Jerome Jacobs SPAR Northrand Marketing Director

Greetings SPAR WOMEN’S CHALLENGE RACERS!

I

n the spirit of this year’s race theme, Better Together, we thought we would write a combined letter because we thought we could write it, well…better together! SPAR’s belief in working together originates from the vision of our Dutch founder, Adriaan van Well, when he established our organisation back in 1932. That original sentiment is as relevant today as it was back then – that we can all benefit by working together. Our belief in working together with the community is founded on the conviction that our customers are our pillars. Working with our customers is incredibly important to us as this 4

enables us to give back to our community – which is what SPAR is all about. Being better together in the community is about more than just giving – it’s about being personally involved, it’s about caring, it’s about showing up, it’s about really building relationships in the community that we serve and it’s about forging partnerships with our consumers and our retailers. It’s about authentically caring – that is really what makes us great. This is what we mean when we talk about the fact that we are better together. No one understands what better together means more than our valued race sponsors.

“TO ME OUR RACE THEME, BETTER TOGETHER, IS INCREDIBLY SIGNIFICANT AND RESONATES DEEPLY WITH ME PERSONALLY FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS. IT’S A BELIEF IN A UNIVERSAL BOND OF SHARING THAT CONNECTS ALL OF HUMANITY. WE THINK OF OURSELVES JUST AS INDIVIDUALS BUT WE ARE ALL CONNECTED AND WHAT WE DO AFFECTS ALL OF US AND WHEN WE DO THINGS THAT BENEFIT ONE ANOTHER, ALL OF HUMANITY BENEFITS.” – DESMOND BORRAGEIRO, MANAGING DIRECTOR SPAR NORTH RAND AND BOTSWANA

They line up year after year to support this amazing event – and really without them we could have never achieved what we have over the many years that we have been holding the race. What we want the women running the race this year to take away from the better together message is that no one person is an island and that everyone has a role to play. You have to be actively involved as far as possible to join others and make a real difference. As proud South Africans and in the spirit of

Ubuntu, the race theme is a call to action for us to stand united as a nation to celebrate our diversity, to harness its potential and to create a better South Africa for everyone. The nationwide interest and participation in this race is inspiring and it all comes together when over 25 000 women run side by side on race day as one big, happy SPAR family. See you on race day!

Desmond Borrageiro & Jerome Jacobs

We are

“TO ME, THE BETTER TOGETHER THEME REALLY SPEAKS TO GREATNESS AND THAT’S WHAT OUR RACE IS ALL ABOUT. IT’S ABOUT PEOPLE WORKING TOGETHER; IT’S ABOUT PEOPLE ENCOURAGING EACH OTHER TO BE BETTER. A CLASSIC EXAMPLE OF THIS IS THE TIRELESS WORK DONE BY OUR LOCAL ORGANISING COMMITTEE WHO WORK AS A TEAM TO MAKE THIS RACE HAPPEN.” – JEROME JACOBS, SPAR NORTH RAND MARKETING DIRECTOR

Thank you to all our Sponsors:

his year there is something special happening in the SPAR head office as we prepare for the 2017 Pretoria SPAR Women’s Challenge. That is because team work, mutual support and lending a helping hand have become more than just a motto for us. This year’s race theme is ‘Better Together’ and I have been truly inspired to see how this powerful message has filtered into the hearts and minds of everyone at SPAR and each individual on our local race organising committee. I believe that there is only one phrase more powerful than ‘I can’ and that is ‘we can’! Every person plays an imperative role in making this race a success and when I say this, I am not only referring to the organising committee but to every person involved from the cleaners who restore 6

our race’s home, SuperSport Park, to its pristine condition after we’ve all had our fun on race day to the person in charge of capturing the day through a lens to help spread our SPAR Women’s Challenge message far and wide. Everyone has a part to play, no part is too small or too great and every bit of energy creates a spark that leads to the absolute explosion of positive force on race day. Among those with whom we are certainly better together are the SPAR store owners, everyone at head office and our treasured sponsors who are the cornerstones of the race. It is because of you that we can race together and give back together. I would like to say a very special word of thanks and take a moment to recognise the race’s ‘silent’ supporters – the parents,

husbands, wives, friends and general cheerleaders. Without your support of those who work tirelessly to pull it off, this race would not happen. And if you were not completely sure what lies at the heart of the better together message – this should drive it home for you – the seemingly endless network of love and support that make this event happen. I look forward to seeing you all on race day and to seeing the pride on your faces when you see what we are able to achieve when we stand united.

Although the race day atmosphere is hard to capture, these pictures do it justice!

AFTER THE TRAGIC LOSS OF HER LEG, SINGLE MOTHER ANNELIE KOEKMOER IS DETERMINED TO WALK AGAIN. SHE STILL HAS A LONG WAY TO GO AND THE ROAD AHEAD WILL NOT BE EASY BUT WITH STAND WITH STAN AND SPAR BY HER SIDE, SHE FOUND THE STRENGTH TO TAKE IT ONE STEP AT A TIME.

