Whyvolunteeringinmycommunityisimportant
By: Kaitlyn FergusonVolunteering within your community is very rewarding, especially for students Students have the opportunity to learn new skills and apply them as well as ease the strain on students’ mental health and well-being. While yes, the community does still benefit, I believe that the benefits are so much more in the end for students.
Some of the new skills students will learn are leadership, teamwork, empathy, and much more. Students will learn how to work with others to complete the task that they are assigned for example, making care packages for those in need. Students can learn how to become a leader and help divide the workload so everyone can work together to finish the task. Everyone can benefit from the chance to gain better teamwork skills. There are many more examples within volunteering where a student can learn leadership and teamwork skills Another skill they can learn is empathy because volunteering can help volunteers see the world from another perspective They can see what others have to go through and how volunteering is helping make a difference They can also work with people from different backgrounds and different stories when volunteering This helps to empower the learning and understanding of others, whether it’s the people who you are volunteering with or the people you are helping
Students tend to gain a loss of stress from things like tests, homework, etc Their schedule may be packed with after-school activities as well. A way to relieve that stress is through volunteering. People who volunteer tend to be happier and stay healthier longer than their peers who don’t volunteer. In the given document, they mention that a study done by the London School of Economics and published in Social Science and Medicine found that people who volunteered more were a lot happier. They compared people who don’t volunteer, people who volunteer once a month, and people who volunteer once a week to see who was happier. The group that volunteers once a month was 7% happier and the group that volunteers once a week was 16% happier than compared to others who don’t volunteer. Also in the document, they mention that Stephanie Watson, of Harvard Women’s Health Watch, says ‘Volunteering delivers mental health benefits by making people feel socially connected and less lonely ’
I don’t think anyone is trying to argue that the community doesn’t receive a benefit from volunteers Without volunteers, many needs in our own town would go unanswered I believe in comparison that the rewards for students outweigh the general community when you factor in the positive mental health and soft skills those who volunteer gain
