Welcome to the March issue of Coffs Coast FOCUS.

I

t’s quite a thrill to be exposed to many great people month in month out … learning people’s stories and penning their lives to print. This month the FOCUS team showcase the many adventures of fabulous locals as they surface along with the pure pleasures in life; restaurants, coffee haunts, fashion, furniture, new bars, where to holiday, tourism goss, horoscopes, amazing photography, surfing and the arts - all of my favourite things! FOCUS is like a really fun party where the whole town is invited and that truly makes my heart warm. INSIDE THE ISSUE It’s that time of year again where we showcase our annual Women in Business feature, flip to the feature

and you’ll find entrepreneurial and enterprising business women that call our this pocket of the world home. Wedding feature headed by our own Sam Dawson (who doubles as marriage celebrant; Married by Sam). You may or may not know that I’m a yoga freak (read: yoga instructor) and I was so happy to interview seasoned yoga guru, Lisa Telford from Yoga for the Seasons... ON THE COVER Beer enthusiasts get ready for an adventure and shimmy on down to Mother’s Milk, Sawtell. The quaint historical building has been transformed in to a new boutique beer house where husband and wife duo Courtney and Laura Tune are bringing us an unpretentious

I have taken Samahra under myy ting wing and I’ll be following and reporting rs on all of her wins in the coming years us, simply because I think she is gorgeous, hardworking, driven, polite and fabulous - at only 15 she is already an o inspiration to all. here did you grow up? Tell us about your childhood … I was born in a town called Temora in 1954, one of eight children in a very hard working class family, great grounding and moral and beautiful parents. My father was a train driver in those days - steam and then diesel; my mother stayed at home and looked after the house cooking, cleaning and taking care of the children. Aside from hospitality, what are your other passions? My other passions are food, wine and music. If my friends were to describe me, they would say that I'm happiest when I'm playing music, cooking fresh produce and drinking nice Australian wine. It doesn't get any better than that. We've all seen your and Laura's brand new project situated in First Ave, Sawtell. Please tell all … We've just finished fitting out the old Hamey building at 63 First Ave, Sawtell, turning it into a Taphouse and store. On the taphouse side of things we'll be featuring a number of beers from craft breweries around Northern NSW, and on the store's side we'll be stocking a range of value added produce from around the region. We'll be doing tasting paddles for the beer and tasting plates for the food, so people will be able to come and sit and sample some of what the region has to offer. Why did you call it Mother's Milk? I've heard a lot of people over time refer to a good beer as 'Mothers Milk', and I love my milk too (not necessarily straight from the boob!)

… so I thought it was only appropriate that we name it Mother's Milk. What is the history behind the heritage listed space you've sourced? We're located in the old Hamey building ... it's a nice big open space with lots of character, including old floorboards and solid old brick. When we were fitting it out, there was heaps of interest from locals who'd delivered papers there as kids or remembered it as the old newsagent. For a while they were talking about demolishing the building, so I think the locals appreciate that some work has been put into fixing up the building. What did the space look like prior to swinging the doors open, and who were the master minds behind the gorgeous fit out? Laura and I had a few of our own concepts that we wanted to do with the space, including exposing some of the old Sawtell brick, lighting concepts and making use of some nice old furnishings we had in store. We also worked with Nicolle from Natural Habitat to help us

SEASONED FASHION DESIGNER AMANDA GILHAM HAS JUST OPENED HER BRAND NEW FLAGSHIP P STORE IN COFFS CENTRAL, HOUSING HER OWN FASHION LABEL PHYLLIS & MIMOSA. THE TRAVEL L INSPIRED LABEL EMPHASISES COASTAL LIFESTYLE WITH STATEMENT PRINTS, RESORT WEAR AND N ND FASHION BASICS ENCOMPASSING THE LATEST READY TO WEAR DESIGNER FASHION.

ell me a little about you and your husband, David … Where are you both from? How are you and your family finding the Coffs Coast? I’m originally from Townsville, but Melbourne has been home up until we moved to Hong Kong. We then settled in Byron five years ago. The benefit of opening stores in new locations is that you really get to spend time and explore that part of the world. This has certainly been the case with Coffs Harbour. My 12-year-old son, Charlie, attained his scuba license over summer and can’t wait to dive the Solitary Islands. The label was born in Byron Bay and you've just opened your Coffs Central flagship store, making this your fourth store. Where are your other stores and how is the store being received in our community? Besides the new Coffs Central store, we have stores in Newcastle, Townsville and Byron. We are focusing on seaside locations that have a fashionable, relaxed lifestyle. We spent considerable time in Coffs (many Saturday lunches at Latitude 30!) before we committed to the store, and it was really the locals that gave us the confidence to open here. Since opening, the well wishing support has been incredible - even flowers from Pansabella Café - what a great neighbour!

What is your background, what type of fashion career have you had? I’d describe my career as very hands on, learning from amazing, successful people in the industry. I’ve been involved in the industry since leaving school, starting with Sportsgirl in Townsville. I was then offered a managerial position with Esprit in their flagship store in Melbourne and before long had itchy feet to do something on my own. This lead to launching the Endless Spirit label with partners who were successfully established in the fashion industry and were generous in passing on their knowledge and skills, particularly with off-shore manufacturing. How did you come up with the name? Originally we started with two separate labels. Phyllis Boho was the designer kaftan, resort range, and Mimosa was all about event dressing. The inspiration around the Mimosa name came from sitting on a beach in Thailand, feeling like a drink before 12 and agreeing a champagne and orange would be appropriate - so we ordered two Mimosa cocktails! Phyllis was David’s grandmother’s name, and she was an amazingly eccentric woman, beaming with confidence. We thought kaftans in bold, exclusive prints were a perfect fit. As we were developing the retail concept, the brands sat perfectly together, covering all occasions, so we changed the name to Phyllis and Mimosa. Where do you source your inspirations for

Susan Clarke Community Development Officer Cultural & Community Development Team Coffs Harbour City Council hat is Harmony Day? Harmony Day is celebrated nationally every year on the 21 March. The message of Harmony Day is Everyone Belongs. It is a day to celebrate Australia’s diversity. It is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. There are many ways we can celebrate Harmony Day – through sport, dance, art, film, music, storytelling, cooking and sharing cultural meals. By participating in Harmony Day activities, we can learn and understand how all Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and make it a better place. Harmony Day is an Australian Government programme and coincides with the United Nations' International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Since 1999 Harmony Day has been widely celebrated across schools, childcare centres, community groups, churches, businesses and federal, state and local government agencies. Tell us about the 2014 Multicultural Harmony Festival held here on the Coffs Coast ... The Multicultural Harmony Festival is our city’s way of acknowledging the principles of Harmony Day – and it’s a great community event. On the third weekend in March each year the people of Coffs Harbour celebrate the city’s growing cultural diversity with the Multicultural Harmony Festival. In the beautiful surroundings of the Northcoast Botanic Garden, festival activities commence with the screening of 'Colourfest' Multicultural Film Festival on Saturday evening, 15 March - films, food and good humour under the stars. exclusively on migrant and diasporic stories. Colourfest was conceived as a response to the lack of cultural diversity on Australian screens – gates open at 6.30pm; bring your chairs and blankets. On Sunday 16 March, the Festival Day commences at 9am with a Traditional Welcome to Country by a local elder followed by the welcoming of our newest citizens, with a Citizenship Ceremony overseen by the Mayor. Then, at 10am the colourful festival activities really get into full swing, with performances and activities running throughout the day until 4pm. Each year organisers work hard to ensure that the event connects with the community on a whole range of levels, with: Tallowood Bush Band, Didjital Percussion/ Dance Band, professional Sirens Bollywood Dancer Group, a wonderful array of local multicultural and community performances, kids' activities – shows, face painting, storytelling and more, and for the first time local youth artists will showcase their talents, tasty, tempting multicultural foods, cooking demonstrations and the list goes on – and it's all free (gold coin donation by choice). How long has this festival been running? The festival first began in 2006 with just a few hundred attendees. In 2013, over 4,500 shared the love at the festival, and organisers are hoping that with even more planned this year, and into the future, these numbers will continue to increase. Mushroom. Oh how I love when autumn saunters in and brings with it a big healthy load of mushrooms. One of the most under utilised foods available, and if you can bear a quick geeky moment, I can explain why. Your taste buds only provide your brain with the information pertaining to how sweet, salty, sour or bitter food is. All other flavours come from aroma profiles trapped in the food and aerosolised through heat or chewing. The more of each of those four element you can get into a dish, the more flavoursome it feels in the mouth. There is though a lesser known fifth tasting element: umami, the savoury element. Mushrooms are one of the low sodium alternatives to increasing umami characteristics in your dish, and as with adding a little salt to a dish, adding a little umami can make a dish pop! So add some mushrooms whole to a few dishes ... or even mince them up with your onions or garlic for a truly amazing lift to a soup or stew.

ho iiss th ho the e fac fface ace behind the Restful Nest, and how was this idea born? My name is Sharon Chisholm, and I first became interested in interiors over 20 years ago, when I bought and renovated a 200 year old house in a small English village just outside London. I studied Interior Design with the Royal Academy of Fine Art, gaining my diploma with a distinction and went on to renovate and sell further houses before moving to Australia. Twelve years and a family later, I decided that it was time to start my own

business. Des What services do you offer? Interior Design and Decoration, Pre-sale Home Styling and Professional De-cluttering and Organising. What are the major aspects of interior design? For me, it’s really about helping people to create a home that they love to spend time in - a place that reflects the lives and the passions of the people who live there. Along with this, it’s helping people to create an organised and functional space that works whatever their lifestyle - somewhere that flows with the minimum amount of time, effort and

money needed to keep it comfortable and organised. With Pre-sale Home Styling, I assist clients to maximise the profit from the sale of their home by presenting it at its best - this may involve minor decoration, styling or de-cluttering. What are some of the current trends? If you watch any of the shows on TV, you’ll recognise that the 'industrial' look is very popular. I don’t personally like to encourage my clients to follow the trends as such – every person is different and everyone’s needs from their homes are different. Someone with a family is probably going to have very different requirements to a single professional, for example. How often do you see trends changing? Oh, all the time. The magazine covers are always talking about seasonal trends and 'this year’s colours'. If you were to follow the trends all the time, your home would never be finished. What is your point of difference? I don't believe in rushing out and spending a fortune on new items - I try to work with what my clients already have that they love and only suggest adding new things if necessary. Together with my clients, we develop a vision for the home that they can work towards - it doesn't have to be done all at once. A home

is an evolving ... and so on. A home is an evolving energy, a welcome retreat from the outside world, a place where you can be yourself with the ones you love (even if it’s just the goldfish). I am approachable and honest and do not judge people (or their homes). I would never push my clients to make new purchases they don’t need. Having worked as an award winning Life Coach, I am also able to work with my clients on an emotional level when dealing with clutter problems or long-term habits that prevent them from living a stressfree and fulfilled life in a home that they love. Any tips for the DIY decorator? For me, the most important one is to only buy what you love. Never buy something because it’s 'fashionable', unless you also totally love it. If you see an item you adore (and can afford it of course), you will never regret the decision to take it home, even if you don’t know where you’re going to use it. So many people buy the latest trend, only to regret it afterwards.

