ISSUE 180

12 The girl from Texas It seems that Christmas comes earlier every year. It’s like you’re sitting at home, treating yourself to a spot of telly and wondering (lamenting, more likely) how summer has just rushed by. Then there’s a knock on the door, you get up to see who it is, and there’s Christmas on the doorstep, all sparkly and ready to party. We’re not grumbling of course. After all, whatever the scrooges say, Christmas is a magical time. Families come together for a hug, to exchange gifts and add a couple of inches to their waistline. What’s not to like about that? And, of course, when the Christmas tree goes into hibernation for 11 months and all the tinsel (and unwanted gifts) is packed away, it’s time for the January sales. And in much the same way that we love Christmas, we also appreciate a bargain. In our last issue for 2015, Helena Abela draws up a strategy for January sales. It’s a cunning plan which will help you stretch your disposable income further. In this issue of FM, we meet Molly Morrison. This model from Texas is the classic beauty and brains package because, apart from working the retro look to perfection, she has just completed her doctorate in physical therapy. If you still haven’t made up your mind on what to wear for Christmas and the New Year, help is at hand. We have come up with the kind of festive wardrobe that will turn heads. Blogger Bibiche Rath also chips in with tips on how to work the skinny scarf. And to complete your look, make-up artist and beauty vlogger Dyna gives you some beauty tips. Read on and enjoy.

The girl from Texas Model Molly Morrison gets physical. Literally so as she has just completed her doctorate in physical therapy.

Where did you grow up? I grew up in a small town outside of Dallas, Texas. It’s your typical Texas small town. Everyone knows everyone else, high school football rules, and there were two stoplights through the busiest part of town. Growing up we did things like back roading and going to pasture and bonfire parties to pass the time. I miss the relaxing, slow and comfortable pace of home, along with my family who still live there. You were also quite active in school. How good did you get? I was a cheerleader and on the B-team or junior varsity team with every other sport. I was well-rounded, even if not the best.

12 - FM Issue 180

LEDOM

Are you still good? I’m not much of an athlete, but I still love to do anything sporty outdoors. Hiking and surfing are my favourite. What was school like for you? And were there a lot of other models in class? No, there weren’t other models in my class. I hadn’t ever met anyone from anywhere who had ever done anything similar. School was fun, but left a lot to be desired I think. The level of education and teacher quality did not prepare me for college, and the culture of the town gave me limited insight into larger society. Yet it was still an exciting and carefree time. What was your first modelling job? I was spotted by an agent while shopping at the mall when I was 15. From there I began fashion modelling, but always put school first. Did you ever have any aspirations to be a model? Growing up, I was a tomboy and was more interested in exploring the outdoors than playing dress-up. I had never thought about modelling. Maybe that’s why I enjoy it so much now because modelling is like playing dress-up and pretending.

How did you juggle school, modelling and your relationships? I have just completed my doctorate in physical therapy and have spent almost all of my life studying. Juggling education, work, modelling, friendships and boyfriends was at times difficult. I tried my best to make school my top priority. Looking back, I don’t really know how I managed it all. I’m just glad I did. Do you go back to your hometown for any reunions? My closest and dearest friend is from my hometown. Some of my friends back home will always know me best. Why did you decide to study physical therapy? I went to graduate school in San Diego, California. Honestly, how I chose physical therapy isn’t very conventional. I wanted to go into fashion design and marketing and I got an art scholarship. My dad got a book of the best careers of the past 10 years and the foreseen future. He organised it by degree type and salary. He told me I had to pick a job from such and such page to such and such page. I flipped through and found physical therapy to be something I would like. Now, of course I’m so happy for my choice.

FM Issue 180 - 13

MODEL

Which do you find more fulfilling: modelling or physical therapy? Physical therapy, for sure. Modelling is a fun hobby for me. It’s a creative outlet, an artful expression, and has led me to make many creative and sweet friends.

The Pin-Up Look

Ideally, what would you like to be doing in the future? I don’t exactly know what the future looks like for me, but hopefully it’s full of love, art, beauty, tenderness, and success.

LOCATION: PALM SPRINGS, CALIFORNIA.

Who do you consider to be a positive role model? I consider a positive role model to be someone who is honest, lives for goodness and the betterment of themselves, other people, and world we live in in some way. Your Instagram feed shows that you’re quite in love with pin-up modelling. Why? I love the craft and allure of pin-up. I think what draws me to the image of pin-ups is the story of confidence, the voluptuous and sexy womanly look. They are classy icons of beauty to me.

