ately it feels like a struggle to bring to mind the things we should celebrate about South Africa. With everything going on – power outages, cell phone provider strikes and road tolls aside – it is easy to stop seeing the good around us and complaining becomes a knee jerk reaction. I’ve come to realise though, that as much as we South Africans like to complain, we are more resilient than we think we are. Take a drive down any major road between Pretoria and Johannesburg and you will see that development, construction and improvements are happening everywhere. That is just our way. Brand new malls and office buildings are going up in spite of power cuts or whichever additional obstacles stand in their way. We learn to cope with the torrent of challenges that come at us and simply surge up and around them, and carry on doing the best we can. Maybe we don’t give ourselves enough credit for this and perhaps we would all cope better if we did. Another way of coping is by finding escape in appreciating the beauty around us. Not just in the landscape and patented African scenery that has become synonymous with Avion but in what mankind is capable of creating – oftentimes against great odds. That is why we are focusing on design for this issue. From stunning architecture to innovation in design, we sought to feature one-of-a-kind companies creating unique and highly covetable products. We scoured the globe to bring you amazing pieces and stories that showcase the many aspects of design. It finds its way into timepieces, cars and pure invention and our hope is that by looking at international designs, you will be able to compare them to what is being produced locally and would find South Africa not only on par, but better in many ways. From exceptional wines and gourmet cuisines to fashion week worthy clothing and gorgeous structural architecture – if you take some time to look around, you will be amazed – and proud – of what South Africa is capable of.

OPERATION LOCK AND THE WAR ON RHINO POACHING By John Hanks When the existence of the secret Operation Lock project was finally leaked, WWF denied any involvement, and John Hanks took the fall. Staffed by former SAS operatives, Operation Lock set up headquarters in Johannesburg and extended its reach into neighbouring states. Its operatives planned to train game rangers, to pose as rhino horn traders in order to entrap buyers and to expose the kingpins who were driving the trade. It was a controversial approach, all the more because it was working within apartheid South Africa in the late 1980s. In this book John Hanks finally tells the story of these explosive events. As a leading international authority on conservation, he also deals with the present scourge of rhino poaching and gives controversial criticism of some of the current policies to curb poaching.

THE BATTLE OF SAVATE By Piet Nortje On 21 May 1980, under the codename Operation TiroTiro, 32 Battalion attacked and routed a FAPLA brigade at Savate, a small town 75 kilometres inside Angola. Fifteen members of 32 Battalion were killed in the action and many more wounded. To this day a remembrance service and parade is held annually to commemorate the battle and to remember 32 Battalion’s victory and the price they paid. Drawing from official documents in the Department of Defence Documentation Centre that have only recently been declassified and from testimonies of soldiers on both sides, The Battle of Savate is the definitive account of one of the greatest battles of the Border War, describing in detail the operation, its motivation and planning, its achievements and failures, and vividly recreating the experience of what happened on the ground.

The abundant animal life in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy is quite simply jaw-dropping, and you won’t need to go far to see some unforgettable sights. All the drama that only nature can provide will be right on your doorstop and in the hands of their experienced field guides you are guaranteed a front row seat. A number of lion pride territories meet in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy which can make for some interesting encounters as the different groups battle for dominance. The area is also home to roughly 150 000 Loita wildebeest that don’t make the annual migration south and seem content

to ‘loiter’ all year round. Of course one of the biggest draws to the area is the annual ‘Great Migration’, which sees up to one million wildebeest plus hundreds of thousands of zebra, gazelles and other game undertake a journey of roughly 1 600km through Tanzania and Kenya. The thrill of going on a game drive is difficult to top, but guests can also spend time soaking up the views – keeping your binoculars handy as you never know what you’ll spot! You can also relax in the Main Tent that features an open but cosy lounge area with fireplace, a library of books, iPads, iPod docking stations and speaker systems, a games console and a TV/DVD. There is also a 12 metre outdoor infinity pool, big enough for a leisurely swim or a refreshing dip. If you’re looking for more action after your game drives, there is still lots to keep you busy in the vicinity of the lodge. Organised community trips are an exciting way to learn more about the local Maasai Tribe whose traditional