URQUHART here do you chef? Newly appointed Head Chef at Flooded Gums Restaurant, Bonville Golf Resort. When did you know that you wanted to be a chef? From a young age; my parents had been in the industry long before I was born. My dad, Ray, a chef since the early seventies, was my main inspiration; although he tried to discourage me entering into the industry, I’m pretty sure I was born into it. Where did you earn your stripes? Mainly working at my parents' restaurant, 'No.2 Oak Street', but also working the ‘pans’ at the iconic Brisbane French restaurant 'Baguette Bistro', along with other high end restaurants in Brisbane and also the ACT. Along the way there were a few appearances alongside well known chefs in Sydney. What attracted you to the role at Bonville? After finishing my role as Head Chef at 'No.2 Oak Street', I turned down a few offers in Sydney and Brisbane, deciding to stay on the Coffs Coast. Bonville had the best reputation in the area for a dining destination, and I was offered a job where I could still show my more creative side within the role.

What's your favourite dish on the menu and why? My pork belly with plum, morcilla, and granola dish on the dinner menu. Why? Pork belly is always a crowd pleaser, but I’m making the balance as good as I can within such a simply presented dish to showcase the great flavours and textures. The morcilla in the dish is pureed Spanish blood sausage with a wonderful array of flavours. I encourage people to try something new, as dining out is all about experiencing something you wouldn’t at home. What do you know about, or think of, food bloggers? I know a little about bloggers, as I've seen a fair few over the last few years with the increase of its popularity. Generally, it’s a plus for the food industry. What are you going to bring to the Bonville kitchen? Hopefully a new and fresh outlook, and update the à la carte dinner menu. I’m working with a great team of chefs at Bonville and work closely with the Executive Chef Darren Ryan to make changes across all aspects of dining at Bonville. Do you have any tips for budding chefs or restaurateurs? If anyone wants to make it in this field - hard work, passion, training and persistence will always help.

What's your food philosophy? My philosophy is simply - keep it simple. Sometimes when you have great produce, and know how to treat it properly, it’s a case of less really is more. Some of my food may seem a little complicated, but in reality all I do is make a few key ingredients shine in the best way I know how. Working with classic techniques and a few tweaks keeping within current food trends creates beautiful dishes. coffs coast focus

What is the history behind your business? Natural Habitat Interiors & Design was born 20 yrs ago. After having already been working in the industry for some time, we wanted to bring a different level of design and professionalism to the area as it began to grow.

March heralds a change of season … how do they go by so fast? If you want to savour the moment this month, head down to the Jetty Memorial Theatre on Harbour Drive and enjoy! With film, music and theatre on offer, you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Tell us what makes your business unique? Without a doubt that would be experience! We have worked on many industry categories, from residential projects, health, aged care, hospitality, retail and education. Versatility is our specialty.

Once again Flickerfest is coming to town on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 March. Flickerfest is Australia’s only Academy ® - accredited and BAFTA-recognised short film competition. Celebrating its 23rd year, Flickerfest remains a platform for showcasing the most entertaining and innovative short filmmaking from around the world.

What makes you stand out above your competitors? We have depth of knowledge in a broad range of design disciplines, from industrial and graphic design, to project management, merchandising and styling, which makes us really well rounded and solid designers. What do you enjoy most about working on the Coffs Coast? The changing face of the town, and our involvement; bringing a touch of Sydney or Melbourne to retail and hospitality venues, and seeing the public embracing and enjoying those spaces is really rewarding. What has been your biggest achievement to date? That’s tricky, there have been many over the years, but more recently being part of the Design Team at Gowings and the transformation of Coffs Central has been wonderful!

On Sunday 16 March, Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium presents Ensemble Offspring. This dynamic touring group featuring flute, clarinet and vibraphone will be performing an engaging and fun program of brand new Australian and international compositions.

Got your business a New Year's resolution If you have been putting off getting your business a new website or some needed branding … the time is now! We were you always been a fan of supported by friends, colleagues, associates and the d-floor? I was asked by Deborah Mauger family members from across the Coffs Coast and of Parry's Jewellers to participate in DWCCS. I beyond! have never done any 'dancing' before, although Who makes up your team at the pharmacy, I have been involved in the Bishop Druitt College and did they double as your fundraising Melodrama with the Mayor Denise Knight team? My team is made up of Pharmacists back in the day. Like most of the 'stars', it was Larissa Lewis and Alison Aylott, plus Leonie certainly outside of my comfort zone to get up Teale, Tracey Swanston, Leann Hickey, Karen and perform a dance in front of 470 people! I Fitzgerald, Katherine Tyzack, Debbie Fensom, was motivated to participate as I have been Kelly Brandon, Amy Swanston, Oakin Suffolkinvolved with so many people in my Lyons, Lyndell Lee; without their passion professional life who have had and hard work, I could never have their lives touched by cancer, raised so much. and on a personal note, How did the great people IThe people of I lost my mum to gall ed of Urunga get behind ow sh a Urung bladder cancer just last t an br vi a t you and this event? ha w n once agai year. ity un m m The people of Urunga co ng ri and ca What dance did aced br em ey showed once again what th as , it is activities you perform on a vibrant and caring my fundraising ts and the night, and who community it is, as they with open hear ey got was your dance deep pockets! The best part You should be very proud to have raised about being involved is an obvious feeling of the most amount of money for the Cancer satisfaction on my part for raising a significant Council. How did you raise the funds? My sum for the Cancer Council, great pride in focus in being a part of DWCCS was always to my team at Urunga Amcal Pharmacy for the raise as much money as I could for The Cancer way they got involved, and gratitude to all my Council. Sawtell Art Gallery was created 35 years ago by two local ladies who had the urge to paint and be creative; this led to promoting and recruiting more members. Obviously the community was ready for this wonderful journey, and as membership grew larger, premises were urgently needed. Not daunted by this large task, they investigated and acquired land from The Lands Department on a 20 year lease.

I

t has not always been smooth sailing. What challenges has the gallery faced in the past year, and how has the group overcome these? We inducted a new committee seven months ago, due to very difficult circumstances. The new committee has worked tirelessly, with members bringing the group back to an amazing cohesive group of students, teachers and members. Fundraising, with assistance from the committee and members, has given us back our gallery. Increasing financial stability, due to donations from the community, Sawtell Rotary Club and with renewed memberships, means this resilient group is coming back. As Arnold would say, "We're back". Tell us about the recent grant that allowed people from all walks of life to participate in the program Art Extraordinare Camp ... The gallery was successful in receiving the C.A.S.P. grant, again with support from the community, the Mayor, Denise Knight, her staff and Arts Mid North Coast. The program was instigated by our new committee to have an inclusive gallery, including the aged, people with health or any kind of disability. The Sawtell Art Gallery arranged for artists who had been teaching at Camp Creative to stay and do short, more manageable workshops for students and artists from all walks of life and abilities.

Who are some of the teachers? Louise Corke and Christine Williams, who have been invited back to Camp Creative for many years, graciously accepted our invitation to take part in this great event. Louise Corke is an expert in pastel; however, this two day workshop was in mixed media. This gave students the opportunity to try new materials for different effects. Louise will be holding a workshop in June 2014 at S.A.G. Christine Williams' workshop was very exciting and lots of fun; she taught in oil and acrylic, with great success. She has exhibited in the EMSLA at the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery for the past two years. Sawtell Art Group is thrilled, as Christine has just moved to the area and is now teaching acrylics on Tuesday mornings at S.A.G. Expressions of interest are welcome for Tuesday afternoon classes. Our plans for the coming year are exciting. Our annual exhibition in September is always exciting. We have planned workshops and members' exhibitions with some themed - we have three terms throughout the year, with social painting and youth workshops and lessons. Our aim is to become an inclusive and cohesive group of artists, students and friends in our community. Sawtell Art Group 6658 6477 www.sawtellartgroup.com.au

listen to what brides and grooms tell me and what particular issues arise when organising their big day.

Recently I was chatting to a couple, and they told me that the task of seating everyone was surprisingly, to them, one of their hardest tasks. I would imagine deciding who to invite would be the first hard task, but I have been told where to place everyone is the next! In this day and age when families have so many different combinations, it can be a logistical nightmare to set up a seating chart that suits everyone. Remember, you’re not going to be able to make everyone completely happy! The first person to talk to is your fiancé, as you need to decide if you are going to be the sole decision makers or if you will be taking requests from friends and family. Traditionally, the bride sits at the groom’s right, but today the current trend seems to be to have all the bridesmaids next to the bride and groomsmen alongside the groom. The rest of the party follows suit in an alternating male/female pattern. If you are having a small wedding party, you may want to include their spouses or dates at the head table. Or, you may choose to spread your wedding party around at the guest tables, which would also allow them to sit with their partners. The table of honour is the table closest to the bride and groom table and is where the parents of both the bride and groom and sometimes grandparents sit during the reception. Divorced parents should be seated at different tables of honour with their partners and close family and friends. It’s great to seat married couples at the same table. Younger children should be seated with their parents or, if you have a lot of children attending, you might want to have a 'kids table' which is strategically placed near their parents with some crayons and paper or other games and toys to keep them busy. A wedding I attended recently had the friends divided up in groups that the bride had been friendly with at different parts of her life and from the various places she lived. This was so lovely, and it made for such a great catch up too. Younger people who love music should be at tables close to the music, while older guests may want a quieter table. I suppose the best thing to do is suit yourselves and try not to stress out trying to meet everyone’s requests, and remember it is your day! www.marriedbysam.com.au facebook.com/marriedbysam 0417 861 045.

