lessons and workshops, bookable by the public.

WHERE TO STAY Hotel De Ville, Via Di Sottoripa

Most of Genoa’s key modern attractions are in the harbour, so this hotel’s location, set slightly back from the waterfront, is ideally suited for those eager to be in the throng of the action. Occupying several floors of a grand palace which once sheltered noble families, the hotel should be steeped in grandeur. But a minimal, simple design makes it far more understated than you might expect, and only the marble staircase hints at an opulent past. Rooms from E143 (£123) per night (two sharing), including breakfast and city tax. Visit hoteldeville.it/en. visitgenoa.it.

The Case for GOLD COINS

Gold has been a valuable commodity for thousands of years. For Rosland customers, there are many reasons why they continue to put their trust in gold. One of the best ways to build a gold collection is by purchasing gold coins, which offer a range of advantages over other forms of portfolio diversification.

COINS V’S BARS

Coins offer some distinct advantages over bars. They are typically easier to sell due to their smaller size and standardised denominations. They also come with an added level of security, as each coin is individually minted and marked with its denomination and year of issue.

VAT & CGT FREE

Gold coins of a certain purity have the unique advantage of being VAT free. Additionally, British legal tender coins are exempt from Capital Gains Tax, meaning you can sell them or pass them on safe in the knowledge that you won’t have to pay a single penny in tax.

TIPS FOR BUYING COINS

If you’re interested in purchasing gold coins, here are Rosland’s top tips to help you make an informed decision...

1. Research, Research, Research

Before making any purchase, it’s important to

research the types of coins you are interested in buying. Consider the historical significance, the rarity, the minting year, and the condition of the coins. This will give you a better understanding of the potential value of the coins over time.

2. Buy from a Reputable Dealer

One of the most important things to keep in mind when purchasing gold coins is to buy from a reputable dealer. This ensures that you are getting authentic gold coins that are not counterfeit. Look for a dealer who is well-established and has a good reputation.

3. Buy Graded

When buying gold coins, it is important to consider buying graded coins. These coins are evaluated, authenticated, and graded by independent thirdparty grading services – at Rosland they use PCGS and NGC to grade all their coins.

4. Consider the Rarity

The rarity of the coins can have a significant impact on their value. The rarity of a coin can be determined by factors such as its mintage, its condition, and its historical significance.

5. Store Your Coins Securely

Finally, it is important to store your coins securely to protect your collection. Rosland offer all their clients the option of a storage solution – fully secure and insured all year round.

What are combination treatments

Most facial aesthetic treatments are extremely effective when performed alone, to a degree.

But, Founder and Medical Director and Co-founder and Pharmacist, Dr Sina Salimi and Parisa Bahramian of estetica clinics for Surrey and Berkshire, whilst being fully aware of the amazing beneficial results of stand-alone treatments, hugely advocate the combination of treatments in order to really amp up the results, and their bespoke packages at estetica are swiftly gaining traction.

Combination treatments are essentially combined products and procedures that fully compliment each other whilst working towards the same goal, but better than that they are always bespoke and personalised. The approach, as well as exploring a patient’s long term goal, can help create a realistic outcome whilst educating them on the required steps and treatments necessary for their anticipated results and also inform them individually of any unrealistic desires they might have.

Dr Salimi states “There is by no means a “one size fits all” to aesthetics. Everyone is different, with different desired outcomes, different issues, different facial contours and constructs, and not

forgetting their differing budgets and so their approach, and ours, should be too.

Personalised treatment plans help us, as practitioners, to evaluate each individual’s face, focussing on specifics and uniqueness and the preservation of their facial characteristics whilstadvising on options available for rejuvenation, corrections and tweaks, and also the variables.” The beauty of aesthetics is the adaptability of the treatments available when working in conjunction with others and also their ability to maximise results when combined. There is no single treatment that can tackle every issue all at once and a unilateral approach simply isn’tenough when treating differing conditions or putting the breaks on the ageing process Different conditions affect numerous dermal layers and thus, assorted non-invasive and minimally invasive treatment modalities offer maximum benefits and allow for elevated results - and estetica has certainly seen a definite increase in combination treatments.