pastoralist customs are still very much in practice. Guests can also try a thrilling night game drive. Game drives in the evening open up a whole new world with the chance to see predominantly nocturnal game including aardvarks and honey badgers. hile many hotels worldwide pay mere lip service to environmentally conscious trends, genuinely ‘going green’ is an ambitious, often costly undertaking – one where developers must put not only their money, but also their thinking where their mouths are. Mario and Annemarie Delicio, owners of the innovative 145-room Hotel Verde, located a mere 400 metres from the Cape Town International Airport terminal buildings, have done just that. From construction methods and materials to operational technology and processes, to suppliers and products, their multiple award winning hotel goes all out to live up to its ambitious slogan as ‘Africa’s greenest’. Hotel Verde is geared not only towards an ethical and environmentally-friendly synergy, but also towards a truly comfortable and memorable experience. And it’s all achieved with both panache and sincerity. Everything that could be done to keep the hotel carbon neutral has been considered. A green vegetative roof regulates the temperature of the reception area. LED bulbs are used throughout the facility, while occupancy sensors ensure no air conditioning is used unnecessarily in rooms or public areas. All hotel appliances (such as washing machines, driers, dish washers, office equipment etc) are
energy-savers. Shower water is sterilised and filtered by a state of the art grey water plant and used to flush toilets, while a 40 000-litre tank collects rainwater and subsoil drainage water for irrigation. Three wind turbines and photovoltaic panels are used to generate electricity and elevators are fitted with special regenerative drives that harness 30% of input energy, which is then fed back into the grid. Cobiax void formers, plastic spheres made from 100% recycled polyethylene, were utilised wherever possible in the building design, saving almost 1300 tonnes of concrete, another major environmental plus point. Another intriguing innovation is Hotel Verde’s ground source geothermal field, an intricate system comprised of a hundred boreholes drilled underneath the hotel basement floor, into which high density polyethylene pipes, more than 13 km in length, are inserted and through which water is circulated. The pipes are connected to a number of ground-source heat pumps, acting as a heat sink in summer and a source of heat in winter. The hotel also encourages all its local suppliers to support initiatives by minimising unnecessary packaging. Recycling takes place wherever possible, with zero waste to landfill being the eventual goal. Wherever one goes, you are subtly encouraged to ‘do your bit’. ethos and staff’s genuine enthusiasm for it are infectious, especially because it’s all achieved so stylishly. Staff members are warm, welcoming and consummately professional. The hotel encourages visitors towards more eco-friendly habits through a novel incentives system. Recycle waste, reuse towels, refrain from using the aircon, or utilise power-generating gym equipment and you’ll be awarded ‘Verdino’ coins – to be redeemed at the 24 hour deli or hotel bar. Every Wednesday evening, the hotel observes earth hour, serving dinner by candlelight and switching off electric lights. Not only do double glazed windows keep rooms soundproof (there is not a hint of aircraft noise throughout the hotel), but spectrally selective glass also filters out the sun’s hot rays, significantly reducing the hotel’s reliance on conventional air conditioning. Toiletries and detergents are 100% bio-friendly. The hotel kitchen, which produces high quality meals starting with a red-eye commuter’s dream – a superior breakfast buffet served from 4.30 am onwards – grows its own herbs and vegetables, buying in all other supplies from as close to

source as possible. A cool, lush ‘living wall’ cum vertical garden separates the hotel lounge from the bar and dining area, purifying the air and creating a sense of serenity. Corridors on all four hotel floors are decorated with art inspired by themes from nature and created by local school children, crafters and artists. Outside, beyond a relaxing dining patio, a scenic reclaimed wetlands and water-wise endemic fynbos garden is found. Here guests can enjoy some fresh air and a wander along a 320 metre walking trail. In addition, there is an outdoor gym and a chemical free, natural eco-swimming pool with a sun deck to enjoy on warmer days. In recognition of its accomplishments, Hotel Verde was recently awarded a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) platinum certificate for new construction. LEED is the United States Green Building Council’s programme and utilises a stringent set of tools and guidelines to assess green buildings, recognising best-in-class practices. Platinum is the highest level awarded. “We achieved 96 points out of 110 on their rating system due to

our use of some of the most advanced, environmentally-conscious construction methods and operational practices in the world,” explains hotel sustainability consultant, Andre Harms of Ecolution Consulting. “As a result we’re the only hotel in Africa to have qualified for platinum status, and only one of six in the entire world.” Perhaps the hotel’s greatest achievement is that there is no sacrifice of either comfort or style at this sophisticated four-star establishment. It boasts spacious, contemporary designed

rooms and suites, perfect for both leisure and executive travellers. It is extremely family friendly yet simultaneously geared towards business travel. CHALKLEY TREEHOUSE
Chalkley Treehouse in Lion Sands Game Reserve – spanning Sabi Sand Game Reserve and Kruger National Park – was built in its chosen location as an ode to Guy Aubrey Chalkley who once set up camp in a majestic centuries-old Leadwood Tree to escape the predators roaming the plains below. This lavish 40m2 platform hosts just two guests sleeping under the stars. It boasts most 5-star comforts – and the ones left out make complete sense. While there is cell phone reception, wifi is not available and there is no electricity servicing the treehouse, affording an experience as wild as the animals that roam beneath it. At sunset, guests are driven the 4.5km distance from the nearest lodge where drinks and a scrumptious picnic dinner await. Dinner is a romantic, tapas style meal which would of course call for some red wine to be enjoyed while looking out over the open plain below. Once the sun has set, the treehouse is lit up by a romantic array of lanterns around the platform and up into the branches of the Leadwood Tree. A canopied bed allows the night breeze to wash over you on those hot nights and ensures that the sunrise will be the first thing you see when you open your eyes.