Jan and Wally

General

Jan and Wally Nikolyn are owners of the Mullaway General Store. What the Kombi enthusiasts love about their day job is that no two days are ever the same. hen did you and your husband, Wally, first move to the Coffs Coast, and where are you both originally from? We first moved to the Coffs Coast from Brisbane, where we managed backpack hostels in 1996. We had been here on holidays previously and when the chance came we moved to Mullaway, a much better place to bring up our children - we jumped at it. Wally is originally from Kandos, and I'm from Sydney's eastern suburbs. We have both lived in various places, Mullaway being our longest home. When did you guys buy the Mullaway General Store? We brought the Mullaway Store in 2004 after leasing the business for three years previously, in which time we built the business into a viable living; so, after a family conference we decided to purchase it. Our children, Amanda and Dylan, were very excited. 40 coffs coast focus.

What makes the Mullaway General Store so special to so many people? Tell us about the day to day runnings of the store ... Mullaway Store is special to people as it is a community store. It's the people that make it. Some people would think working seven days a week it would be like groundhog day, but each day is very different. Over the years many young people have worked here, all from this community, sometimes the same family, and they all know the community. We always get the kids before school and the regulars for milk and bread, but every day someone different or something unusual occurs. That's what we love about the store. Naturally, we have different deliveries come in each day. We cook for the road workers, school kids, locals, tourists or fruit pickers. There is always something to do. Wally delivers newspapers to Darlington, Arrawarra, Lorrikeet, United servo and home deliveries, so he always has a story to tell. We raise money for local fundraisers and host music out the front to give back to

We've both always loved Kombis. Both of our families owned them. We have friends who own them, and we have both owned Volkswagen Beetles. We love the old school feel. We arrived in Mullaway in a Kombi camper, and we use them a lot. It's all about the adventure. Where did the names Nirvana and Mango come from? Out of you and Wally, whose Kombi is whose? My car (Jan's) is Nirvana (1964) and the name comes from my special place. Wally's car is Mango (1959) and the name comes from the colour, and Mango is the fruit to my Nirvana. However, we like to swap. The gift of personalised number plates made them even more special, with Nirvana being 64VDUB and Mango 59VDUB. There is Old Bar Beach Festival, Nimbin Mardi Grass and many more around Australia but personally, Valla is our favourite, which is has all types of Volkswagens and is on this year from 28 July to 4 August. We love the waves, peace signs, horns beeping, people chatting, photo shoots and the recognition of the old school Kombi. It's cool! Also, we would like to say it has been fantastic highlighting the Coffs Coast tourism using our Kombis in TV commercials, Qantas magazines, billboards and bride magazines. Accountants seem to have a reputation of being dull and boring, so we want to move away from that image. From a business perspective, I always have my clients’ best interests at heart, so that they get the best possible outcome wherever they may be heading. Whether that requires a conservative or aggressive approach will depend on the individual circumstances. Self-Managed Super-funds are the current buzz words - what is your stance on this? Self-managed Super is becom-

ing very popular. People are becoming more investor savvy and seem to be better educated financially these days. Buying property via a self-managed fund is now common practice. There are positives and negatives of Self-Managed Super. We take an education of client approach, so that they are guided and advised every step of the way. Knowledge is power. For someone considering your services, do you offer a free consultation? Our first consultation is usually free. We like to discuss client needs to see if our services will be the best fit for their needs. Once we have agreed on services provided, our costs are then fully explained, so that there are no surprises. Our aim is to provide value and let the client choose our level of involvement. It’s all about what the client is comfortable with. And moving forward, do you offer an hourly rate, or will I be charged for things like sending an email to you? We don’t charge for short answer emails or general phone enquiries. I encourage our clients to contact us without fear of the clock running, so that we can point them in the right direction. We are also

moving towards fixed fee pricing for ongoing services, with a service guarantee. For business owners, do you offer business services that help grow businesses? We assist business from start up through to growth phase and ultimate sale and retirement. Regular financial reporting, tax planning and regular meetings with clients and their bankers or other consultants such as lawyers achieve this. We have developed a package of services. I see our role as part of their management team, being a partnership beyond numbers. I see our role as helping clients in eight ways: • growing their business • increasing profitability • improving cash flow • protecting their assets • helping with succession planning and business sale • minimising tax • retiring with strong finances • leaving a legacy. Fifteen years ago Lisa Telford was a Sydney based corporate who discovered yoga. After practicing many different styles of yoga, she decided to quit her job and study Japanese yoga therapy. She now shares her extensive knowledge at her Moonee Beach Shopping Centre based studio, Yoga For The Seasons. Yoga is for people of all shapes, sizes, ages and abilities. Lisa explains the many health benefits …

hen did you first fall in love with all things yoga and decide that you wanted to make it your career? It was about 15 years ago. I was a corporate Sydney based executive who had loads of responsibilities, staff, stress – and I was miserable. I had an unhealthy lifestyle, plus a sore back and neck. As a sceptic, I went to try this odd thing called 'yoga', and after my first class I felt different ... happier, I didn’t crave bad foods, my body felt more energised, no pain, I handled stress better and I slept so well. I went back to another class and had the same feeling. To cut a long story short, I fell in love with how yoga made me feel and I wanted to know more – and in turn, to share it with others. So, two years after my first class I left my job, the suit and the stress to start a new lifestyle and yoga training and have never looked back. Where and when did you do your yoga teacher training? I teach a unique style of yoga. After practicing many different styles, I chose to study a dynamic Japanese form of yoga therapy that integrates traditional Hatha yoga with the meridian-based healing arts of Japan and China and the ‘Five Element Theory’. It offers a remarkably accurate and remedial system of healing and maintaining health and is acces-

But for me, the bottom line is includes a lot of formal breathing techniques people feel GREAT after a class. Mostly these classes are 1½ hours long and have great benefits. I have practiced all of them. However, I truly LOVE Japanese yoga. In a one hour class I feel great benefits; it works not just the body's structure but also the organ function, how I feel about myself and the world. As it is focused and is tailored to what I need on that day, I can arrive sore and tired and leave pain free and energised. to find a yoga studio in a shopping centre. But I think it's brilliant – you can do your grocery shopping at Coles, do an hour of yoga, feel great and then get a takeaway, or shop for clothes, or a gift, all with easy parking. Then pop down to beautiful Moonee Estuary for a swim. I have had the studio there for around 18 months. Before that I was teaching from the Moonee Beach hall, which sadly collapsed in a storm. Previously I opened a couple of studios in Sydney, including Yoga FX in North Sydney and Yoga TV in Mosman, which was an extension of a TV show we had on channel 10 and Foxtel. In addition, I taught corporate clients, ran workshops, retreats and taught in schools until I decided to escape and move back home to Coffs. I chose the name Yoga for the Seasons, as this yoga is aligned to Oriental medicine and the Five Element Theory which finds harmony and balance with our wellbeing by harmonising us with each season's attributes, allowing our minds, bodies and spirit to align to our natural state and the cyclical nature of things. Are the results of practicing yoga only physical? What about internal and mental? Yoga integrates all aspects of ourselves. We tend to think that we are our minds ... we are grander than that. I believe by turning up to a class you have started to heal yourself. It is important you take responsibility for your own health and wellbeing. I may say 'move' or 'do', but it is ultimately the individual that makes the change and 'does the work', so over the last 13 years I have seen a lot: from helping people suffering major mental health issues realise and use breathing to calm and take control of negative thoughts; to seeing people lose up to 48 kg in weight and watching their perspective and life change. Beachside Radiology Coffs Ocean Swims Considering the facts, it would be fair to label 34 year old father of two Greg Swan an ‘Ocean Swim Master’. After all, he has participated in every Coffs Ocean Swim since they began in1999 (count them – that’s 15!) and once had a plaster cast removed from his foot earlier than recommended, just to take part!

This year, Greg will again don the Speedos, cap and goggles and make like a fish for the Beachside Radiology Coffs Ocean Swims, to be held March 30.

compared to the old days. “I used to prefer the shorter 600 m swim, but as I’m getting older, a longer, slower effort seems to suit me better!” Having grown up in Coffs, Greg is no stranger to the sea, and our stunning coastline fuels his love for all things ‘active’. and it gives you a different perspective on this great place that we live. There is just something about being in the ocean. Anyone should just come down and give it a go - they will be hooked like me.”

It’s time to get those swimmers out and get into some training in preparation for the 2014 Beachside Radiology Coffs Ocean Swims on Sunday 30 March.

Event Director, Mick Maley said, “The Coffs Ocean Swims are an iconic community event for Coffs Harbour and couldn’t run without the generous support from sponsors, and we are thrilled to have Beachside Radiology on board again.”

Beachside Radiology is the naming sponsor for the fourth year, with a commitment to 2015. “It is great to see the numbers increase from year to year, and Jetty Beach is a beautiful location to enjoy the experience of ocean swimming. Beachside Radiology staff have committed to participating in the various swims and are looking forward to the challenge,” said Marketing Manager Michelle Gilbert. “The great thing about these events is that people do not have to be fast or elite to participate. It does not matter what their age or their ability is; as long as they come along, enjoy the experience and go home with a smile on their face, that‘s what it’s all about,” says Mick Maley. 46 coffs coast focus.

Kids' races were introduced in 2013 for the first time and proved to be very popular. Mums and dads took part in their events then cheered on their children, many of whom were taking part in their very first ocean swim. Organisers are hoping for the same nearperfect weather conditions that greeted the swimmers in 2013. Category placegetters in the 600 m and 2,000 m swims will all receive prizes, and there are also some terrific random draw prizes for all events including holiday packages and travel vouchers, thanks to the generous event sponsors.

Funds raised from the Coffs Ocean Swims will be distributed to local children's charities and the various Surf Clubs who help out with water safety. In 2013, the event raised over $13,000 for local community groups. The 2,000 m Beachside Radiology Coffs Ocean Swim is the third and final swim in the Swell Ocean Swim Series, which includes the Yamba Ocean Swim and the Evans Head Ocean Swim. Participants who take part in all three swims, get a T-shirt to commemorate their efforts and go in the draw to win one of three holiday packages. Entries are now open online. By Duncan Marchant, Coffs Coast Health Club INSPIRATIONAL FITNESS INTERVIEW

CAROLYN HEISE Mother of two and 42 year old Workplace Behaviour and Culture Consultant from Raleigh.

