Reinvention It always amazes me how an accidental or chance encounter can change the course of our lives, completely redirect us and open up new worlds of possibilities. Our paths are not always straight and might not always lead us to where we thought we were heading, but it’s here, where paths cross, that these pivotal moments are created. We keep following some paths because they are familiar and others we stumble upon without any conscious effort, life, after all, is full of turning points. Depending on which way we turn new perspectives will come into view and we only know which way to turn once we are aware of which way we are facing. When doubt overpowers hope, which can often happen, the time spent without hope is time taken away from the pursuit of another path. Sometimes we turn back and sometimes we fearlessly march forward. So here I am, at another pivotal moment, my first issue as editor. A gift of an unexpected opportunity which gives me the chance of a new direction and the possibility for reinvention. Reinvention is the inspiration for this issue of FM. We showcase this seasons trends while also exploring alternative styles. Architect, stylist and blogger, Claire, together with blogger and stylist, Sandro, (two thirds of The Clouded Revolution) take a new perspective on black and show us how to combine it for Fashion and

STYLE

DO UP YOUR DENIM What if I told you that you could wear jeans every day of the week without looking like a boring, bygone mom with no style. Would that twist your arm enough to pull all of that deserted denim back out of your wardrobe? Turns out, it’s one of the most versatile materials out there. Since Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss invented the stuff back in 1873, denim has quickly become one of the most popular fabrics in the world. We see it in summer and in winter; in what we wear and even in what we decorate with. And just like all those other 90’s trends that are now resurfacing, so is denim chic.So if you’re into looking CAF and feeling totally comfortable, then these tips are just for you!

by Sacha Kinser

Denim Swimsuit

Dress over Denim

Speaking of flexibility, denim makes for a great swimsuit. Which is why everyone is hitting the beach in denim these days. Now it may be a little late in the year for swimsuit shopping, but at the rate our weather is going in Malta, one should never pass up the opportunity to snag a hot new denim bikini.

I won’t lie, the dress over jeans look is hard to pull off. But when executed properly, one can really turn heads. However, once again, no one has nailed it quite like Man Repeller.

Photo via Blush & Noise

Denim Jackets These aren’t new, true, but the patchwork on the back can be. Denim jackets give you the freedom to express your personality all over them. Patches can be found just about anywhere you go and you can even order them in the masses online. Whether you iron them on or sew them, the application process is always quite simple. If you need help with a needle and thread, just ask for assistance from the punk in closest proximity they do this all the time.

FM FM182 182-- 19

STYLE

Denim Skirts There are some incredibly cool ways to wear denim skirts. Tuck in a classic button down and pair with some Oxfords if you’re going somewhere. If you’re into a more laid back and weekend-ready look, well a soft graphic tee will do just the trick. Got Converse or Vans? Of course you do. Throw them on and your denim skirt is as good as styled.

Denim Sofa

Photo via Crafthubs

Your taste for interior decoration is very much influenced by your personal style. Every fashionista knows that her flat should match her fashion. So if your style is denim chic, then why not find a way to mix it into the interior of your home? Upholster your sofa with a soothing soft denim fabric. You will have so much fun mixing and matching pillows to go with it!

Denim Pillows Too lazy to upholster the sofa? Just get a few denim pillow shams. These throw pillows are the perfect way to subtly incorporate denim into your home interior. Different shades of denim go with just about anything and as we know from wearing the material so much, it is super comfortable to lounge around with.

Double Denim

Denim Shoes Photo via This is Julie

Denim Cut-offs The beauty of jeans is in the personalization. You can roll them up, slash them, cut them short, and then cut them even shorter. The limitations are endless. So when your favorite pair of jeans gets a stain or starts to rip, go ahead and turn those suckers into Daisy Dukes. Flashing that booty bump is all the rage right now.

20 - FM 182

Yea we wear denim on our feet now. This is the 21st century, okay. Denim’s durability makes it a great fabric for footwear, and these Chloe espadrilles could go to the club, the pub, or Sunday mass with Aunt Ġuża. Talk about flexibility.