KINGSTON TREEHOUSE
Kingston Treehouse, also located in the Lion Sands Game Reserve is more of a family affair, sleeping four guests on a 60m2 platform. Children are permitted at the treehouse but again no wifi or electricity is at hand, but let’s be honest – why would you need either when spending the night gazing out over treetops that give way to a sky so filled with stars that it doesn’t look quite real. After making the short trip of 1.6km from the nearest lodge, guests make their way through rows of magnificent white boulders and across a small drawbridge, to find Africa unfolding in front of them. Kingston Treehouse is constructed entirely from wood and glass, with contemporary décor in understated hues of greys, white, black and purple. The beds are made up with plush linens and pillows that beg you to recline in luxurious splendour as you take in the sights and sounds emerging as the sun goes down. The treehouse provides more than enough warmth and shelter and so whatever weather comes your way, you will have a safe and luxurious setting with a unique window to enjoy the everchanging views. Kingston is equipped with full bathroom and shower facilities, and Africology products to complete your sensory experience. Guests do have access to radio communication and the drawbridge that gets pulled up against the single doorway provides ample security.

LONDOLOZI TREE CAMP
Londolozi’s Tree Camp is an entire lodge set among the trees. Here you will not only spend the night but your entire stay in a treehouse setting. Londolozi Tree Camp was the first ever Game Reserve to receive the world renowned Relais & Châteaux fleur-de-lis of excellence in 1993. Tree Camp was refurbished in March 2015, and the camp’s new look rekindles their original style of leopards, lanterns and ancient lead woods. These 300 year old Leadwood sentinels stand to attention as you arrive at the camp where an original Simon Max Bannister Leopard art work welcomes you. Shan Varty along with Yvonne O’ Brien from The Private House Company, were called in to weave their magic of understated style, simplicity and elegance to breathe new life into the six wellappointed suites. TINYALETI TREEHOUSE
Tinyeleti Treehouse can best be described as dinner and a show. It boasts one of the best game viewing spots in Lion Sands Game Reserve as its view looks out over the Sabie River. Tinyeleti, which aptly translates to ‘many stars’, is an overnight wilderness watching experience that has no match. As the sun dips below the horizon an array of animals start arriving at the river to quench their thirst giving guests an amazing spectacle to enjoy as they sip cocktails and tuck into a tapas-style feast. Located a mere 2km from the nearest lodge, the treehouse provides radio communication with a double door and drawbridge for safety. Guests can expect to hear the constant rush of life from the Sabie River, as well as a few animals, night predators and birds for good measure. The 50m2 deck can accommodate four guests, and children are welcome. The lodge provides you with a torch as there is no electricity and you may find only a few bars of cellphone signal. There is definitely a trend emerging here and it is becoming clear that a treehouse suite is designed to be a complete escape and you need to surrender to it by putting up a barrier between yourself and your urban existence.

ocated at Steenberg Farm, and named after the year in which the farm was established, Bistro Sixteen82 has been recognised both internationally and locally for its culinary delights. Previous accolades include being featured as one of 20 of the World’s Best Winery Restaurants by Canada’s prominent Wine Access magazine, and closer to home, listed as one of Fleur du Cap’s Top 100 Places; featured in Eat In Cape Town magazine and included on Eat Out’s Best Bistros list. Commenting on the new lighter menu for the summer season, Executive Chef Kerry Kilpin says, “as we head into spring, we wanted to introduce some lighter dishes to the menu; it’s more of a transitional menu than a summer menu, as such. It’s made all our wines, excluding the Magna Carta, available by the glass and each one has been specially selected to complement the meal it is paired with. This is definitely a unique offering,” says Kerry. It’s not only the menu that has been refreshed; the bistro itself has received a makeover, with comfortable new seating, stylish new fittings and pops of colour here and there. “A definite highlight for diners is the exposed cellar area, which offers a different element to dining. This area will generally be reserved for larger groups or private functions, but it’s definitely a focal point and a topic of interest, as you notice it as soon as you enter the restaurant,” comments Kerry. Further highlights of the new menu include the Crispy Baby Calamari and Harissa mayo, with sesame tuile, avo pulp and paprika oil, paired with the Steenberg Semillon 2013 and the 5 Spiced Venison Carpaccio, with wild rocket, beetroot, pecorino shavings and juniper dressing, paired with the Steenberg Echo Bordeaux Blend 2012.

