All BLACK LIVES MATTER.

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR MEMBERSHIP,ESPECIALLY WITH MANY SCHOOLS SWITCHING TO ONLINE CLASSES?

Mikyla Jones Ever since the COVID pandemic hit the United States, simple things like going to school, work, and even the grocery store have now become dangerous. To combat this, schools and businesses had to shut down, and many are just now starting to reopen. Even though things are starting to get back to normal, there are still many safety measures schools have implemented to protect both the students and the faculty. One example of this is giving students the option of in-person or virtual learning for the semester. While it is important to maintain the safety of the students, these safety measures create many difficulties for Key Club in trying tho recruit new members. As we cannot threaten the safety of the incoming students, we must use creative methods to obtain new members. Frontier high school Key Club plans to do this by holding virtual meetings before school in-person school starts. Last Friday, Frontier high school held a recruitment meeting that was open to any incoming Frontier students interested in joining Key Club. We posted the flyer with the date and time on our Key Club's Instagram account, and let others know about the meeting during our online classes. We also plan on holding another Key Club meeting within the first week of physical school. By doing this, we will hopefully reach potential members before other clubs do. By the time we reach the second semester, the COVID rate will hopefully have dripped, and there will be no need for virtual learning. If that happens, we plan on requesting the incoming student who we were unable to recruit because they were in online learning. These are just some of the ways we plan on obtaining new members. While COVID is making things more challenging this year, we don't plan on letting it stop us from having a successful year.

CORONA: THE IMPACT ON MY LIFE AND KEY CLUB Opeoluwa Oyeyemi

Corona has been a huge problem for many individuals around the world. It was so sudden, and no one expected it to spread so fast. (Or at all.) School was abruptly closed, and we were all stuck at home. For most teenagers, at that time, thought that we could just have fun at home and hang out with friends. But when it hit the fourth week and online school had to take place, we all knew ‘vacation’ was over. I for one, surprisingly wasn’t too affected. Frankly this summer was supposed to be three months of volunteering at the hospital with friends and studying for SAT and ACT. At this point in time, I’ve had to sign up for the SAT and ACT for about three times already. My dad is a frontline worker and sees covid-19 patients daily. It makes me uneasy, but I can’t do anything about it. All the volunteering that I had planned on doing came to a halt and I couldn’t do any activities. Ultimately our health matters more and we need to take care of ourselves by wearing masks, social distancing and washing our hands. It’s all that can be done if we need things to come back to normal.

WITH THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC LIMITING IN-PERSON MEETING, HOW HAVE YOUR CLUBS ADAPTED TO THESE CHANGES?

Joshua Pitts

The Coronavirus has put a huge setback on 2020. If there were no virus we would be in school having our meetings, physically with each other. Because of Corona we usually have Zoom meetings for our key club. We talk about it pretty much the same stuff as we would in a classroom from our pledge, to going over what volunteer opportunities there are. It’s taking us a while to adjust, but we are starting to get more comfortable with each other as a club. We have also been recruiting new people into our club. Although it's a little harder since we’re not in a school full of all the people, we were able to contact some of the incoming freshmen and students of the senior class. Last year I was in Key Club. I was able to go to events like elderly bingo and helping the kids at school. With this pandemic, it has definitely limited us to a few volunteer opportunities. Mostly so far on Sundays, there is a volunteer opportunity at allies of youth to pack supplies that kids would need and ship them off. This is pretty much the only time we can all see each other in person as a club. Thankfully we were not completely shut off from ways to volunteer. We have done a pretty okay job with adapting to these changes and will keep thinking of other ways we can help our community. It will only become our usual for a while until stuff starts to open up again.

WHAT ARE SOME QUARANTINE FRIENDLY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES HAVE YOU OR YOUR CLUBS DONE/PLAN ON DOING Opeoluwa Oyeyemi As you may all know this year is hectic. The Pandemic came to everyone as a surprise and resulted in school closing down and us having to take online classes. Although Key Club as a whole is limited to participate in volunteer opportunities we can still do fundraisers. Mansfield Frontier High School Key Club plans on taking part in the Divisional Project. To be of help, we can either donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, And floss. Advertising this project and also donating money will also be very helpful. FHS Key Club is still going to Allies In Youth, some members in Key Club will not be able to go due to the current pandemic but Allies In Youth is always open every Sunday (it is not open on the first Sunday of every month). Although we are not quite sure if we can do these quarantine friendly volunteer opportunities, there are many volunteer opportunities like being a photo editor , online virtual flute lessons for refugee children, send care packages to deployed female service members, face mask for at-risk students, support deployed service members - virtual opportunities. UNICEF, Children's Miracle Network, March of Dimes, thirst project all of these organizations are nonprofit organizations that are to help people in need around the world. Having meetings every month, I think that will help other key clubbers discuss what other volunteer opportunities we can do in the future. Fundraising in school might be a problem but if the principal / teachers allow us, we'll go around in groups of two and offer snacks. it might be a little bit different from how it's been in the past years given the current situation but we as Key Club members will try our best to raise money for the club and still be able to volunteer.

HOTO Ope Oyeyemi

for me Key Club was really nice. Even though I just joined at the end of my junior year. We had a really nice president and she was always willing to help others. Not to mention she always brought snacks for us to eat and gave out the extras. When I started volunteering I was sceptical about what was going to happen. I first volunteered at an old age home. I came late but everyone was welcoming and it was really fun. My partner and I also made a very friendly connection and we won, we even won a teddy bear. We kept winning and people were saying that we kept cheating. I learnt about how his life was at the old age home and what it was like before. At the end of the day we became friends. The second time I volunteered it was with allies in youth, we had to fold clothes and organize them. The lady that was in charge was really nice. She explained what we had to do, showed us where everything was and she was always happy to help whenever. We also meet other people and that is what makes Key Club so nice. We get to meet new people who are so different from us and what we know and they are really nice people. To me Key Club is like a safe zone where we have friends that are willing to help us and help others. Key club is a place that gives us opportunities to help others. It is also a place where we can make friends while helping our school and community. At Key Club we gain experience and we learn to take the initiative and some of us even learn leadership skills. Depending on the position you sign up for you could learn valuable skills.