Does this affect the kind of men you fancy? Yes, it probably does. I like a man to be gentleman who is thoughtful and strong at the same time. What do you do to get a guy’s attention? I don’t do anything in particular. I’m taken so I only try to get my man’s attention. It’s really important to laugh at his silly jokes and make him feel special. Sex appeal and how to attract the opposite sex is really something that I believe comes from within, and is something that does not take effort or thought. Attraction just is. What makes you feel sexy? The attention of one special man makes me feel sexy. I really enjoy my time alone as well. It really restores me from the busy and stressful events of the day. Sometimes I just need some quiet time to relax and find some calm by reading or taking a bubble bath. A man who is confident and respectful of that space and time really helps. FM

SALES

Wind in your sales January sales can be a battlefield. Helena Abela helps you survive.

A

s you polish off the last of the Christmas pudding and down the remaining dregs of mulled wine, an assignment awaits that requires the utmost cunning, strength and determination. And no, I’m not referring to sitting through the children’s rendition of Silent Night, while secretly wishing to watch Downton Abbey reruns. The task at hand falls on Boxing Day with the end of season sales. Surely hitting the shops post-Christmas with a wad of cash that was given to you by your grandparents is pretty enjoyable? Yes, but don’t be fooled because sales shopping requires strategy and careful decision-making. Sales shopping is the antithesis of Christmas Eve shopping. Contrary to your last minute stint of Christmas present purchases where shop assistants smile, fellow customers send well wishes to one and all, and shops look immaculate, Boxing Day is the polar opposite. Shops are completely reorganised into rows of trousers, skirts, shirts and not colour coded and merchandised into collections that you are previously accustomed to. Shop assistants are busy trying to keep some sort of order and instructed not to keep items on hold or call up another branch to check if they have more sizes. And you are on your own. No one will complement you on the coat you are trying on as they are too busy eyeing-up bargains or hovering close by to snatch said coat as soon as you put it down. At this point you are probably feeling flustered, unnoticed and quite frankly stressed by the whole experience. Don’t give up. Power through as this is a case of survival of the fittest. Here are some key points to bear in mind when out on the battlefield.

FM Issue 180 - 17

SALES

“Nothing is more frustrating than buying an item on one day to find it has been reduced by a further 50 per cent the next day.” Shopping in cyber space

Covering the basics

To ensure that you don’t get caught up in the buying frenzy, write down a list of things you need before braving the shops. This may seem like a tedious job but trust me, it’s a lifesaver. When you are standing in the middle of the mall looking wide eyed and frantic, that list will help you pick according to your needs rather than investing in tiny sequin tops and yet another black cardigan to complete the set of six already folded in your wardrobe. Also, it’s more rewarding to tick off the things you need, especially as they are discounted, enabling to splurge a little on the items that you would like to treat yourself to such as a cashmere jumper or statement evening dress that you would couldn’t justify at full price.

Choose your battlefield

It may be tempting to cover as much ground as possible on your allocated shopping day. Although your determination may be admirable, it can burn you out before you have even started. First of all, choose shopping destinations that you are familiar with. This will not only help jolt your mental wish list but will also save time from entering shops that you may not be interested in. If you are one of the keen beans that books an annual trip to Paris, London or Milan for this very purpose, list down the stores you would like to visit before setting off. This will help you to plan a route and also avoid unnecessary queues. Eliminate already affordable stores such as Primark or TK Maxx as sales shopping should be an opportunity to buy something aspirational. Think quality over quantity even though it may be difficult to hold back.

Stylish, sexy and with a perfect fit Charles & Ron Denim is another exciting new addition to the expanding Charles & Ron ready-to-wear collection. Available in three different lengths and washes exclusively at Charles & Ron, Valletta and Corinthia Palace Hotel & Spa, Attard.

18 - FM Issue 180

If a trip to London is not on the agenda, fear not because online shopping is the next best thing. Aside from not having to leave the comfort of your home and your pyjamas, it enables you to surf the web without the added stress of crowds or travel. Shop by size so you aren’t tempted to buy something that’s way too big or too small simply because it’s a good deal. It’s a great way to edit collections and more likely to find something that you actually suit and fit into. Although many brands charge extra to ship to Malta it is generally well worth the additional fee based on the time and money you are already saving. It is often the case that you would buy more than one item from a particular site. Also, chat to family and friends in case they are also keen to purchase a few items themselves – you can then split the postage costs.

