WE AS WOMAN struggle with so many challenges in our lives. We fight the fight of accepting our bodies every day, we struggle with hormonal imbalances to top it all, we have little or no knowledge on what to eat or how to train to get into shape and our self-image and self-confidence is the last thing we focus on. Why is it that our needs always come last and we focus so much on other people? What we don’t realise is that you need to fill your emotional, physical and spiritual tank first before you can fully care for others. We as woman have been blessed with the potential to do anything and make a success of it but we are constantly being challenged by our negative thoughts and emotions. We always compare ourselves to others and see the good in them but when it comes to ourselves we can name 10 things that we don’t like about ourselves and only maybe 2 things that we do. This thought process has to change. You need to realise that you are ‘fearfully and beautifully made’. As soon as you get up in the morning take 5 minutes and write down all the things you are thankful for. Write down all the beautiful things about yourself, even though it might sometimes be difficult to find those qualities, they are there, I promise you. Dig deep into your soul, write it down every day and realise your beauty. After discovering how beautiful you are, you would want to look and care after yourself. It is my passion to help and inspire woman on all these different levels. I want each lady to realise her true beauty and to live a healthy, self-confident and fulfilled life. Out of the desire to inspire and help woman change from the inside out, the Re Do You Ladies conference was born and I truly believe and live by the following statement: If you can dream it; you can become it. If you can imagine it; you can achieve it.

Food enthusiasts can look forward to completely new Miele steam oven models and a unique method of generating and delivering steam. Miele steam ovens still operate on the principle of generating steam outside the inner cabinet. This offers practical benefits – there are no lime deposits in the cabinet and cooking times are independent of the quantity of food being cooked. This principle has now been optimised for the new models. Miele steam ovens generate the steam in a number of different ways – these include MultiSteam, which admits steam trough eight inlet ports to shorten heatup cycles and distribute steam evenly; and MonoSteam in which steam is produced by boiling water in a tank, and then admitted to the cabinet through a single port ideal for smaller models. There are many health benefits to cooking with steam, including optimum retention of vitamins, nutrients, flavour, colour and texture. Combination steam cookers represent the pinnacle of modern cooking appliances, as they combine a steam cooker and a wall oven in one single appliance.

Ways to Relieve Stress by

GARDENING IS A POPULAR HOBBY THAT DOUBLES AS AN OUTSTANDING STRESS RELIEVER. RECENTLY, I ASKED THREE EXPERTS FOR ADVICE ON MAXIMIZING THE STRESS-BUSTING POTENTIAL OF GARDENING. HERE’S WHAT THEY TOLD ME ABOUT HOW TO CULTIVATE CALMNESS ALONG WITH THE TULIPS OR TOMATOES. By Linda Wasmer Andrews

01

Keep it a hobby, not a chore

02

Make friends with nature

03

Leave your phone inside

Just as with golfing or yoga, some people enjoy gardening and others don’t. Even if you’re in the former group, however, it’s important to ask yourself whether you like it a little or a lot, and then plan the size and maintenance requirements of your garden accordingly. “Be realistic about how much time and energy you have for gardening,” says Anna Ranieri, PhD, MBA, a psychotherapist and career coach. She notes that planting a thousand square metres when all you really want to do is deadhead a few geraniums may lead to more stress, not less.

“A garden is a place where we can slow down and reconnect with the natural world the way our ancestors did all day, every day,” says Kristen K. Brown, author of The Happy Hour Effect: 12 Secrets to Minimize Stress and Maximize Life. Research has shown that spending time in nature can help restore your attention, relax your body, and revive your mood.

Don’t let phone calls, texts, emails, and social media intrude on your gardening time. “So many days are filled with multitasking from dawn to dusk,” says Ranieri. “Make this a time when you have only one thing to do, and immerse yourself in the experience.”

live balanced

04

Be mindful of the moment

05

Repeat a garden mantra

A garden offers a feast for the senses: verdant leaves, aromatic blossoms, chirping birds, squishy earth. Make a deliberate choice to soak it all up. “Be aware of what’s happening right here and now—what’s in front of your eyes and at the touch of your fingertips— rather than what’s in the report you have to write tomorrow,” says Ranieri. By becoming fully absorbed in the moment-to-moment experience, you’re practicing mindfulness, a proven way of reducing stress.

www.salivelife.co.za

15

“There’s this lovely cadence you can get into when weeding,” says Landscape Architect, Annie Kirk. The same can be said of digging, raking, and many other garden and lawn care activities. Kirk says that some of her clients pair the repetitive movement with a repeated mantra or prayer. Others combine it with yoga breathing exercises. Either strategy can activate the parasympathetic nervous system—the body system that counteracts the physiological changes brought on by stress.

