The information panel on the Comet engine flywheel has been replaced with a new shield shaped panel which is part of the recently revamped Clyde Sea Lochs Trail. The information about Bell and his revolutionary 1812 paddle steamer ‘Comet’ has been transferred from the old illegible information panel which was partly obscuring the Comet engine flywheel on display at the East Bay Esplanade. “Removing the old panel had been on our to do list for quite
a while,” said Heritage Trust member John Urquhart, “and the kind offer from Alex Mather Hire Ltd of a grinder to remove the old panel was just what was needed to make the work possible. Folk passing by on East Clyde Street can see the flywheel properly now and they can once again read all about Henry Bell’s pioneering contribution to steam navigation on the new panel.” The black object on the ground next to the flywheel in our picture is the anvil used by local blacksmith David McMurrich when he worked on the Comet. His smithy was at 75 East Clyde Street (where the SAS Garage now is) and Bell would regularly help McMurrich there.
The former James Street Play Park is undergoing an upgrade to create a community garden. An event will be held in April ( date TBC) to show the public what progress has been achieved so far and to encourage community support. Sponsors, or part sponsors, are one of the many elements needed to fulfil the garden plan. Sandy Kerr, Chairman Garden Committee said:” If not used, this space could be lost to the community. We are hopeful that, by providing a pleasant facility for community use, it will remain an attractive public space for many years to come. Contact sandykerr1@btinternet. com (675421)

Beach rubbish mountain If ever there was a case of pictures being worth a thousand words this is it. Rubbish collected by volunteers at Helensburgh and Rhu.
Park Progress
Braeholm Anne of Loudounville plans Jewellery Repairs
Work is now well underway in Hermitage Park with the tree felling and pruning work progressing well and the demolition of the old toilet block.
Plans have been revealed to turn the Braeholm building into 12 flats.
Time lapse cameras have been installed to capture the whole project on film in addition to a standard photographic record.
A call went out for volunteers recently and the results are astounding. A mountain of beach rubbish picked up and bagged at Helensburgh and a remarkable amount from a small area of Rhu.
The timber from the tree felling is being kept on site to season and will be recycled for various things in the park such as structural elements, craft activities and, if suitable timber is available, for table tops in the new pavilion.
Volunteers were widely praised on social media pages and the point was made that there is still a lot lying about and it should be done again soon. If it's cleared regularly it would not be as much of an eyesore.
Scaffolding is going up at the War Memorial and specialist conservation works will be undertaken during April.
Last year charity Aggie Westons announced it would be closing the family and accommodation centre on East Montrose Street, and this went ahead despite a petition being launched in a bid to save it. Now James Lough has applied for planning permission and listed building consent to alter the building, including a change of use from care home and children’s nursery to residential flats. Formerly a nursing and maternity hospital, Braeholm provided accommodation for visiting naval personnel and to help families visiting the area to be close to loved ones.

The Anderson (Local Collection) Trust exhibition runs until June upstairs in Helensburgh Library. It focuses on the built environment of Helensburgh and the surrounding area. This encompasses not only the well known architectural gems of the Victorian period but also less significant buildings – reminders of a time when fishing and farming were the main local occupations and travel was

Glasgow that gave rise to the great expansion of the town. The resulting demand for quality dwellings attracted to this area some distinguished architects. It also attracted artists, inspired to capture the character of the town, its buildings and its surroundings. “The paintings in the Collection all have a local connection, either by subject or residency of the artist. The second issue of Helensburgh’s own irreverent comic, the Clyper, is now in production, a long time after the first which was published in October 2013.
“The family of artists living in the Portincaple area, James Kay and his daughter, Violet Kay also succeed in evoking the little changed character of the Loch Long area. Then, there was a coterie of artists, some belonging to that acclaimed group “The Glasgow Boys”, who gathered in Helensburgh to paint, among others, James Guthrie, James Whitelaw Hamilton, James Paterson, all of whom are represented in this exhibition.” Mary Jane adds: “It is not surprising that some wellloved scenes feature in paintings by more than one artist. Where possible, such paintings are displayed near each other to enable comparison between the way that different artists respond to the same view.”

