Kate Nelson aka Plastic Free Mermaid has just launched the Plastic Free Survival Guide Source: Surfers Village

Plastic is bad. But plastic is also so damn convenient. We use it to keep our morning coffee warm during surf checks, we tote groceries home in plastic bags for post-surf grinds, even some of our surf wax comes wrapped in plastic. In short it's part of our daily surf life. But it doesn't have to be. Here are some helpful hints from blogger Kate Nelson to cut down on your use of plastic. Plastic never biodegrades and each individual piece poses a serious threat to wildlife. In just one week we go through 10 billion plastic bags worldwide. Australia burns through more than 50k takeaway coffee cups every half hour. In the USA an average of 2.5 million plastic bottles are used every hour and over 500 million straws are used daily. The choices we make truly matter—if each of us cuts back, we can lower these statistics. Plastic Free is a challenge to avoid single-use plastics. It may seem daunting! To prepare for success, follow these simple steps: 1. Audit your Trash Hold on to your plastic trash for the next few days to understand what kind of plastics you will have to replace and consciously avoid 2. Plan your Shopping • Restructure your routine to include the farmer’s market & bulk food stores, this helps avoid plastic packaged foods that line the grocery stores • Stick to the produce section of the Grocery Stores • When you go shopping bring your own bag • Buy things in glass jars and reuse them for food storage 3. Make your own Meals • With all the fresh veggies and fruits from the markets and bulk grains, seeds, nuts, pastas, spices and herbs from the bulk foods store, you have all the ingredients you need to craft up some delicious, nutritious meals! • Pre-make granola for breakfast, crackers for snacks, and salad dressings to set yourself up for success. 4. Make your own Beauty Products • Plastic containers of face lotions and shampoos are packed with harsh chemicals, avoid drenching your skin (the largest organ in our body) in unknown ingredients and stick with simple, organic ingredients. • Use natural oils like organic black sesame oil for skin in the winter and coconut oil in the summer. • Use baking soda with water for shampoo, apple cider vinegar with water for conditioner • More recipes: iquitplastics.com 5. Adopt the “Bring Your Own” Mentality • Try to always anticipate where you might encounter single-use plastics and be ready with your own reusable item! • If you forget everything else, try to avoid these four items, considered the worst and most easily avoidable: - Plastic bags: Bring your own bag, use a box, or even your t-shirt like a pouch. - Straws: Skip the straw, they suck! (Need convincing? Search “straw up turtles nose” on Youtube) - Drink bottles: Reuse, refill and bring your own bottle, or abstain if it comes in plastic. - Takeaway Coffee Cups: Get your own reusable cup! If you forget a cup, ask the friendly barista if they have any mugs for “here.” In fact, consider pausing and enjoying your coffee there at the cafe. If all else fails, skip the plastic lid, go topless on your coffee.

Who We Are FLOW is open to everyone; men, women, youth, boys, girls and families who desire to share God’s love through their actions towards surfers. We are an outreach where we care for surfers at the beach, at surf contests and at special events. Although we do surf and have surfers involved you do not need to be a surfer to serve God. Please take a moment to pray for our group and see if you, or any of your friends or family, feel drawn into our mission field. If you have any questions feel free to approach any of the FLOW guys or gals at the events or e-mail us at flowsurfers@yahoo.com Monthly Events We meet each month at local surf event or contest sites. We arrive early and either help the contest get set up or we help beachgoers who are carrying arms full of chairs, umbrellas and coolers. In between we surf, pass out snacks or drinks and FLOW stuff. Afterwards, we gather for a devotion and discuss upcoming events and opportunities to serve others. Our devotions are very casual and are geared for first timers to Bible scholars. All are welcome to hear God’s word and ask questions like, “What does that have to do with me?”. Special Events We try and pack up the vans and see our local sites. The wave pool in Orlando is obviously a favorite as well as our Summer FLOW Jam where we jam as many kids into two vans and travel up coast and camp our way back home while surfing as many breaks a possible. There are lots of ways to be involved just come and see. We serve at National and Regional Contests: ASF Florida Contests, ASF Championships, NSSA Southeast Contests, NSSA East Coast Championships, Quiksilver King of the Peak, Gnarly Charley Surf Series, Walking on Water Movie Tours, Rip Curl Grom Search… Get plugged at: flowsurfers@yahoo.com www.fellowshipledonwater.com www.instagram.com/flow_surfers/ www.facebook.com/FellowshipLedOnWater

