Who We Are FLOW is open to everyone; men, women, youth, boys, girls and families who desire to share God’s love through their actions towards surfers. We are an outreach where we care for surfers at the beach, at surf contests and at special events. Although we do surf and have surfers involved you do not need to be a surfer to serve God. Please take a moment to pray for our group and see if you, or any of your friends or family, feel drawn into our mission field. If you have any questions feel free to approach any of the FLOW guys or gals at the events or e-mail us at flowsurfers@yahoo.com Monthly Events We meet each month at local surf event or contest sites. We arrive early and either help the contest get set up or we help beachgoers who are carrying arms full of chairs, umbrellas and coolers. In between we surf, pass out snacks or drinks and FLOW stuff. Afterwards, we gather for a devotion and discuss upcoming events and opportunities to serve others. Our devotions are very casual and are geared for first timers to Bible scholars. All are welcome to hear God’s word and ask questions like, “What does that have to do with me?”. Special Events We try and pack up the vans and see our local sites. The wave pool in Orlando is obviously a favorite as well as our Summer FLOW Jam where we jam as many kids into two vans and travel up coast and camp our way back home while surfing as many breaks a possible. There are lots of ways to be involved just come and see. We serve at National and Regional Contests: ASF Florida Contests, ASF Championships, NSSA Southeast Contests, NSSA East Coast Championships, Quiksilver King of the Peak, Gnarly Charley Surf Series, Walking on Water Movie Tours, Rip Curl Grom Search… Get plugged at: flowsurfers@yahoo.com www.fellowshipledonwater.com www.instagram.com/flow_surfers/ www.facebook.com/FellowshipLedOnWater
I recently came across an article floating around Facebook by Jon Foreman, the singer for the band Switchfoot talking about Why Switchfoot won’t sign Christian songs. It seems everyone wants to know if Switchfoot is a “Christian” band. Foreman, in particular, takes offense to this question and concludes with no degree of subtlety that his lyrics need not be conformed to any kind “Christian Box” to honor God. The article struck a tone with me because it’s something that I struggle with on a weekly basis. I work for a snowboard brand called Zion Snowboards, and like Foreman I get asked regularly, “Isn’t that a Christian brand.” It’s not a bad question; we work with groups like Snowboarders and Skiers for Christ and our name, Zion, has its roots as the “City of God” or “fortress” in the Old Testament (Psalm 87:2-3). It begs the question though, “Did Christ die for a snowboard brand?” We make it our mission to bring some of the best snowboards in the world to market. We see to it that they’re fun to ride, can hold up under abuse, and are available at a reasonable price. We don’t take ourselves too seriously and have a team of riders that fit these values. This is our witness for Christ in a culture that desperately needs it. Each of us has been given skills and passion for what we do, and it’s our job to use those excellently. God doesn’t produce crap, and his kids shouldn’t either. We work hard not to be relegated only to the customer base that can be found in a church basement; although we do appreciate all of the support we can get. In his years on earth, Jesus spent a large part of his time eating with tax collectors and prostitutes. That is where we want to be. We make it our job to be at the industry trade shows where deals are made after a night of partying together and the marijuana smells are about as plentiful as the wind. This is where we think Jesus would be. Christ didn’t die for our company (He didn’t do it for Chick-Fil-A for that matter either), but he did die for you and me. Not everyone you’ll see on our staff or team is a follower of Jesus yet, but this is where we think we should be: riding lifts, bumping shoulders at trade shows, taking trips and eating pizza with a lost, unique culture that we’re blessed to be part of. Please share this article and let me know your thoughts…

Citizens for Clean Water (C4CW) is a non-profit organization based out of Stuart, Florida. The organization was founded by a group of surfers in 2013 when their local waterways were plagued by pollution from high bacteria. The following years continued with toxic blue-green algae blooms, which contained a bacteria that poses a human health risk and kills marine life. They protested the local government to do something about the poor water quality. After years of empowering the community and working together to promote change, the state finally passed a bill to help fix the man-made problem causing the blooms. C4CW’s objective is to bring awareness to water quality issues all over the world. Our organization spreads the message of how vital having clean water is, how water quality is affected by man, and how important each of us are in being a voice for the environment. Since 2013, we have held community events all over the state, including beach clean-ups, educational socials, water-related activities, and rallies. We attend legislation meetings, update our website and social media, and promote a clean water lifestyle by teaching people how they can be a citizen for clean water.
