CHRISTMAS Present

We’ve all been there: nothing quite compares to that lovely, warm feeling that you get when you’re handed a present at Christmas. The wrapping paper, the ribbons, the excitement and then finally, what’s inside. However, despite the gift givers’ almost universally golden intentions, the fact is that sometimes they get it very, very wrong. How worse can it get then receiving a gift from someone who initially received the gift from someone else and is given away by the gift tag? ANNA MARIE GALEA speaks to three ‘glittery’ ladies about their best and worst Christmas present experiences. Remember, it’s not what’s in the box that counts…

10 - FM 184

CHRISTMAS

“Ironically, my best Christmas present ever was also my worst one. My boyfriend Jean and I were going through the first long-distance leg of our relationship when he was playing football in Slovakia and he surprised me with a very special holiday in Slovakia.

SARAH ZERAFA Model and Influencer

I was obviously already really happy that we were going to spend some time together but he pulled out all the stops and rented out a cottage for us in the Tatra mountains for two weeks. After two weeks of snowball fights and skiing, he surprised me again by telling me that he had also booked us a small trip to Vienna for us to spend Christmas there. The only problem was that the night before heading off I got a really bad case of food poisoning which obviously led to a nightmare of a holiday. At that point, all I kept thinking was I can’t wait to get home!”

“It’s really hard for me to pick one best and one worst present. No one thing springs to mind, however, when it comes to presents that I always like, I have to admit that my sisters really love to spoil me and get me a bunch of smaller gifts rather than just one big gift. It’s actually really sweet because they wrap all my presents separately in pretty wrapping paper and write little notes hinting at what’s inside. The gifts range from small things like cute stationery or socks to bags or jewellery. I really look forward to this each and every Christmas. When it comes to the worst Christmas presents I’ve ever received, I’d say that clothing which wasn’t to my taste and perfumes which I hated the smell of are at the top of the list. The thing is that when it comes to clothing and perfume, it can be really hard to get it right if you don’t know the person extremely well.”

CHRISTMAS

CHRISTABELLE BORG

Singer

I’ve always been a big fan of Christmas. Every year, I make it a point to spend a lot of time with my family and with my fiancé Jordan. We also love attending the Midnight Mass together. In my opinion, it is traditions that make Christmas so special; in fact, one thing I look forward to is the stocking my mum fills up with things we’ll need throughout the year like socks, make-up and costume jewellery. I also love the Secret Santa my friends and I organise every year. Like many others, I’ve received some great Christmas presents and some not so great ones. The worst one that comes to mind is a bag which had clearly been gifted to the person who gave it to me. It even had a tag wishing someone else a Merry Christmas! Oh, and another time I received a necklace with someone else’s initials… And it wasn’t even by mistake… Ultimately, one of the best things I’ve ever received for Christmas is not something material; having both my grandfathers together in the same room for Christmas one last time last year was a gift I will cherish forever.”

STYLE

Caroline Paris Stylist and winner of the 2013, 2015 and 2016 Malta Fashion Stylist Award

High-Waisted Trousers While I know that these aren’t everyone’s cup of tea and that they do not suit all body types, you can’t get away from the fact that there’s something really elegant about a tailored pair of high-waisted trousers. They really are an item of clothing which help those wearing the trousers have a complete look.

THAT WINTER FEELING

A Velvet Tuxedo Blazer There’s almost nothing better than a velvet blazer. I say almost because the only thing better would be a velvet tuxedo blazer. There’s something about velvet which screams unabashed luxury and decadence yet it also manages to make the wearer look elegant. If you manage to combine a tuxedo with velvet, than you’re basically onto the ultimate winning formula.

The Pointed Boot Forget the cute, round toe boot, the ultimate stylish number for this season is the pointed boot (the more pointy the better). In fact, the more your choice resembles a weapon, the better!

THREE MUST-HAVES With winter well and truly on our doorsteps, it might finally be time to pack away our linen shifts and bring out our cashmere coats. Of course, every wardrobe, no matter how packed, could still do with a bit of a polish and edit so as to create a more cohesive one. ANNA MARIE GALEA has recruited some of the best to give you their three winter season must-haves. So here go their fashion picks…

16 - FM 184

Kira Drury Head of Sales & Creative at Lovin Malta and fashion stylist

Trousers Suit trousers, like these by Joseph, are steadily replacing skinny jeans in my wardrobe. They’re great for work and teamed with the right pieces fab for evening too.