Opening in October 2015, Gondwana Game Reserve’s new Eco Camp offers close encounters of the wildlife kind, just a few hours out of Cape Town. The six-day, five-night conservation experience allows guests to participate in wildlife and veld management, learn important bush skills and interpretation, as well as volunteer with the local community. OFFERS RETAILERS NEXT GEN TECHNOLOGY Transparent and reflective displays might look cool, but in terms of home use, their applications are limited. However, retailers looking for some technological wizardry to get shoppers through the door are a different proposition. So it should come as no surprise that Samsung chose the recent Retail Asia Expo 2015 in Hong Kong to unveil the first commercial use of its Mirror and Transparent OLEDs. Just like conventional TVs, reflective and transparent OLEDs promise superior performance to their LCD forebears. Samsung has paired the Mirror OLED display with Intel’s RealSense technology. This sees the inclusion of a front-facing camera for capturing facial movements and tracking finger and hand movements, a rearfacing camera that can scan and measure rooms and objects, and a snapshot camera that allows a photo’s background to be altered after the photo has been taken. These come together to enable the display to create a “virtual fitting room” that allows
customers to virtually try on clothing, shoes and jewellery. Samsung also envisages its Mirror Display replacing some traditional mirrors around the home at some point in the future. The Transparent Display will also integrate RealSense technology, enabling gesture and voice control of 3D-rotatable viewing systems in locations such as car dealerships. They could also serve as interactive signage for public and transport information, and in hotels and retailers.
TWO WORLD TRADE CENTER
DESIGN REVEALED
Denmark’s Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) has unveiled preliminary plans and some renders for Manhattan’s Two World Trade Center, the fourth and final skyscraper slated for the World Trade Center site. BIG’s tower will feature seven separate volumes stacked on top of each other. Reminiscent of children’s toy blocks placed carelessly atop each other, the volumes “lean” toward the direction of the One World Trade Center. The building is also aligned so as to not spoil existing views of St. Paul’s Chapel. The 80-plus story building will rise to a total height of 408 m and comprise 260,000 sqm of usable floor space. Its novel stacking volumes will create 3,530 sqm of outdoor terrace space that will boast greenery and choice views of Manhattan. The interior of the building will feature a focus on large open collaborative spaces that encourage inter-office sharing, and include television studios, informal meeting areas, restaurants and leisure areas, such as basketball courts and a running track. We’ve no word from BIG on an estimated date of completion, but Wired reports that it is set for September 11, 2021.

ccording to the research in the Journal of Consumer Culture having a man-cave can be therapeutic. “In the study, men reported that having their own private den allowed them to display their unique identities, relax, and even reflect on their life goals,” says study co-author Mariam Beruchashvili, Ph.D. “When you’re outside a place to call your own—say, your kitchen filled with dirty dishes—you feel like you’re always ‘on’, as you try to do everything expected of you as a husband or a father,” says Beruchashvili. “But by retreating to a man-cave, you can relax and have some time for yourself. Participants in the study reported that having a space in which to recharge made them better parents and spouses.”
HOW TO TURN ANY ROOM INTO A MAN CAVE Your manly instincts might be screaming for you to run with the wolves or to go out there and start buying sports cars and fast motorcycles all in an effort to find an escape, but when you have responsibilities weighing you down and a family to care for, creating your own personal sanctuary seems more realistic. Your space might be limited and your budget might not stretch to building a full on separate structure next your house complete with a state of the art entertainment centre – but not to worry – there is a way that you can create a man-cave out of any existing room in your home.

01 DESIGN YOUR SPACE
Any major home-improvement project requires serious planning and a keen eye. You should take precise measurements of each wall of the room that you want to transform and then sketch out a rough layout. That way, you can see your ideas come to life and erase any mistakes, without putting in wasted physical effort. It is crucial that you spend some time figuring out how the layout can work to your advantage. For instance, the room might have an alcove that would be perfect for a bar, since you want to place this out of the way of foot traffic. The key to conceptualizing your man-cave is to think about how to fit your particular passions within the area’s limitations and let the design flow from there.
02 THE RIGHT TOOLS FOR THE JOB
Most men will probably have the standard collection of tools in their arsenal like a wrench, hammer, cordless drill and screwdriver. And those will work for most tasks. But if you need to sand down tiles or get any sawing or cutting done, we recommend getting an Oscillating MultiTool which you can buy at just about any hardware store. It’s an extremely versatile piece of equipment that’s easy to manage and allows you to access hard-to-reach places. For more cutting action, consider a circular saw or if you have some money to spend a Mitre Saw, which works well for crown moulding or cabinet work. Table saws are great too, if you have the room but you can probably get by without one by simply using a circular saw with a straight edge. Seeing as we are looking at building a man-cave here, why not bring some real firepower to the party? You could always pick up a compressor nail gun at Builders Warehouse – they have a number of models available including a handy cordless version – just be careful

where you point that thing! Another nifty tool that you could pick up at Builders Warehouse is a Hole Saw. This very useful drill accessory basically consists of a cupshaped saw with a pilot bit in the centre for creating a pilot hole. It is available in a large range of diameters and is ideal for cutting the holes in cupboards, as well as the holes for door handles and taps. Hole saws are also available with tungsten carbide points suitable for metal and tile cutting.
03. THE ALL IMPORTANT TV
Of course the essence and focal point of any man-cave is a kickass HD flat screen TV. Of course bigger is always better but that depends on the amount of space you have available and, of course, none of that even matters if you don’t have the right set up. This means deciding whether you want to flat mount it to the wall, have it swivel or on an articulating