Anti-wrinkle injections have always been, and will always be, one of the most popular aesthetic treatments, but now patients are looking to combine these with products such as Profhilo (a revolutionary ‘beneath the skin’ hyaluronic acid, moisturising treatment’ helping skin texture and boosting collagen and hydration from deeper below the surface in order to really elevate the outcome), Fillers (to replenish volume loss and

and why do they work better?

boost the more youthful look), or Sculptra (a Poly-L-Lactic Acid facial injection to help stimulate collagen) - to name but a few. These treatments highly compliment each other and help achieve lasting improvements with little or no down-time. Contrary to belief, wrinkles aren’t the only signs of ageing. With age we also lose volume, elasticity and bone density, and with this little gem of knowledge, we can then understand that the neuromodulators loved by many are not solely sufficient in the long game of staving off ageing. Sure they can address wrinkles and stop future lines from forming but this is just a superficial halt, over time, deeper layers need to be addressed by different approaches.

Endolift is another procedure fast gaining recognition and popularity and still remains at the forefront as one of the best treatments available in the industry. It is a ground-breaking , non-surgical, laser treatment which addresses jowls, contours the jawline, restores skin elasticity and boosts collagen all whilst dissolving unwanted facial fat. Its results are immediate, long term and continue to get better over the next few months, and although this is the best treatment yet, even this benefits from a combination treatment of Profhilo, anti wrinkle injections and/or finely tuned fillers. The multiple needs of your skin demands multiple treatments and what better way than to combine them.

Another great addition to a treatment plan is the incorporation of cosmeceuticals. These are

topical preparations often considered cosmetic but with the performance characteristics of a pharmaceutical action - many, such as tretinoin, need to be prescribed and only by a qualified practitioner. They contain active ingredients that have a beneficial and therapeutic effect on skin cell function and have the ability to give the skin an enormous overhaul when used correctly. Examples of Cosmeceutical products include Anti-Ageing creams and Serums, Skin Tightening Lotions, Advanced Skin Cleansers, Moisturisers and Skin Whiteners and Peptides.

The aforementioned treatments are just a few of the many that Dr Salimi and Parisa carry out at their estetica clinics by way of combination treatments. In order to explore your very own personal combination options, scan the QR code to book a consultation at estetica

Dermal Fillers: Friend or Foe?

Cosmetic medicine specialist, Dr Peter Forrester answers some questions and clears up some misunderstandings about dermal fillers.

Are dermal fillers safe?

Restylane was the first HA filler and has been in use for over 20 years. Since introduction HA filers have been used tens of millions of times. Hence, we now know a great deal about both their benefits and safety. Because the HA in fillers is very similar to the HA that exits naturally.

How long do HA fillers last?

Dr. Peter Forrester and Ms. Helen McEvoy offer:

• Wrinkle reducing and skin smoothing injections: A highly effective way to reduce forehead lines, frown lines and crow’s feet.

• HA Dermal Fillers: smooth deeper lines and furrows as well as returning lost volume to the face.

What are dermal fillers?

The term Dermal Filler refers to a group of injectable clear gels designed to lift and plump skin. They are commonly based on hyaluronic acid (HA). Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in many body tissues including the skin where it has important functions maintaining structure and hydration. HA binds to water in the skin, locking in moisture. As we get older the amount of hyaluronic acid in skin gradually diminishes which in part is responsible for many of the appearances of skin ageing.

Will it be obvious that I have had a filler treatment or will I look pumped up?

Images in the media of hugely plumped lips and cheeks and the so-called trout-pout have given HA dermal fillers an undeservedly bad reputation. Correctly used they will result in a natural and rejuvenating appearance with no risk of an overtreated look. The paradox of filler treatments is this, when they are obviously over-done everybody notices but when properly used the results are subtle. People see the ‘bad’ ones but don’t notice the ‘good’ ones – this leads to a belief that all filler treatments will produce a bad result.

What areas can be treated with fillers?

Fillers can be used to:

• replace lost volume in cheeks and lips

• reduce deep and fine surface lines including smokers lines around the mouth

• lift the jowls

• stimulate and hydrate the skin

Injected hyaluronic acid is slowly broken down in the body. The beneficial effects of a treatment can be expected to last for up to 12 months. However, this will depend on a number of factors including patient age, area treated, quantity of filler injected, skin quality, general health and lifestyle including smoking. It was once believed that once all the hyaluronic acid had been broken down it would have no further benefit. However scientific studies have shown that HA fillers can stimulate the formation of heathy skin tissue and new collagen. This boost to the body’s own collagen may help to explain why smaller volumes of filler are often required during top up treatments and why some people seem to derive significant benefit for 18 months or longer.