Thank you for such a positive response to last month’s story about the amazing Natalie Sykes. This month we are catching up with the pocket rocket Carolyn Heise and her Personal Trainer, Lee Kennedy, to hear her inspiring story.

W

hat is your exercise background, Carolyn?

I love good food, good wine and fun times. Luckily, I also love exercise! I have always had energy to burn and never regret exercise, even if it takes a bit of convincing to get me to the gym (thank you Lee). As an 'all or nothing' type of person, I usually push myself once I get started. I was very active as a child and teenager through doing many years of classical ballet, tennis, swimming club and water polo.

(about four times per week). I’m also addicted to quinoa (the super grain) and of course potato chips ... I just love them. If I don’t have the will power to resist the chip aisle in the supermarket, then I’ll be eating them in the car on the way home. I basically live by the philosophy that if I’m not prepared to kill an animal, then I’m not prepared to eat it.

These days, I try and do three to four classes plus one Personal Training session every week. My favourite classes are spin and pump. I don’t just exercise to justify a glass of wine or two; the key factor for me is that exercise is good for my head. It's a natural antidepressant and energiser. It's when I don't exercise that I become stressed, grumpy and don’t sleep so well.

What dream did you have for your future when you were 18? Well, I dreamt of being a flamboyant multi lingual, international Diplomat and travelling the world in style! However, as a 42 year old mother of two kids (17 years and 14 years), I have now lived around here for over 20 years and spend my time setting a healthy example for my kids. In December I married my beautiful partner of 11 years and as the Australian Government didn’t recognise our same sex union, we had a fabulous wedding in New Zealand with 80 friends and family instead.

So what does your diet look like? I have always been a self-termed fish-o-crit. I mostly eat a high protein vegetarian diet packed with vegetables, nuts, legumes and fruit ... plus fish

I have always worked hard and am very career focused, which for me means I have been the eternal student. I started out studying psychology and sociology at university and worked in health

promotion before going back to university (when my kids were very young) and studying a Bachelor of Nursing. Since then I have completed a Post Graduate Diploma of Public Health (with a major in Lifestyle Medicine and Leadership), a Certificate of Clinical Leadership and this year I aim to finish a Master of Business Administration. I am currently working as a Human Resource Consultant for the Local Health District, based at Coffs Harbour Health Campus. All in all, I wouldn’t change my family, career or my life on the Coffs Coast for anything. My reality is much better than my childhood dreams! Why did you select Lee as your personal trainer and to achieve your goals? He gets me, he supports me; he pushes me and makes

me laugh! I have been training with Lee for over two years and look forward to our catch ups each week. He is very patient with me; I have been known to swear at him more than once, especially if he makes me do burpees and he is always calm! He checks in with me between sessions - which keeps me motivated. Even though we know each other quite well now, Lee is always professional. He lives by example - he is fit and knowledgeable. I enjoy talking with him and learning more about things like training and exercise, nutrition, functional anatomy of the body and weight management. Working with Lee as my personal trainer gives me that extra nudge … which definitely helps with the wine and chip calories!

Aging Gracefully Time takes its toll on the human body in different ways and skin is no exception. In fact, the effects of excessive exposure of fair skin to the harsh Australian sun compounds the effects of aging. nitially, the changes are noted on the surface as blotchy, pigmented marks and fine blood vessels on the face. Later, skin begins to thin and sag due to collagen in the dermis (deeper part of skin) losing substance and the thinning of the fat layer beneath the skin. Facial Rejuvenation is now well established, using skin care and protection as well as lasers and surgical methods as the basic building blocks. Skin care is a must and refers to adequate moisturising of skin and avoidance of the use of drying agents including some soaps and cosmetics. Skin protection is the use of suitable clothes and sunblocks and the avoidance of overexposure to the sun.

I

“PhotoThermoLysis” (photo=light/ thermal=heat/lysis=destroy) is the principle by which lasers work to rejuvenate skin. Both “skin peeling” and “non skin peeling” methods are available and PhotoThermoLysis produces new collagen, with a resultant increase in skin tone (firmness) and a decrease in the sagging of skin. In addition, the skin looks and feels better too. “Dermal Fillers” are injections used to place synthetic collagen in the dermis and are appropriate for softening facial lines and grooves; in effect, this temporarily reproduces the effects of the laser treatment. There are various grades of fillers used in different parts of the face: Subcutaneous Fillers are “heavy

duty” fillers which are used beneath the skin to improve contour defects in the face and the rest of the body. The effect is very significant due to the volume and the nature of the filler used. Anti-wrinkle injections are also used to soften facial lines by partial paralysis of superficial facial muscles. Surgical methods of facial rejuvenation have become more sophisticated over the years, with the emphasis more on restoration rather than removal and/or tightening. In a facelift operation, where previously skin removal and tightening were the mainstays, now there is much less removal and much more restoration of tissues to the original site, reducing the effects of sagging and stretch.

I

thought it would be ideal if you could live here and you run a business you have a passion for,” Scott said. A passionate cyclist, Scott Bocking has just taken over Woodsey’s Wheels - a Woolgoolga institution in cycling, skating and sporting goods - from long-term owners Mal and Lesley Pitts. While Mal and Lesley plan a series of global cycling holidays, Scott is modernising store displays and bringing in new products and deals for customers. “I saw a bike shop for sale, and then I’m talking to a lender saying yes, you can do it,” Scott said. “A huge part of this is due to bcu, as it probably wouldn’t have happened otherwise,” he said.

Many dreams have strange beginnings, and Scott’s started when he snapped both cruciate ligaments in his knees during a decade as a ski instructor and his physio prescribed cycling as rehabilitation. Quickly addicted to cycling mountain trails, he soon changed careers, eventually becoming a national brand manager for a leading bicycle manufacturer. “The job became so much travel, I pitched to my boss, would it make much difference if I wasn’t in Sydney? A week after I began a trial of working remote, I’d bought a house in Mullaway, knowing I’d make it work.” He resigned the corporate jet set life after

his second son was born, working instead for Prime7 Coffs Harbour in media sales and supporting his wife Elise to grow her Woolgoolga pilates business. A decade in the bicycle business did not prepare him to get the wheels moving to buy a bike shop. "There is no online checklist that can tell you what to do and in which order. Your accountants and solicitors can help, but it was my bcu loans manager that made sense of it all." “I honestly couldn’t be happier with bcu – they took what seemed a really daunting process and my overriding questions about where do I start and made everything possible.” Scott is one of those exceptionally thorough individuals who compared what every lender offered. “The only way it is affordable for me to buy a shop with this much stock is to get a business loan payable over a long term. The big banks I

spoke to would only issue a loan for the term of the lease." “So within three or four years, I would be paying back the full amount, which is just crippling – doing it their way would cost over $800 a week, where a long term business loan is only $350 a week.” While the rates were attractive, it was the service bcu offered which clinched the deal for him. “I spoke to a guy in Coffs and we sat down and he said, ‘now go and do this.’ The next time, he’d say, ‘now do this’ and I spoke to the same guy every time, and he returned all my calls.” His bcu banker guided him every turn of the wheel and told him how to find experts when needed for conveyancing, leases, valuations and business plans. “There was never any pressure – you know, like we’re at this point now where we need to sign you up. I wasn’t committed until the day I signed the sale contract.”

Dr. Jeremy Allen The March Hear At Celtic Coastal Hearing we are hosting a bit of March Madness with ‘The March Hear’. To promote what better hearing can do for you, we are offering free hearing aid trials for the whole month of March. Often people say, "What will these hearing aids really do for me? So what better answer than to have a pair fitted to your individual hearing loss and try them out for a week at home! Hearing aids trials can help people assess the benefits of hearing aids and help bust some of the myths that are out there regarding hearing aids. "It’s always exciting commencing a trial with a patient and meeting up a week later to see how things have gone." Hearing trials are a pressure free way of finding out if you are ready for hearing aids because regardless of your hearing loss, unless you feel ready in your heart to ‘give it a fair go’ and wear the devices, then perhaps it may not be the right time to proceed with hearing aids. Motivation is highly linked to successful outcomes, so at Celtic Coastal Hearing we want to be assured that all our patients get the benefits that they seek from their hearing aids. So, hop along to us for a free trial or call us (02) 5617 6653 for a chat about it all!

Last year Living Doll’s Breea Gal and Lauren Vestey were chosen from hundreds of stylists across Australia to represent GHD Styling Team for 2013. The runway was better than ever in 2013, working with designers such as Romance was Born, Karla Spetic, Lisa Ho and Emma Mulholland, to name a few. The GHD Head Stylists were so impressed with Breea and Lauren’s creativity and performance in 2013, they were both specially requested back for 2014 - 2015 AUSTRALIAN FASHION WEEK. Since the Grand Opening of LIVING DOLL in Coffs Harbour in 2010, the Living Doll team have been pushing their creative talents to the limit, and their work has now caught the eye of world-wide fashion icons. We all know that the Coffs Coast is a beautiful area to live in, and we should be super proud of ourselves with the fact that we are an amazingly generous community to boot! We have many social events and an abundance of clubs and group activities to keep us all busy, but it is the consistent support that we give to our local charity events that never ceases to amaze me. here are so many, and they are all worthy. Somehow we manage to share the love and support them all. Lots of people do all sorts of things for which they get sponsored to raise money for a good cause. ‘The Son’ thinks he has come up with a winner. He suggested I might be sponsored for someone who comes up with most ridiculous sayings, which mean absolutely nothing! To this I replied, "HOGWASH", but to be honest ... I don’t even know what that means, or why I say it! An event with a difference was staged recently called ‘Rock and Ride’. It was created to raise awareness for Headspace Coffs Harbour, which helps young people who are going through tough times. A group of 19 high profile celebrities rode into the city centre via Harley Davidson Motorbikes. It was led by Grinspoon’s front man and local North Coast V-Twins ambassador, Phil Jamieson. The group of celebrities got to perform a few songs and were involved with local activities run by Headspace Coffs Harbour. The BWN (Business Women’s Network) is starting this year off with a solid networking breakfast. Not the type where you can hide behind your computer, but one that puts YOU out there, face to face - the type of networking that builds lasting relationships and forges professional connections. So if you want to get serious about boosting your business, book your seat for Thursday, February 20 at Novotel Pacific Bay Resort. One of the biggest local and most outstanding charity events is our very own Dancing with the Coffs Coast Stars. It is staged at the Coffs C.ex and packs out every single year. This 52

