Waves and swell are created by wind. Around the earth, we have areas of high air pressure and areas of low air pressure in the atmosphere. Think of the air as liquid, as water. The areas of high pressure are constantly trying to fill the areas of low pressure. If you have an area of high water right next to an area of low water with no barrier between, the high water will flow to fill the area of low water. The transition of airflow from high pressure to low pressure is wind. When the wind blows over the ocean, it creates small ripples on the surface. As these ripples grow, the wind gets better friction on the ocean surface. After a period of time, these ripples grow into small waves or chop on the water. As the wind increases and continues to blow, the chop transforms into small waves, then into larger waves and then, if all goes well, into huge waves. Energy Simply put, waves are created when wind transfers its energy from the air to the water. Wave generation requires three variables: wind velocity, wind duration and wind fetch. The harder the wind blows, the longer the time it blows and the greater the distance it blows, the bigger the waves. Limitation of any one of these variables will severely restrict the development of wave heights and the transfer of energy into the water. As waves grow larger, the distance between waves will become greater, signifying more and more energy being transferred deeper into the ocean. As more energy is transferred deeper into the water, the waves have better ability to sustain that energy as they travel great distances across the oceans. The most common way to measure wavelengths is by measuring swell period, which is the time between successive wave crests as they pass a stationary point on the ocean surface, such as a buoy. Wave Decay Waves decay and get smaller the farther they travel. In the middle of a storm there is a confused mix of sea state. Various waves of different heights, directions and swell periods turn the ocean surface into a chaotic mess. We call this the wave spectrum. All of these waves are the result of different cycles of the storm, with the short-period waves generated by current winds in the local area and the longer period waves generated by winds earlier in the storm's life that have had a longer time to develop. As the waves move out of the storm area, they decrease greatly in size within the first thousand miles (more than 60 percent) and slowly thereafter. This is caused by three factors: short-period waves and chop dissipating rapidly once outside of the wind-generation area directional spreading of waves as they move away from the storm at different angles and the separation of waves as they travel forward at different speeds after leaving the storm area. This initial wave-decay process allows the underlying long-period waves to move out from beneath the messy short-period sea state in the middle of the storm. Once these longer period waves break free from the storm's confusion, they are easily identified as a more organized wave train, which we call swell. Direction Where the wind or swell is coming from. In the marine community, directions are always identified as the direction the swell or the wind is "coming from," not the direction it's headed. Degrees used are true degrees with north at 0 or 360 degrees (and then moving clockwise), east at 90 degrees, south at 180 degrees and west at 270 degrees. Northeast may be anywhere between 0 and 90 degrees, southeast between 90 and 180 degrees, southwest between 180 and 270 degrees and northwest between 270 and 360 degrees.

It was a great turn out on March 21st for the Eye Of The Storm Surf Contest. For those that have not heard, back on January 15th, 2015, the tip of Storm Portman’s surfboard went into her left eye after catching a wave, and caused severe damage. Storm is facing a long road of surgery and traveling to a city over 200 miles away for outpatient care. But that won’t slow her down, Storm is ready to get back in the water as soon as she gets the doctors ok. In The contest was run in fun waist + surf and double beaches ran most of the day. Over 100 people came out to support Storm and her family and raised over $6,800.
Isaiah 32:3 Then the eyes of those who see will not be blinded, And the ears of those who hear will listen.
Acts 1:8 tells us that we will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon us. And us, as followers of Jesus Christ, should be His witnesses, telling people about Him everywhere–in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH! Isn’t it ironic that we’ll brave some of the harshest conditions in the world for a brief moment of joy and excitement? We’ll travel to the other side of the world searching for waves, good snow, or a skate spot that we’ve seen in video parts. Even if it’s surfing in the Arctic! We can say this with confidence because we have done this ourselves many times. Maybe not surfed in the Arctic, but we’ve driven 2-3 hours just to surf some 2-3′ sloppy choppy waves and get a quick drop and bottom turn. We’ve flown across the U.S. just to snowboard a couple days on hard packed snow in the early ski season. The desire to ride sometimes seems to dominate all other needs or responsibilities. In this verse listed above, Jesus tells us that we will have the power of the Holy Spirit to go anywhere to tell others about Him. Through our joy found solely in Him, we can go with confidence literally to the ENDS OF THE EARTH to share his truth and Good News with others. This command given to us through scripture should come to us with pure joy and excitement, much like an opportunity to go surf in the Arctic even knowing that we may have to battle some of the “elements of life” to get that ride we are searching for. Our joy in Christ should be the motivation to go and share the great things He alone has done in our lives….not obligation, not the needs of this world, but the desire that He be glorified above all things. John Piper quotes pretty regularly that “The chief end of man is to glorify God by enjoying Him forever.” We hope you enjoy this short video described and linked to below and we hope this post will encourage you to step out of your “comfort zone” and travel the world for the glory of the Lord and the proclamation of what He has done!