Many people take extreme pleasure from gardening. Pottering around the garden, making it look beautiful so that you can enjoy the fruits of your labour and relax surrounded by nature may be one of your favourite pastimes.

But regular weeding, digging, planting, hedge trimming and mowing can cause lower back pain. This pain can become so severe that it prevents you from getting out into the garden and doing what you love.

In this article, King Edward VII Hospital physiotherapists give their top tips for reducing the risk of back pain associated with gardening. They also discuss how to manage back pain that may have been caused by working in the garden.

Top tips for preventing, reducing and managing back pain

1. Warm up thoroughly before beginning work on your garden. You might think that because gardening isn’t a sport, you don’t need to warm up. But bending, digging, pulling and lifting all require the muscles to be in full working order. The warmer the muscles, the less likely they’ll be to suffer injury. Try doing some gentle stretches just before you start gardening, and every hour or so whilst gardening if you can. They’ll also help

to ease any lower back pain you may have after gardening (see your doctor before exercising if your back pain is severe).

2. Have a plan that spreads the harder jobs out over time. Don’t aim to get all of the harder jobs such as digging and pruning the tops of bushes and trees all in one day. Mixing up the jobs

also will put less strain on one particular area of the back. You could try 20 minutes of kneeling down to weed followed by 20 minutes of cutting the grass and then 20 minutes of hedge trimming. Use a timer to make sure you don’t go over.

3. Learn to lift properly. Proper lifting is essential for protecting the back in any environment. Gardening often involves lifting heavy pots or bags of soil or sand, or machinery from the shed or up a ladder. Safe lifting involves careful planning, not rushing, keeping the feet stable and crucially, bending from the knees rather than the back.

4. Always push your lawnmower properly. Push forwards in a straight line with your arms extended, and refrain from looking over to your side. Always keep the lead of an electric mower behind you. Putting it over one shoulder can help. If possible, upgrade to a lighter weight electric lawnmower rather than a heavier petrol mower or a difficult to push non-motorised one.

5. Match your tools to your job. If you’re kneeling down to do some weeding, use short handled, lightweight tools and keep them all close by so that you don’t have to overstretch to reach them. Long handled tools are ideal for reaching

higher up branches without using a ladder but take care not to lose your balance when looking upwards. Keep your tools sharp and free from rust too, as this will make each job much easier and less time consuming.

6. Use a knee pad. A knee pad will make weeding and digging with a small trowel easier on your knees. This in turn will make you more comfortable all over, putting less pressure on your back. A knee pad with a frame around it will assist you in getting up and down which will help your back, too.

8. Aim for raised planters. This is a long term solution, but having raised planters and beds for both plants and vegetables means less bending over to tend to them in the long run.

9. Take rest breaks. Taking regular breaks will give your spine a chance to stretch back the other way after being bent over. This will help to reduce the compression experienced by the spine when bending and lifting and can mean that you have less chance of experiencing a back injury.

Always stop gardening immediately if your lower back pain, or any other pain, becomes severe. You could put yourself at risk of further damage if you continue.

When to see a doctor for help

These tips will help you to enjoy gardening free from pain. If you do experience back pain, rest, hot or cold compresses and pain killers can help, although if persistent lower back pain can require further treatment, physiotherapy or even surgery.

PINK POWER: How to wear spring’s biggest beauty trend

bright pink for your peepers.

“For a truly on-trend way to wear pink on the eyes, opt for a blue-toned shade with a subtle satin finish, giving it more of a grown-up look,” says Jasmine de Souza, education manager at 3INA.

“By patting this shade all over the lid with your ring finger, you’ll get a seamless finish without the need for blending.”

CHEEKS

“Blush is already having a moment, with sales of blush palettes at Boots increasing by 113% last year,” says Vernon.

“And with inspiration from TV shows such as Netflix’s Bridgerton, with its highly anticipated third series [hopefully] landing later this year, we predict this trend will be blowing up this spring.”

At Chet Lo SS23, MAC make-up artist Terry Barber placed acid pink blush high up on the temples in an Eighties homage.

“Use a sheer, buildable product that lets you gradually add intensity, without the fear of over-

applying,” de Souza advises. “You can add layers of pink to reach your desired look.”

