new lOCal FOOD sCheMe An innovative initiative that provides shoppers with a new way to buy a range of foods directly from local producers has arrived in Milngavie. The Food Assembly, which was launched in the UK in July 2014 and has won acclaim, has now been rolled out across the country and opened for business locally. Every week, Food Assembly customers in Milngavie can order food online from local food producers before picking it up at a local venue. All the food comes from an average distance of just 15 miles.
Gillian adds: “I’ve been involved with Food Assemblies as a customer and a producer for more than six months. It has brought my small farm full circle to what I had always set out to do, delivering local produce to local people.
reaches the right people, with food producers keeping more than 80% of sales for every product sold, compared to 15 to 20% if they supplied supermarkets. In addition, there is less food waste as all the food is ordered in advance.” Shoppers simply log on to a website and choose from a range of unique local products, such as artisan bread from The Little Sourdough Bakery; awardwinning milk and dairy produce from Katy Roger’s Dairy; yummy jams from Perthshire Preserves; high welfare rare-breed pork,
The Milngavie Assembly is organised by local farmer Gillian Mackay. She says: “Community is at the heart of The Food Assembly because it connects neighbours to farmers, neighbours to each other and everyone to their food.

“Helping people re-connect with where food comes from and how it is made, as well as introducing them to produce they may never have had access to before, is very satisfying.” The Milngavie first collection took place last month at the Fraser Centre in Douglas Street. There will be a collection every Friday going forward.
“By choosing to buy local, shoppers can support the community of Milngavie because for every £1 spent through Milngavie’s Food Assembly, 90p stays in the local economy.

Dancers from Milngavie Primary School visited and entertained members of the Friendship Circle
A local Friendship Circle was delighted to be entertained by a group of Scottish country dancers from Milngavie Primary School. Patrick Murray, part of the team who taught the class, said “The enthusiasm of the children for dancing is extraordinary. When asked for volunteers for this ‘gig’, every single one of the P7 pupils put up their hands and names had to be drawn from a hat.“
The young dancers took part in the New Kilpatrick Concert Party joining the New Kilpatrick Ceilidh Band, singers and other dancers for an afternoon and received an enthusiastic reception from the members of the well-established club.
clapping and communal singing.
Friendship Circle organiser Jennifer Donald said: “It was fantastic to have everyone along for the return of our Concert Party & especially lovely to bridge the age gap with the youngsters from Milngavie Primary School.”
Before heading back to school, Patrick explained to his classmates, tongue in cheek, “As none of us had done that there is a waiting list for anything like this before, we were Friendship Circle membership. He obviously a little nervous but the was told to register now because communal sprit and appreciation “there will possibly be one or of our audience helped us to two vacancies coming up in 60 or overcome our nerves.” 70 years’ time”.
The afternoon included rousing music, inspiring dancing, hand-
Primary 7 pupil Patrick Spence enjoyed the afternoon, which took place at the end of March. He said: “We started dancing lessons last year in preparation for the Bearsden Children’s Scottish Dancing Festival in October and this additional invitation gave us a chance to develop our demonstration skills.

An artist's impression of the new primary school, which will welcome pupils from St Andrew's and St Joseph's Primary Schools in 2018
Work on a new £10 million primary school in Bearsden is underway with plans for staff and pupils to be in for the new school year in 2018. The school will accommodate 450 pupils from St Andrew’s Primary – the site of the new school – and St Joseph’s Primary in Milngavie. The first phase, from now until the summer holidays of 2018, will see the new school being built on the western part of the St Andrew’s PS site with the existing primary school continuing to operate from the current building. When the new school opens in August 2018 both St Andrew's PS and St Joseph’s PS will close
and all children and staff from both schools will be moved in. The existing St Andrew’s building will be demolished before the creation of the new school’s pitch and play areas. Thomas Glen, depute chief executive of Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets, said: “This is an exciting time for education in East Dunbartonshire. With this new school getting underway pupils and staff can look forward to working and learning in an educational environment fi t for

The new school is the fifth to be built as part of the Council’s Primary School Improvement Programme (PSIP). The others are Lairdsland PS and Holy Trinity PS (Kirkintilloch), Lenzie Meadow PS (Lenzie) and Thomas Muir PS (Bishopbriggs). Mr Glen added: “Feedback from other schools that have been built through the programme has been very positive and encouraging. The response to the modern, bright, well-equipped and well-resourced buildings that have been delivered so far has been excellent and I can’t wait to see this new school in Bearsden take shape.”

