group makes members glad to be grey one member who told us: “ I knew no one when I moved to Helensburgh but after joining Grey Matters it can take me an hour to get a newspaper because of the people I meet in the street.”

Grey Matters first met in April 2012 with just eight members in attendance, now approaching its fifth birthday it is Helensburgh’s most successful forum for senior citizens. Over 240 people have attended the sessions. Its members have quizzed everyone from councillors and MSPs to local journalists at their regular meetings. But it is not just a thirst for knowledge that is satisfied by this organisation. Grey Matters combats social isolation, which is more damaging to an older person's health than an unhealthy life of smoking and drinking. Grey Matters has been nominated for an Age Scotland Award,

members will be attending the Age Scotland Awards in Perth on 29th March. In fact the group regularly have day trips and weekends away. Last year they visited Edinburgh, Blackpool, West Midlands Safari Park and Cadbury World to name just a few. Alison Gildea from Argyll and Bute Third Sector Interface (TSI) tells the CA: “ It was formed after a scoping exercise within the community. The findings

Grey Matters is not funded directly, but is supported by staff from Argyll and Bute TSI’s 1000 Voices Team who are funded by the NHS and the Big Lottery. The team is there to help older people get the most out of life by breaking down barriers and facilitating connections.

Alison adds: “ We welcome speakers each week from MSPs and Councillors to national and local organisations. We have taken part in training such as Dementia Friends and Heartstart.

were that older people wanted somewhere to meet at the weekend when most services stopped, they wanted something to look forward to every week, they wanted to have a ‘voice’ in the community. They wanted to meet new people and to learn about what’s going on in their community.”

Grey Matters was likened by another member to the TV programme ‘That’s Life’ She said: “Grey Matters is fun, though we campaign and raise awareness. All that’s missing is the talking dog! “

RNLI seek ÂŁ20K to train local crews Helensburgh Lifeboat station has launched a funding appeal to help train the crews who are on call 24/7 and prepared to drop everything and risk their lives to save others. Helensburgh RNLI is to get a replacement Atlantic 85 class inshore rescue lifeboat towards the end of 2017. It is 8.5 metres long and takes a crew of four compared to the existing three person crew boat. It has more complex equipment than the current boat and a considerable amount of crew re-training is required. The estimated cost of this training is ÂŁ20,000. The RNLI’s spokesman Keith Shipman said: “ Our lifesaving work is essential, often difficult and sometimes dangerous. That’s why RNLI provide crew

members with first-class training, equipment, guidance and support. Helensburgh lifeboat crew train together every week, at sea and ashore. “Crew training is a continuous process and the learning never stops. Training costs ÂŁ20,000 per year. Helensburgh Lifeboat Station have launched an appeal to raise ÂŁ20,000 over the next 12 months to fund crew training which this year will include additional training following the arrival of the new Atlantic 85 later in the year.â€? Weekly RNLI training exercises

focus on teamwork, technical competence and safe operating procedures covering everything from boat-handling, search and rescue, and navigation, to radar training, radio communications and casualty care. RNLI Helensburgh can arrange visits for individuals and groups of all ages and endeavour to tailor the experience to suit the group. Typically visits last for about one hour or more and can include a tour of the building and its facilities and a chance to climb on board the Lifeboat. The RNLI ask for donations via JustGiving. Your details are safe and it's the most efficient way to donate - saving time and cutting costs for the charity. www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ HelensburghLifeboatAppeal2017

restoration underway The next stages of the multi million pound regeneration of the town’s public park will begin this month as the wide-ranging restoration of Hermitage Park gathers pace. Hawthorn Heights Ltd, the contractors, moved on site mid-February to set up their site compound and begin Phase One, now well underway, which involves putting up temporary fencing for the tree works, tree felling and removal of roots and demolition of the toilet block. Fiona Baker, Chair of the Friends adds: “ We have launched a new information leaflet with details of opportunities for volunteering and getting involved in the park at the start of works ceremony. The menu style leaflet will be distributed at various local outlets including Helensburgh Library.”

Ecotourism launch A new ecotourism project for Loch Lomond and the Clyde Sea Lochs has been launched by Friends of Loch Lomond and The Trossachs. The independent conservation and heritage charity for the national park area has appointed a project manager.

