From his coastal home in southeast Victoria, Glyndon Ringrose has maintained a relatively low profile since retiring from professional surfing. Today, Ringrose devotes time to his family and shaping worthy sea crafts for which he is well-known. If Glyndyn had his own Wikipedia page it would read something like this. Glyndyn Ringrose is a former ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) surfer, esteemed shaper, husband, father and Christian. He was voted number three in Surfing Victoria’s Top Ten Surfers of the modern 50 year era and was named ‘Best Newcomer’ in his maiden year on the WCT. I hit the record button on my dictaphone and Glyndyn proceeds to detail his unique story of a life devoted to surfing, family and faith. Progressing rapidly from local boardrider competitions through to state rounds, Australian titles and on to the ACC (Australi an Championship Circuit), Glyndyn was soon boarding planes and pursuing a career as a professional surfer on the WQS (World Qualifyi ng Series). This rapid rise doesn’t surprise me. He is an unquestionably nice bloke, but I sense that behind those blue eyes a steely self determination is housed. His qualifying campaign was no cinch, but it wasn’t the struggle that many surfers experience slogging it out year after year to qualify for the top-tier competition. Glyndyn dropped from a seeding of 150 th to 16 thin just three years. He qualified for the following year’s WCT in 1998 with Taylor Knox the casualty of his rise into the top competition. The boy who grew up knowing little about surfing but riding dugout canoes for the shear pleasure —as only children can—was now a professional surfer on ‘The Tour’. Publicity followed as Glyndyn burst into the picture, defeating Hawaiian Word Champion, Sunny Garcia, in the first heat of his first event at the Gold Coast. It was an outstanding maiden year, breaking out from obscurity and being heralded as one o f the most promising youngsters on the tour. “The first year I got on the WCT I was just so confident, everything just flowed super smoothly,” Glyndyn recalls. “I was confident with who I was, where I was travelling and everything was on the up. ” It’s during this period in the chat that we get on to the topic of religion. I’m musing over whether to ask Glyndyn about his religious beliefs but the conversion naturally takes that path. He has had faith his entire life and I’m interested to find out how Christianity and the ‘Hollywood’ tour interrelated. He says the tour had a strong party element during that period but he found it easy to control himself when others didn’t, or couldn’t. “It was still very party orientated but (Kelly) Slater was just coming back in and it was getting a little bit cleaner, a bit more professional,” he tells me. “On tour anywhere, there’s always the party. I didn’t get caught in that party scene. I associated with all the guys and hung out with them, but I didn ’t have that urge to go out and get smashed after an event.” Married to his wife, Kate, early on in his career and holding a strong religious moral compass, Glyndyn was removed from the distractions that have brought down many a promising surf career. “I got married early. I got married at 21, so I didn’t have an urge to go out and party like everyone else,” he says. “I had also committed my life as a Christian to try and better myself as a person. I had gone a bit astray (earlier on). Obviously mum and dad were missionaries and I had been brought up in a full Christian lifestyle, but I had done my own thing for a little bit when I was younger, gone a bit astray, partied and all the rest of it.” As my dictaphone ticks over the one hour mark back in the Island Surfboards’ tearoom, Glyndyn begins to fidget and I can see he is keen to get back into the shaping bay where I found him. For him, shaping surfboards has been a constant throughout his life. It began preprofessional career, continued during his career and he now logs about 30 hours in the bay each week creating custom boards. I ask him how long he has been making boards for Island, with a laugh comes, “Well, I began when I was 20 and I’m 40 now.” Glyndyn leads a busy life but he says “variety” keeps him fresh. He is a father of two boys, a shaper, a builder and renovator, a coach and a mentor to many of the island’s young surfers. Ability and faith took Glyndyn ‘Ringa’ Ringrose from surfing dugout canoes to matching it with the world’s best surfers on the biggest stage; the two have not deserted him. Revelation 1:3 "God blesses the one who reads the words of this prophecy to the church, and he blesses all who listen to its message and obey what it says, for the time is near. A few months ago Coral Shuster met with Randy Nolan, of FLOW, so that they could talk about how to start up a bible study to try to help all of the groms come together to hear and learn the Word and about of the Lord. “I feel that God has brought Randy and I together so that we could help all of these groms find their part in God's plan”. The bible study is called "Walk in the Light on Wednesday Night". The first few weeks have been a great success and we will continue these once a week from now on. Please join us for our bible studies on Wednesday evenings at 6:00pm at the Todd Holland School of Surf in Cocoa Beach. We should be finished by around 7:00pm. FAITH - TRAINING - PERSEVERE Faith Matthew 9:22 Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed at that moment. Luke 18:42 Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.” 