One Step

43

year old Annelie was living on a farm near Cullinan with her three sons; Lionel (20), Johan (17) and Rudolph (13) when she lost her leg in a freak accident. In December 2010 while cutting grass on the farm, Annelie was accidentally caught between the tractor and slasher they were using. Her leg was catastrophically injured and because she did not belong to a medical aid at the time, she was taken to Mamelodi hospital. In an attempt to save her leg she was in hospital for 6 months but the numerous treatments she received were all unsuccessful. Since the accident Annelie and her sons had to move from their farm to Pretoria, but this hardworking mother was determined to keep living and to provide for her sons. She was employed at a motor dealership where she has worked for the past three years. In April 2015 she developed an infection in her leg that forced her back into hospital. This time she was admitted to Eugene Marais where Dr JM Frantzen treated her 16

at no cost. It was at this stage the decision was made that there was nothing more to be done but to amputate her leg. Just less than a year later, at Steve Biko Hospital she received a prosthetic leg but has been unable to use the leg at all. It was then that she met Jaco Deist of Deist & Associates. Deist determined that Annelie’s leg is still swollen, not shaped at all and will need compression to start shaping the residual limb. Deist then teamed up with Stand With Stan to make sure that Annelie got the help she needed to one day wear a prosthesis and walk again. Stand With Stan founder Stan Andrews, who is an amputee himself, founded the

at a Time organisation in 2013 with the sole purpose of assisting amputees in need who can’t afford the costs of prosthetics. “The national health care system simply does not have the capacity to give amputees and especially leg amputees the treatment and prosthetics needed to resume an active lifestyle,” says Andrews. “At the moment Annelie is on a silicone liner to assist with the process of shrinking her stump. She will need at least three fittings before her stump will reach the size where her final prosthetic leg could be cast.” Annelie is optimistic though and says she is willing to do whatever it takes to walk again. “There are many things that I am looking forward to doing once I am mobile and independent again, like walks and going to gym,” says Annelie. All three of her sons are avid rugby players. Her biggest dream is to be next to the rugby field supporting them again. According to Stan, the funds raised at this year’s SPAR Women’s Challenge will make her dream come true by the next rugby season!

“Thank you to SPAR for their generous donation last year! We were able to settle the outstanding medical bills of eight patients and buy two new wheelchairs, gifts for the Pretoria Christmas Party as well as surprising a few patients on their birthdays while they were receiving treatment in hospital. Each of us are unique, we have been blessed with different talents and gifts, if we all come together and use our gifts, we are definitely BETTER TOGETHER! Thank you SPAR and all our Cupcake Angels for coming together and blessing our brave little cancer fighters!”

SANDY CIPRIANO

FOUNDER OF CUPCAKES OF HOPE

“We are extremely grateful for the funds we received from the SPAR Women’s Challenge race last year. We used these funds to help the ladies from our poorest communities through two specific programmes in our community development. The first is our Educare programmes where our mothers in need can bring their children everyday free of charge to receive basic education as well as basic needs such as food, attention, love, and social and psychological support. For some children this is the only place they receive any food because the poverty is so severe and the mothers struggle to make ends meet. Secondly we used the funds for our womanhood projects. This is a safe place where our women get the support they need to survive. We teach them new skills and crafts in a therapeutic environment where they share with one another and receive the social and psychological support they need. Over the past two years these ladies also took part in the SPAR Women’s Challenge. For some it was and still is the big highlight of their year. They feel that they have accomplished something and for one day they are exactly the same as other women. The medals will go right up the wall and they talk about the race for the rest of the year. This opportunity means the whole world to them. At Hanna Charity & Empowerment Foundation we strive to offer hope and restore dignity and this is exactly what SPAR Women's Challenge does for our ladies in need.”

“Each year Irene Homes has the privilege of packing the goodie bags for the Pretoria SPAR Women’s Challenge. This is done by our residents and day workers in our Protective Workshop’s as part of our job creation initiative. We have packed 26 000 bags for which we received a generous cash donation from SPAR. With this money we were able to accommodate the developmental and occupational needs of 134 residents and day workers. We were able to equip all our rooms with heaters to ensure that all our day workers receive a cooked lunch and to purchase additional equipment and material to be used in the workshop programmes to enable residents and day workers to develop their conceptual skills, social skills and practical skills. At Irene Homes we work together to enable residents and day workers who are intellectually disabled to grow to their fullest potential. We can only do this through opportunities like the packing of the goodie bags for the SPAR Women’s Challenge. Thank you SPAR for acknowledging the potential of intellectually disabled people – we are ready to pack goodie bags for 2017.”

“Jacaranda FM’s Good Morning Angels has been a beneficiary of proceeds from the annual SPAR Women's Challenge Pretoria, for more than five years. Thanks to the generous donations of SPAR and through our Good Morning Angels property, we are able to effect change in a meaningful way to those in need. A special thank you to our gracious ambassador, Dianne Broodryk, who manages this portfolio with such finesse. I just don’t know how she manages to hold back the tears with some of the requests we receive. Last year, the R50 000 donation from SPAR was used for two separate requests. The first was Heneka Haven, a very special home in Pretoria East. They take in homeless children who have special needs and in some cases suffer from terminal illness. At the time, Heneka Haven’s representative, Yolandie Petzer, informed us that they were taking care of eleven children; five girls and seven boys between the ages of one and twelve years old. SPAR donated R20 000 to help them to buy supplies and care for their special residents. The second recipient of the SPAR Women’s Challenge 2016 donation was an inspirational matriculant, eighteen year old Kagiso Kgotlhang. His high school achievements included; coming 3rd in the academic Top Ten and athletics provincial championship participation. Kagiso’s reality is that he has no parents. They both died in 2005. His aunt took him in

and raised him but she too passed away in March last year. Kagiso lives with his twenty six year old brother, Modise, in a small room. The local church helped them with meals and he received R350 per month from government grants, as Modise works for a very small salary. Adding to his despair, Kagiso lost the sight in his both eyes due to cataracts. The situation left Kagiso with poor halfyear marks. Knowing his potential and learning of his dire situation at home, his school Hoërskool Die Fakkel, reached out to Good Morning Angels for help. The school managed to get help from the Department of Education and both of Kagiso’s eyes were operated on. SPAR gave Kagiso and Modise R25 000 in SPAR vouchers for a year, to help him and his brother with monthly groceries. Kagiso passed matric with excellent marks and top achievements. Through his hard work and dedication, he has secured a full threeyear scholarship at the ETA College in Centurion. He has started the first year of a Sport & Recreation Management course and is doing extremely well. Daily life remains a battle, but Kagiso is not letting that bring him off track on his journey to a healthy, prosperous life.”

