behind
THE SCENES the making of the magazine
I’m not going to lie. It’s hard to see our premiere issue come to a close. I assume this is what it feels like to send your first born off to kindergarten. All the prep work is done, but it must now go find its way in the world.
We have spent these long summer days on location. From obsessing over every little detail at terra sol sanctuary to, quite honestly, risking our intern’s life at Marker 137. Needless to say, it has been an unforgettable process. Here is your sneak peek into our iced coffee and camaraderie fueled Fall/Winter issue.
XO,
LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
n the coast, wedding season lasts a little longer. Even as winter approaches, it’s not surprising to find yourself lounging at an outdoor reception. So when Focus on the Coast discontinued our print edition and decided to head down a different path, we knew exactly where to begin and knew our loyal readers would be there. As we shifted to an electronic format for our main content, you liked and shared our stories and left uplifting comments. All the while, we were hard at work on the debut issue of Focus on the Coast Weddings, which you hold in your hands. It fills a special place in my heart. We’ve always been a fan of Wilmington’s flourishing wedding industry, but felt the town lacked a magazine with the individuality and style that so many weddings here exude. Wheels began to turn. What you now hold is a boutique wedding magazine dedicated to stunning brides and the experts who turn a simple date into the best day of someone’s life. CHECK OUT OUR PUBLISHER ON H E R BIG DAY !
When the brainstorming process began, we knew we wanted a magazine that stood the test of time. The editorial is timeless, the photography, classic. If you need inspiration for your rehearsal dinner, look at our gorgeous spread on page 33. Rip out our handcrafted artwork and use it as a mat to frame your wedding picture. One of our favorite projects was curating a fashion-forward bridal spread, found on page 10, for the modern bohemian bride. This spread convinced us that we were doing something special, but putting this issue together was hard work. Luckily, we had a team of amazing people who helped in many different ways. Dana Laymon, founder of Wilmington Weddings, deserves a special thank you. We hope you enjoy reading the first issue of Focus on the Coast Weddings as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Here’s to never ending-love, pictures worth a thousand words, and dancing under the stars. Cheers! We’re off to work on the next installment…

CAMILLE’S OF WILMINGTON W r i t t e n B y : B e c k y S ta r k e y P h o t o s B y : D a n a L ay m o n P h o t o g r a p h y
At the helm of Camille’s of Wilmington sit Joanne Miranda and An-
gela Woodcock, a formidable duo with years of experience in the bridal
industry. Brought together by their love of “beautiful dresses and happy brides,” the two initially worked together at a formalwear chain, but eventually decided it was time to branch out on their own.
Joanne recalls making the move. “I was excited and nervous all at the same time. Even though we started out very small, it was a big step.” What began as a tiny boutique is now a one-stop shop for formalwear, but gowns are their objects of study. At Camille’s, Angela says, “we work with all kinds of brides, but most of them are smart, educated brides who want a fabulous gown without needlessly spending a ridiculous amount of money. That’s where we come in!” Finding the right dress can be a process. Some brides know exactly what they want and others have no clue. Joanne has a strategy to help every bride: “I always ask, How do you see yourself on your wedding day?” Angela also suggests keeping an open mind. “Sometimes what brides come in thinking they want is not always what looks best on them, and I have seen brides settle on the complete opposite!” With a diverse collection of dresses and designers, the team at Camille’s strives to stand out from the crowd, attending wedding markets and fashion shows throughout the year. So how do they decide which dresses get a coveted spot in Camille’s? Years of experience, according to Angela. “Sometimes we will splurge on a gown that we feel is really exquisite.” Camille’s also offers bridesmaid dresses, flower girl dresses, tuxedo rentals, prom dresses, and accessories as well as custom alteration. If you’re looking for that beautiful gown to complete your wedding day dream, the team at Camille’s has just what you’re looking for.