arm and getting the right brackets for whatever you choose. A common mistake is mounting the TV too high up on the wall. If mounted at the right height, you should be able to look at the centre of the screen while standing. You could always take it a step further and build the TV into the wall but you need to consider the thickness of your wall and make allowances for the TV’s vent so that heat doesn’t get trapped. No matter what setup you choose a separate decoder from the rest of the household could be a lifesaver. Then you’ll be able to watch as much Super Sport or History Channel as you like without any bickering.
04. THE PERFECT MAN’S CHAIR
To complete your sanctuary you will need to find some solid furniture. Most men usually opt for leather chairs and sofas for their man-caves because they are easy to maintain and have a nice, upscale look. Cloth upholstery though is resilient to everyday use and still provides plenty of cushioning so basically it comes down to personal preference. Keep in mind though that if you are going to be lighting up some Cubans, fabrics such as wool will hold onto the smell. You don’t need to think minimalist when it comes to choosing the chair that you will be reclining in every time you spend time in your man cave. You can make it as big and comfy as the space will allow and don’t be afraid to think outside the box when it comes to procuring something truly unique. Why not refurbish a vintage recliner or find a use
for the wingback that’s been sitting in the garage for years. If you’re into chairs with massage functions and heating pads, go for it. Or finally buy that authentic Lay-ZBoy you’ve been lusting after for years. The only important thing to consider is comfort, comfort, comfort.
05. STOCK THE BAR
For the average guy on a budget, crafting your own bar rather than buying one that is already fully built is the way to go. You could try constructing your bar using wooden boards from Builders Warehouse (a variety of different wood is on offer) for the frame and plywood for the base. You could then install a smooth granite or marble countertop and dress up the front of the bar with stone or tile – or get really creative and come up with an awesome custom bar front. If granite is too pricey for you, consider formica or high quality veneer plywood on the countertop – treated so it doesn’t sag. You could look at using oak veneer ply which looks amazing once you stain it. For authentic home pub accents, do your research online. There are hundreds of sites out there offering some really cool bar gear such as brass foot rails and tap handles. This is a great way to find rare or vintage special touches such as an antique Guinness mirror or hat rack – and loads more. Of course no bar is complete until it is stocked to the hilt with alcohol. Once you’ve got the basic staples in place, it’s time to tie everything together with your own unique vision. Some of the most enviable man-caves include items that have been repurposed. Some guys might want to make their own coffee table from reclaimed wood or perhaps you’ve always wanted that classic fish tank in the old television piece – it really is up to you and the limits of your own imagination. But you don’t have to be a DIY expert to give the room that extra spark. Some of the coolest accents can be found in storage, someone else’s garage, local antique stores, flea markets or on vintage shopping sites. As for what to avoid when decorating your man cave of course throw pillows, scented candles, doilies, and the colour fuchsia are right up there. And if you’re

going to include photos, we suggest making them as impersonal as possible. The goal here is to try to keep all reminders of the outside world away. If you really need to put up a picture of you holding up that big catch, that’s fine but some might draw the line at lots photos of the wife and kids – but again, it’s your space and personal choice needs to dictate how you decorate it.

OK, you got the flat screen going, the beer in the fridge and the plush recliner locked into the horizontal position. Once those wood shavings are all swept up, it’s time to really bask in your accomplishment.
This is now the centre of your manly universe, a place where you can zone out, free of disturbances, no matter if it’s tucked below ground level, attached like a satellite to a bustling household or a converted version of your kid’s room after they’ve left for university. Just be careful not to get lost down there. Watching sports for nine hours straight or hosting a marathon XBox tournament on occasion is great for those cortisol levels. But a man-cave is only special if it’s an escape, not a destination.

Lexus, like any other car manufacturer has made itself synonymous with vehicles that ride on four wheels which are firmly in contact with the ground. Until now, that is. This summer a new Lexus ‘vehicle’ takes flight, bringing the stuff of science fiction closer to real world fact. Lexus has worked with experts in superconductive technology to create one of the most advanced Hoverboards the world has seen. The concept is the fourth project in its Amazing in Motion campaign, demonstrating its commitment to pursuing new possibilities in advanced design and technology. Mark Templin, Executive Vice President, Lexus International, said: “At Lexus we constantly challenge ourselves and our partners to push the boundaries of what is possible. That determination, combined with

our passion and expertise for design and innovation, is what led us to take on the Hoverboard project. It’s the perfect example of the amazing things that can be achieved when you combine technology, design and imagination.” The Lexus project team has used magnetic levitation with liquid nitrogen-cooled superconductors and permanent magnets to give the Hoverboard frictionless movement of a kind that had been thought impossible. Although a completely different form of transport, the Hoverboard shares design cues with today’s Lexus cars, including the signature spindle grille. It has also been made using some of the same materials, both high-tech and natural, such as bamboo. The Hoverboard is part of the fourth project in the

