14 From catwalk to click It must be the bleaching sun, the frilly, limesnappy cocktails, or the bright rays that make every streetscape look like a dreamy Instagram shot. Summer makes everyone look more beautiful. But it’s not just summer – it’s also the season’s wardrobe that brings out the best in us, and nips and tucks those areas which we haven’t managed to address despite the winter-long slog at the gym. In this issue of FM, Kira Drury lines-up the best of summer fashion. From citrus splashes and blue shades to girly lace, stripes, ruffles, bows and the paper-bag waist, this season is certainly a colourful one. So flaunt it at the beach or in the evening during one of those champagne parties by the pool which we love so much. Summer means less work and more holidays. Fashion blogger Grazielle Camilleri prepares for a hot weekend abroad with a small yet dynamic wardrobe. She also has some handy tips on how to pack your luggage with the right essentials. While at the London Fashion Week, Helena Abela had time to take note of next season’s trends while pondering on the future of fashion. Consumers are no longer willing to wait for catwalk collections to become available – will this change the world of fashion as we know it? Beauty is, of course, top of our summer agenda. Beauty blogger Dyna helps you find the perfect foundation shade, focusing on undertone and level of darkness. She shares her tips for summer. In this issue of FM, we also meet blogger Sacha Kinser, get familiar with next season’s trends and trawl the streets for some urban style. Read on and enjoy.

t’s London Fashion Week, 2015. Kitted-out, head to toe in an array of statement designer clothes mixed with the hottest high-street styles, the fash pack are out on the town and ready to lap up the trends for the upcoming season. Before the first stiletto-heeled foot could even step onto the runway, press, stylists, bloggers and buyers seated at the front row were whipped into a frenzy. As phones buzzed with the latest headline news from the popular online site Business of Fashion, the British Fashion Council Tent, where Fashion Week is held in the centre of Soho, was consumed by a loud murmur that filled the venue. Aside from tracksuit bottoms becoming the new choice of front row uniform, all due to the rainbow, print, athleisure, trousers that graced the SS15 Chloe runway, the question at hand was triggered by announcements from Burberry, Michael Kors and Tom Ford. These leading designer brands announced that they will no longer show collections six months in advance but will be selling their collections straight off the catwalk. If widely adopted this would change the future of Fashion Week to accommodate a world that

“In true showmanship style, London Fashion Week continued regardless with an incredible array of collections” has become increasingly immediate. The ready-to-buy collection will be made available immediately, online and in store as opposed to having to wait six months until the product is available. Let’s go back a couple of decades, to a time when online shopping was not yet a commodity and Fashion Week was held behind closed doors, with only buyers and print press there to cover the evolving trends in their sketch pads and notebooks. Although today the front row is still lined with famous faces, these modern day celebrities have become influencers in their own right, bloggers rub shoulders with US Vogue Editor Anna Wintour and reality TV stars mix with actors and singers as they use social media such as Instagram, Twitter and Snap Chat to keep their fan base fully up to speed. It has become more evident that with the rise of social media, bloggers and the street style starlets have deviated the attention slightly from the catwalk to more pressing matters: What is the ‘it’ bag that everyone is wearing? Which party is Kendall Jenner attending? Is an extra hot, skinny, soya latte still the coffee of choice? Brands too have adopted the same strategy by live-streaming their shows and inviting the world to see. It is little wonder that the new generation brought up with the internet find it hard to understand why they have to wait six months for these collections to be available to purchase. Waiting lists are not something they are accustomed to when they rely on ‘click throughs’ and next day delivery. It is for this reason that Burberry, Michael Kors and Tom Ford will no longer launch AW and SS collections but will instead call them February and September collections, a strategy that is set to kick off next season.

