Lord, Please clear my head of all distractions, and my heart of burdens I may bear, so I may perform my very best, knowing that you'll always be there. Please lift me up before the moment, so through your eyes I may see, and have a clearer understanding, as the heat unfolds before me. With great courage I will meet this challenge, as you would have me do, but keep me humble and remind me, that my strength comes from knowing you. Then when all eyes are upon me, at the end, I will turn their eyes to you O' Lord, to glorify of your name. -Amen

The Boards and Waves Expo in Melbourne Florida is one of the few hardcore surf shows in the USA. It's all about surfboards and hardgoods and next to Surf Expo, is the East Coast's main surf industry exhibit. The man behind this show is Dave Seehafer, an industry veteran and entrepreneur who started the show because he wanted to honor the shapers and people who build our surfboards and to connect them with the general public. We’ve known you for awhile now and you’re super passionate about putting this event on. Why? I've been fortunate enough to have worked in the surf industry for over 30 years. I love surfing and surfboards; without surfboards, the rest is just add-ons! The Expo has two elements in its creation. The first is to showcase the amazing surfboard shapers, board builders and craftsmen in this industry who work under less-than-ideal conditions, making less-than-average pay to create the boards that give us so much joy! From the earliest board builders (Velzy, Weber, Hobie, etc.) to today's grom shaping his first board in the garage or shop class, surfboards are the focus!! Here in Brevard County, we have one of the largest concentrations of shapers on the entire East Coast so the Expo is created to put them in the spotlight and give them some support! The second goal is to create a unique setting where consumers and shapers can chat face-to-face, discussing all of the unique elements that go into board performance--type of blank, fin template, bottom contour, two/three/four/five fins, channel bottoms, longboards, short boards, fun shapes and so much more. Since the closure of Clark Foam, there have been lots of changes, improvements and new technologies incorporated into board building--the consumer needs the right information to ensure that he or she is getting the perfect board for their ability, weight, wave height and more. The consumer can buy a board right there at the Expo after talking directly to the shaper or order a custom just in time for the summer hurricane swells! An additional focus for this year's Expo is to honor and recognize two icons of East Coast surfing and board building--Pete Dooley of Natural Art Surfboards and Dick Catri of Catri Surfboards (Dick unfortunately passed away earlier this week but his memory lives on). What are some of the challenges of putting together an event like this? The biggest challenge is to get the shapers to build boards to display at the Expo--so many are struggling, just shaping enough to buy supplies for the next batch of orders. Many don't have the resources to build boards which would display their true abilities & craftsmanship. The second challenge is the cost of producing an Expo of this magnitude. It's self-financed and I try to make it as costeffective as possible so that as many shapers as possible can be a part of it. What can people expect from the Boards & Waves Expo? It's the only Expo of its kind on the entire East Coast, where surfers & paddlers can talk directly to the shapers who build the boards, to the fin companies who design the fins, to the foam companies who manufacture the blanks. They can gather a huge amount of information in a short period of time to ensure that they have the most knowledge when ordering or buying their next board. Boards aren't cheap these days so you want to be stoked, not disappointed, with your purchase! In a perfect world, how big would this event be? With the Boardroom Show in California as my yardstick, I'd love to have 150+ shapers and craftsmen from the entire East Coast and thousands of consumers celebrating the magic & passion of surfboards over a two day period! Anything else you want people to know about Boards & Waves Expo? Next time we have the exhibit come see surfboards being shaped, watch surfboards being painted, meet top shapers from the East Coast, discuss fins & foam directly with the manufacturers, win some awesome raffle prizes, honor Pete & Dick, and hopefully walk out with a new board....or at least leave with the information to ensure that your next board performs exactly the way you want! Who We Are FLOW is open to everyone; men, women, youth, boys, girls and families who desire to share God’s love through their actions towards surfers. We are an outreach where we care for surfers at the beach, at surf contests and at special events. Although we do surf and have surfers involved you do not need to be a surfer to serve God. Please take a moment to pray for our group and see if you, or any of your friends or family, feel drawn into our mission field. If you have any questions feel free to approach any of the FLOW guys or gals at the events or e-mail us at flowsurfers@yahoo.com Monthly Events We meet each month at local surf event or contest sites. We arrive early and either help the contest get set up or we help beachgoers who are carrying arms full of chairs, umbrellas and coolers. In between we surf, pass out snacks or drinks and FLOW stuff. Afterwards, we gather for a devotion and discuss upcoming events and opportunities to serve others. Our devotions are very casual and are geared for first timers to Bible scholars. All are welcome to hear God’s word and ask questions like, “What does that have to do with me?”. Special Events We try and pack up the vans and see our local sites. The wave pool in Orlando is obviously a favorite as well as our Summer FLOW Jam where we jam as many kids into two vans and travel up coast and camp our way back home while surfing as many breaks a possible. There are lots of ways to be involved just come and see. We serve at National and Regional Contests: ASF Florida Contests, ASF Championships, NSSA Southeast Contests, NSSA East Coast Championships, Quiksilver King of the Peak, Gnarly Charley Surf Series, Walking on Water Movie Tours, Rip Curl Grom Search… Get plugged at: flowsurfers@yahoo.com www.fellowshipledonwater.com www.instagram.com/flow_surfers/ www.facebook.com/FellowshipLedOnWater

