JUNE 2017

High Street, Sliema St George’s Bay, Paceville

THE FUTURE OF FASHION We are living in a time of material abundance, we want for nothing, everything and everyone is disposable. Clothing is multimass produced and distributed around the world; globalization has transformed culture, the world economy and of course our daily lives. This global shift is most noticeable in the way we dress and how fashion is produced, sold, purchased, worn and disposed of. Our values are changing, time has become more valuable than money and convenience is imperative. It is becoming increasingly clearer that we are no longer obsessed with tradition, and are instead more open minded and liberal. We live life on our own terms and don’t take kindly to being told what to do. We are individuals and want to be seen that way. We no longer need this abundance, we are learning to live with less; a move to minimal. We are free to move around and we know that possessions will only weigh us down. We are content with less. Quality over quantity. Imagine a world where as consumers we are more conscientious and our purchases are driven by human rights, fair trade, environmental protection and community development. Clothing designed on sustainability, both environmentally and socially friendly. This is not a pipe dream, it could actually be the future. Many international brands have already seen the light and have introduced ethical and environmental initiatives. There is also a growing number of young up-and-coming designers who are putting the planet first. In this issue FM introduces some of the brands and designers leading the way to a sustainable future. A growing sector within the consumer market are looking for unique, authentic, one of a kind pieces and moving away from the mass produced. These consumers are turning to independent, artisan designers who reflect their same values and point of view. It’s an exciting prospect and great news for the fashion industry; the start of a bohemian revival.

“We started travelling back and forth for a couple of months but after some time I decided to move to Malta. It was a big step but I never regretted it. As soon as I moved here I encouraged Charles to take up dressmaking professionally and this is how it all started. We grew into it gradually and always made an effort to learn and improve. We had the opportunity to work on a collection with a close friend, Joseph Fountain, this was our very first show. This show set us off designing and showing 2 collections a year which at first carried the label “Beatrix” and later developed into “Beatrix by Charles & Ron”. Once we started showing our collections internationally we changed the label to Charles & Ron, as it is known today. I don’t think we ever made a conscious decision to follow a path in fashion, but once we met things just progressed naturally.” Today, Charles runs the studio and is also in charge of their bespoke orders and runway collections. Ron, now takes care of the overall operations of their business and shops and is also responsible for production. They both work closely on collection design and planning. Charles & Ron, are currently working on expanding the retail side of the business and adding new lines. In the coming months they will once again show their new collection in New York and Los Angeles.

Inspiration: C: Malta has always been of enormous inspiration to our work and throughout the years we have always enjoyed designing from a Mediterranean point of view. For us it’s important to incorporate certain aspects of culture, architecture and tradition interpret them in different unexpected ways. We’ve always incorporated these references into our design, we feel they define us as a brand. It’s important to embrace and appreciate your heritage. R: Our individual styles and inspiration references are quite different and the fact that I come from northern Europe and Charles is Mediterranean is quite interesting. Over the years we have developed our own style which inspired by the more outgoing Mediterranean style and colours but also with a more down to earth Northern European feel. Designers: C: When I started out I really admired Gianfranco Ferre and also Valentino. I also think that Alexander McQueen was a genius and very rare talent. R: I agree Mc Queen is a legend and was a very unique talent. I also admire the work designer Josep Font is doing at Del Pozo at the moment. For menswear a current favourite is my friend the Portuguese designer David Catalan, I love his collections. Lets talk about New York Fashion Week: It is super exciting to travel with a collection and show it to a new audiences. Showing in NY for the first time was an amazing experience. We had been invited several times and that year we promised ourselves that we would make it happen. And we did! It is a great satisfaction that our work is appreciated by international stars and to see that our Malta inspired styles have a global appeal. Favorite Collection: C: All our collections have a special place in my heart as we worked on all of them with love and passion and they all tell our story.

Love: R: I love creating new designs and collection ideas. I am always fascinated by the process of something that starts from an idea and later becomes a reality and I love seeing a model, celebrity or client wearing the final result. C: I love working on the runway samples and I also love giving women confidence and making them feel amazing in our designs. Hate: Things can get very hectic and stressful as there are times when you just have too much on your plate but there’s not much we really dislike. The local Scene: R: The scene has definitely expanded and improved and it is great to see new designers starting out. It is satisfying to know that we have helped encourage these young designers to believe that it is possible to have your own fashion business in Malta. We have always worked hard to encourage people to believe in and to support local creative talent. There is still a long way to go and it is important that we keep on educating the market by showing them that it is cool to buy from a local designer.

R: I always tend to like the last collection most, so my answer would be Fall/Winter 17/18 “Amare Argentum” collection.