As our organization grows, we are stepping to a new phase with exciting new goals. Another mission we are taking on is starting a series of mini documentaries, bringing awareness to other water-related crises, interviewing the people affected by it and finding out what is being done about it. We have always believed that the first step to finding a solution is informing people of the problem and presenting ways we can work together to create a movement for change. C4CW is a 501c3 charitable organization that works to educate the public by hosting educational events and establishing a presence in communities for clean water. We create materials like flyers, stickers, literature pamphlets, apparel, and coloring books to spread the clean water message. Since we are a non-profit, it takes donations to be able to produce these elements. Your contributions to C4CW go right back out to where these products are needed. If you’d like to be apart of the cause through giving. C4CW is also always happy to have volunteers at our events and encourages anyone who has ideas for the mini doc series, water quality solutions, or comments in general to contact us at www.citizensforcleanwater.org

Caroline Marks, 15, Will Join Championship Tour in 2018 Caroline Marks has officially qualified for the 2018 women's Championship Tour, making the 15-year-old Floridian (who now spends half her time in California) the youngest surfer on next year's roster as well as the lone Championship Tour rookie. The top six surfers on the women's Qualifying Series (QS) earn spots on the Championship Tour the following year, and while Marks ended her 2017 season ranked No. 7 on the QS, two surfers above her have already double qualified via the Championship Tour, opening up spots for Marks and New Zealand veteran Paige Hareb, who spent six years at the Championship Tour level before falling off three years ago. Marks grew up in Melbourne Beach, Florida, where she learned to surf with her brothers when she was eight. In 2014 she made the move to split her time between Florida and California, making the most of San Clemente's worldclass waves and year-round surf, helping to improve her technique. Marks emerged as a serious threat at the age of 13, when she won the first of two Vans US Open of Surfing titles in the Pro Junior division. Those performances earned her a chance to surf in her first CT event at Lower Trestles in 2015, making her the youngest surfer ever to compete in one. She's been training with Mike Parsons for more than a year now, joining the likes of CT stars like Lakey Peterson and Kolohe Andino. Caroline's surfing includes a powerful backhan d attack, which she enjoys refining at her home break of Lower Trestles. She has a penchant for bigger moves, too, which should transla te well at the next level. The 2017 season was Caroline's first real attempt at qualifying, and with her 2nd place finish at the QS 6,000 Pantin Pro in Galicia, Spain, and 3rd at the Supergirl Pro in Oceanside, California, she made it a very successful one. Do Not Fear In the midst of the battle between Satan and Jesus, we are given one of the great lessons in how to overcome temptations and live godly in Christ Jesus.
“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.” Revelation 12:11 The blood of Christ was shed to provide forgiveness for all our sins. No charge brought against the Christian will stand in the court of heaven. Satan’s charges have already been answered at the cross. Instead of living in guilt and fear, we can live in confidence, knowing Christ has covered our sin. The “word of their testimony” refers to the things that Christ has accomplished in their lives. One of the greatest weapons in our arsenal, is to look back at what Christ has already accomplished for us. Remembering yesterday’s victory can create confidence for tomorrow. “They did not love their lives to the death.” The one who has surrendered all to Christ is indestructible, until Christ calls him home. Fear often keeps us from accomplishing what Christ has called us to. The cure for fear is trust. I was sitting with a friend recently in a quite volatile situation, when he remarked, “If you have to fear something, you might as well fear God”. We have a great promise that one day the enemy of our souls will be bound up and cast into a pit. Until that time, we must fight. Trusting in the blood of Christ, the testimony of His Word, and the commitment we made to follow Him.

