LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK
"LIVE LOCAL LOVE LOCAL SHOP LOCAL" Get Caught Shopping Local!
Because the Greater Flag Chamber believes that a healthy business climate and a thriving community are inseparable, we ask you to play your part and please SHOP LOCAL! The most prosperous and inviting communities across our great land are those with many small locally owned businesses that give their communities a distinct character and flare. Sound like Flagstaff? Well it is! We’re fortunate that Flagstaff is one of them. For many years, the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce has supported and promoted SHOP LOCAL because we know that the lifeblood of our small business community relies on high volume of consumers taking advantage of the great products they provide. If you’re like me, you like choices and small businesses offer unique and diverse items that we really cannot find in other types of stores. You don’t have to leave Flagstaff to find top notch retailers, great deals and exceptional customer service!
When we Shop local, we are helping retailers that provide a valuable tax base for the government, and much needed jobs for local residents. In addition to providing a tax base for city services like street repairs, fire protection, trash collection, small businesses provide a tremendous amount of support to non-profits too so they can provide for those less fortunate. It’s obvious that everything we’re looking for cannot always be found in Flagstaff, but please before you go out of town or look online, look around and shop in your hometown first. There’s great value shopping here in your backyard. Shop Flagstaff first so your money stays LOCAL.
Now more than ever with labor rates rising, business needs to feel confident that they can make it and keep their doors open with a larger consumer base, not a smaller one. Keeping your dollars local will add to the prosperity of our community and our quality of life which we all enjoy. If you were to go to a community down South and do your shopping, you are elevating their economy. The Chamber
asks you to stay put and shop here to elevate our local economy. Lots of great local businesses cater to outdoor recreation gear, culinary delights, boutique style clothing and jewelry, beer and wine, river running, snowboarding, skiing, you name a retail need, we likely have an outlet in Flagstaff with those items.
So please LIVE LOCAL- LOVE LOCAL- SHOP LOCAL! WHY? Our Greater Flag Chamber motto states it the best: BECAUSE A HEALTHY BUSINESS CLIMATE AND A THRIVING COMMUNITY ARE INSEPARABLE.

Green Business Certification
Program Grows with New Businesses/Non-Profits
It is with great pleasure that we welcome the newest partners in the Chamber's Green Business Certification program: Flagstaff Station Market Cafe, B3 Construction LLC, Mountain Sports Flagstaff.
The Green Business Certification is an initiative of the Greater Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce supported by APS and Unisource Energy services that creates a standard in environmental stewardship by which northern Arizona businesses and non-profits can strive toward.
The Chamber believes that our business community can lead the way in sustainability and that by offering a certification process, accredited entities gain recognition for their efforts and have the opportunity to show the community their concern for the wellbeing of northern Arizona and the planet. Guidelines of the certification include measures and strategies to conserve water and energy, as well as reduce waste and carbon output.
Specific goals of the program include:
• Incentivizing sustainability through broadcasting the efforts of local businesses
• Developing attainable standards that businesses and non-profits can take actionable steps toward
• Partnering with business leaders to develop education programs that help businesses implement strategies to reduce waste and emissions, while conserving resources.
• Influencing local policy by leading a businessfirst movement that incentivizes self regulation of environmental strategies.

Northern Arizona Healthcare Northern Arizona Health & Wellness Village
Careful Consideration Not Taken Lightly
NAH’s pursuit to relocate the current Flagstaff Medical Center just north of Ft Tuthill is the result of years of analysis, deliberation and careful attention to both NAH’s and the community’s needs. The current campus is bisected by two public streets, preventing efficient delivery of care, and magnifying wayfinding confusion.
Five different master plan efforts over the last 20 years have not been able to overcome the challenges that our campus at 1200 N Beaver St presents. The NAH Board of Directors has voted 16 times to proceed with various stages of the project.
Priority #1 is the Community
This project started with the aim of advancing NAH’s ability to provide world-class health care to the residents and visitors of northern Arizona. Leading up to and throughout the application process

with the City of Flagstaff, NAH leaders have conducted hundreds of meetings with neighborhoods; education organizations; community groups; public services; local, state and regional governments; tribal representatives; national government officials and more.