If you have trusted me this far, you may even trust me enough to take denim to the next level. Are you cool enough to wear denim on denim? Bring a denim jacket out with you or throw on a cool denim button down over jeans. If it’s warm out, try that denim swimsuit top with some distressed Daisy Dukes or a strapless denim top with your jeans. As long as lighter shades go on top, a double denim look is foolproof. Whatever the weather may bring, there’s always a denim look to suit.

INKY CANVAS Dress up your walls in fashion’s most essential colour – black. Inky walls make for a great interior-cum-exhibition space, an interior design trend that our tired black wardrobes could definitely benefit from. Creative Direction: Claire Galea / The Clouded Revolution Photography: Sandro Rizzo / The Clouded Revolution

A long-standing favourite in most women’s wardrobes, black is steadily becoming a staple shade in interiors. With the onset of dustyhued velvets in blush and blue tones, as well as a revival of copper and gold in the design world, black walls have been pinpointed as the ulti mate blank canvas to host these wonderful items. Black walls are non-conformist, but also palatable to chromophobes and those seeking a calming aura. This moody hue has a way of drawing its dweller in, creating a perfect space for meditation, curiosity and luxury. “ Black walls are non-conformist, but also palatable to chromophobes and those seeking a calming aura.” A black wall instantly makes your room a conversation piece, by exhibiting your most curious items, like a bronze floor lamp or a floral armchair. The avid art collector will know that a deep-coloured wall is the perfect backdrop for colour-splashed art works.

22 - FM 182

Drawing inspiration from fashion’s layering techniques, you may choose to ‘layer’ black walls by offsetting black and grey tones on your sofa, carpet and floors, from dark to lighter shades. Metallic tones also work beautifully against this night-shaded canvas. Moving from black walls to LBDs, black has been a fuss-free foundation in the world of fashion. Black has been earmarked as the most figure-flattering colour as well as being the most prominent hue in many women’s wardrobe choices. I have always been partial to black pieces in my own wardrobe. I do, however, find that this choice of colour is oftentimes boring. An all-black outfit is generally worn in very basic shapes with no attention to detail given by the wearer at all. As perceived in this design trend, a dark-shaded wardrobe can easily be given an interesting twist by focusing on intricate accessories. A sculptural pair of boots or a metallic jacket will offer an immediate upgrade to your look, transforming you from wallflower to cinematic femme fatale.

Layer on shades of dusty pinks and elephant greys for a play on shade and contrasts. Personally, I opt for metallics as the main focal point in my all-black outfits, as well as paying close attention to the cut and texture of the pieces I wear. A statement jacket is also a key item I like to throw on when my outfit needs a little TLC. Draw inspiration from this far-fromboring interiors trend and shake things up in your home as well as your basic black wardrobe!

StyLE COUNCIL FM askes our Style Council to share their top 3 must haves for the season

Nicole

Its perfect shape compliments any outfit and the “piercing” gives the bag extra oomph.

Every winter I invest in a coat that becomes my best friend over the season and this year it’s no different. This Weekday coat is a great cover up and will go with anything.

I’m definitely a flats kind of girl and cannot stomach heels for longer than 20 minutes, so these beauties are a definite investment.

I’m not a big fan of the Puffer but I just love this Jacket!

The bigger the better! I just love Balenciaga

Carina

I like things that are a little quirky plus they are comfortable and practical.

Claire

This Acne shopper adds the right amount of zing to an otherwise simple, minimal and, more importantly, functional piece. 24 - FM 182

This fashion goddess is living proof that you can look superb while doing the most mundane things.

Not one winter goes by where I don’t purchase a pair of Chelsea boots. The fact that these are metallic and pointy to perfection probably means that this year will not be any different. Add these to any plain old outfit and you’ve totally turned your look into something special.

STYLE COUNCIL

There is nothing practical about a half-exposed shoe with kangaroo fur lining promising a 9-out-of-10 chance of eating the floor – which, by the rules of fashion, makes these loafers absolutely covetable.