LIPS

Pink lips on the catwalks ran the gamut, from glossy bubblegum (at Vivienne Westwood) to fuchsia (Paul Costelloe) and matte magenta (Carolina Herrera).

During awards season, actors such as Florence Pugh and Kate Hudson have been opting for softer shades and satin finishes to match their pink ensembles. So, it’s your choice on intensity, just make sure it’s pink.

NAILS

When it comes to selecting your spring nail polish, pale pinks are off the table.

Think bubblegum, raspberry, neon or shocking pink – the brighter the better for an on-trend mani.

ORGANIC PATHS

Elegant pathways and patios are an easy way to add interest to your space. Make sure to avoid straight lines by designing winding paths that create an interesting journey through your space. Combine ethically sourced brick, sandstone and granite with the rustic textures of gravel, wood chips and stepping stones to keep things light and natural. Match these organic shapes and materials to your dining and lounging furniture to truly transform your outdoors…

SECLUDED SEATING

Immerse in your beautiful cottage garden with a secluded space that’s entirely your own. Create a secret seating spot by placing a cosy garden sofa or bistro set beneath a tree or underneath a floral archway. Use timeless rattan furniture to complement your garden’s natural beauty, placing it in a space that offers shade from the hot sun while providing a wonderful view of your stunning garden. If a sudden downpour does seek to ruin your relaxation, Bridgman’s exclusive 100% Waterproof Cushions come as standard across their All Seasons Collections, so all that’s left for you to do is sit back and relax with a good book and lovely cup of tea.

NATURAL CHARM

When planning your cottage garden, don’t be afraid to leave formality behind. Part of the charm of this style of garden is its more rustic and natural design. Instead of planning out every single detail, keep in mind that there is no one ‘perfect formula’ for creating a cottage garden. Give every aspect of your space wild and whimsical touches, like placing hanging lanterns in your trees for a rustic ambience.

120 TH YEAR OF THE CLAYGATE FLOWER & VILLAGE SHOW

As bleak, winter days on the Claygate Recreation Ground transform into brighter, warmer days, The organisers are all very excited about the Claygate Flower & Village Show this year. Not only is it the 120th year of the show but they are also celebrating the Coronation. There will be plenty of things around the grounds to reflect this including items within their Grand Exhibition Marquee.

The draw of this Claygate event is huge, not only for the Claygate community but for neighbouring villages and beyond. But, not surprisingly, to fully participate it calls for some forward planning.

It’s pondering, then designing and creating something you can exhibit on the Saturday in the Grand Exhibition Marquee.

There are hundreds of classes to choose from for both adults and children. There will be something that appeals to all. Cakes, sausages rolls and quiches can be baked the night before but a collage, a painting, an item of pottery or crochet can take you a bit longer. If you’ve sown some seeds, nurturing these until they are vegetables or

flowers will keep you busy right up to show day. So put the dates in your diary and start planning now.

Al fresco luxury with KÖNIGOUTDOOR

With regards to appliances, the homeowners knew what they wanted and didn’t want to overcomplicate the area – a Kamado grill, pizza oven, sink/tap and drinks fridge worked for them.

KönigOutdoor is a specialist in highend, quality designs for outdoor living and has created many stunning outdoor kitchens for homeowners all over the UK.

A recent example is this beautiful outdoor kitchen in Berkshire designed by Stevens Design Refurbishment and Build. The clients wanted to transform their outdoor space into an “entertaining haven” as they love to cook and spend time with friends and family – outside!

Initially, the Stevens Design team could not find a supplier that matched the homeowners’ brief – a stone fronted, handleless kitchen with the quality and look of an indoor kitchen but built to withstand the outdoor elements – until they found KönigOutdoor. The KönigOutdoor team brought the concept and design to life and, most importantly, met the homeowner’s requirements.

Kevin Stevens from Stevens Design comments, “After working with the family four years ago on their indoor kitchen, I was brought in as a design consultant for this outdoor project. KönigOutdoor ticked all the boxes of what the family were after and the team really worked well with me in creating a bespoke kitchen that didn’t exist before!”

The stone door and drawer fronts are Iron Corten by Neolith and the work surfaces are Absolute Black Granite. The granite is leathered to create an “ageing” theme; which can also be seen in the surrounding oak and floor tiles which are a light grey with rust/orange flecks.