Huntington Beach Icon, Pastor and Hall of Fame Surfer, ‘Sumo’ Is a Messenger of Joy While Battling Cancer Talking to him, you wouldn’t know it. He’s jovial. Upbeat. A perennial figure on the North Side of HB pier, and a local pastor, Sumo’s an institution in Surf City. He’s also unmistakable. A long, white, wispy beard descends from his chin – the kind that grows in length and turns whiter not with age but with wisdom and life experience. And with a shaved head and a bulldog build, it’s not difficult to determine the origin of his nickname. If you’ve strolled along Main Street once or twice, or gotten a surf in at the pier, you’ve likely seen the man – probably grinning widely, as is his custom – maybe on his longboard. For years, Sumo’s been the unofficial chaplain of the surf community in Huntington Beach. He’s led local paddle-outs following tragic loss, and been a singular voice to addicts, the homeless, and the vulnerable. “I never thought my life would go this way, to tell you the truth,” he says. “Growing up in Hawaii, my parents used to bring people in, you know homeless people and stuff, and I didn ’t think I’d ever be like that. Now, I’m a spitting image of my parents.” Sumo’s mission, in particular, is to connect with the youth. “We all know stories in our industry of our heroes’ dark paths,” he says. “And it’s so sad that they don’t have someone they can talk to. In the last two weeks I dealt with four suicides. All young men. To me that’s four too many.” The path that led Sumo to Huntington Beach was a winding one. Back in Hawaii, in his youth, Sumo got immersed in what he explains rather cryptically as the “local culture.” In truth, it was a drug-infused darkness that caused him to leave Hawaii and ultimately settle in Southern California. He ultimately found God – a transformative moment that would alter his life’s trajectory completely. Now, his journey has brought him to a place where he leads a congregation, preaching with authority. “The people that come to our church are the people you wouldn’t expect to go to church. That’s who I attract.” Being an ambassador for Cobian’s Every Step Matters campaign, he says, is fitting. “I think the fact that I ended up in Huntington Beach, that I’m talking to you, none of it’s coincidence. It’s God-incidence.” Not to mention, quite literally, Sumo walks from door to door on any given day, on a mission to make himself known by anyone in the community that might need a helping hand or someone to talk to. “I used to do 40 houses a day,” he says. “I used to do them in an hour and a half. Just [knock, knock], ‘Hi, my name’s Sumo and I’m a pastor here,’ give them my card and tell them if there’s anything they ever need to call me… You know, so in that sense, yeah, every step does matter.” I mentioned that Sumo has cancer. Over the course of our conversation, he makes only two references to it, and that ’s with prodding. “The way I see it, I don’t have cancer, cancer has me,” he says. Fighting words. He also discloses to me that while stage 4 cancer patients typically have a 5% chance of living, his doctors have told him he’ll soon be in remission. Incredible news. Sumo continues to describe the importance of the community around him; the collection of people that breathe meaning into his life and give him strength; the same community that inducted him into the Surfing Hall of Fame alongside legends like Shaun Tomson, Andy Irons, and Tom Carroll this year during the U.S. Open. The level of support he’s received from Surf City at large is a testament to the man. But in Sumo’s terms, it’s all quite simple. “I love this city,” he says. “And I want to make it good.” Editor’s note: As Sumo continues to receive cancer treatment, our friends at Cobian want to help relieve some of the financial burden. That’s why 100% of the proceeds from Cobian sandals will be donated to Sumo and his family if you enter 4SUMO at checkout online.