Panic stricken, I did for a minute think that my seasonal trend report would be limited to one paragraph but in true showmanship style, London Fashion Week continued regardless with an incredible array of collections. The Alexander McQueen label returned to London for one season only which heightened the excitement around the city considerably. As I walked into Lawrence Hall, where the show was set to take place, the energy was electric and the show did not fail to please. Romantic, dreamlike, creatures of the night made their way down the runway, dressed in caped gowns embellished with twinkling stars and moons – these featured heavily throughout the collection, contrasted with ruffled dresses in sheer and nude fabrics. Sarah Burton, creative director of Alexander McQueen, was not the only brand that made its return to the streets of London. Mulberry and shoe designer Sophia Webster also followed suit. The fantasy theme produced by Burton seemed to trigger a trend as Sophia Webster brought Beetlejuice to life. Known for her signature statement heels Webster’s AW16 collection ‘I Myself, Am Strange and Unusual’ played heavily on gothic romance produced in decadent textures and embellishment. In contrast Mulberry drew inspiration from reality, presenting a London punk and rock ‘n’ roll collection of navy, khaki and black highlighted by punches of colour in yellow, pink and blues in dense wools and silks embellished with silver chains and studs. London loyal, Topshop Unique, is always a star-studded event. Supermodels Karlie Kloss, Jordan Dunn and Lara Stone sat next to each other at the show which was also attended by Suki Waterhouse, Lottie Moss (Kate Moss’ younger sister) and Daisy Lowe. The collection presented a strong contrast, the proper girl versus the mischievous alter ego portrayed in a collection of velvet tuxedo onesies, fuchsia lace skirts and animal print. As London Fashion Week came to a close other trends that received nods of approval were double-breasted suits, as seen on at Paul Smith’s show, teamed with silk shirts and paisley prints. Christopher Kane presented a collection of heavy embellishment while mixing chunky knits with silk dresses. Erdem echoed Alexander McQueen with its collection of midnight dresses and tailoring heavily embellished with embroidery. Unfortunately you will have to wait six months to buy into these new trends. But who knows – maybe next season we will all be taking advantage of the ready-to-buy collections, credit card and mug of tea in hand while seated comfortably on your sofa, in your tracksuit trousers. Chloe tracksuit trousers of course! FM

he sun is out, the weather is warm, and the buses are full. Everywhere you look, tourists are lounging in the sun and sipping cocktails. It seems that the whole island is on holiday… except for you. You are stuck in an office, perhaps sliding your desk chair closer to the window in the hope that you don’t fall behind on your tan. You wake up in the morning, reaching for your bikini, wistfully longing for the beach, but you grab your work trousers instead, pull your hair back, and throw on some lipstick for good measure. Well you’ll be pleased to know that you’re not the only one. There are many others out there just like you. However, before you make a habit of this mundane lifestyle, why not find a way to add some life to your summer weeks? And what better way to celebrate summer in the office than with your refreshing new summer ensembles? It’s totally possible for the working girl to enjoy summer too – all it takes is some creativity, a little help from your wallet and five simple steps.
The white suit
The white suit is the coolest summer suit out there. It makes a bold statement and allows a platform for your favourite clutch to stand out among the rest. Give it a clean look with neutral beige or white pumps or else opt for contrasting black or red shoes for a loud splash of colour. Whatever the mood you’re in, the white suit will prove itself suitable.

The flat
Am I the only one who rolls my eyes at these women who take walks down the promenade in stilettos? There’s a time and a place ladies. The place for the nine-inch stiletto is Paceville and the place for chic flats is the office… and the promenade. Look sleek and saunter comfortably in a variety of office friendly flats this summer. Go for a flirty feminine look with ballet flats or lace-up pointed flats. For a sartorial masculine feel, try pairing your outfit with a pair of loafers or elect a casual pair of leather mules for a not-so-high-maintenance yet sophisticated swag. Get that edgy dose when your heart craves with a rockerchic pair of industrial flats like those we’ve been seeing by Alexander Wang and Karl Lagerfeld or slip on a comfortable pair of studded Birkenstocks. badlands-blog.com

The slip dress
I’ve always said that lingerie is too fun – and expensive – to restrict to the bedroom. Why not incorporate it into a smart ensemble for an elegantly daring outfit? Introducing, the slip dress! It’s light, it’s soft, it’s silky, and it’s sexy. It’s comfortable enough to feel like your PJ’s and it’s classy enough to wear to work. Just imagine stepping out of the shower on a hot summer morning and slipping into an easy breezy slip dress! You’ll be dying to jump out of bed and slip into this summery dream dress.