STAR ATHLETES AND MANY TIME VICTORS OF THE SPAR WOMEN’S CHALLENGE RACES ACROSS THE COUNTRY, MAPASEKA MAKHANYA AND RENE KALMER, HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCED AS THE PATRONS OF THE 2017 SPAR GRAND PRIX.

Mapaseka Makhanya expressed her support for fellow runner, Zimbawean Rutendo Nyahora who is now eligible to accumulate Grand Prix points as a non-South African runner.

T

he new look SPAR Grand Prix kicked off on Sunday, 2 April when 21 000 women took part in the Cape Town Women’s Challenge at the Mother City’s Green Point stadium precinct. For the first time, non-South Africans are eligible to accumulate Grand Prix points, which is very good news for Zimbabwean Rutendo Nyahora, who has been one of the most consistent top ten runners in the series for the past few years. Two of South Africa’s most popular road runners, Mapaseka Makhanya and Rene Kalmer, have been named patrons of the Grand Prix this year. Both are former Grand Prix winners, with Kalmer having won the title three times and Makhanya once. Kalmer gave birth to daughter Karli in March, and is not expected to take part in any of the races before the Durban Challenge in June, and Makhanya is making her way back into contention after a series of injuries. “I feel very honoured to be a patron of the SPAR Grand Prix,” 22

said Kalmer. “I have been unable to run for nearly a year, first because of a hip injury, and then because I was pregnant. So I am very happy that I am still able to be part of the SPAR Women’s Challenge Series.” Makhanya said she was very excited about the changes that had been made to the Grand Prix. These include the addition of the Pietermaritzburg race on 20 August 2017, which joins Cape Town which took place on 2 April 2017, Nelson Mandela Bay which was held on 6 May 2017, Durban on 11 June 2017, Pretoria on 5 August 2017 and Johannesburg on 8 October 2017 as races where elite runners are able to acquire Grand Prix points. The Grand Prix prize money has also been increased substantially – this year’s winner will be taking home R173 000. There will also be cash incentives for winners who meet target times. “I am particularly excited that the Grand Prix is now open to non-South Africans, and I am so happy for Rutendo. She is going to make life tough for the rest of us who are trying to win Grand Prix points,” said Makhanya. “I am very excited about being named a patron of the Grand Prix. It is a big honour, and I know I will have to be a role model for other runners.” Kalmer said the SPAR Challenge races had been very important for the development of road running in South Africa. “I ran my first SPAR Women’s Challenge race when I was 13, and they have played a very important role in my

development as an athlete. I think many runners have discovered the joy of running after taking part in one of the SPAR races. “At the top level, competition is very tight – you used to be able to win the race with a time of 35 minutes – now you might not even make the top twenty with a time like that,” she said. “Because there are five – and now six – races in the Grand Prix, you are motivated throughout the year.” Makhanya said it was particularly fulfilling to run in races designed specifically for women. “The atmosphere of the SPAR races is very special. I can’t wait to get going with this year’s chase.”

WHEN A

Brand Name BECOMES A VERB THE NEW FLAGSHIP SUPERSPAR AT MENLYN MAINE HAS EMBODIED THE QUALITY, WARMTH AND FRIENDLINESS THAT IS SYNONYMOUS WITH THE SPAR BRAND AND IT’S ALL DOWN TO THE INSPIRED VISION OF OWNER, PETER ARSALIDES.

24

2017 • MY RACE MAGAZINE

I

t is precisely this vision that saw Peter winning the coveted Mr SPAR award earlier this year – an award given in recognition of success, focus, and commitment. Peter’s approach in the design of the SUPERPSPAR Menlyn Maine has been labelled as visionary with some saying that this store in particular has changed the way we will view retail for years to come. The Menlyn Maine developers aimed to create a retail centre that embraces the highest quality in retail while making the lowest possible environmental impact. In keeping with this vision, SUPERPSPAR Menlyn Maine utilises the lightest lighting, refrigeration and heating technologies

to reduce the store’s overall power consumption to half of what a regular store of a similar size would use. They have also implemented numerous water saving initiatives as well as heat efficient baking equipment. What makes this store truly unique though is the customer experience that the entire store concept was built around. Peter sought to create a different look and feel for each separate department while still maintaining cohesiveness with the overall store concept. This was flawlessly achieved by the procurement of store fittings that seem as though they belong in an upmarket home. Fine looking display fridges seem to float atop glass

pedestals and freshly produced products are stacked neatly on Peter Cronje tables made from the finest French oak. Glass extractors, aluminium counter tops and marble walls serve as backdrops while the food takes centre stage. This truly is retail as we have never seen it before. All this is of course backed up by a quality food offering. From the incredible bakery section and freshly prepared sushi to the delectable deli – every taste is catered for. The incredible fresh food selection is complemented by an impressive grocery line up to ensure that customers want for nothing when shopping at SUPERPSPAR Menlyn Maine. 2017 • MY RACE MAGAZINE

MOST PEOPLE ARE RELUCTANT TO ASK FOR HELP, BUT IN FACT IT IS A SKILL THAT CAN BE LEARNED – AND YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED AT THE MANY AREAS OF YOUR LIFE THAT CAN BE GREATLY ENHANCED BY HAVING A HELPING HAND. THE TRUTH IS THAT EVERYONE IS WORSE OFF ALONE PROVING THAT WE ARE IN FACT, BETTER TOGETHER!

