Sustainable Surf is a California-based non-profit charity organization founded by social entrepreneurs located in the heart of the Southern CA surfing industry .
Our Mission: Be the catalyst that transforms surf culture and industry into a powerful community that protects the ocean playground. We believe that surfing can become the premier showcase of people and businesses working together to solve environmental problems while having fun.
Our Strategy: We take an integrated “systems thinking” approach with our innovative programs and campaigns, which engage both individuals and businesses together in partnership to solve the most pressing environmental issues facing our oceans, caused most significantly by the impacts of climate change. • Engage Individuals: Provide engaging on-ramps for individuals to make lifestyle choices that can lower their impacts on the ocean and coastal environment. For example, purchasing an “ecoboard” surfboard which has 40% lower lifecycle CO2 emissions, or recycling waste styrofoam packing into new surfboards. • Engage Industry: Help surf related businesses and organizations to improve their environmental performance and communicate their efforts to surfers more effectively. For example, Deep Blue Surfing provides a clear roadmap to make surf contests more sustainable and provides a platform for contest organizers to communicate their sustainability actions with credibility.
Program Goals: Our programs are designed to produce multiple benefits (environmental, social, and economic), with a specific focus on addressing environmental impacts that threaten “surfing habitat” (e.g. ocean acidification and sea level rise). The world’s leading scientific organizations have issued warnings that coral reefs and coastal environments are under dire threat from climate change. These environments must remain intact for the sport and culture of surfing to thrive (as well as the rest of humanity).

If our eyes are up and not on ourselves, our blind spots will become even more visible. Where are your eyes? Here on the mission field it is easy to be distracted by the work we have before us, and the people we serve. It’s easy to ask God to give us strength through the day to be extra hands to the people here who are in need. It’s easy to ask God to guide us through our ministry at church, but it’s even easier to forget to ask God to guide us through our first ministry. Our first ministry is in our homes, our jobs, and where ever we come into contact with people. From the time you wake up to the time you lay your head down for the night, your ministry is happening. I have forgotten this. I have been too busy wishing the people I live with would change, or nit picking almost everything they do and say. I seem to have been blinded by what they are blinded to, and vice versa. We all have blind spots. Why is it so easy to see other peoples? When it comes to seeing other peoples blind spots, He has extended His grace to us, how could I withhold it from anyone else? An exhortation was in order tonight. It hit hard and it hurt. Where are you eyes? The problem we’re all having is that we don’t see beyond ourselves. We don’t even attempt to look beyond ourselves. We may have all the best intentions, but we will see that persons imperfections and begin to be annoyed that they don’t do things the way we do them, and they don’t say the things we would say. Look to the most perfect of all, the wisest of all, the most loving and loyal; look to Jesus, our perfect example, our saviour. If our eyes are fixed on the heavens our ministries will surely flourish. Not to say we will never be annoyed with people, or we will never think about ourselves above others, but we will have peace, and wisdom. Where our eyes are fixed there our hearts will be also. What better place for our hearts to be but in the heavens with our Saviour? Ultimately what we need to remember is that the battle should not be amongst us, the battle is spiritual. The attack of the enemy is to cause us to hold knives to each others throats, and lose our wits with each other. “For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. Looking up at the sky tonight, it seems to be more beautiful than ever. The stars are spaced so beautifully and shine so brilliant. They twinkle and seem to sing, “We’re beautiful to draw your eyes to us, gaze into the heavens and be glad!” The Lord gave us a sky that is beautiful. Look at the sky and get lost in it’s beauty, it’s physical beauty, and the beauty of the Lord that it conceals . By Olivia Barrett

A Sea Of Plastic New study estimates there are 270,000 tons of plastic on the ocean's surface BY JEFF MULL An Indonesian beach exemplifies the ocean’s growing trash problem. Photo: Childs According to new research, there are an estimated 270,000 tons of plastic floating on the ocean’s surface, which are most likely broken into more than 5 trillion pieces. In comparison, in 2013, it was estimated that around three tons of trash were collected in beach cleanups in San Diego County. Long story short, there’s a lot of floating plastic in our oceans. This latest study was published in the scientific journal PLOS ONE. To come up with their findings, the author of the study, Markus Eriksen, along with other researchers, dragged fine mesh nets across various spots along the ocean’s surface and used a team of spotters on boats to count trash. From there, they used an algorithm to estimate floating plastic in other parts of the ocean before performing the calculations that forged the base of the study. The study did not account for plastic that was submerged. While coming up with an exact number for the amount of floating trash is nearly impossible, the results of this latest study mirror similar findings from a team of Spanish researchers who used a different form of methodology, which helped to validate the recent findings. “It’s encouraging that two different approaches came up with such similar answers, given how difficult it is to measure plastic in the ocean,” said Kara Lavender Law of the Sea Education Association. Kyle Thiermann, professional surfer and environmental advocate, outlined the perils of the ocean’s growing trash problem. “It’s definitely an issue, but there are a lot of things that every one of us can do to help. On a personal level, I’d encourage everyone to count how many plastic coffee cups and water bottles they go through every week. From there, I think a lot of people will be surprised and will want to switch to just using their own mug. The second thing that people can do is to support the organizations that are trying to solve these big environmental problems. It’s not about being the ‘no-impact guy.’ It’s about building habits that help protect the places we play.”