Persistence is key

Nothing is more frustrating than buying an item on one day to find it has been reduced by a further 50 per cent the next day. It is often inevitable but there are ways around this conundrum. Sales generally start off with a 20 per cent discount on current stock, unless it is least season in which case it will probably already be slashed down to 50 per cent off. If there is only one size and colour of the desired item, then grab it while you can because you are obviously after a hot cake. However, if there is plenty of stock then hold out a little longer. After week one of sales season, shops are likely to reduce stock further and also add additional product to the discount section. Having said that, bags, jewellery and other small leather goods are generally the first to go as they are sizeless. As sizes are usually limited during sales then it is wise to grab the item you love straight away instead of waiting for further reductions.

Reward yourself

After a day shoving, I mean shopping, reward yourself on your thrifty purchases and stamina. If you were unable to find any great bargains on your first trip, don’t despair. Return mid-month once the sales phenomena has died down there are always one or two bargains to be found. FM

In search of fashion Online fashion can be a cluttered wardrobe. Duncan Bone helps you find your look.

From design and photography to fashion: what inspired you to add fashion to your portfolio? I think I can thank my sister for introducing me to the world of fashion, as we always had loads of fashion magazines around the house and fashion shows on television. This, combined with my interest in photography, led me to look into some of the great fashion photographers’ work which I had seen in these publications. Years later, while living in London, I collaborated and shot more fashion focused work, rather than concentrating solely on the advertising print and design work I had done in Malta. Other fashion projects followed, like working with fashion PR company Exposure, directing my film Anima for Louboutin’s exhibition at the Design Museum, and creating and designing Garage Magazine’s digital radio station during New York and Paris Fashion week. These projects led me to focus more on this industry. So when the opportunity came along to work with some great people and on something which pretty much combines all of my interests and experience, with the aim to create a new and better way to find your fashion items online, I couldn’t possibly say no. What, in your opinion, are the main frustrations of online shopping? Too much choice. We have entered an age in which we have an incredible amount of information available to us and not everyone is doing a great job of making sense of this for you, especially when it comes to online shopping. A large number of websites are designed by department, which means everyone wants a larger signpost so their department gets more visits and everyone in that company wants to be on top.

20 - FM Issue 180

BEW

As a result, we’ve ended up with websites that are cluttered with too many big buttons and smaller product images. This makes finding something you want a long hunt across multiple websites until you find something you like, in your size, style and budget and hopefully in stock. All of this takes a lot of time and effort, and this is what we want to change with Custom. How does Custom aim to make online shopping a better experience? To begin with, we are a search engine and not a retailer. With this in mind, the most important thing for us is to show you results that are relevant to you, not a product or brand we have a preference for. So far, we have over half a million products from over 4,000 brands and we catered for this by taking a very design-led approach and marrying it with a search engine written from the ground up specifically for online shopping. Design wise, we focused on a minimal magazine inspired look which allows prominence to the products you’re looking for and even larger images on product detail pages. Also, every search result is tailored to your gender, style, size and budget. The system learns the more you use it, increasing the relevance whenever you search on Custom, without having to choose the same details every single time. To make up for the absence of a physical location and a salesperson, online shopping has to provide a personalised experience. How does Custom achieve this? Custom also shows relevant blog posts and articles based on your profile and queries. We’re working on allowing you to add your own channels here as well, so if you follow certain fashion bloggers or celebrities you will get posts from them based on your current search. This means you will get ideas and inspiration from the sources that matter to you along with your search results. All of this, combined with your own Custom profile, makes for a very personal user experience and ends up feeling like a shop built just for you. Who is the team behind Custom? The founders are Max Madile, an ex-Google executive responsible for the launch of Google Chrome in Europe, and Robin Wong and Andy Weir who, like most of the founding members, Benoit Vinay (head of interactive) and Phil Howell (head of engineering), have worked on several major projects for Google throughout the years. I joined the team as creative partner over a year ago. What has gone into the development of Custom? To create the ultimate user experience, we had to focus on getting every aspect of this right. It’s easy to focus on just the tech and forget the design or vice versa. I believe we have managed to find the right balance here thanks to working with an incredibly experienced team. A lot of hours have gone into this and together we have created a product that looks good and really works. As creative director, I think we have the building blocks of something very strong and I’m very proud of what we have achieved so far. Apart from consolidating various brands on one site, does Custom also consolidate delivery? At the moment we’re focusing mainly on the search engine part of the business. We make sure you find what you need and then you finalise that transaction with the brand or retailer themselves through their own site.