Phase Two will see workers start to excavate pathways, install scaffolding to the War Memorial and begin restoration of the Memorial. In partnership with Argyll and Bute Council, the Friends marked the start of the construction works in Hermitage Park with a small ceremony and tea and cakes for

It is always nice to hear about something working properly - So it is good to report on the excellent assessment given to Abbeyfield. Abbeyfield provides a housing support service to ten residents in a large detached house. The service is for older people who require a minimal amount of support. Each has an en-suite room, some have a lounge too. Communal facilities include a lounge, dining room, laundry and two small kitchens for use by residents although main meals are cooked for them and the residents are consulted on menu choices. In an unannounced inspection by the Care Inspectorate Abbeyfield was judged grade 6 excellent,

the top grade. We’re told by the residents that this is the first time that any of Abbeyfield care facilities in the UK have received such a high result. They added: “The food is marvellous, it is stress free living and the staff show us such respect”. The Care Inspectorate said: “ The high quality of management identified at the last inspection continues. Tenants, staff and trustees all praised the improvements in service since the current manager came into post. www.abbeyfield.com or Facebook: Abbeyfield Helensburgh Society

Helensburgh and Lomond Carers SCIO is looking for volunteer befrienders. Volunteering is a very positive experience for those involved and befriending is no exception. A befriender usually spends a couple of hours enjoying the company of someone who is being cared for by a family member, a friend or a neighbour. Befriending can include an expenses paid outing to a local café for lunch or a drive in the country thanks to funding from supporters. Whilst the befriender is there, the carer can enjoy a well-deserved spell of ‘me time’, catching up on previously enjoyed pastimes. contact: admin@helensburghcarer-support.org www.helensburgh-carersupport.org

Tribute to wartime base and crew It returned to the Suffolk port when hostilities ceased, but during wartime years Catalina flying boats were a common sight on the Gareloch.

A permanent tribute to air bases and personnel in Helensburgh and Rhu is planned the Helensburgh Heritage Trust has revealed. The granite memorial will be in Kidston Park. The memorial is part of a national programme by the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust, which has erected over 50 memorials so far. It will commemorate Helensburgh Airfield (Rhu Seaplane Base and RAF Helensburgh and Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment Helensburgh) as well as the personnel and units who served there. Donald Fullarton, secretary of the Helensburgh Heritage Trust has been pursuing the venture in conjunction with the airfields trust. He explained: “It was inspired by retired Merseyside newspaper editor Robin Bird who has sourced the vast majority of the Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment material for the

two books he has written. “Robin and I have been very keen and have campaigned for several years for a memorial to those MAEE personnel who lost their lives, but had been unsuccessful until the conservation trust appeared on the scene last year.” The memorial would be 1.2m high – an application for planning permission has been submitted to Argyll and Bute Council. The Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment closed after World War II, known as RAF Helensburgh, it operated primarily with flying boats after moving north from Felixstowe in 1939.

ORGANIC ARCHITECTS Do you want to sub-divide a plot, build a new house or extension ?

The work done at the establishment was crucial to winning the battle against the U Boat, and also included work done on the Dambusters ‘bouncing bomb’,” says an article on Helensburgh Heritage Trust’s website, which has a wealth of other articles on the subject. The Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club was the officers’ mess and nearby Rosslea Hall Hotel was MAEE headquarters. At any given time around 375 personnel served at RAF Helensburgh in RAF, WAAF and civilian roles.

SSAFA is looking for motivated individuals, keen to give back to those who have given so much for us, to join its team of dedicated caseworkers. SSAFA tell us: “Caseworkers spend their time visiting clients, often former Service men and women, living in their local community. During these visits they provide friendly advice and discuss the support our clients might need. Once the Caseworker has assessed these needs, they will then help clients to access the right assistance, for example financial support. SSAFA Dunbartonshire provides practical, emotional and financial

support to anyone who has ever served, and their families too. Volunteering with SSAFA is special because you get to see first hand the difference you make to people’s lives. The branch extends from Arrochar to Kirkintilloch, supporting those local people who are currently serving or have ever served in our Armed Forces and their dependants, from the elderly war veteran or widow facing hardship, to members of

Each year the charity helps hundreds of people in Helensburgh and Lomond and West Dunbartonshire. They raise funds locally and all the money raised locally is used locally. SSAFA Dunbartonshire say “ Whenever our ex-Servicemen or their dependants need us, we’ll do whatever we can to help. Our clients are changing and so are their needs. Younger veterans are increasingly likely to come forward for our assistance. The move into civilian life can be a difficult one with common issues including housing, relationships, employment and mental health. If you would like further information on SSAFA, whether as a client or a potential volunteer, please contact Dunbartonshire@ ssafa.org.uk 0745 303 1443