tOp Guitarist tuitiON hOuse pLaN The Glasgow School of Guitar based in the apprOved West End has started classes in Helensburgh at the Mackintosh Club. They are run by local resident David Philp.
He tells us: “ I have been teaching the guitar for over 20 years in secondary schools, primary schools, community centres and privately, covering a wide variety of styles. I am a graduate of both the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, as a classical guitarist, and the Glasgow School of Art.
desire for guitar tuition at an affordable price.
“ It became clear there is a distinct lack of instrumental tuition provided by the local council, certainly compared with other Scottish councils I have lived in and worked for. In particular guitar tuition seems the most lacking.

Plans for a major development of around 140 new homes in Cardross have been approved in principle – but the decision is far from the end of the story for the project. Despite objections from a large number of local residents, Argyll and Bute Council's planning, committee agreed to grant permission to Avant Homes' outline application to develop a site at Kirkton Farm, to the north of the village. However, the council committee decided to grant the application - but on the condition that any future detailed proposal to develop the site should come back before them for consideration, rather than being decided by council offi cials.

Book store secret IS revealed Many of us enjoy a good read but how many of us look at our books again once they are finished. Donating books is both a great way to help charities and to find an engrossing new read. The British Red Cross tell us the best kept secret in Helensburgh is their shop at 116 East Princes Street. They have been selling books for over 30 years and welcome donations of well cared for books for resale. They started from a stall down on the front then in Colquhoun Square at what subsequently became the Cut Above. It has been at the present address for 20 years. TEAM HIKE FOR KIDS The girls at legal firm Raeburn Hope are great for Wills, conveyancing, family law and much more besides – but can they walk 23 miles? That’s the leading question as an intrepid band of employees limber up for a charity hike that promises to deliver cash for children’s charities, as well as the odd blister. We’ve all seen the adverts for Kiltwalk, but the Raeburn Hope squad decided to turn good intentions into foot-slogging action, and reckon they’re now as fit as they’ll ever be for the challenge. We asked the team their feelings about setting out on such an adventure, and received some interesting answers – as well as the admission that the legal eagles

are both “excited” and “nervous”. They aim to divide the money they raise between children’s charities, and are confident generous local people will make it all worthwhile. One hardy volunteer said: “I’ve done a lot of walking, and have so far managed 21 miles – my feet are still sore!” The five ladies taking part are Kelly Mackay, Debbie McBride, Kirsteen Dunbar, Lori Henderson, and Julie Ross. It’s for a worthy cause so should one of them ask you to make a modest contribution please chip in! Donations can be made at Virgin Money, Glasgow Kiltwalk, Team – Helensburgh No Hopers or at the office.

Return of AN inspirational choir
The African Children’s Choir is making a return visit to Helensburgh. Choir 38 was here in 2012. Similarly choir 46 is composed of African children, aged 7 to 10 years old. Elizabeth Lampert whose daughter Nicola toured with the 2012 choir as a chaperone tells us: “Many have lost one or both parents through the devastation of war, famine and disease. The children melt the hearts of audiences with their charming smiles and delightful African tunes, accompanied by ethnic instrumentation. “The programme features wellloved children’s songs, hand clapping, traditional spirituals and
contemporary tunes. “ Nearly every performance is concluded with a thunderous standing ovation. A marvelous by-product of the concert is the inspiration the music brings to virtually every listener. In spite of the tragedy that has marred their young lives, the children are radiant with hope, musically gifted and wonderfully entertaining. “ The primary goal of the Choir is to raise awareness of the need of
destitute and orphaned children in Africa and to raise funds for continued development and support of the African Children’s Choir Programmes. The Choir’s international educational endeavour provides unique training for the children. Once Choir members have completed a concert tour, they will return to their homelands with the tools necessary for bettering their future. Choir 46 is coming to Helensburgh Parish Church on Tuesday 18th April. Jenny Serquinia the Choir organizer previously visited Helensburgh in September 2012 with choir 38. Elizabeth adds: “It will be lovely to welcome Jenny back and meet the new choir. Choir 46 have 18 children from Uganda 11 girls and 7 boys, they are accompanied by 8 chaperones, who are responsible for education, rehearsals and welfare. When the choir are touring they become like a family to each other. Choir 46 has been touring in America since September 2016 and this will be the children's first visit to Scotland.

