Auction fun with AnitA It’s not ‘Bargain Hunt’, but the Scottish star of that massively popular show will be the leading lady for the proceedings – and the event is in aid of a worthy cause. Dumbarton Rotary Club have arguably ‘won a watch’ by recruiting antiques expert Anita Manning and her team from Great Western Auctions for a special charity fundraising Valuation Day at the National Park Centre on Monday, April 3. If you have that half-forgotten family heirloom tucked away – the one you always meant to get valued some day – this is the ideal opportunity to fi nd out what it could really be worth, and possibly also consign it to auction.

Antiques expert Anita Manning, and her team from Great Western Auctions, will be hosting a charity fundraising Valuation Day at the National Park Centre

The entry fee is £10 and for that you can have up to three items valued – and enjoy a tea or coffee while you wait your turn.

A spokesman for Dumbarton Rotary said: “The Park Centre have helped us to accommodate this event by offering us a discounted cost to hire the venue, and Great Western Auctions are providing The aim of the event, which runs this service of valuation free of charge to us. All money raised will from 10am to 3pm, is to support the 500 Miles Charity, which helps go to the charity, and we hope to get interest from far and wide.“ children who have lost limbs to regain mobility and allow them It’s important to note that the to survive and have a future. event is not an auction, and

As in the show for which Anita Manning is most famous there are bound to be surprises and disappointments for those taking their prized possessions along (or it could be that hideous vase you’ve always wanted to get rid of – but which Even if your heirloom isn’t you’ve been told might be hugely valuable Anita and worth something). her team will have something interesting to tell you – and a Sometimes items like paintings or antique furniture will already great charity will benefi t too. “We have waited a long time for an opportunity to develop this site and bring much-needed affordable housing to Dumbarton.

One fi nal look at the tower of the old Ballantine's Distillery and a look to the future Cullross Ltd's vision of the site (inset)

It was the last landmark reminder of the old Ballantine’s Distillery, and now it is consigned to nostalgia – to make way for affordable homes. Cullross Limited and Dunbritton Housing Association are working jointly to deliver new homes on the site, with Dunbritton Housing Association creating the homes and Cullross delivering.

Dunbritton Housing Association have received Scottish Government approval to develop an additional 47 homes over and above the 108 homes which had previously been approved – meaning that over 150 affordable homes will be delivered by Dunbritton Housing Association over the course of the project.

The former distillery was built on the site of the McMillan Shipyard and it operated producing whisky until 2002. Dunbritton board chairman Sephton MacQuire said: “This The ramshackle remnants of the development on what is a prime old red brick tower, dominating site will go a long way toward Dumbarton town centre, was a meeting the need for high quality bleak reminder of a one-time houses for rent in Dumbarton. powerful local employer.

“Opportunities like this are few and far between and we look forward to delivering what will be a major improvement to the whole infrastructure of Dumbarton town centre.“ Cullross director Steven Garry said:“We are all excited to have reached this important stage of the development and we look forward to moving forward with the development and delivering new homes.

Arcari’s set for

Drymen

March already, and we still haven’t mentioned Drymen alt-blues musician Dave Arcari who – despite a hectic international schedule – has begun 2017 with concerts on the home front. He has already played Glasgow and Ayrshire, having returned from his fifth tour of the USA.

Now he is to play an exclusive show to be recorded (and filmed) in Drymen for a live album. The show is at Buchanan Memorial Hall, Milton of Buchanan, by Drymen, on Saturday, March 4. This is a convenient way of reminding us that while he has an eclectic overseas fan base on at least two continents, he always returns to his roots. “It’s short notice,” says Arcari, “but we’ve been encouraged by some test recordings from the last couple of shows and had to take the chance to record a show

at what is the perfect venue – it’s pretty much my hometown venue on the east side of Loch Lomond. “Folks have been asking for a live album for a long time and there’s a whole load of reasons why the time is right to do this now – not least the fact that I have some new, unreleased material that will be performed for the forthcoming release.” He has recently returned from his fifth USA tour – a five week, 20-plus gig trip taking him from the East Coast to the

mid-West and back to promote his latest EP, Hellbound Train. The USA tour followed a heavy UK and European summer tour schedule promoting the release which debuted at number seven in the iTunes charts. Official showcases at SxSW in Austin, Texas and recording sessions for tastemaker Daytrotter have helped boost Arcari’s US profile, while ongoing UK and European tour dates have helped establish him as one of the top solo artists on the circuit.