Here’s What the 2018 WSL Schedule Should REALLY Look Like By Dylan Heyden @ The Inertia
With rumors swirling that Margaret River may get cut from the 2018 schedule, and other such changes, now is as good a time as any to give my completely unsolicited opinion about what events should stay, go, or be added for next year. Here’s some food for thought. There are three stops in Australia, and only one in the continental US this year. Three of eleven stops on tour are right pointbreaks. Six of eleven are warm enough to exclusively wear boardshorts. What about a dedicated cold water location? What about a stop in Sri Lanka or West Africa? Keep: Snapper, Margies, Fiji, J-Bay, Lowers, France, and Pipe The Tour could use some shaking up, but let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Snapper, Fiji, Lowers, France, and Pipe are all contests that can be really fun to watch. Remember Parko’s middle finger barrel at Snapper? Or the Code Red swell (that was too big for the contest) at Fiji. J-Bay is probably the best righthander in the world. Lowers is a high-performance Mecca. France produces some insane to watch tubes. And Pipeline is Pipeline. As for Margaret River, it ’s likely to get the boot next year because Snapper and Bells have deeper roots in competitive surfing history and have bigger title sponsors. But with John John ’s performance in this year’s contest, do you not want more? Plus with the audible to run at The Box or North Point, Margies is packed with potential. Cut: Bells, Rio, Tahiti, and Portugal Ok, so what to cut? How about one Australian contest to start. There’s three, and Snapper and Margies are clearly more entertaining than Bells. Rio remains on schedule year after year because, well, Brazil is a huge market and every year the event sites are packed with people. But Brazil is bigger than Rio and has way better waves so why not go elsewhere in South America? (See below). Te ahupo’o is a great wave, but really only worthwhile to watch if it’s absolutely macking, and if Fiji remains, why have two tropical lefthanders? Finally, Portugal gets the boot because with so much potential elsewhere, it ’s worth sacrificing. Add: The Search, Nias, Norway, and Chicama If the WSL were to keep 11 stops on the tour after all this slicing and dicing, that leaves four open slots to fill. First, b ring back the Ripcurl Search. When the Search existed, it changed locations every year. From Barra, Mexico to El Gringo, Chile to San Franc isco. And it was awesome! And unpredictable! And viewers like unpredictable! There are arguments to be made that the Search was neocolonial in nature, causing traveling surfers to flock to new locales, leaving devastation in their wake. But that seems over blown. Still, what about running at kinda already known locations that aren’t on tour? Or visiting burgeoning surf communities in Sri Lanka or West Africa? I’m sure locals would be psyched. As for the other slots, let’s add Nias, Norway, and Chicama. I’m not sure what the logistical challenges of putting on contests at Nias and Norway would be, but a grinding tropical righthander and a dedicated cold water spot would be awesome adds. And with so many amazing spots in South America it’d be a shame to focus only on Brazil. Hence Chicama. Surely it’d be amazing to see the best surfers in the world mount the longest wave in the world, right? Right? Ok, so after all the dust settles, here’s what the 2018 world tour could look like. Are you listening WSL? Snapper (Mar 14-25) Margies (Mar 29-Apr 9) The Ripcurl Search (April 12-24) Chicama, Peru (May 9-20) Fiji Pro (Jun 416) J-Bay (Jul 12-23) Nias (Aug 11-22) Trestles (Sep 6-17) France (Oct 7-18) Unstad, Norway (Oct 20-31) Pipe (Dec 8-20)

HYDRO-FOIL! Being dragged behind a boat while strapped into a device called an Air Chair seems as unlikely a scenario as any for a lightbulb moment, but for Hawaiian big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton, such scenarios are not uncommon. Years prior, Hamilton and friends hit upon the concept of being towed into gigantic waves behind a jetski, which put in place a movement now known as tow-in surfing. This time, Hamilton took note of the hydrofoil fitted to the underside of the chair that elevated the rider above sea level, and applied the same logic to riding waves, preferably big ones. "One of the big issues we had with tow-in surfing was running into these massive chops in the waves, which is the one thing you don't want on a 50-foot wave," Hamilton told the ABC. "The idea of an elevated ride seemed like a way of negating that issue, and we worked towards developing the concept of a board fitted with a foil." Early prototypes required the rider to be clipped to the board while wearing modified ski boots and propelled into waves again with a jet ski. But through a process of trial and error, Hamilton and several other devotees have refined the concept to its current incarnation. Hamilton, who also helped usher in stand-up paddle board riding, adapted the concept to the hydrofoil board, and now strokes into waves with a paddle without the need to be tethered to the board with boots. "It's like flying," Hamilton said of the ride.