Ruffles are the ultimate way to add life to an outfit. They can be worn in so many different ways, from tops and trousers to dresses and skirts. You could completely cover yourself in ruffles and it would still look cool. Add a hint of ruffles for a feminine touch or throw in the whole shebang for an ultra girly look. Turn it up a notch with some big bell sleeves this season. Pair them with a smile and a hair-flip and your ensemble is complete.

Is it too early for you to sport the off-the-shoulder trend? Yes, it’s still a bit cold for me. But it will soon be summer. Wide or narrow, vertical, horizontal or diagonal, stripes are the next big thing. Do you see yourself in stripes? I would be curious to try out the diagonal stripes look proposed by Stella McCartney. Current essential wardrobe item? My flowered bomber jacket. What pair of shoes do you have on your wish list? Two-toned canvas espadrilles have been around a couple of seasons already yet I still have to get myself a pair.
Edmira Is it too early for you to sport the off-the-shoulder trend? It’s definitely time for it. Wide or narrow, vertical, horizontal or diagonal, stripes are the next big thing. Do you see yourself in stripes? Yes I quite like wearing striped shirts, especially to the office. Current essential wardrobe item? My straw panama hat. What pair of shoes do you have on your wish list? I like suede sandals with fringes.

Is it too early for you to sport the off-the-shoulder trend? I especially like the freshness of the new off-the-shoulder cotton blouses and if it gets breezy, I can always wear a light jacket. Wide or narrow, vertical, horizontal or diagonal, stripes are the next big thing. Do you see yourself in stripes? Personally I’m not a big fan of stripes – I prefer colour blocking. Current essential wardrobe item? My tan, leather bucket bag. What pair of shoes do you have on your wish list? Metallic sandals because it’s a trend that is still going strong.
Is it too early for you to sport the off-the-shoulder trend? No, because I can’t wait to wear my new, red Michael Kors ruffled off-the-shoulder silk-georgette dress. Wide or narrow, vertical, horizontal or diagonal, stripes are the next big thing. Do you see yourself in stripes? Yes, I think stripes make a bold fashion statement. Current essential wardrobe item? A scarf that can double up as a shrug. What pair of shoes do you have on your wish list? Do I have to choose only one pair? But if I had to choose I’d get a pair of suede, peep-toe ankle boots in tan.