Hats off to Loch Lomond Rescue Boat supporter Andrea Ellis – and people like her – for making a worthwhile gesture to help a vital service. She donated the cash she normally spends on Christmas cards to the funds of a local institution which has literally saved lives, and which copes with all sorts of dramas, major and minor, on an almost daily basis. A glance at recent log entries discloses the usual pattern of people getting lost, stuck or fi nding themselves adrift, often in positions where it’s by no means obvious how they can be rescued in a hurry. Sometimes the call-outs are spurious or solved in other ways – as in the case where a man who was reportedly extremely drunk and said to be in charge of a boat at Luss.

Once upon a time the Scots had a reputation of thriftiness, but in this modern era of a consumer society, do you really know how much of your hard-earned money is wasted?

We hear all about the difficulty many have in making ends meet, but according to research carried out by Provident we’re actually binning nearly £200 a year on wasted food. Its analysis of Scots shopping habits concludes that the average weekly shop is about £63, and that we’re chucking away about six per cent of that – and over a year that works out at £196. Some of its other fi ndings are interesting, too, for example that more than one in ten

Countryfi le Magazine editor Fergus Collins says: “The awards provide a wonderful opportunity to pay tribute to the best of the British countryside. “Our experts have nominated a range of exceptional contenders and I look forward to hearing our readers’ views and discovering which nominees prove the popular favourites.“ The ultimate prize for gaining the top title is, of course, more visitors – and more tourism growth in an area which has plenty of capacity for further sustainable development. Lessons on insurAnce present an unnecessary risk to other road users.“ Neil Drane, Head of Enforcement Services, at MIB said: “There are thousands of uninsured vehicles in Scotland, with offi cers from across Scotland seizing in excess of 8,000 vehicles during 2016 through their partnership approach with MIB. Police Scotland and the Motor Insurance Bureau have warned that points, fi nes and vehicle seizures will be issued to anyone caught driving without insurance

What’s the penalty for failing to have your vehicle properly insured – a slap on the wrists, perhaps, or a modest fine and a casual “don’t do it again“? Some local drivers have recently found the consequences can be signifi cantly more serious, after a blitz on the area carried out by police and the Motor Insurance Bureau. It was well advertised in advance, so it wasn’t as if motorists were being dealt a sneaky blow when, with a bit of warning, they could have brought insurance up to scratch. Drivers found to be breaking the law face points, fi nes, and even

having their vehicle seized – and potentially crushed. Chief Superintendent Andy Edmonston, Head of Road Policing for Police Scotland, said: “We are committed to achieving the Scottish Government’s 2020 casualty reduction targets. “The MIB states that more than 26,000 people are injured every year by uninsured drivers, and so Police Scotland will continue to target uninsured drivers, as they

“This is a considerable increase on the number of vehicles seized in 2015 and shows our determination to stop those drivers using uninsured vehicles and remove their vehicles from the roads. The MIB will provide close support to the operation, in terms of increased staffi ng at their Police Helpline facility and by attending several roadside checks.“

Audrey Mutongi (far right), with her team of volunteers, plans to expand their popular befriending service, with a grant from the Social Enterprise Challenge Fund

A befriending service for the elderly launched by an Alexandria woman is one of several local social enterprises to benefit from a recent grants boost. Audrey Mutongi’s venture is already in great demand, and this has allowed her to expand the service and create volunteering opportunities – which will happen all the more quickly, thanks to a £12,000 increment.

together to support our growing team of dedicated volunteers.

It has allowed her to create a full time co-ordinator post so she can expand the service she offers to the community.

The Social Enterprise Challenge Fund was launched by the Council in 2012 to help create local businesses that address social or environmental needs, and offer new employment opportunities.