APRIL 2017 – What's Up Doc?
Cove RNLI branch closure threat
What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn
This month: TUNING YOUR BODY...
The RNLI’s branch in Cove and Kilcreggan is facing the threat of closure. Established in 1982, the local branch has raised over ÂŁ16,000 for the lifeboats charity in the last five years alone. It is now in urgent need of volunteers to fill key committee positions. RNLI volunteers organise three events a year, including the flower show every August which showcases scores of entries from the best local gardeners and bakers. Chairperson Elsa Burgess told the Lochside Press news website that the annual spring tea would be the group’s final event unless new volunteers came forward soon. “Due to a number of longstanding and enthusiastic committee members standing down in recent years there is now
a very real possibility that the group may have to be dissolved, she said. “This is a coastal community made up of many enthusiastic amateur and professional sailors whom the RNLI is committed to serve, it would be tragic loss if this group, and the flower show, no longer existed. The committee is looking for members who can help as treasurer, secretary, publicity/ social media, ticket co-ordinator and vice-chair; anyone interested can call Mrs Burgess on 01436 842407 or 07803 077857
Modern car technology is becoming increasingly clever. But when I take my car for a drive, I don’t expect it to become more efficient, repair itself or become faster. Amazingly however, that’s exactly what the human body does in response to regular use, especially when it is pushed beyond its limits. Exercise: we all know it’s supposed to be good for us, but do we stop and wonder how it is that the body can adapt so well? In people of all ages, regular exercise trains the body to get more out of the
heart and lungs by increasing lung capacity, strengthening the heart and improving blood flow. It strengthens muscles and bones, fine-tunes our hormone levels, boosts immunity to infection and possibly some cancers, and gives us greater stamina and reduces tiredness. As the days get longer and brighter over the next few weeks, consider improving your body’s performance by giving it some exercise. It’s just a pity that cars haven’t quite got to our advanced level yet!

ANNAYA’S UP FOR TWO TOP AWARDS Annayas has been placed amongst the very best in Scotland having been nominated for two awards at the Scottish Curry Awards. This is the 10th annual awards of its kind and Annayas has earned two nominations in two of the top categories, Best Restaurant and Team of the Year. We contacted Annayas manager, Zak, on his thoughts on this massive achievement: “I’m delighted that we have been chosen for these prestigious awards, the team work extremely hard and we’d like to thank the staff and everyone who nominated us, this wouldn’t be possible without either.
We started Annayas nearly 3 years ago and there have been plenty of ups and downs. But to be nominated for these awards has shown us and our valued customers the hard work and high standard we aim to maintain.” Located on West Princess Street Annayas offer a wide range of curries for you to choose from in the restaurant and to take-away. Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB
This month: WHAT IS STALKING? Under the terms of the Criminal Justice and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2010, the offence of stalking is a course of conduct which causes fear or alarm. The conduct itself is wide ranging. Section 39 of the Act provides that it can include following someone; contacting, or attempting to contact a person; publishing a statement relating to, or purportedly originating from, someone; monitoring electronic communication, including e-mails; spying; giving unwanted gifts and generally acting in a way that may cause fear and alarm. Many people wrongly assume that the alarming conduct must have taken place over
a prolonged period of time in order for it to be viewed as stalking. However, it really only has to have taken place on two occasions. The crime is taken seriously by the Scottish courts and, if convicted, could result in the accused receiving a prison sentence of up to fi ve years, together with a signifi cant fi ne. No person has to put up with this type of behaviour and as well as criminal sanctions there are also civil remedies available to anyone who requires to be protected from a stalker. Anyone who considers they are being subjected to this type of abuse should contact the police or their solicitor for further advice.

