SeasonsofChange
By: Mackenzie ChaneyOne time when I participated in a service project and it changed my perspective of Key Club was when I volunteered at Allies in Youth Development for the first time on November 13th, 2022. Allies is a non profit organization that sends packages of clothes, toiletries, and more to other countries, specifically ones who are in need of care due to war (like Ukraine) They are open almost every Sunday (except the first one) for young volunteers to help out.
I will be honest, the first time I heard about Allies, I thought that it was a bowling alley. I believe it was because I got the name confused with an actual bowling alley named Alley Cats. I don’t blame myself for this, since the names are similar. However, when I was told about Allies by one of the sponsors, I felt inspired. These were people who were changing lives by donating items to other countries, after all, and they’ve already impacted so many people with their work. When I was packing the boxes that day, it felt good knowing that I’m doing a part in helping people around the world.
From this volunteering experience, I realized that Key Club can do so much more than just helping around Mansfield. Helping out others this way also has the benefit of convenience; Allies is very close to Frontier STEM Academy, so it’s not required for me to do anything too hard other than checking the packages. Most importantly, however, this has taught me that I don’t have to do something major to make a difference. Something simple, like donating old items (clothes and toys) to others in need can go a long way. Learning from this, I hope I can help out the world however and whenever I can, whether that’s picking up trash, donating, or something else. Overall, Key Club has encouraged me to do such activities, and I’m confident that doing so will continue to positively influence me as a person.