Psalms 3:1 “Lord, how they have increased who trouble me! Many are they who rise up against me.” We go through seasons in life. Some are calm and pleasant, while others seem to be like violent storms, with waves crashing upon us from almost every direction. While we may feel as though we are under assault, this is not a new phenomenon. King David, Israel’s most godly king, was no stranger to difficulty. He faced the same struggles we face, and perhaps a few more. At this point in his life, he was blindsided when he learned that his own son had turned against him, organized an army, and was attempting to overthrow the kingdom. His response to this hardship is filled will practical examples for us to cling to, in the midst of our own trying times. First, David prayed. His prayer consisted of crying out for help, rehearsing his circumstances to the Lord, and choosing to cling to the promises of God. Whatever you are facing, it is important to keep in mind that you can cast all your cares on the Lord, because He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7). Perhaps it was in prayer that David made a decision that would prove to protect the nation and save countless innocent lives. What may have looked like giving up, proved to be a move that would ensure victory and save the nation. Second, David knew the Lord would help Him. He writes, Psalms 3:3 who lifts up my head.”

“But You, O Lord, are a shield for me, My glory and the One

Because God was his shield, David knew he did not have to defend himself and God would protect him. Because God was his glory, David sought above personal feelings or comforts, to do only what was right in the eyes of God. Because God would ultimately lift David up, he knew that the best place to be was prostrate at His feet. No matter what you are facing, the solution will be found as you follow the example of David and cry out to God.

Finding time to dig in the Bible is probably our number one excuse as to why we are not reading Gods word. I would say, take whatever time you have and read something from the Bible. Even if its not an entire chapter, just read a verse or two and get the ball rolling. Once you have that in place here are two other tools that help get me through the day. One is a quick devotional and the other is a radio station that teaches the Bible throughout the day, in 30 minute messages. Here is a link to Jim Gallagher’s site that daily gives you little biblical nuggets to sink your teeth into and get you thinking for the day. Log onto https://pjimgallagher.com The other is Calvary Chapel Vero Beach Radio at 97.7 on your FM dial (I hope you added your best radio voice there) or listen online at www.ccvb.fm. This is a great way to start your day as your riding the bus to school or driving to work. Put your headphones on and get a morning message.

We all know and love Tommy Coleman, as a surfer and a person, and this Spring he had the opportunity to represent the United States in the International Surfing Association World Games in Biarritz, France. Tommy was one of only 6 US surfers chosen for the event and to say it was a unique experience would be an understatement. Not only was the experience a once in a lifetime one but the people that surrounded him were once of kind also. The US team is coached by Joey Buran (1984 Pipe Master and The California Kid). Joey has a great story to tell about his life which was turned into a movie called Beyond the Dream, check it out. On top of that Joey is the Senior Pastor at Worship Generation in Huntington Beach, CA (http://www.worshipgeneration.com) and happens to be the father-in-law of local Sebastian Inlet surfer Nate Gallagher. Nate is the youth minister at Calvary Chapel Vero Beach. So if you see these two in the line up, give them a thumbs up.