Lexus Amazing in Motion campaign, an international showcase for the brand’s creativity and innovation. The prototype is being tested in Barcelona in the coming weeks prior to the campaign’s launch this summer. Unfortunately for Back to the Future aficionados the Lexus Hoverboard is a prototype and will not be for sale. The excitement is none the less something that everybody wants to be part of and with the possibilities of hoverboard technology in the future, this might be one to tell the grandkids about! I’ve admired Moët & Chandon for some time because they have long supported international tennis competitions and excellence in the sport. You find a bottle of Moët & Chandon on the winner’s podium at the ATP World Tour Finals or the US Open, and it certainly adds to the celebration.
Which is your favourite Moët & Chandon champagne? I love different Moët & Chandon champagnes for different moments in my life. But my favourite right now is the Grand Vintage 2004; it’s perfect for special celebrations. And this vintage commemorates a specific moment of triumph for me, as 2004 was the first year I was ranked the number one player in the world.
You’re no stranger to celebration – you have countless titles and trophies from throughout your career. Which has been your favourite victorious celebration? the country’s most influential celebrities, business icons and ‘fashionistas’ enjoying an afternoon of champagne glamour while Wawrinka and Djokovic battled it out for the championship. The energetic among the guests even picked up their rackets and enjoyed Moët’s mini tennis court. Truth be told though, they couldn’t have choreographed it if they had tried. And that’s the thing about Moët & Chandon – it’s the world’s most loved champagne because it brings magic to everyone it touches. And if you don’t believe me…I suggest you have a glass, or two.
It’s difficult to pick one! Each win has represented a very different kind of challenge for me. But one of the most significant wins might be my first Grand Slam singles title, because I felt a huge sense of accomplishment when I won – that all of my years of hard work and dedication had paid off.
Another sport other than tennis that you would have loved to practice as a professional? I grew up playing both soccer and tennis and chose tennis when I was 12, but I always dream of what it would have been like to be playing professional soccer.

amon Esteve graduated in Architecture from Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid in 1990. He founded Ramon Esteve Estudio de Arquitectura in 1991, working on both architectural and interior design projects and also other fields such as industrial design and art direction in the national and international arena. “Harmony, serenity and essentiality are some of the constant features of my work and become symbols of my will to provide living spaces that are more than just buildings,” says Esteve. Esteve’s varied portfolio shows off his broad expertise and includes public buildings such as health, educational and cultural facilities as well as private buildings for public use such as bank offices, hotels, leisure facilities, restaurants, commercial ISSUE SEVEN | AVION DE LUXE

premises and pieces of ephemeral architecture. Esteve’s work on exclusive single-family houses is noteworthy on its own – they are true reflections of his philosophy. He sees product design as a logical extension of the architectural field and his studio is currently collaborating with recognised brands such as Vondom, Porcelanosa, Inclass, Vibia, Joquer or Gandia Blasco. Esteve has also been teaching at the School of Architecture of Valencia since 2005 and in 2012 he began presenting residential design seminars at the Master in Interior Design of Universidad CEUCardenal Herrera. In addition to this he is often invited to participate in workshops and conferences on architecture and design across the globe. Esteve has been lauded for his work in both architecture and industrial design. He received the 2011-2013 COACV Prize of Architecture in the category of interior design for the project developed for Chapeau Multibrand Store. His design for the NH Palacio de Tepa Hotel was awarded the 2011 European Hotel Design Awards in the category “Conversion of an Existing Non-Hotel Building to Hotel Use”. He was also an award recipient at the Plus Architecture Awards 2013 for his work at the CEAM Sant Rafael in Ontinyent. Ramon Esteve’s work has been disseminated in more than a hundred collective books and magazine issues including the well known compilation of his selected works: Ramon Esteve: Estudio de Arquitectura. In his own words, Ramon Esteve describes his approach to each design and where he draws his inspiration from. “Several of the constants

in our work are born of the search for harmony, serenity, timelessness, atmosphere, universality and contextualisation. Harmony is the result of a generation of systems and the relationship between all components in the system. Serenity in our work arises from the search for balance in the relationship between shapes and within their geometric universe. Timelessness is a concept born at a particular time with the will to try and evoke the greatest amount of time. Atmosphere evolves from the successful use of the elements of matter and light, so that the only interpretation is its unique fusion. Universality forms as a consequence of the synthesis of ideas reflected in the design elements of the conceptual idea. n one end of its product spectrum Blancpain makes sports watches and on the other end of the spectrum is the classical Villeret collection. Both are made to very high standards and powered by movements designed and manufactured in the Vallée de Joux. And while their designs more geared toward sport and corporate styling usually takes centre stage, their new Villeret pieces are pure works of art. Renowned for its engraving and enamel painting workshops as well as its Damascene timepieces, Blancpain is presenting shakudō. Shakudō, an alloy of Japanese origin principally composed of copper and gold (typically 4–10% gold, 96–90% copper). The material acquires a dark patina varying between blue and black, following a process called passivation, which calls for the application of a solution composed of copper acetate (green gray) – called rokushō in Japan – and subsequent heating of the material. Repeated cycles create an increasingly deeper tone of the patina. The black patina is obtained following