Photographer Chris Burkard and Professional Surfers Patrick Millin, Brett Barley, and Chadd Konig brave sub-zero temperatures in the Arctic Circle to capture moments of raw beauty in conditions that rank among the harshest in the natural world. The bitterly cold seas and wind exact a large price on their minds and bodies, but the reward – adventure, amazement, and self-knowledge – draws them closer together and pushes them to tackle the next frontier in surfing. I don’t know what was going on around Christmas but we had a nice string of surf and that was a welcome relief when we planned our 1st Campout. Just after Christmas and before the New Year, Flow rented out the Inlet Marina Campground for a day of surf and a night of fun. The campground is located directly across from Spanish House, one of our favorite and best surf spots around. We were able to walk the 100 yards to and from the surf to the camp site for food, bathrooms… At night we used the grassy area overlooking the marina to set up our screen and video equipment. We watched the Summer Surf Jam video review, the GOSPEL message by Propaganda and the Rip Curl movie Instruments of Change. We had a great turn out, over 50 of you guys and gals came out to enjoy a day of surf and a night of fun. Tuesday saw the surf drop but a fun day was had at Sebastian Inlet with the low, incoming tide in the knee high range. This was great for the mini-groms. We will hold more of these so keep a lookout for future posts.

We are an outreach where we care for surfers at the beach, at surf contests and at special events. Although we do surf and have surfers involved you do not need to be a surfer to serve God. Please take a moment to pray for our group and see if you, or any of your friends or family, feel drawn into our mission field. If you have any questions feel free to approach any of the FLOW guys or gals at the events or e-mail us at flowsurfers@yahoo.com

It was December of 2007 when a simple idea was presented to a small group of South Florida surfers by a member whose life and family have been touched by autism. The concept of introducing children on the autism spectrum to surfing took hold and the group began planning for the inaugural Deerfield Beach event. Fundraising efforts help us fulfill our mission of bringing these life-changing events to as many communities as possible and to help fund autism research, awareness and advocacy. Fundraising would be conducted by soliciting local businesses to donate product and services for a raffle and through the sale of event specific T-shirts. Check out the Contest Guide for an event near you and go lend a helping hand.
By Steve Mizesko Living on the Gulf Coast of Florida is a blessing and a curse. The blessing is that the weather is always amazing, and you can play outside all year round. The curse, for us who enjoy surfing, is the fact that there is barely any swell….ever. You see, the thing about surfing waves is that you need actual waves. The Gulf is beautifully boring. Sometimes I am tempted to delete my surf forecast app because I know what I am going to see most of the time. “This weeks surf forecast is, drum roll please, flaaaaaaaat.” I know I sound depressing, right? Sorry! I wasn’t always this surf starved. You see, I grew up in the southern outer banks of North Carolina. We looked forward to hurricane season every fall, and it rarely disappointed. The waiting during flat spells was worth it after you feasted on these storm swells. Even when I first moved to Florida, I was able to travel to east coast spots like Sebastian Inlet, and I was usually greeted with some fun waves. But that was then, and this is now. I can honestly say I am experiencing a flat spell. I’m not just talking about surfing. I’m talking about life. My life is not as simple as it used to be, and I’m having a hard time adjusting to the new season I find myself in. Can you relate? Do you ever just feel…..blah? There’s no sense in pretending. I know we’ve all been there. Like me, you might be experiencing a flat spell of life right now. But wait, I’m a Christian. Aren’t Christians supposed to be happy and excited about life?! When we read the Bible we don’t see polished perfection in the lives and words of the saints. What I love about the Bible is the raw emotion and authenticity. The authors that were moved by the Spirit to write share the unedited highs and lows of their lives as they try to trust a God they can’t see. For instance, the Psalmist in chapter 42 says, “Why am I so depressed?” This is just one of many times the saints of the Bible express their doubts and depression, and God deemed these words worthy to be included in His inspired scripture. Why is that? First of all, I think God wants us to know we are not alone in this human experience. Secondly, God wants us to know that there is a cure for our restless hearts. As I look at my own situation, I wonder how I got here. Faith used to feel easier and more exciting. From my own experience, I have added more busyness and stress to my life. Instead of turning towards God more, I distract myself with social media or other activities. I know I’m neglecting my soul. I also know that my life can be full again and less flat. God has been good to me, and He has never changed. I’m the one who has changed. The good news is that if we follow Christ, He can bring life to our flat spells. Jesus says in John 10:10, “I have come that they might have life, and have it in abundance.” A full life is not found in what the world can give us. Popularity and pleasure will still leave our souls feeling empty. The early church father St. Augustine said, “Our souls are restless until they find rest in thee (God).” God’s cure for our restless souls will mean trading our reactions for His solutions. His solutions aren’t complicated, but they do require a change of perspective and persistence. The apostle Paul leaves us with three simple instructions for a full life. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, “Rejoice always! Pray constantly. Give thanks in everything, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Every day we need to turn our boredom into rejoicing, our frustrations into prayer, and our complaining into thankfulness. Even though our circumstances might be the same, when we do these things our attitudes and outlooks will surely change. I can rejoice every day simply because God is good and He loves me even on my worst days. His feelings for me don’t change like the ocean’s tides. Instead He is constantly happy that I am His child and He wants the best for me. When we are frustrated or stressed, God wants us to express these emotions to Him in prayer. In exchange, God will bless us with a peace that only He can give (Philippians 4:6-7). Finally, instead of focusing on what is wrong with our lives, God invites us to be thankful for what is right. Think about the things that God gave you that make you happy. Before you know it, you might just find yourself actually enjoying life again. Even though life can feel flat, God is ready and waiting to fill our hearts with life. I'm living the dream with my wife, Kelli, and 2 kids, Maddyx and Merritt. I love to skate and surf, but don't get to do it nearly enough. I believe that the greatest adventure in life is following Jesus. http://ridenature.com/

Philippians 4: 4-7 After an awesome break at home with all of my family for Christmas, I arrived in California just before midnight on New Year ’s Eve. At the start of 2015 I was busy getting ready for the first contest of the year in Huntington Beach, CA. I was also planning out which contests I can go to in 2015, and working to raise funds to get to all the of these events. On top of that I am enrolled in school online through Liberty University, so I have been figuring out how I can pay for classes in addition to all of my travel. Amongst all of my planning, fundraising, traveling, surfing, training, and schooling my mind starts spinning and I started to grow anxious due to the uncertainty of the coming year. One morning, as I was reading and praying, I was comforted by the writings of Paul in Philippians 4: 4-7 “Rejoice in the Lord always again I will say, rejoice! Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” I was reminded to stop and praise God. Rather than trying to figure all of my life out on my own, I choose to submit it to the Lord praying and surrendering my plans to Him alone. And it is only when I do this that I have peace. I challenge you to do the same, stop trying to figure it out on your own, turn to Christ and let him give you peace. Peace Out. Nate
Is it Relevant??? Deconstructing Me-First Faith It's so easy to live a life that revolves solely around a single agenda: our own. Everything in the surrounding culture encourages us to create the life that we want, to see the fulfillment of our own goals as the ultimate prize, to stand apart from the crowd by being truly selfish. Of course, Christianity suggests otherwise. It tells us that meeting our own desires is not the path to godly success. Jesus quotes rom the ancients in Deuteronomy and Leviticus when He reminds His audience precisely what we ought to value most: to love God with all of our energy and passion, and to love others as much as ourselves. Selfless living does not mean placing others on an equal footing with ourselves, handing out the compassion in step with the self-indulgence. True Christianity—to be near the kingdom of God, to understand the very fibers that hold together the essence of Christianity, to put our faith into bold practice—means handing over our own agendas in place of serving God and others. It might not be sexy or culturally on-message, but it’s there, in plain and simple truth. This devotion is adapted from an article in RELEVANT magazine
The Savior Self Sometimes the days become war. They blindside us with unrelenting blows from the mundane corners of everyday life. There is too much to do, too many fronts to defend, too many fires to put out. So what deceives us into traveling the days as though we have strength enough to be the savior of our own lives? Do we conclude (quietly, secretly, where even our own thoughts can barely hear) that since God is doing nothing, then we must somehow make a way for ourselves? Too often, we miss Jesus. Striving the way we do always makes the distance between us and Him ache with inconsolable longing. But it doesn’t have to be so! He is there with us He remains still. Patient. Waiting. Being God. Of the pressures and distractions and decisions we must face each day, there is (it seems) no end. But there is only one decision that truly matters. And that is the decision to cling close to Jesus, to hang trembling to his garments, whatever battle-lines form against us at our backs. Choosing not to fight in our own strength, but to believe, and to rest. Read more at http://www.relevantmagazine.com
Why Blank? Like a surfboard, we all begin as a raw blank; scuffed up, yellowed and not so pretty. God works in us to shape us for His glory and according to His plan. We don’t know exactly what our final shape will look like, but He is the master shaper and we have to trust in his plan. You may want to be a big wave gun and he may be shaping you into a fish. Why a fish? He has a plan to use you when a wider outline, slightly thicker rail and fuller tail is needed. How well will you work, for His glory, if your outline is for Pipe and you are surfing Ocean Ave.? In this shaping bay, we will never be glassed. The Master Shaper is never finished with us.