A

s with so many things that would serve us (and others), when it comes to seeking help, our fear gets in the way. Fear of over-stepping a friendship, appearing too needy, of imposing or of revealing our struggle and having people realize we don’t have it all together after all. “If you've ever shied away from asking for help because of fear that you may seem weak, you aren't alone. It's a sad irony that it's during the times we most need to ask for help that most people are reluctant to do so,” says life coach, Marjorie Wells. “Learning how and when to ask for help, not only helps us when times are tough and we’re struggling, but it also gives others the opportunity to make a difference and helps them feel more comfortable to ask for help too,” Marjorie explains, adding that when we support other people to be more successful, we discover opportunities for collaboration that ultimately enable us to be more successful ourselves. The conclusion we can draw from this it that our lives are richer – not poorer – when we share our gifts with others. So whether you need someone to lend you a hand, or you just need to borrow an ear, consider this: by having the courage to ask for help you’re not putting them out, you’re pulling them up! So what are some of the areas of your life you should be seeking help – or expert advice – for?

Secondly, asking for help can be a great way to grow your network. If you have your own business, you probably already have some sort of network established—friends, family members, former colleagues, etc. As a business owner, there are a few instances when it’s never a bad idea to think about asking others for help. The most obvious time is when things aren’t going well. It’s usually also the time when you’re feeling the most vulnerable. No one likes to fail, especially aspiring entrepreneurs. In times like these, it’s important to

BUSINESS BACKING

“For some unfortunate reason, there’s a belief among a lot of young entrepreneurs that asking for help is a sign of weakness. Many believe that to be successful as a new entrepreneur, you have to ‘fake it till you make it,’” says business blogger Sujan Verma. “And so they refuse to ever ask for help—even when they need it most. I believe it’s a big part of why so many start-ups crash and burn within the first year of operation.” When it comes to entrepreneurship, asking for help can actually end up being a pretty smart business move. Firstly, asking for help can make it a lot easier to boost brand awareness and build up your own reputation among other entrepreneurs—which is especially essential if you’re new to entrepreneurship or new to a particular industry.

remember that there are a lot of people out there who would be willing and able to help you if they knew you needed it. You just have to have the courage to ask. Asking for help even when things are going well can be beneficial. Here are a few other times when you should consider asking for help: • When your business is brand new. • When you’re launching a new product (or just thinking about it). • When you’re looking for partners. 2017 • MY RACE MAGAZINE

• When you’re expanding into a new industry. • When you want to reach new audiences.

WORK PLACE PROGRESS

We spend 80% of our time at work making this easily the most important area of our lives in which to ask for help. If you are looking to be promoted, improve your leadership skills or take on more responsibility, chances are you cannot do it alone. And yet, studies show that so many people are reluctant to admit to needing help in the work place. Business coach Laurie Simmons says that there are various reasons for this. “People rationalise it by telling themselves ‘if I can’t do it on my own, I must not have the skills to do it’ or ‘other people are just as busy as me so how could they find the time to help out’, or convince themselves that it would be easier and quicker to do it themselves than to train or teach someone to help,” she explains. These are all very strong stories we tell ourselves about what it could mean to ask for and to receive support. It’s no wonder we don’t do it often and why we are all feeling overwhelmed and distracted, and overcompensate for tasks that continuously exhaust our abilities and energy. The reality is, according to Simmons, that we are more powerful, stronger and effective when we work together.

MOST OF US ARE CONSTANTLY WORRYING ABOUT HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT OR ARE JUST CONCERNED WITH IMPROVING OUR HEALTH

When we co-create, we can produce better outcomes and more innovative solutions in shorter periods of time than if we were to try to do everything on our own, here’s why: • When you ask for support, you maintain focus and energy as the task is shared with others. This increases efficiency. • When you ask for support, you create opportunities for others to shine and you learn more about others’ strengths and passions. • When you ask for support, you allow others to experience the happiness that comes from giving which can in fact stimulate bonding between co-workers. 28

• When you ask for support, you are trusting in others, which will strengthen the trust between you and your supporters.

FITNESS FRUSTRATION

Getting into shape – try to ask yourself when last you did not have this on your mind? Most of us are constantly worrying about how to lose weight or are just concerned with improving our health. When it comes to your physical wellbeing it is best to consult an expert to make sure that you are reaching your goals and that you do not injure yourself – making this one of the most important things to seek help for!

The image of a personal trainer yelling and pushing clients to near collapse may scare some people away from hiring a trainer, but understanding the potential benefits of a personal trainer can help you decide if the financial investment is worthwhile. So how would you benefit from seeking expert help when it comes to fitness? • Goal Achievement: While you might have certain goals in mind, a professional is able to help you break them down into smaller, specific and realistic goals. • Personalized Workouts: Personal trainers create a specific workout plan just for you based on what you want to achieve which will give you better results. • Instruction: A professional trainer teaches you the proper way to perform each exercise movement in your routine which reduces your risk of injury. • Motivation: Motivation is often difficult to maintain when you exercise on your own. Regular sessions with a personal trainer will enhance your motivation. • Accountability: When you exercise on your own, it is easier to skip a session here and there or fall off the wagon completely since there's no one to hold you accountable for your actions. • Variety: An experienced trainer teaches you a variety of exercise methods to keep you from getting bored. If a specific exercise does not work for you, a trainer has the knowledge to change it to one that suits you better with the same physical benefits. • Efficiency: A professional personal trainer is able to make the most of your workout time, which increases the efficiency of your exercise program. This is especially beneficial when you have a limited amount of time to exercise.

THERAPEUTIC PROBLEM SOLVING

Seeking psychological help is possibly one of the most underrated yet most beneficial ways of improving any facet of your life. Talk therapy is so beneficial because it can help all sorts of people in 30

lots of different situations. It works just as well whether you're old or young, male or female, black or white, gay or straight, rich or poor. It helps anyone who is going through a bad time or has emotional problems they can't sort out on their own. And for many adults, it can be more effective than medication. One of the reasons it works so well is because sometimes it's easier to talk to a stranger than to relatives or friends. A therapist will give you time to talk, cry, shout or just think. It's an opportunity to look at your problems in a different way with someone who will respect you and your opinions. Although there are lots of different types of talk therapy, they all have a similar

aim: to help you feel better. Some people say that talk therapy didn’t make their problems go away, but they found it easier to cope and to feel happier. You can talk to a therapist about anything but the most common reasons to seek psychological help are: • For mental health such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders or addiction. • For working through difficult life events. • For improving the condition of patients suffering physical illness such as a stroke or heart disease. • For experiencing trouble with marital or family relationships.