It was such an amazing experience. It brings everyone together like family and it was so rad to support the crew!! - Tommy Coleman From the Instagram of Coach Joey Buran Tommy Coleman 15 year old from Vero Beach, FL. His Surfing is fast and explosive and includes a full arsenal of huge airs. He crushed the WQS events earlier this year in Florida coming away with a second and third. Under the radar outside of the East Coast, his dynamic style is a great fit for the French beach breaks!@tommybooboo1 @isasurfing Not to leave this post out Rachel Presti 15 years old from Melbourne Beach, FL. WOW! So impressive at last week's Junior Team Training in Oceanside! She will be "West Coast" for the next few months...and for sure she will be a legit contender for all the big events coming up this summer! @rayraysurf

The WildCard fin adapter makes twin tab fins compatible with single tab fin systems A California company has launched a fin adapter that allows the use of FCS II fins in Futures Fin box systems. The idea behind the device is that consumers will be able to purchase boards with Futures -type fin boxes but still use any FCS-type fin thereby not having to purchase new fins. “We noticed a problem with the plethora of fins and the incompatible fin systems in our quiver,” said Julian at Wasabisurf. “We’ve created a two-tab to one-tab fin adapter constructed with ultra lightweight carbon fiber that allows FCS-type fins to be compatible with Futures-type fin boxes.” The adapters are fabricated with a carbon fiber composite construction. Each device has unique geometry cants that tilt at 4-to-5 degrees. Center adapters are designed shallower (1/2" base depth) to fit typical rear (or center) Futures compatible fin boxes. According to the company website the 3-step process for converting FCS II to a Futures system is as follows: 1. Insert FCS type fin into its corresponding WildCard Fin Adapter (Left, Right and Center/Rear). 2. Secure FCS type fin to the WildCard Fin Adapter using the provided stainless-steel set screws. 3. Insert the adapter and fin assembly into the corresponding Futures type fin box (Left, Right and Center/Rear) and then secure the assembly with the fin-box set screw.

Are Your Tall Enough??? We have four boys who are separated by only five years. When they were little, we, like so many others families, spent a lot of our time visiting amusement parks. As the older ones grew, they were attracted to the bigger rides, and their younger brother wanted to do whatever they did. The problem was, many of the rides had a standard. If you were not a certain height, you could not ride. At times, this created quite a controversy. We tried everything to make him just a little taller, we spiked his hair, we bought shoes called “Heelies”, that had a wheel in the back, and provided a couple extra inches to his height. However, time and time again, when we reached the entrance, he was excluded. He simply did not measure up. Just like the amusement park rides, heaven has a standard for entrance. That standard is not height, growth, accomplishment or good deeds; the standard is righteousness. But not just any righteousness; we must have the righteousness of Christ. In Matthew 5, Jesus declared, we must be perfect, as our Heavenly Father is perfect. But, the righteousness of Christ is actually so high it can never be reached by human achievement. When we realize our own achievements will not gain us access to God, and instead, we come to Him through faith in Christ, we experience a great exchange. Our sins are placed on Him, and His righteousness is given to us. Paul put it like this, “For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” 2 Corinthians 5:21 Have you stopped imagining that you are good enough for heaven? Have you stopped spiking your hair and wearing “Heelies,” thinking you can trick God into letting you in? Have you come to God through faith in Christ and received His righteousness, in place of your sin? If not, now is the time. Pray with me. “Lord, I recognize I am a sinner, and You are the Savior. I ask you to forgive me of my sin, and fill me with Your righteousness.” If you made that decision, you have become a child of God. Take a moment and let us know so we can encourage you to follow Christ. Contact us at church@ccvb.net - Pastor Jim

NSSA, ESA, ASF, Gnarly Charley, USA PRIME, NKF‌ you name it these kids are at it. What a great time we have traveling around with all of you at contests, up and down the cost. These are just a few of our, and your, photos taken along the way. Why Blank? Like a surfboard, we all begin as a raw blank; scuffed up, yellowed and not so pretty. God works in us to shape us for His glory and according to His plan. We don’t know exactly what our final shape will look like, but He is the master shaper and we have to trust in his plan. You may want to be a big wave gun and he may be shaping you into a fish. Why a fish? He has a plan to use you when a wider outline, slightly thicker rail and fuller tail is needed. How well will you work, for His glory, if your outline is for Pipe and you are surfing Ocean Ave.? In this shaping bay, we will never be glassed. The Master Shaper is never finished with us.