CHELSEA IN BLOOM RETURNS FOR 2023

London’s largest free flower festival blooms for 2023 with the theme ‘Flowers on Film’ 22nd – 28th May 2023

Chelsea in Bloom, the world-class floral art show and London’s largest and most prestigious free flower festival is returning this spring with the theme ‘Flowers on Film’. The streets of Chelsea will be transformed with floral creations adorning the frontages of more businesses, shops and restaurants than ever before, taking inspiration from characters and storylines that have graced the big screen, famed cinematic awards and the neighbourhood’s silver screen heritage.

Chelsea in Bloom is produced by Cadogan, in association with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), extending the Chelsea Flower Show out into the local area. Large-scale central installations will spring up around the neighbourhood, nodding to this year’s theme, Flowers on Film, including a life-sized Oscar’s statue and interactive red carpet on Pavilion Road and a cinematic celebration on Sloane Square (alongside the Information Point, where the previously sell-out complimentary rickshaw rides and walking tours can be booked), both by designers All for Love London. Further installations will be found along the King’s Road, on Dovehouse Green and at Royal Avenue, as well as a number at Duke of York Square and along Sloane Street.

In 2022, nearly 100 shops, hotels and restaurants competed for the covered awards with floral masterpieces. Gold, Silver, Bronze and Merit Awards will be awarded to participants by RHS judges alongside a celebrating lifestyle judge, in addition to the top awards for ‘Best Floral Display’, ‘Highly Commended’ and ‘Innovation Award’, with winners announced on Tuesday, 23rd May 2023.

Voting for ‘People’s Champion’ is decided by the public and online voting will open on Monday 22nd and close at midnight on Thursday 26th –please vote for your favourite!

Further information on displays and details on the event will be available closer to the time, via chelseainbloom.co.uk

Spring trend report

The spring that has sprung in the home this year is rather different from the blossomy florals and gentle pastels you might expect to see as the seasons start switching. This year, we want our rooms to be filled with wonder, to open doors to the unexpected and to show us a different perspective on that which we thought we knew.

Our living spaces should be statements, elicit quiet ‘wows’ and challenge the predictable. The 2023 palette is still based around the natural, but with a twist – some tones are bolder, brighter and brazen, while some blend into the backdrop like they’ve been there all along. Shapes and patterns experiment with minimalism which is impactful as well as elegantly pared back. Here’s the Chaplins edit of the very best.

VIVID SKIES

From energetic blazes of ochre to flashes of fiery orange and bursts of intense magenta, 2023 hues are a force of nature, looking to the skies for inspiration and coming back with something surprising. A celebration of the colours that dance across the skies on the most bewitching of nights and beguiling of mornings, these exuberant shades

enliven us, exuding energy and oomph.

The perky early morning/evening-is-coming golden tone of B&B Italia’s Metropolitan ME100 armchair by Jeffrey Bernett adds a whimsical, welcoming feel to the seat’s sculptural shape, a dazzling-yet-mellow flash of vitality which gives the whole room a glow.

Glas Italia’s XX Console Table by Johanna Grawunder is an exploration of light and colour made three dimensional. Harnessing the characteristics of a reflective glass prism, its intense pink and sizzling orange shades capture the hues of the most brilliantly-toned sky. COR’s Drop Pouf by Pauline Deltour joyfully deposits a bold burst of could-be-redcould-be-orange into a room, a shade from a sunset in its glorious final throws.

ANGULAR EXPLORATION

Unleash your wild side with the vogue for adventurous angles, courageous corners and liberated lines. A revolt against the rounded forms we’ve been drawn to until recently, these designs are experimental but approachable, their visual sharpness toned down by soft angles, natural materials, neutral shades and an abundance of creativity. It’s expect-the-unexpected with these objects, which flip reverse our go-to smooth shapes and care not for what came before.

Its surface decorated with minimalist modern marquetry, Gallotti&Radice’s Zen Desk by Massimo Castagna intersects angular segments of ash and rosewood for a simple yet striking asymmetric arrangement.

Merging the rounded with wide, open angles, Cattelan Italia’s Sautern Wall Mirror by Tosca Design is a geometric droplet, the area between the pointed steel frame and curved glass highlighted with cut-out negative space.

An explosion of criss-crossing shapes, the Big Bang Pendant Light by Enrico Franzolini and Vicente Gracia Jimenez for Foscarini is a jagged exploration of angular slices, shadows and diffused light.

