These teams of volunteers are able to deploy immediately, at all times of day and the year, in all weathers to get to people in often life threatening situations so the service they provide is absolutely vital.

The three Mountain Rescue Teams were chosen for 2016/17 with staff running a series of events and activities throughout the year including running a marathon, quiz, Great Scottish Swim, cake bakes, tea and toast mornings and a very popular tuck shop. It’s said that most garages are filled with junk and broken garden chairs, but there’s at least one where the Clyde shipbuilding tradition is alive and well - or at least a scaled down version. (writes Nick Cowie) Derek Spall’s car stays in the drive of his Helensburgh home, because inside the garage, there’s a workshop where he constructs astonishingly detailed model ships and yachts. A four foot long, intricately accurate model of HMS Solebay,

a 1945 Battle Class Destroyer stands on the workbench as Derek begins work on his latest project. He tells me: “It really started as just something to do when I retired. You don’t want to go from working seven days a week to just crashing off a cliff.

I have an art school background and I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands so it seemed like a good hobby.” The models involve astonishing patience and skill . Some are built completely from scratch, others from elaborate kits. On display in his garage are a Bristol pilot cutter, “ Emma C Berry “ an American fi shing sloop and “The Yorkshireman,” a deep sea salvage tug which saw action in the Falklands. And they are big, three to four feet long and perfect replicas of the originals.

Derek said: “Each one takes between nine and 18 months to build. I aim to do one a year. All the models are powered by remote controlled electric engines and can be sailed.” But one of the things that really bugs Derek and other local model makers is the lack of anywhere in the area to sail them. The skating pond is too shallow and gets clogged with reeds, the reservoir is used by anglers and anyway is really not safe for model boat sailing. Having seen them close up in “dry dock” it really is a shame local people can’t see the models in action. Derek agrees: “ It’s a disgrace really. I have to go to the Richmond Park Model Boat Club in Shawlands. If the skating pond was deeper it would be perfect and it would be quite something for local people to see.” In between ships Derek also fi nds time for golf and curling, so it would seem that far from crashing off a cliff, retirement for the former operations director is pretty full.

There’s a range of strength and balance classes for over 65s held in the Victoria Halls and other venues in Helensburgh and Lomond. Organiser Charlotte Wilson says: “ As people get older it is important to be as active as you can. Regular physical activity will help maintain strength, fl exibility and energy levels, so that people can carry on doing the things they enjoy and stay independent. Exercises that improve muscle strength in legs, arms, back, shoulders and chest are particularly important. They can make it easier to get out of a chair, improve posture, coordination and balance. They are also an effective way to reduce the risk of falls.” The classes have been developed in partnership between NHS

Highland, Argyll & Bute Council and Argyll & Bute TSI, and are overseen by trained exercise professionals and physiotherapists. In addition to the clinical benefi t that the classes are known to provide, the community based approach is designed to provide a social network and peer support. The National Rhododendron Society say: “Rhododendrons generate great passion and enthusiasm in those who seek to find new species, identify and conserve existing ones or simply grow and propagate them. Every garden, even the smallest, can house a few rhododendrons

and SRS can introduce you to the delight of growing this beautiful group of plants in the company of other like minded gardeners .” Help and advice on how to prepare your entries can be sought on the Friday afternoon when the setup is underway, and further information can be found on the Society's website. The show will be open to the public from 12 noon on Saturday 6th May, when you can come along and see the exhibits, and buy plants - or simply come along for soup, sandwiches and home baking.

Not-so Secret Squirrels The Scottish Wildlife Trust is appealing to local residents to keep their eyes peeled for sightings of red and grey squirrels. Mary-Anne Collis the Project Officer in the Argyll, Trossachs and Stirlingshire area for the Saving Scotland's Red Squirrel project says:” We rely heavily on the public helping us with sightings of any red or grey squirrels that they may have seen. We particularly need people to register any sightings they have of squirrels in the Helensburgh, Dumbarton and Rosneath areas but are interested in any sightings in the area. Any help you can give me in doing this would be greatly appreciated. “ Details https:// scottishsquirrels.org.uk/

60 fRAGRANT YEARS Of flOwER clUB Late News

DIAMOND LUNCH: The Helensburgh Flower Club will celebrate 60 years with a special lunch this month

Helensburgh Flower Club is celebrating its diamond anniversary with a series of events. This month it culminates with the Diamond Celebratory Lunch in the Abbotsford Hotel. Mrs Lilias Hoskins a National Demonstrator from Edinburgh will be entertaining members with her demonstration entitled ‘Let's Celebrate’, continuing a tradition started on March 28 1957. The Club was founded by a group of likeminded ladies led by Mrs Constance Roberts. The fi rst meeting was held in a room above the old Gas Board Showrooms in Princes Street and was one of the fi rst Flower Clubs

in Scotland as well as one of the fi rst clubs to become affi liated to the Scottish Association of Flower Arranging Societies.

fi rst of which was in 1961 at the Commodore Hotel with tickets costing 15/- (75p) Marilyn said: “Over the years the club has had 18 Chairmen, 21 Secretaries and 14 Treasurers. The Club has been involved in many local and national fl ower arranging events, decorating various venues including St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, Glasgow Cathedral and Westminster Abbey. “Amongst the competitions that have been entered is Gardening Scotland, many times bringing home both Gold awards and best in Show. A number of club members competed at the World Show in Glasgow in 2002 with the club's Honorary President, Mrs Sandra Munro as always on the award list.”

