As part of an in-depth look into the market for the first-ever State Of Surf report, we surveyed both Surfer and Surfing readers. We asked both titles’ digital audiences to weigh in on what they’ve recently purchased, where they most frequently shop, and what brands they are most likely to own in the near future when it comes to surfboards, boardshorts, wetsuits, and other gear essential to the core surfer. As part of our report, we looked specifically at the channels where surfers are purchasing gear most frequently. It’s no surprise that with the rise of e-commerce, online is a heavy destination for many, but the results from our survey show which products are dominating the space. Boards are predictably lower on the food chain when it comes to online sales, which could mainly be due to the amount of custom options and details at hand when making such a significant investment. About 40% of those surveyed indicated that they bought their last surfboard at a surf shop. On the demographics side, we asked a couple crucial questions in order to figure out just who makes up our surf audience. Some of the most revealing data we included in the full report was the following, which is a big statement to how committed our survey respondents are to their sport.

How often the average respondent surfs. Take a look for yourself: A little more than 5% of those we talked to surfed at least once a day, and a whopping 60% surf at least once per week, which makes sense considering a large amount—a little more than 50%—live five miles or less from their nearest break. This study was conducted by Transwold Business and you can see the study at http://business.transworld.net/tag/the-state-of-surf

JCJ = Jesus Center Joy "Jesus Center Joy" started when I used to go to a bible study that my siblings had started with Danny Cruden, who led the study. After he talked about how Jesus should be the center of our lives, I began to chant it in my head whenever I was afraid or nervous, and somehow it brought me peace. JCJ is what pushes me to my limits and helps give me the strength to do anything I put my mind to. It helps me remember that no matter what the situation is, if I have Jesus in the center of my life, I will find strength and happiness. This has gotten me through everything, from my toughest heats to all of the moments that make me feel more afraid than ever. Isaiah 40:29-31 "He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Even the youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint." This bible verse fits JCJ perfectly. It lets you know that if you trust in the Lord you will find strength to do the impossible and find joy in it all. Follow Coral on her blog at http://gromsforgod.blogspot.com/

“Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses. Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make. Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live! You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him. This is the key to your life. And if you love and obey the Lord , you will live long in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” Deuteronomy 30:19-20 Waves, yeah we had waves, good waves is another thing all together. But what we did have was a great time and great weather. Sunny skies with highs in the 70’s during the day and right around 68 at night, with clear skies and shooting stars. We were blessed with Nikki Viesins coming down to surf and share her beautiful voice with us. Nikki played her guitar and sang a half dozens songs for us Saturday night during dinner. We were fortunate enough to have an opportunity to feed everyone with baked ziti, meatballs and garlic bread along with tea and lemonade. After, Randy and Shawn shared the word straight from Deuteronomy 30: 19-20. Subject, we all have a choice to make and God cries out for us “oh, that you would choose life”. After we watched a recap video of out Summer Surf Jam and since the Pipe Masters was on hold due to small waves we watched the finals of the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach on the big screen. Night ended after a few hours of Man Hunt, some stories around the fire and a few to many s'mores. Looking forward to next years campout.