SERENE SCENERY

If you listen carefully, you might hear the entire design world calling out ‘green is the new grey!’. Transformed into a background colour that’s snuck into our lives, the innately calming character of forest-y, fir-tinted, leafy green has wrapped around us with zero fuss and without anyone really noticing. It’s soothing, brings nature inside, goes with every colour in the spectrum, and makes us

exhale almost involuntarily.

Evoking images of sprawling Nordic firs, Muuto’s Cover Dining Chair by Thomas Bentzen feels like it’s just wandered in from the woodland, the timber’s grain remaining delightfully visible under its greenness.

Merging with the natural yet standing out for its industrial material, the green Outdoor Aplomb Pendant Light by Paolo Lucidi & Luca Pevere is crafted from concrete tinted in a soothing sage shade, ready to blend in with al fresco backdrops.

The textured, under-the-radar olive tone of Flexform’s Vulcano Outdoor Sofa by Antonio Citterio gives it an au-natural sense of tactility quietly dedicated to the beauty of nature.

OPEN STRUCTURES

Honour the craft skills that go into product design and embrace open structures, pieces that show off their frames, joints and supports and make them a beautiful part of their aesthetic. Honest, functionfused design is on the rise, pieces which don’t seek to hide their origins but are proud of them and harness them as decorative features. This new minimalism adds nothing which doesn’t need to be there, making the most of the building materials and methods which its construction relies upon. Its body poised within a frame made up of solid Canaletta walnut legs, Porada’s Regent Chest of Drawers by Marelli & Molteni hovers separately from its supporting structure, highlighting its elegant construction as well as the piece’s main body.

Turning joints into decorative accents, the Nimbus Mirror by Kroyer Saetter Lassen for Menu suspends its glazing within a ring of brass, while screws act as attractive accent detailing.

A grid-like skeletal structure of horizonal and vertical lines, the Coordinates C4 Ceiling Light by Michael Anastassiades for Flos illuminates and celebrates its simple scaffold-like form.

Brand new wallpaper and interiors collection launched by The Smith Interior

Tattooist turned interior designer Nicola Smith launches her first ever exclusive collection featuring wallpaper, fabric, cushions and lampshades.

Taking maximalist animal print decor to the next level, Nicola Smith of The Smith Interior announces her first, exclusive interior design range, the ‘Roar’ collection.

March 2023: Nicola Smith launches her beautiful first collection featuring wallpapers, fabrics, cushions and lampshades through her interiors brand, The Smith Interior.

Having worked as an accomplished tattooist for over twelve years, during 2021 when lockdowns prevented her from working in the tattoo studio, Nicola successfully completed a diploma in Interior Design. This inspired the renovation of her recently bought home and also launched her into the interiors realm on Instagram (@thesmithinterior) where she has an account that focuses on maximalism. Nicola and her home will also be appearing soon on the upcoming brand new Channel 4 programme, Outrageous Homes, hosted by Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.

Smith said: “I’ve spent many years drawing for my work as a tattooist, and even longer enjoying putting together room schemes in my own home. When I had the time during lockdown to complete my interiors diploma I saw another pathway open up and am enjoying exploring that as a new beginning”.

Based in Hampshire, the unique designs are hand drawn and designed. Featuring four gorgeous prints each in four coordinating colourways, the new Roar collection is available on velvet fabric sold by the meter, luxury wallpaper, sumptuous cushions and fabulously fringed lampshades.

Inspired by her love of bright colours and drawing on her many years working as a tattooist, Nicola brings her unique illustrative art to the interiors world.

SEVENOAKS HOUSE

comfort benefits of passive solar heating. Further to this, a sky lounge and external roof terrace was added to the third storey of the construction to enable and encourage quieter moments surrounded by nature.

Situated in the idyllic and highly desirable town of Sevenoaks, this five-bed replacement dwelling provided our design studio with a unique canvas on which to build.

Our replacement dwelling, designed closely with our client’s needs and preferences in mind, is a continuation of the local country home design philosophy, but with a distinctive, modern approach.

THE PROPOSAL

The metropolitan greenbelt is a cherished location and a welcome break from the claustrophobia of London’s urban landscape. When designing this house, we wanted the architecture to complement the greenery around it, rather than overpower and dominate the land. Working within the rules and regulations of the greenbelt, we proposed a home that adds value to the local area, whilst affecting the local environment as little as possible.