ISSUE 9 2014

live balanced

06

Cultivate your creativity

“Is your garden wild and woolly, or is it precise and elegant? Does it use your signature colours? We all need to express ourselves creatively, and gardening is one way to do that,” says Ranieri. So get imaginative with a palette of plants. Research shows that engaging in a creative pastime can be an effective stress control strategy.

ISSUE 9 2014

16

www.salivelife.co.za

07

Connect with neighbours

Although many people savour peace and quiet while gardening, others appreciate company. If you’re working in your front yard, it’s natural for neighbours to wave hello or stop and chat about the weather. “It’s an opportunity for social connectedness,” says Kirk.

08

Welcome wildlife visitors

You can invite birds, butterflies, and other wildlife visitors into your garden as

well. The National Zoological Gardens website (www.nzg.ac.za) offers detailed tips on what to plant and how to provide a safe and friendly habitat for the birds, insects, and other animals you want to attract. Their presence adds another dimension to help captivate your attention and enrich your experience.

09

Revel in a job well done

“Gardening gives you a sense of accomplishment,” says Brown. “It can lead to great satisfaction when those first blooms of spring emerge from the autumnplanted bulbs you weren’t sure would grow or when the first ripe tomato is ready for picking.” The beauty you add to your home or the fresh food you put on your table is tangible proof of time well spent.

Trauma in South Africa

Debriefing the Whole Family

live balanced

Unfortunately, you don’t have to scrutinize statistics to be aware of the high crime rate and the prevalence of serious and fatal motor vehicle accidents in South Africa. Our roads aren’t safe, our neighbourhoods aren’t safe and we don’t even feel safe in our own homes anymore. Although trauma can be caused by extraordinary events such as violence and molestation, more common events such as divorce and medical procedures and on-going fear and/or stress can also lead to trauma. Counselling can help overcome this trauma and allow the whole family to move forward together. By Jeanne Fourie Hattingh

Recognising Trauma

We can recognise the experience of trauma by being aware of the development of the following symptoms. In children: • Signs of shock: glazed eyes, pale and/or cool and moist skin, rapid and/or shallow breathing, trembling, disorientation. • Regressive behaviour: This refers to behaviour characteristic of a previous and completed developmental stage e.g. sucking thumb, acting baby like, clinging behaviour, separation anxiety and wetting or soiling pants. • Psychosomatic symptoms: Physical symptoms caused by psychological factors. The most common psychosomatic symptoms children present with are tummy aches, nausea, sleep disturbances and headaches. • Concentration problems with subsequent dropping of school marks. • Nightmares and dreams about an event. • Becoming withdrawn and/or aggressive behaviour. • Becoming more fearful and the development of phobias.

In adolescents and adults: • Avoidant behaviour: Avoiding situations, people and places associated with the event. • Commencing or increased use of substances in order to relax, numb or forget. • Change in mood and behavioural patterns e.g. increased irritability, anxiety, depression, aggression and isolation or becoming more social in order to mask other symptoms. • Feeling tense, uneasy and unwell. • Startling easily. • Changes in sleeping and eating patterns. • Physical symptoms of anxiety e.g. heart palpitations and trembling or other psychosomatic disorders. • Changes in close relationships e.g. problems with intimacy. • Reliving the event through dreams or intrusive thoughts. • Becoming paranoid or hyper-aroused. All of the above symptoms are normal reactions to an abnormal or traumatic event and are referred to as acute stress. When symptoms last longer than four weeks, the possibility of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) should be explored.

What to Do

Previously, it was thought that trauma is best resolved by talking therapy. The latest research however, suggests that since trauma is experienced in the body through the nervous system and the reptilian brain, the best way to deal with it is on a bodily or somatic level. It has even been suggested

ISSUE 9 2014

Peter Levine and Maggie Kline describe trauma as being the opposite of empowerment. Trauma happens when an individual experiences a feeling of being overwhelmed and of helplessness. Although we experience feelings when traumatised, trauma is located in the nervous system. When we are faced with a threatening situation, we do not ‘feel threatened’ per se, but we experience an instinctual reaction in the primitive or reptilian brain preparing the body to fight or flee. This reaction is commonly known as the ‘fight or flight’ response. This is characterised by tightening of the muscles, increased blood flow, a surge of energy, and dilated pupils. When the fear is overwhelming or on-going and when one is unable to fight back or run away, the body reacts by collapsing or freezing. Children and the elderly are more at risk to move into a freeze response because they are physically and mentally more vulnerable and less able to defend themselves. Something we don’t always realise is that we can develop ‘secondary trauma’. Secondary trauma refers to the experience of trauma in a situation where the person himself was not under threat. This may happen when someone stands witness

• Re-enacting the event through play or drawing pictures of the event. • Avoiding situations, places or people associated with the event.