2 Corinthians 5:7 For we live by faith, not by sight. Romans 10:10 For it is with your heart that you believe and made right with God, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. Our 4th Summer Surf Jam is in the books and what a time we had. This was the first year we actually had waves everyday of the event and we skated a new park and ate at a few new places too. This year we had 19 surfers come along to surf, skate and dig into the word of God. Our focus was: what is Faith, Training for trials and Persevering through hardship. Coach “Reverend” Rahal took the lead and with a coaches’ enthusiasm and delivery, laid Truth on the table for the boys and dads to hear. So over 4 days we focused on what is our faith, as an individual and outside of our parent’s faith and what does that faith provide us? We spoke about training in our faith. As an athlete trains for competition and a warrior trains for battle, we too must train for what the world is going to throw at us so that we can stand firm in our faith. And we spoke about how to persevere, what to focus on and who to focus on, when suffering or feeling like life is hard. At the end we spent a lot of time talking about God, why we are here, what our purpose is and what our goal is. Is life tough? Sure it is, but with Jesus we have a future. Many people spend their time looking at this life, the 100 years on earth, and that is all they see. We must look at the opportunity that 100 years offers and the eternity that follows. There is a song that says “I don’t want to gain the whole world but lose my soul”. Are you living a life that is all about the here and now? Are you so focused and worried about your time on earth while ignoring where you will spend eternity? So we need to investigate, find Faith in Jesus, Train in the Faith and Persevere through the hardships until that time comes when we hear “Welcome home”. Next year we will be at it again, so if you are interested in hitting the road with us, contact us at flowsurfes@yahoo.com.
Training 2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 1 Timothy 4:8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 1 Corinthians 9:25 Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Persevere Hebrews 10:36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. James 1:12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. Revelation 2:3 You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary.

Name: Tommy Daniels Lable: NXTC Surfboards Hometown: Holmes Beach, Anna Maria Island How long have you been shaping: 22 years shaping, and 25 years building boards full time How did you get started shaping: I gave up a chance to attend Ringling art school, to instead followed my passion of surfing! I moved to the North Shore right after graduating High school and was fortunate enough to have friends and room mates in the industry. I've been an Artist all along and still consider myself one. There's really nothing like a surfboard, it's functional art. How many boards have you shaped: I'm right about 6000, and considering the majority of those I painted, laminated, and sanded all myself. What is your shaping specialty: Along with all my performance oriented shapes, I also do a wide range of classic and retro shapes and also do kite boards. Being such a diverse shaper allows me plenty of flexibility. If I had to do the the same basic board over and over, I'd get bored! Favorite Local surf spot: Beach Street! Kegging A-frames when it's doing its thang! Do you have any pets: At the present, no pets, they have all passed on. What model and size board are you currently riding: Currently I'm riding my " Blue Collar" model, it's a 6'2" - thruster, squash tail. This is an extremely versatile shortboard and lies between a performance "Penetrator, and my grovel series of boards. It's my best selling short board for typical Florida beach breaks. Do you have any single fins in your quiver: I do own and ride several single fins, all of them are long boards ranging from 9'0" to 9'6" Favorite surf destination: Hawaii Dream surf destination: Maldives boat trip or Indo by