In our build proposal, the building is described as a ‘contemporary replacement dwelling providing a very high-quality design, suitable for modern living standards as well as capitalizing on the nature of the site.’

To achieve our proposed goals, we first changed the orientation of the home. This change has compounding benefits; not only does this rotation allow the home owners to enjoy the natural beauty of the local woodland, but also the economic and

The bottom floor of the building is a partial basement. To reduce the footprint of the construction and ensure that this new abode doesn’t break the natural shape of the surrounding land, we designed the bottom floor in such a way that it is built into the landscape itself. To add, the roof was also designed to be flat, to ensure that the silhouette of the house is as inoffensive as possible.

A UNIQUE CHARACTER AND A PERFECT STAGE FOR UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS.

This latest project from our architectural design studio has been an exercise in reinterpreting traditional architecture and bringing it to the new millennium. The material palette chosen for this project is one made primarily of marble and limestone. These natural materials echo the stately homes dotted nearby in style and longevity.

The building in its entirety is filled with character and provides the perfect backdrop for our client’s day-to-day lives. The open-plan layout accompanied by the skybox, infinity pool and frequent placement of windows immerses the building into nature as one continuous, unobtrusive structure, without sacrificing the privacy of its inhabitants. Many of the rooms were tailored with privacy as a focus. The bedrooms, en-suites, cinema and music room allow for total privacy from the outside world if wanted.

Our design studio worked hard to produce an end result that is both versatile and breathtakingly beautiful. This new home is a wonderful addition to Sevenoaks and will accompany the silhouette of this picturesque landscape for many years to come.

Summer Decorating Ideas

CREATE A COASTAL RETREAT

“There’s something undeniably restful about an easy, breezy coastal-inspired decor scheme. It works well in any room of the house but is particularly wellsuited to living spaces, bedrooms, and bathrooms. The calming blues and crisp whites found in the Riviera, Aqua & Mineral colourways of our Portland fabric collection (pictured below) can be easily combined to create a soothing decor scheme that is synonymous with this laid-back nautical style. When combining striped fabrics, choose stripes with varying widths and patterns for a well-considered look.” advises Debbie.

Debbie continues, “The coastal decor trend can be as formal or as informal as you like, so have fun with it and create something that appeals to

you. Fabric that features coastal-inspired designs such as sea birds, corals, and boats are a great way to add personality and a splash of colour to your scheme. Finish the look with washed woods, natural jute rugs, and accessories such as seascape wall art and ship-worthy lighting.”

OPT FOR CLASSIC COUNTRY

“A classic country-style decor scheme takes inspiration from the natural world to bring colour, pattern and texture to a room in a soft, inviting way” explains Debbie. She continues, “To achieve this look combine natural materials such as wood and stone with layers of soft furnishings. This will bring warmth to your interior and create a welcoming country-style space that is easy to live with. Soft furnishing has a significant impact on the overall feel of a room, so choose your fabrics wisely. Layer plains and patterns carefully; when using patterns on upholstery it is best to keep the cushions plain or go for a plain fabric for the upholstery, and experiment with a mixture of colours and patterns on scatter cushions and throws.”

The Country Journal collection (pictured above and below) is perfect for those wanting to create an elegant country-style look. Debbie comments “Inspired by the serenity of nature, Country

Journal features studies of alliums, woodland grasses, and meadow flowers alongside beautiful ferns and flower heads - there are also classic coordinating fabrics including a classic stripe and small-scale designs. The colour stories are based on heritage paint colours making it an ideal choice for those wanting to create a sophisticated country-style interior.”

HOTEL CHIC

“Dressing your bed with a mixture of cushions in varying shapes and sizes, adding plush throws, and hanging stylish floor-length curtains are all great ways to help create a hotel-like feel in a bedroom” advises Debbie. She continues, “Cleverly layered textiles in different fabrics will not only create a cohesive look but will build a feeling of luxury. One of the most important factors to consider when combining different fabrics is the colours that are used. Ensure that they are tonal, so they complement one another; mix patterns and plains within a coordinated palette to create a harmonious scheme.”

“When it comes to using pattern, large-scale designs work best when used on large, statement pieces such as a dramatic pair of curtains or headboard. If space allows, go for drapes – the longer and wider the better for a dramatic hotel feel. In smaller spaces, using a pattern on a statement headboard or piece of furniture will add drama without overcrowding the room” comments Debbie.