That holiday feeling Whether you’re off on holiday somewhere fabulous or simply wish to feel fashionably relaxed in your own town, fashion and travel blogger Grazielle Camilleri shares a few casual outfit ideas. Photos by Federico Peltretti
E
ven though we live in a country that is a beautiful holiday destination for a lot of tourists, we all love a holiday. It gives us something exciting to look forward to, an escape from the daily grind. Unfortunately or fortunately (depending on your state of mind), we need to pack our luggage with essentials, gadgets and a holiday wardrobe. But what to pack?
34 - FM Issue 181
LEVART
Travel light
When on holiday, you want to feel special yet comfortable. Focus on items that help you do this. Place all the things you want to pack on your bed and then remove half of your selection. That helps you avoid the danger – and extra weight – of an extra pair of shoes that you will not wear anyway.
Where and what
Consider where you are travelling and what you will be doing. Then put your favourite items for these experiences on your bed in separate piles: dresses, tops, shoes, equipment, jackets and cover-ups, and swimwear. Anything that doesn’t have a specific use does not need to come on holiday with you.
Colour code your clothes
Look at everything and choose a common ground with matching colours. Thinking in terms of colours makes your choices even simpler. What you are doing here is ensuring everything works well together.
Accessorise
Jewellery and accessories will brighten up your outfits. However, don’t pack anything valuable.
Walk away CLOTHES, BAGS, SCARF, SHOES: ARMANI JEANS AT THE POINT WATCH: MICHAEL KORS
Admittedly, I’m guilty of packing too many shoes for travelling. Don’t make my mistake. Remember that shoes will increase your weight allowance more than clothing so try your best to stick to a bare minimum number of shoes that match more than one outfit
SUNGLASSES: DOLCE & GABBANA HAIR STYLING: MIXAS SALON LOCATION: CORINTHIA HOTEL ST GEORGE’S BAY
Slip in a few scarves
Scarves add very little to your load and will add variety to your holiday wardrobe. Use as a sarong, a burst of colour, for the beach, as a cover up over a bikini and around your neck to protect your shoulders from sun during lunchtime or at night if the weather is chilly.
Take more than one bikini to a beach holiday
If you are off to a beach holiday, you don’t want all your photos and selfies to be showing you in the same bikini. Bikinis are very light so pack three or four pairs.
Get smart
For a smarter look when sightseeing or shopping in the city, take a lightweight jacket and co-ordinating trousers or skirt – try white or a flattering pastel colour. A denim jacket is another good idea that will work with everything from your evening dress, skirts, trousers or even your sarong. FM

BEAUTY
Laying the foundation Dyna helps you find your perfect foundation shade.
W
hen it comes to finding your perfect foundation shade there are two things to keep in mind: undertone and the level of darkness of the foundation. The concept of undertone is quite complicated to summarise, so we’ll leave that out of the equation today. However the tips I will be sharing with you will also help you choose your foundation in terms of the undertone (actual colour tint), so technically you don’t need to know the dynamics of undertone to pick the right foundation shade – you just have to test it the right way and have a good eye. On the other hand, the level of darkness of the foundation is whether your foundation is too dark or too light or the appropriate shade. I will be sharing this to help you find your perfect foundation shade as you’re shopping for a new foundation in terms of how and where to test it properly to help you get the right shade.
#1 Apply foundation against jaw line. Dust some translucent powder under your foundation. This may sound crazy, but if you tend to get oily skin, this will help your make-up stay put because it will absorb your natural oils and prevents your foundation from slipping and sliding. I used a big powder brush to apply this.
#2 Wait for the foundation to oxidise Apply foundation. Make sure it gives at least medium coverage, so it can give you a flawless base. Pat it over areas where you want fuller coverage and blend wherever you don’t really need it all that much. I like a buffing brush for this step, but you can use whatever you’re comfortable working with.
#3 Wait for the foundation to set Fill in your eyebrows. You can use eyeshadow, brow powder, gel or pencil in the appropriate shade. This will help frame your face. I like to use an angled liner brush with eyebrow gel, as it helps give me a more precise application.
#4 Blend your foundation swatch against your jaw line Apply a metallic or shimmery eyeshadow all over your eyelid, inner eye corner and inner lower lashline. Or bathe in it, if you wish. Or don’t. Whatever floats your goat. If you have a champagne or gold shade, all the better. But you can even go for silver if you wish. Concealer brushes work lovely for packing on eyeshadow all over the lid. Or use your fingers – that works fabulously too.
36 - FM Issue 181
YTUAEB
#5 Walk around and check out the colour in different lighting Apply a warm brown in the crease and lower lashline. Actually, I used a bronzer, but you can use an eyeshadow. Or use a bronzer because, you know, you only live once.
#6 Try more than one colour on your jaw line so you can compare Apply a thin coat of mascara on the top and bottom lashes. You may wish to pack it on if you’re not familiar with false eyelashes. In that case, feel free to apply 10,000 coats of mascara. Comb through after each coat, as this will help them not look clumped up. And you may want to opt for three to four coats, as 10,000 might be a tad too much.
Dyna is a make-up artist, beauty blogger and beauty vlogger. Watch over 600 videos with beauty bargains, make-up lessons and make-up tutorials on www.youtube.com/xxxdynaxxx.
I hope you find these tips helpful. At the risk of sounding like a complete snob, I know we’ve been thought to test make-up on our hands, but if that foundation is intended to go on the face, you could easily be misled and choose the wrong shade. If you are not comfortable using tester make-up on your face, apply it on the back of your hand and put your hand against your jaw line instead. Even though, the shade on your hand could be different and should the foundation not be very opaque, it could potentially make you get a lighter shade, so keep that in mind. FM