a process called passivation, which calls for the application of a solution. This solution, which is composed of copper acetate (green gray), has been traditionally fabricated in Japan where it is known as rokushō. According to the number of applications of the rokushō solution, the black becomes successively deeper and more intense. The shakudō was used historically, among other things to create swords, decorative objects and jewellery. The artisans who practiced shakudō often added engravings and ornaments. Rarely seen in the world of watchmaking, Blancpain has brought this art form forward to today with a series of unique pieces which reflect the expertise of the Manufacture in the practices of Métiers d’Art. No less than four different models are being presented which combine shakudō, engraving and Damascening. Each timepiece will be exclusive as it will reflect the individual handcrafts of the artisan and his or her style of engraving, rokushō patina. The different resulting nuances in depth render each work truly unique.
The five designs that Blancpain is introducing in the les Metiers d’Art Villaret Shakudo series feature the Hindu god Ganesh, a goat, Carp fish, Griffin and the Tree of Life. The Griffin in particular shows incredible detail – the fine engraving of the hieroglyphics on the bricks at its feet and in the background show a unique artistry. Finely detailed, the ornaments represented on this piece have been crafted in Damascene. This technique consists of fashioning troughs upon the dial surface into which fine threads of soft metal, in this case gold, are painstakingly hammered in place, thereupon to be hand engraved. Fully respecting the aesthetics of the Villeret collection, these models are housed in a red gold stepped bezel case of 45 mm, the diameter of which gives free reign to the creativity of Blancpain’s craftsmen. Through the sapphire case back, one can gaze upon the hand wound calibre 15B decorated with hand applied Côtes de Genève (Geneva stripes).

tarfleet Machine is engineered and crafted by L’Epée 1839, Switzerland’s only remaining specialised high-end clock manufacturer, founded in 1839. Starfleet Machine is an intergalactic spaceship-cum-table clock, featuring hours and minutes, double retrograde seconds and power reserve indicator. The highly visible, superlatively finished in-house movement boasts an exceptional power reserve of 40 days (you need a large fuel tank for long space voyages). Starfleet Machine has been designed by MB&F, the award-winning artistic and micro-engineering laboratory. Hours and minutes are indicated on the central black dome by hand-polished hands that follow the dome’s curved contours. Behind that, a smaller rotating dome, accompanied by a revolving radar dish, provides an intuitive view of remaining energy: five bars indicates the movement is fully wound (40 days of power); one bar means Starfleet Machine is running low on propellant (eight days of remaining power) – it’s all relative – most table clocks have a maximum power reserve of only eight days. Below 12 o’clock on the central hourminute dome are the double retrograde seconds in the form of turret-mounted laser cannons. The cannons start in

parallel and cross over one another before rapidly flying out again, an action marking off 20-second intervals. The red-tipped cannons provide eyecatching visual animation, and perhaps just as importantly, fend off enemy attacks against the core of the craft just underneath: the regulator, which has deliberately been placed in full view for all to admire. One of the biggest challenges for L’Epée was respecting the movement configuration required by MB&F’s spacecraft design. L’Epée’s calibre – featuring five main spring barrels (in series for optimal performance) – usually equips vertically standing clocks, but here it is laid flat. The escapement platform also had to be set horizontally to be protected by the turret-mounted laser cannons. Naturally, the movement beats with a precision that Starfleet would be proud of, for an impressive accuracy of -2 to +2 minutes over 40 days! Every component (except the 48 jewels) of the superlatively finished palladium-treated brass movement is designed and manufactured at L’Epée’s Swiss atelier. The gears and mainspring barrels are on full display thanks to the skeletonised mainplate and concentric C-shaped external structure in stainless
steel. Starfleet Machine can rest on both ends of its vertical landing gear; useful for when you turn it over to wind the mainspring and set the time. Starfleet Machine comes with its own transparent biosphere dome, fitting over the top and following the contours of the vessel’s three graceful arcs. In intergalactic missions, the dome creates a life-supporting habitat for the vessel and its crew on inhospitable planets. Here on earth, it protects Starfleet Machine from potential environmental hazards incompatible with high-end clocks: dust and curious fingers! The dome is made in polished glass which, given its smooth profile and handle-free form, makes it light and easily removable when turning the clock over for time setting and winding. When conceiving Starfleet Machine, MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser set out to boldly go where no clock designer had gone before, and L’Epée has enthusiastically enjoyed the ride. CEO Arnaud Nicolas says: “MB&F’s idea for Starfleet Machine blew my mind. Like Max, I am a big sci-fi fan so when MB&F came to us with the design, we had to accept the challenge. Our team has been really inspired by this piece, and we think others will be too.”

he award-winning actor hit a top speed of 180.361 mph (290.263 km/h) at the wheel of a new Bentley Continental GT Speed on Pendine Sands, Wales. This broke the existing record of 174.8 mph (281.313 km/h) set by Sir Malcolm nearly 90 years ago in his legendary Napier-Campbell Blue Bird. The record was independently verified by the UK Timing Association. Elba, who famously played Nelson Mandela in the multi-award winning Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, said: “I’m absolutely elated to have broken the ‘Flying Mile’ at Pendine Sands. It’s an honour to have taken on the challenge and to successfully follow in the footsteps of the illustrious Sir Malcolm Campbell.” Despite some challenging tidal conditions on the beach in south Wales, the record was broken in the Crewe-built Continental during filming for an upcoming four-part Discovery Channel series, Idris Elba: No Limits, which aired in July 2015.