The Cove and Kilcreggan Youth Cafè faces a funding gap so chairperson and local hero Susie Will is hoping more backers will chip in with a £1 a week donation. The cafè has around 50 youngsters who come regularly, it faces several repairs and needs to expand. It is also forming a board to explore a community empowerment takeover of a church hall which has been abandoned for eight years. Susie said: “We didn’t get a big grant and are struggling a bit awaiting another to kick in and we don’t want to close. We have come such a long way. The Cafè has been running for five years now in that time we have saved the old tennis pavilion, replaced decking, painted, rewired, replaced windows and toilets, new kitchen water heaters and wall heaters. “We are members of Youth Scotland and pay a very competent and much loved Youth Worker a sessional wage, two sessions per week and hoping to add a 9-12yrs session.”

Susie Wills has been volunteering in and around Cove and Kilcreggan for more than 40 years. She won a Regional Hero award at the annual Argyll and Bute Volunteer of the Year celebration. She founded the youth cafe which provides fun activities for young people on the peninsula. She has been tireless in her fundraising efforts for the café ever since. The Cafè now has a dance group, a football team and there’s integration ongoing with the sailing club, West Dunbartonshire Football and Cove Park Artists retreat. Susie says: “ We’ve built a skate park for under £30,000 which is pretty clever. We have young people coming from Helensburgh and all over the peninsula to our open door hospitality, and we always have a trained and supportive ear for any young person with a problem.”

Currently the team have repairs to do, also they need to complete the skate park aesthetically, and then they hope to offer some skateboarding lessons once the Spring kicks in. “ We don’t have enough money and we don’t have enough room.

Rhu and Shandon Village Hall has been serving the local community since 1905. Now it is being relaunched after a complete transformation. The Hall committee invites anyone interested to come along on Saturday March 4 between 12 noon and 3.00 pm to see the work for themselves. Sue Thornley from the management committee told the CA : “ There will be activities for children of all ages and displays by groups using the hall and meeting rooms so you can see what is currently on offer. Tea, coffee and home baking will be available.” All the work at the Hall, which includes full central heating and redecoration, has been

made possible thanks to generous funding from the Forces Covenant Fund, the Kenneth Barge Memorial Trust and fundraising events in the local community. Sue adds: “Our thanks also go to Argyll and Bute Council who, in partnership with the Management Committee, have organised and carried out the heating contract to provide the community with a warm and welcoming meeting place. No longer will we have to worry about coming to the hall on cold winter’s evenings!” https://rhuhall.org/

IDEA

We’re asking our readers if there’s anything more you’d find handy. With our bumper 36-page editions we have room for regular slots which could enhance the mag as a month long information source. We already carry essential numbers for local services and contacts for most if not all support groups. What else?

Would it be useful to publish the tide tables for sailors, sunset and sunrise times, church services or bus times? Or how about healthy living tips or a selection of the best of What’s On from our sister magazines in Bearsden & Milngavie and Dumbarton & Vale of Leven?

We say: “It’s a community magazine and we want what you want. So if you’ve got any thoughts we’d love to hear from you. Also as we mentioned last month we’re always on the lookout for stories. So whether it is new ideas for the mag, events, information about your club or organisation or a story about a local person going over and above, please get in touch.

MARCH 2017 – What's Up Doc?

Top team READY TO host valuation day Lomond and Argyll Decorative and Fine Art Society (LADFAS) has teamed up with The National Trust for Scotland and Auctioneers Lyon and Turnbull to host an antiques valuation day. It takes place at the Hill House, Helensburgh on Saturday 25th March from 11am - 4pm. People are invited to bring up to five items for valuation. Experts will be available in decorative and applied arts, paintings, ceramics, furniture (portable only), jewellery, books, manuscripts and Asian art. Charge for valuations is £10, including house entry and both tearoom and gift shop will be open. Now Celebrating its 20th Anniversary and welcoming new members, LADFAS has a current membership of 300. Meeting monthly, in the Victoria Hall, it offers a programme of lectures given by expert speakers. Each year, it arranges visits, locally and abroad, as well as

study days. Members take part in Church Recording and Heritage projects, aiming to ensure that our heritage has a future through conservation, preservation and recording. Spokesman Ian Bone says: “ Next May, we rebrand to become The Arts Society, Lomond and Argyll; The Logo will change but the programme of lectures will continue to provide opportunities for members to discover and connect with the arts as well as each other. “

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: SEARCH AND DESTROY... Researchers are continually finding new ways to fight cancer. Recent advances in so-called immunotherapy are being used in some cases of advanced bowel cancer. Manufactured antibodies (which we normally use to fight infections) “search and destroy” cancer cells by recognising abnormal proteins on their coat and killing them. This method is being used along with standard chemotherapy. Of course, the main treatment for bowel cancer is to remove the affected part of gut by an operation.