“Happily, I’m an experienced boater,” man says after nearly hitting Jupiter surfers Source: Kimberly Miller Palm Beach Post 8

A man who said he is an “experienced boater,” was tracked down by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission last month after witnesses said he nearly hit surfers in the waters off Jupiter’s Carlin Park. Pierre Esperance, 63, is facing a misdemeanor charge of reckless or careless operation of a vessel, after the Jan. 4 incident that FWC officers found out about through social media posts. Esperance, who FWC said has a Quebec drivers license, is a member of the Palm Beach Boat Club in Riviera Beach. He was reprimanded by the owner of the club prior to FWC involvement. In a Jan. 5 email, the club owner “condemned” Esperance’s actions and said he was only authorized to be on the Intracoastal waterway, not open ocean, according to FWC. “Happily, I’m an experienced boater and I had no choice to go threw (sic) these surfers because it was the only way out,” Esperance allegedly responded in an email to the club owner after he was reminded he was only to be on the Intracoastal, according to the FWC report. Esperance was allegedly driving a 22-foot boat he had signed out from the club. The FWC report says he was within 60 to 180 feet of the shore when he came close to the surfers. Pictures show the boat between the breaking waves and beach. “It was crazy,” said Jim Tolliver, a Jupiter resident who was surfing that day following a cold front that cleaned up the head-high waves with an offshore wind. “I don’t know what they were doing. I’ve never seen anything like it.” Tolliver, who has been surfing for 40 years, said there were about 50 people in the water and the boat was coming dangerously close to some of them. “They came really close to me, but they got a lot closer to some of the kids out there,” Tolliver said.

FWC Officer Benjamin Hankinson, who was able to initially identify Esperance from pictures and comments posted on Facebook, said the boat was being operated at “planing speeds” – fast enough for the hull to lift out of the water. “Upon review of the investigation, the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office is direct-filing a reckless operation misdemeanor charge on the operator,” the FWC report says. The penalty for committing a first-degree misdemeanor is one year in prison and/or a $1,000 fine. For proper boating rules and laws refer to: www.myfwc.com/boating/regulations

'Make Waves. Move Mountains' celebrates the empowerment of women Today marks the launch of Roxy's new global campaign, ‘Make Waves. Move Mountains’. As a lifestyle brand that caters to women all around the world, ROXY has been inspiring women and dreamers since 1990. The brand’s overall mission has laid the groundwork of the ‘Make Waves. Move Mountains’ movement where ROXY celebrates the empowerment of women in action sports and beyond. The brand taps into their wellrenowned snow and surf athletes, including Stephanie Gilmore, Dara Howell, Lisa Andersen, and Torah Bright, as well as celebrities, such as Hailey Baldwin, Martha Hunt, and Chanel Iman, to help promote a message of strength and support to young women of any age, sport, or dream. “ROXY exists to empower women. From the day Lisa Andersen, the first female competitive surfer, ripped in her boardshorts, we have stood with pioneers who challenged the status quo. Today, more than ever, we must demonstrate our ability to push boundaries across all arenas. Make Waves Move Mountains is ROXY’s bold invitation to accomplish just that,” said Danielle McKenzie, ROXY Global Director of Marketing. "I'm so proud to be a part of this movement, especially as a ROXY athlete, because I want to encourage women around the world to never give up on the challenges in front of them,” said Dara Howell, ROXY skier and 2014 Olympic Gold Medalist. “In order to Make Waves and Move Mountains, it's so important for us to put our best foot forward every single day and keep your eye on all that you want to achieve. As ROXY girls, we can do anything we set our mind to." Innovating for women is at the heart of what ROXY does. For over 25 years, ROXY has created products and cultivated female pioneers that changed the course of boardriding and in doing so, empowered women to always challenge the status quo. In a digital age, ROXY aims remind women to experience the immense freedom found in reconnecting with the world’s natural surroundings. ROXY is on a mission to inspire women to find this freedom in their own way, so that they too can Make Waves and Move Mountains.