19

The Person’s Experience of the Event

to an event. We should remember that we don’t always have to be a direct witness, but we ‘experience’ possible traumatic events on a daily basis by watching television, reading the newspaper and in our interpersonal contact with people. Our children are especially vulnerable to secondary trauma and we are often unaware of their traumatic experiences. In South Africa where there is a high incidence of violence against children, our children can perceive life as dangerous and uncertain, even where there is no immediate or direct threat to them.

www.salivelife.co.za

THE AMERICAN SUBSTANCE Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration defines trauma as follows: “Individual trauma results from an event, series of events, or set of circumstances that is experienced by an individual as physically or emotionally harmful or threatening and that has lasting adverse effects on the individual's functioning and physical, social, emotional, or spiritual well-being”. Trauma is not in the event itself, but in the person’s experience of the event.

that traditional talk therapy can lead to re-traumatisation. Dr. Peter Levine developed a strategy to prevent and heal trauma. He offers certain steps in helping individuals deal with trauma. With children: • The most important thing to remember when dealing with a child after a frightful or traumatic event is to be calm and composed. Children look at adults to help them determine how bad a situation is – remember: trauma is not in the event itself but in our experience of the event. When you are calm, you can minimise the impact of the event on the child. Offer comfort by saying reassuring things like “you are safe now, it is all over now” etc. • Since the reptilian brain does not recognize words, we also work with trauma on the level of sensations. If it is immediately following the event, keep the child still for a while. Help the child to identify sensations by asking questions about how he is feeling in his body. If the child names a specific sensation, ask about the size, location, shape etc. If the child does not offer anything, ask him to point or touch a part of his body where he feels sore, uncomfortable, scared etc. • Take it slow. The child needs time to complete processes, experience sensations and integrate experiences. • Validate the child’s physical response. If they are crying, trembling or even vomiting, allow it to happen. Reassure them of your support and identify the physical response, for example, by saying: “I can see you are shivering – that is good. Shake the hurt right out of you”. Resist interrupting the process by saying something to the likes of “everything is okay, you can stop crying now”. • Allow the body to do what it needs to

do. This you can do by being there, but allowing the child to sit in a position he prefers, to not distract his attention and following his cues. A process is usually complete when the child starts to orientate himself to the world around him again by looking around and starting to move away from you. • Encourage rest. The event is processed during rest and sleep. • Later, when the child is ready, they will play the event out, start talking about it or refer to it in another way. Then you can ask questions about the event, help them to identify feelings such as shame, guilt, fear and sadness and assure them that those feelings are normal and okay. Answer their questions with honesty, but also offering comfort and support e.g. “it is all over now, you are here now” etc. • Seek professional help from a qualified trauma counsellor or registered psychologist when you feel concerned about the child’s wellbeing after the event or when you notice any persisting signs of trauma as discussed earlier. With adolescents and adults: • When dealing with adolescents and adults, one can follow the same principles as with children. Adolescents and adults can, however, be more challenging in the sense that they have stronger defence mechanisms. They can present with a strong sense of denial for instance. When you hear: ”Oh, it really was nothing”, or “it was not that bad” you should suspect denial. You can overcome this by directing them back to their bodies. “What happened in your body when you realized that the truck was going to hit you?” and then let them expand on that. After the experience of a traumatic event, safety and family support is most

important. Increase the safety measures to create a greater sense of safety. After an armed robbery, get a panic button for each member of the family or have pepper spray in your handbag after being attacked. When we are traumatised, we sometimes forget to ask for and provide support, since we move into survival mode. Be certain to get the family together and tell everyone how much they are loved and that together you can get through this. Give each member of the family a chance to say what is in their hearts. This is true even if only one member of the family was involved in the event. If possible, return to the normal daily routine as soon as possible. The longer the situation or location is avoided, the more anxiety can develop due to the brain still perceiving the situation or place as being threatening. But always remember – safety first. If a child was abused at school, you can under no circumstances send her back to that school as long as the perpetrator is present. And be careful not to overwhelm someone by trying to get him back into his routine. Always follow the cues and pace of the traumatised person. • Childline is a 24-hour service to assist children and teens facing trauma and challenges. Isobel Esterhuyse is a Master Transformation Life Coach, author and co-trainer and has lived a life of positive change using the techniques taught at the NLP Life Coach Training Academy. She has herself been through the process of gradual change and now brings her years of mastery to impart hardearned wisdom to you on how to find your true self and live each day radiant with positivity and inner confidence.