LUMINA GEM A LOCAL TREASURE W r i t t e n B y : B e c k y S ta r k e y P h o t o s B y : D a n a L ay m o n P h o t o g r a p h y
Planning a wedding of any size requires a great deal of decision making, but one of the most important decisions is the f irst one. It all begins with the ring.
Traditionally, the man picks out the engagement ring. More recently, however, couples are choosing the ring together. Lumina Gem owner, Brad Bass, says, “Nothing gives us more pleasure and makes us feel more honored than helping customers feel like a part of our family. We help every couple make an informed decision, regardless of budget, and that is not something you can have confidence doing online. And perhaps even better is that our couples feel that they have made a friend in the jewelry business, one they feel comfortable doing business with for a lifetime.” Bass continues, “We work with all kinds of couples, including the business savvy, the trendsetters, and those who want something unique. As far as bridal jewelry goes, we specialize in estate, designer, and custom designed engagement rings and wedding bands, the latter being a particular passion of mine.” As a graduate of the prestigious Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and having a Metal Design degree from East Carolina University, Brad is able to take a customer’s vision and bring it to life. Whether it’s repurposing a family heirloom or starting with a sketch, he and his team will make it happen to your satisfaction.
“With jewelry, you’re pairing sculptural art with functionality, emotion, rarity, and value. I love learning and using different techniques to help fulf ill my client’s vision and bring it to life. It’s also fun for me when our clients realize that creating their own designs can actually be easier and less costly than they thought.”
Founded in 2009 by Brad, Lumina Gem started small, by appointment only in fact, but has grown into a recognized and highly regarded jewelry resource for the area, even working with clients across the country. The company has carved out a unique niche. They offered only estate jewelry in the beginning, but now half of the store is new and designer jewelry. Says Bass, “Our extensive new bridal lines allow us to compete with any major retailer options, yet we still offer one-of-a-kind estate pieces at unbeatable prices. The fact that we do custom jewelry in house is an added bonus and gives our clients unlimited options.” Check out www.LuminaGem.com where you’ll find just about everything that is available in the store and more. You will definitely want to visit the company’s Facebook page to see the most recent deals and photos of some of the happy couples they have recently helped to find their dream ring. And just for fun, once a year the company hosts the ‘Addicted to Love’ contest for couples to show off their favorite photos. When it’s your time to shine, Brad and his entire team at Lumina Gem look forward to helping you begin your journey together.

MILNER’S CA F E & CAT E R I NG W r i t t e n B y : B e c k y S ta r k e y
Chef Mark Milner and Tara Speth work with couples to craft a menu that f its specif ic tastes
and desires, no matter how simple or extravagant. Where one client may want a menu to
reflect a Southern childhood, another may want to incorporate the cuisine of places they’ve
visited. Want sixteen different entrees? Not a problem. Hurricane rolling in? They’ll be there.

very couple has a story and your wedding day is the chance to share it with friends and family. Each detail, from the lettering on the invitations to the color palette of the bridal bouquet, is a reflection of two individuals with unique tastes. So it comes as no surprise that deciding upon a menu for your special day is one of the most important tasks on your to-do list. Milner’s Cafe takes the stress out of the entire process. “Wedding food should remain simple with a few flourishes of flavor,” says Chef Mark. “But we never skimp on the sauces. That is key!” 19th century French food writer Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin once wrote, “Tell me what kind of food you eat, and I will tell you what kind of man you are.” In today’s world, where the quality of ingredients and care with which they’re prepared is immensely important, those words still ring true. Food is as much a reflection of identity as clothing or music preferences, and Chef Mark understands this. The days of “chicken or beef ” are over! Couples want flavorful food that satisfies hunger and heart. It’s another part of the story that needs to be told. Dedicated to an individual, intimate experience, Milner’s Café and Catering is a dream partnership for the food-centric couple. With appetizers like stone ground grit spoons with creole barbeque shrimp and entrees like seared grouper with a cantaloupe, Bermuda onion and basil relish, even their sample menu will leave you looking disdainfully at your packed lunch. But Milner’s prowess extends far beyond the traditional reception meal, offering anything from an assorted sushi platter to a grit station. “We usually start with a tasting. We offer the couple a sampling of our dishes and then discuss what they liked and what their vision is and fuse all of it together.” For Chef Mark, his cooking philosophy may be short, but it’s meaningful: local, simple, and creative. For couples looking for seasoned professionals with a fresh take on wedding cuisine, the choice is obvious.