dancing event, as per usual, was nothing short of sensational. Eight high profile people paired up with some of our finest local dance schools to master a dance to compete in this money spinning competition. Fiona Foulkes from the Cancer Council remarked that the dancers and their teachers put in 110% effort, which resulted in the raising of almost $100,000 dollars for the Cancer Council. The volunteer committee should be proud of themselves for helping to make this event so successful. The Highest Fundraising Award was presented to Steve Allen, along with his fiancée, Wendy. The People’s Choice Award went to Vicky Hunter, with partner Graham Muggleton. But when the judges made their final decision, it was Nicole Martin and her partner, Carol Young, who took out The Judges' Choice award. Everyone was a winner, that’s for sure! The Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery was the venue for the ‘Hope for Haiti’ just recently. No wonder it was a full house! It was such a special night, filled with awesome music provided by the sensational Belinda Ward. The songstress also entertained the guests by singing alongside her father, Dr Harvey Ward, who is one of Coffs Harbour’s well known gynaecologists. But boy, can he sing! Everyone had an amazing time, and funds were raised for a great cause. An event which was held over the summer holidays was presented by the Coffs Harbour Library. It was the hugely popular Holiday Story time in The City Square. This has been running for the last three years and this year attracted more than 250 children. Coffs Library Manager Enzo Accadia commented that it is a great way for parents and guardians to come along with their children and enjoy a great story. Vouchers could be won simply by dressing up as your

favourite storybook character. I attended one of these sessions (not in a costume as ‘The Cat in The Hat’... I might add!), with a friend and her young son. We checked into one of the nearby cafés, where we could watch the little one enjoy the tales. It’s coming close to the last of the popular Sawtell Summer Sessions. Lots of entertainment, and the crowds turned up to enjoy the luxury of the street being closed, enjoy a meal at one of the local eateries and peruse the stores on First Avenue. This time it was Le Dãin Designs and First Avenue Boutique's time to ‘peacock their stores’. The two boutiques staged mini Fashion Events. Keli was her usual outstanding quirky self, with fabulous fashion and accessories. Le Dãin Designs rolled out the red carpet to the medium strip, jewelled up the girls and let them strut their stuff! Fashion for this mini catwalk event was provided by the In Touch Boutique section at House of Le Dãin. The grand finale for this show was the vibrant and super talented Christina Monneron from Kulturithmik, who wowed the crowd all jewelled up Cuban style. The final session, which is on Thursday 13 March, will star Sawtell’s Post Mistress Janemaree, who will be shaving all of her hair off! This is for the Leukaemia Foundations ‘World’s Greatest Shave’. She is the major organiser who aided by the Sawtell Chamber of Commerce and local businesses stage The Sawtell Summer Sessions. She is aiming to raise $5,000. Good luck, Janemaree. Sawtell RSL was the venue for a ‘Hot Havana Night’. Talk about hot; it was sizzling! To warm you up, an intro class got you ready to move and groove to the hot Cuban beat. Entertainment was provided by performances from world class Cuban Dance Masters. There

was live Afro-Cuban drumming and music by some of Australia’s best percussionists, led by Gustavo Cereijo of Chukale. Talk about vibrant - you seriously needed all the energy in the world to keep up! This was part of a weekend camp hosted by Kulturithmik, which consisted of Afrekete Afro-Cuban Dance and Music filled with workshops from Australia’s and NZ’s Cuban artists, definitely something different, definitely fun and exhilarating. Grab the girls and head on over to the Novotel Coffs Harbour Pacific Bay on March 7. This will be for the Camp Quality International Women’s Day. Once there, you can sit back and relax and enjoy a delicious lunch in a beautiful setting while hearing from two successful and inspiring women who are leaders in their industries. Karen Stocks, who is Australia’s first Managing Director of Twitter, and lead singer with Australian rock band Baby Animals, Suze DeMarchi, will be speaking and giving a brief solo event. When we go back to the topic of raising funds for charities and the use of wise old sayings, there is the oldie but a goodie: "Charity should begin at home". Well yes ... this is true, but that needed to be explained to my teenager, who thinks, wait for it, "Money grows on trees"! He had completely misinterpreted this, and much to his disgust found out that there is a fine line between the funding of looking after the family home and the wellbeing of the family and, well for instance, lining - or in my case embellishing - ‘The Son's’ pockets! I mumbled another old saying, suggesting we should count our pennies! He had absolutely no idea what I was yapping about … here is to speaking with a forked tongue. Carole, Le Dãin Designs.

Karen Stocks Managing Director - Twitter Australia Twitter is one of the biggest names in the world, with the 140 character based phenomenon nomenon ational bringing us information in real-time. March 7, Camp Quality is hosting an International n Stocks, Women’s Day Lunch at Pacific Bay Resort, where local business woman Karen ckets are Managing Director of Twitter Australia, is one of two high-profile speakers. Tickets only $45 and include an afternoon of inspiration with your two course lunch! the last time we spoke, you were the Head of Google and Youtube … where is your career at today? I am the Managing Director of Twitter Australia. September last year I moved from Google to take on this new role and to open the office in Australia. My focus is to build a world class organisation in Australia for Twitter; this gives me the opportunity to broaden my experiences and responsibilities. Please share your career journey … take us back to the start. Where did it all begin? When I went to university, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do - I still say I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up. Because I loved maths and I am very practical, I decided to do a Bachelor of Financial Administration. When I finished university, I started working at Vodafone. I was very fortunate enough to spend several years in the finance team and then move into the Customer Strategy team and develop a new set of skills. After 12 years at Vodafone, I took a break to spend some time with my family and do a Masters of Business Administration (MBA). When I returned to work, I started working for Google, spent six years there, and now I am at Twitter. Interestingly, the companies I have worked for didn’t exist when I started university. With a hugely successful career, I picture you on international flights, living out of a suitcase inhabiting fancy hotel suites? Is this the case … what does a typical day in the office look like for you? Having an international career has both its ups and downs. I love travelling, seeing new countries, meeting new people and constantly learning. On the downside, it’s hard to be away from my family, and I have to manage my energy carefully. I don’t really have an average day. Some are wonderful 9 to 5 days when I spend most of my day meeting with my team and clients. Others are more tumultuous, having international conference calls at 2am in the morning or travelling to three continents in 30 hours. How have you seen marketing change in the past decade and for you, what’s the most exciting thing about being a part of this change? Marketing, alongside all other industries, has been profoundly disrupted by technology in the last decade. Most of the

consumer electronics and services we take for granted today are barely a decade old. On March 21, 2014, Twitter will celebrate its 8th anniversary! Today, almost every kind of business involves technology, so in essence, every company is a technology company. It’s important for women to be technology-minded in general and work with others to determine how technology can best help them address the business problems they are trying to solve. Technology is giving way to many new jobs, such as the ‘Chief Marketing Technologist’ in marketing, as well as a slew of new jobs in social media. So there’s never been a better time to work in marketing, with technology absolutely critical to this sector. As consumers have access to technology, specifically smart phones, the communication cycle has fundamentally changed. People don’t need to wait for news cycles to find out about what’s happening in their world, it’s real time. This means the marketers need to respond quickly and cannot plan with certainty events 12 months in advance. Flexibility and adaptability are essential skills to be able to respond in the moment and in context.

There are many stereotypes that women in business struggle against male counterparts when climbing the corporate ladder… what is your view or personal experience with this? I have faced challenges and situations where my natural abilities or style have not resonated with others. I worked hard to better identify these situations and create other opportunities to succeed. Additionally, I have worked with mentors to help me better navigate and deal with these situations. My advice is to find a company with values and culture that aligns with you. When you’re in an environment that you are comfortable in, you can perform at your best and you will find more opportunities become available.

What advice do you have for women with young families who are ide gs on al g, looking to open the career tin ke Mar es ri st du in r he door in a year or two? The short-form format also is particularly well suited to mobile use and drives faster exchange of information and ideas in the moment. We’ve stayed true to our roots for being the quickest way for people to know what’s happening right now, but our users have really found some great ways to discover great content, connect with others and express themselves, too. A recent example is how Aussies have taken to Twitter to interact with three leading TV shows - My Kitchen Rules, The Block and The Biggest Loser - to find out the latest TV plot twists, share their thoughts with other fans, and even ask questions in real-time to the TV stars, all in real-time, only on Twitter.

My one point of advice would be every time you say “Yes” to something you are saying “No” to something else. Be clear on what your tradeoffs are and be comfortable with them, or at least accept them. You’re not only a career woman, you’re also a mother and wife … what do you enjoy most about living on the Coffs Coast? Describe your perfect family day … The Coffs Coast has amazing weather, beaches and spectacular outdoors. My perfect day is to get my family and dogs into a canoe and paddle around Moonee Beach. I also love catching up with my mum or sister for a coffee and a pedicure. Twitter, Facebook or Instagram? - Twitter! You can follow me on Twitter at @KazStocks. Tickets: Camp Quality - 6651 4486.

What do you enjoy most about working on the Coffs Coast? George and I moved to Coffs Harbour for a sea change in 2004. We thought we would give it 12 months. And nine years later, we have made it home. Coffs is a fabulous place; we have the luxury of free parking and secluded beaches and a great community. We live in a town that people want to holiday in! I don’t think it gets much better than that.

As a local business woman with a background in Human Resources and Coaching (government and private) I know that the Coffs Coast is brimming with talented and committed people who want to make a difference. Finding and keeping the right people is the key to any business. What services do I provide that will help your business? Staff Recruitment & Selection - I manage this process by reviewing applications, carrying out short listing and assisting with interviews. I provide advice and assistance to make the process a breeze and ensure you get the right person for the job!

Tell us about Coffs Hire: Coffs Hire was formed when we amalgamated our two previous businesses, All Transport & Fabrication and Coffs Harbour Containers.

• Staff Performance Appraisals that Identify Career Goals and Appropriate Training - Having identified career paths for your employees, assists with staff morale and increased staff retention.