AS A CHILD, AND FOR SOME of us even as a baby, it is very easy to lose our own unique and perfect identity. This happens because our minds are programmed to record and absorb information through all of our senses to give us an idea about ourselves and life. We then create an image about ourselves and adopt beliefs about how good or bad we are. Most of the time this may not be true, but yet we

from Within

accept it to be, and project that “idea” of who we are into the world. Not everyone comes from a loving family and many of us carry unprocessed events from the past where, for example, a teacher, family member or friend has told or perhaps done things to us that completely destroyed our self-worth and image. These ideas that we have accepted about ourselves and life then project onto our relationships, career, success, health and finances. We need to literally re-program ourselves and let go of the hurt, sadness and guilt we carry with us. Our emotions are actually there to serve us, and if you are constantly depressed, sad, angry or negative it means that you are mentally programmed that way. Your upbringing, experiences, values, beliefs and culture have made you see yourself and life in an unwanted way. Most of the time this programming results in a very low self-esteem! Usually, when I ask someone to mentally bring up the image and feelings they have about themselves they bring up a very negative and unwanted picture. Our mind stores all of our information in mental pictures and if you believe that you are not good enough, the image will be poor and

worthless. This is why it is important for women to identify their self-image so that they can change it. I believe that we have to stop and become aware of what we think and feel everyday – it is a vital indicator to tell us if we are living a purposeful life. We all want to experience joy and fulfilment on a daily basis but life has conditioned us to focus on survival and unrealistic expectations of what is good, beautiful, joyful and successful. Whether it lies in great things like traveling, walking, reading or in junk food, alcohol and smoking, we are always either seeking joy or avoiding pain! The journey has to start with yourself – to deal with all your unprocessed events from the past, adopt new empowering beliefs, changing your perception about yourself and to let your emotions guide you to a fulfilled you! Our courses and workshops are designed to help you raise your consciousness in order to find more joy, fulfilment, success, health and happiness! BURPEES If you’re looking to drop those extra kg’s. Start doing burpees! The name says it all, but let’s look at the awesome benefits of a burpee before you decide not to do them.

Your personal trainer in every issue!

Starting position: Stand upright with your legs hip distance apart and arms next to your side

Go down into a deep squat position and place your hands firmly on the ground so your body forms a “ball” position. Continue by kicking your legs back so you end up in a push up position, while supporting your bodyweight on your arms.

Burpee benefits 1. Want to burn loads of calories? Do burpees! Burpees will give you an intense fully body workout, they burn a lot of calories and make your body a fat burning machine. They speed up your metabolism throughout the day—meaning you’ll burn more calories all day. 2. Build Strength The burpee is a full body strength training exercise and with just one seemingly simple movement it challenges the muscles in your arms, chest, quads, gluteus, hamstrings, and abs.

Anna Wood runs Go Active Outdoor Fitness. For more information, visit www.go-active.co.za or www.annawood.co.za.

It is important to keep your knees and feet tucked under your chest when in the squat position

Movement:

By Anna Wood

3. No Equipment Needed You can do burpees basically anywhere, so no excuses about not having the correct equipment.

Quick Tip

To finish: Immediately bring your feet back to the squat “ball” position. Then jump from the deep squat position up into the air with your arms above your head. Land back into the starting position and repeat.

Variation:

Make your burpees more challenging by adding in a push up before the squat thrust and/or a tuck jump when you come back up to your feet.

Health Trends 6 Belly Bloat Foods That Fight Off

Bloating – fluid build up between cells in your body – can be caused by poor digestion, too much sodium, or your period. But according to experts, if you pay attention to what you're eating, you can usually avoid it. Water with Lemon: Retaining water is actually your body's way of holding onto fluid so you don't dehydrate. Lemons are a natural diuretic so consuming the liquid can help reduce the amount of salt retained in the body.

Known for its ability to fight pain and inflammation, turmeric is also key in aiding upset stomach and bloat reduction.

Beans and Lentils: Lentils, with their high amount of fibre, are a good choice for aiding digestion. Potassium-rich foods include white beans, soybeans, and lima beans and they are also the highest-fibre vegetables you can get. Beans are naturally high in both oestrogen and protein and can relieve periodinduced bloat. Yogurt: Since a lot of people are sensitive to lactose, it's better to opt for yogurt instead of milk, especially the kind with live active cultures. Yogurt is already pre-digested and the milk sugar is broken down, while in milk it's not, which can create gas and bloating.