Name: Ed Angulo Label: Angulo Hawaii Currently living: Sebastian, FL How many years did you shape on the North Shore: about 15 years How many years did you shape on Maui: moved to Maui in 86 and shaped there till we moved to Florida in the summer of 2014 You have been referred to as a craftsman, how do you differentiate a craftsman from a shaper: I consider myself a shaper/designer. I've always been excited to use the board. Sort of like someone who designs a car and can't wait to drive it. The shaping part is a means to an end. I enjoy it, but want to finish it and get it in the water. You shape surfboards, paddle boards and windsurf boards, do you see a cross over in the designs or is your approach different for each one: The intended use and rider requirements dictate what design components I need to incorporate into a specific board. I am very thankful that I have gotten to explore so many forms of riding waves and enjoying water. Oceans, rivers, lakes; variety of venues and crafts have provided me a plethora of experiences as well as design ideas and lessons. Favorite surf spot, from around the word: This is a hard one because I've been blessed to surf some great places. I'm gonna say my favorite spot is the one that I'm riding at a given time. Anytime I get to surf it's awesome. I don't go every day, like when I was young, but I really think I love it and appreciate it more now than ever. What model and size board are your currently riding: I pretty much just stand up paddle now and have boards for different conditions in sizes ranging from 7'10"-12'6" Favorite surf destination: I really want to get back to Cape Verde in Africa. Some beautiful and uncrowded point breaks. Your sons are windsurf champions, do they shape also: my oldest son Mark is a board builder. He's quite good. It's fun to share ideas with him. He keeps me from just being a crusty old school codger. Who has influenced your shaping the most: So many, it really would take me an hour and pages to list them all. However, Bill Stonebraker gave me my first real shot in Hawaii. He taught me a lot about board building but even more about life. He's now the Senior Pastor at Calvary Chapel in Honolulu. Famous clients: One of my favorite shaping experiences was building a board for Woody Brown. He was 86 years young and spent hours in my shaping room telling me stories of his youth and surfing. One of the best ones was about when they first applied fins to their boards. He said it was the "biggest breakthrough " up to that time. He said prior to fins, they were always "sliding ass" on big days. Can you imagine trying to ride an 80 pound plank of wood with no fin? Most exotic location you have traveled to: Well Asia and Indonesia are wonderful and have had great surf and memorable times. But shaping in the middle of Paris in a glass shaping room and always feeling like we were on a movie set was pretty outrageous. You are a big Dodgers baseball fan, how will they do this year: I've been a Dodger blue bleeding fan since my mother turned on the World Series game in 1959. Went to the 65 World Series, sat in the last row in the left field bleachers and thought I was in heaven. Been 27 years since our last WS Championship. This year and the next several years will be great I expect one or more rings in the next 4 years. Custom orders: Facebook @ https://www.facebook.com/ed.angulo, E-Mail @ angulo@maui.net, Call cell @ 808-357-0481 Jesus is: The Way, The Truth, and Life. He says He is the Only way to God The Father. I'm always amazed that people and other religions are OK with having Him be a good prophet, example, good teacher, etc, but are offended that He IS the ONLY way to salvation. Here's the real deal. Jesus is either who He says He is, or He was a complete lunatic. Jesus says that He is not willing that any should perish but rather come to the saving knowledge that He is! Mahalo and Much Aloha to Ya'll
“ IF YOU FE E L TO O MU CH ” BY JA MIE TWOR KOWSK I – BOOK RE LE ASE In 2006 Jamie Tworkowski wrote a story called “To Write Love on Her Arms” about helping a friend through her struggle with drug addiction, depression, and self-injury. The piece was so hauntingly beautiful that it quickly went viral, giving birth to a nonprofit organization of the same name. Nine years later, To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA) is an internationally-recognized leader in suicide prevention and a source of hope, encouragement, and resources for people worldwide. Jamie’s words have been shared hundreds of thousands of times online. They’ve shown up on T-shirts and posters and even tattoos. Now, for the first time, Jamie’s writing is available in the form of a book. If You Feel Too Much is a celebration of hope, wonder, and what it means to be human. From personal stories of struggling on days most people celebrate to offering words of strength and encouragement in moments of loss, the essays in this book invite readers to believe that it’s okay to admit to pain and it’s okay to ask for help. If You Feel Too Much is an important book from one of this generation’s most important voices. Review “Since meeting Jamie, I’ve heard countless stories from people who were hurting, lonely, confused, and even suicidal who were able to find a toehold in his words. They love him because he accepted them as they were, told them they didn’t have to act, and let them know their story contributed to the beauty.” - from the foreword by Donald Miller, New York Times bestselling author of Blue Like Jazz