Audrey said: “The funding has helped us get a team of passionate volunteer coordinators

“It has been such a positive move that has helped us to support more people in West Dunbartonshire who fi nd themselves lonely or isolated.“

Successful applicants receive investment of up to £15,000 and the latest recipients of funding represent a diverse range of innovative, community-focused ideas. Meanwhile Alan McGlashan from Renton plans to start up a social enterprise supporting and rehabilitating ex-offenders by providing them with training in the construction services and enabling them to move into employment or self-employment. The enterprise will provide paid employment and training to local individuals while providing a service to the social and private housing sector in property maintenance. Alan has been awarded £10,000 towards the start-up and running costs of his business. Others to benefi t include Jain McIntyre from Bowling , who – with a £15,000 grant – will launch a community interest company which will help market Bowling Harbour as a destination point for visitors while also offering creative and educational workshops and events for local communities.

Youngsters pitching in

What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: SEARCH AND DESTROY...

An all weather sports pitch at the new Bellsmyre Education Campus has been opened to the community. The nine-a-side pitch will be available for supervised use by young people up to the age of 16 until the start of the school term in August when it is expected a new fence, designed to reduce any noise from the facility, will be in place. The pitches will be available for use by school age groups from 9am to 9pm Monday to Friday; 9am to 5pm on Saturdays and 10am to 5pm on Sunday. Planning convener Councillor Lawrence O’Neill, said: “I am pleased we’ve found a solution which will allow community groups including local amateur

s

teams to use the facilities from now over the summer. “We want to encourage participation in sport and are keen to make the best use of facilities including pitches. “It’s also important to ensure that residents aren’t disturbed by potential noise from our facilities and work will start soon to build the fence around the pitch at Bellsmyre which will help provide sound proofing for neighbouring residents .“ The pitch was built as part of the new Bellsmyre campus which opened in August last year.

Researchers are continually finding new ways to fight cancer. Recent advances in so-called immunotherapy are being used in some cases of advanced bowel cancer. Manufactured antibodies (which we normally use to fight infections) “search and destroy” cancer cells by recognising abnormal proteins on their coat and killing them. This method is being used along with standard chemotherapy. Of course, the main treatment for bowel cancer is to remove the affected part of gut by an operation.

Glasgow Citizen's Theatre's production of 'Divided City' looks at the West of Scotland's sporting rivalry, and has received some very positive reviews

Sporting rivalry is fine, but how do we persuade the next generation that tribal animosity – a running sore in West of Scotland society to this day – belongs to the Dark Ages? This is the last month of a touring production of ‘Divided City’ by Glasgow’s Citizen’s Theatre in West Dunbartonshire, and – if Facebook entries are anything to go by – it has succeeded in captivating young participants in a way no amount of mere preaching could do.

is aware of it brings youngsters fully into the drama, asking them to analyse for themselves the roots of division... and how to bring it to an end.

One parent wrote: “I can honestly say I have never seen such an amazing performance by school kids ever – everything from start Dealing with the sort of dilemmas to fi nish was so powerful, and everyone in the west of Scotland sent out the right message.“

Of course the theme which underpins the whole production is the notorious sectarian rivalry of the ‘Old Firm’, but the essential message covers all forms of intolerance and leaves the audience wondering... could the upcoming generation be the fi rst generation of Scots for which the old divisions have no meaning at all? The West Dunbartonshire project involved primary schools in a musical adaptation of the production, and put the whole issue of a divided society centre stage in a way which children could easily relate to. Besides giving a profi le to a serious subject ‘Divided City’ introduces children to the idea that drama is exciting and dynamic, which is arguably a good thing in itself – much more fun than just watching TV.

A one-day election job Poll staff for the forthcoming council elections in May are currently being considered, with £160 (gross) payable for poll clerks. The hours of the poll will be 7am to 10pm and staff must report to the polling place at least 30 minutes before the start of the poll. Obviously you can’t be a poll worker if you’re involved in a political campaign for any party or candidate involved. Fees include a payment of £30 for a training session which will be held seven to 10 days before the elections.

In Scots law the basis for division of assets upon divorce is fair sharing. Fair sharing is regarded as equal, with consideration of certain principles and special circumstances. As a family lawyer, I often have clients who are entirely financially reliant on their spouse and have no real sense of what matrimonial assets are held in their partner's name or even what is jointly owned. Reaching a financial agreement requires a full and frank disclosure of ALL matrimonial assets and liabilities by both parties. The starting point is for both parties to declare all property they are aware of in their sole and joint names. However, this does not always happen and one party may attempt to "hide" assets.