Comprising cutting edge engineering including that sourced from the brand’s successful GT racing campaign, the car features a carbon fibre monocoque and body constructed by Aston Martin’s longterm specialist body engineering and manufacturing partner Multimatic, integral limited-slip differential, magnesium torque tube with carbon fibre propeller shaft and Brembo racing calipers acting on carbon ceramic racing disc brakes which measure 380mm in diameter at the front and 360mm at the rear. So what would Tesla Energy mean for Africa? According to experts Tesla’s battery storage system could help the

energy-starved continent switch from expensive fossil fuels to renewables, but high cost is a huge barrier. There is major hype around the idea of Tesla’s Powerwall home-storage batteries being the next big thing in African energy. This comes as no surprise given that just 30% of the population in Africa have access to electricity. In countries like Nigeria, diesel-powered generators are the current go-to solution for their chronic, daily national power cuts. Tesla’s Powerwall battery works as a back-up that is not reliant on fossil fuels. It stores renewable energy like solar and wind and can last more than 24 hours – at no cost other than the upfront cost of the Powerwall itself. Affordability will be the main stumbling block to Africa’s energy consumers (who fall mainly within the low-income

bracket) adopting the Powerwall. Tesla’s 7-kilowatt-hours (kWh) capacity battery costs US$3000 upfront, excluding installation but the average income in subSaharan Africa falls far short of US$3000. The average urban African household only needs six hours of energy a day to run productively – rural households require much less. Since the Powerwall can offer more than 24 hours of uninterrupted power supply there may be ways to deliver the Tesla solution in a corporate pool to rural communities, rather than to individual households, for whom costs would be prohibitive. For this to be carried out though, government policies for renewable energy would need to be favourable. Even if Tesla plans to introduce a grant element or cheaper version of the Powerwall battery pack to off-grid African markets,
THE TESLA POWERWALL Tesla’s Powerwall is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery designed to store energy at a residential level for load shifting, backup power and self-consumption of solar power generation. Powerwall consists of Tesla’s lithium-ion battery pack, liquid thermal control system and software that receives dispatch commands from a solar inverter. The unit mounts seamlessly onto a wall and is integrated with the local grid to harness excess power and give customers the flexibility to draw energy from their own reserve. The 10kWh Powerwall is optimized to provide backup when the grid goes down, providing power for your home when you need it most. When paired with solar power, the 7kWh Powerwall can be used in daily cycling to extend the environmental and cost benefits of solar into the night when sunlight is unavailable.

TESLA ENERGY FOR BUSINESSES Tesla’s energy storage allows businesses to capture the full potential of their facility’s solar arrays by storing excess generation for later use and delivering solar power at all times. Tesla Energy for Businesses anticipates and discharges stored power during a facility’s times of highest usage, reducing the demand charge component of the energy bills. Energy storage for business is designed to maximise consumption of on-site clean power, avoid peak demand charges and buy electricity when it’s cheapest. Its purpose is also to get paid by utility or intermediate service providers for participating in grid services and to back up critical business operations in the event of a power outage. a communal platform for Tesla batteries in Africa may still require a government subsidy scheme. The downside to this would be that subsidies could undermine the move towards cleaner energy sources on the continent and place a huge economic burden on countries. This is a price that some might be willing to pay in order to accelerate Africa’s permanent transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy, thus aiding the continent’s fight against environmentally destructive greenhouse gas emissions. Existing small-scale solar battery devices simply cannot compete with Tesla’s Powerwall battery, which is capable of supplying 1,000 watts for at least 10 hours or more. The impact on

everyday life in tasks such as cooking and study-lighting for school children could be monumental. Already, Africa’s offgrid communities that have moved from wood-burning to solar power lanterns have enjoyed both health and economic benefits. According to Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO and Co-founder, the batteries will be manufactured in the United States and the manufacturing facility to do so is currently under construction. The technology for manufacturing the batteries, he says, is already available. It’s clear that this invention shows immense potential to be more than just a cost effective power solution. According to Musk the entire United States power
grid could be replaced with just 160 million of these units. Globally two billion units could provide storage for 20 trillion kWh – enough to power the entire world. As of June, the Tesla Powerwalls were already sold out, with reservations slots filled up until the middle of 2016. Within the first few weeks, reservations for households totalled over 50,000 units while industries have ordered some 25,000 units of the power pack. With the product already available in the US, industry experts are optimistic that within a year it might be available to the areas that need it most. The energy revolution that the world has been waiting for has begun – with Tesla leading the charge.