hOw tO Get a sweatY hUG A former Milngavie school pupil has published an exciting new book, Sweaty Hugs, which reveals “how free fitness is changing lives”. Kathleen Anderson, who attended Milngavie PS and Douglas Academy, was a self-confessed fi tness-phobe when she first came across the free American fitness movement called the November Project. Kathleen was studying for a Masters Degree in Corporate and Organisational Communications in Boston and needed a way to meet new people. She came across the November Project in a local park. She says: “I was totally taken aback by the free fi tness sessions that are organised several times a week at 6.30am in various outdoors locations in my local area. I didn’t even like keep-fi t until then but I was drawn in by the fun style of the mass outdoors workouts. I became hooked and ended up making lots of friends through the sessions.”
Kathleen Anderson, author of 'Sweaty Hugs'
Kathleen decided to focus her thesis on the November Project, which led to her writing the book, Sweaty Hugs. She says: “I feel so strongly about how free group fi tness can change people’s lives for the better that I wanted to write a book about it. I want to spread the word and to encourage other people to give it a try.” Launched by two friends in America, the November Project has now launched in many countries worldwide. The first

Bearsden Academy's Mia Padmanabhan (left) celebrates her second place in the Tristar 3 Duathlon
Three local youngsters from Glasgow Triathlon Club were rewarded for a great morning of racing recently with podium positions. The popular Stirling Duathlon this year included a sprint duathlon and the Scottish Championship Duathlon for adults, as well as a series of youth races. A duathlon comprises a run, then a bike ride and then a run to finish. The youngsters are split into age categories. Under-10s run 600m, cycle 900m followed by another 600m run. Those aged 11 to 16 run 900m, ride 2700m and then run 900m.

Residents are being reminded to ensure they vote in Local Government Elections on Thursday May 4. The elections are important because they will decide the councillors who will represent the views of local communities for the next four years. In East Dunbartonshire there are seven wards. These include Milngavie, Bearsden North, Bearsden South, Bishopbriggs North and Campsie, Bishopbriggs South, Lenzie and Kirkintilloch South, Kirkintilloch East and North and Twechar. In each of the local wards, Milngavie, Bearsden North and Bearsden South, three councillors will be elected from a list of six cross-party candidates. The closing date for candidate nominations was March 29.
Polling stations include Milngavie Town Hall, All Saints Church Hall, Westerton Public Hall, Killermont Parish Church and the primary schools of Clober, St. Joseph’s, Baljaffray, Mosshead, St. Andrew’s, Castlehill, Bearsden and Colquhoun. Many schools will be closed on election day. The deadline has passed for registering for a postal vote so residents are being encouraged to make sure they turn out at polling stations on the day between 7am and 10pm to cast their vote. See www.eastdunbarton.gov. uk/council/elections-and-voting/ local-government-elections-2017 for more information.

Studies show that 1 in 10 people over 65 always feel lonely, with up to 4 in 10 admitting they sometimes feel lonely. Loneliness, especially as we get older, is a growing problem, linked with increased risk of dying earlier, heart disease, stroke, hypertension, dementia and depression. It might even be as harmful as smoking or obesity. What can we do about it? Firstly, if you feel lonely, try to do something about it. Invite friends or family, consider volunteering or joining a group such as “Men’s Sheds, RVS or a club, and try to eat well and exercise to offset the
health risks. If possible speak to people in the area about local groups which might suit you. As a community we should look out for those who may be lonely, and make an effort to talk, listen or point people in the right direction. Local Health and Social care has identified it as an issue worth working to improve. Paul McCartney may not have know where they all came from, but we know lonely people may be living just next door! “While we will ensure that we have the professional support in place to meet the identifi ed needs of our arrivals, we will not know what they will want exactly from the local community until they are here. We must protect and respect the privacy of these vulnerable people when they arrive in East Dunbartonshire.”
Almost 100 residents attended a Refugee Information Meeting in Bearsden to find out about plans for an arrival of Syrian refugees.
It was confirmed at the meeting that the accommodation provided would be furnished and equipped for the arrivals and anyone who felt that they had particular skills or support to offer can register that with the council. Mrs Bauer added: “We are not looking to collect donations or establish a local fund for refugees because we already have the resources to meet the needs of the arrivals. If people want to help they can support already established charities and organisations.”
The Council has initially agreed to accommodate four families and four unaccompanied asylum seeking children in East Dunbartonshire.
Save the Children showed a powerful film that summarised some of the ordeals faced by the children and families fleeing Syria.
The meeting included representatives from the council and Health & Social Care Partnership teams, as well as the charity Save the Children Scotland and Citizens Advice.
The meeting was chaired by Evonne Bauer, Strategic Lead for Place and Community Planning, who said: “It was apparent from the numbers at the meeting that The refugees are expected to arrive this summer. people are keen to support the