Watermelon: All kinds of melons are beneficial to your health, but watermelon is known as one of the juiciest fruits because it is 92% water. It has a natural diuretic property and is a great source of potassium – balancing sodium and potassium is important for controlling bloat.

Wellness

in the Work Place Whilst many of us dream of “spending a day at the Spa”, work-load, deadlines, limited time and budgetary constraints often do not allow for valuable team members to be out of the office for extended periods of time and thus essential wellness can be compromised. NUMEROUS SPA’S INCLUDING MOWANA SPA (Spa Nouvelle Finalist 2014), Healing Hands, Just Haven and Mangwanani African Day Spa, to name a few, have introduced a “Spa on the Move” concept where they are able to bring “WELLNESS TO YOU” by incorporating relaxing Massage Techniques into shorter time periods in the comfort of your office environment. Relaxation Zones are set up in an area of your choice and mini-massages are offered. These can include head, neck and shoulder massages, foot massages and hand massages to target work-stressed muscles to ensure relaxation and an overall sense of well-being. This “Spa on the Move” trend means that wellness and relaxation is accessible to all. Spa Days are also being embraced by forward thinking companies as a team building option with more and more teams preferring the tranquillity of a Spa Pamper to the more traditional Survivor type Teambuilding activities which, if not facilitated correctly, can lead to discord within the team. Wellness in the workplace is no longer an exception, but is fast becoming the norm with many companies and employees benefiting from this trend. As we understand that a 24/7 lifestyle is simply not sustainable and finding “me time”, whether it be a spa pamper, a gym work-out or simply taking a book to the bottom of your garden to indulge, is very important to overall wellness. About CANSA The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is highlighting the importance of screening and early detection during October, as part of their Women’s Health campaign. By making smart lifestyle choices and avoiding known carcinogens such as tobacco and alcohol, you not only improve your overall health, you also reduce your cancer risk.

• Know your family history of breast cancer. • Eat smart and healthy – Be cancersmart when choosing, preparing and enjoying food. Avoid processed foods and include lots of fresh vegetables and fruits in your diet. • Exercise and manage stress – Live a balanced, active lifestyle. Exercise is essential for building immunity and strength. If you’re fit, managing your day to day responsibilities will be less stressful. • Avoid alcohol and tobacco – Limit the use of alcohol or avoid it completely and avoid the use of tobacco products. • Do monthly breast examinations and go for regular clinical breast examinations. Symptom-free women should go for a mammogram at least every three years from the age of 40. • Go for regular Pap smears (a screening test for early diagnosis of cervical cancer), at least every three years from age 25. • Encourage your mother, daughter, sister and female friends to do the same.

For inspirational messages from South African women who have been touched by cancer, purchase a copy of CANSA’s tea table book Sister Warriors or get CANSA’s Life is Beautiful publication that includes information on cancer prevention, as well as tips for cancer survivors. Both books can be ordered through CANSA’s Head Office or toll-free line 0800 22 66 22 or via email: info@cansa.org.za. “SOME PEOPLE HAVE genes that make them more likely to develop breast cancer. The most common gene defects are found in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. These genes normally produce proteins that protect one from cancer. Women with one of the defects have up to an 80% chance of getting breast cancer during her lifetime,” says Michael Herbst, CANSA Head of Health. Women who have a first line relative like a mother, sister or aunt that have been diagnosed with cancer, are generally more predisposed to this type of cancer. CANSA encourages mothers and daughters to get screened regularly – visit one of the CANSA Care Clinics or Centres for more information on screening and treatment of women’s cancers or visit www.cansa.org.za. According to SA Statistics as per the National Cancer Registry, breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among South African women, with 1 in 35 women being diagnosed. Another of the most common cancers is cervical cancer, with 1 in 42 women being diagnosed. Cervical cancer is also the leading cancer among black women in South Africa. “Women need to take good care of themselves. CANSA aims to inspire women to be educated about the cancer risk, to encourage their families to lead a balanced lifestyle, by eating healthy, doing regular exercise and managing stress, avoiding alcohol and tobacco; and going for regular screening, ” Herbst concluded. CANSA has nine Mobile Health Units which travel to remote areas throughout South Africa to reach people who would otherwise not have access to screening. These include breast examinations, Pap