Sometimes this can even be done with laparoscopic or “key-hole” surgery. More people are being cured of this through early detection, either with bowel screening kits or people reporting signs sooner to their doctor. These early signs particularly apply to over-50’s and include a change in poo lasting more than 4 weeks, bleeding, ongoing stomach pains, weight loss, or feeling tired or pale. It’s best not to ignore these signs, so if there is a problem, your doctor can quickly get to the bottom of it!

The Helensburgh Tree Trust has planted some new trees on West Rossdhu Drive. These new birch trees fill the gaps in the verge where older trees have died.

At a recent Pack meeting, the 1st Rhu Cub Scout Pack presented a cheque for £199 to David Dodson of the Lomond Mountain Rescue Team. The children raised the money by holding a sponsored silence, an event that really challenged them, and their families were extremely generous. Mr Dodson spent an evening with the Pack, and showed them his rescue vehicle and the equipment the team uses on the hills.

The Trust say: “ In time the hope is to interplant the birch trees with Serbian Spruce. This is only possible due to the wide nature of these particular verges where larger trees have room to grow and enhance the streetscape. “Nearby residents are delighted with these new additions and we hope they will help ensure the new trees are nurtured and kept clear of grass and weed growth around the base. Queen Victoria kicked off the tradition of wearing white on your wedding day and by the 20th century the chaste hue was the colour of choice for brides.

This month: DISCLOSURE OF MATRIMONIAL ASSETS

To prevent your eyes watering while chopping onions, wipe the chopping board with white vinegar (which won't affect the taste of the onions).

OPENING TIGHT JARS What’s holding you back in life?

BA LLB

Use rubber bands to help open a jar easily: place one around the jar lid and another around the middle of the glass. The rubber provides friction to prevent your hands from slipping.

In Scots law the basis for division of assets upon divorce is fair sharing. Fair sharing is regarded as equal, with consideration of certain principles and special circumstances. As a family lawyer, I often have clients who are entirely financially reliant on their spouse and have no real sense of what matrimonial assets are held in their partner's name or even what is jointly owned. Reaching a financial agreement requires a full and frank disclosure of ALL matrimonial assets and liabilities by both parties. The starting point is for both parties to declare all property they are aware of in their sole and joint names. However, this does not always happen and one party may attempt to "hide" assets. In the event you believe

your spouse has not declared all assets fully then there are certain tools provided by the Administration of Justice (Scotland) Act 1972 whereby the court can grant an order requiring assets to be disclosed. This is known as a Specification of Documents and can be served on anyone reasonably suspected of holding, or having, the assets. Upon service of the court order, the haver must provide the requested information. The haver may be a bank, accountant, individual etc. It is therefore not easy, and certainly not advisable, to hide matrimonial property.

Glitter and glitz at DANCE fest JOB VACANCY The town’s biggest event that few people have heard of begins this month when the British Association of Teachers of Dancing welcome hundreds of dancers and their families. The event is the Helensburgh Stage Festival and Scottish Theatre Championships. Graham Craig from the Victoria Halls says: The BATD have been coming to the Victoria Halls for around 20 years, there are around 300 dancers, parents and assorted family members in the halls each day. “Every room is in use as a changing room and everything is covered in glitter. Dancers and their families come from all over Scotland to compete in the Scottish Championships.

The BATD Theatre Dance Council International 2017 Scottish Theatre Championships at Helensburgh Stage Festival runs from 31st March - 9th April. Organisers tell us: “ It is a top event in the dance calendar. The stages host a glittering array of talent with competitors in Juvenile, Junior and Senior Tap, Ballet, Modern, Song and Dance putting on performances of the highest possible standards. Local dance luminaries involved

include Ian Mcleod who started his professional career as a soloist with Scottish Ballet before going into the theatre world where he was a principal dancer in London’s West End and performed in many TV shows, films and music videos. He has been teaching and choreographing for the last 30 years.

'Seems like

we're in

GOOD

COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.

But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:

"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."

"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