"When the water is smooth and still, it's just an effortless glide that is unlike anything else I've experienced out in the water." Search for endless ride Hamilton said a happy by-product of the development was the realization a surfer could ride an unbroken wave for indefinite distances across the open ocean. It is a concept he likens to whales gliding along underwater behind ocean swell, and one in which he reached speeds of up to 80km/h. "This is the most efficient wave-riding instrument that I've ever come across, and the potential is limitless," Hamilton said. "I have no doubt we will be able to ride waves as far as they can travel. The only limit will be your physicality. For now the waves can travel much further than we can physically be able to."
Now these are not cheap. The average foil complete we saw online ran around $1,500 and in some cases you can spend that much, just for the foil. Here are a few we saw online but ask your local shaper if they are experimenting with foils and what they have in stock.
The Blame Game Judges 10:14 “Go and cry out to the gods which you have chosen; let them deliver you in your time of distress.” It is common for people to show no interest in God until calamities arises. As long as life is going their way, they are not concerned with God, but as soon as things get difficult, suddenly, they cry to God for help. Those who have shown no interest in the ways of God, suddenly blame God for the calamity they are facing, and cry out to Him to fix everything. Many in Israel found themselves facing the threat of death. They had left the Word of God and were living life their own way. This “free living” led them once again into hardship, and they cried out to God for deliverance. Time and time again, they cried out for help, and God provided deliverance, but this time was different. This time God responded, “Go and cry out to the gods which you have chosen; let them deliver you in your time of distress.” If you are living life by your own standards, ignoring the Word and ways of God, you cannot expect God to bail you out when things go wrong. He may respond by telling you to ask your own self-will, or the gods of possessions, or pleasures for help. Fortunately, for Israel and for us, this is not the end of the story. We read, Judges 10:15-16 “And the children of Israel said to the Lord, ‘We have sinned! Do to us whatever seems best to You; only deliver us this day, we pray.’ So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the Lord. And His soul could no longer endure the misery of Israel.” Instead of treating God like their cosmic servant, they realized they had been living wrong. They took inventory of their lives, removed all the things that were forbidden by God, and made strides to get their lives to line up with His Word. We read, as God observed their repentance, He could no longer resist His own desire to come to their aid. Today would be a good day to take inventory of your life. Are you living according to your own standards and asking God to bless your ways? Or have you surrendered to Him and His Word? Let’s put away anything that is foreign to Him, that we might experience the blessed life He promises to those who follow Him. Pastor Jim

Lord, Please clear my head of all distractions, and my heart of burdens I may bear, so I may perform my very best, knowing that you'll always be there. Please lift me up before the moment, so through your eyes I may see, and have a clearer understanding, as the game unfolds before me. With great courage I will meet this challenge, as you would have me do, but keep me humble and remind me, that my strength comes from knowing you. Then when all eyes are upon me, at the end, I will turn their eyes to you O' Lord, to glorify of your name.
-Amen

Why Blank? Like a surfboard, we all begin as a raw blank; scuffed up, yellowed and not so pretty. God works in us to shape us for His glory and according to His plan. We don’t know exactly what our final shape will look like, but He is the master shaper and we have to trust in his plan. You may want to be a big wave gun and he may be shaping you into a fish. Why a fish? He has a plan to use you when a wider outline, slightly thicker rail and fuller tail is needed. How well will you work, for His glory, if your outline is for Pipe and you are surfing Ocean Ave.? In this shaping bay, we will never be glassed. The Master Shaper is never finished with us.