Any rendition of sleepwear-as-outerwear, especially in a silky fabric, is awarded must-have status in my list. The combination of shine, white piping and rounded lapel exudes a luxurious fantasy.

Sandro

Not only does this pair of trousers tick the nightwear box, it also checks off the athleisure trend and my personal foray into wider bottoms. It’s high time I gave myself some leg room.

Kira

I like a coat with a difference. This coat ticks all my boxes, cool, cosy and comfortable.

Who doesn’t like a bit of leather?

I can really see myself strutting around in these babies, I’m not much of a heels las.

Luke

I love a long cardigan. It’s not always cold enough for a coat so this would be perfect.

I like to walk the line between smart and casual and I really don’t like shoes looking new, I’m not sure I haven’t braved the cropped trousers for winter as why, I just don’t. I love a vintage looking leather yet, so these just might work. and these boots are really cool.

FRIDAY

Today I am working from home, while juggling a baby on the side. Messy and long days, that’s what motherhood is all about. Tiring, but so rewarding. Perfectly shown in these pictures. As you can see, I didn’t even bother to stand up when ‘paparazzi”ccame in, to capture the notso-exciting outfit of the day #sorrybutnotsorry

My style, at the beginning of this week, is quite similar to that at the end of the week. More is never too much. More glitter, more textures, mixed in with more styles for (most importantly) more comfort. Say hello to my sparkly Friday look - business on top and comfy at the bottom. It’s time for a caffeine boost after finishing my articles. It’s the weekend after all!

TUESDAY

WEDNESDAY

Work and play in my leather pants with his shirt. His shirt is the star of the show - it works with every outfit, all year around, day and night. Everybody should own a white shirt (and a full time babysitter). If I wasn’t on duty tonight, I would have simply changed my espadrilles into heels and danced the night away..

Off duty dressing! For both of us :) I always try to avoid being too feminine, just because it doesn’t feel right on me. You won’t often find me all dressed & glammed up. However, on date night, I like to at least make the effort. This see-through top with high wasted skinny jeans, and a pair of sparkly heels is the look of the night. Ah, and those heels - I could walk in them for hours! What a bonus.

SATURDAY

SUNDAY

This Saturday, was a beautiful day - not too hot, not too cold so, perfect weather to bring out some good, old denim. Double denim, or triple even. I have a serious denim addiction. This outfit worked perfectly for running errands and checking out some new collections (and reflections).

unday stands for “Sunday best”. Today I took my box-fresh sneakers, a fun white tee, and combined them with dressier items like this bag and a blazer. Throw in khaki leggings for good measure, and bingo. A long stroll along the promenade was suddenly a lot more fun!

NOD

TO THE

90s

This season’s trends have given me a bout of 90’s nostalgia. My trip down memory lane has reminded me of what a great era the 90’s was. Not just because I was a teenager and sleep was optional, it was just a great decade to be young. The decade leading up to the millennium saw a lot of change, important 44 - FM 182

events that shaped our lives. Change happened politically, technologically and culturally. The 90’s is a decade of great significance, we saw the introduction of the world wide web and the birth of the information era, the cold war was over, the Berlin wall finally came down and Nelson Mandela set free. society worldwide. The 90’s was a smooth transition from the raging 80’s to a new world well on the way to a brighter future. For those of you too young to remember the 90’s, allow me to take you back a couple of decades;

“The decade leading up to the millennium saw a lot of change, important events that shaped our lives.” Up until the mid 90’s a landline was our only means of communication, no sms, whats app or messenger. Friendships were forged in person, we didn’t take selfies, a phone was a phone and a camera was a camera. We bought cassettes until CD’s were introduced in the late 90’s and we developed photos. We saw the introduction of cable TV and the onset of the MTV generation. We rocked out to Metallica and Rage Against The Machine. Nirvana and Pearl Jam took Grunge mainstream soon to be followed by Sound Garden. Madonna was still doing her thing and The Spice Girls were spreading