Coming out of these meetings, multiple changes to the design of the overall Health and Wellness Village, as well as the hospital and ambulatory care center have been made. Given the importance of sustainability public meetings, NAH has made multiple additional commitments (at a cost of millions of dollars) to help the City of Flagstaff progress towards its goal of carbon neutrality by 2030. schedules.
Commitment to Sustainability
NAH was among the first to voluntarily sign onto the HHS Health Care Sector Climate Pledge (July 2022); committing to reduce organizational emissions by 50% by 2030, and achieve net-zero by 2050. The new hospital and ambulatory care center are significant components in NAH’s commitment to achieving these goals. The improved operational efficiencies of the new hospital could reduce helicopter-based deferrals in half, eliminating over 1,300 metric tons of CO2 per year.
Through this project, NAH will expedite solar panel construction — installing them on top of the
parking garage within 18 months of completion. Significant design efforts will result in the reduction of water consumption by at least 22 million gallons per year. All buildings will meet at least EnergyStar 75, contributing to a 45% reduction in energy use for the new facility, compared to the current FMC hospital performance. Natural gas consumption will be reduced by 78%, with the ambulatory care center being 100% electric. Nearly 4 million pounds of steel has been pulled out of the building design, eliminating over 4,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions. Only 40% of the site is being developed, with more than 30% of the site remaining as undisturbed forest.

Matt Kent, President/CEO
Meteor Crater Enterprises Inc.
https://meteorcrater.com/
Meteor Crater is a place that needs little introduction. 50,000 years ago during the Pleistocene Epoch, a nickel-iron meteorite estimated at 160 ft across slammed into the earth 37 miles east of present day Flagstaff at 29,000 mph. The resulting impact released 10 megatons TNT of impact energy and left behind an impression 3900 feet in diameter and 560 feet deep, the best preserved
Q: How did you come to be in this profession?
Matt: After a lifetime in the tourism and hospitality industry, I was approached by a recruiter on LinkedIn who said “I have the perfect opportunity for you! Have you ever heard of Meteor Crater?” An interview process started that opened my eyes to the wonders of Meteor Crater, and the beauty of Flagstaff. It is the best decision I have ever made in my professional life.
Q: How long have you been in practice?
Matt: I have been at Meteor Crater for four years on September 17, 2023.
meteor crater on the planet. Today over a quarter million people a year visit Meteor Crater and stand in awe as they witness the power of the momentous event and the precarious balance that Earth exists in within the universe. Meteor Crater has long been a part of the northern Arizona landscape and is an important part of regional economy.
Q: Where do you see the biggest growth potential for your practice?
Matt: Flagstaff has such a wonderful history of science and space Travelers just do not know about it. With millions of people traveling to the Grand Canyon every year we can establish Flagstaff as a premiere destination for astrotourism and bring more visitors to out town.
that are associated with Meteor Crater, like geology and astronomy, and share it with students and children of all ages across NorthernArizona. We hope to fuel their passion for science and help them find their way to a career path that would allow them to pursue those dreams.
Q: How do your services enrich the quality of life the community?
Q: What has been your biggest workplace thrill or accomplishment?
Matt: The biggest thrill has been the establishment of the Meteor Crater Educational Foundation. Through this 501c3 non-profit entity we are going to share the various sciences
Matt: Nearly everyone you meet in Northern Arizona has a passion for science of some sort. By opening the Planet Science store in Flagstaff, Meteor Crater has created a hub for those interests. We have created a store front for fossils, telescopes, NASA items, and even fun sci-fi items. In Planet Science and at Meteor Crater, you can now take
those hobbies and live and feed them. This is especially true for kids and families who can do things together.
Q: What’s worse to you than failure?
Matt: I hate seeing people gifted with amazing talent and abilities not pursuing them. Every success story is infused with failure and trouble. But perseverance and a sheer willingness to succeed brings dreams to fruition. And too many people just give up. Give up on life.
Q: From whom do you seek business advice?
Matt: In this arena, Drew Barringer has been a beacon. His wisdom, knowledge, and friendship were invaluable.
Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in your profession?
Matt: Have fun! Science is fun and we learn so much about who we are and the world around u s. That same wonderment we had as a child laying in the grass and looking at the stars, or collecting rocks in our yard, is the same joy and fun we should carry into this profession.
