ayouB SiSterS return to ScHool Two inspirational musical sisters from Bearsden returned to their secondary school to give a special performance to pupils.

of the important part that Music School played in their early musical development.”

Sarah and Laura Ayoub visited Douglas Academy earlier this year to perform in a concert and to join a questions and answers session. Laura (left) and Sarah Ayoub recently visited their old school, Douglas Academy, to perform in a concert and take part in a Q&A session

The sisters play piano and strings and have been recently signed by Decca Records. They have also been championed by Classic FM and played London’s Royal Albert Hall for one of the radio station’s concerts, in the company of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

harmony, aural and composition lessons. We also had countless opportunities to play in an orchestra and sing in a choir.

Sarah and Laura said it was a huge honour to be back in Douglas Academy, which is home to a prestigious Music School, and to perform again with the school’s orchestra.

“To relive our teenage years by performing once again with the school orchestra we once played in was incredibly moving and a moment we will sincerely cherish.”

They added: “The school took such wonderful care of our musical abilities from the ages of 13 to 18 and between the two of us, we had piano, violin, cello and singing lessons, as well as theory,

Mark Evans, the music school course director, said: “It is wonderful to see the girls doing so well. We are all very proud of what they have achieved. They have both worked so hard, and their current success is so well deserved.

In other news, the sisters were also delighted to hear they had topped the classical charts on iTunes, in time for Burns’ Night, with their hit, Melodies From Scotland with the RSNO. It features some of Burns' most famous works, including Auld Lang Syne and My Love is Like A Red Red Rose. Although their parents are not from Scotland, the sisters said they were brought up with a love of Scottish music. Sarah told the BBC's Good Morning Scotland programme: “We were born in Glasgow but our parents are Egyptian so when we'd have guests at home, we'd be summoned to the lounge and requested to play Scottish music.”

The pair's talents have also been spotted by award-winning “I’m delighted the girls wanted producer Mark Ronson. They had to come back to the school to perform and it is, I think, indicative posted a cover of his hit Uptown Funk on YouTube only to be contacted by him days later. Sarah We were born in Glasgow but our parents said: “Mark Ronson must have are Egyptian so when we'd have guests at seen the video and summoned us and a couple of other musicians to home, we'd be summoned to the lounge record a new cover in Abbey Road and requested to play Scottish music Studios in London.”

The John Muir Way, which passes through the local area, has been named one of Scotland’s Great Trails.

on Scotland’s east coast before travelling to the west coast, where he set sail for life in America. Muir went on to become one of the greatest proponents of national parks and an acclaimed conservationist. The John Muir Way heads through Scotland’s first national park, Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park.

The 134-mile cross-Scotland route is the 28th Great Trail to be named. The JMW joins other famous routes in the prestigious stable of Scotland’s Great Trails, such as the West Highland Way, which starts in Milngavie.

Keith Geddes, the visionary behind the route, said: “The John Muir Way is an important part of honouring the work of John Muir as a renowned conservationist. We also hope to raise awareness of Muir’s legacy.”

The JMW has been given the SGT accolade by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH). Since its launch in April 2014, the route has become the focus for many thousands of walkers and cyclists.

The JMW has proved to be popular with both visitors and locals alike. Many people from Bearsden and Milngavie make good use of the Burncrooks Reservoir extension path.

The route, from Dunbar to Helensburgh, echoes Muir’s own journey growing up

“The champions' enthusiasm to take forward the process of designing and developing the new Allander Centre is inspirational and I look forward to maintaining the momentum.”

The Allander Champions Group has been re-established to fi nalise the planning of a new Allander Leisure Centre

Alan Oliver, the vice-chair of the Champions group, uses the Allander centre twice a week on average. He said: “The existing facility is dated and does not meet the demands of current users. All aspects are in need of modernising and some activities expanded to meet the current and future needs of users. The aim is to provide our community with a fi rst-class sports facility that is accessible and affordable to users of all abilities.”

Community campaigners have been praised for their enthusiasm and patience over the development of a new Allander Leisure Centre. The Allander Champions Group, which will meet every eight weeks going forward, was set up so that stakeholders could provide input into the design and scope of the new Bearsden facility. The champions include East Dunbartonshire councillors, representatives from the user groups and the community, as well as officers from the Council and EDLC Trust.