STYLE

Cropped Trousers I simply love how versatile this garment is and the cool factor it adds to each look. Get the right length, layer up, and you’re good to go.

Malcolm Gauci Stylist and winner of the 2017 Malta Fashion Stylist Award Retro Sportswear I’m currently obsessing over each retro-inspired sporty piece I come across. Opt for fleecy outerwear in popping hues and heavy patterns to embrace the real old-school style of dressing.

A Gucci Belt I know that it’s just a belt but designer belts such as the ones that Gucci are making at the moment can really pull an outfit together without much effort. Even though a belt might cost much more than an entire outfit, this luxury statement accessory will elevate your look at any time of the day. The classic black belt with the double gold G buckle is my favourite, but it’s up to you to discover the style that suits you the best. Bonus: It has amazing Instagram potential!

Coat Outerwear is my winter addiction and everybody knows I love a little faux fur, this Helmut Lang number is just perfect.

Knitwear A girl can never have too much knitwear. This season I plan to incorporate a lot more colour into my wardrobe, Tommy Hilfiger do winter colour so brilliantly.

FM 184 - 17

STYLE

Carina Camilleri Stylist and owner of Models M My must-haves vary from one month to the other because I have many, many must-haves which my bank account simply cannot handle.

Red Boots One item which has been on my mind is red boots. Red is not my colour, as in, I don’t love it as a colour, however, my mum did and she was utterly convinced that it really suited me. There is a vast variety of good red boots to choose from at the moment and I confess that my main dilemma is choosing between whether I should get a high heel or a sensible one. The thing is that sensible and I do not really go together and since I know that the probability is that the red boot trend will be shortlived, I am thinking about it. We’ll see.

A Burberry T-shirt This time of year is turning out to be hotter than it has been in the past and that’s in part why I have fallen in lust with this white Burberry t-shirt with blue gem brooch. I know that most people who know me will find this to be a huge surprise because I usually hate Burberry but I really love this t-shirt. I want to wear it this Christmas with my Gucci jeans for my friends’ festive party; I still need to decide which shoes to wear with it though.

A Balenciaga Coat This Balenciaga coat has my name written all over it. It’s quirky and mega cool but it’s also €2,000. At this rate, I need to rob a bank.

18 - FM 184

STYLE

Marisa Grima Stylist and Managing Director at Supernova Model Management

Velvet There are few things more opulent and sexier than velvet. Not only is it luxurious to the touch, but it’s also a really versatile fabric that you can wear in many different forms. To me it’s the biggest indication that winter has arrived.

Oversized Knitwear Did I mention that I love oversized clothing? Knitwear that you can snuggle into and be cosy in. How can people not wear lovely winter clothes? I see many people in winter freezing to death instead of wearing outerwear which is a pity given how many wonderful choices there are out there. Oversized knitwear is not only a must-have; it’s an investment! Oversized Coats OR better still, Oversized Checked Coats Winter is the perfect time for layering. One of the things I hate most about summer clothes is the fact that you cannot experiment much; however, winter gives me the perfect excuse to layer and play around with textures, colours and different materials to stave off the cold.

WINTER TRENDS

PULLING OFF A MULTITUDE OF FUN, COLOUR AND GLAMOUR 2017 / 2018 So, what’s new this season? Padding, protective lines and cosy knits came together on the catwalks, perhaps as a shelter from the doom and gloom of a world in crisis. But if trends are truly heading for more comfort, fashion is retaining its sense of fun, its colour and glamour, always with a sense of determination and self-assuredness. In short, this season it’s all about celebrating the individuality of style through the multitude of trends waiting to be worn. These are the trends worth noting…

22 - FM 184

TRENDS

SILVER Seen at so many shows this season, silver flirted with the conceptual, creating hybrids with padding and pleats, and providing a modern twist on classic quilted jackets which were posed simply on the shoulders.