girl power and breaking records. Alanis Morissette was being ironic and Whitney was belting out her ballads. Sinead O’connor was making a statement and the Cranberries were climbing the charts. Gwen Stefani started her road to success as the lead singer for No Doubt and was making headlines for her fashion choices. Rap and Hip Hop were in full swing, 2Pac, Dr.Dre, Snoop Dog, Ice Cube and the Beastie Boys are a few that spring to mind. We can’t forget those one hit wonders like Ice Ice Baby, the cheesy Macarena (which went viral before viral existed), Babylon Zoo with Spaceman, Jump Around by House of Pain, Mmm Mmm Mmm by the Crash Test Dummies, Deee-Lite with groove is in the heart, Save tonight by Eagle Eye Cherry, What’s Up by the 4 Non Blondes and who can forget Baz Luhrmanns everybody’s free (To Wear Sunscreen). The list of iconic one hit wonders from the 90’s is endless! If you wanted to watch your favorite TV shows you had to be in front of the TV at the exact time it was starting, no

streaming or downloads. We had a weekly date with the gang of Beverley Hills 90210 and we hung out with Friends at Central Perk. Every woman wanted Jennifer Aniston’s hair cut or “The Rachel”. The X-files and Twin Peaks had us on the edge of the sofa. The Simpsons and Ren & Stimpy were the after school entertainment. Will Smith rose to stardom as the Fresh Prince and the Saved by The Bell crew were up to mischief. We loved Winona Ryder, she was not only one of the best actresses of the time but she was also a fashion icon. Drew Barrymore was as cute as a button and also on the best dressed list. Johnny Depp, Keanu Reeves and Leonardo De Caprio were the leading men.

as pale as possible. By 95 jeans were getting tighter, waist lines were getting lower and boot leg was the skinny of today. Crop tops, Baby doll and skater dresses, culottes, sky high platforms and the Scrunchy are all iconic fashion trends of the era.

Jody Foster gave the performance of

her life in Silence of the Lambs and Uma Therman made a name for herself in the cult classic Pulp Fiction. Ewan McGregor was shooting up in one of the most iconic films of the time, Train Spotting. The 90’s was the decade of the Supermodel. These curvy, super human, goddesses ruled the runways. Their faces graced the cover of every major magazine in the world. They booked huge campaigns and were paid phenomenal fees. Linda Evangelista said “we won’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day.” They were glamorous and interesting, they dated stars and always looked flawless. These women were in demand and everyone knew their name; Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Kate Moss and Helena Christianson. These super women are the most famous models to date. As teens in the early 90’s we lived in Doc Martens, both boys and girls alike. Biker Jackets, Plaid shirts, baggy oversized t-shirts, torn 501’S and converse were staples in our wardrobes. Grunge wasn’t just about the music it was also an influential fashion trend. Goth/Punk was quite big too; head to toe black (summer or winter), jet black hair, piercings, black framed sunglasses with coloured tinted lenses, creepers, chokers, velvet, dark lipstick, heavy eyeliner, gothic jewellery and chunky boots. We stayed out of the sun, our aim was to look

46 - FM 182

It was around 1995 when we started to see the growth of the Rave scene, a genre of House, Acid house and Techno. It was crazy and colourful, a time when going to a rave involved too much body glitter, coloured hair, colourful feather boas and Neon coloured clothes and accessories that lit up in the UV lights. It was skimpy and psychedelic and at times quite silly but everyone made an effort. A night out didn’t have to end at 4am, we partied till the early hours of the morning, there was no need for afterparties cause the parties never ended.

In 1999 I celebrated my 20th birthday, my teens and the 90’s had come to an end. What an all round truly remarkable decade. We were all relieved that dooms day predictions were false and the century ended on a high full of promise and anticipation for the new Millennium.

PUNK

PRETTY IN PUNK By Sacha Kinser

This year celebrates the 40 year anniversary of a time when Punk shook up the world. The days of punk at its most righteous have dwindled away, however the spirit of the movement lives on through music, fashion, and art. With a DIY ethic at its roots, it makes perfect sense that the style and approach have become immortal. Although today punk has reached mainstream status, not everyone is comfortable incorporating it into their day-to-day look. Just because Siouxsie Sioux could get away with her outrageous style, doesn’t mean we all can; at least not without proper training. Behold the pathway to being pretty in punk.