The replacement project is expected to start in early 2021 with the allocated budget for the project increased by the council from £18 million to £25 million. It is reported that the council’s level of contribution has increased from £8 million to £19 million.

The Council made it clear that EDC’s capital programme is funded differently and separately from the revenue budget, which pays for day-to-day services.

Councillor Rhondda Geekie, Leader of the Council and chair of the Champions group, said: “I am delighted that the Allander

The freehold for the pub on the Stockiemuir Road, between Milngavie and Drymen, has been acquired from pub giant Greene King by local entrepreneurs Stuart and David Fraser.

It’s believed the same designs will be used when the Inn relaunches in around a year’s time, although it’s expected the pub will be renamed. Reports reveal the Frasers will spend up to £1 million on the venue, including purchase and the revamp. When the 200-year-old Carbeth Inn shut its doors for the last time before Christmas, social

The inn is so old that it was mentioned in the Sir Walter Scott novel Rob Roy but sadly its fortunes have not been so prosperous in recent times. Scotland’s stricter drink driving laws have been partly blamed for the demise in the traditional out-of-town pub market, such as that offered by the Carbeth. The Fraser brothers plan to base the new venue on some features of the St Mocha brand, with coffee and retail at the heart of the operation. Other ideas that

Tamara Kennedy, chair of BMYO, says: “It was an extra special concert as it marked 40 years since BMYO performed their fi rst concert.

“The founder member, Anne Moffat, said she wanted children to ‘enjoy music, achieve their personal best and to have a life long love of music’. I think this was refl ected in the concert as it BMYO meets every Thursday really did refl ect the effort and the evening at Douglas Academy in enthusiasm of all those involved. Milngavie. They are now working towards their Easter Programme. “It was amazing to hear such a variety of music by our orchestras If you would like to become a member contact the group at and wind band, from classical to jazz and fi lm scores. Sewing seeds of ideas An Embroiderers’ Guild is delighted to welcome celebrated Scottish textile artist Karen Suzuki to this month’s meeting. The presentation, entitled Nameless Wonders, will offer an insight into Glasgow-based Karen’s unique hand-stitched textiles work. Ruth Blake, of Milngavie, is secretary of the Kirkintilloch Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild. She says: “Karen is a wonderful artist and she is influenced by urban wildlife, Staffordshire pottery figures and old worn toys.

“Her work is spontaneously and intuitively made, vigorously stitched and with a rough finish. It will be a treat for our guild to hear more from Karen about her work.” Karen’s techniques are simple and traditional, using only hand processes of sewing and embroidery. She rarely makes preliminary drawings and, instead, allows each piece of work to evolve during its making. The presentation takes place on March 22 at 7.30pm in St David’s Memorial Park Church in Kirkintilloch. Ruth reveals that the Embroiderers’ Guild group is well attended by people from Bearsden and Milngavie and is ideal for anyone with an interest in embroidery,

textiles or mixed media. She says: “We welcome beginners and our group will help you develop your skills and try new techniques.

“Our meetings are a mix of talks and stitching nights plus Saturday workshops designed for both experienced stitchers and those new to the craft.” The meetings take place at St David's Church on Wednesday evenings, twice a month September to May and and Saturday workshops. See www.embroiderersguild.com to find out more about the Kirkintilloch group.

The Macmillan Cancer Support Milngavie & Bearsden Fundraising group is looking for new volunteer members. The team is keen to hear from people who can offer energy and enthusiasm for fundraising. The group’s aim is to raise money and awareness of local services and to help support people affected by cancer in the west of Scotland. Volunteers should be aged 18 or more and have the creativity to help with ideas for fundraising events. Other help is needed with raising awareness of the Macmillan services available. The volunteers have the chance to work with a team of people to make a difference in the community.

Grab a Great mortGaGe deal Although the long term impact of Brexit and the recent elections result in the United States on future mortgate interest rates is uncertain, action can be taken now to fix your repayments. Borrowers with fixed rate mortgages ending as far away as July 2017 could consider getting hold of a new deal now before these low rates potentially disappear.