Coffs Hire now have a modern fleet of Shipping Containers, Portable Toilets, Scissor Lifts, VMS Sign Boards, Portable Showers, Coolrooms, Telehandlers, Portable Buildings, Forklifts, And various Car Trailers. Servicing 300 km radius of the Coffs Coast on all long term hires. We also specialise in used Container Sales, with over 150 in stock. What do you like about your job? Being an owner/ operator, I get to enjoy so many aspects of the business. From book keeping in the office and organising the staff, to throwing on the hard hat and steel cap boots and heading out in the trucks. But it would be nice to not have to wear fluro safety shirts EVERY day! P.S. - My ‘room mate’ George and I got married by a Midget Elvis in Las Vegas on New Year’s Eve! I guess I’m not just the ‘room mate’ any more!

• Mediation and Conflict Resolution - Relationship Management. • I operate as a completely outsourced HR Department for your business - so you don’t have to worry. •

I also specialise in Coaching for Women either working or returning to work - after time away from the workforce, perhaps raising a family, returning can be a daunting experience. Once you’re back, juggling commitments is an ongoing challenge. As a working mother of three, I know that Coaching can help to regain your confidence.

Beyond Now Solutions

What is the history behind your business? My business started out with a chair, a desk and an empty filing cabinet and me in a small office in town in 1999. Since then we have evolved or ‘grown up’ to be a boutique business advisory service. In the beginning we provided the basic staples – accounting, taxation, compliance. Now 15 years on, our focus is on small to medium businesses and not for profit organisations and providing business advice, planning, problem solving, trouble shooting, cloud based solutions for business efficiency – we still provide the compliance components (tax, financial reporting etc) but we find that if the planning and advice is right all the way through the year, these matters are dealt with in real time rather than at a point in time after the event. It provides the client with much more value for money and the ability to significantly improve their business and lifestyle outcomes.

being a good support for your partner. Kids flourish when parents are on the same page. What is the best piece of business advice that you can offer to others? Do something that you love and have a big reason for doing it! The big reason keeps you focused and motivated on your difficult days. Give of your time and money to others – it’s amazing the things that can happen as a result. Don’t be scared to ask, “Why?” What was your earlier career? What experience has brought you to where you are today? I worked and trained in Sydney in a Chartered Accounting firm. My favourite part of my job was solving business and taxation problems for people. When we relocated back to Coffs (I was born here) I decided that I really wanted to work with people in business and be involved in various businesses across the Coast. This led me to invest in different businesses and to take up various Directorship roles (both paid and voluntary). This wide experience really provides added benefits to my clients.

Why did you decide to take the plunge and swing open the doors of your business back in the day? I always had a vision for the sort of business I wanted – I wanted it to be personal, reflect my values and who I am and provide some real, measurable benefits to my clients. I also wanted to have a team of people who loved coming to work and cared for each other. I didn’t always have the name Beyond Now Solutions. It came to me at about 2am one morning almost 5 years after I started the business, but I knew that it reflected exactly how I feel about business – looking beyond today for better solutions and outcomes.

With the enhancement of technology over the past decade, how has this impacted your business? I am a big believer in leveraging up time by using technology. This is why I have invested time and money to research and understand cloud based solutions for myself and my clients. I have found that this discussion alone with business owners and not for profit organsisations has added significant value to their outcomes.

You also have a family; how do you juggle it all? Like my clients, I have built a business – and some days it’s a hard slog! I have a husband and three children. When the children were younger, it was a juggle, and I did sometimes suffer from ‘mother’s guilt’. I think the key to it is consistency and planning and having and

aving recently moved from Maroubra to the Coffs Coast, Michael Grieve has recently taken up the post of Economic & Business Development Manager with Bellingen Shire Council and brings with him a wealth of experience. I sat down with Michael to get to know a bit more about him.

Urunga is close to Bellingen, which has a great cultural and artistic vibe. I also love the climate of the Mid North Coast, the beaches, and the rainfall (having grown up in a drought prone part of NSW - Murrurundi in the Upper Hunter.) In your new role as Economic & Business Development Manager, what will be some of your priorities for 2014, and what vision do you have for the future of the Bellingen Shire? Over the coming months Bellingen Shire Council will review our progress against the current Economic and Tourism Plan which ends next year and within that, chart a future path in terms of tourism and economic development.

Welcome, Michael! I’ve been told that you’ve worked on some important tourism projects in the past; can you tell us a little about them? Well, it sounds like Bellingen Shire Council has scored itself a seasoned professional! What other experience do you bring with you? I’ve just moved up from Maroubra, where I was actively involved as a trainer and life saver with Maroubra Surf Club. Prior to this I lived in Tamworth, where I had a couple of guest houses and horse riding schools. I moved to Tamworth from Mullumbimby NSW, where I was President of the Byron Shire Tourism Association for six years. I also worked for National Parks and Wildlife as their Visitor Centre Manager at Cape Byron for five years. What attracted you to the Coffs Coast? I’ve owned a place at Urunga for five years. I was drawn there because it’s a beautiful, unspoilt, coastal town. I love the fact that

Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium Places still available in Term One for Early Childhood Music Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium has been providing Early Childhood Music (ECM) Education in Coffs Harbour since 1997. Many of the talented musicians we have coached and developed over the years began their musical journey through our ECM program. We provide this for students aged 2 - 5 years of age and are now able to offer a dedicated program for children aged from 9 months to 2 years of age. Music is the universal language and is recognised to be an essential part of all children’s education, developing their listening skills, aural and visual memory, concentration, self-expression and creativity. Our Early Childhood Music programs also develop social interaction and emotional growth through expression in a communal, group environment. Following Early Childhood music, we provide preparatory music lessons in our Rhythm Makers and Keyboard Group programs. These develop the skills already learned in Early Childhood Music and focus them into specific musical instrumentation before a child chooses what they would really love to study musically. The Conservatorium is proud of our tradition of musical excellence, and Early Childhood Music is the beginning of a journey that develops a lifelong love of music.

We often come across modern, funky, bedazzled websites and print ads that excite visually but offer nothing past the surface schlock. They’re the print or web equivalent of a great arse in tight jeans but there’s nothing going on upstairs. Know what I mean? Chances are it’s the copywriting - or lack of it - letting the team down. Many businesses are happy to invest in design, but when it comes to copywriting, they’re happy to leave it to second cousin Curtis. Big mistake. Here’s why. Good design attacts attention; good copywriting keeps it. You’ve held out the visual equivalent of a Stop sign, you’ve got their attention, now you’ve got to keep it. Good copywriting converts enquiry to interest, and interest to action. Good copywriting leads the reader to where you want them to go: to the Read More, to the Call to Action, to the Sale, to the Pay Now, to the Sign Here ... Google loves copywriting. Good, original copywriting on your website is the single most important factor in your Google PageRank ranking. Period. Forget link-farming and backlinking and keyword stuffing and AdWords and whatever else some SEO huckster is trying to sell you. Copywriting, done right, is Google gold. Want a dollar value? Here’s a story: Copywriter Martin Conroy wrote a subscription offer for the Wall Street Journal which compared the successes of two (fictitious) school friends. The value of that subscription offer - that is, dollars in the bank as a direct result of that copywriting - has been put at more than $1 billion. A billion! Worth putting pen to paper, or what? Good copywriting is exceptional value for money. Look at the advertising and communications of most major brands, and you’ll notice they use the same copy on dozens of different promotions across all different media: on their website, on their newsletters, on their packaging, on their promotions and advertorials. Whether you’ve written it yourself or employed a pro, that’s great value: write it once, and use it again and again and again. Besides: second cousin Curtis is a doofus.

Nextgen Leaders & The Edge Commercial

C

herie, you’re a busy little bee. Tell us a little bit about your background and your day to day professional life? My background is in corporate real estate, and I’m currently the manager of the commercial asset management department for The Edge Commercial. After completing my Property Economics degree, my career launched with large property trust and fund managers, managing national property portfolios, including CBD high-rise office blocks, regional shopping centres, large industrial warehouses and service stations all around the country. I have been lucky enough to work with some of the best asset managers, solicitors, facility managers and companies this country has to offer. I feel very blessed for the start I have had in my property career. I’m now on the committee of management board with Chamber of Commerce, a founding member and current chair of nextgen leaders, and I also volunteer for a number of local charities - I love being busy and giving back to the community I live in! As a Commercial Asset Manager for The Edge Commercial, what does this role entail, and why did you choose this profession? Growing up out west, I was always planning to return to the country and be a rural valuer; but, after completing my uni degree I was head hunted by one of QLD’s most successful property trust fund managers, and I was destined for a corporate career from that moment on. I have an instinctive passion for how property portfolios should be managed. I treat assets under management as though they were my own, and my clients’ reap the rewards as a result. With this experience, I have been able to assist The Edge in building a strong portfolio of assets under management. My role with The Edge involves ensuring our clients’ commercial, industrial and retail property investments are managed to the 66 coffs coast focus.

I like to think I’m one of the lucky few that get to say “I love what I do!” Your other hat is shared with Coffs Chamber of Commerce and nextgen leaders … tell us a little bit about this new young professional group? Nextgen leaders is a fantastic initiative, established in 2012 with the objective of providing young Gen X and Gen Y professionals on the Coffs Coast with networking and development opportunities. Nextgen leaders encourages its members to showcase their amazing skill sets, passions and capabilities and work collaboratively to make this city the best it can be. Nextgen leaders’ membership was established to assist young professionals aged 18 - 40 years. We host monthly gatherings in the last week of each month, with everyone over 18 years welcome to attend. Some of the professional speakers we have had join us to share their tips on how to reach the next level and achieve your goals, include: Dan Flynn (founder of Thank You Water & Young Victorian of the Year); Olympian, James Magnussen; Anthony Slater from LinkedIn; Trent Gunthorpe from American Express; Karen Stocks from Twitter Australia; Sebastian Terry from 100 Things - just to name a few. We also provide our members with the opportunity to have their views heard and actioned where possible - like helping to lobby Council into changing their position to proceed with the Jetty Foreshores concept plan and supporting the NAB Coffs Cycle Challenge event every August (a great revenue raiser for the local economy and charities that benefit from the proceeds). When to bring in an Expert

We continue our series of interviews that explore the secrets to our clients’ success. I spoke to Lea Allen about the lessons she and her husband, Tim, have learned in establishing their quality butchery, The Butchers Bullevard, with a new landlord.