Just because you’re in a dress, doesn’t mean pretty shoes must match it. Don’t be afraid to rough it up and pair a set of boots with your dolled up ensemble. Though, if you prefer pretty boots, there are always those cute floral ones by Dr Marten’s.

Patches, pins, studs, and skin. The punks were notoriously clever with the way they added adornments to their garments, displaying their personalities, opinions and musical interests. Patches were sewn onto jackets while studs pierced through bags, shoes, and clothing - sometimes even through their own skin - making each piece they wore unique in itself. By defying style, they started one. These trend setters were also clever in finding new ways to show off their bare skin. Whether it was through fishnets, torn sleeves, or see-through lace, punk icons found a way to look rebellious and sexy. Think of Blondie - men wanted her and women wanted to be her.

PUNK

There’s one universal truth that I’ve learned throughout my years of playing dress-up (as a child as well as an adult) and that is - every girl loves tutus. Whether they wear them out or not, every single girl on this planet loves a good ole tutu. And believe me ladies, Betsey Johnson didn’t get her inspiration from Avril Lavigne. They were cool long before our time.

Whas an interesting history in itself, however, bondage pants and studded jackets gave the fabric a whole new meaning. Though there are delicate ways to wear the trend without wearing the entire reputation. Word has it, leather jackets with pins and patches are all the rage this season.

An all-black look can be punk, and it can also be a bit boring. Choosing an all black look covered in sequins, however, adds a nice bold lick of spunk. These decorative features add a retro feel to an otherwise boring little black dress. Paint on some dark purple or black lipstick for a strong punch and crash the cymbals with some loud, electric jewelry.

Lastly, the final touches on any girl’s get up - the hair and makeup. Punk was about rebellion and going against what is mainstream. Don’t be afraid to get a little daring. Hair grows out and makeup washes away. Try that black lipstick that you’ve been eying at Mac lately. Dior did it last Spring. Try that new hair color you’ve been imagining yourself in. Besides, once you find that perfect little black sequins dress, it will compliment absolutely anything!

INTERVIEW

Name: Theya Abela Age: Just turned 22 Favorite City: London Life moto: Live for yourself Favourite Film: Thirteen; a low-budget film released in 2009 which really made an impact on me during my teenage years. Music: This is a tough one… It actually depends on the mood and what I’m doing; but I have to say that the genre that takes me to an alternate world is Dark Jazz. Bands: I have two all-time favorite bands; Radiohead and Cocorosie. Style: My style is actually really simple; mostly black, minimal and plain as possible.

Favorite item of clothing or accessory: My Flourite necklace. I made it for myself a while back, it’s my protective stone. If you had one wish: Unlimited time for my unlimited curiosity. A bit about Theya: I am inspired by the world and everything around me; the pale moon hanging in the sky, the sounds of the ocean, random strangers and the emotions given off through their eyes. I am currently a student in Applied Sciences and I also work in a pharmaceutical company on an apprenticeship scheme as a quality control analyst. In my free time, I work on designing jewelry with precious stones and crystals. This gives me the opportunity to experiment with diverse patterns from wiring to using different metals. I create original one of a kind pieces. I started making jewelry last February, but got into much more detailed

designs a bit later. I had been searching for handmade jewelry for ages and rarely found anything I really liked so I decided to try and make my own. I really enjoyed the creative process and it all took off from there. A couple of months later a friend of mine, Gabrielle Fenech, a local fashion designer, was preparing to launch her collection ‘Pripyat’ at Malta Fashion Week 2016 and asked me if she could use my jewelry in her show. The response was really good and I set up the label Cryptocryzt to start promoting my work. I am currently working on some customer orders for Christmas and some new pieces for next season. It’s always exciting to see a piece coming to life from a simple sketch. I really want to travel more; experience the world through different cultures and look at the world from a different perspective. I want to meet beautiful, different people and maybe spend some time working abroad. Who knows what the future holds, that’s the thrill of it.