Y/Project

FOLK Mixing, juxtaposing and stitching together what may first seem at odds, this season, the designers quenched their thirst for folk, mixing and matching unexpected pairings of prints, materials and tones. Chanel

FEATHERS A flurry of feathers for a touch of couture, the common denominator at Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen and Sonia Rykiel. White only, and soft, stylish and poised.

Comme des Garçons

Alexander McQueen Alexander McQueen

Balenciaga Gucci

Heading to the top of the trends list this season are total denim looks à la Brooke Shield circa 1984, ultra-luxury and impeccably tailored for maximum everyday elegance

PLASTIC CHIC

Calvin Klein

Emilio Pucci

Miu Miu

Something a little less ordinary for Fall/Winter 2017-2018 as the runways saw colour blocking coated in plastic. Re-worked rain coats at the highest end of the style scale, dreamt up by Raf Simons at Calvin Klein, Miuccia Prada at Miu Miu and Massimo Giorgetti at Emilio Pucci.

COSY KNITS It’s knitting but not as your grandmother knows it. A modern twist on the cosy classic where wool is broken down and reinterpreted in new and poetic ways, dabbling with fringing, sometimes stretched out or infused with a touch of Hygge, the Danish craze for comfort. Sonia Rykiel Loewe

Joseph

COLOURED FUR With technicoloured rainbows and bright bursts of colour, fur is not holding back this season. An antidote to winter blues seen at Miu Miu, Prada and Fendi.

Fendi Miu Miu

POLKA DOTS

Balenciaga

A simple but effective motif, polka dots are all over this season. Use and abuse on one condition: stick to black and white.

BLANKETS Padding was prevalent on this season’s catwalks, suggesting that style is giving way to comfort. Creating new proportions, blankets came in quilted piles, made from technical materials for ever new hybrid forms. Mulberry Junya Marant

Sonia Rykiel

Chanel

GALACTIC PRINTS From flying saucers to stars via the all-over astronaut prints at Chanel, fashion took flight for new frontiers with interplanetary inspirations. Think little 60s-style dresses, silver-studded denim and silk as light as zero gravity.

Isabel Marant Balenciaga Chloe

WORKING GIRL

SPORTSWEAR

From secretary to business woman, the new generation of white-collared women workers has arrived. They’re unwilling to reveal their true figure until their feet which are poised on brightly coloured stiletto heels.

Although padded jacket mania is starting to die out this winter, the fashion world is feeling more and more intrigued by sportswear. Think spiced-up ski jackets, rainbow tracksuits, retro gilets and cosy fleeces. Totally modern and no holds barred.

TURQUOISE Never so prevalent, Lucite green and turquoise tones are totally modern while respecting the rules of elegance. Worn as a full look, the burst of colour electrifies a wardrobe.

Alexander McQueen

SCARF PRINTS Florals, bandana prints and paisley channelled a hippy vibe as the prints played with conventions, flirting with kitsch on the border between bohemian and bourgeoisie.

Balenciaga

SHOULDER PADS

Jil Sander

Isabel Marant

For now, it seems square shoulders are here to stay. An exercise in style seen on strict, exaggerated suit jackets and coats in a quest to create new forms of elegance and movement to get further in a world in crisis and fight from the front in style.

Alexander McQueen Etro

SECOND SKIN

LAMÉ

Cosy materials in sand and camel tones with soft lines: sheepskins are the natural choice for next winter. Dynamic and athletic with an urban edge, with a wild version at Coach 1941, mountainesque at Hermès and hip hop at Marc Jacobs.

Sparkles, sequins in gold and silver shine brightly with a resolutely contemporary energy, reflecting a desire for a dazzling elegance, made even more magnificent when worn as a full look.

THINK PINK Next winter is in the pink with fringes and pearls. It’s a colour as refined as it is graphic for a new idea of evening wear.

For Fall/Winter 2017-2018, the designers have restyled puffer jackets to the extreme with oversized quilted padding and comfy, chic detailing to counter the sub-zero temperatures.

MUM ON THE RUN BY BIBICHE

Bibiche is a blogger and a stylist. She styles windows, models, strangers and of course, her babygirl, Lola Olivia. But what does she wear herself ? Let’s dive into the week & wardrobe of our Dutch girl, with a French name, who’s living her Mediterranean dream.