DIA MIA DESIGN
Planning a wedding involves many details. All in one day you may f ind yourself assigning reception seating, f inding housing for relatives, and tracking down the bridesmaid gifts you bought three months ago. It can be overwhelming at times, but the modern bride is a multitasker who knows when to DIY and when to hire out. When it comes down to it though, we all have questions. How do you avoid an awkward situation with a friend? Should I really invest in the extra coverage package? That’s why we turned to Dayma Edwards, Director of Meetings & Events at The Terraces on Sir Tyler and founder of Dia Mia Design, a full service event planning company. Below you’ll f ind her expert advice on everything from picking a venue to invitation deadlines. WHY SHOULD I HIRE A WEDDING PLANNER O R D AY - O F C OO R D I N ATO R ? M Y B E S T F R I E N D PLANNED HER WEDDING AND SHE HAS OFFERED TO DO IT FOR ME. SHE IS ALSO GOING TO BE MY MOH. SHOULD I LET HER HANDLE IT?
Wedding planners or day-of coordinators are essential to a stress-free wedding day. With their knowledge and experience, they can help you choose vendors that will be right for you and your budget, which in the long run might save you money and disappointment. Things always happen at a wedding, but with a professional wedding planner/day-of coordinator, you can be assured that they can handle any issues that might arise.
W H AT I S H O U L D L OO K F O R I N A V E N U E ?
Every venue has its pros and cons, but the first thing to consider is logistics. Write down all your questions before your meeting and remember to take notes. How many guests will it hold comfortably, not maximum? What items, if any, come with the rental of the space? Are there elevators, or is it wheelchair accessible? How many parking spaces are available? Does the space fit the style for the wedding? Are there any restrictions for decoration or use of the space? Is there a designated smoking area? Do I have to choose from a specific list of vendors? What is your policy for alcohol? Where are the bathrooms located and are they spacious? IS IT WRONG IF I ASK FOR GUESTS NOT TO BRING THEIR KIDS? HOW DO I ADDRESS THIS ON THE INVITES?
It is your wedding and there are multiple ways to address this issue. a. You may have the invites printed with “Adults Only” at the very bottom. b. Only address the adults on the inner envelope of your invitation. Follow this up by telling your immediate family members, friends, and bridal party that kids are not invited and they will help spread the word. c. List “Babysitter Information” on your wedding/engagement website and continue to spread the word. d. Know that some guests will not get the subtle hints and bring their kids anyway, so have plan B in place and hire a babysitter. If you’re interested in having a wedding at The Terraces at Sir Tyler and would like to know more, contact Dayma by phone (910-473-5550) or email (events@terracesonsirtyler.com). Already have a venue, but don’t want to worry about planning the rest of the event? Let Dayma take the reins. She offers custom wedding planning, day-of coordination, and other event planning services. Learn more about Dia Mia Design at www.diamiadesign.com.

quirky & coherent “We had only a handful of vague, unrelated ideas about what we wanted — pirates, princesses, a little bit of Disney, plenty of purple, vintage treasures and family heirlooms, and lots and lots of books. But from the beginning Rebecca understood exactly what we were going for. She came up with a concept that tied all of it, along with many of her own suggestions, into a coherent, quirky celebration that was totally us. “From the moment she came on board, our wedding planning was totally stress-free. She helped us find a great deal on the perfect venue, had great insights on vendors, worked magic with a limited budget, and was so tuned into every detail that we could enjoy not only our wedding day but our entire engagement.”