Mel: What brought you and Tim to Coffs Harbour? Lea: Tim’s a butcher, and we were looking to buy a butcher's shop. We’re both from Dubbo but when we saw Palm Butcheries on the market, we jumped at it and moved up here in September 2011. Mel: So, why change the name to The Butcher’s Bullevard? Lea: I had felt for some time that we needed to better understand where our meat was coming from. We decided to change our supply strategy. We found local company Mayfield Farm Pork to supply us with beautiful pork with no added hormones and started sourcing our lamb and beef from a supplier in Inverell who represents farmers in this region.

We always welcome our visitors with open arms and put on our Sunday best, but sadly our efforts and our manners are not always reciprocated. In a few cases I was saddened to see blatant rudeness and a lack of respect as shown by a small number of tourists toward some of the business owners in our village. It's a shame that it takes just one or two to detract from the pleasure that the holiday season brings. It almost calls for another initiative to follow the 'support small business' campaign that proclaims 'be kind to small business'.

various goods and services. As we remember

People in small business are the heart of the economy and local community, and a healthy small business sector means a strong Australian economy. There are almost 2 million small businesses in Australia that provide jobs to almost half the workforce and provide a community connection that big business simply cannot. Small businesses are usually operated by families who spend countless hours doing their own accounts, stock ordering, HR, IT, warehouse, transport, cleaning, maintenance and media, as well as being managers and staff on a 7 day roster. Small business lacks the market power of big business in dealing with suppliers and 68 coffs coast focus.

the government. Economies of scale allow big business with specialised HR and accounting departments to meet the cost of complying with a myriad of regulations far more easily than small business. We will, however, continue to work hard and sometimes against the odds, as we believe in what we do and have a passion about our to shop locally and support small business,

We wanted a new name and a new image to fit with our new position as a supplier of local, high quality meats. The timing was right, because the centre was changing from Palms to Coffs Central. Mel: Was the change over easy? Lea: No. When Coles left the centre, our business suffered. We had to lay off staff. My second daughter was born that February, and I had to come back to work in April and bring her with me. We did it tough. Mel: How did you manage financially? Lea: We approached Gowings, the new landlord, and explained that without their help we would not be able to stay in the centre. Gowings was fantastic: very supportive.

Mel: Were you worried about negotiating a lease with a new landlord at such a vulnerable time? Lea: We were worried. So, we hired a leasing consultant, and it’s the best decision we have ever made. She arranged for a valuation on the business, which enabled us to demonstrate to Gowings what we could reasonably pay and remain in business. It made the negotiations so much easier – less emotional and focused on finding a win for both parties. Mel: What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned through this business transition? Lea: I have learned that if you don’t have knowledge of an important aspect of your business you should bring in an expert – not try to wing it on your own. Our business is where it is today because we got expert advice.

we should also remember to be kind to small business and respect the people who put in the many hours of work that small business operations require and the economic odds that continue to challenge them. ur passionate educators develop individual programs tailored specifically to each child, while using their experience to inspire curiosity and combine individual and group activities to ignite your child's learning potential. Our natural outdoor environment invites open ended interactions, spontaneity, risk taking, exploration, discovery and connection with nature. We try to create a connection with the real world, taking children on nature walks, catching bugs, making mud pies and linking our learning and exploration to the broader community. The families that have enrolled with us have commented on the spacious outdoor environment and the opportunities we give children to engage with living creatures in the natural world. Our chicken coop is being built at present, as we begin educating children about the life cycle of the chicken. This provides so many opportunities for learning across all areas of the Early Years Learning Framework curriculum.

Educators play a significant role in offering children direct experiences with nature and being positive role models. They not only wonder, but also respect and care for our natural environment. This fundamental learning with educators is essential as children begin to understand sustainability, the systems that support life and why caring for the land, plants and animals and ourselves matters. We are looking forward to meeting the families, children and community of Boambee, Toormina, Sawtell, Bonville, Coffs Harbour and surroundings. We invite everyone to come in for a chat and take a tour of Treehouse Early Years Learning Centre! We also have positions available at Gardiner Avenue Children’s Centre located close to the CBD of Coffs Harbour. Our educators are experienced in early childhood education and understand that children learn best when they are engaged and interested in what they do. We are strong believers in that knowing children as individuals is a key factor in promoting quality learning. Come in for a visit, and we can show you what we have to offer!

KERRIE FRASER & IRENE HARTSUYKER

hat were your feelings when your husband first went into politics? Irene A mixture of excitement and apprehension. Our boys were only four and six, and I was nervous about them growing up in the public eye, but it hasn’t been an issue at all. Kerrie I didn’t have any real fears. Even before we were married, we were both involved in politics. Andrew was very involved in community activities – Apex, cricket club, show ground trust and he was Chairman of the Australia Day Awards Committee. I was not surprised when both the Labor Party and the then Country Party asked him to stand; politics was a natural progression for Andrew. And did your lives change? Irene Luke’s busy role and the fact that he was away a lot did change our lives. We were out most Friday and Saturday nights, which meant we needed babysitters – having both sets of parents here certainly helped. Things involving the boys often had to be discussed on the phone instead of in person. And, suddenly everyone knew us; before we had always had a low profile. We attended our first official function, the Remembrance Day ceremony in Coffs, November 11, 2001, the day after Luke was first elected; when we sang the National Anthem, I was completely overwhelmed with emotion. The realisation of the important role Luke was taking on and, that we were both now representing our country, was a very special, life-changing moment for me. Kerrie Because Andrew had been so involved with Apex, I was used to being busy but it was hard to get used to being in the public eye and remembering so many names and faces not only in Coffs, but Australia wide. Has political life seen you doing things and meeting people you would never have imagined? Irene Over the past 12 years I’ve met a lot of interesting people - some particularly memorable. We sat at the same table for dinner 70 coffs coast focus.

with Major General Michael Jeffrey when he was Governor General, and his wife, Marlene. I have also met General Peter Cosgrove, who is to be our next GG. I was particularly excited to meet Prince Frederik and Princess Mary of Denmark when they visited Australia shortly after they were married. They shook hands and spoke to all of the 200 people in the room. Mary was delightful - just so natural. Kerrie I had the privilege to speak with the Queen and Prince Philip when they opened State Parliament in 1992. She asked about the recent damage Coffs had just suffered from the tail end of a cyclone, and she fondly recalled her visit to Coffs in 1970. I will never forget that. I also never imagined that I would have to speak in public. Last year I opened the View Club Conference in Coffs. There were 600 members, and it was the largest gathering I have ever addressed. I have also judged baby competitions, art shows and cooking. I really enjoy doing all that. What lessons have you learned along the way? Irene Most importantly to be flexible – things can change at any time you have to go with it! Luke has got busier, particularly lately with his new roles, and I’ve learned to lock in family things and other important dates early to make sure he’s able to attend. Both of our sons were actually born on budget night, and for the past 12 years he’s not been home for either of our son’s birthdays. But that’s part of the job; I’ve learned to accept it. Kerrie I’ve had to learn to juggle family and public life. We didn’t have any family here in town to support us with babysitting and advice. Instead, I’ve learned to value my friends. And yes, to be flexible. Life in politics is always changing; you have to go with the flow. Also, people can be cruel around Election Day if they don’t agree with your politics - I’ve learned not to get too upset and to respect other people’s opinions. It would be a sad world if we didn’t. I enjoy being a politician’s wife. It’s hard work sometimes, but I love meeting people, and we live in such a wonderful place. We know you as public figures, but would

RFBI C o f f s

H a r b o u r

133 Years in the Provision of Care The Freemasons’ Benevolent Institution, as it was originally known, was founded in 1880 to assist the poor and needy during a time when there were no government funded social welfare programs. Since then, the Royal Freemasons Benevolent Institution (RFBI), as the organisation is now known, has been assisting those in need and today is a leading aged care provider. Below, Alex Shaw, CEO of the RFBI, discusses how the past 133 years has shaped the organisation and what the future holds.

he Beginning The RFBI was built on the philosophy that "For the sake of the poor - of our own obligations - and of the credit of the Order, it is hoped that a generous and universal support will be accorded to an Institution whose function will be to provide succor in distress and relief in necessity.” This philosophy is still the backbone of the RFBI today. We aim to provide support and assistance of the highest calibre to those who need it. The RFBI originally assisted needy masons and senior citizens with monthly payments through its Annuity Scheme. The Royal Freemasons’ Benevolent Institution’s Annuity Scheme is still in practice, and we have added to this a Benevolence Assistance Program, where special cases of need are identified, assessed and assistance granted. In the aftermath of World War II as social services were slowly brought into practice, the Freemasons’ Benevolent Institution assistance became less essential but nevertheless, a need remained. The organisation purchased and operated Shortland Hospital for 30 years, before venturing into the provision of Aged Care in 1972, which is now the primary mainstay of the organisation as we operate Aged Care Facilities across 23 sites in NSW and ACT. In 1984, the Royal prefix was added to the title of Freemasons’ Benevolent Institution when the Queen, acknowledging the work of the FBI over the past 100 years, granted the use of the term Royal. Since then, our organisation has been known as the Royal Freemasons’ Benevolent Institution or RFBI. Provision of Aged Care In 1968 local ambulance man Edgars Lideman identified the need for a Retirement Village in Newcastle and approached local businessman and prominent Mason, Albert Hawkins, for 72 coffs coast focus.