Summer Transformation ANOTHER WINTER HAS passed and now it’s time to shed the layers that have been comfortably covering you up for the past few months. These layers hide a multitude of sins but once summer hits your body has to be ready and this means that you need to find a quick and safe way to get rid of the unwanted fat – and soon. Luckily help is at hand, as the Silhouette Aesthetic Centre presents Vaser Lipo. Vaser Lipo is a safe and effective solution to losing centimetres with minimal pain and downtime. It results in instant centimetre reduction and is fast becoming the first choice for many patients seeking an alternative to liposuction. The procedure is tissue selective, targeting fat yet at the same time protecting other tissues from

damage. It is powerful enough to eliminate substantial areas of fat but gentle enough to treat delicate areas such as the neck and arms. The healing process is quick and the results are astounding. Excess fat in the upper body appearing in areas such as the jowls, chin and breasts or stubborn fat on the lower body presenting in love handles, the stomach, thighs or calves can be persistent in spite of a good diet and substantial weight loss. A drastic weight loss could even result in excess sagging skin in these areas. Worse than that, a too strict, too lengthy or boring diet results in people not losing the weight they are so desperate to be rid of. With Vaser Lipo you see results in a much quicker time frame with the added benefit of tighter skin. Vaser Lipo stimulates new collagen and elastin growth in the skin. This creates better skin function and appearance which actually further improves over time. This means that patients presenting with skin that is already in good condition will not have to worry about sagging skin following the successful outcome of their procedure. Results may vary according to the amount of fat removed, the number of areas treated, and other factors. Many

It’s time to unwrap and reveal that summer-ready body – but will you be ready in time? Vaser Lipo has the answer! patients report that they see results immediately after the procedure with the final results around three to four months later. The team of doctors at Silhouette Aesthetic Centre will help you to determine realistic expectations.

Exercising or going to the gym could actually help you to quit that nasty smoking habit and could even become a major contributing factor to keeping you “smoke-free as you feel an improvement in your health through a reduction of depression and anxiety, and experience better sleep patterns, stress management and selfesteem.

For every year of continued smoking after the age of 35 years a person loses 3 months of life expectancy. Smoking just a single cigarette can immediately affect the ability to exercise by constricting blood vessels, which prevents the proper delivery of blood and oxygen to muscles during exercise. Adults experience a 4% decrease in oxygen uptake immediately after smoking. Regular smokers face even greater performance problems and tend to be less physically active and therefore have a reduced performance at all levels of physical training. They also demonstrate smaller improvements in training, and their endurance is compromised (7,2% less than non-smokers). As levels of supervised exercise programs increase smokers become more likely to quit the habit. Smokers have higher resting heart rates and lower maximum heart rates than non-smokers, meaning that their hearts always have to work harder to pump blood throughout the body. In addition, young men and women who smoke are significantly more likely to injure themselves during exercise, will heal slower from their injuries – or some will not heal at all. Although some good athletes smoke, they would be even better if they did not. People who quit smoking demonstrate improved exercise performance compared to those who continue to smoke. Some people unwisely begin or continue smoking as a weight control measure. But the links between smoking and less physical activity and decreased physical performance actually interfere with healthy and effective weight control. Studies show that the body fat of smokers tends to be distributed in a pattern that has adverse health implications. Men who smoke burn fewer calories of energy per day than non-smokers, whilst women who exercise when they quit smoking, delay weight gain – a great reason to stop lighting up!

How does the body react when you stop smoking?

To effectively counteract the effects of aging, skincare products should address the five natural functions of the skin namely revitalisation, hydration, protection, oxygenation and nutrition, simultaneously. cells and prevent future damage. Peptides, another ingredients seen in numerous anti-ageing preparations, are believed to accelerate cellular renewal and impact the depth of wrinkles. Peptides are naturally occurring amino acids which are the building blocks of the protein collagen. Collagen appears in abundance when we are young but as the ageing process starts, it decreases and the skin appears thinner and wrinkles start to show. Laboratory engineered peptides have shown promising results in slowing down the ageing process as it is believed to stimulate the lower layers of skin, prompting it to release collagen and hyaluronic acid, skin healers which freely occur in the skin of a younger person. We know by now that free radical activity within the skin is controlled by anti oxidants. Co-enzyme Q10 is an anti oxidant that naturally occurs within the cells. With the topical application of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), which has both energizing and anti-oxidative effects, it is reported to have a visible effect on the appearance of wrinkles by reducing the depth of the wrinkle. CoQ10 positively influences the age-affected cellular metabolism and therefore combats signs of ageing, starting at the cellular level. Isn’t it wonderful to see where research and technology is going? And all this to merely make us look more youthful and radiant.