HOW TO HOST A MEANINGFUL REHEARSAL DINNER
W r i t t e n B y : B e c k y S ta r k e y P h o t o s B y : K at e S u pa P h o t o g r a p h y
Unless you’re planning another small get-together, the rehearsal dinner is usually the event that gets the wedding weekend under way, letting family and friends catch up or get to know each
other before the big day. Whether you’re holding a grand affair or an intimate gathering, planning the rehearsal dinner will be a cinch with our tried and true tips.
FOTC WEDDINGS

ASSIGN A HOST
According to tradition, the groom’s parent(s) usually cover the rehearsal dinner, but we know that family circumstances are as varied as clouds in the sky. No matter who’s footing the bill, having someone act as a point person for questions and last minute details will guarantee you truly feel honored at this event instead of overwhelmed. PICK A VENUE
Without the constrictions of a wedding reception, your possibilities are wide open here! As long as it meets your budget and can accommodate your guests, anywhere that serves food is on the table. If you’re looking for a few local suggestions, we’ve got some great choices along with some sage advice from the pros!
G I V E G U E S T S T H E D E TA I L S
Just like the wedding, the rehearsal dinner requires invitations (preferably sent two weeks after the official wedding invite goes out). Who you send them to is up to you. Some couples prefer to keep the event to wedding party members, their significant others, and family. Others choose to invite the entire guest list. INDULGING AND IMBIBING
Think of the rehearsal dinner as a casual ice breaker for the wedding. Have a little fun with the menu, but don’t get too complicated. As for cocktails, we suggest limiting the selection to wine and beer. You can always offer a signature cocktail to bring the event to a close, but just make sure everyone has a safe ride home.

GET THE SOUND RIGHT
The wedding day itinerary typically doesn’t allow for too many speeches, so the rehearsal dinner is the perfect chance for the closest family and friends to share their love. While the bride’s father or parents, best man, and maid of honor speak at the reception, other family and members of the bridal party can share stories at the dinner. Just remember one thing: make sure speakers have access to a microphone. No one wants to miss a moment.
Where you book your rehearsal dinner is, first and foremost, a matter of party size and budget, but it also helps set the tone for the remainder of the weekend. We spoke to several venues around town to get some advice from the professionals on how to throw an amazing, stress-free rehearsal dinner.

“Family style plates of food are the way to go. We plate large, beautiful, shareable dishes that create a wonderful interaction between guests. This style of service is great at accommodating all types of dietary restrictions (with some planning) and eliminates long wait times. Guests don’t have to make choices and they have the option of trying all of the food that is offered. Over and over again we have talked with guests who love the intimacy of the family-style approach to rehearsal dinners. With autumn’s entrance comes crisp, cool mornings, leaves crunching on the ground, and the most coveted season for a bride and her beau to jump the broom. I remember the beautiful fall day that I got married. We had a traditional Southern ceremony at a chapel in Oxford, Mississippi. I held hands with my beloved as my super Southern, billowing ball gown brushed the fallen leaves on the ground. Thanks to the low humidity, my hair was absolutely purrrfect, darling! Later, we danced the night away to bluegrass music that echoed through the dark night sky. It was all so beautiful, but it was the most perfect day of my life because of the friends and family that gathered to wish us well before our move to Wilmington. After the wedding was over, I remember carefully packing each wedding gift, knowing that that person had a small part in helping us start our life together. I still use many of the gracious gifts that were given to us, and I think of my amazing friends and family every time I use one of our gifts. If you’re looking to gather some wedding gift options for your beautiful bride and her groom that will be as timeless as their marriage, we’ve put together the best guide you can find. Featuring local wares from amazing vendors, these gifts are sure to bring a smile to the happy couple’s faces.