How to get better at asking for help

01

Choose your moment wisely You don’t need to put off asking for help until the “perfect” time...but equally, try to avoid making a request at what’s clearly a bad moment.

02 BECAUSE…LIFE!

Sometimes, we all just need a little help. Today’s lifestyle is so fast paced and in feeling overwhelmed, many of us ask ourselves what it would take to simply get our lives in order. Enter the life coach! Life Coaching is an on-going professional relationship that can help you to produce extraordinary results in your life, career or business. Life Coaching is not counselling or therapy; it is about looking forward and achieving positive results in your life. A life coach can show you techniques and simple strategies for helping you to close the gap between where you are now and where you want to be. There are many benefits to seeking help from a life coach: • Clarity: Knowing what you want is often half the battle. A life coach helps you to clarify what you would like to achieve. On an on-going basis, coaching will help you to get and stay clear about your goals and the direction you would like to head in. • Accountability: Accountability is a 32

2017 • MY RACE MAGAZINE

powerful tool for creating change. When engaged in the life coaching process, the simple act of telling someone else what you intend to do can make a huge difference towards achieving it. You will also learn why you have not achieved certain goals or to drop one if you realise it no longer inspires you. • Unbiased Input: Friends and family can be a great source of support, but sometimes unbiased input can make a big difference to your perspective and help you to see things about yourself and your life situation differently. • The Opportunity to Focus on You: In day to day life, you and your wants and needs get neglected. Life coaching gives you the space to think about you and can enable you to carve out space in your life for your goals and what is important to you. • Personal Development: Life coaching can be challenging and hard work, though also rewarding and fun. You will be looking at yourself honestly and challenging yourself to push yourself beyond your comfort zones.

Be clear about what you need If you make vague, blanket statements like “I wish I had some help around the house” then you’re not doing yourself or the people around you any favours.

03

Provide resources that they’ll need Obviously, some tasks are straightforward, though some might be new to the person helping you. It’s not fair to give out a task and leave them struggling or not knowing how to complete it.

04

Thank them for helping If you want someone to feel positive about helping you – and to do so again in the future – then make sure you remember to thank them.

WHAT BETTER TOGETHER REALLY MEANS CHALLENGES ARE UNCOMFORTABLE, THEY EXPOSE US, MAKE US LOOK SILLY, AND CAN OFTEN LEAD TO FAILURE. BUT I HAVE LEARNED THAT GROWTH, DEVELOPMENT, OPPORTUNITY AND ULTIMATELY SUCCESS ARE GUARANTEED WHEN WE DECIDE TO ACCEPT AND OVERCOME CHALLENGES. JUST THINK…IF YOU DON’T FACE YOUR CHALLENGES, YOU’VE ALREADY FAILED.

e all want to be successful, but most of us are not because we choose a path of avoidance instead of assertion. We choose to avoid obstacles instead of blasting through them. Also, no one is an island. So why do we try to take on challenges alone? In fact, sometimes the more difficult the challenge, the more we choose to keep quiet about it. It’s as if we are too embarrassed, too shy or too fearful that we might fail, and in asking someone to help share the load we might not only disappoint ourselves, but someone else as well. We forget that we are social creatures. Our very DNA dictates that we must engage others for our survival, and ultimately our success. If you look silly in trying, you can laugh together with your colleague, and at each milestone you can celebrate your success with people on the same mission as you. Anyway, who wants to celebrate their success alone, or worse…with envious haters, or those who had nothing to do with supporting you. Why not map out a journey of discovery toward your goal with those who understand that the journey is where the adventure and fun lies? That as long as you and your team keep moving forward, it doesn’t matter if you fail, in fact, failure is part of the process towards success. 2017 • MY RACE MAGAZINE

Life

There is no better example of this, for me, than one of the most exemplary leaders who ever lived, our late president, Nelson Mandela. While Nelson Mandela was president, he often invited business executives of organisations to join him for breakfast meetings at his home. On one such occasion, President Mandela invited a local BP executive named Peter to breakfast to check on the progress of a primary school he had requested be built in the Eastern Cape. Peter was so ecstatic that he could hardly wait for the breakfast date with Mr Mandela. When the day finally came, he dressed in his finest suit, and asked one of the company drivers, Dumi, to take him to Mr Mandela’s home. Peter was amazed when they arrived to find Madiba waiting for them in the car park. Peter was elated and humbled that this great man would be waiting for them outside. Madiba gestured that they come inside for breakfast. However, following corporate behaviour and protocol, Dumi retreated quietly and waited in the car outside. As Mr Mandela invited Peter to the breakfast table, he noticed something seemed to be missing, and asked, “Peter, I thought there were two of you?” Peter answered, “No. Had I known I could have invited someone else, I would have gladly brought a colleague along.” “But what about the other gentleman,” Madiba insisted. “Oh. You mean, Dumi. He’s our driver. He’ll wait in the car.” At that moment Madiba got up, requested the helpers place another setting at the table, and went outside to retrieve Dumi. After breakfast, Dumi was driving Peter back to the office. When they were just outside the gates of Mr Mandela’s house, Dumi parked the car, got out, walked over to Peter’s window, knelt down and said, “Peter, thank you 36

for asking Mr Mandela to come and invite me in for breakfast. This is something I never expected could ever happen in my life. I simply don’t know how to thank you enough for what you have done.” “…Uh, please don’t mention it Dumi,” interrupted Peter with a wave of his hand, “It was the least I could do. I’m glad you enjoyed the occasion.” As Peter said these words he felt silly for lying, and later even more ashamed. A few days later he told Dumi the truth. Seeds take root and grow, not only because we planted them, but because we allowed people, and the mysteries of the universe to support us with nutrients, water, air, ploughing, sun… they hear us, and respond with fruits from our labour and our faith.