Always Waiting Daniel 5:27 “You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting” Have you ever wished God would write a message specifically for you? Perhaps hoping His finger would suddenly appear writing upon the clouds. Belshazzar had that experience. On the night before his death, the silence of heaven was broken when a warning was written on the walls of his palace. Sadly, Belshazzar ignored the warnings, did nothing in response to the message, and died that night not prepared to face eternity. While I do not expect God will write upon the walls of my home, I have found heaven is not as silent as we think. The Bible is filled with page after page of messages for mankind. Like Belshazzar, the question is not whether heaven speaks, but whether we are willing to listen. If you want to measure up when weighed in eternity’s balance, then you must look into the Word of God and live accordingly. The first step is to have our sins forgiven. This happens when we receive Christ and the pardon He offers through the cross. Second, we must decide to follow Him by looking into the Bible and doing what it says. Similarly, when a road map says turn and we turn, so when Scripture says change we change. Let’s not find ourselves in Belshazzar’s shoes, face to face with eternity and unprepared to go. Pastor Jim

Exodus 20:11 “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.” The Sabbath would serve a number of valuable purposes in the life of the believer. First, God wanted His people to rest. Since He designed our bodies, He knows what is best for them, and wants us to learn to take a break. It would do us good to set aside times to rest from our labors and concerns, simply focusing on the goodness of the Lord. Second, the Sabbath was designed to build faith. Israel was an agrarian society, whose existence depended upon the harvest. Yet, in the midst of harvesting the grain, they would be required to stop and rest for a day. Every seven years, they were required to let the land rest, and not plant crops. All of this was designed to cause Israel to trust in the provision that would come from the Lord. God wants us to realize, although we must work hard and apply the principles of the Word to our daily living, we must also learn to trust in His grace. Finally, the Sabbath would set Israel apart from all other nations. As the nation grew and developed trade with surrounding countries, they would stand out because of their refusal to do work on the Sabbath. Much of God’s law was designed with that purpose. He wanted His people to stand out. It was never the desire of God that we be hidden away in the crowd, but like Shadrach and his friends (Daniel 1-3), we stand above the culture and point the way to God. While we are no longer under the law of the Sabbath, the principles remain. Much of what God is doing in your life, is so you might learn to rest in Him and trust Him. Rather than looking at our daunting circumstances, we should look to the promises of His Word. He is also seeking to make us stand out. Not in a weird way, but because we are a people who are trusting Him, and living according to His Word. Like a city set on a hill, we will become the light of the world, pointing people to the Savior. Pastor Jim