The club’s history is a fascinating portrait of how society has changed. Marilyn Bevan the current chairman tells us that in the early days formal lunches would have a strict dress code of hats and gloves.

The club meets on the second Tuesday of the month from September to June and the programme includes workshops, in house entertainment and demonstrations from both Scottish and other areas of the National Association.

In fact the club was the fi rst in Scotland to host celebration lunch and dinner events, the

Don’t waste YOUR vote

The Scottish local council elections are being held this month and no matter who you support, the important thing is to use your vote.

Co-op cash saves Cafe The Cove and Kilcreggan Youth Café has escaped another financial crisis thanks to a donation of £2599.46 from the Co-op.

Voting gives you the power to decide how the council is run. If you have a complaint about the way it is being run, voting is a way simple you can make a change.

high then politicians may be more likely to make policy that benefits that demographic in order to please them and subsequently win their votes from other parties or retain their support.

You can choose a candidate to suit to your views and they can represent your views at a local level. It’s not the only way to participate but it’s the quickest and easiest way.

Did you know? According to IPSOS Mori more than twice as many over 65s voted in the last council elections compared to 1824 year olds.

So vote. It gives you the right to moan. It might sound flippant, but what gives you the ability to criticise the "powers that be" with any authority if you didn't do your bit to help choose them.

Chairman Susie Will said: “We were in our last month of being able to stay viable.

NOW IS THE TIME TO INVEST SAVE THE BEES

SOCIALISING

EDUCATION

Bees are vital to our economy and to the environment because they are such excellent pollinators. Many farmers depend on bees to ensure good crops, however our bee population is at risk. Planting a garden is an excellent way to ensure that the bees and other beneficial pollinating insects survive in your area. Although many common garden vegetables have flowers that attract bees, planting flowers and herbs in your garden will make them even happier.

It seems that few people know their neighbours anymore, but when you spend time outside in your garden you may find yourself chatting with the neighbour over the garden fence. And once you realise you have planted more green beans or tomatoes than you could ever use, you’ll be surprised how delighted people are when they see you come their way! Growing food also brings families together in the garden and at the table by encouraging more home-cooked meals.

If you have kids, there is no better way to introduce them to healthy habits than to involve them in growing a garden. Children are much more likely to want to eat vegetables they have grown themselves. Most kids are excited to watch tiny seeds sprout and grow and home grown fruit and vegetables are more nutrient-dense than conventional produce, with greater taste and crisp intense flavours. It’s a great antidote to sedentary, indoor lifestyles benefitting the body and fulfilling the spirit.

Home & Garden Feature – MAY 2017

IN YOUR HOME AND GARDEN BE EFFICIENT

FRESHEN UP

EXTENSIONS

Is it time to upgrade your appliances, windows and other energy impacting parts of your house? Upgrading your home with energy efficient features will not only save you money each month on your utility bill. For example, a washing machine with an AA+ efficiency rating can use up to 70% less energy, and therefore costs 70% less to run, than a G rated machine. It may also make the home more attractive to younger & more energy conscious buyers.

There are many reasons to consider updating your home and getting creative with remodeling can be an exciting venture. It is an opportunity to express your individuality and style. Sometimes changing the colours of your home interior or remodelling old rooms, can have the effect of changing your outlook on your home and living environment. The money that you decide to spend will be a long term investment in the comfort and enjoyment of your house.

Home extension is a great way to create new space. With the cost of moving home getting ever costlier, recent years have seen an increase in the number of cramped householders choosing instead to stay put and free up some space by extending their property or converting their loft. By building a conservatory or extension to an existing property, or by converting the loft, householders can bypass the time, effort and numerous fees associated with moving.

WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR HOME

• TREE REMOVAL & TREE PRUNING • • HEDGE & SHRUB TRIMMING • • SITE CLEARANCE & STUMP GRINDING • • TREE PLANTING & FIREWOOD •

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: CLAIMING MIS-SOLD PPI Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) policies were sold to around 45 million consumers between 1990 and 2010. The intention was to provide cover for people who lost their job or became too ill to work and were unable to maintain loan, credit or store card repayments. It has now been recognised that the policy was mis-sold to many of these customers as they did not need it nor were they ever likely to be eligible to even claim it. As a result, customers have the right to reclaim the policy payments made and the banks have set aside ÂŁ45bn to meet the costs of potential payouts. However, billions remain

unclaimed and the Financial Conduct Authority have now set a deadline by which time all claims must be submitted, being 29th August 2019. It is free to make a claim and many online forums can assist with doing it yourself. You can start by checking old loan or mortgage statements. It is important to be aware that claims can be made even after the victim has deceased as any money owed will form part of the estate. In the event there is any likelihood you have been mis-sold PPI then it is essential you do not miss the deadline as any claim submitted after that day will not be considered.