a donation. He donated 45 acres to the FBI and the first building, Rose Court, comprising 54 Independent Living Units, was completed in 1972. This site is now home to one of the RFBI’s primary Aged Care facilities, comprising 131 aged care beds, 207 self-care units and 10 Community Aged Care Packages (CACPs). Since this time the RFBI has responded to the needs of Australia’s ageing population, and we have diversified our caring and benevolent role through the establishment of aged care facilities throughout regional NSW, including the Village at Mackays Road in Coffs Harbour, which was founded in 1990 and currently comprises 78 residential care facility together with 50 Self Care units. Our organisation now owns and operates Nursing Homes, Hostels and Retirement Villages and cares for over 2,600 elderly residents, including 78 at RFBI Coffs Harbour Masonic Village. History - The RFBI in Coffs Harbour In 1988, local Masons approached the RFBI with the view of establishing a local Masonic Village. Following this, in 1989 a local committee was formed and along with the RFBI, planning commenced immediately, with on site preparations, plans, and eventual building activities. In 1990, the first 30 Independent Living units, together with a village hall, were completed and officially opened by Mr. Matt. Singleton, Member for Coffs Harbour. The original nine bed Residential Care hostel was officially opened by the RT. WOR. BRO Frank M Jeffree OAM. P.D.G.M. in 1991. The Hostel was extended by a further nine beds, four years later. In 2001 a further 20 units were added, and the Village hall was extended, to cater for the increase in residents. Late 2002 saw the completion of a new 60 bed residential care facility. This facility was officially

opened in 2003 by the Honorable Julie Bishop, then Minister for Ageing. Facilities At Coffs Harbour Masonic Village, we offer a 78bed, low care accredited Residential Care Facility, which includes a separate 15-bed respite specific wing, and 50 Independent Living units. Within both Residential Care hostels, accommodation incorporates ensuite bathrooms, ceiling fans and ducted air conditioning. All our common areas within both hostels are airconditioned. We provide lounge rooms in each wing of both facilities. Catering is on site, with main meals served in our large dining room. The menu changes seasonally, and we welcome resident input. Visitors are also able to enjoy a meal with residents should they wish, at a minimal charge. The Village also includes 50 Independent Living units, each with two double bedrooms with built in wardrobes. There are both upstairs and downstairs units, across four blocks, with secure entry to each block. There are also two single story villas. All the Independent Living units have lock-up single garages, an attached laundry and a vital call system. Our quiet and peaceful surrounds offer maintained gardens and spacious grounds, incorporating a village hall and BBQ area. Activities and Lifestyle The Independent Living units have an active residents committee, and various functions are held throughout the year in the well equipped Village hall. Our residential care facilities have spacious activity areas, providing a relaxed atmosphere for our residents, with the option of participating in a wide range of activities such as: concerts, fashion parades, parties, shuffleboard and carpet bowls competitions. We also offer hairdressing services, podiatry and physiotherapy on site. Coffs Harbour Masonic Village also owns an 11

seater bus, which is available to all residents for outings, shopping trips and so on. Local Information Coffs Harbour Masonic Village is located on the beautiful Mid Coast of New South Wales, boasting sun bleached beaches to the east and the national Parks to the North, West and South. Coffs Harbour has many great attractions, activities and restaurants. The spectacular Dorrigo National Park and Solitary Islands Marine Park are in close proximity. This year the RFBI at Bellingen won the national award of The Aged Care Standards and Accreditation Agency for ‘Environmental Management / Living Environment’. The Future of the RFBI I believe the RFBI’s primary role in the provision of aged care will continue to expand in the future as the population ages. Our main goal is to provide support to the ageing population to allow them to age with dignity and to cater for the special needs of the elderly, including those people suffering from dementia related diseases. In the last year the RFBI has donated $100,000 to a special dementia research project, undertaken by Griffith University, towards the treatment and care of the disease. The RFBI is a public company and not part of the Freemasons Grand Lodge. Although the organisation shares the Masonic philosophy of helping those in need, the staff and volunteers at any of the Villages do not need to be Mason’s to be employed by the company. Similarly residents do not need to have any Masonic affiliation to receive care at any of our 23 Villages. As an organisation founded on the principles for providing care to those in need, the RFBI will continue to support anyone that needs support. For additional information on the RFBI at Coffs Harbour Masonic Village, please contact the General Manager, Martin Bunyan on (02) 6650 2200.

Signature Floors would like to congratulate Fiona and Simon McCredie on the successful opening of their new Coffs Harbour Carpet Court store.

What is the history behind our local Carpet Court store? Carpet Court began operation in Coffs Harbour over 20 years ago. Back in the day, the business operated from the old site at Park Beach Road next to McDonald’s North. Simon and Fiona acquired the business in December 2005 with other business partners, knowing very little about the flooring industry at the time. In August 2011, Simon and Fiona acquired the business in its entirety. As it stands, Carpet Court is the largest flooring retailer, with presence in all states of Australia with over 200 stores. s a 4ft 11, 14 year old, Bruce Hibbard started at the bottom of the ladder. With no modern luxuries like telephones and computer systems or any devices that strongly assist in planning and production, Bruce was thrown in to assisting his father on site as a labourer. As he grew in height, so did his skills, as he became successfully qualified in all aspects of building a home from digging the footings, laying foundations, erecting frames, mixing cement and painting walls. It was through

determination persistence and sheer determination, visionary attitude that led to the company’s success in 1966, with Bruce personally building the home himself. Hibbards now constructs new homes in six regions: Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Tamworth, Dubbo, Mudgee and the newly ventured town of Orange. With over 200 homes to be built in the 2013/2014 period, Hibbards plan to elevate their position within the top NSW builders list, coming in at number 14 in the 2012/2013. “This is such a fantastic result of all the hard efforts

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS BEHIND THE SCENES BEFORE A HIBBARD HOME STARTS CONSTRUCTION: From before land is even developed, our team at Hibbards have gone through extensive processes of planning to be confident that what we are producing is best for our clients, with a timely and high quality deliverance assured.

CREATING THE PLANS FOR OUR CLIENTS’ FUTURE Our high level standard plans begin with a sketch of an idea, followed by much scrutiny by the construction department and then processes such as desired furniture layout and electrical plan designation, initial plan developed and drawn, initial costings and prototypes built. Any changes necessary to the plan are made, and then cycle through the process again until it’s right. From the initial idea of a new standard plan, we carefully consider what the purpose of the plan is - whether it’s to be a family home, as a tool for a first home buyer or entry level purchaser, young person, elderly couple, extended family or many other possible ranges that our clients will be looking for. much respect for our tradespeople and are grateful for their constant effort and hard work to meet our demands. We offer our trades consistent work, consistent pay, and we consider them an integral part within the Hibbards Family. STANDARD INCLUSIONS WITHIN A HIBBARD HOME We have to ask ourselves and answer as accurately as possible, “What is it that our clients need in order to move into a completed home?â€?‌ this is a thorough list put together

to ensure all costs are covered, as no hidden or unforeseen costs are passed on to our clients. We don’t go to lavish extremes of designer inclusions; however, we do include everything that our clients need to comfortably live in a brand new home, while keeping it affordable. High quality finishes are assured, with high quality final touches, making it easy for our clients to add their own homely additions once it’s all theirs! MARKET PLACE RESEARCH What the current trends within the market

place and more importantly, what the future of the market place is and where it is moving all need to be considered and picked accurately, as our blocks being developed are often at least 6 - 12 months from becoming completed homes. With land being purchased many months from it being available for listing, reading the market is a vital element to success, with the aim to provide the right product at the right time - or it just wont sell. BUYING LAND Best aspect, slope of land, shape of block,

current and future streetscape and predicted clientele are all vital considerations when choosing what plan is to go on what block. We buy our land in many forms. We buy large parcels of land and develop the land ourselves into affordable family oriented solutions. We buy direct from developers, often multiple blocks in stages of development. We buy single blocks.

Each block of land is reported on, with many important factors checked to determine whether it suitably fits within our system to ensure it will be what our clients want. Consideration is taken for what’s best for our clients - which includes close proximity to local amenities, good aspect/position on the block, price and demand for suitable plans that could fit on each particular block, land fall and streetscape - both current and prospective is considered. PLANNING ESTATES Streetscape is extremely important in considering what plan, facade and colour scheme is chosen for each and every block. Each of our standard plans have correlating diverse facade options, using modern, contemporary, coastal, modest and timeless appearances. When one of our standard plans

is teamed up with one of our interior and exterior colour schemes, there are up to 260 possibilities - PER STANDARD PLAN! We plan the street so that no two homes are identical and that the colour schemes and facades flow smoothly through the streets from home to home. We ensure that all landscaping is not only included to complete the look of each new home, but we plan for and use suitable components to make it low maintenance and easy care, no matter what level of enthusiasm our prospective clients have for the gardening. Our landscaping provides the perfect canvas for personal touches when the client has readily moved in to their new home! Each listing per block of land goes through an extensive process before we can even start ... site inspection, plan allocation, colour

WHEN A PROPERTY LISTING IS READY After our initial planning and developing stage, from this point forward a client can be introduced to the property. At this point we

have planned for and worked into the cashflow that this home is going to be built regardless of whether there is a client purchase or not. It is very rare for one of our homes to be completely built without a client purchase. options possible for getting finance approval, the Hibbards Sales Team have built relationships with and gained valuable knowledge from many financial service providers, so that together with some information from our clients, we are able to assess who will best be suitable to assist you in gaining the finance you require and how to go about getting that approved. In a lot of cases, we

are able to set up a savings plan and match our client up with a property that will be built and ready at a simultaneous time to having finance ready. Knowledge of the timing involved is very much the key to success for our clients. If our clients aren’t currently in a position to secure their finance necessary for the purchase of their home, we will show them what they need to do to get themselves ready. In many cases, these prospective clients come back within 6 to 12 months and become successful in purchasing their home.

OUR VISION AT HIBBARDS It was Bruce’s attention to detail, eye for quality and his desire to find and provide what people want that has evolved Hibbards to become the family operated building company it is today. Hibbards is about providing the path to financial freedom achievable in the ownership of your own home - the perfect platform to create a safe and

nurturing environment to watch your family grow, producing a complete home where all you need to do is turn the key and move in. The pride and sense of achievement as you walk into your own home, knowing with certainty that you have invested in a secure future for yourself and the ones you love deeply moves us and motivates us at Hibbards to continue to be a steady stepping stone to the materialisation of dreams.

here are you originally from? I’m originally from Melbourne; I moved here in October 2012. I would say I’ve found one of the best spots to live up in the northern beaches. regardless. As hard as it is to do, do not focus on the fee or commission that the agent is going to charge you. Consider first if you think that you in the sale of your property. In a nutshell, are they the agent who is going to represent your best interest, ethically and honestly and put the most amount of money in your back pocket at the end of the day - not just a high true market price of your property. One of the biggest problems in selling a home is overpricing in the beginning of the marketing campaign. The first few weeks are often crucial, as it is during this time that the internet, print media or agent’s buyer data bases occur. If it is overpriced and misses its on the market for a considerable time. Potential buyers recognise overpriced property for what it is; this makes them cautious and decreases competition for the property. Most and purchasers end up with the psychological edge once negotiations are underway. Take your time about choosing an agent; after all, it’s not something you do every day, and you want to be confident in your choice. Do your homework, and don’t be seduced by fantasy prices. Be extremely careful of the agent who gives commission in order to get your business. If he or she can’t show their worth to you, do financial transactions in your life? Never forget that for most of us our home is the largest investment we ever make. It’s our nest egg, part of our superannuation package, and our kids’ inheritance.