Next to purchasing your home, choosing the right mortgage is probably one of the most important decisions you will make when you are looking for a new deal.

Since the Bank of England lowered the base rate to 0.25 per cent, there have been a number of new two year fixed deals appearing on the market at interest rates never seen before.

Making the wrong choice about your mortgage can result in you having to pay hundreds if not thousands of pounds more than you need to pay.

Although these two year deals may seem attractive and could suit some borrowers, they may not be the best choice for those people whose fixed rate deal ends while the UK may be experiencing potentially difficult times going through the process of leaving the EU.

For further information on how you could potentially save money each month on your mortgage and secure your future repayments, call The Mortgage Advice Service on 0800 011 2827 or logon to www.themortgageadvice service.co.uk

Many people find the work rewarding and some people also use the volunteering work for developing communication skills and enhancing their CVs.

All volunteers receive an induction, relevant training and agreed out-of-pocket expenses. The roles are flexible and it’s suggested that people volunteer for at least a few hours a month. Once you have applied, a Macmillan representative will contact you to discuss your application and the role in more detail, and to answer any questions. on tHe trail of Heritage

History, heritage and landscape are the themes of a new walking trail that is being developed in our local communities. The East Dunbartonshire Trails and Tales programme is the driving force for the linear route via Westerton, Bearsden and Milngavie, which reveals various highlights of “water” and “heritage buildings”. Noted features and landmarks include Westerton Arts & Crafts listed buildings at Maxwell Avenue, St Germain’s Loch, Roman baths and barracks, boathouse remains at Kilmardinny Loch, a dye works site, Burnbrae Works site (Bennie Rail Plane site), Gavin’s Mill, Elangowan paper mill site, Gas

Works at Craigton and Tambowie Distillery, among many others. The route also celebrates the contrast between the three areas, moving from the arts and crafts garden suburb of Westerton to the rural and Highland connections at Milngavie. By following the trail from south to north, walkers are offered a graduated and revealing escape from the city. There are many outlooks and viewpoints to see too, as the route reaches its highest point at Drumclog Moor in Milngavie.

The aim is for people to walk the trail in one outing of 15.5km or in different sections from Westerton to Bearsden, Bearsden to Milngavie and a Milngavie Loop of 7.9km. Access to many different points can be reached by public transport. The next stage in the development of the project is to recruit artists to enhance the trail further with art works that tell a story or refer to a landmark or destination point. Trails and Tales is an East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture (EDLC) Trust Programme and is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Creative Scotland and East Dunbartonshire Council. Get the best care for your ears... Husband and wife team Greg and Val Clements of Clements Earcare Services tell us about about their fantastic business. reg Clements launched the practice in partnership with his wife, Val, in 1996. At the time he had been working for a large national hearing aid retailer and was motivated by the strong belief that he could do a better job for the clientele as an independent practitioner. Some twenty years on he is not shaken in this belief which was recently vindicated by the results of a Which report concerning hearing care provision, wherein the independent sector (often small service providers such as ourselves) outperformed both the NHS and all the large national chains. This report is readily available online or in the Which magazine and you can read more about it on our blog. al Clements has been involved in the practice since its inception in 1996 and is a now co director with Greg. Self effacingly, she is often heard to say that she is not the "technical one" and in so doing she is deferring to Greg. This is not at all a true

reflection of her abilities and she is a frequent and keen co-participant (with Greg) at educational events and seminars, Recently notable were her attendances at the Unitron professional development events in Vienna and at the Unite University in Manchester, with specific interest in a seminar on small business branding. The most important thing to Greg and Val is good customer service and it must remain personal. In this respect they believe they have a competitive advantage over some of their larger rivals. It's only Val and Greg so you will only ever be dealing with either or both of us. You get to know them and they get to know you.

Researchers are continually finding new ways to fight cancer. Recent advances in so-called immunotherapy are being used in some cases of advanced bowel cancer. Manufactured antibodies (which we normally use to fight infections) “search and destroy cancer cells by recognising abnormal proteins on their coat and killing them. This method is being used along with standard chemotherapy. Of course, the main treatment for bowel cancer is to remove the affected part of gut by an operation.