NOW IS THE TIME TO INVEST SAVE THE BEES
SOCIALISING
EDUCATION
Bees are vital to our economy and to the environment because they are such excellent pollinators. Many farmers depend on bees to ensure good crops, however our bee population is at risk. Planting a garden is an excellent way to ensure that the bees and other beneficial pollinating insects survive in your area. Although many common garden vegetables have flowers that attract bees, planting flowers and herbs in your garden will make them even happier.
It seems that few people know their neighbours anymore, but when you spend time outside in your garden you may find yourself chatting with the neighbour over the garden fence. And once you realise you have planted more green beans or tomatoes than you could ever use, you’ll be surprised how delighted people are when they see you come their way! Growing food also brings families together in the garden and at the table by encouraging more home-cooked meals.
If you have kids, there is no better way to introduce them to healthy habits than to involve them in growing a garden. Children are much more likely to want to eat vegetables they have grown themselves. Most kids are excited to watch tiny seeds sprout and grow and home grown fruit and vegetables are more nutrient-dense than conventional produce, with greater taste and crisp intense flavours. It’s a great antidote to sedentary, indoor lifestyles benefitting the body and fulfilling the spirit.

IN YOUR HOME AND GARDEN BE EFFICIENT
FRESHEN UP
EXTENSIONS
Is it time to upgrade your appliances, windows and other energy impacting parts of your house? Upgrading your home with energy efficient features will not only save you money each month on your utility bill. For example, a washing machine with an AA+ efficiency rating can use up to 70% less energy, and therefore costs 70% less to run, than a G rated machine. It may also make the home more attractive to younger & more energy conscious buyers.
There are many reasons to consider updating your home and getting creative with remodeling can be an exciting venture. It is an opportunity to express your individuality and style. Sometimes changing the colours of your home interior or remodelling old rooms, can have the effect of changing your outlook on your home and living environment. The money that you decide to spend will be a long term investment in the comfort and enjoyment of your house.
Home extension is a great way to create new space. With the cost of moving home getting ever costlier, recent years has seen an increase in the number of cramped householders choosing instead to stay put and free up some space by extending their property or converting their loft. By building a conservatory or extension to an existing property, or by converting the loft, householders can bypass the time, effort and numerous fees associated with moving.

This month: CLAIMING MIS-SOLD PPI Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) policies were sold to around 45 million consumers between 1990 and 2010. The intention was to provide cover for people who lost their job or became too ill to work and were unable to maintain loan, credit or store card repayments. It has now been recognised that the policy was mis-sold to many of these customers as they did not need it nor were they ever likely to be eligible to even claim it. unclaimed and the Financial Conduct Authority have now set a deadline by which time all claims must be submitted, being 29th August 2019. It is free to make a claim and many online forums can assist with doing it yourself. You can start by checking old loan or mortgage statements. It is important to be aware that claims can be made even after the victim has deceased as any money owed will form part of the estate. In the event there is any likelihood you have been mis-sold PPI then it is essential you do not miss the deadline as any claim submitted after that day will not be considered.

Classes FOR ‘Cani’ OwneRs Dogs and their owners are being invited to get fit by joining weekly canicross sessions this summer at Mugdock Country Park.
Lindsay first spotted the sport at a dog-sledding event in the south of Scotland some eight years ago and realised it would be the perfect pursuit for her young Alaskan malamute. At this time, Lindsay had a full-time job and preferred the gym to running yet she knew that Suko needed lots of exercising. Lindsay said: “Canicross made sense to me because it was an obvious way to give both owner and dog exercise.”
Canicross is a sport that joins humans and dogs together as one team. The dog, or dogs, is leashed to the owner with the dog at the front running ahead – and pulling along – the owner. Both owners and dogs benefit from canicross with improvements in cardiovascular fitness and strength.
When she then started looking around for canicross training sessions she could not find a local group, so she started her own. Lindsay, who now owns eight dogs for canicross, said: “I wanted to do more than just run with Suko and I wanted my training to be more structured so I could become faster and fi tter.
At Mugdock, the Cani-Fit training sessions take place every Wednesday from 7pm to 8pm. The sessions, which cost £6, are led by canicross coach Fiona Ramsay. You do not have to be super fit to join in, but you should be enthusiastic and keen to try. Cani-Fit was founded by Lindsay Johnson, of Ayrshire, who offers at least six weekly sessions, as well as regular workshops, across the west of Scotland.
“My classes are for anyone to try and the only requirement is that dogs are at least 11 months old. Many people become hooked on the sport and fi nd it is a fun and rewarding way for both owner and dog to get fi t.” Cani-Fit founder Lindsay Johnson running with one of her dogs

> Turn your phone off or set the ringer to silent before you start driving. This will reduce the need to look at your phone whilst behind the wheel. Even better – hide your phone in the glove box to keep it out of reach! > If it is necessary to use your mobile device for any reason, park in a safe area and make sure to turn your engine off before calling.