In the event you believe your spouse has not declared all assets fully then there are certain tools provided by the Administration of Justice (Scotland) Act 1972 whereby the court can grant an order requiring assets to be disclosed. This is known as a Specification of Documents and can be served on anyone reasonably suspected of holding, or having, the assets. Upon service of the court order, the haver must provide the requested information. The haver may be a bank, accountant, individual etc. It is therefore not easy, and certainly not advisable, to hide matrimonial property.

ForgetMe Not GRAVESIDE MAINTENANCE

Headstone Cleaning

There’s a bit to go yet before the highlight of Drymen’s year – the famous Agricultural Show is on May 27 – but now’s the time to start practising for the big event. We’re not talking about showjumping or even sheep-shearing but baking, because yet again the local SWI ladies are judging what promises to be one of the most hotly-contended events of the show, and everyone who fancies they know a thing or two about oven-craft is welcome to try their skill. The organisers tell us; “This year we'd love you to enter a Single Chocolate Sponge (unfi lled) Iced With Chocolate Glace Icing” – although whether this is just a particular judges’ favourite they’re looking forward to sampling in detail isn’t spelled out. To enter, all you have to do is be a non SWRI member of any age, bring it to the SWRI tent

before 9.30am or between 1pm and 1.30pm and clearly label your entry (which is free) with your name, address and contact number. Entries will be openly judged by the SWRI ladies at 2pm on the day. The organisers have asked anyone aiming to take part to let them know, simply so that they can make enough room for all – there was a superb entry last year, and they want to ensure they can accommodate everyone.

Of course there’s much more to the show than “just” the baking event, as it’s one of the premier agricultural shows in the country (comparable, say, to the famous annual show in Neilston, East Renfrewshire), and we’ll have more on what’s likely to feature in the next issue. Meantime if you want to catch a fl avour of last year’s action there’s plenty on the show’s Facebook (search Drymen Show) including pictures from the bakeoff, in which the entries were edible model tractors!

Chivas Brothers have brought some good news to the area as they are moving their Paisley headquarters to their Dumbarton site

So consolidation of the company and the brand in Dumbarton is about more than just a welcome increment of jobs, as it effectively makes the burgh home to a blue chip brand that will allow business development chiefs to wax lyrical about “the home of world-renowned Scotch whisky Chivas Regal”.

The old “whisky tower” won’t be part of Dumbarton’s future, but that doesn’t mean the town is losing its strong connection with Scotland’s national drink. Possibly the best news the area has had for some time was the confi rmation that all 450 staff at the soon to close Paisley headquarters of Chivas Brothers will be moving to the fi rm’s Dumbarton site – bringing with them a useful boost to the local economy.

part of a web of whisky interests across Scotland which includes some of the most prestigious names in the business, and also produces – with much less fanfare – major export brands we don’t see on supermarket shelves here, such as Clan Campbell (which is particularly popular in France).

The move will be completed by the end of 2019, creating a reinforced local base which will by then play host to more than 1,000 workers, making it easily in the top rank of Scotch Whisky sites in the country, especially as the Kilmalid site is to be expanded considerably with a £40million building and a new bottling plant. So just as one icon of the town’s whisky past disappears we’re being given the consolation of a major increment of strength from the owners of a superlative brand – a prize many other towns would eagerly welcome.

New ideas for the mag? Household Tips CHOPPING #1 ONIONS So many people tell us that they keep their Community Advertiser all month because it is chock full of local information from What’s On to useful ads for local trades and services.

IDEA

We’re asking our readers if there’s anything more you’d find handy. With our bumper 36-page editions we have room for regular slots which could enhance the mag as a month long information source. We already carry essential numbers for local services and contacts for most if not all support groups. What else?

Would it be useful to publish the tide tables for sailors, sunset and sunrise times, church services or bus times?

Or how about healthy living tips or a selection of the best of What’s On from our sister magazines in Bearsden & Milngavie and Helensburgh & Lomond? We say: “It’s a community magazine and we want what you want. So if you’ve got any thoughts we’d love to hear from you.” Also as we mentioned last month we’re always on the lookout for stories. So whether it is new ideas for the mag, events, information about your club or organisation or a story about a local person going over and above, please get in touch.