AS LONG AS YOU AND YOUR TEAM KEEP MOVING FORWARD, IT DOESN’T MATTER IF YOU FAIL, IN FACT, FAILURE IS PART OF THE PROCESS TOWARDS SUCCESS. Allow others to plant goodness with you, to help plough and water and bring sunshine into your garden. Don’t go it alone. Allow others to share their vision, their purpose, their hope with you that you may have a harvest of everything under the sun for yourself, your family, your friends, your community, this planet… for generations to come. Madiba understood better than anyone, that in order for human beings to reach their full potential, no soldier could be left behind. He welcomed challenges. Madiba understood the power of working as a collective to overcome challenges, and he always shared the victory with the entire team, not just those with titles. We all have challenges. The opportunity is to share the load on the road, not to sit back indoors and let it weigh us down. Get up, get out, find likeminded troops on your journey to success and be… Better Together!”

f there were a way to double your chances for fitness success, would you be interested? How about a technique to make exercise more fun? A tool that automatically creates space and time in your busy schedule for workouts? A proven way to help you out of a rut or through a plateau? It may all sound too good to be true, but countless fitness seekers have found that the right workout group can do all that and more. “Training with a group of like-minded people encourages us to work harder and commit longer to a point where it becomes a lifestyle. The friends you make in the gym will miss you when you are not there,” says Fit Pit’s Coach Schalk. “The instructor also keeps you motivated and ensures your goals get met, where when we train on our own we might not train as hard, not complete or even skip the session completely and rather have a smoothie at the health bar instead.” Recent studies have found proof that the exercise habits of people you know have a positive influence on your exercise habits and that couples who worked out separately had a 43 per cent dropout rate over the course of a year. of whether they focused on the same type of exercise, had only a 6.3 per cent dropout rate. The need for interpersonal support is primal, says Coach Schalk. “We are social animals. We seek the company and positive reinforcement of others, especially when we are doing work.” According to Coach Schalk, group classes are ideal for people who like to combine social time with exercise or for people who simply like the interaction of a group. Whether you’re jogging shoulder-to-shoulder with buddies

or simply glancing across the fitness floor at familiar faces, there’s a strong motivation in the feeling that “we’re all in this together,” Coach Schalk says. “A group normalizes the need to maintain effective health-and-fitness behaviour and promotes a feeling of community.” If you’re feeling challenged or losing steam during a workout, you can look around and find a bit of empathy or encouragement from your peers to pull you through. “The group provides a vehicle for support, for problem solving, or to gently confront and hold one another accountable if an individual is straying from the goals,” he says. Slow down when eating and chew your food well. The faster you eat, the more you eat, resulting in digestive discomfort. Needless to say, your waistline may not thank you either.

Increase your daily fibre intake incrementally by eating fibre rich foods.

06 07

Eat a balanced, varied diet including grains, fruits and vegetables.

Skip the bad habits: Smoking, excessive caffeine and alcohol. These can interfere with your digestive system, leading to problems like heartburn and ulcers.

08 09 Stress less. Get into a routine – this ensures you’re concentrating on what you’re eating, when and how.

Enjoy Probiotics daily to maintain an optimal balance of good gut bacteria. Stay hydrated – with any increase in fibre ensure an increase in fluid intake.

05

Exercise regularly.

10

Portion with caution – no matter how healthy the meal, eating too much consistently is never a good idea.

HAVE A CUPPA

Tea, especially herbal tea, is packed with antioxidants that hydrate your body and help to flush out toxins. Tea fills you up, making you less likely to overindulge or overeat, and the antioxidants in tea will also give your metabolism a boost. Tea boosts your immune system too, helping you to fight off colds, flu and infections. Some teas contain caffeine so it’s a good pick-me-up when you need it. Tea’s caffeine is different to coffee, it’s gentler on the system so you’ll get the benefits without the jitters.

1

START WITH WATER

Start your day, meals, even your bath or shower with a glass of water and it won’t be long before you notice how good it makes you feel. A tall glass of (not too cold) water with the juice of half a lemon squeezed into it will rehydrate your system and promote digestion, which will naturally help your body to eliminate waste. Drinking water within half an hour of waking up will give you more energy for the day, boost your immunity and metabolism and help fight fatigue. Drinking a glass of water before each meal improves digestion and makes you feel fuller faster.

2

BETTER YOUR BREATHING

Pollution and allergens are all around you, in the air you breathe and everything you touch. Allergens in the air can trigger symptoms such as red, puffy eyes and a stuffy nose. Flush your nasal passages with a Neti Pot regularly to combat the side effects of pollutants and clear your airways. Doing so before bed means you will breathe better in your sleep, allowing your body to reap all the benefits of a good night’s rest. Try not to have the aircon on all day or take a five minute walk outside in fresh air to reduce your exposure to irritants in the air. It should go without saying that quitting smoking will have a huge impact on your health. 60

4

BRUSH IT OFF

When it comes to detoxification, skin is one of our most important organs. Your skin is busy all the time, protecting your body, keeping everything harmful on the outside and not allowing anything in. Skin brushing and massaging can help exfoliate toxins from your skin and improve your circulation. Exfoliating helps to unclog pores and allows your body to sweat freely, one of the ways to get rid of toxins.

Health

5

CUT THE CANDY

One of the fastest ways to improve your overall health is to decrease the amount of sugar in your diet. Consuming sugar forces your body to make more insulin which strains your pancreas and leaves you feeling worn out. In the long term, this can cause diabetes or cancer, you will become overweight and it will leave you feeling chronically fatigued. Cutting out sugar is difficult because your body will crave it and you might experience sugar withdrawals such as headaches, mood swings and even the shakes while your body detoxes, but once you are through it you will feel better than ever!