boat Who has influenced your life the most: My Grandfather, hands down! Favorite fin system: As a manufacturer, I say they all have there pros and cons, but if you look in my own boards, I ride FCS Fusion. Favorite non-surf movie: National Lampoons Animal House Do you play any instruments: About the only instrument I can play is the juice harp! If you have ever watched Walking on Water or any of the WOW surf movies you will have heard Josh Garrels music. Look him up. The years since 2011’s Love & War & The Sea In Between haven’t been easy for Josh Garrels. He’s wrestled with serious concerns on every possible front—physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Even the ever-growing spotlight of his music career became part of the problem. With the release of his latest album, Home, Garrels says he’s never paid so high a price just to release a set of songs. Your last album, Love & War, was a big success. Was there a lot of pressure to follow up with Home? I think that’s going to be part of the story of this album. It was literal exhaustion. My vision was getting blurry. My fingers were going numb. My motor skills in my arm weren’t working right. I was having heart palpitations and shortness of breath. It turns out I was almost having anxiety attacks. There’s responsibility all over, you know? There’s anticipation and expectation. I didn’t realize I was carrying that stuff. In some ways, on paper, I’m living the dream. This music is supporting the family, I have a studio in my backyard, and shows are selling out. But I was entering into emotional and physical breakdown. I had to just set it down for a month and rest. I had to put things back in perspective. How did you figure out how to break through that? Honestly, it was spending time with God. It sounds generic, but there was a true realization that I was holding really tightly to something. It took months to figure out answers to, “What am I fearing? What am I anxious about? What am I feeling is my responsibility that actually is not?” I can now let go. Ironically, the songs that were coming naturally were the ones pulling in home space, rather than the big epic journey like Love & War. These songs are much more domestic, in that they are about marriage, lessons from my children and the relationship of fathers and sons. It was interesting that those were the songs that I gravitated to in the process of making them. I had to push through this strange threshold. I really just assessed my heart, all the way back to when I was a child. Things that were perpetrated against me that maybe I had held onto, things I had perpetrated. There were lies I believed about others or myself. It was pretty deep. I don’t want to use the word “deliverance,” but by going to the deep areas and flushing things out, I was amazed at how the symptoms began to disappear as I got my heart and soul in the right place.
“Hold fast my people and sing Through peace and through suffering All for the joy that it brings, to be free. It’s gonna cost us everything To follow one Lord and King True love endures everything To be free”
The new album is missing the hip-hop element of your other music. Was that purposeful? I don’t know that it was. This album is about homecoming, and it didn’t feel like a real hip-hop album. This album has softness to it. All the songs are pretty down tempo. I still love hip-hop, and my hope actually is that in the coming year, I can collaborate with producers and make sets of fivesong EPs. That’s where I feel like I’m headed. I have probably three projects in mind that could be five-song EPs where the production time would be a lot shorter, and I’m calling on other producers and artists to get under the hood. Each one would have its own focus and sound. This one took so long. This one require something of my soul to get right. By Matt Conner

Who We Are FLOW is open to everyone; men, women, youth, boys, girls and families who desire to share God’s love through their actions towards surfers. We are an outreach where we care for surfers at the beach, at surf contests and at special events. Although we do surf and have surfers involved you do not need to be a surfer to serve God. Please take a moment to pray for our group and see if you, or any of your friends or family, feel drawn into our mission field. If you have any questions feel free to approach any of the FLOW guys or gals at the events or e-mail us at flowsurfers@yahoo.com Monthly Events We meet each month, either in front of First Peak, at Sebastian Inlet State Park or at contest sites. We arrive at different times according to the tide or contest start times, we set up our tent and coolers and we serve those around us. We either help the contest get set up and broken down or we help beachgoers who are carrying arms full of chairs, umbrellas and coolers. In between we surf, pass out snacks or drinks and FLOW stuff. Afterwards, we gather for a devotion and discuss upcoming events and opportunities to serve others. Our devotions are very casual and for geared to first timers to Bible scholars. All are welcome to hear God’s word and ask questions like, “What does that have to do with me?”