possible use of fruit stem cells in order to enhance the longevity of cells in human skin. The apple that they selected is not only rare but has specific qualities where it could be stored for long periods of time without showing the typical ”wrinkling” old apples do. The Mibelle laboratory developed a technology PhytoCellTec based on the unique totipotency of plant cells. Totipotent means that every cell has the ability to regenerate new organs like leaves, stem, fruit or even a whole plant, in other words all plant cells can dedifferentiate and become a stem. Plant stem cells are characterized by two distinctive properties: the ability to create dedifferentiate cell types and the ability to self-renew so that the number of stem cells is maintained. Plant stem cells never age thus totipotent cells are equipped with regenerative powers that orchestrate plant growth and production of new organs throughout life. The protection of human stem cells by the patented active PhytoCellTec Malus Domestica is not only revolutionary but an award winning ingredient which assists greatly by making our own stem cells healthier and longer lasting. But could a stem cell from a plant differentiate into a human cell? Extensive studies from PhytoCellTec and other institutes have shown that while cultured plant stem cells do not actually regenerate new human cells, they do have a strong ability to protect the skin’s existing stem

OVER THE PAST decade research and development in the skincare industry has really moved forward in leaps and bounds with innovative new ingredients, particularly in the area of anti-ageing. Coupled with the advances of biochemistry and the development of technologies, as well as the effective combining of chemistry or biotechnology, the development of active ingredients are now capable of offering very specific solutions. Moisturising actives remain key ingredients in the fight against the signs of ageing as the skin depends on water to keep it soft, supple and resilient. Environmental conditions constantly disturb the natural moisture level of the skin. Daily application of a moisturiser therefore helps to maintain the natural oil and moisture balance by locking moisture into the tissues, offering protection against dehydration. Humectants like aloe vera, seaweed actives and ceramides are often used in skin creams as they attract moisture from the surrounding air to protect against water loss. Apart from moisture loss, regeneration, protection and oxygenation are key factors to consider when fighting the ageing process. Let’s take a look at some of the revolutionary actives that can be found in skincare creams today. One of the most talked about actives must be plant stem cells. The award winning Biochemistry Company Mibelle, in Switzerland, started research into the

When Hope Whispers

By Zoleka Mandela Zoleka Mandela wrote her book When Hope Whispers after she was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 32. In it, she tells about her emotional turmoil immediately after the diagnosis, her initial refusal of cancer treatment and her subsequent journey with the disease. The book also gives an insight into her life before breast cancer – as a child with Grandmother Winnie in Brandfort and later as a rebellious teenager with her mother Zinzi in Johannesburg. Eat Your Way to a

Bikini Body THE BIGGEST misconception people have is that they think they can out train a bad diet; meaning, “I can eat this bad food and work it off later.” Nothing beats a bad diet. To achieve our weight loss goal we have to understand that nutrition makes up 70% of the process and training takes up the other 30%. Our bodies function in a similar way to a power station. If we want the lights to go on, we need to feed it some kind of fuel to kick-start the whole process. This is where food comes in, if we fuel our bodies with the right kind of food at the right intervals and in the right amounts, the lights shine brightly but change that to plates overloaded with sugars and calorie laden food we find ourselves operating on dim. Grasping this fact will help you make better choices when it comes to food. Let’s change the word ‘diet’ to ‘healthy lifestyle’ because a diet is a temporary solution whereas choosing to live a healthy lifestyle is a long term solution which is far more maintainable with lasting results. The question that I get asked most of the time would probably be: “What exercises can I do to get a six pack?” As you are reading this statement you are most likely asking the same question. People think the secret to a six pack is doing a lot of abdominal crunches day in and day out, but you couldn’t be more wrong. Yes, abs are like any other muscle and to create definition you have to train

them as well and give them rest to recover. We all have the infamous six pack but most of the time it is covered by a layer of fat, so you have to get rid of the fat layer first for the muscles to show. So how do we get those ripped abs? It starts in the kitchen. As the old saying goes, “You are what you eat”, and this means that making sure you have the right foods at hand or in the kitchen and eat at the correct intervals is crucial.

11 STEPS TO LOSE BODY FAT AND GET THAT BIKINI BODY: Do not skip breakfast: Having breakfast kick-starts your metabolism.

01

It’s the thing we all struggle with. We want to lose weight but knowing what to eat, when to eat or how much to eat, becomes a daunting task, and for most a stumbling block that curbs any effort towards our weight loss goal. Let’s see if we can find a simpler approach towards effective maintainable weight loss nutrition and achieving that “bikini body” goal. By Anna Wood

Eat 5 to 6 small meals per day: You will increase your energy levels, accelerate muscle growth and speed up your metabolism without storing fat.

02

Consume minimal amounts of Low GI carbohydrates: GI is a ranking of foods based on how quickly they raise blood glucose levels. If the main sources of carbohydrates in your diet are bread and potatoes then rather try sweet potato and brown rice.