GARELOCH GODDESS: For the first time in over 30 years all 16 yachts will be ready to set sail
All sixteen yachts in Gareloch One-Design class, will be ready to sail this year for the first time since 1984. And there’s a chance to crew or even own one of the legendary yachts. The boats, all named after Greek goddesses, and built by McGruers in the 1920’s, have over the years been lovingly restored by various owners.
most will be racing regularly this season. The last, Dione, was bought by the class for ÂŁ1. Badly dilapidated after being out of the water for over twenty years, it is approaching the end of a full rebuild and will be launched on July 21.
Many had been dispersed to far fl ung locations, but in the 1950s John Henderson, made it his mission to bring them all back to the Gareloch. The complete class of 16 are now sail ready, and Gareloch Convenor Peter Proctor
And that’s just one event in the Gareloch owners annual programme of racing and social activity. There are series races throughout the summer. They also team-race home and away against other classes of classic yacht in Germany, Ireland and elsewhere in the UK giving and receiving warm hospitality. Peter adds: “Gareloch people are an extremely friendly lot and after reading this piece, you may be interested in fi nding out more about us or wishing to crew. There may also be the possibility of future boat ownership in whole or in part. Dione will be on the market in a perfect state of preservation, and no doubt much sought after. 12 Week Transformation Packages for people who are too busy Call NOW for Details 01436 672204
People who don’t make time for fitness, must eventually make time for illness... Experts say our levels of inactivity have become so bad we are seriously threatening our health. A recent poll showed we are not doing enough exercise to stay healthy and one in four do none at all. The situation has become so bad we are losing years off our lives through stress related illnesses, with increased risk of cancer, heart disease, obesity and stroke. The commonest excuse is lack of time. Many of us are cramming way too much into our lives,
juggling jobs and families and so our diet suffers too. The professional team at Fitforlife understand these pressures and specialise in 12 week tailored packages, specifically designed to fit around you. Owner Angie Macfarlane says “We take time to get to know our Clients individually, so we can coach towards a happier, healthier mindset. As well as inch loss and body toning, sleep improves, stress levels decrease and confidence goes up.”

Kirk ModeratorS visit
The Moderator of the Church of Scotland has been visiting Helensburgh. The Right Rev Dr Russell Barr was told about the work of congregations, church and community projects. His visit, for a week, ends with a Songs of Praise event in Helensburgh Parish Church on Sunday, April 2, at 7.30pm to which everyone is welcome. A choir made up of representatives of all 33 congregations in the Presbytery of Dumbarton will join with the Salvation Army Band and the church’s own praise band for the evening of celebration. Dr Barr was born in Kilmarnock in 1953 and served with congregations in the Borders,
Glasgow and Greenock before becoming minister at Cramond Kirk, Edinburgh, in 1993. He is married to Margaret, and they have two children and three grandchildren. Rev David T. Young, minister at Helensburgh Parish Church, said: “We are looking forward to welcoming Dr Barr to the area. The Songs of Praise event will be a chance for everyone, not just regular church goers, to come along and enjoy an evening of singing and celebration.”
Mental Health Workshop Argyll & Bute TSI have worked with Voluntary Health Scotland to stage a mental Health and Social Support Workshop called Linking Research and Practice. It takes place on Thursday 27 April 2017 Helensburgh Parish Church 12-3pm, lunch and refreshments will be served on arrival. Social support is the everyday assistance offered by family, friends, neighbours and colleagues, as well as the help offered by many charities and support services. Lack of social support is associated with feelings of loneliness and isolation, which have been linked with poorer physical health, reduced life expectancy and a wide range of mental health problems including anxiety and depression.

GOOD
COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.
But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:
"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."
"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