For details of the outfits go to www.b-biche.com Photos by Paul TGF www.paultgf.com

M 30 - FM 184

MONDAY Oh hello there, Monday, your girl is back and excited about this brand new week! A bit tired after a long, fun weekend, but Lola is at school, being a good girl and busy clapping, dancing, painting and having fun so I have some time for myself. As you can see, I start the outfit diary strong in this a-ma-zing coat. It’s an instant mood booster! What about my general closet considerations? ‘Will I be comfortable?’ and secondly, ‘Will I be able to strip down in case I’m feeling hot?’ Let’s see what the week will bring and which outfit goes best with it.

FASHION

TUESDAY Comfort is the key, always. Especially when working from home. When working from home, there is a 99% chance that I’m wearing a very cosy oversized sweater (my own or one of my bigger/better half), combined with my very old, uber comfy trousers that I have owned for a zillion years, and will never throw away. I think you can imagine what went through me, when I came eye to eye with this jumper, right? Heaven! Drool. The sleeves match the pattern of my 70’s swankers perfectly! I’m so glad I never let go of them. Nor shall I let go of my cup of nettle tea, for that matter. Love!

T

WEDNESDAY My personal school run style is sad. Well, what do you expect from a person that dresses according to her mood, and is never in the mood for anything, first thing in the morning? There you go, I’m not a morning person. I’m super spaced out and extremely slow. Lola is like me, so we make a great team. We are lucky though, as her school is literally a three-minute walk away which is why I don’t feel like making the effort and just run down in my track pants, followed by breakie/ coffee by the sea. Then, when back home and finally 100% awake - understanding who I am and what the day is going to be like - I dress accordingly. Today however, I saved you from the tracksuit visual, and ran down in this outfit. A basic look with a touch of colour.

T W THURDAY Ahhh Thursday, my favourite day. There’s nothing like a midweek date night. We always get the nanny very early so we skip her dinner, bath, bed routine everything, to make the most of our quality time. Today we went for a super meal in Valletta and a good glass of red wine. The pop of red in my outfit? That was added to brighten up the darkness in this look and also, it’s this season’s must-have colour! So, now I wonder, do you own any red pieces yet?

FRIDAY On the last day of the working week, I started working from home, so ‘I looked like Tuesday’. Read - fluffy sleeves, funky pants, holding a cup of tea and Yankee candle on. Catching up with e-mails and preparing a meeting for later. In the afternoon I had to say goodbye to my cosy knit and beloved trousers as I had to get out of my bubble and back to reality. It seemed like a good idea to wear my grey suit to meet the web designer, because somehow, when wearing this suit. I always feel more productive and proactive. Let’s gogogogo!

SATURDAY Hello weekend, we love you! Yep, these boots are made for walking. I mean chasing! Today was adventure day and we were enjoying a long walk on the rocks by the sea. It was quite fresh so I layered up, and since Lola is in the habit of wiping her hands/face on my legs, jeans seemed like the best idea. Double denim even! Tonight I have an event so then I will have to get out of this cozy outfit boohoo!

32 - FM 184

FASHION

S

SUNDAY Home alone! Lola is out, playing with her cousins, and I have the entire day to myself. So, the big question arises. Relaxing or productive time? Always a tough one but I choose both. I started a total closet clean-up, before collecting and packing up some of Lola’s least favourite toys, to donate to charity tomorrow. Poor thing? Hah! Think about the kids that don’t have any. Christmas is about giving back. Finally, I decided to give back some me time so a welldeserved coffee with friends seemed justified. Monday, bring it on!

ZOOMING IN As someone who made his way into the photography business independently and having been a photo inspector at iStockphoto, Kurt Paris now plans on exploring another side to the art – the nude form combined with fashion.