“All of this, combined with your own Custom profile, makes for a very personal user experience and ends up feeling like a shop built just for you.” This takes care of issues like keeping stock, managing product returns and many other pain points which would be tricky for a new business to handle. Having said that, we’re already building a possible solution and we could have something in place sooner rather than later. Custom is in Beta stage. What added features will the full version include? Beta only indicates we just launched. Although there will never be a full or ‘final’ version as we’re constantly evolving, we’re currently already working on improving product suggestions for more relevant items and better understanding of search queries as well. These are some of the points we are actively always working on, but this is just the beginning. There are a number of exciting features on the table and we can’t wait to get them out there and keep pushing the boundaries of what can be done within this new and ever expanding online world. FM

Say sushi, but forget about ordering that yummy, sashimi dish. Forget it. Forget it all, for nine months. Including your skinny jeans. Also, your comfy, baggy jeans, which are no longer baggy. Forget half of your wardrobe basically, and good luck. Get creative or end up at the maternity section – no offense.

Work it Say hi to these stylish skinny scarves on my fat pregnant body. Say hi to my third trimester obsession that saved me from wearing maternity clothes. Relief! Feeling cool and confident really does make the pregnancy clock tick faster. Say hi to your new obsession – preggo or not – because besides the keeping-you-warm factor, a scarf also saves you buying statement pieces. It truly upgrades every boring top, accessorises every look, rescues every bad hair day, and replaces every belt. So, from Monday to Friday, from coffee dates to girls’ nights to Christmas parties, the scarf completes every look, at any time of day, on any type of body, anywhere in the world, every season.

light a

spark Dyna puts on a classic Christmas look.

C

hristmas is just around the corner and if you’re anything like me, then you’re stuck around the idea of what make-up to wear. Of course, because I am what I am, I typically go for the non-typical choices. So, how about a deep purple lip, some bright cranberry shadow, or drowning my face in a ton of glitter? Well, maybe not literally drowning my face in glitter, as that can get really messy, especially if you’ve ever experienced any glitter mishaps like my clumsy self. But today I bring to you a super glamorous, classic way to wear your make-up for Christmas Eve in easy step-by-step pictorials.

Step #1

Step #2

Step #3

Dust some translucent powder under your foundation. This may sound crazy, but if you tend to get oily skin, this will help your make-up stay put because it will absorb your natural oils and prevents your foundation from slipping and sliding. I used a big powder brush to apply this.

Apply foundation. Make sure it gives at least medium coverage, so it can give you a flawless base. Pat it over areas where you want fuller coverage and blend wherever you don’t really need it all that much. I like a buffing brush for this step, but you can use whatever you’re comfortable working with.

Fill in your eyebrows. You can use eyeshadow, brow powder, gel or pencil in the appropriate shade. This will help frame your face. I like to use an angled liner brush with eyebrow gel, as it helps give me a more precise application.

Step #4

Step #5

Apply a metallic or shimmery eyeshadow all over your eyelid, inner eye corner and inner lower lashline. Or bathe in it, if you wish. Or don’t. Whatever floats your goat. If you have a champagne or gold shade, all the better. But you can even go for silver if you wish. Concealer brushes work lovely for packing on eyeshadow all over the lid. Or use your fingers – that works fabulously too.

Apply a warm brown in the crease and lower lashline. Actually, I used a bronzer, but you can use an eyeshadow. Or use a bronzer because, you know, you only live once.

36 - FM Issue 180

YTUAEB

Step #6

Step #7

Step #8

Pat your concealer underneath your eyes. I applied the concealer now and not before because it can get messy with the eyeshadows, so it’s easier to clean up eyeshadow fallout rather than if I had applied it before the eyeshadow application.

Apply a bit of concealer underneath your brows. I like to use a cream concealer with a sharp brush. This will give you a brow lift and it will make you look like you just groomed your eyebrows. You can thank me later.

Apply your winged eyeliner. Make it a simple one. Take your time and don’t pressure yourself. Breathe slowly. If you have a problem with liquid eyeliners, gel eyeliners work amazingly and give you more control and less room for error.

Step #9

Step #10

Step #11

Apply a thin coat of mascara on the top and bottom lashes. You may wish to pack it on if you’re not familiar with false eyelashes. In that case, feel free to apply 10,000 coats of mascara. Comb through after each coat, as this will help them not look clumped up. And you may want to opt for three to four coats, as 10,000 might be a tad too much.

In case you stuck to the thin coat of mascara, you may want to opt for false eyelashes. The glamour that false eyelashes add is phenomenal. If you’re not comfortable wearing them, you can still opt for just mascara. And if you’re experimenting with false eyelashes for the first time on Christmas Eve just before going out, chances are you’re not going to manage, throw a tantrum and skip Christmas Eve all together. If it’s your first experience with false eyelashes, make sure you practise.