In early 2014, Channel Islands launched a consumerfacing web-based version of the same software they use to design their surfboards, Shape3D. The advent of “The Board Builder” marked a huge evolutionary moment in surfboards, as surfers became enabled to design their own custom surfboards right on the Channel Islands Website, make ad- justments to every dimension, component, and visual aspect to a board. In the development of the new website, the limits of integration and customization were pushed into a next-level customization platform, adaptive to screen size. http://www.cisurfboards.com/board-builder
Who We Are FLOW is open to everyone; men, women, youth, boys, girls and families who desire to share God’s love through their actions towards surfers. We are an outreach where we care for surfers at the beach, at surf contests and at special events. Although we do surf and have surfers involved you do not need to be a surfer to serve God. Please take a moment to pray for our group and see if you, or any of your friends or family, feel drawn into our mission field. If you have any questions feel free to approach any of the FLOW guys or gals at the events or e-mail us at flowsurfers@yahoo.com Monthly Events We meet each month, either in front of First Peak, at Sebastian Inlet State Park or at contest sites. We arrive at different times according to the tide or contest start times, we set up our tent and coolers and we serve those around us. We either help the contest get set up and broken down or we help beachgoers who are carrying arms full of chairs, umbrellas and coolers. In between we surf, pass out snacks or drinks and FLOW stuff. Afterwards, we gather for a devotion and discuss upcoming events and opportunities to serve others. Our devotions are very casual and for geared to first timers to Bible scholars. All are welcome to hear God’s word and ask questions like, “What does that have to do with me?”. Special Events We try and pack up the vans and see our local sites. The wave pool in Orlando is obviously a favorite as well as our Summer FLOW Jam where we jam as many kids into two vans and travel up coast and camp our way back home while surfing as many breaks a possible. There are lots of ways to be involved just come and see. We serve at National and Regional Contests: ASF Florida Contests, ASF Championships, NSSA Southeast Contests, NSSA East Coast Championships, Quiksilver King of the Peak, Gnarly Charley Surf Series, Walking on Water Tour, Rip Curl Grom Search…

Is it Relevant??? Jesse Carey is a contributing editor to RELEVANT and a mainstay on the weekly RELEVANT podcast. He's also a really funny guy, as evidenced by his Twitter account. We are in the new golden age of superheroes. Uniformed world-savers with strange powers and the ability to spout endless one-liners have taken over Hollywood, becoming inescapable fixtures of TV and the box office. One segment of the comic universe has been largely ignored, however, with Christian culture’s own brand of superhero being (mostly) shut out of all of the Hollywood fun. Thankfully, we’ve created this list, ranking the best crime (or this case demon) fighters Christian culture has to offer, mainly as an incentive for some hot shot producers to see what they’re missing out on. This definitive ranking has been created on a top secret, but ultimately flawless scale, measuring attributes like how sweet their uniforms are, superpowers, back story and how easy it was to find cool images of them on the Internet.
#5 Daredevil Matt Murdock’s (aka Daredevil) Catholicism is a big part of his identity, and is the reason he’s in the justice business to begin with. Though, we’ll readily admit that if it weren’t for Netflix’s great new series, our last memory of the underrated hero would have been Ben Affleck’s embarrassing feature film, placing him much lower on this list. #4 Armor Bearer Just look at this dude. In addition to having arguably the coolest looking uniform, Armor Bearer has supernatural access to “vast array of swords, shields and body armor.” A VAST ARRAY. #3 Captain America Though his religion has never been explicitly clear, Captain America’s character has always had Christian undertones. There was also this sick burn from The Avengers: “ I’d sit this one out Cap - I don’t see how I can mam - These guys come from legend, they are basically gods - There is only one God, and I’m pretty sure He doesn’t dress like that. “ #2 The Archangles The artwork from these cult-following supported comics about angelic heroes make them a standout. Bonus: They all have fantastic hair. #1 Faith Walker Faith Walker has a cool name, an awesome bow staff, and a short description that really tells you everything you need know: “street preacher, law-enforcer and urban hero.” Also, his graphic novels have sweet titles like "The Sin Assassins." Why Blank? Like a surfboard, we all begin as a raw blank; scuffed up, yellowed and not so pretty. God works in us to shape us for His glory and according to His plan. We don’t know exactly what our final shape will look like, but He is the master shaper and we have to trust in his plan. You may want to be a big wave gun and he may be shaping you into a fish. Why a fish? He has a plan to use you when a wider outline, slightly thicker rail and fuller tail is needed. How well will you work, for His glory, if your outline is for Pipe and you are surfing Ocean Ave.? In this shaping bay, we will never be glassed. The Master Shaper is never finished with us.