C:Things have improved very much since the days we started. But the local scene can only be supported by clients actually buying from local designers. It’s not enough to just sit and clap at the fashion shows.

Secret to success:

Life Lesson:

R: hard work, compromise, making things work with what you’ve got and learning from your mistakes.

R: Believe in yourself. Ignore and avoid people that try to make you believe otherwise.

C: It’s a love affair!

C: Many times saying nothing is the best answer.

STYLE

Nicole Realisation Par Dress Every IT girl, blogger and style queen has donned one of Realisation Par’s dresses. They’re the perfect solution to long summer days which turn into balmy evenings and are the perfect accompaniment to a golden tan. Mango Kimono Jacket I’ve always been utterly obsessed with Asian-inspired clothing, especially kimono and Chinese-collared shirts or dresses. In my eyes, Mango can do no wrong this season and has fully embraced this trend. Perfect as a cover-up over a simple beach dress or worn with a white tee and worn-in mom jeans.

Bohemia Designs Round Straw Basket - I’m a self-proclaimed beach bum. As soon as the weather takes a turn and the sun starts rearing its head in a more consistent manner I immediately start plotting my beach escapes meaning a handy, stylish carry all is a must. A straw basket is ideal as not only can you fit all your beach-side accoutrements but is also a very classic item and is very easy to keep clean! PS – Beautiful handmade straw baskets can also be found at the market in Victoria Square in Gozo.

Claire Le Specs 'Nero' sunglasses If you've always dreamt of being a spy, then I've just found the perfect sunglasses for you. 'Nero' by iconic 80s brand 'le Specs' is a true winner. Look at that alluring cat-eye shape in an all black format; just delectable.

Uterque mustard yellow jumpsuit How many weddings are you invited to this Summer? I know, one too many right? Well at least you can look forward to getting dressed up I guess. This wonderfully decadent piece from Uterque will definitely be the talk of the town, if you're into that sort of thing!

STYLE

Claire Souldos embroidered espadrilles I love rocky beaches which means that a good pair of beach shoes is a must. Soludos never disappoint in this department. In fact, their espadrilles are so versatile I’ve taken them for a walk from the office straight to the beach countless times.

Sandro

ASOS OVAL Sunglasses I’ve been toying with two different styles of sunglasses to equip myself with this summer, one of which is a pair of orange-tinted sunglasses not too dissimilar to those worn by either Starsky or Hutch. I don’t know! The other pair, pictured here, is the iconic style seen in most depictions of Kurt Cobain. I am not entirely sure if they will suit my head shape but I’m ready for a test drive.

Chained & Able mini Tag Necklace I take umbrage with the majority of men’s jewellery lines because their necklaces are often chunky and far too long, as if to compensate for whatever department is perceived to be lacking by the design department. I favour small pendants hanging on thin chains that go down to my collarbone. This year, gold takes precedence.

ZARA Embroidered Jeans These light-wash jeans are my kind of bait. I have become so enamoured with embroidery I might as well take it up as a hobby and save myself a pretty penny. The shredded hem adds extra flair. I can’t wait to pair these denim delights with my new mules (not Gucci, alas), a white T-shirt and the abovementioned accessories.

FM 183 - 15

STYLE

Kira I love a platform, extra height but still super comfy. These platform wedges by Stella McCartney will look cute dressed up or down – the perfect summer sandal.

Wide leg trousers will be replacing maxi skirts in my closet this season. I love this pair by Juan Carlos, such a gorgeous colour. They look great teamed with a little crop top.

Anyone who knows me knows I'm obsessed with cats, this Gucci applique tee is everything!

Carina

These Adilette Velvet Slides look so soft and comfy I can’t wait to have them on my feet.

Practical and stylish this Louis Vuitton trunk inspired phone holder would be a wise investment for me. Balenciaga, my Love! I already have the shirt, now I’m after the dress and satin trousers / boots.

16 - FM 183

STYLE

Luke I’m a bit of a sucker for black and white, I love the graphic stripes on this shirt and the boxy cut.

I prefer looser fitting clothes in summer, these jersey cropped chinos look cool, comfortable and light weight.

I’m always on the hunt for that perfect basic white t-shirt. It has to be the right cut and the right fabric. This T-shirt seems to offer both but also unusual and has an element of interest.

the future of fashion The future is unwritten. Now is the time to be thinking of the future. Sustainable fashion is a growing trend, maybe it is just that, a trend; or could this be the future of fashion? FM is looking to the future and exploring the world of sustainable fashion.