6

MOVE, MOVE, MOVE!

The benefits of exercising regularly are not unknown to us. Everyone knows that exercising is one of the best ways to feel healthy, have more energy, lose weight and feel good about yourself. All of these benefits are thanks to all the detoxing effects that exercise has on our body. Exercise makes you sweat, ridding your body of toxins through your skin; it improves your blood circulation, allowing oxygen to move more freely through your body and it encourages circulation in the lymph system which helps with lymphatic drainage. Exercise enhances digestion, reduces tension, lubricates your joints and strengthens your body. People who exercise regularly have far fewer toxins in their system, have more energy and, studies have shown, are in general happier people than those who don’t exercise.

7

EAT IN COLOUR

A colourful variety of fruits and veggies should be the main focus of your diet, along with whole grains, beans and legumes and a small amount of nuts and seeds. Different fruits and vegetables are a very good source of a variety of vitamins and nutrients. Increasing your intake of natural, raw veggies and fruits decreases your risk of cancer, diabetes and other diseases. Fruits and veggies also contain a lot of natural fibre which acts as nature’s broom, sweeping out your digestive system and helping your body flush unwanted toxins. 62

8

WORK UP A SWEAT

There is nothing more detoxing than sweating it out in the sauna. When you’re sweating, you recognize the fact that your body is working hard and this releases the endorphins associated with exercise. Most detoxing happens through the liver and kidneys, but when the amount exceeds the capacity the body can handle, your pores will start to pitch in. Multiple studies have shown heavy metals like arsenic, lead and mercury in people’s sweat after exercise or a sauna session. Your pores are a two-way street though, so remember to shower and wash with soap afterwards to clean your skin, otherwise your body will reabsorb the toxins you have just sweated out.

T

here are new makeup and skincare products being launched all the time and as much as you would love to try them all, this can be a daunting – and expensive – process if you are not sure where these new products fit into your existing beauty regimen. There are so many products available, it can be overwhelming. But applying the correct products in the correct way can go a long way in helping you looking your absolute best.

MOISTURIZER

As always, it’s a good idea to choose a moisturizer with an SPF so that you don’t have to apply your daily sun protection after you moisturize. A separate eye cream is also worthwhile, since they're made specifically for the delicate eye area. Eye cream should be applied before you put on your face moisturizer. Put it on right: Don’t just dip your dirty finger into your cream. For hygiene purposes, use a clean cotton swab to scoop out a five cent coin-sized amount. Warm it up in your hands, press it into your face and then massage it in for 30 seconds. Don’t forget your neck and the tips of your earlobes (earrings make them dry).

PRIMER

A primer is what sets you up for makeup success. It creates a beautiful canvas and makes your foundation last longer. Even if you don’t use foundation, primer softens the appearance of your skin and helps concealer to stay put. If primer makes you feel as though you’ve got too much on your face already, opt for a BB or CC cream instead of a primer or foundation.

Put it on right: Warm up a twenty cent coin-sized amount and then massage it into the face. Cover your entire face with it and bring it down the neck to soften the appearance of the skin.

FOUNDATION

If you want a lighter coverage, try a tinted moisturizer instead of a fullcoverage foundation. Experts advise having two foundations in your make up kit; an everyday, go-to foundation and something a bit heavier for special events. Match your foundation to your neck or jaw line so that you don’t end up with a lighter head and darker body or vice versa. Put it on right: Don’t do the dot-dot-dot and start blending, because by the time you get to the last dot, it’s a little dry and difficult to blend. Instead, squirt some on to your hand, warm it up and then blend it in using your fingers or a sponge. Then, using the dry side of the sponge, buff it into your face.

CONCEALER

Some women skip foundation and go straight to concealer. Other women don’t bother with concealer if they use foundation. No matter what you used before, concealer covers broken capillaries, dark circles and blemishes. You don’t always have to conceal your entire eye area – target your concealer to the inner eye instead of spreading it all over. Put it on right: Get two shades of concealer—a lighter one and a darker one—and blend them together on the back of your hand with a brush to get a custom camouflage colour. Test the shade on your chin first. When you’re satisfied with the shade, gently brush a bit of concealer onto the area where you need it and then press it in with your finger. Continue until the area is covered.

POWDER

Face powder sets your foundation and prevents your skin from getting too oily or shiny. Plus, it makes your face look smoother and helps to minimize any small imperfections. Put it On Right: Professional makeup artists prefer a puff over a powder brush.

71

Style Fold it like a taco, tap off excess, and press and roll it into the skin. This way, you set your foundation without leaving any residue behind. If you prefer to use cream blush or highlighter, apply it before you put on powder. Otherwise, you risk the blush ‘pilling up’.

EYE SHADOW

For all-day staying power, blend a bit of eye shadow primer onto your lid. For even longer staying power, opt for a cream shadow over a powder. When choosing colours, remember that dark shades recede (best for the crease) and light shades make things come forward (best for the lid and orbital bone).

Apply it and then smudge it with a brush to blur the line. Try to avoid lining the waterline (the inside of your eye) as it can cause an eye infection.

MASCARA

Curl your lashes first and do it in three stages: the base first, then the midsection of the lash. Finish off by getting the little baby lashes on the outside. These tiny lashes are the unsung heroes and can really make your eyes pop. Change out your mascara every three months so that it’s fresh and doesn’t leave your lashes dry-looking and clumpy. Put it on right: Go for one or two coats. Start at the base of your lashes and wiggle the wand a bit as you pull it up and out through the lashes. Use a light circular motion on baby lashes. Then, wipe off the wand and barely touch the bottom lashes.