Powerful PLAY at Cove Cove Burgh Hall has booked two top shows this month. Singersongwriter Horse McDonald is there May 6 with her awardwinning one-woman play, Careful. The National Theatre of Scotland follows on May 15, staging The 306: Day which charts the heartbreaking journey of the 306 men executed for cowardice and desertion during the conflict and the devastating consequences for those they left behind. Horse McDonald first performed her show at the Edinburgh Fringe last year, this is the poignant and compelling story of Horse’s triumph over adversity through music. Collaboratively written with writer and comedian Lynn Ferguson, it is directed by Maggie Kinloch and produced by The Gilded Balloon After the performance in Cove on Saturday May 6, Horse will be joined on stage by director

Maggie Kinloch for an intimate, ‘audience with’ Q&A session. For her music fans, she will also weave into the second half of the evening a small selection of her favourite songs from her illustrious career. The 306: Day is the second part of Oliver Emmanuel and Gareth Williams' powerful new First World War trilogy. This second part explores how the war affected women, families, and communities on the home front. Open FOR “responsible campers” National Park. To support this we have opened a new campsite in the Trossachs at Loch Chon and are promoting some excellent locations to ‘wild camp’ with a permit. “Our focus just now is on making everyone coming to camp in the Park fully aware of how the byelaws work and of all the camping options available to them.”

As the summer camping season begins and new byelaws come into effect, the National Park Authority is reminding visitors that all kinds of camping is still welcome in the Park. The seasonal byelaws are new regulations which manage pressures and damage caused by camping and firelighting in less than four per cent of the Lomond and Trossachs National Park. Alongside this the Park Authority has provided over 300 camping and motorhome places in the byelaw zones bookable through a new easy to use website. Whether you’re an experienced camper, coming on your own or with your friends and family, there is still a wide choice of places to camp in the

For those who love the solitude of ‘wild camping’, the vast majority of the Park’s 720 square miles will experience no change to camping at all. Until September, people keen to camp or stay overnight in a motorhome or campervan at one of the many popular and picturesque loch shore locations throughout the Park, can do so by buying a camping permit or booking a pitch at a campsite. Alongside a comprehensive guide to all of the commercial campsites in the National Park, permits are available online from the National Park authority at www.lochlomond-trossachs.org/ camping.

This May 4th, elect:

Iain Paterson Your SNP Candidate for Lomond North

I was born in Succoth Farm Arrochar, which my father ran with his brother and my grandfather. We moved away to where my father’s work, as a shepherd, took him to various farms around Scotland, before returning again. I left Arrochar, to travel as a welder for various jobs in the oil industry, now my wife and I both work with people with learning difficulties/ mental health issues, providing day outdoor activity opportunities. Arrochar & Tarbet has a great sense of community, where people help and look out for each other, this sense of community gave me the grounding and desire, to want to serve the community, and where we choose to raise our family. It’s a place I am pleased to call home. I am also a member of the Arrochar mountain rescue team, whose members come from all walks of life, and who willingly give up their free time to help those in need. An organisation I am proud and privileged to be a member of. L I S T E N

Paterson, Iain Shonny Scottish National Party (SNP) Our commitment is to make Argyll and Bute your Council, a better Council by ensuring that… Make sure our communities have a REAL say about the things that matter to them – including the allocation of local resources Work with the Scottish Government to transform early learning and childcare provision and priorities much needed improvement in our valued education service, whose leadership was recently graded as WEAK Invest in our roads, transportation and town centre, and promote Argyll and Bute as a good place to live and do business Work to reverse the decline in our population, and work with partners to build new affordable homes to create new jobs Focus on providing good services, and promoting a culture of openness and transparency

Listen to people. What are priorities? Impact on lives? What affects communities, and why? Source solutions. I want to work to create positive answers. Topical importance, our young people, housing, small businesses. Engage all to be involved in their communities. Nurture ideas to develop, I will work with communities looking to their future needs.

TO P People who are isolated vulnerable, or have mental health needs. E Education seeking the best future for early years and childcare /education. O Opportunities to make time for elderly voices to be heard. P Pride in the area of Lomond North and its people. L Learning from community councils. E Enviromental needs, fly tipping, potholes, and local roads. It would be an honour to serve as the peoples choice of SNP councillor for Lomond North, to help deal with the issues that affect and play a part in shaping the future of the local communities. I believe everyone, be they young, elderly, lonely, or vulnerable, should have the same opportunity to express what is important to them, and for these issues to be addressed.

we're in

GOOD

COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.

But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:

"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."

"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