NOAH - noahny.com When we started this company, we knew that the future of the world relied on business being more humane. We thought we had more time to get up to speed, both in our operations and our ability to share information with our customers. Fastforward to now: we realize that the world won’t wait. With the shift in power occurring both in the US and in foreign governments, our vision of small businesses using their practices to help combat unjust policies is essential. As we sit here talking about what’s cool or not, decisions are being made on our behalf that may seriously damage our way of life. Now more than ever, our choices matter. You don’t have to shop with us, but you should take the time to know what’s going on and then decide for yourself how to proceed.

MALAIKA (New York) - malaikanewyork.com New York-based MALAIKA is a minimalistic and futuristic Scandinavian apparel brand with focus on sustainable, highquality garments and accessories. Our progressive mindset is the pillar of everything we design and produce. Our goals are long term wearability and sustainability. Instead of following traditional fashion seasons, we design pieces that will be a statement in the now and in the future, and for each garment sold a tree will be planted for the canopy project in East Africa. Everything is produced locally in New York to maintain quality and standards, but also to support the US garment industry. MALAIKA strives to be sustainable by minimizing waste, and recycling fabrics/plastics back into our designs. To further minimize waste, our collection is made with simplified or zero waste patterns - giving each design a distinct purpose. We plant a tree for each garment sold.

AGURK - agurkstudio.com AGURK stands for innovative, creative and sustainable fashion. AGURK is a Danish fashion brand that creates feminine streetwear inspired by 80s vintage sports clothing. It is all about experimenting with design, materials and colours – all mixed in prints, patchwork and new silhouettes. The company name was chosen because it refers to the feeling designers have when creating – going bananas in the approach to fashion. AGURK’s intention is to encourage and inspire women to feel the same way. The design universe is humorous and down to earth, as the collections contain stories interpreted in prints as well as casual elegance shown in a love of white shading colours. Founders are opened in the design process and love to share what it means to be a designer in a young fashion brand. AGURK is well-aware of the environmental and social challenges of the 21st century. The task to be sustainable is not easy, but the brand aims high and takes small-but-important steps, to get closer to the goal of the minimal ecological footprint. AGURK takes green approach in the design stage as well as in production and supply stage – by using GOTS organic certified cotton jersey as one of the main materials minimal and delivering apparel of high quality.

NUDIE JEANS - nudiejeans.com 100% Organic Cotton, the decision to use organically grown and harvested cotton is self-evident. If there is a method to make the land where the cotton is grown and harvested stronger and more sustainable, but also make our product more sustainable, there is no other option. We keep striving towards presenting an entire collection made from organic cotton. Growing cotton, the conventional way, is a chemical intense process. These chemicals can pollute both the soil and the water. Organic cotton is grown without any artificial fertilizers, pesticides or genetically modified cotton. In some countries there’s a difference between minimum wages and the actual cost of living. We pay our share of living wages to the workers involved in the manufacturing of our clothes in India. Around 70% of our garments are made in Europe where wages are on a different level. In collaboration with the garment factories we bear the responsibility to provide a safe, fair and ethical working environment for all the people who are involved in the manufacture of our clothes. We work together with only a handful of partners, all of whom are required to comply with our code of conduct. Our membership of Fair Wear Foundation is a key element ensuring that everyone across the production chain works under fair conditions.

FASHION

ISLE & AQUA I have been painting for as long as I can remember, but only took it up professionally about a year ago. I studied in London for 5 years at the London College of Fashion, where my BA course focused on garments that contour the shape of the body, such as lingerie and swimwear. I chose to follow the path of swimwear design and development, it just felt more natural too me coming from a hot country where we live in a bikini for months on end. I am quite technical in the way I think, but obviously I also want my designs to be aesthetically pleasing. For this collection I was heavily inspired by interior design and finding a balance between sporty comfort and a glamorous aesthetic. I often design by thinking of a solution to a problem, for example in terms of functionality or what is lacking in the current swimwear market. I think swimwear is the perfect mix between a fashion item and a product. With garments I think it’s really difficult to compete with brands who are able offer runway-like pieces at an extremely affordable price. With swimwear on the other hand, almost all the high-street brands come out with the same styles, colours and patterns, all practically identical to the seasons before. There is a huge lack in swimwear that is designed with love and made to fit well. I have just recently launched my swimwear brand, but have been working on it for over a year. Now that the creative side is over, I’m focusing on the Business and marketing side of starting a brand, something quite new to me. I’m also starting to work on my newest series of portraits around the concept of ‘Mother Earth’ Hopefully I will continue doing what I love for a very long time!

MUM ON THE RUN

Photos by Paul Trapani Galea Feriol

Blogger and Stylist, B-Biche, our Dutch girl with a French name, is living her Mediterranean dream. She styles windows, models, strangers and of course her gorgeous baby girl Lola Olivia. Our resident Mum On The Run, shares her tips and tricks on how to balance comfort and style.