Now warm up your face with some bronzer. And if have the skill, go for contour and highlight. Scratch that. Don’t skip highlight. It will add so much glamour to the look. All you need to do is use a shimmery champagne highlighter or eyeshadow and apply it a bit on your cheekbones.

Step #12 And finally, red lips. You can’t go wrong with red. But you can go for any colour you’re comfortable wearing. Long-lasting lipstick or a lip lacquer is your very best friend to make sure it stays put and not slip and slide. And voila. You’re good to party – or not party – for Christmas Eve. A full video tutorial will be up on my Youtube channel if you’d like to see how I created the look step after step, as well as product list and recommendations. And until the next one, Happy Christmas.

LOUIS VUITTON

hey say that accessories make or break an outfit. This is especially true during the festive period, when what sets you apart against a palette of Christmas red and New Year black are the finishing touches. From sparkly heels and headdresses to mismatched earrings and elegant brooches, shine on.

LOUIS VUITTON

Keep your head up this festive season. Literally so because a lot of this season’s accessories go on top. Manish Arora lit up the catwalk with his bejewelled headdresses while Saint Laurent welcomed the return of wide brimmed fur-felt hats. Gucci reworked the classic beret, pairing it with a bow for added chic appeal.

Arm candy This season’s bags are all about the grip and wrist. Louis Vuitton’s bags are mostly top-handled trunks while Prada, Marc Jacobs and Christian Dior added a shoulder strap for an extra sling option.

ASHISH

Heels girls This season, it’s goodbye brogues and trainers and hello heels. For the past couple of years, flat shoes have reigned supreme. However, this season spells the end of their (admittedly comfortable) rule as heels marched all over New York, Paris, London and Rome. Yes, heels are pointy and can be uncomfortable – however, they’re totally sexy. Cue a catwalk featuring Ashish’s red patent lace-ups, Dior’s thigh highs, and the triangular Mary Janes at Prada. You’ll definitely make an entrance in these heels. Heels are also very glittery this season, featuring metal studs, sparkly block heels and latex boots so shiny and tight that they seem to have a life of their own.

TRENDS

GIVENCHY

This season, one necklace or a single pair of earrings don’t cut the mustard. Rather, you need to go totally overboard. At Vionnet, it was either a handful of necklaces or one, big heavy metal creation. Givenchy and Balenciaga took the same approach, with a greatest hits of dangles, studs and drops in one look. Also, earrings don’t need to match – JW Anderson’s mismatched earrings are daringly beautiful. Pearls, usually considered to be the quietly elegant option, are also louder this season. At Chanel and Stella McCartney, they were looped over sheer blouses and reworked as oversized headsets while at Dolce & Gabbana, they twinkled in elegant updos.

One off This season is all about more is, well, more. But if you still think that one piece is all it takes to complete your look, then invest in a singular item that will instantly elevate your look to high fashion. The Prada brooch, for instance, is an instant game-changer. Add it to any look and cameras start flashing. Chloe’s reworked Hudson bag is another high-end upgrade that will turn heads.

LAST WORD

A note on fashion My inspiration? Music, says designer Gaetano Busuttil. Photos: Benjamin Sant at Snapart Photography

You and fashion: how did the story start? Ever since I can remember, I’ve had an interest in fashion. Even when I was a kid, I was always sketching female silhouettes and clothes. Also, I have always looked up to fashion icons such as Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe. Cher was my main inspiration – I was always in awe at how she can reinvent herself over and over again and unfailingly come up with something new. How did your wardrobe look like when you were young? Let’s just say it was very colourful. And how does it look like now? My wardrobe now mainly consists of black shirts, drainpipes and suits. What inspired you to launch your own label? At the textiles shop where I used to work, they always pushed me to launch my own label and they really inspired me to do so. What are your main design inspirations? Music is my main inspiration. I listen to a song that I can relate to and create a collection inspired by that song. How important is the choice of fabric in your designs? Material is very important. The choice depends on the structure of the dress you’re working on. Personally, I tend to prefer stretch material. You won the New Fashion Designer award at this year’s Malta Fashion Awards. How important is this award for you? That award means everything to me. It gives me the strength to work harder and give my all in everything that I do. Sometimes I look at it and still can’t believe that I’ve won. Are you currently working on a new collection? My new collection was launched in November at Moda Malta. It is inspired by the freedom that a person has in choosing not to do what they are told. It’s about emancipation. In fact, the collection is called #Free and that’s how I want every woman who wears my creations to be. What are your favourite trends for AW/15? I like everything from bell-bottoms and drainpipes to ball gowns and fishtails. As long as it is artistic, it’s a favourite. What will you be wearing this season? I will be wearing a lot of black items, especially leather jackets. FM