As much as we Southerners love our big blowout weddings, so too do we love all of the superstitious rules that govern them. From bells to veils, rain to rhyme, there are so many traditions to take into account when wedding planning, but few are as much fun (or as tasty) as burying the bourbon.
Once you’ve got your bourbon and the venue approval, it’s time to dig the hole. It doesn’t have to be too deep, but the bourbon does need to stay buried for a month. Use your discretion. You must bury the bottle upside down! This is an important element to ensuring you get the weather you want.
Legend has it, if the bourbon is buried properly at your venue, you’ll have perfect weather the day of your wedding.
Now people, if there is one thing that needs to be stressed here, it’s this: don’t forget where you buried the bourbon! This is critical to the last step of the process, which takes place on the day of your wedding. While enjoying the beautiful weather, dig up that bourbon and share it with your bridal party.
To get this tradition started right, you need some bourbon. We suggest North Carolina native Trey Herring’s Carolina Bourbon. Growing up in rural Goldsboro, Trey was surrounded by a rich tradition of home-crafted spirits. The old recipes of moonshiners in Trey’s hometown have inspired his own craft of distilling bourbon whiskey. And yes, this is a Carolina bourbon, despite the popular misconception that bourbons have to hail from Kentucky. Once you have your bottle, wait for a day when the sun shines high and there’s not a rain cloud on the horizon. The date should be about a month out from your wedding. The weather at the time of the burial is the most important part of the tradition. You’ll get the same conditions on your wedding day, so make sure it’s nice out before you pick up your shovel. We should mention that it’s probably a good idea to check in with your venue before you go tearing up their lawn for this tradition.

With its smooth finish and toffee notes, Trey Herring’s Carolina Bourbon is a great sipper, but not all the groomsmen and bridesmaids are going to want their unearthed bourbon neat or on the rocks. Luckily this Carolina Bourbon mixes well, holding its sturdy profile even against your colas, gingers, and simple syrups. Everybody wants beautiful weather on their wedding day, and burying a bottle of hooch in the ground may very well be the way to do it. Of all the wedding superstitions, this one has to be the most refreshing. Trey Herring’s favorite wedding tradition? “I get up in front of everyone and sing ‘Strokin’ by Clarence Carter,” he chuckles behind ice blue eyes. He says the bourbon helps with that tradition too.

When they found the perfect picturesque view, the focus shifted to the décor, where Alyssa wanted to invoke the idea of Southern elegance. “Inside we had lots of greenery, a touch of rustic brown wood, and lots of candles and lanterns. Altogether, it created a beautiful setting with an intimate feel, which is exactly what we were going for,” says Alyssa. Her favorite part of the day though? “Saying I do! The ceremony was picture perfect. The light and greenery brought it all together, creating a breathtaking atmosphere. Turning around to see all of our family and friends there to support us meant so much. The entire day was full of beauty, happiness, dancing, and love. It truly was a magical day.”

From the amazing cake to the ice sculpture, the day was full of beauty, but nothing compared to the surrounding natural wonder. “The water is a big part of my life and our marriage, which is why we chose Airlie Gardens as our location. During our ceremony, we were overlooking the intracoastal waterway, with a cross that my husband had built out of wood from his family’s old barn, and we could just see God’s glory all across the water.” After the ceremony, the glory of the day continued with the reception. “Walking into the reception, my breath was taken away. Fresh Affairs did such an amazing job. From the floral chandelier above my cake to my entire sweetheart table and the bridesmaids table covered in flowers.” Thanks to careful planning and trusted professionals, the couple and their family was able to spend the rest of the night enjoying the entertainment and having a great time.

I had a very vintage dress, and we wanted the overall feel of the wedding to be somewhat nostalgic as well. We really wanted the flowers and lighting to play a huge part in the decor. We had kumquats and privet berries and ranunculus, and an amazing Edison bulb and greenery display over the dance floor,” say KC. “My favorite part of the day had to be our parade from the Atrium to Bakery 105. Jason Andre from The MidAtlantic Band played the bagpipes, and together with our two dogs, we led a parade of all of our guests. It was a short brisk walk, the sun was setting, and the bagpipes could be heard down the street. It was magical.” “There was so much that we did to make the wedding ours,” says KC, but there was a huge surprise waiting for her at the reception site. “My mother asked Salt Harbor to recreate a large scale version my sculptural installation Dandelion. It was such a wonderful and personal addition to the decor.”