Sometimes this can even be done with laparoscopic or “key-hole surgery. More people are being cured of this through early detection, either with bowel screening kits or people reporting signs sooner to their doctor. These early signs particularly apply to over-50’s and include a change in poo lasting more than 4 weeks, bleeding, ongoing stomach pains, weight loss, or feeling tired or pale. It’s best not to ignore these signs, so if there is a problem, your doctor can quickly get to the bottom of it!

In Scots law the basis for division of assets upon divorce is fair sharing. Fair sharing is regarded as equal, with consideration of certain principles and special circumstances. As a family lawyer, I often have clients who are entirely financially reliant on their spouse and have no real sense of what matrimonial assets are held in their partner's name or even what is jointly owned. Reaching a financial agreement requires a full and frank disclosure of ALL matrimonial assets and liabilities by both parties. The starting point is for both parties to declare all property they are aware of in their sole and joint names. However, this does not always happen and one party may attempt to "hide" assets.

In the event you believe your spouse has not declared all assets fully then there are certain tools provided by the Administration of Justice (Scotland) Act 1972 whereby the court can grant an order requiring assets to be disclosed. This is known as a Specification of Documents and can be served on anyone reasonably suspected of holding, or having, the assets. Upon service of the court order, the haver must provide the requested information. The haver may be a bank, accountant, individual etc. It is therefore not easy, and certainly not advisable, to hide matrimonial property.

Hear a talk on Harnessing Running Water: Watermills in Scotland, Baldernock and Milngavie

The annual Local History week returns to east Dunbartonshire with a host of interesting events and exhibitions for all ages to enjoy. The region’s heritage and history groups are inviting the public to celebrate history, heritage and archaeology in partnership with the EDLC Archives & Local Studies team. Local History Week takes place nationwide from March 4 to 11 and aims to increase awareness of local history and encourage all members of the community to take part. In Bearsden, an exhibition at Bearsden Library from March 4 to April 1 reveals The Story of the Bearsden Shark. Visit the display during library opening hours to find out more about the fossilised

shark, which was found by Stan Wood beside Manse Burn in 1982. The shark lived some 330 million years ago and the exhibition by Bearsden Shark Group tells the story of the shark’s history, discovery, site location and other fascinating details. The Antonine Wall is the focus of an illustrated talk by Jim Walke, also at Bearsden Library, on Monday March 13 at 7.30pm. The presentation will reveal the organisation involved in building the Roman frontier, which passes through Bearsden, its garrison forts, military installations and what survives today.

There are Local History Week events in Milngavie, too. The Mills of Milngavie and District is an exhibition at Milngavie Heritage Centre in Milngavie Town Hall, from March 4 to 11 inclusive, except Sunday March 5 and Wednesday March 8. From 10am to 4pm you can see a display of photographs, plans and drawings of mills in the Milngavie area. A talk entitled Harnessing Running Water: Watermills in Scotland, Baldernock and Milngavie takes place on March 8, from 7.30pm to 9pm, at The Fraser Centre in Milngavie. Other events take place in Twechar, Kirkintilloch, Torrance and Bishopbriggs. Find out on 0141 777 3142 or libraries@eastdunbarton.gov.uk

Blue Badge turn-round

raIsIng the flag for lgBt

The council has exempted Blue Badge holders from parking charges in East Dunbartonshire town centre car parks. While the charges remain for all other drivers, Blue Badge holders should follow the guidelines of the Traffic Regulation Order, which means they do not need to display a parking ticket. Charges were previously introduced in July in seven car parks in Bearsden, Milngavie and Kirkintilloch. Councillor Alan Moir, Convener of Development and Regeneration, said: “This is great news for Blue Badge holders and allows them to park for free, in a disabled bay or not. “Remember too, that the fi rst two hours of parking are free for everyone. For more information, see www.eastdunbarton.gov.uk/ residents/parking

Council Leader Rhondda Geekie was joined by representatives of the Equality Engagement Group and local LGBT Youth groups. Youth groups for LGBT+ young people meet every week. Making a will isn’t an easy subject to discuss, but it is a very important one. People either don't want to think about making a will or are worried about the cost, but planning ahead and making a will ensures that when you die your estate is shared according to your wishes. A will is the only way to make sure your savings and possessions go to the people and causes that you care about. Firstly, it’s very important that you choose your executors well. These are the people who'll look after the financial process when you die. They're also the people who will sort out finances – such as paying off the mortgage and/or other debts out of your estate.