These terms describe elements of fin design that affect the way a surfboard will perform in the water. TOE: The angle of the fin (box) in relation to the center stringer is known as a fin's toe. Most side fins can be described as toe-in, meaning that the front of the fin is turned in closer to the stringer. Toe-in causes the water to pressure the outside of the fins, which in turn makes the board more responsive to rider input. CANT: The cant of a fin is the angle it makes in relation to the bottom of the surfboard. A fin that sticks straight up, perfectly perpendicular to the board's base contour, is said to have a no cant. Canted fins point outwards, toward the rails of the board. Increasing the fins' cant leads to a more responsive board through turns, while decreasing the cant (bringing it closer to 90°) makes the board faster, especially when traveling in a straight line. FOIL: Some fins are flat on one side and foiled on the other (usually side fins), while others are foiled on either side (single/center fins). The idea is to create lift under the surfboard and help propel it most effectively in different wave conditions. The more pronounced the foil, the more lift it will provide. Unfortunately, this also causes more drag on the board, which slows it down. RAKE: The rake measures how far back the fin curves in relation to its base. To find a fin's rake, imagine a flat line continuing out from the base of the fin; next imagine a line that extends from the back of the fin base to the very tip of the fin. The angle that these two lines form where they intersect at the back of the fin base is the rake. The smaller the angle, the farther back the fin tip reaches (a larger offset from the base). Fins with a small rake/large offset will propel the board faster and remain fairly stable, but there is a sacrifice in turnability. Fins with a large rake/small offset give the surfboard a tighter turning radius, but don't offer as much stability. FLEX: The flex or stiffness of a fin plays a big part in the way a surfboard will ultimately handle on the water. If you are a beginner, stiff fins are more forgiving and will give you the stability you need, so you might start there. Their lack of flex makes it hard to make sharp turns, and the turns you do make will be wide and sweeping. However, a stiff fin has the tendency to revert quickly to its natural position, so the turns will be faster than with a flexy fin. Flexible fins add a level of feel to the board that is hard to match with their stiffer counterparts. They are slower to reach their maximum flex, meaning the board continues to respond to the rider's input throughout a turn. BASE LENGTH: This measures what is usually the widest point of the fin's outline – the base. The base length impacts the way that a board will turn and drive (accelerate through turns). A longer base provides more surface area to push against the water, so turns are stronger and drive is increased. However, the larger base doesn't permit the board to turn sharply, so if that's what you're after, go for a fin with a shorter base length. HEIGHT / DEPTH: The depth of a fin is basically how far it sticks into the water, measured from the bottom of the surfboard to the tallest point on the fin. Depth affects the way a board will grip the water through turns, and it determines how well the board remains stable. The taller the fin, the more hold it will have in the water, providing the rider more control. While shorter fins don't grip the water as well, they do allow the board to slide-out a little, which some surfers enjoy.

Outspoken Christian and rapper, Lecrae, says his ascent to the top of mainstream music charts like the Billboard 200 and being recognized with Grammy awards for his work has little to do with his talent and more to do with God's plan for his life. "I don't have [the talent or crossover appeal]," said Lecrae in a recent interview with Christian rap site Rapzilla about his friend Kendrick Lamar's criticallyacclaimed album "To Pimp A Butterfly". "I don't accredit any of this to just my capability or talent. I think God is doing something far beyond my comprehension. So I don't understand it. I don't try to make a science out of it," added the rapper whose latest album "Anomaly" became his first number one album on the Billboard 200 last summer. The rapper who is currently on "The Anomaly Tour" also talked about other "overtly Christian" artists he believes have the potential to break out in the mainstream music market. "There's guys who are way better than me," he said. "There's guys who are more talented and more disciplined than I am. But for whatever reason God is using it. But I hope that more guys are able to infiltrate culture and have unique platforms. My ambition is to create room for more artists to shine light in a dark world." Lecrae believes every artist on his Reach Records label like Trip Lee, Tedashii, KB and most notably Andy Mineo have the ability to crossover into the mainstream. Already, Mineo is making appearances on secular radio and internet shows such as Sirius XM's "Sway in the Morning" and MTV's "RapFix". In a February 2014 interview titled "Is Andy Mineo the Future of Rap?" hip-hop radio host Sway Calloway, praised Mineo for a standout freeform rap performance on MTV's "Rapfix". "The first time I officially met this young man was at RapFix," said Calloway in introducing Mineo. "It was the end of the year and we wanted to do a special episode, finale and bring by emcees that we respect and think that have talent. And we had maybe 15-20 emcees up there, but there were a few that stood out, a few that let their light shine, a few that were lyrical, that came ready that were there to impress. And [Andy Mineo] is one of [those] few emcees that came up and really impressed me, as well as the rest of the RapFix staff." And Mineo seems to be following the path into the mainstream carved out by Lecrae. He's even chosen to ditch the "Christian rapper" label in the same way Lecrae did and discussed the move in a March 2014 interview at the Leverage event at Park Slope Christian Tabernacle in Brooklyn, New York. "For me, it's been a growing process. Just thinking through how I see myself in the hip-hop industry and as a Christian and what does that look like. I wouldn't call myself a Christian rapper. [With the label] there's already this assumption that you're trying to engage people in hip-hop culture that Christian stuff is not relevant. It's not good," he said.