. Special Events We try and pack up the vans and see our local sites. The wave pool in Orlando is obviously a favorite as well as our Summer FLOW Jam where we jam as many kids into two vans and travel up coast and camp our way back home while surfing as many breaks a possible. There are lots of ways to be involved just come and see. We serve at National and Regional Contests: ASF Florida Contests, ASF Championships, NSSA Southeast Contests, NSSA East Coast Championships, Quiksilver King of the Peak, Gnarly Charley Surf Series, Walking on Water Tour, Rip Curl Grom Search…

Foam Forum Polyurethane vs. EPS Epoxy www.boardcave.com Blog When ordering your next board, you are going to have to make a decision between going with standard PU/PE (polyurethane blank, polyester resin) or EPS/Epoxy (Expanded Polystyrene, otherwise known as styrofoam). What are the benefits and drawbacks of each? Since Clark Foam (the leading PU blank manufacturer in it’s time) closed it’s doors in 2005, EPS had a jump forward as an option while board builders had to wait and test through the issues of new PU foam formulas from new blank manufacturers. EPS had been used by some since around the 70’s or earlier, but it took this major blank disaster to get the majority of board builders start using the alternative. In this day in age, however, EPS foam blanks have become a regular option for most of the surfboard industries brands. The performance attributes, though slightly different than PU, are just as notable. Now, even the top level elite surfers will sometimes prefer to use EPS/Epoxy boards over PU/PE for certain waves or conditions. They are both great options, but for us regular surfers who can’t afford an endless quiver, we need to think about these differences and make an informed decision before ordering our next board. How they stack up: PU/PE boards are a little more affordable than their EPS/Epoxy counterparts. They sit a little lower in the water, helping to keep your rail under, giving you a nice “knify” feel when slicing through the waves face. They are a touch heavier than Epoxy boards so they do tend to handle choppy conditions better and are less prone to being bounced around. Also, as a result of them sitting lower in the water, they make great barrel machines in hollow waves as the rail will sit more in the water instead of on top of it. They still have the best flex characteristics which we are constantly trying to mimic in EPS/Epoxy boards through different applications of reinforcements, etc, that we will touch on at a later time. You can’t go counting EPS out as an option though. EPS is a standard option for many brands these days and for a number of good reasons. One of the most notable difference between EPS and PU is the weight. EPS foam is much lighter than PU which makes for a great option for the surfers that love to take it to the air. They are easier to whip around quickly making them great in the air as well as on a wave that lets your perform quick snappy turns. They seem to have a more buoyant feel to them, as if they sit a little more on top of the wave instead of in the wave. This can be beneficial as you can get up to planing speed faster, and it becomes easier to clear through flat sections on clean days. The combination of these factors has made them a great option for small wave boards. But which one’s for you? There are so many other factors that can be touched on but for our purpose here, we are trying to give you a better idea of which basic construction and attributes you may want out of your board. This will be determined by what you are looking for in the characteristics of your board. Both options have strong advantages and really can’t be compared when put side by side as they perform so different. It will just come down to what you prefer in the end.
Why Blank? Like a surfboard, we all begin as a raw blank; scuffed up, yellowed and not so pretty. God works in us to shape us for His glory and according to His plan. We don’t know exactly what our final shape will look like, but He is the master shaper and we have to trust in his plan. You may want to be a big wave gun and he may be shaping you into a fish. Why a fish? He has a plan to use you when a wider outline, slightly thicker rail and fuller tail is needed. How well will you work, for His glory, if your outline is for Pipe and you are surfing Ocean Ave.? In this shaping bay, we will never be glassed. The Master Shaper is never finished with us.
