Howmuchvolunteeringhelps
By: Samuel KramerPeople always say that volunteering helps the community and those around us, but the extent to which has always been unknown to me Sure you can look at a mission statement and get an idea of what they are doing but until you are shown behind the scenes until you understand exactly the impact you made you'll have no idea how much volunteering, even just a little bit, can help. My volunteer experience at Mission Arlington did just that.
Once I arrived at the Mission I went to the counter and waited in line to be assigned work by the Mission It was only a couple of minutes later when I was told what I had to do, load food stored in the warehouses into the back of a truck so it could be distributed. I started loading the truck and after a few hours of back-breaking labor, the deed was done. I didn't think much of it at the time, after all, what is volunteering for a few hours going to do?
Afterward, I finished my task and headed back to the task assignment center looking for more work This time I was assigned shoe sorting After another hour of sorting shoes I went to get my volunteer log signed and went to leave the Mission, but on the way out something unexpected happened. Somebody stopped me outside the Mission and gave me a street address, telling me to go there. After driving to the location, I discovered a huge warehouse full of toys and Christmas gifts. My jaw dropped at the enormous size of the building that moment was cut short a second later as an employee collected me to help unload a truck that had come with more gifts After 30 minutes of unloading the truck, he said he wanted to show me something. At first, I was hesitant but then I agreed to go with him and see what he wanted to show me.
He took me through a dimly lit corridor, through a back door, and then finally into another, even more, massive room than the first, filled up to the brim with toys, and told me about how much my volunteer work mattered All of these toys were all moved here by volunteers and many massive organizations donated toys to the Mission, including Toys for Tots. He told me that even though I only volunteered for a couple of hours it all added up in the end and it allowed the Mission to invite low-income families to this warehouse to pick 4 toys per child to give their kids for Christmas. At that moment I felt pride in what I had accomplished. Even though I initially only thought I was making a small difference, I now saw that with my work and other volunteers from all over the area we as a team could make a difference and affect hundreds of families in a positive way and learned just how valuable volunteering, even for just a little bit, could be.