Mineo is currently opening for Lecrae on "The Anomaly Tour".

Is it Relevant??? Report: Selfies Now Kill More People Than Sharks A vicious monster is terrorizing humanity. What is this terrible evil that has unleashed its fury upon people around the globe? It is the selfie. According to a new report from Conde Nast traveler, this year, more people have died while attempting to take pictures of themselves on their mobile devices than have been killed in shark attacks. Dozens of people have died while snapping pictures of their faces in dangerous locations, while operating vehicles or, in some cases, trying to get a shot of themselves with a wild animal. TOP FOUR TAKE-AWAYS TO WORKING IN SKATEBOARDING SIMINAR 1.

Do the best work you can possibly do for any job, even if it’s at the bottom

of the food chain. Hard work is appreciated by everyone, and if you can show employers you’re willing to give your all to even the smallest of tasks, it demonstrates character. Working your way up is instrumental. Get in the industry any way you can: internships, social media, etc 2.

Being adaptable and having an open attitude will help in presenting your-

self as an asset to employers; these are two key personality traits that potential employers look for. Having an open and honest employee that is willing to admit when they don’t have all the knowledge, and work to gain that knowledge is invaluable. 3.

Even if you don’t have a clear idea of what you want to do, keep your drive and work ethic going, and take every opportunity. Half

of the panelists graduated with a four-year degree, and half of them didn’t. However, a common theme throughout all of their stories was the fact that for a while, they didn’t have direction. What they did have was the drive to succeed, and create something bigger than themselves. That drive is key to success. 4.

Be authentic, and have integrity. The panelists all agreed that building real relationships will get you much farther in the skate in-

dustry than name-dropping, or pretending. If you don’t have the chops to back it up, it’s probably better to avoid name dropping.

There Are Some Serious Biblical Undertones in the new X-Men movie, Apocalypse

There is a new trailer for the latest movie in the XMen franchise, Apocalypse. With references to Yahweh, (God), the Bible and the four horsemen of Revelation, it looks to be the most overtly religious of the series. The movie hits theaters on May 27. Read more at http://www.relevantmagazine.com

Who We Are FLOW is open to everyone; men, women, youth, boys, girls and families who desire to share God’s love through their actions towards surfers. We are an outreach where we care for surfers at the beach, at surf contests and at special events. Although we do surf and have surfers involved you do not need to be a surfer to serve God. Please take a moment to pray for our group and see if you, or any of your friends or family, feel drawn into our mission field. If you have any questions feel free to approach any of the FLOW guys or gals at the events or e-mail us at flowsurfers@yahoo.com

Monthly Events We meet each month at local surf event or contest sites. We arrive early and either help the contest get set up or we help beachgoers who are carrying arms full of chairs, umbrellas and coolers. In between we surf, pass out snacks or drinks and FLOW stuff. Afterwards, we gather for a devotion and discuss upcoming events and opportunities to serve others. Our devotions are very casual and are geared for first timers to Bible scholars. All are welcome to hear God’s word and ask questions like, “What does that have to do with me?”.

Special Events We try and pack up the vans and see our local sites. The wave pool in Orlando is obviously a favorite as well as our Summer FLOW Jam where we jam as many kids into two vans and travel up coast and camp our way back home while surfing as many breaks a possible. There are lots of ways to be involved just come and see.

We serve at National and Regional Contests: ASF Florida Contests, ASF Championships, NSSA Southeast Contests, NSSA East Coast Championships, Quiksilver King of the Peak, Gnarly Charley Surf Series, Walking on Water Movie Tours, Rip Curl Grom Search…

Why Blank? Like a surfboard, we all begin as a raw blank; scuffed up, yellowed and not so pretty. God works in us to shape us for His glory and according to His plan. We don’t know exactly what our final shape will look like, but He is the master shaper and we have to trust in his plan. You may want to be a big wave gun and he may be shaping you into a fish. Why a fish? He has a plan to use you when a wider outline, slightly thicker rail and fuller tail is needed. How well will you work, for His glory, if your outline is for Pipe and you are surfing Ocean Ave.? In this shaping bay, we will never be glassed. The Master Shaper is never finished with us.