A ROMANTIC RETREAT O N T H E C R Y S TA L C O A S T W R I T T E N B Y : B E C K Y S TA R K E Y
These days, weddings and the accompanying honeymoons take on many different forms. My husband and I combined our honeymoon and wedding and eloped to Hawaii for the least stressful day ever. Friends of ours recently took their honeymoon before the wedding to guarantee ideal weather in Canada. Another couple waited months after the wedding and headed to a mountain cabin to get snowed in together.
Although we loved our adorable cottage, there’s really no wrong way to enjoy your stay. For those who want the full service hotel experience, the DoubleTree Atlantic Beach Oceanfront Hotel is your best bet. Each room has a private balcony, ocean view, and beach access just feet away from your romantic enclave. If you’re looking for a more historical experience, there are several bed and breakfasts in Beaufort that will tickle your fancy.
Your wedding day is one of the most important days of your life, but the honeymoon is your first trip together as a married couple. You want it to be amazing, but that can mean different things. Some want to get out early and explore the landscape, others want to sleep in and have a boozy brunch, while another couple might want to visit historical sites. Or maybe you want to fit it all in! Of course you could travel across the globe to do this, or you could stay close to home. Even though The Crystal Coast is an easy two hour drive, I promise you’ll feel transported to a world made for two, whether it’s for your honeymoon or a romantic weekend getaway.
Fresh, local, and delicious. What more can you ask for when it comes to dining? There are so many places on the island that cater to a full range of flavors, but you must try Pescara Wood Oven Kitchen. This was one of our favorite meals of the entire trip. Once an oceanfront beach house, the restaurant has been beautifully renovated and the menu, billed as Coastal Italian, makes you want to order one of everything. In our experience, whatever is placed in front of you will be out of this world! This is the perfect spot to revel in marital bliss while your loved one is bathed in candlelight.
S TAY Accommodations are a matter of personal taste. Some people want a simple place to rest their head at night, while others need to lounge in the lap of luxury. When my husband and I sat down to plan this past summer’s trip, we knew we wanted to rent an oceanfront beach house through Bluewater Realty. We’ve always enjoyed the home away from home experience. We spent every morning on the upper deck that looked out over the beach. My husband would bring me coffee, and we’d plan our day out.

But, in my opinion, not all meals need to be a romantic affair. Sampling tried and true local spots is one of our favorite things to do while vacationing. When we sat down at Banks Grill and saw cooks sliding colorful, plastic plates full of biscuits and gravy across an aluminum counter, it was love at first sight, and then again with first bite. My advice: go hungry!
P L AY My husband and I are self-professed beach bums and could have easily sat on the beach the entire time, but with a variety of unique experiences right outside our door, we know we couldn’t lounge the entire time. One of the first things we did was pedal through Beaufort with the fine folks of Hungry Town Tours. This was our first time to the idyllic town, and while my husband was apprehensive about the biking/listening combo, he proved himself to be a professional, threatening a wheelie or two. As architecture fans, we loved learning about how Beaufort’s beautiful houses were built, but there’s a tour for everyone, even Nicholas Sparks fans. We also recommend taking a ferry to the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. Along the way, the ferry driver made a detour so our group could spot the wild horses of Shackleford Banks. Once we arrived, we climbed 188 steps to the top of the lighthouse for a breathtaking 180 degree view. Talk about hand-holding material! After we’d gotten the best glimpse of the coast, it was time for some R&R, but we closed the week out in style with sunset wine and cheese aboard a custom Carolina style Sport-fisher. This was the perfect way to wind down and talk about our favorite parts of The Crystal Coast. Although this trip wasn’t part of our honeymoon, it was probably one of the best trips we’ve taken. It was a special kind of casual romance, where our experiences never overshadowed our desire to just be together in the moment. Also, the fact that it’s just down the road takes the pressure away to jam pack every minute of your itinerary. For us, this meant sleeping in, long lunches, and flying by the seat of our pants a couple of days. As long as you have the right person, marriage is fun no matter where you are, but visiting The Crystal Coast makes you feel like you just said “I do.”

FIRST DANCE SONGS Picking the song that you and your partner will share
your first dance to can be a lot of pressure. Not only does it help set the tone for the reception, but you want
it to be an accurate description of your taste as a couple. Unless you already share a special song, it’s possible to
spend hours upon hours searching for the right tune. Luckily, we’ve spent the last few months in complete
wedding mode, so we’ve got a song to suit every taste. Use this QR code to listen to our favorite first dance songs and many more on Spotify.