I always recommend you use a professional. Although you can make a DIY will, it is recommended to seek professional legal advice from a qualified and regulated solicitor. As well as ensuring your final wishes are met, solicitors can advise you on how to make the most of the available inheritance tax allowance. It is important to remember that if you don’t write a will, everything you own will be shared out in a standard way defined by the law – which isn’t always the way you might want. If you would like any further advice please call us on 0141 249 0574 and we will be happy to help.

Take the pain out of

20%

OFF O ven & Carpet

Back pain is a common health problem for adults – and a leading cause of impairment. Now research reveals children are being affected, too. In the UK, 40% of 11 to 16 year olds are reported to have suffered from back or neck pain and in most cases this is a direct result of using a laptop or computer, tablet or smart phone. Carrying heavy schoolbags and a lack of exercise also contribute to the problem. With this in mind, Bearsden Chiropractic, which sees a rising number of young people for back and neck issues, believes we should be teaching kids better computer habits.

“For example, a new study found iPads and phones put three times as much strain on our neck muscles than desktop computers. “We now see many more people, including teenagers, who complain of a sore neck, shoulder tension and headaches related to neck strain. Others suffer with ‘ipad neck’ or ‘text neck’, which are caused by looking down or forward at a screen for extended periods. “This position loads the discs in the neck and puts a lot of strain on the neck muscles and

ligaments, which can over time cause neck injury.” While Bearsden Chiropractic offers treatment and exercises to help to ease and correct the symptoms caused by use of modern technology, prevention is a far better approach. Mette says: “There are lots of different tips that we can suggest to help children – and adults – to stop back and neck pain occurring in the first place. This includes ensuring that people sit properly and use computers and smartphones for a sensible period of time each day.”

computer use 10 tips for healthy computer use Follow this advice to help your child avoid back and neck pain caused by the use of modern technology. > Ensure the chair fits the child correctly and they adopt an upright position when sitting, rather than slouching. An ergonomic back cushion, pillow or a rolled up towel placed in the small of the back helps with back support. > Check there is two inches between the front edge of the seat and the back of the knees. > Knees should be positioned at a 90 to 120 degree angle. Legs should not dangle, but be supported by a box or stool. > Position the computer monitor so the top of the screen is at the child’s eye level. > Ensure there is adequate lighting to reduce eye strain. > Make sure the computer mouse is close to the keyboard and to the edge of the table to prevent the child from sitting with an outstretched arm.

He says: “The college course prepared me for industry standard work, taught me how to act like a graphic designer, how to be a graphic designer and how to approach people as a graphic designer. “The course has pretty much set me up for life and has given me the upper hand as I continue my studies at university.” Find out more about courses and how to apply at www.westcollegescotland.ac.uk

New ideas for the mag? Household Tips So many people tell us that they keep their Community Advertiser all month because it is chock full of local information from What’s On to useful ads for local trades and services. We’re asking our readers if there’s anything more you’d find handy. With our bumper 36-page editions we have room for regular slots which could enhance the mag as a month long information source. We already carry essential numbers for local services and contacts for most if not all support groups. What else?

Would it be useful to publish the tide tables for sailors, sunset and sunrise times, church services or bus times? Or how about healthy living tips or a selection of the best of What’s On from our sister magazines in Dumbarton & Vale of Leven and Helensburgh & Lomond? We say: “It’s a community magazine and we want what you want. So if you’ve got any thoughts we’d love to hear from you.” Also as we mentioned last month we’re always on the lookout for stories. So whether it is new ideas for the mag, events, information about your club or organisation or a story about a local person going over and above, please get in touch.

CHOPPING ONIONS

#1

To prevent your eyes watering while chopping onions, wipe the chopping board with white vinegar (which won't affect the taste of the onions).

OPENING TIGHT JARS

#2

Use rubber bands to help open a jar easily: place one around the jar lid and another around the middle of the glass. The rubber provides friction to prevent your hands from slipping.

GOOD

COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.

But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:

"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."

"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