BRING THE OUTDOORS IN

A botanical decor scheme is perfect for the Summer months and is a great way to create a link to your outside space. Debbie comments “To create a blissful botanical-inspired interior choose fabrics that reflect the great outdoors - leafy patterns in varying sizes are ideal for this scheme and look beautiful paired with real house plants. A botanical theme is suitable for any room of the house but works particularly well in a conservatory or garden room where you can incorporate your garden view.”

“Traditionally a conservatory is used as an extra seating area to enjoy the garden, but they actually make fabulous dining rooms too. Conservatory dining areas offer a great opportunity to experiment with pattern and colour and often it is the fabric that pulls a whole look together. From napkins to window dressings, there are endless

avenues to explore when designing your space” advises Debbie.

ORIENTAL INSPIRATION

Oriental decor schemes often conjure up feelings of peace and calm making them ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Debbie comments “For a zen-like space with a modern feel try basing your colour palette on a tranquil blue colour. Blue is set to be on trend for Summer 2023 and is both soothing and invigorating, offering plenty of design versatility. Used with crisp white and oriental style fabrics, it creates a cool calming feel - consider adding a statement piece of furniture in a standout colour such as a strong yellow to really make it sing.”

The Siyuri fabric collection offers a modern take on the traditional Chinoiserie design, and the Delft colourway (pictured above and below) is ideal for creating a blue decor scheme inspired by the Orient. Debbie comments “Large-scale prints in the Siyuri collection feature cranes in-flight and mandarin ducks, floating serenely on oriental lakes, surrounded by delicate water lilies. Bonsai, and other trees synonymous with the Chinoiserie style, can be seen throughout the collection in luxurious jacquards and rich detailed embroideries. Smaller scale, structured Chinese lattice designs, and softer textural fabrics are also available, allowing customers to easily combine fabric patterns to create beautifully layered, harmonious interior schemes.”

FOLLOW THE SILK ROAD TO SUSTAINABILITY

Ancient weaving skills meet the most contemporary of yarns in the latest addition to Weaver Green’s exquisite Silk Road collection. Hardwearing fibre, spun from waste plastic bottles, is purposefully hand-woven to create floor coverings that keep their good looks, both indoors and out. These gorgeous kilim rugs truly are a beautiful celebration of the best of old and new.

Better yet, by taking plastic bottles out of circulation, these flat-woven, silky, soft-to-thetouch rugs help keep our oceans free from pollution. So they look good – and make you feel good.

Weaver Green is proud to champion the skills that go into kilim weaving, helping to prevent this artisan industry from dying out. This incredible new collection is made using a highly durable, premium kilim weave. Traditionally crafted for nomadic tents, the weaving of kilim rugs requires huge skill, which is passed down through the generations.

The new Anatolia, Cyrus and Faro Sky Blue Rugs showcase a vibrant, yet serene, light blue in a choice of contemporary patterns. These flatwoven rugs are so durable, they are perfect for use in kitchens, under dining tables or on garden patios. Made entirely from recycled plastic bottles,

they are machine washable as well as being UV stable, stain and water-resistant.

The Anatolia Sky Blue Rug comes in six different sizes, from 150cm x 90cm up to 450cm x 300cm. Taking inspiration from Anatolia, one of the most important junctions on the Silk Road, and considered the birthplace of kilim weaving, it features traditional Bukagi and Kurt Agzi motifs. The ecru and Sky Blue colourway, accented with deep red, will brighten any dark corner or hallway.

Inspired by the Ogee motifs discovered on the tomb of Cyrus the Great, the ancient King of Persia, the new Cyrus Sky Blue Rug features a geometric pattern, which suits both modern and traditional interiors. With a beautifully soft drape, non-toxic dyes are used to create the sky blue and ecru colourway. It is sure to look gorgeous in a dining room, conservatory or garden.

The Faro Rug echoes the Sky Blue and ecru tones, but takes its simple geometric design from antique Swedish rugs. Lay it down for a tranquil air in a bedroom, put it under garden furniture for a flash of colour or even hang it on a wall – its uses are endless!

Suitable for both indoors and out, all Weaver Green’s rugs are child and pet friendly. Their cosy underfoot feel is as soft as wool and uninteresting to moths and mites, which is great news for allergy sufferers.

Priced from £235 each design is available in six sizes, To see more of this beautiful new premium kilim collection visit weavergreen.com