MUM
The mother of all fashion Blogger Sacha Kinser helps new mums get back in the fashion game.
M
any mums can share the story of spending an immense amount of money on maternity clothes, only to find that when the baby arrived, they adopted a new wardrobe of yoga pants, t-shirts and flip flops. Your old clothes no longer fit and those fancy new maternity clothes lost their charm when you began losing your time and energy. Although it may seem impossible to look your best these days, it is still extremely important for you to look and feel great everyday, baby bump or no baby bump. Here’s a few style tips to get you back in the game.

Wrap it up
Missing those elastic waistbands yet? Try garments that give you the same security and cover those troublesome midriffs. Wrap tops and dresses that tighten higher on your rib cage will hide those problem areas and accentuate the thinner parts of your beautiful body.

One hit wonder
Make a bold statement with one big bang. Choose a statement accessory that fits your personal style. Maybe it’s a silky summer scarf, a sleek pair of shades, a big bangle, a bold necklace or a luxurious watch. Try purchasing a few new items that really stand out to see what makes you shine. Pair your piece with a neutral outfit that’s easy to mix and match for a fashionable, yet efficient, on-the-go lifestyle.

When it comes to mum jeans, the higher the better. Lucky for you, high waist jeans are back in town. Everybody’s wearing them! When covering your trouble zone, try for the button to sit at or just above the navel. You will look thinner and feel better instantly.

Smarty pants
Throw out those old sweatshirts that hide you away from the rest of the world. Find a nice fitted blazer – something cool and casual – and throw it over jeans or a dress. This feminine touch will add sophistication to your style and complete your outfit in a snap. Pick up your designer diaper bag and seize the day.

TRENDS
Think ahead FM helps you to start planning your AW16 wardrobe.
I
ERMANNO SCERVINO
t’s still too early to think about autumn and winter – after all, summer hasn’t even started yet. But you know how the saying goes – the early bird catches the worm. And in this case, the early bird gets to know what trends will be hot or not in the cold season. AW16 will certainly be busy and colourful. The catwalks of the big four fashion weeks showed a variety of trends, from head-to-toe white looks to animal prints, gothic creations and plenty of lace and velvet. Read on and update your wardrobe.
It’s all white
SAM WILSON, BRITISH FASHION COUNCIL
42 - FM Issue 181
We don’t normally associate white with the cold seasons. However, for AW16, the head-to-toe white look dips its feet in the cold water. It’s a very chic and refreshing suggestion, paired with clean cuts and oversized lines, as seen at Marni, Ermanno Scervino, Jill Sander and Bottega Veneta.

MOSCHINO
Yellow, especially in mustard shade, is enjoying a fabulous comeback, and will continue to rule the trends for AW16. If the shade is a tad too bright for you, consider toning it down with black accessories, as seen as Moschino and Roberto Cavalli.
Roar on Animal print continues to roam the fashion jungle, especially on coats. Bottega Veneta and Prada went for leopard and crocodile prints for the upcoming season.
Winter flowers
ALBERTA FERRETTI
In much the same way that we don’t normally associate white with cold seasons, we rarely see petals in bloom. But for AW16, get ready for light and sweet blooms, as seen at Giorgio Armani, Alberta Ferretti and Gucci.