Q: How would you describe your personal brand? Please explain how you drive your brand in daily business.
Matt: My brand is all about growth. Pushing ourselves to learn more, do more, and be the best version of ourselves we can be. On a daily basis I challenge myself to learn and evolve. Not to be stagnant. And then I look for staff and peers who
have maybe stopped at obstacles or not happy on their journey, and I encourage them. Point out their talents and try and remind them how much they have to offer.
Q: What do you do for fun?
Matt: I am a bad golfer who really loves playing though. I have a love for music and for art. And I love to cook!
Q: If you could have one super power what would it be? Tell us why that ranks #1.
Matt: My superpower would be the power to heal. I lost some loved ones too early and unexpectedly, and it was an incredibly helpless feeling to be able to do nothing.
Q: What inspires you?
Matt: Laughter. I love seeing people have fun and express joy. When people are laughing they are bonding with each other, they are forgetting about burden and just being alive. It kicks my happiness up to the highest level when I hear people laugh.
Q: What about Flagstaff makes it the best place for you to live?
Matt: Hands down the people. I moved from Florida, where I lived in places like West Palm Beach, Tampa, Orlando. And there was this feeling of social classes and division. When I came to Flagstaff I was immediately welcomed and engaged by the people here. When I go to the restaurants and stores, I can not tell the difference between the wealthy executives and the working man. Everyone is the
same and treated the same. This town cares about who you are as a person not what you do or have. It I the quintessential American hometown. I love it.
Q: To what do you attribute your business success?
Matt: My mother. She was a single Mom raising 8 boys by herself. And although we were in poverty, she instilled in us the belief we could do anything. The belief that we were not limited by our surroundings and that we could accomplish anything. I always just expected I wouldbe successful because of that confidence she gave me.
Q: What is more important for you today than 10 years ago?
Matt: Life. As I reach this age and point in my life, you start to value how lucky you are just to get up every day and see the mountain and the trees. The smell of hot coffee and the smile and embrace of people you love. Its all a gift.
Q: My number one rule when striving to be greater is…
Matt: Believe in your talent and do not compare yourself to others. Be you and put your own handprint on life. It is yours after all.
Q: In 10 years, I hope to be...
Matt: Retired and feeling a great sense of accomplishment. Fulfilled with what I have accomplished as a member of this community and what I was able to accomplish at Meteor Crater. Oh! And fulfilled that my golf game by then is much better than it is today!
New Pathways Hypnotherapy
A lot of people are curious about hypnosis and how it works. Hypnotherapy is highly effective for people who are ready to change, but are stuck in patterns of behavior that they can’t get out of by themselves.
They are stuck in those patterns for a reason. Although they want to change consciously, their unconscious prevents that change for some reason. There is a conflict between their conscious wants and desires and their unconscious attitudes, perceptions, and beliefs.
Your unconscious mind gives you the invisible roots of your conscious thoughts, habitual thinking, and habitual behavior.
To create lasting change, old patterns of thought, belief, attitude, & behavior need to be interrupted. During hypnosis, the unconscious is open and receptive to accept suggestions which seed in fresh attitudes and ideas to resolve conflicts between your conscious wants and desires and your unconscious beliefs.
Mark Dessauer is the owner of New Pathways Hypnotherapy, and provides a solution-oriented approach to each client. After a career in teaching at the high school level, Mark knew there was still more he could do to influence people positively, so he embarked on a career in Hypnotherapy.
Hypnotherapy is different from cognitive behavioral therapy because you don’t need to talk on and on about your problem or your background in depth. Cognitive-behavioral therapy targets your conscious mind. Mark use hypnotic suggestions to target your unconscious mind.
Hypnotherapy supports your mental health, emotional health, and physical health.
Hypnotherapy:
1. Discourages ambivalence, insecurity, and self-doubt
2. Encourages determination, self-trust, and resiliency
3. Promotes treatment gains and enhances treatment effectiveness
4. Can be combined with practically any aspect of other treatments
Sessions can be done online through zoom or in person in the downtown Flagstaff office. Mark can be reached at (928) 600-980 or mvdessauer@gmail.com.