We are not really related by blood, but we are bonded by many shared callings: Surfing, fishing, paddling and the good things that come with these pursuits. Things like fire pits, really good tequila, limes, and pre-dawn coffee. Above all we’re united by a belief in doing things the honest and pure way (which is not usually the easy way). We design and craft all our garments, and everything we make, with these passions and values in mind. Put our products to the test. Heed the call. Our Story Howler founders Chase Heard and Andy Stepanian spent their adolescent summers haunting the waters and fish of Florida and Virginia and riding the ripples those states call waves. Both Heard and Stepanian now live in Texas where they raise families, work hard, make music together, chase fish with fly rods and make runs to the nearest coast or river when the opportunity arises. Their vision for Howler – and the name Howler Brothers – was inspired by a sound they each heard on surf trips to Costa Rica: the call of the loudest animal in North America, the Howler Monkey. If you’ve heard it, you know how loud and startling the sound can be. But, after hearing it a few times, the sound becomes a part of the collective feeling of being in Central America and serves as a constant reminder that you’re in a good place, doing something you love. With this motional connection as a base line, Heard and Stepanian formed Howler Brothers to craft limited run, high quality clothing and goods that draw inspiration from the style and tradition of surfing and coastal sports. They set out to make gear that works in the water, on the boat, and around the fire pit when the stories are told. Clothes you might wear when you’re hearing Howler Monkeys from your hut after a day well spent. Or clothes to wear when you’re wishing you were. Our Products Howler Brothers clothing designs honor the soul, passion and timeless style of sports such as surfing and fly fishing but update historic garment ideas with modern influence from waves, water, geography, fashion and art. Every garment and accessory is crafted with functionality and attention to detail at the forefront. We avoid trendy or overly traditional ideas and use small batch production and collaborations with artists and craftsmen to create original, alternative offerings. Our base of operations, Austin, Texas, is miles from the nearest ocean but provides daily inspiration with its vibrant and diverse creative culture. www.howlerbros.com

Getting Ready Amos 4:12 “Prepare to meet your God, O Israel! Amos speaks of an event far more important than any luncheon, vacation, or travel destination. Amos speaks of us preparing for the unavoidable day when we will all come face to face with the Lord. No matter what your personal beliefs might be, the Bible assures us, everyone will stand before the throne of God, when this life comes to an end. The question is, have you done what is necessary in order to be prepared? Jesus told two parables to illustrate the preparations necessary to be ready to face God. First, He told the story of 10 bridesmaids who were awaiting the arrival of the groom. They were told to fill their lamps with oil as they awaited His coming. Five of these young women prepared themselves, and when He arrived they were welcomed into the celebration. The other five failed to do what was necessary, and were forbidden entrance (Matthew 25:1-15). The one thing that prepared these women for the coming of the groom was a lamp filled with oil. Biblically speaking, oil is often used to represent the Holy Spirit. Jesus is saying, the way to be ready to face the Lord is to be born of the Spirit; which happens when we trust in Christ for salvation. Jesus went on to tell another story. This time He spoke of a king who gave varying sums of money to three different individuals. The first and second took the funds and made investments with it, the third hid the money, out of fear of losing it. When the king returned he commended the first two and rebuked the third, for failing to prepare (Matthew 25:15-28). The illustration is quite clear. We prepare for eternity by making eternal investments. Jesus called this storing up treasures in heaven; which is done by using our time, talents and treasures in the service of the Lord. One day, time will run out for all of us. It is important that we prepare in advance for the day when we will come face to face with Christ. Pastor Jim

This year we had the opportunity to serve at the Florida Pro at Sebastian Inlet. We wanted to be able to offer the WSL women something to remember us by and at the same time creating an inquiry into a verse that offers God’s compassion. Psalm 63:7 was the verse that came to me and it was a joy to be able to meet these amazing surfers and offer them an opportunity to step into the loving protection of Jesus. I hope that we will have many more opportunities to share these wings and others over the years with you and surfers from around the world. The WSL has decided to continue the Florida Pro for the next two years so, if you missed the contest this year make sure to put is on your calendar for 2019 and 2020. The waves were super fun, the girls were amazing and the event was a huge success. We had the opportunity to pray with the surfers, pray for a few fans that came to the tent looking for comfort and were able to be that positive light that we feel needs to be at the beach. Why Blank? Like a surfboard, we all begin as a raw blank; scuffed up, yellowed and not so pretty. God works in us to shape us for His glory and according to His plan. We don’t know exactly what our final shape will look like, but He is the master shaper and we have to trust in his plan. You may want to be a big wave gun and he may be shaping you into a fish. Why a fish? He has a plan to use you when a wider outline, slightly thicker rail and fuller tail is needed. How well will you work, for His glory, if your outline is for Pipe and you are surfing Ocean Ave.? In this shaping bay, we will never be glassed. The Master Shaper is never finished with us.