BLUSH

Blush makes your complexion look radiant and alive. It’s not hard to put on but the secret is to not overdo it. It’s simple to add more, but it’s more difficult to try to dial it back once it’s on.

Put it on right: Blend a cream formula in with your finger, making sure that the colour diffuses as you get to the outer edges of your eyes. If you’re using a powder, be sure to use a brush and not the applicator sponge. Start in the centre of the lid and brush the colour out to the left and then to the right – you want the colour to be concentrated in the centre and then blend it out. Then start blending a lighter colour up so you don’t see where it starts and stops.

LINER

Liner can increase the volume of your lashes by tenfold but avoid the cat-eye look and other high-graphic looks for everyday wear. Put it on right: Line your upper lash line by aiming for the roots of your lashes. 72

2017 • MY RACE MAGAZINE

Put it on right: No matter what you see on Instagram pics of your friends, do not go old school and brush blush all the way up your cheekbone, using it as a contour device. Apply powder blush only to the apple of the cheek so it looks like a flush. If you need more colour, opt for cream cheek blush or a cheek stick, which you can even layer on top of the powder blush.

LIPS

Lip colour is a great way express yourself so be adventurous with it. Put it on right: Lining and then filling in your lips with a pencil can help your lipstick stick. But it’s a personal choice that you can certainly skip. When applying lipstick, use a brush, dab some in the middle of your bottom lip and then roll your lips together to distribute it. Then come back and add a bit more to the outer edges. For a high-shine look, add a dab of gloss or Vaseline over the colour.

Babylights THE ULTIMATE NATURAL LOOK By Follicle Hair Atelier

THE LATEST NEW HAIR COLOURING TECHNIQUE THAT’S TAKING THE WORLD BY STORM!

B

abylights are super delicate highlights created using very fine and small sections of hair. This is the newest trend to be added to the on-going list of highlighting techniques like splashlights, balayage, ombre and sombre, but this one differs dramatically from the rest. This technique mimics the subtle, multi-dimensional colour seen in children’s hair. The application process is very similar to that of the usual highlights. The difference when trying to achieve the babylights look is the amount of hair in each foil and the separation between them. For babylights, very small sections of hair are used with small separations between foils so the highlights blend in perfectly with the base colour. Babylights can be applied to any hair colour or type. The beauty of this hair colouring technique is that you can play with so many colours from very blond to rich and creamy caramel and toffee tones. It all depends on your skin tone, as well as your preferences and preferred maintenance level. The babylights technique is a very low maintenance method for hair colour in

the sense that when it grows out the look becomes even softer and because the ‘lites’ are done so fine, there is little to no regrowth line. To maintain healthy hair and preserve your colour it is important to use quality home care products suitable for treatments done on your hair in a salon. Brands like Kevin Murphy, Joico and Hannon offer a wide variety of products to suit the needs of every hair type. A thicker, more moisturizing conditioner in winter is always a great place to start and will also help get rid of the static in your hair. To create the illusion of blonder, lighter hair a purple based shampoo is fantastic as it eliminates unwanted warm tones and pigments. If you would like to try the babylights technique on your hair, or if you are looking for advice on the best salon quality products, visit Follicle Hair Atelier at Waterkloof Corner or Hazeldean square. YOU WILL NEED:

A ROUND MIRROR: We used a 35cm mirror for this project. You can use a smaller or larger mirror depending on your preference. The smaller you go, the more ‘burst’ effect you will have but you may find that a larger mirror is more practical. PLASTIC SHEET(S): We used old plastic placemats but old binder covers, or chopping mats will work too. METALLIC SPRAY PAINT: Use which ever shade will match your home best. Most craft and DIY shops offer a range of silver, gold, copper and even rose gold shades. HEAVY DUTY GLUE: We chose to use a quick drying, heavy duty, all-purpose permanent adhesive. Take note that hot glue won’t work well for this project because it doesn’t bond well to smooth surfaces like plastic and glass. HEAVY DUTY SCISSORS: Kitchen shears will work just as well.

Step 1:

CUT YOUR PLASTIC SHEETS INTO STRIPS.

You will need to make 16 large outer “petals” for the mirror. Start by cutting 16 long strips about 6mm wide by 33cm long (the length of the average plastic sheet). You will also need to cut 16 smaller inner “petals” that go inside the large petals. These should be 6mm wide and about 25cm long. If you would prefer a different size, have purchased a larger or smaller mirror than we used, or if you simply want to make sure of the size, play around with one or two test petals to see how long you’d like yours to be and how many petals you need to make to fit your mirror.

Step 2:

Step 3:

Once your strips are cut, begin making petals by putting a dot of glue at the ends of one strip and pinching those ends together. Depending on the glue you are using, we advise holding the ends together for a minute or two.

Make your inner petals the same way and then complete a petal by putting a dot of glue at the inner base of the large petal and attaching the smaller petal to that spot. One petal will look the one in the picture above.

MAKE YOUR OUTER PETALS.

MAKE THE INNER PETALS AND ASSEMBLE THE TWO.

Time

Step 4: ADD THE PETALS TO YOUR MIRROR.

Once all your petals are made, line them up around the mirror the way you’d like. Once you are happy with the layout, begin gluing the edges of each petal together to create a ring of petals. Do not glue the petals to the mirror yet as you still need to paint them first.

Step 5:

Step 6:

Before attaching the ring of petals to your mirror, spray paint them your desired colour. If you have never used spray paint before, try searching for a handy instructional video on this on YouTube or Pinterest.

Once your paint is dry, carefully attach the petal frame to the front edges of your mirror by placing small dots of glue to the backside at the base of each petal.

PAINT THE PETALS.

Step 7:

FIND THE PERFECT PLACE FOR YOUR MIRROR. Let the glue dry and then hang it on your wall and enjoy it! If your mirror doesn’t have a hanging hook on the back of it, you can use a plate holder to hang your mirror on the wall.