> Do not make any calls or text when you are stopped at traffic lights or when you are queuing in traffic as these are considered against the law. > Don’t call people if you know they are driving. > Even if you have a handsfree device, it is up to the discretion of the police if they think you’re distracted or not in control of your vehicle. Although it can be tempting to send a quick text to a family member whilst you are stopped in traffic, the implications for using your phone while driving are costly. The best way to ensure your safety and those on the road around you is to turn your phone off and put it away until you have reached your destination.

Open FOR “responsible campers” As the summer camping season begins and new byelaws come into effect, the National Park Authority is reminding visitors that all kinds of camping is still welcome in the Park.

The seasonal byelaws are new regulations which manage pressures and damage caused by camping and firelighting in less than four per cent of the Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Alongside this the Park Authority has provided over 300 camping and motorhome places in the byelaw zones bookable through a new easy to use website. Gordon Watson, Chief Executive of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, said: “Camping is one of the best ways to get out and enjoy the stunning surroundings we have in the National Park and there is every kind of camping experience on offer here. “The new byelaws do not change that. Whether you’re an experienced camper, coming on your own or with your friends and family, there is still a wide choice of places to camp in the National Park. To support
this we have opened a new campsite in the Trossachs at Loch Chon and are promoting some excellent locations to ‘wild camp’ with a permit. “Our focus just now is on making everyone coming to camp in the Park fully aware of how the byelaws work and of all the camping options available to them.” For those who love the solitude of ‘wild camping’, the vast majority of the Park’s 720 square miles will experience no change to camping at all. Until September, people keen to camp or stay overnight in a motorhome or campervan at one of the many popular and picturesque loch shore locations throughout the Park, can do so by buying a camping permit or booking a pitch at a campsite. Alongside a comprehensive guide to all of the commercial campsites in the National Park, permits are available online from the National Park authority at www.lochlomond-trossachs. org/camping.

Susan Manion is the new Chief Officer for East Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership. We spoke to her about her job. Susan, who joins HSCP after the retirement of Karen Murray, has significant experience in leading health and social care and has held various posts including the same position in the Scottish Borders. The region’s HSCP was legally set up as an organisation in 2015/16 with the responsibility of developing a strategy plan for both adult and child services. It is the first time that health and social care services have come together to be run by one organisation. Susan said: “The aim is for a more effi cient and effective co-ordination of the wider services, including Social Work, Criminal Justice and Community and Primary Care, in one over-seeing organisation.” In particular, there is a focus on care services of the elderly,

Show not to be missed Strathendrick Pipe Band, a Heavy Horses display, children’s events and a fancy dress tug o’ war are just some examples of the sort of entertainment on offer – along with plenty of food and drink stalls, a funfair, local bands, and very much more besides. The show was founded the year after the Battle of Waterloo, and after last year’s spectacular bicentenary event this superb local show is about to enter its third century.
With everything from riding events to judging of the cutest animals to be found in a paddock anywhere the fantastic show run by Strathendrick Agricultural Society is unique. All the fun of the farm is there, from vintage tractors to prized livestock, together with all the brilliant aspects of country life which go with the territory – we’re thinking particularly of that Great Drymen Bake-off contest. Entries to that popular contest will be judged at 2pm on the day, and of course that’s just one
QUALITY KITCHEN FACELIFTS
of the highlights of an actionpacked event which is mainly but not exclusively about the array of agricultural animal life on display – from show jumping to sheepshearing. This year’s event is on Saturday, May 27, from 9am till early evening, and will take place at the easy to find Drymen Show Field at Drymen Bridge.
More than just a gala occasion, it’s a serious annual competitive get-together for the farming community, who stand to gain prestigious awards after rigorous judging. But at the same time you don’t need to know anything about farming or country life at all to enjoy what promises to be a wonderful day out. Admission is £8 for adults, £5 for senior citizens and juniors 5 to 15, under-fives free; and a family pass for two adults and two children is £25.

GOOD
COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.
But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:
"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."
"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