03

Drink 2 to 3 litres of water per day: Water is essential for the functioning of our nervous, skeletal, circulatory, digestive and respiratory systems. Drinking water also aids in weight loss by speeding up your metabolism and curbing your appetite.

08

Eat protein with every meal: Getting enough protein helps preserve muscle mass and encourages fat burning while keeping you feeling full.

10

Exercise: Exercise has so many health benefits. Doing regular exercise will tone your muscles and help you get to your weight loss goals a lot faster.

Swap a cup of rice for a cup of vegetables: You can save from 100 to 200 calories if you reduce the portion of starch on your plate and increase the amount of vegetables which also include beneficial minerals and vitamins.

Enter a race like 10km run/ walk: Entering the SPAR Women’s Challenge will help you to set a goal and work towards it. Your focus will change from weight loss to getting fit and healthy. And then miraculously the weight will also disappear.

Only eat one cheat meal, once a week: It doesn’t help that you control your calories during the week and completely overindulge over weekends. Stick to one cheat meal during the week. But don’t overdo it!

11

Include good fats in your diet: Not all fats are bad for you, nor will all fats cause weight gain. In fact, there are good fats that your body requires to function and even to lose weight. Avocados, raw nuts, salmon, olive oil etc, are all examples of foods containing good fats to include in your diet.

06

Stock your kitchen with healthy food: If there are chocolates and chips in your kitchen, they will be calling your name. If there is healthy convenient food to snack on, you have no choice but to go for a healthy option such as apples or berries.

07

Remember, you have this one body that was given to you to look after. You will not be getting another one, so why not make a decision today and realise how precious you are and look after yourself.

Become Major Victories!

The One Small Victory campaign, created by Novo Nordisk, increased awareness around diabetes and good health management during diabetes month. It made me realise how so often we set ourselves up for failure by trying to change too many things all at once. Especially at the start of a new season when all you can think about is losing the extra weight from your Winter indulgences! Usually at the onset of Summer, you want to diet, drink copious amounts of water, cut out carbs, avoid alcohol and gym every day. Phew, you’ll be exhausted before spring is over! HOW ABOUT you approach your health and weight loss regime a little differently for Summer 2014? Instead of taking the all-or-nothing extreme diet approach, let’s perpetuate the ‘one small victory’ campaign and aim for small, consistent daily wins. Because one daily win, anytime, is a win for good health. Going for a brisk lunch time walk, saying no to office cake, doing some push-ups, taking the stairs, having a smart snack – whatever your healthy action is, it is one small victory to celebrate. We’re about to leave the last vestiages of Winter behind which offers the perfect opportunity for a fresh start. Fresh starts and new lifestyle resolutions are fantastic – if we manage to stick to them. No matter your goal, the biggest challenge lies in creating new habits that support your resolution. The main reason people fail at creating and sticking to new habits is that they don’t keep doing it. This seems obvious: if you don’t keep on doing something, it won’t really become a habit. So what’s the solution to this obvious problem? Find a way of continuing the behaviour until it becomes a habit. The key to forming a habit is not how much of your new behaviour you do each day, but whether or not you do it at all. The key is to just get started. What do I mean by starting? If you want to form the habit of eating breakfast, just get yourself into the kitchen for a few minutes every morning. If you want to form the habit of running, just lace up your shoes and get out the door. If you want to form the habit of drinking more water, just grab a jug or glass and start sipping. Form the habit of starting, and you’ll get good at forming habits. It took me many starts and frustrations before I learned how to live a healthier lifestyle. When I finished high school, I was more than 10 kilograms overweight and didn’t enjoy exercise. Today, I am leaner and fitter. I eat healthily most of the time (with regular indulgences) and I’m able to stick to a regular exercise routine. How did I change? One of the simple strategies I learnt on my journey was the power of ritual and running routines. If you look at the lives of massively productive people like professional athletes or successful business owners, you’ll discover they follow strict daily routines. They have set times when they get up, when they start work, when they eat and exercise and even when they relax! Although yours needn’t be as rigid, create a daily routine to optimise your time. Peak productivity and health is not about luck. It's about devotion. The Greatness Guru, Robin Sharma hit the nail on the head when he said, “Your daily behaviour reveals your deepest beliefs.” Consistent daily starts make for wins which make a big difference to your health, and will help you lose weight effortlessly and sustainably. Not much unlike compound interest. A small amount over a period of time adds up to significant rewards. Just imagine, a daily win over 2014 would create 365 positive proactive steps to changing your lifestyle choices. Now that’s significant interest!