up up and away Blogger and self diagnosed hoarder, Nicole, is packing her bags and waving goodbye. She shares her packing woes. What makes the Cut?

oving out is always stressful; moving to a different country is even more of a challenge. What makes the cut and what gets left behind? After several years spent dreaming of exploring shores away from our dear little island, I finally plucked up the courage and took the plunge to move country this August. In my head, this played out like a longer version of packing for a holiday, but when I actually got down to moving, little did I know how big a part my wardrobe woes would play in all of this. On top of moving country, I was also moving house so whatever did not move with me had to move into storage. Unfortunately, I’m a self diagnosed hoarder and letting go is not one of my strong suits. What ensued was one month of wardrobe detox and inner struggles. I packed all the basics I own, together with my most comfortable clothing, but the real struggle was finding the right balance between weather-appropriate clothing and must-have seasonal pieces. Luckily, I had just celebrated my birthday a few days before I left and was bestowed several items by my fashionforward colleagues and friends – some of which made the journey, but some of which I sadly had to leave behind. I moved to Portugal in September and the climate is pretty similar to that back home, but back then I was probably a bit too eager to turn over a new leaf and associated the move with a cooler autumn. Upon arriving, the temperature continued to soar. I realised that I’d grossly under(or over-) estimated the weather and was not prepared for Summer 2.0. Instead of swimsuits and shorts, I’d packed trousers and blazers. Stowing your life away in two suitcases is definitely not a task to be taken lightly.

My advice to you is not to pack for practicality. Don’t be scared to pack your favourite statement pieces as they will be what ultimately make your everyday basics interesting. Invest in quality pieces that will withstand the wear and tear of many washes as you’ll be wearing them more often than usual, albeit in different ways. Don’t stick to one season of clothing, but rather mix and match. And make sure you bring all your essentials such as your trusty pairs of shorts, worn out T-shirts and comfortable lounge pants. No matter the weather, you can make pretty much anything work. Layering is the ultimate trick when the weather starts to get colder. You can always pick up inexpensive pieces to complement what you brought along or replace what you might have forgotten! Nicole makes up one third of The Clouded Revolution. BEAUTY

BEAUTY & MAKE UP This season, make up trends are extreme, from nude to the darkest of dark but remember it is all about balance. Here are our top make up trends, see what works for you.

The dark side Deep, dark, dramatic lips are the biggest make up trend this season. From dark reds and plumb to black. This look is no longer underground. Keep the rest of the look simple or you could end up looking like someone out of a horror story. Glowing Fresh healthy looking skin is fresher then ever, subtle iridescent glow is the way to go. Embrace a healthy peachy glow to warm up the colder days. It is time to shine with health and show off the lingering glow that all that vitamin D from the summer sun has bestowed.

Nude If you don’t’ think the dark lip is for you go Au Natural. A nude Lip or a touch of gloss, this trend is all about keeping things natural when it comes to your lips. Copper Lids When it comes to eye makeup trends, copper is the colour of the season. Copper makes a bold statement while surprisingly still looking quite natural. A little bit of shading without overdoing it, will add a touch of shimmer to a mostly natural look. This versatile look can take you from day to night so embrace your copper lids.

Smoking Hot A Smokey eye has always been a favorite with women who like a bit of mystery. I’ve seen far too many women take this look too far, where it ends up looking more like a black eye but when done properly this seductive look can look sexy and classy. The updated and revived Smokey eye will be turning a few heads this season. The Naked Eye Natural seems to be gaining popularity. This look pairs well with both a dark lip or a nude lip. Are you brave enough to deal with the naked eye? Natural Brows Cleanly unkempt brows are trending this season. Shaped but not filled and roughly combed with no brow liner. A low maintenance look that just requires the plucking of a few stray hairs keeping your natural arch. Thin is not in, fuller to thick brows are the way forward. Lash out Super long thick lashes could be all you need to look amazing. Keep a natural look but amp up the lashes or a soft eye with long lashes and a dark lip. Eye lash extensions save you lots of time and when done well look really natural.