Gothic beauty
FENDI
Fading beauty and gothic glamour are two running themes for AW16. Many designers offered creations inspired by eccentric, dramatic and fading grandeur, featuring stitch work, ripped chiffon, 1940s silhouettes and other quirky elements. It’s dark yet playful.
The 1970s show Gone but never forgotten – that’s the 1970s for you. This season, get ready for a retro party of bell-bottoms, suede and silk, as seen at Bally, Fendi and Versace.

MARCHESA
Velvet and lace Two colours reign over AW16: velvet and lace. Velvet makes for a very sophisticated look, especially when worn with a plaid shirt.

Bold and pure The new Dolce Rosa Excelsa Eau de Parfum captures the boldness and pure spirit of the rose with the essence of fresh petals in bloom. The precious heart of Dolce Rosa Excelsa seduces with two delicate and noble rose notes. Used for the first time in perfumery, the African Dog Rose premieres in this exquisite fragrance creation. This rare note is combined with the enveloping femininity of the Turkish Rose Absolute. Iconic, timeless and unique, the rose is a recurrent motif throughout Dolce&Gabbana’s runway collections. The Dolce Rosa Excelsa bottle mirrors the unique shape of Dolce and Dolce Floral Drops: thick glass, curved lines and a cap sculpted in the shape of a flower. With the purchase of any large fragrance from the Dolce pillar you will receive an exclusive vanity case. For local trade enquiries call VJ Salomone Marketing on 8007 2387.

LAST WORD
What goes around keeps coming around These trends will last longer than one season, blogger Sacha Kinser says.

Lace
Lace has always held a special place in our hearts, but we fell in love with Rodarte’s romantic Edwardian spring look – models adorned in lace, lace and more lace.
Fringe
LACE BY RODARTE
F
ashion is a revolving door that never stops turning. It’s in… It’s out… It’s on celebrities, and then it’s at your local charity shop. Every season there are new trends, colours and must-haves. If you don’t stay on top of things, you risk earning the so-last-season label. However, there are a few items that have mounted themselves into our wardrobe wall of fame and are clearly not going anywhere anytime soon. Buy them this season and you will have no regrets.
Chunky heel booties
A western contribution to fashion, the fringe adds boho chic to any outfit. Throw on your cross-body fringe bag by day and your thin fringe crop top by night. This flexible fashion statement will have you looking and feeling fabulous around the clock.
It’s all things retro in the shoe department this season. What better way to start jazzing up your shoe collection than with the versatile chunky boot heel? Wear them with pants or with a dress, with high socks or without, to work or to Paceville… you could even go out in your bikini with a retro pair of booties and still look incredible.
The crop top
Lace-up sandals
Although not recommended for everyone, this item is a true staple in any wardrobe. Show some skin and radiate confidence in a cool crop top this season. And if you’re not feeling so hot, simply pair it with highwaisted trousers.
The babydoll dress
Victorian-esque babydoll dresses continued to grace McQueen’s runway as the fashion house moves further away from ironclad corsets and obscure headdresses and closer to cascading ruffles and tousled hair.
Skinny trousers
I still remember when my brother was stealing the skinny jeans from my wardrobe because it was suddenly cool for everyone to wear skinnies. Needless to say, not much has changed and I don’t see the fashion forecast shooing these leg-lusting staples away anytime soon.
58 - FM Issue 181
Add some spice to your step with lace-up sandals this season. Heel or no heel, it’s the perfect shoe to turn your everyday casual step into a sexy stride. Chances are you’ve already bought a pair or two in the years past, but this trend is still on the rise so rest assured this shoe won’t let you down. If you’re ready for something new, grab yourself a pair of retro lace-up ballet flats and dance into the summer spotlight.
The neckerchief
Nobody does the neckerchief better than Manrepeller but that doesn’t mean you can’t try. There are countless ways you can tie a classic silk scarf around your neck. Pick up a few this season and have at it. FM