What do you remember about your first camera? My first camera was the Canon EOS 350D. This was an entry level canon dSLR. It was quite compact and basic, however image quality was great and it was perfect as a learning tool. I also used it to create most of my earlier portfolios on iStockphoto so it paid for itself many a time. What inspired you to go for photography? When I was younger I enjoyed taking photos, however the cost of equipment was something that stopped me getting into it. With the digital revolution, prices dropped drastically and more importantly, cameras became electronic gadgets which really appealed to my geeky side. Why did you decide to focus on fashion photography? I think the human body is the most beautiful thing in the world and if I could, I'd be shooting faces and bodies all day long. Fashion is an expression using the human body and the clothes being worn. My wife is a fashion stylist, so this also made me gravitate naturally towards fashion. Do you choose a location or does a location choose you? It's important to have a portfolio of locations and ideas in mind, however each shoot is different. Typically I match the location to the clothes being shot and the story/emotions the brand wants to portray. What is the best photo opportunity that you missed? Even for an obsessed photo buff like myself, carrying my 5D around becomes a bit impractical. Thankfully, nowadays, mirrorless cameras or premium compacts are really easy to carry with us all the time. These little cameras might not be the workhorse I'd pick for paid work, however they are perfect for when I am out and

about. You have much more creative control/quality than your mobile phone and you can easily transfer images to the phone via wi-fi. It's hard to pinpoint the best opportunity I've missed, however, in general, backstage at fashion shows is the easiest place to miss shots. Tight quarters, high excitement from the models and generally, a special form of controlled chaos means that you usually have only a few seconds to capture the shot. Future plans? This year, one of my hard choices was to stop all commercial work to allow me to focus exclusively on fashion and art, and I'm looking forward to working with some great brands and designers to create something special. I really enjoyed working on my latest exhibition – Solitude - and I will definitely be focusing more on fashion photography as an art. I also want to explore combining the nude form together with fashion. I do have a few ideas brewing. For anyone starting off in this line of work, what would you suggest as the ideal kit? If you plan on photography as your career, you typically have to be very versatile. In my opinion, when working on events, fashion shoots and a mix of other things, there is no better value for money, long term, than the new Canon EOS 5D mk4. It's built to take a certain degree of punishment, image quality is stellar and it has taken anything I've thrown at it so far in its stride. For more budgetconscious customers, the EOS 6D Mark II is also a solid choice. If you are looking to learn photography then really any dSLR will do. Even the baby EOS 1300D is way better than the EOS 350D that I started on. See Kurt's latest exhibition Solitude on www.kurtparis.com

GLAM-UP CHRISTMAS

YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE THIS

WITH 5 MAKE-UP IDEAS

Dyna is a make-up artist, fashion and beauty Youtuber. She uploads daily videos to her youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/xxxdynaxx

STEP 1 Apply eye-shadow in the same colour of glitter or darker

GLITTER EYES

STEP 2 Apply pressed glitter all over the eyeshadow with an accent brush

You say Christmas season, I say glitter. Glitter is the perfect way to spice up your make-up this festive season in two easy steps.

2

GLITTER LIPS Another fun way to apply glitter in your make-up is to smear it all over your lips. Pressed Glitter works best for this step, and it’s easier to work with, however, you can get good results with the combination of glitter primer and loose glitter

STEP 1 Apply liquid lipstick in the same colour of glitter or darker.

STEP 2 Apply pressed glitter on top with a lip brush.

MAKEUP

BLACK LIPS + METALLIC POP

3

STEP 1 Apply liquid lipstick in the same colour of glitter or darker.

STEP 2 Apply metallic lipstick or liquid lipstick on the very centre. Use something that doesn’t have much base colour otherwise it will turn into an ombre lip, which is not a bad look, which brings me to my next step.

Liquid Lipsticks are all the rage right now and have been for well over a year. Try this beautiful combination for a fun pop!

4

GLOSSY METALLIC LIPS This next lip combination follows a very similar vibe to #3 but with a slight difference, and different colour choices.

STEP 1 Over your liquid lipstick of choice apply cream highlighter on the very centre of the lips.

STEP 2 Apply clear gloss on top for a super shiny finish.

5

ROSE GOLD EYESHADOW Rose Gold is very in at the moment, and some would be very scared to try it out, but it turns out to be a very wearable eye-shadow look that goes with all eye colours.

STEP 1 Apply rose gold eye-shadow all over the lid and apply brown eyeshadow in your outer V area.

STEP 2 Pair with some bold liner and lashes and you’re good to go.

That’s it for this festive season’s make-up tips. Always remember that you can always experiment and remove it if you don’t like it, but even for those who don’t like to wear bold make-up, you can adopt these techniques with milder shades and feel confident with your new make-up looks ideal for the festive season!