MONDAY Kicking off with an exaggeratedly early wake-up call from Lola, followed by the compulsory coffee, nappy change, porridge and play-time. That’s how Monday started! Meetings, meetings, and yet more meetings are on my agenda. I love to start a new week with maximum productivity. Today’s look is a balanced mix of both comfort and elegance, with a pop of print and splash of color, because that makes me happy at the end of these (long) days.

WED

TUESDAY

Tuesdays are for tracksuits! At least, this Tuesday is. I just couldn’t get into any other outfit today, as I’m trying to process all of yesterdays’ information and inspiration, whilst juggling Lola duties on the side - hashtag challenge. 100% comfortable look it is! This, very me look, with happy colours and something leopard thrown in for good measure, is an instant mood booster and kept me sharp all day. Oh, and those heels? They kept the outfit from heading into a super sporty direction! What do you think?

White Wednesday! If it was up to me, I would wear this tee every day. I just love crisp white t-shirts and yep - I own many of them. Basic and fresh, ideally with denim. A neutral look allows for a twist, especially today, hurray! I had some errands to run (some fun, and some less fun) so I needed that little something extra. Thanks to these flashes of metallic awesomeness, I was ready to shine!

THURSDAY Today is THE day! The grand finale. After Mondays’ big lunch meeting, with a fabulous new client, I am fully confident that I understand her brief and know what look she’s after. Thanks to yesterdays’ research, and these uber comfy booties, it should now be a walk in the park to pick out these new pieces. Bing, bang, BOOM!

FRIYAY, I think you mean! After nearly breaking my neck over Lola’s new cupcake bake bucket, I finally managed to get myself to the gym in one piece. I always like to end my week with a Crossfit pilates session. It makes me feel fully refreshed, and oh so ready for the weekend! I’m already looking forward to my girls night out. Casual - chic, plus some drinks, fun fun fun!

SAT

Today starts, just like any other day, with a coffee to go. Lola knows the deal - no parenting until coffee. Apparently, that deal also includes no ears, when wearing these shiny, dangling earrings. Danger! Not long after capturing this outfit of the day, Lola grabbed and pulled my earring, Ole’. I can’t blame her though, they really are fantastic!

FRIDAY

SUNDAY

After a long week and a couple of late nights, it was time for something light and bright. Hey, that rhymes! I’m pretty sure that if I had to wear one outfit for the rest of my life, it would be this one. The colours make me so, so, happy, as do these fabrics. Easy and breezy, but both dressy and comfy! Perfect Sunday strolling’ material - Bring on Monday!

TIPS

OH

NO YOU DIDN’T! FM is here to help you avoid summer fashion’s greatest pitfalls!

Fanny Packs Seriously, why?

BAD

We’ve all been there: starring at a mirror in an A/Ced room, wearing something we think looks amazing and, then, boom… We head out onto the melting asphalt roads and realise the weather is what our parents and the parish priest warned us hell would be like. And we’ve also all been there in terms of thinking something looks great only to have a Facebook memory pop up two years down the line and think: What had possessed me to wear that? Well… Hopefully our snappy guide to what not to wear this summer will help you avoid that dreadful feeling altogether.

40 - FM 183

TIPS

Socks and Sandals A bit of a conundrum as some people can actually pull this off but, as a rule of thumb, socks and sandals should be avoided like the plague.

Boots It’s summer, it’s hot, it’s sticky. Anything over and above Chelsea or ankle boots will make people think you have nothing to wear – and ensure you’re super uncomfortable. Crocs Unless you’re a nurse or a chef on duty, then Crocs should not even be part of your vocabulary.

GOOD FM 183 - 41

TIPS

BAD

White Patent Shoes For the love of God, bin them. After all, there’s a reason why many people wear them to Hamalli parties! Political Tops Fashion can be used as a political statement but that doesn’t mean that you should have a political party’s statement on your clothes. Once the election is done and dusted, fold up your ‘God Save the King’ and ‘It’s On’ tees and place them in the memory box. Low-Waist Jeans We’re all for vintage and we’re all for recycling but we’re also all for 2017 and looking towards the future. So, no, the ChristinaAguilera-circa-2002 look will just not cut it.

Bra Straps It’s a hard one, particularly as we want you to feel comfortable and supported. So, our advice here is to invest in a range of bras that will allow you to wear your favourite outfits without having the strap showing.

42 - FM 183

TIPS

GOOD Thick Materials We know, winter makes it easier for you to layer on clothes, and mix and match textures, but it’s not winter. Wearing thick fabrics – wool, canvas, corduroy, sequins – will make you sweat… And it doesn’t matter how great your outfit looks, sweating will ruin it.
